Sean Thomas, Firestone’s Champion Motorcycle Road Racer is Just 13
By Kelly Fordyce Martindale
R
elentless…dedicated…youngest… fearless…just a few words to describe Firestone’s Sean Thomas, who is likely the youngest ever to earn a road racing license in Colorado. He was licensed at twelve years of age. More fascinating than that is the fact that, at 13, he races against adults, not children. Reaching speeds up to 105mph, Sean says, “I’ve crashed multiple times but they weren’t that bad, except for one earlier in 2015.” He did not elaborate. Sean, who is actively seeking business
sponsorships, started riding and racing at age four, on motocross bikes at IMI in Dacono. He played football for a time but when faced with a choice between football and road racing, he chose the latter. In 2015, Sean raced in 10 road race weekends, 4 with the Motorcycle Roadracing Association (MRA) in Colorado and 6 with the Utah Sportbike Association (USBA) in Utah. Sean won the Production 500 class in Utah and was runner up in the Lightweight Twins class there as well. Sean was nominated for the “Young Guns” award with Road Racing World magazine and will be competing for a sponsorship opportunity with Champion Spark Plugs in the next several months. Sean is in the 8th grade at Coal Ridge Middle School and maintains a 3.5 GPA. He is in three advanced level classes but says history is one of his favorites. He says, “When I’m not doing homework, I’m racing. If I’m not racing, I’m thinking about racing.” He says riding his bike (not motorcycle) helps him with his training and for getting the feel of different riding situations. Topping his list of mentors is his dad and some others that he races against. But, Sean says, “I idolize Valentino Rossi, Casey Stoner and Jorge Lorenzo. I idolize Rossi because he is calm and smart in very exciting and frustrating situations. Stoner shows me that no matter where you come from you can make it to the top. Finally, Lorenzo is very smooth and looks perfect when he’s riding the motorcycle.
I definitely idolize these three MotoGP riders and their styles.” “It’s exhilarating,” said Sean Thomas during a recent interview by Channel 7 News. (see http://www.thedenverchannel. com/sports/colorado-teen-is-championmotorcylce-road-racer) He shared that his passion isn’t so much a need for speed but more for a sense of accomplishment. He knows at his young age he is paving the way for others who love this sport. Ultimately, he would like to see a world championship as the fastest racer. Sean’s parents support him 100%.
His mom, Janelle, said, “I still have some anxiety but knowing that the race track is one of the safest to ride gives me a lot of comfort. We know that it’s not a matter of ‘if’ it’s a matter of ‘when’ he’ll crash. Knowing the risks and knowing there are safety measures in place allow me to support him and not worry about him.” Sean says, “My 7-yr-old sister isn’t really interested in watching me.” When traveling, his sister gets to spend time with grandma. The Thomas’ appreciate the support of family and friends. It helps them stay balanced.

What’s On My Mind
Kelly Martindale, Publisher
New Year, Old Stuff
It’
s almost time for the ball to drop; yet you are alone, no one to kiss you at the moment of the new year. Perhaps, worse, there is someone in your life to kiss you; and they don’t. They won’t. There is nothing worse than being in a relationship, yet being alone. In the morning, you turn on the TV and the first thing you see is a person dropping the overly large pants to show off the smaller version after weight loss and you hear the words NEW YEAR, NEW YOU! Later in the day you realize the electricity payment is due the next day and so is the cell phone bill. What will you do? Why did you spend so much on Christmas presents when you didn’t have the money to begin with? The start of 2016 can be an exciting event or one filled with regrets. Regardless, the mental list of what you hope to change in the new year starts growing in your mind, in your heart. Your desire to see it come to pass blossoms into a planning phase of step-bysteps to make it happen. Hope fills the first day of the new year. Expectations evolve and anticipation makes your smile wide and your eyes sparkle. This year WILL be better. How can it not be? You are on a roll. Until the person in your life changes your plans for the day. Until the pants you wanted to wear to that special dinner don’t fit. Until your cell phone payment won’t clear the bank. Until you feel alone, again. Until your guilt and regrets eat you alive. Until you are just too tired to do anything about all the things you hoped to achieve.
When you are tired and defeated, what do you turn to: Vodka, potato chips, Smarties, margaritas, sex, your credit card, a new relationship? So much for the NEW YEAR, NEW YOU. When, after not one but two of my children were killed in car related accidents, I was at my lowest, in the depths of despair (worse than any of my other depressions), feeling hopeless and realizing the rest of my life would never get better…I turned to booze, food and every other potential source of escape. Guess what? There is no escape available to keep the pain, sorrow and loneliness away, for good. Pain, sorrow and loneliness follow you. So do all the other problems in your life. Until…until you solve the problems for good, in the right way, with the right help. There is counseling, AA, NA, FAA, AlAnon, and other Anonymous groups for pills, emotions, debt, gambling, clutter, and even procrastination. There are self-help books for EVERY issue and gurus and televangelists on the TV if you don’t like to read. Now there are even apps and websites where you can find your perfect match. These are all tools that promise to heal what ails you. But they take a lot of time and commitment and courage to follow through. Have you ever wondered if there is an easier way; not a magic pill but something easier that lasts, that won’t change with your
emotions or from the influence of those around you? Do you ever think, “There has to be a better way…there just has to be a better way”? What if, this year, you tried something different? What if, in defeat, you turned away for booze, food, other people, books, your pet, and television. Stop. Close your eyes. Do you feel a presence? A presence of love, acceptance, hope? Keep your eyes closed. Ask. Ask, “Are you there?” Is there another being beside you? I assure you, there is someone there. Someone who will never disappoint you. You’ve heard about Him. You sing Christmas songs about Him. But do you know Him? He knows you. He knows your heart and your yearnings for better things while you live on this earth. He knows your mistakes and He still loves you and accepts you just as you are. His name is Jesus. God’s son. Counselor. Provider. Protector. Peace. Healer. Creator. Savior. These are just some of the names of God, all explaining what He offers you, every day of your life, no matter what is happening in your life. A NEW YOU in the NEW YEAR is possible but it is up to you…what do you choose to believe? Try to remember: Hope does not depend on the person in your life, the overweight body you live in, the few dollars in your checking account, getting a better job…. hope in Christ and He will make the important things come to pass. He can do nothing less. He will be true to Himself.
Oh, wash me, cleanse me from this guilt. Let me be pure again. Ps 51:2 TLB

T
he Town of Firestone was ranked number 11 among the Safest Cities in Colorado report for 2015 by SafeWise, a community-focused safety organization committed to increasing home and community safety, education, awareness, and preparedness. While Colorado continues to lead the nation as one of the fastest growing states in America, Firestone has followed that trend offering a growing Town that takes pride in its community spirit and desires a small-town lifestyle with abundant parks and trails, homeownership, low taxes, economic development efforts and safety. Colorado’s Rocky Mountains, Firestone is located on the northern edge of the Denver-Boulder metropolitan area along Interstate 25, midway between Denver and Fort Collins, just east of Longmont. Firestone has experienced an annual increase in population, with more than 200 home permits issued thus far in 2015 and a population of 11,945. “We know our citizens value a superior quality of life, and with that comes a higher demand on making sure that we provide superior public safety,” said David Montgomery, Police Chief with the Firestone Police Department. “Not only are we a state accredited law
enforcement agency, we offer the best and highly trained and educated individuals who provide a high level of service to keep the safety of our citizens a top priority.” The Firestone Police Department continues its commitment to its residents to work together in partnership for the safety and security of the Town. This is done through listening to the community and striving to exceed expectations. With ongoing programs such as Neighborhood Watch and outreach efforts into the local schools, the department is always working to educate local residents. Firestone Mayor Paul Sorensen said it’s a great honor for the Town of Firestone

NY Subs opened on Friday, December 18 at 8350 Colorado Blvd., #? In Firestone. The local sandwich shop is managed by Dee Dul, who has vast restaurant experience and is a friend of the off-site owners. The Carbon Valley area was selected for the new sub shop because of the growth in the area. In addition to Dee, five other local residents are employed at the NY Subs. When asked what the difference was between NY Subs and other sandwich shops, Dee responded, “We offer high quality Parisian bread that when baked at 500 degrees with the sandwich ingredients, it becomes crispy on the outside but stays soft on the inside. When the sandwich cheese melts into the meat and other ingredients, it’s delicious!” He continued, “We really want people to come taste the difference!” Dee also says they offer ingredients that aren’t common at other sandwich shops. He mentioned pastrami, corn beef, avocados and artichokes as an example. He boasts of the shop’s excellent deli mustard. The restaurant, which comfortably seats 18, offers dine in or carry out service. Subs are offered in either the 7’ Regular size

b. The Gateway Project on Firestone Blvd; c. The current projects on First Street and Grant Ave. 4. Evaluating the needs of the Firestone Public Safety Department; 5. He also advocates for a strong retail presence and progressive growth plan in the Carbon Valley that includes job providing businesses as well as sit-down family oriented restaurants. George is asking for your vote on April 5, 2016 so he can continue serving the people of Firestone as Town Trustee. Dee says that his favorite – the Italian Sub, appears to be the community’s favorite as well. In the short time the sandwich shop has been open, it has become the best-selling sub. NY Subs is open 10am to 8pm. They are located at 8350 Colorado Blvd #110 in Firestone and can be reached at 303.952.9904. ast year, I attended a Destination Wedding workshop and resort inspections. We even experienced a mock “wedding” with bride, groom, wedding party, parents, a “priest” and even the reception! Many resorts offer “free” weddings as long as you meet certain requirements. You can then add your own touch with additional costs. The choices are endless. So, armed with the information to guide you with your decision, I’ve decided to give you some pointers. A destination wedding combines the wedding, reception and honeymoon together in one location. The destination wedding allows the guests to enjoy a relaxing, activity-filled vacation while spending quality time with the wedding couple. If it’s hard to imagine what a destination wedding is like, picture this: you and your partner are in a warm, tropical setting, surrounded by friends and family toasting your future together. The sounds of music and ocean waves peacefully blend together in the background, and a feast is prepared in your honor in the local traditions. Every single detail, from the setting of the service to the flowers, has been effortlessly arranged to suit your taste. And after the ceremony, you won’t have to leave this breathtaking locale, for you’ll have your honeymoon there as well. Or, you can move on to another resort for your “private” time. Resorts offer wedding packages to keep a destination wedding stress-free and simple. They offer the complimentary services of their on-site wedding consultant to help coordinate the essentials, like your marriage license and officiate. You get to choose the level of
intimacy you want for the ceremony and invite accordingly. Destination weddings are perfect for couples with families and friends scattered around the country. With a destination wedding, advance warning and save-the-date cards are crucial. Send them off as early as possible, preferably at least eight months in advance, for your guests will need to work the trip into their budget and work schedules. Once you decide a destination wedding is right for you, then say “I do” to your travel advisor. We excel at making plans for multiple people from multiple locations. Planning for the most important day of your life will be a wonderfully crazy time for you, so finding someone you trust to aid in your decision making will be a welcomed relief. A good travel advisor can save you money as well as time - two enormous factors for a couple planning their life together. Through our reliable relationships with suppliers and resort wedding planners and personnel, travel advisors specialize in providing personalized suggestions to suit both your dreams and your budget. For more information about destination weddings, honeymoons or any other vacation experience, contact Judy Bakanec.

Area Mayor’s Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings DACONO MAYOR, JOE BAKER
z Hello from Dacono; Well it’s a brand new year with a brand new Mayor. Let me cover a few things that took place during December. We had our traditional tree lighting festival at City Hall. Mountain View Fire Protection District along with Untied Power served chili and Joe Baker hot chocolate to all who came. We took in donations for our food bank and we gave out our decorative Dacono tree ornaments. We had a visit from Santa Claus and he stayed and
FIRESTONE MAYOR, PAUL SORENSEN
z Happy New Year! Last year the Town of Firestone experienced incredible changes. As we begin 2016 many new and existing projects will continue to take shape. Paul Sorensen z The Barefoot Lakes master planned community will begin construction of the first phase of homes this year. There has been great interest in this new community just north of the St. Vrain River. This development is the largest our community has ever worked with. Recreation features will bring lakes into our parks and trails system that will open new avenues for boating,
FREDERICK MAYOR, TONY CAREY

z Each month, I’ll give you some insight into topics that I am getting approached about frequently and what is coming up
took pictures with everyone in front of the historic Mountain View fire truck. Carbon Valley Santa Cops was a huge success and I want to thank everyone who participated, especially Dacono, Fredrick and Firestone Police Departments. Thanks for your dedication. z After a comprehensive budget process, the City of Dacono is starting 2016 on solid financial ground with many projects scheduled for this upcoming year. Residents will benefit from a significant increase in assessed valuation largely from oil and gas as the street fund bond mill levy will be set a 2.232 mills down from 3.939 mills in 2015. z We’re planning smart economic growth with a focus on infrastructure for parts of the city that need the most attention along with attracting long term commercial growth in the right areas. Our focus in 2016 will be building and planning for residential amenities. We have nearly $2 million dollars dedicated to new funding for projects such as; bringing e-books to the Dacono public Library, Phase one of the Veterans Memorial Park and a Splash Park along with finishing
Centennial Field’s Master Plan. Weld County Road 8 is officially open and paved all the way through to WCR 13 Colorado Boulevard. Additionally, the City will maintain its capital improvement focus on the Glen’s with the Maclean water line replacement and a new perimeter fence along SH52 between Holly and MacDavidson Circle. Our City Hall and Police Department will receive facade improvements and the City will purchase capital equipment such as new public works and police department vehicles. z Our Council is planning for a retreat to help facilitate our vision for this great city that we all live in. I feel that Dacono will grow in the right direction with hard work and a sense of community, first. Dacono will be one of the best cities in northern Colorado to live work and play in. z I am very excited to get things rolling. Please visit our website for any information www.cityofdacono.com and/or checkout our FaceBook page. Thank You, Mayor Joe Baker
swimming, fishing and beautiful scenery once completed. z Warmer weather this spring will bring new asphalt to the historic part of Firestone. As we move through the first phase of water line replacement we will be redoing the asphalt on First Street along with new curb and gutter and sidewalks between Grant and Buchanan avenues. Improvements to the storm water system on McClure Avenue will eliminate the flooding and ice in the winter. z New apartment complexes will begin leasing this year as buildings are completed. I have had more people asking questions on when the apartments will be available than any other topic in town. These units will give an alternative housing option. z We continue to work with retail developers to try to find the right fit in town for their projects. Restaurants and businesses are looking. Lee Schwab Tire Center will begin construction this spring between Walgreens and McDonalds. The new UC Health Carbon Valley Health Center will soon be under construction just north of the emergency room at Firestone and Colorado boulevards. Pepper Jacks restaurant began grade work in December in preparation for a 2016 opening. In addition, Saddleback Golf Course will be opening its new club house this year.
z This year will be a busy one for our community. Many years of planning and policy setting has been invested to create a foundation to grow our community. Thanks to the dedication and vision of past and present town boards for having the far-sightedness of our community’s growth. We are also blessed to have the highest quality staff to research and put the policies of the Board in place. z This April, our Town Board of Trustees will have two members who will be term limited - Trustee Daryl Walsh and Mayor Pro-tem Matt Holcomb. I want to thank them and their families for the sacrifices they have made to make our community better. Trustee George Heath will be up for re-election. George has been a true champion for our senior residents and I wish him success if he decides to run for office again. z There will be three open seats for trustees this April. The Mayor’s position is also up for election. The Mayor may serve up to three two-year terms. With the support of my family, I will be running for reelection this April and I look forward to continuing to serve the Firestone community as Mayor if so elected.
in my conversations with residents and business owners, whether positive or negative. Here’s what’s trending in Frederick this month. z I want to wish you all a very Happy New Year! We are looking forward to another great year in Frederick which will include another full events season with some familiar faces and some surprises. If you’re looking for a new idea for your New Year’s Resolution, consider a resolution to support your community by volunteering at one of our events. It’s a fun way to get involved in putting on a great time for your neighbors to enjoy each other’s company while also showcasing our community to visitors. z Our new Public Works Director, Marco Carani, got a harsh welcome with the snowstorm that blew in last month but he handled it beautifully. The public works team did a great job with their new larger fleet of plows given how fast the snow fell, and with one
additional plow joining the fleet in 2016, snow removal will continue to improve. If you see a snow plow while you’re out driving, please give them plenty of room because their large vehicles are not as easy to maneuver as your personal car. z Keep a lookout for the new website design at the end of this month, especially if you use a smart phone for web browsing. The new site will be friendlier to mobile devices, which will give access to more people to find out the information they want to know about Frederick. z Congratulations to Sweet Magnolia’s Salon, winner of our Deck the Downtown Contest! All of the businesses who participated really helped to brighten up the downtown for the season, so thanks to everyone who joined in and everyone who voted. If you would like me to come and meet with your group, I am happy to do so, just email me at tcarey@frederickco.gov.

The Vision of Graceful Oaks Youth Ranch is to connect children and horses together as hope is discovered in Jesus Christ.
On
August 27, 2008, Chalae and her husband Ben went to their first marriage counseling session. Past issues, coupled with constant fights fueled by fear were driving them apart. After leaving the church office, they could hear police sirens in the distance but thought nothing of it as they each entered their own separate vehicles to head home. Moments later as they started driving home in separate cars, Ben pulled off to the side as he witnessed a Dodge Ram Truck fleeing from law enforcement. The truck was traveling at speeds 70-80 MPH. The high speed chase ended as the truck landed into and on Chalae’s Trailblazer at the intersection. Chalae had life threatening injuries while Kierra, their 9 month old daughter at the time, had only a bruise. Their marriage issues were put on hold, and in its place God slowly grew grace, patience, forgiveness, healing, and peace. Their recovery was long and painful, however Ben and Chalae personally witnessed God’s love for them during this season of suffering. His provision and protection far exceeded the tragedy that consumed their lives. God used their pain to restore their broken hearts. He healed their marriage and pain from Chalae’s childhood past. In the eyes of brokenness, Ben and Chalae experienced a lovingpersonal God who showed them their story wasn’t over; but rather, it was just the beginning. By the grace of God, a new season has started for Ben and Chalae as they invite children and families to come just as they are to Graceful Oaks Youth Ranch. God continues to write our stories of healing, love and acceptance and we are excited to see God’s story unfold for GOYR and the lives of others. We are excited to share with you about our Christian Non-Profit Youth Ranch called Graceful Oaks Youth Ranch (GOYR) in Ft. Lupton, Co. Only ten minutes east of I25 and Hwy 52. Our grand opening is scheduled for Spring 2016 and our youth ministries will start in January 2016.
If you know of a child between the ages of 7-18 years old who could benefit from our session program, please complete our online session request form below. Note: We can only accept requests from a parent or legal guardian.

In 1999, God spoke to my heart about having a youth ranch one day that He would use as a place for children and families to come just as they are and find refuge from their pain. He gave me Isaiah 61:3 and spoke to my heart about using this ranch to heal the broken hearted and that He would turn their ashes into beauty, just like He did in my life. In October 2015, God led Ben and I to a beautiful ranch in Ft. Lupton to call Graceful Oaks Youth Ranch. We are settling in and believe God is leading us to focus on three ministries at the ranch for 2016: 1. Graceful Oaks Leadership Program is designed to equip young leaders for tomorrow. Our focus at the ranch is to empower our youth to be all that God has created them to be by encouraging them to lead and utilize their gifts and talents. Youth committees will help coordinate our Grand Opening and Mighty Wrangler Program during the Summer. Special guest speakers
will invest into the lives of our youth and help prepare them to lead for tomorrow. 2. Mighty Wrangler Program will be held once a month during the summer starting in 2016. Children from our local community will be invited to experience an authentic western environment as they learn about Jesus. Be ready for praise and worship, a lesson about Jesus, playing with friends, games and lots of fun!!! 3. Session Program is to connect horses and children together as hope is discovered in Jesus Christ. Each session consists of one child, one horse and one session leader. This program is designed for children ages 7-18 years old who have experienced emotional pain; such as, their parents divorce, rejection at school, loss of a parent, trauma or abuse. Our hope is they will experience God’s love & healing and learn more about who they are in Christ. We would like to invite you to come out to the ranch for a tour and see all that God is doing at Graceful Oaks!
About our program...
Our session program at GOYR allows us to connect with each child right where they are in life. Each session will consist of one child, one horse and one session leader. Our Session Program is geared toward providing a safe and loving environment and may include different methods like helping with chores at the ranch, working with horses and other animals, crafts, or play. By God’s grace, and generous donations, the ranch offers sessions completely free of charge. The purpose for this ministry is for children to be excited about their future as they experience God’s love and who He created them to be despite the pain they may have experienced from their past.

He says, “After all, your home is usually where your Mac or iPhone need the assistance.” Alfredo enjoys working with groups, kids, seniors, and parents. It’s not uncommon that individuals need instruction, or even “tours”, of their own products. Alfredo, the Creative Tech Guru, will help clients get to know and use their Apple products.

Kids, seniors, parents and grandparents: learn to use your electronic Apple devices no matter your age! I just upgraded to the iPhone 6s. I found an app on my iPhone called GarageBand where I can play a piano, guitar, drums, and moreif I knew how to play the piano in the first place. With the help of the Creative Tech Guru, it seems like I can learn to play a simple song. The Creative Tech Guru can help you, too, with your Apple product and ALL the apps and fun that go with it. Who is the Creative Tech Guru? Alfredo Nevarez: He is a certified professional who used to work as a Creative at Apple before he graduated from the Art Institute for Interactive Media Design. He now builds websites and troubleshoots Apple/Mac products if clients are having issues. Apple scaled back its training services at its stores but Apple product owners need for technical help continues to grow. Alfredo fills that gap by bringing clients quality training services to their homes.
There are even free workshops in Carbon Valley that clients can attend. Find them at http://www.meetup.com/ Frederick-Apple-Creatives. To get to know Alfredo, like his page at https://www. facebook.com/applecreatives833. Some of the websites he’s designed include: The state of Colorado’s website www.colorado. gov, The Computer Science Department at CU Boulder www.colorado.edu/cs, and launching in mid-January, Governor Hickenlooper’s Website - www.colorado. gov/governor. Alfredo loves training. It’s his gift. He enjoys working with all ages and helps others find their creative side by teaching them photo restoration and drawing. He teaches how to utilize Photoshop, iMovie, and other apps on the Mac, iPhone or whatever Apple products a client owns. Finally, Apple product owners can stay home and receive the training they need from their own Carbon Valley Neighbor, the Creative Tech Guru. Give him a call and see how he can reveal new ways to get the most out of “All Things Apple!” In the month of January, Alfredo is offering the low rate of $30 per session for his services. Each session is 1 hour. This is perfect for anyone who was gifted a new Mac or iPhone over the holidays!
nderstanding how appraisals work will help you achieve a quick and profitable refinance or sale. Here are five tips about the appraised value of your home. 1. An appraisal isn’t an exact science When appraisers evaluate a home’s value, they’re giving their best opinion based on how the home’s features stack up against those of similar homes recently sold nearby. One appraiser may factor in a recent sale, but another may consider that sale too long ago, or the home too different, or too far away to be a fair comparison. The result can be differences in the values two separate appraisers set for your home. 2. Appraisals have different purposes An appraisal being used to figure out how much to insure your home for or to determine your property taxes may rely on other factors and arrive at different values. Appraisals are also different from CMAs, or competitive market analyses. In a CMA, a real estate agent relies on market expertise to estimate how much your home will sell for in a specific time period. 3. An appraisal is a snapshot Home prices shift, and appraised values will shift with those market changes. Your home may be appraised at $150,000 today, but in two months when you refinance or list it for sale, the appraised value could be lower or higher depending
on how your market has performed. 4. Appraisals don’t factor in your personal issues You may have a reason you must sell immediately, such as a job loss or transfer, which can affect the amount of money you’ll accept to complete the transaction in your time frame. An appraisal doesn’t consider those personal factors. 5. You can ask for a second opinion If your home appraisal comes back at a value you believe is too low, you can request that a second appraisal be performed by a different appraiser. You, or potential buyers, if they’ve requested the appraisal, will have to pay for the second appraisal. But it may be worth it to keep the sale from collapsing from a faulty appraisal. On the other hand, the appraisal may be accurate, and it may be a sign that you need to adjust your pricing or the size of the loan you’re refinancing. Source: Houselogic

Frederick Solar Power Update In this month’s installation of our ‘What’s Developing’ series, Planner Chris Kennedy takes an in-depth look at the residential solar development that’s heating up in Frederick. Prior to 2014, the Town had issued exactly zero permits for the installation of solar systems, but over the past two years Town staff has permitted 172 of them across Frederick. A total of 43 were approved in 2014, with triple that number (129) so far in 2015. “There was a definite push for it this year; the increase is tied to the available incentives,” said Frederick’s Chief Building Official Jason Overholt. “Solar installations can be pretty costly without the rebates and other incentives that are being offered. It is a pretty black and white correlation.” Planner Chris Kennedy is able to explain more about the federal and local incentives that are available as well as which neighborhoods are seeing the most solar development in the full article, which can be found at www.frederickco.gov/ developingseries.

hat worked well for your business in 2015? What may Helping people connect to need improving? Are you wondering where to focus business through social media your marketing efforts in 2016? Jennie Poppenger Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg The Social Media Whisperer announced there are about 18 million business pages on Facebook and 1 million are being added every *month*. Broken downFind thatFace to Face on Facebook would be around 33,333 pages created every day! You need to be there, but how can you be successful with so much competition? GOAL: GROW THE NUMBER OF PEOPLE ON YOUR PAGE The emphasis on amassing mega numbers is waning and instead business owners are (finally!) realizing the power of engaging with the right audience. Can you grow your page organically by 3 people each week? How about 10 people per month? This is organic and healthy. GOAL: INCREASE POSTINGS To significantly boost content production and distribution! A couple posts a week isn’t going to cut it anymore. Why? To gain the attention you need, you’re going to need frequency. Post multiple times each day. Don’t worry – you won’t irritate people. Most people aren’t all day. You want to be in front of them when they are online. GOAL: CREATE CONSISTENT CONTENT You and your business need to create better, more fun, and more valuable content in order to be noticed and to truly benefit from social media. Have a contest or promotion monthly – at minimum. Consumers spend an average of 2 hours, 21 minutes on their mobile devices and are replacing computers and TVs with smartphones and tablets to surf the Web and watch videos. Now that Facebook recently introduced autoplay videos in the News Feed (mobile and desktop), short video content (that is relevant, educational and/or entertaining!) will be even more crucial for your 2016 marketing strategy! Connections Training & Staffing, Inc. Provides Jobs, Employees and Training By Jan Sciacca
N
eed a job? Need quality employees ASAP? Need required training for your existing staff that you don’t have the time or skill for? Call Connections Training & Staffing, Inc. Examples of how this dynamic staffing company celebrating 4 years in business works was shown to me on the afternoon I visited with co-owner Corinne Vanosdoll and her Longmont Branch Manager Jennifer Merkel. That morning an employer had called with a need of 40 employees to report to work that week! I also met Jesse, a man that had made his way to Colorado from Texas, after being laid off there. He had decades of experience in the same field and was “hungry” for any job that would support his family but was told by many employers that he was too experienced. Connections Training & Staffing worked with Jesse and found a job in his field in three days later. As I was leaving the Connections office, Jesse introduced me to his daughter who was applying for a job. His experience at Connections had made a positive difference in their family. Connections also provides a balanced approach to the economic model. As a social enterprise, they offer hope and a second chance to those who have chosen to make a positive change in their lives but have barriers to long term sustainable employment. Connections partners with the Department of Corrections, the Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, Workforce Centers, Veterans groups, Youth Groups and non-profit organizations such as The Women’s Bean Project, Bud’s Warehouse and many others in order to provide customized training, and create job opportunities. One of Corinne’s most memorable moments since starting Connections four years ago was when she and co-owner Jo Noulin received accolades from Governor Hickenlooper for their Department of Corrections Re-Entry programs. Although this aspect of Connections represents a very small part of what the company does, it is one of the most rewarding for Corinne and Jo. In addition to Temporary-To-Hire Placement, Connections Training and Staffing, Inc offers Temporary Placement, Direct Hire Placement, Executive Searches, Payroll Services, HR Consultation and Safety Training and Certification. Connections recruits job candidates from the entire community including the Carbon Valley and beyond. As a local business they represent the quality and caliber that is a reflection of the community. There are five expectations for those seeking employment from and through Connections. Those are Reliability, Integrity, Honesty, Punctuality and
Professionalism. Candidates can apply in person at Connections offices. Candidates need to be prepared for an interview, with a resume (if available), professional attire and right -to-work documentation. The staffing industry is a stressful one. It’s a constant challenge to obtain, retain and sustain employees and employers on a daily basis. It helps that Corinne and Jo have decades of experience between them. Corinne states, “You have to be bold and fearless and you have to be willing to figure challenges out.” Both Corinne and Jo have
young families and believe family has to come first not just for them but for their staff as well. What works for both their families is that their husbands have chosen to stay home and manage the domestic duties. Connections Training and Staffing can be reached at either of their two locations, 436 Terry Street, Longmont 303.485.8145 or 8700 Grant Street, Suite 100, Thornton 303.867.5150. The company website is connectionstrainingandstaffing. com and a contact email is info@ connectionstrainingandstaffing.com.

rent R. Lang, DDS, PC, smiles as he talks about his 23 years in orthodontics. He says that “The kids keep me young.” There’s really much more to it than that. Dr. Lang loves the community and loves watching entire families change and grow up in front of him. He also knows and loves that when he helps create a beautiful, healthy smile, it not only improves one’s dental function and health but also one’s self-confidence. Dr. Lang says his life of diagnosing and treating, although sometimes challenging, is personally rewarding. Dr. Lang, established his home and his community practice called Firestone Orthodontics in the Carbon Valley community twelve years ago. He eventually purchased the home that houses his office at 704 First Street, Firestone. Many a parade watcher has used his sidewalk and driveway to watch numerous area parades. Firestone Orthodontics is a community supporter of Miner’s Day and police supported events. They also work with the St. Vrain Valley School District to provide Friday folders. Dr. Lang is a former U. S. Air Force pilot. He graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Colorado School of Dentistry. He also graduated with an advanced degree in Orthodontics from Loyola University in Chicago. He is a member of The American Association of Orthodontists, American Dental Association, Colorado Dental Association, and the Boulder County Dental Association. Dr. Lang and his team have a passion for excellence and a dedication to leading edge technologies.
In 1992 Dr. Lang founded Boulder Orthodontics and in August of 2015 moved the practice and his long-term employee team to a modern, cutting edge facility at 2710 Pearl Street. That cutting edge care and experience gets brought out to Firestone. Dr. Lang’s team moves back and forth from the Firestone practice to the Boulder practice. The team has been together so long that they’re like a family themselves. They know that a family’s schedule can dictate which location would be more convenient for them. They are dedicated to treating each patient with excellence and as a valued member of their practice. Orthodontic treatment options have change dramatically over the years. At Firestone Orthodontics, patients are offered the latest technologies that are designed to increase treatment quality and decrease treatment time using either Damon Braces or Invisalign. Firestone Orthodontics also uses a 3D Scanner that provides a superior image of one’s teeth. That image is kept in the “cloud” and is used in multiple applications during the treatment process including Invisalign. Dr. Lang is a Premiere Provider of Invisalign. Another way Dr. Lang can use this image is to adjust your custom braces on your virtual teeth on the “cloud.” Dr. Lang is able to determine where the braces should be placed and can virtually see how the braces placement will move the teeth. Corrections can be made on the virtual teeth as many times as possible, prior to bonding and placing the physical braces in your mouth. Correct braces placement is critical for successful treatment outcome. It’s easier for Dr. Lang to work with the braces on a virtual image than what is otherwise upside down and backwards, because of looking in a mirror in the patient’s mouth! Other technologies used by Dr. Lang are considered to be accelerated orthodontics. Accelerated techniques can speed up the treatment process 3350%. These include, but are not limited to AcceleDent Aura and Propel. Dr. Lang and his team encourage anyone considering orthodontics to call for a complimentary consultation.

They may also tell the grandparent not to tell any other family members to avoid upsetting them. A typical call might start with the con-artist saying, ‘Hi, Grandma/Grandpa, do you know who this is?’ They’ll wait for the grandparent to guess who it is and inadvertently provide them a name of a grandchild, and then the play on emotions begins. If you have received a request for a money transfer through a company such as Western Union, verify the requester’s identity and if their story is legitimate. If you suspect you may be a victim, contact the Frederick Police Department at 720-382-5700.
2016 Colors of the Year
T
he major paint companies have chosen their Colors of the Year for 2016. Sherwin Williams’ choice is Alabaster (SW7008) and Benjamin Moore has selected Simply White (OC-117). These selections are an unexpected change from the usual push toward color, color, color. Sherwin Williams offers Alabaster as a, ‘sense of personal solace and revival to weary minds,’ while Ben Moore reminds us to, ‘surrender to the complexity of white.’ OK. Seriously though, we’ve used these

whites extensively over the years and both are tried and true standbys. Alabaster is considered a ‘balanced’ white, not cool, not warm. It will be affected by lighting and will go towards yellow in warm lights and towards blue in cool lights. We see it as a white with the slightest ivory tone and it would go well with any other color. It is a part of Sherwin Williams, Pura Vida warm neutral color palette that also contains taupes, grays and dusty rose which they say creates a feeling of wellness, balance and escape. Ben Moore’s Simply White has a bit of yellow in it, but still works well with a cool or warm palette and they recommend Simply White for walls in flat and trim in semi-gloss for a nice contrast. Ben Moore also claims it, ‘remains as constant as possible under different light sources.’ You can’t go wrong with either of these whites. Both can be used generously in any room and will complement any other color in your home.

Pepper Jack’s Grille Taking Shape
On
December 18th, Inspire Dental celebrated their grand opening with a ribbon cutting ceremony with the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce. Dr. Kari Amick, owner of Inspire Dental, hosted the celebration along with her husband, Jon. Many members of the community made it out to the event and enjoyed delicious food, drinks, music and holiday cheer. Located in the new Colorado Blvd Medical and Professional Plaza near Safeway and Ace Hardware, Inspire Dental is right in the heart of Firestone. Inspire Dental’s motto is “nurturing oral health through genuine relationships.” They strive to live out this mission in the way members of our community are cared for, and this begins with the first phone call you make. Jen, the front office administrator, is the helpful, friendly voice you will hear. Her goal is to make the process of getting started as a patient as easy as possible. The relationship continues to develop when you visit the practice for the first time and sit down face to face with Dr. Amick in her office prior to sitting in the dental chair. She truly wants to get to know you as a person and understand your health, needs and desires
before the mask and gloves go on. This is part of the holistic approach embraced by Inspire Dental. They recognize that you are a whole person, not simply a set of teeth, and your overall health and well-being are the ultimate goal of any dental care they provide. During your exam, Dr. Amick and her delightful assistant, Rachael, will do a very thorough exam and take photos of your teeth in addition to traditional x-rays. These photos are displayed on a computer monitor so that you can see exactly what is going on. It’s both fun and informative! With this method, you will have a clear understanding of any treatment that is recommended. Inspire Dental is committed to using only materials that are bio-compatible and minimizing your exposure to harmful chemicals. Dental treatment such as fillings or crowns are done in the most conservative way possible, often using the dental laser as a complement to traditional methods. The laser has unique properties that make it both effective and beneficial to the health of your teeth and gums. Come experience this personalized, holistic approach for yourself! Make your appointment today by calling 720-5981111 or visit InspireFirestone.com.

anuary 1, marked the start of the 17th year for the Carbon Valley Consumer Report, locally owned by Kelly Martindale. “It has been a very humbling and exciting experience,” says Kelly Martindale. “I’ve seen a lot of businesses come and go over these seventeen years,” she says, “But I’ve seen so many succeed and it’s a blessing to all of us when they do persevere and grow strong.” The main goal of every issue of the Carbon Valley Consumer Report is to let consumers know what wonderful businesses are in the Carbon Valley. If residents buy locally, then the towns are more able to provide protection through the first responders, parks for our kids, employment for neighbors, and the list goes on. The CVCR encourages every one to support the local businesses. Kelly’s business has grown to include the Mead Consumer Report and the Erie Consumer Report plus the i25 Corridor Communities Magazine (for Carbon Valley, Mead, and Erie). ould $1 really change your life? Cindy Keen is living proof that it could. In just two years, Keen lost 258 pounds and, last year alone, she ran more than two dozen 5K races. Dave Mathis is another example. Born with a rare genetic disorder which prevented him from walking until he was seven years old, Mathis is now competing in all sorts of athletic events while inspiring others. The same is true of Leslie Hoffman. Once depressed and significantly overweight, Hoffman recently lost nearly 200 pounds – and she’s now loving life and enjoying time with her family. What do they all have in common? They each took a courageous first step and sought help from a supportive local gym where they learned how to take control of their lives. That’s what Carbon Valley resident Judith did when she walked into the doors of Anytime Fitness-Firestone in search of a significant change in her life. It was there that she began a new chapter in her life. She not only gained strength and balance, but worked with a personal trainer to meet her personal weight loss goals. “Taking that first step is the hardest part,” said Nicole Grine, owner of the Anytime Fitness gym Firestone. “After that, it gets a whole lot easier. The key to making big changes is recognizing and appreciating little victories. Dozens of members of our gym have dramatically improved the quality of their lives – one day at a time. Getting started can be scary. But, with the right type of coaching and support, anything is possible.” To help new members get started on the right track, Anytime Fitness is offering a “Join for $1” special deal, Jan. 11 to 15, 2016. Additionally, every new member will receive a free fitness consultation and a personalized 30-day fitness plan.
“Rebecca is another great example of someone who made big changes and is much happier – and healthier – than she used to be,” said Grine. “Since she joined our gym she’s lost 15 total inches and 24 pounds.” One dollar bill at a time, all of the money collected during Anytime Fitness “Join for $1” campaign will be donated to the Kids Sport and Athletic Camp, a Carbon Valley area camp for kids to teach them the essentials of sports. Anytime Fitness, the world’s fastestgrowing fitness club franchise, recently opened its 3,000th gym and now serves nearly 3,000,000 members in more than 20 countries on five continents. “Life is a journey,” said Grine. “Where you go and what you do is up to you. But, if you’d like to get started on a new path, our gym is a great place to get started. A year from now, you’ll be glad you did.”

Realtor’s Real Work Begins With The Sales Contract
M
ost of the work your Realtor does to accomplish the purchase or sale of your property is “behind the scenes.” A Realtor may look calm like a duck on a pond, but underneath they are working hard to keep everything going forward. After an offer has been accepted on a property, the real work begins. Title insurance is ordered to show what items need to be addressed in order to transfer clear title to the buyer, as well as to reveal any restrictions or easements that affect the property. Copies of these documents may be required and they must be delivered in accordance with the contract terms. The same goes for the HOA information, if that applies. In most contracts, the buyer has an opportunity to perform physical inspections of the property. These must be coordinated by the Realtor, as well as any follow up questions or negotiations. The inspection is the most common reason that a contract terminates, so having an experienced Realtor on your side is critical. In addition, property insurance and any home warranty policies must be taken care of. The loan process is an ongoing and often very time-consuming process for the Realtor. The appraisal, survey, verifications and other items need to be addressed during the process. Appraisals can be a cause of great anxiety in today’s market because of increasing values. The Realtor tries to provide the best information possible about current sales, so that the appraiser can do the best job possible. The survey may done right before closing, and is typically nor a problem
on most newer properties. However, an encroachment or a variation in the property size can be a major problem for the lender and buyer. Steps must then be taken to resolve the concern prior to closing. If a property is on well and septic, the Realtor must gather additional information to make sure the proper permits have been issued and take care of the transfer of ownership. There may be testing required to make sure the well and septic systems are up to standards. Sometimes the property or buyer involved does not fit perfectly with the lender’s ideal criteria, so further explanation and information must be gathered. If problems are not solved in a timely manner, there can be delays or even a termination of the contract. Finally, the closing must be coordinated. This entails much more than just setting a time at which the buyer, seller, Realtors, title company and lender can all agree to meet. If the loan approval comes in at the last minute and the closing is at the end of the month, it can be a real juggling act. Often last minute documentation must be obtained or change accommodated. After all of this work, time, worry, effort, frustration and follow-up, there is usually a successful closing. Most Realtors are problem solvers at heart, and they get to put this skill to work on most transactions.

Security Service Charitable Foundation Donation Helps Others Stay Warm in Winter $2,500 Donation to Buy Socks for Thousands
W
hile it may seem like a simple gift, a pair of socks can make a big difference to someone less fortunate in the winter months. Thanks to a $2,500 donation from the Security Service Charitable Foundation, the Pueblo Cooperative Care Center will be able to provide a pair of new socks to the thousands of men, women and children it serves. “Most distribution centers provide a pair of jeans, shirt and sweater; but never socks,” said Mona Montoya, director of operations for the Pueblo Cooperative Care Center. The Center, which is mostly supported by a collective of 38 local churches, provides food, clothing, medication, bus tokens and personal hygiene essentials to more than 42,000 annually. About 4,000 seniors and more than 13,450 children benefit from services offered through the cooperative. “Socks are such a small thing – yet so essential – especially as the weather turns cold,” said Jim Laffoon, president and CEO
of Security Service. “The Cooperative Care Center has a tremendous, 33-year track record in Pueblo, and it’s our honor to be able to provide extra support to relieve some of the burden on the local churches.” “Our mission is to prevent hunger and provide emergency services for the less fortunate in Pueblo County,” said Edie De La Torre, Cooperative Care executive director. “We are incredibly thankful to Security Service for this donation. We believe that we will see many happy feet walking out of the Center, with their new, warm socks this year.” Below: Rick Weber, senior vice president of member service for Security Service Federal Credit Union; Jennifer Andrew, Security Service Pueblo area manager; Edie De La Torre, executive director for Pueblo Cooperative Care; and Wilma Kelly, Pueblo Cooperative Care clothing store staff member

Fitness and Health Tips
By CVPRD Fitness and Wellness Coordinator David Peters
Improve Mobility, Posture, and Heal Quicker with One Piece of Equipment Working out and living an active lifestyle can take a toll on our bodies. When working out, our muscles are constantly being “broken down” to help facilitate movement, lift weight, and even stretch. But what can we do to help improve our posture, mobility and heal faster? The answer is simple: myofascial release.
My-oh-fuscia-whaty?
Myofascial release, as defined by the American Council of Exercise is “a manual massage technique used to eliminate general fascial restrictions; typically performed with a device such as a foam roller.” How myofascial release works is simple. Our muscles and bodies are with fascia; which are primarily connective tissue fibers, most notable collagen, that help enclose, separate, and stabilize muscles, joints, and organs. When we use a foam roller, tennis ball, or other myofascial device, the fascia is “straightened out” helping to relieve inflammation, soreness, and tension. The realigned fascia then helps promote proper posture (no more slouched backs!) and encourages blood flow to the muscles; which in turn helps relieve soreness after an intense work out. Foam rollers are relatively cheap (about $20) and may lead to improvements in posture, functional mobility, and recovery time. Come try out our Stretch and Flex class Wednesdays at 8:30 am with Tana Greene to learn more about the benefits of foam rolling. David Peters is the Fitness and Wellness Coordinator at the Carbon Valley Park and Recreation District. David is a certified Personal Trainer, Group Exercise Instructor, loves the outdoors, and enjoys a healthy diet with some occasional ice cream. etting her first set of acrylic nails solidified the future for Stephanie Bernsen, a hairstylist at the Green Pear Salon in Frederick at 142 6th Street, Unit 6. Stephanie had such great experiences every time she had her nails done that she determined she would become a cosmetologist. At a young age she learned to color her own hair, then the hair of her friends. Eventually, she was able to attend beauty school and graduated two years ago. Concepcion Aguirre, (Concha) owns the Green Pear Salon and has been a fantastic mentor to Stephanie. “Having Concha as a mentor truly has changed my life,” says Stephanie. “In this industry, it’s crucial to constantly learn and Concha has taught me a majority of the techniques I use every day. I’ve always been very eager to advance my skills and Concha never turns away an opportunity to do so. I’m very fortunate to work beside her!” Stephanie works with an amazing team of women; Concha Aquirre, Jamie Roesler, and Torina Allen. They offer services for all women, men and children. Anyone who needs hair, skin and nail services is able to come to the Green Pear and be at ease knowing they’re in good hands! Their clients come from the Carbon Valley, Ft Lupton, Brighton, Platteville, and Longmont. Stephanie says, “We make sure we offer the best products with each of our services. We have an organic product line for hair and nails, and our color line is ammonia free and keeps the integrity of every type of hair!” Every client, every day, makes an impact on Stephanie’s life and adds to her memories! She says she learns as much from every person she encounters and hopes they learn from her as well. She says, “It’s extremely rewarding just to know I’ve touched their heart, even in the smallest way.” Stephanie continues, “I always make an effort to make a sincere connection with my clients during every appointment. This industry is not about money to me,” she continues. “It’s about educating my clients, treating everyone with respect, understanding, helping, and giving someone a way to express their
individuality.” Stephanie focuses on each client individually and that client is her priority while they are in her chair. Stephanie has hit the road running and is anxious to share her skills with new clients. She is offering a partial Highlight with a haircut for $55.00 for all clients who call and book an appointment with her during the month of January. Just mention that you read about her in this article! Stephanie grew up in Denver and currently resides in Platteville. She attended the Denver School of the Arts for middle and high school. This school is offers an artistic and eccentric environment allowing every student to express themselves. She has two beautiful children, Sami (7 yrs) and James (5 yrs) and is newly engaged! Stephanie believes family time is extremely important which includes the outdoors. www.cvcrnews.com Front Range Hospice Partners with Angels Care Home Health to Expand Services
F
ront Range Hospice is pleased to announce that it has entered into a preferred provider agreement with Angels Care Home Health to provide pre-hospice services. Our current healthcare system is very robust when it comes to preventive care, diagnostic services, operative services, treatment services, and hospice care. What is lacking for most of us is that bridge between aggressive care with the intent of a cure and aggressive care with the intent of a comfortable and dignified death. A few insurances, such as Kaiser, have this program and it is called Palliative Care. What is Palliative Care? According to Medline Plus, a National Institute of Health (NIH) website, palliative care is comfort care, end of life care, hospice care. The definition is clear and ambiguous at the same time. Hospice Care is Palliative Care because we focus on comfort care and end of life care for individuals with a prognosis of 6 months or less. Hospice care is delivered in the environment of the patient’s choice. The emerging specialty of outpatient Palliative Care is best looked at as pre-hospice care. It is multidisciplinary
medical care for individuals that have a life threatening illness and are still pursuing aggressive treatment or for individuals that are just not ready to enroll in hospice. As health care consumers, you need to ask the provider exactly what is the care they provide and what is it going to cost you. Some insurances do not cover this at all. Some will cover a Nurse Practitioner for an occasional consultative visit. Some will cover a licensed clinical social worker to come to your residence and provide short term counseling. Front Range Hospice does hospice care and we do it well. Angles Care Home Health does home health care and they do it very well. It is a natural fit. For those individuals that have a life threatening illness and meet the criteria for home health, Angels Care has developed a transitions care program called Care Connections. They will provide a nurse who makes weekly visits, a 24/7 phone support program that focuses on keeping the individual home and not going to the Emergency Room. The nurse’s role is to assist with education, symptom management, and support. A Medical
Social Worker is also available if needed for resource procurement and education. The cost of this program is covered by Medicare in the Home Health Benefit. Angels Care has successfully offered this program in several communities that they serve. The owners of Angels Care insist that their branches have a positive working relationship with a hospice in order to provide this program. The owner of Front Range Hospice has insisted that they stick to their core business, hospice. This relationship between Angels Care and Front Range Hospice will have a positive impact on the community and will assist in reducing the total cost of care to individuals at the end of life. The last hospitalization is often extremely expensive and not something that ultimately the patient or the family wanted if they had been educated and provided with another option. For more information from Angels Care Home Health about Care Connections please call 303-650-3003 or 970-353-2449. For more information about Front Range Hospice please call 303-957-3101 or 970776-8080.

A
licensed Colorado realtor for 15 years, RE/Max Nexus’ newest agent, Robin Glasener, is a shining example of someone who rises above adversity to reach new heights and challenges. As the result of an accident seven years ago, Robin is now a self-described “wheeltor” since she pursues her real estate responsibilities from a wheelchair. A graduate of Ault High School, Robin lives in Longmont with her husband Gary and her guide dog, Mara. Robin is unique in several ways. As she points out, she has seen both sides of the coin as a realtor and as a person with a disability seeking housing. “I began my real estate career as a buyer’s agent in new construction with Journey Homes, but I have lived in various places in Northern Colorado and have experience in buying and selling rural properties as well as older homes.” “Since my accident, I am bringing another dimension to my past experience in real estate by understanding the special needs people like me have,” she adds. As well as being the best realtor she can, Robin’s goal is to increase awareness of issues faced by those with disabilities when it comes to buying and selling a home. She is a board member of Atlantis Community Foundation in Denver, an organization that advocates for the homeless and disabled. She is working with others to design both affordable and wheel chair accessible housing for those in need. “My vision is that this project will be repeated nationally since there is such a huge lack of

Halliburton Presents Check to Carbon Valley Santa Cops Program
H
alliburton’s Fort Lupton operations presented a $10,000 check to the Carbon Valley Santa Cops program on Dec. 8, 2015, to be shared between the Firestone, Frederick and Dacono Police Departments. The program provides toys and warm winter clothing for children who may not otherwise have a gift under the tree. The funds were raised from sponsorship proceeds from the 22nd Annual Halliburton Charity Golf Tournament, held in Houston, Texas, in October. “Partnering with our communities where we live and work has always been a part of our core values, and it is one of the most exciting and rewarding things we do as Halliburton employees,” said Thomas Johnson, Halliburton district manager, Fort Lupton. “We are very proud to work for a company that actively possesses and promotes these values. I think the Santa Cops program’s strong dedication and unwavering commitment to the children of the Carbon Valley community is absolutely awesome.” Each year the Carbon Valley Santa Cops program provides gifts for hundreds of children in the area, as well as sponsors families in need.

Hot 2016 New Year’s Resolution Trend
I
Contact Jason 303.598.0518
jhumphrey@solarcity.com
t’s that time again when millions of Americans make their New Year’s resolutions, which inevitably will be forgotten by Valentine’s Day. This year, let’s do something different. Let’s step outside our comfort zone on resolutions. Let’s add something bigger than “lose weight”, “save more”, and “lose more weight” to the mix. My challenge to you: Make a 2016 resolution to do one thing to help the environment. Don’t roll your eyes until you’ve considered the facts: •• 7 million people die each year from pollution. More than murders, suicide, and car accidents combined! •• Ocean acidification is up 25% over the last 200 years due to carbon emissions, which has killed 19% of the world’s Coral Reefs •• If things stay the same as today, within 100 years, half the world’s species could be extinct All of that can change. It’s not hard, and it’s certainly not too late. All you have to do is find your one thing - one thing that you can take ownership over and feel good
about. Maybe it’s removing dairy and meat from your diet one day a week. Perhaps it’s becoming active with an environmental group. Maybe it’s adding Solar to your home. Whatever it is, challenge yourself to find that one thing and commit to it. My resolution is to become more energy efficient. It is by far one of the easiest ways to make a positive impact on our surrounding environment. Here are my top 5 ways you can become more energy efficient: 1. Install and set a programmable thermostat – you can save over 10% on your heating and cooling costs by installing a Smart thermostat. 2. Switch to Energy Saving lighting – About 10% of your energy usage goes to lighting your home. BY replacing five of your most frequently used lights with ENERGY STAR bulbs, you can save up to $75/year 3. Use electric power strip for electronics – Many electronics (including chargers) continue to consume energy even when not in
use. This can result in $100 a year in unnecessary costs. Unplug charges and use a power strip for electronic devices to eliminate the energy suck. 4. Look for ENERGY STAR appliances, fans, and electronics – Your homes appliances account for close to 20% of your energy bill. ENERGY STAR appliances use 1015% less energy, which can save you nearly $750 over the lifetime of the products. 5. Add Solar panels to your home – looking for a major impact, go Solar! The average Solar installation will offset over 250,000lbs of CO2 during the next 30 years. That’s equivalent to the carbon offset of 178 trees! With rebates and incentives available through 2016, now is the perfect time to take advantage of the sun. As a father of 2 (soon to be 3) boys, it should come as no surprise that I end with a Dr. Suess quote: “Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It’s not”. From my family to yours I wish you a safe, happy, and healthy 2016!

Top Ten Reasons to Enroll Your Middle School Student at Imagine Charter School
E
nsuring that your kids are in a school dedicated to their success and unique needs is incredibly important. When weighing the options for your middle school students, make sure to include Imagine Charter School in your search. This tuition-free public charter school in the St. Vrain Valley School District offers much to support student growth in both heart and mind. The staff would love the opportunity to speak with you about how their distinctive opportunities can benefit your child. Here are the top ten reasons to consider enrolling your middle school student at Imagine.
1. 2. 3. 4.
Sixth grade Outdoor Education trip. Eighth grade Europe trip. Class sizes of approximately 25 students. Participation in sports, including soccer, volleyball, and basketball. 5. Technology with a purpose. Imagine uses technology in the classroom to support academics. But they intentionally choose not to use technology constantly and with one-to-one devices. Research shows that students learn more by actually writing down information (not typing it) and the school is very aware of the social-emotional dangers of constant access to social media and games. 6. Rigorous curriculum that inspires and prepares students for AP and IB High School curricula. Topics of note include Ancient Rome, World War II, physics and chemistry, algebra, literature such as To Kill a Mockingbird and participation in science fair. 7. Study of both music and art including the study of Rembrandt, Picasso and Frank Lloyd Wright. This study is enriched through opportunities such as choir, musical theater, Art Guild, and band. 8. Electives such as robotics, yearbook, photography, art guild, and book making. 9. Engaging and thought provoking capstone projects built on design thinking, created to help students own their own learning. These projects have begun in 5th grade and will include iterations and developments over time as students explore an idea or concept of their own choosing. Each year students will produce an end-product, with a culminating project and presentation in 8th grade. 10. The study of Latin to support college readiness. 11. Leadership opportunities provided to challenge students and help them grow in this area. 12. A family feel with teachers who watch the progress of students over time.
Did we say ten reasons? We couldn’t stop at just ten. Contact Imagine Charter School to learn even more at 303-772-3711.

t’s resolution time again…the time when we all vow to make changes in the New Year. Everyone always meets this time of year with high hopes and the best of intentions, though as we all know, life gets in the way and those best intentions tend to fall by the wayside. This year at Carbon Valley Academy, we set fitness as a priority, incorporating movement in the classroom, as well as giving students more time to move throughout the day, in addition to establishing our all school movement weekly. As the New Year approaches, we are taking things a step further…literally,
with our Middle School Student/Staff Challenge. In the fall, our student council, headed by Mr. McCray, held a pancake breakfast, raising the funds to provide every middle school student and every adult in the building with pedometers. Beginning after winter break, the middle school students will challenge the staff to see who can log more steps! As motivation, an oversized chart will be visible in the lobby for all to see! If the students win this challenge, they will be given the opportunity to plan an extra middle school event before the end of the year (in addition to 2 dances held each year). If the staff wins, the middle school students will serve them lunch and clean up afterwards. The challenge begins January 5, 2016 and runs until March 11, 2016 (the entire 3rd quarter). It’s a resolution we are all committed to. Our end goal is instilling fitness as a life-long promise to ourselves. After all, once you form a habit, it’s hard to break! Cheers to the New Year!

Wow Automotive Relocates to I-25 Corridor Location By Jan Sciacca
W
ow Automotive, owned by Mike Malin, has relocated to the I-25 Corridor area where it specializes in quality used cars, trucks, vans, SUVs and specialty vehicles. Wow Automotive opened last month at 4022 Mulligan Drive, Longmont, which is three blocks north of Highway 66 along the I-25 Frontage Road. Mike has been in the automotive business for over 33 years. He attributes his longevity in the business to offering quality products, superb service and being grounded with a positive attitude and integrity. Although many of Wow Automotive’s sales originate on the internet and from throughout Colorado, Mike enjoys the oneto-one contact with his client. Mike loves the business and he loves people. Unlike a lot of businesses in new locations, Wow Automotive was ready to do business the first day, with Mike selling four cars in his first two days of business at the I-25 location. Mike says his client is anyone who
needs a used car. He serves those who have great credit, good credit, marginal credit and poor credit. He has financing for everyone! For a limited time, Wow Automotive is offering a FREE ASC 3000 mile/90day warranty that covers the engine, transmission and drive train. This warranty, valued at $1000, will be offered on each vehicle sold. Mike reminds us though, “This is a limited time offer.” In addition, Wow Automotive is offering a “New Neighbor” special of $500 off the price of any of its cars, which range from $2995 to $30,000, when you mention this article. Mike touts his shop manager and mechanic J. D. Story as doing a terrific job checking and preparing cars for sale. Mike’s spare time is at a premium. When he’s not selling cars, he likes spending time with Kathie, his wife of 33 years. They enjoy golfing and sailing. They have two adult sons and a new baby grandson.
Air Traffic Controllers are in Need and Aims Community College offers Hi-Tech Training
A
ccording to a recent article by the Associated Press, there is a shortage of air traffic controllers nationwide. Aims Community College offers the only FAA Air Traffic, Collegiate Training Initiative (ATCTI) program in Colorado with computer simulation lab training in all aspects of air traffic control: enroute non-radar, enroute radar, tower operations and terminal radar approach control (TRACON). The computer simulation lab training allows students to use classroom training in realistic air traffic scenarios, using equipment very similar to what they will use in the field and employing the FAA approved separation requirements and rules. This allows students to experience varied situations and gain an understanding of the FAA procedures and phraseology to build a strong foundation for their future careers. “Aims Community College is the only institution in Colorado, Wyoming, Montana, Utah, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico, Nebraska, Iowa, South Dakota and Kansas equipped to provide this level of air traffic controller training with computer simulation lab training in all aspects of air traffic control,” said Dr. Leah L. Bornstein, president of Aims Community College. “We are very proud of the fact that our graduates have achieved a 96.3 percent success rate in the FAA academy training historically, and Aims offers a very affordable educational opportunity in our two-year degree program.” In addition to air traffic control studies, Aims’ students receive training in the pilot environment including private pilot ground, instrument pilot ground and instrument flight trainer lab to become well-rounded and more knowledgeable in the aviation field as a whole. Aims Community College’s air traffic control instructional staff are retired
FAA air traffic controllers, each bringing a minimum of 20 years of experience to students. For more information about Aims’ aviation programs, visit http://www. aims.edu/academics/aviation.

Goal Setting in 2016 By Tumara Rogers Life Coach
It
is that time of year again and many people will be starting to act on their New Year’s resolutions and for those procrastinators out there, it is time to start creating your goals. Here is a way to ensure success with your goal setting. How do you eat an elephant? The S.M.A.R.T way. S.M.A.R.T stands for Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Realistic, and Time-Bound. Goals need to be specific. If they are too general, then a loss of focus and drive can happen due to the inability to break down the goal. Determine what the who, what, when, where and why of that goal is. This will help you create a specific goal. Through measuring your actions, it allows you to know that even with a large goal you are still making progress. Break up your goal into short tasks that can easily be reached and measured, through defining how many or how much. This brings us to ensuring your goal is attainable. By creating goals that speak to your heart’s desire, you build a fire inside of you that will do what it takes to reach those goals. These are the attainable goals. Creating realistic goals are just as important as the previous three. Making sure you are able
and willing to accomplish your goal is most important. Determining how high and lofty it may be is up to you. TimeBound goals give your subconscious a date to start counting down to and creating a demand that you have put upon yourself. When you take the time to create a tangible goal, you will naturally make it specific, measurable and attainable. If you desire to reach your goals and change your future feel free to reach out to me at tumara@tumararogersliving.com.

is that time of year again when people make decisions to better themselves. They make plans to do anything to travel more, mark off things on the bucket list, lose weight, get more money, pay off more debt, be nicer to people, start a business, get a new job, and the list goes on and on with resolutions. 2016 promises exciting things this next year. Personally I am very excited about many things this coming year. I am exciting about our church and the direction it is going. I am excited about my family and the many blessings the Lord has given us. I am excited about new business ventures that I will be partaking in this coming year. There are many things I am looking forward to being a part of this coming year. Statistically there are 2 resolutions that stick out every year, losing weight and making more money! It is funny to me, that people make this same resolution every year. They do the same thing over and over and over again, but expect different results. You know what we call that? Insanity! The
very next year the resolve to accomplish the same thing they did the previous year. While losing weight and paying off debt, and putting yourself in a better financial situation are good things, how often do we think about our resolutions to living better for the Lord. 1 Corinthians 10:31 So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God. God deserves our best. He deserves our every resolve to live for Him. In this next year of 2016, make resolutions to serve Him in many different ways. Make resolutions to read your Bible frequently, pray more often, serve others, get involved in your community, get involved in your church. Plan how you can serve in missions. There is never retirement in serving God. We should always be seeking how we can serve Him and know Him better. Philippians 3:10a says, “that I may know him and the power of his resurrection…” How are you going to be close to Him by the end of 2016? If your life has not changed from the beginning of the year to the end of the year, are you really living for Him? Resolve to make 2016 a Christ centered year.

Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Winter
T
he cold winter months are typically the time of year when we rest and quietly reflect a bit more in order to conserve our energy for the burst of outward energy that comes in the spring time. In essence, it is a time for storage, and building up our reserves. In Chinese medical theory, this time of year places emphasis on the Water element, which corresponds to the Kidney and Urinary Bladder. The Urinary Bladder is considered the storehouse of emotions, and is one of the longest channels in the body, running from the head, down the back and legs to end at the small toes. Tension and held in emotions can cause congestion along this channel, which can lead to stiffness and pain. The Kidneys are perceived as storing the energetic life force; birth, life and death, or the cycle of transformation. The seat of willpower is situated here, generating ambition and the desire to do something with one’s life. Lack of motivation can reflect an imbalance in the Kidney energy. Both functionally and
energetically, the Kidneys act as a complex filter to keep our system in perfect balance. Physically, they filter the blood and keep the blood and body clean. For example, the delicate water and acid-base balance in the body is maintained by the Kidney. To help maintain a healthy Urinary Bladder and Kidney this winter, maintain your exercise routine, do not increase the level of activity (save that for spring and summer). Quiet activities such as playing cards and board games, meditation, and slow movement activities such as walking, swimming, yoga and tai qi are best in the winter. Eat cooked, easily digested foods such as soups and stews and root vegetables. Avoid over doing carbohydrates and meats as these cause too much internal heat production (inflammation) in the body. Also, keep warm, especially the lower back, belly and neck!

Sanctity of Human Life (SOHL) Sunday is January 17th, 2016, marking the anniversary month of Roe v. Wade. In 1973, the U.S. Supreme Court’s landmark decision made abortion legal in this country. Since that decision, over 53 million babies have been aborted. SOHL Sunday is an opportunity to focus our time and attention on God’s true plan and purpose for each and every human life. Because SOHL Sunday happens only once a year, Life Choices is excited and committed to helping you and your church make the most out of this special day. That is why we offer speakers to come into your church service or adult classes on January 17th (or the 16th, if your church has Saturday services). We would be honored to share with you about what God is doing in our communities through Life Choices and other organizations like us. Call your local Life Choices to schedule a speaker today! Get Chili with Santa—a Big Success!
T
his year during the Carbon Valley Holiday Festival a new dinner was launched! The first annual “Get Chili with Santa” event served nearly 200 people a delicious chili and cornbread dinner during Dacono’s portion of the event. This event was hosted by Mountain View Fire Rescue, United Power, Encana, and the City of Dacono. Due to this partnership, and the generous attendees of the event, the Weld Food Bank’s Mobile Food Pantry
Site in Dacono will be able to provide 800 more meals to those in need! Mountain View Fire Rescue is extremely appreciative of the partnership with United Power, Encana, and the City of Dacono. These organizations make community and generosity a top priority, resulting in a very successful event. Mountain View Fire Rescue would also like to thank Georgia Boys Smokehouse for cooking the delicious meals!

Long awaited Hospice Payment Reform goes into effect on 1/1/2016
This is a Thank You to all of the People who keep our families safe every day; our doctors, nurses, E.M.T’s, firefighters, police officers, and especially our National military personnel. Without all of the bravery and effort that you all contribute to the wellbeing of our country, we would not be where we are today.

F
or years the Center for Medicare Services, CMS, has been talking about reforming the hospice payment. Since the hospice benefit was carved out in 1983 there have been no significant changes in reimbursement. The hospice benefit has (4) levels of care: Routine, Respite, Continuous Care, and General Inpatient. Hospice has seen some reinterpretations in our regulations but we have not seen a major structural change. An example of a reinterpretation was when CMS decided that hospice was responsible for all costs related to the palliation of the terminal diagnosis and related to the 6 month prognosis. This change was officially made on Oct 1, 2014. Prior to this, and you may still see articles referring to the old way, hospice was responsible for all costs related to the palliation of the terminal diagnosis and related conditions. What CMS has been grappling with is what I would refer to as payment fairness. The cost to care for patients costs each hospice more at the beginning and at the end of care. How do you adjust hospice payment to reflect this? After many years of conversations, the inverted “bell shaped curve” will come into effect on Jan 1, 2016. This rate reform applies to Routine Home Care only. The patient’s home can be an assisted living, a skilled nursing facility, or a private home. It does not affect the Respite, Continuous Care, or General Inpatient rates since these are short term in nature. The Service Intensity Add on is an hourly rate paid
for a RN and/or Social Worker who are at the bedside delivering skilled services that are care planned. This cannot be used for unskilled services such as sitting with the patient so the spouse can go grocery shopping. Some hospices are worried that this is a significant rate cut disguised as rate reform. It will be a rate cut for those hospices that have long lengths of stays and/or do not provide a lot of skilled care. For hospices that are close to the National Average for both their average length of stay (73 days) and median length of stay
(19 days) and are providing skilled visits by an RN and a social worker in the last 7 days of life this actually comes close to our current rate structure if not more. Consumer beware – do not settle for less skilled care, medications, supplies, or durable medical equipment because “Medicare cut our rate”. For most hospices, this is not the case. For those that will see less revenue, their median length of stays may suggest that they are caring for a lot of chronically ill not terminally ill with a prognosis of 6 months or less.
As a family member told me recently, “not all hospices are the same”.

What a great opportunity to support the needs of the community and to find beautiful items for gifts or for yourself. This is the 30th Anniversary of this annual sale. To celebrate this event, we will feature DEAR JANE Quilts. Quilt lovers and American Civil War Era buffs will appreciate these quilts. In
1863, Jane Stickle finished the infamous sampler quilt that includes 225 different patterned blocks. The original quilt is at the Bennington Museum in Vermont. It features varied and elaborate geometric designs in colorful fabrics. There are several variations of this quilt that have been sewn since. Local area quilters have made their own version of the ‘Dear Jane’ quilt and these will be on display both days. ‘Dear Jane’ quilts are very labor intensive with intricate designs and quilting that are years in the making. Interfaith Quilters serve the community all year long by donating items to the Safe Shelter, Quilts of Valor for military veterans, Mountain States Children’s Home and other needs that arise in the community during the year. This active group of quilters in comprised of about 150 volunteers with various degrees of experience. It is a great place to learn to quilt or to just get inspiration for that quilt you have been meaning to sew. We gather most Mondays from 9 am until 3 pm at the First Lutheran Church
at the corner of Third Avenue and Terry Street, Longmont. Bring your Lunch. New members are always welcome. For more information about Interfaith Quilters of Longmont visit our web site at www.interfaithquilters.com or email interfaithquilts@gmail.com.

Diverse Housing Options Coming to Firestone
T
he Firestone community will soon offer diverse housing options to allow both current and future residents to select the type of home that fits them best. Until recently, Firestone had less than 40 apartment units in its historic area, with the majority of housing comprised of single-family dwellings. “Having a sufficient supply and selection of housing options is vital to the economic, social and cultural sustainability of our Firestone community,” said TJ Dlubac, Director of Community Development. “The Town should continue to ensure Firestone offers a diverse community with a broad set of housing choices for all residents.” As Firestone plans for future housing needs, the Town realizes that a diverse housing stock becomes more necessary. As the baby boomer generation ages, an increase demand for affordable senior housing and assisted living options increase. Alternatively, as the Denver metro area swells with millennials
flocking to the Front Range, the Firestone community must also address the changing needs of this generation as they seek rental opportunities and desire “lockand-leave” communities. The Firestone Board of Trustees has approved three multi-family home projects through the past 10 years. Cimarron Pointe is already going vertical with several apartment buildings located on Cimarron Street just south of Firestone Boulevard. This apartment complex will include 112 units within twostory buildings. The same developer is also building Firestone Meadows, which is located at the intersection of Firestone Boulevard and Oak Meadows Boulevard. Firestone Meadows will include 264 dwellings in 11, three-story buildings, as well as a clubhouse, greenbelt areas and a pool. The developers have already begun grading work at Firestone Meadows. Booth Farm Apartments was recently re-approved with no immediate plans for construction.

Frederick Announces Top 10 in ‘15 Town staff votes on Frederick’s biggest accomplishments in 2015
As
2015 ends and 2016 begins, the Town of Frederick staff rounded up the biggest achievements that propelled the community forward this year. We hope you enjoy this list, as voted on by Town of Frederick staff. 10. Arbor Day – As a newly named Tree City USA, the Town celebrated Arbor Day by planting a tree at each elementary school in Frederick and giving tree seedlings to all of the students who participated in the ceremony. We’ll be celebrating again and adding many more trees to the community in 2016. 9. DRCOG Award – The Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) recognized the Town’s efforts in revitalizing downtown and building community identity with a Local Government Award in the program’s Action category. The Action category recognizes completed or implemented projects, programs or plans that demonstrate follow-through on multiple goals of the region’s long-range plan. 8. Community Canvas Program – Through a partnership between the Frederick Arts Commission and Frederick Power & Light, the community gained two new pieces of art in the form of painted electrical boxes. The two local artists that were commissioned for these bright, active murals will be joined by other artists who will have the chance to create their own concepts as this program continues in 2016. 7. Safeway Traffic Signal – All of the requirements were met for the installation of a traffic signal at the entrance of Safeway and Frederick Recreation Area on Colorado Blvd. Safeway installed the signal as part of an agreement that was made when Safeway was built, and it will help to make a busy intersection safer. 6. Hotel Tax Approved – Voters approved Ballot Measure 2G to create a 4% excise tax for hotel guests, and showed they are ready to support the right kind of economic development for the future of our community. 5. Two New Events – Frederick created Chainsaws & Chuckwagons and DIY Day in 2015 and based on the response from the community, these two will be staples in the Town’s event lineup for many years to come. 4. Frederick Power & Light Improvements – Two new car-charging stations were added to Frederick through a Charge Ahead grant Delta 18” drill press with lasers. $375 OBO. 303-5521634 Bill Delta Unisaw 1 Face/230watts/3 horsepower. Saw is on 5” wheels in good condition $875 OBO. 303-552-1634 Bill [1-16] 1989 Ford F-250 Pick-up 4x4 for sale $3500.00 209,000 miles Same owner since 1998 Great work truck Call 303-818-6210 ask for Dave for details [1-16]
this year, one in Downtown Frederick and one at Frederick High School. Frederick Power & Light also upgraded all customers to advanced meters which cuts down on costs of manually reading meters and helps increase efficiency and reliability for better customer service. These improvements help to keep Frederick on the cutting edge of technology for the benefit of our residents. 3. Police Reaccreditation – Frederick’s police department met the extensive criteria needed to receive reaccreditation for another five years. The process took nine months of preparation because it’s meant to be an intensive procedure that requires a law enforcement agency to demonstrate and consistently maintain compliance with over 200 professional standards of performance. There are fewer than 50 police departments and sheriff’s offices in Colorado that have achieved accreditation. The fact that Frederick police have achieved and renewed accreditation shows their commitment to professionalism and excellence in community service. 2. Flood Repairs – We made giant leaps in flood recovery this year by completing the repairs and drainage improvements on Godding Hollow Pkwy (CR 18) that will now bring it up to 100-year flood capacity. Bella Rosa Parkway (CR 20) was also repaired and Wetland Loop was bid out and work began as 2015 ended. More improvements will be made to Godding Hollow Parkway east of Silver Birch Blvd (CR 11) and Wetland Loop will be completed in 2016, which will round out the entirety of the flood repairs. With the repairs behind us, Frederick will continue working to make sure drainage infrastructure is in place throughout the community well into the future. 1. Park and Trail Improvements – At the start of 2015, the Farm was a neighborhood without a park. Take a trail out for a visit now and you’ll find a playground, picnic shelter, benches and trashcans, with irrigation and landscaping to follow. We also improved trail connectivity in the Farm and near Summit View and Godding Hollow Pkwy (CR 18). Add in the installations of the recycling water unit for the splash pad and a bathroom at Crist Park, and it’s clear the Town is dedicated to continuously improving our parks! Check out a photo album of the Top 10 in ’15 on the Town’s facebook page at www.facebook.com/TownofFrederick. Joseph Emerson Durben
July 25, 1942 to December 17, 2015 Joseph E. Durben, “Joe” 73, passed away Thursday, Dec. 17, 2015, at Northern Colorado Medical Center, Fort Greeley, CO. following a courageous battle with cancer. At the time of his peaceful passing, he was with his wife Kathy and sons, Shane and Wade. Joe was born in Ft. Morgan hospital on July 25, 1942, He grew-up on a farm/ranch in the Adena area south of Ft. Morgan and graduated from Fort Morgan, High School. He was a carpenter by trade and worked in Colorado, New Mexico, and California constructing bridges and high rise steel buildings. Joe was one of two children born one year apart. Joe and Betty Louse were born to the late Fred and Martha Durben. He had three boys, Shane, Darren who died shortly after birth, and Wade. On April 12, 2008 he met the love of his life, Katherine Powers Durben, at “Home Plate” in Ft. Morgan. Members of the new extended family through this marriage were always welcome at the ranch Joe named “Poverty Ridge” and they have many enjoyable memories (such as 4-wheeling) of their visits. Joe is survived by his wife Kathy, son Shane, daughter-in-law Teri, granddaughter Danelle Marie; son Wade,
grandsons Tanner, and Tyler; and Sister Betty Lowrey, brother-in-law Bob Lowrey, and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his son Darren, his parents, and Carol Swopes-Durben. He loved touring the country riding his Harley and believed “No road is too long when you have good company” and in a biker’s world “There are no strangers, only friends, we have not met”. Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing especially with his sons. He introduced his city-slicker brother-in-law to prairie dog hunting. He was as accurate a shooter as anyone around and usually accompanied by his dog, the late Cash. In the past several years he enjoyed cutting, stacking, and selling firewood. Also, he enjoyed collecting coins and making wooden coasters. He was a member of the Elks, Carpenters Union, and National Association For Gun Rights. Joe’s remains have been accepted by the University of Colorado for scientific study. A Memorial Service will be held after the first of the year for all family and friends to share in a Celebration of Joe’s life. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice. Internment of Joe’s ashes will be in the old Adena Church cemetery.

New Creation Church Hosts GriefShare Class New Creation Church, 737 Bross Street, Longmont hosts a 13-week GriefShare session, beginning Tuesday, January 26, 7-8:30pm. The cost of the class is $15, which covers the cost of a workbook that is used during the week by the participant. The class is open to anyone who is struggling with the death of a loved one. You’ll discover there are people who understand your hurts, emotions, and painful experiences! When someone you love dies, it’s common to feel isolated. In GriefShare, you’ll find that you are not alone, that there are others who understand what you are going through. You’ll learn helpful, practical information that will help you recover from the pain of grief and loss. The GriefShare DVD videos feature top experts on grief recovery subjects and case studies of people just like you, who have been through the grief experience. You’ll begin to gain closure in your loss. It’s sometimes hard to move on in life when you are still dealing with the grief and emptiness that happens after a loved one dies. You’ll learn how to go through a healthy season of grieving, then begin transitioning to emotional and spiritual wholeness. You’ll discover hope for the future. While things may look bleak now, you’ll learn ways to restore your hope and rebuild your life. Many GriefShare alumni tell us the program helped them move from deep grief to peace and a sense of joy again.
A
re you struggling with your abortion decision? Do you think that you, or someone you know, might be suffering from post-traumatic stress related to that decision? While society tells us that abortion is not a big deal, those of us who have experienced abortions know differently. At Life Choices we know abortion is a life changing experience. Post-traumatic abortion stress can manifest itself in many ways. Often people do not realize that the stress and emotions they are dealing with are related to their abortion experience. Below is a list of common side effects for people who have experienced an abortion. Symptoms of After Abortion Stress: • I feel guilty and ashamed about my choice. (Guilt or Regret) • I am afraid people might judge me if they know I had an abortion. (Trouble making friend or sustaining relationship) • I keep making the same mistakes. I feel stuck in my life. (Feeling Inferior) • I do not have any dreams or goals; I just seem to be existing. (Hopelessness)
Continued Class topics include: 1. Is this Normal? 2. Challenges of Greif 3. The Journey of Grief 4. Grief and Your Relationships 5. Why? 6. Guilt and Anger 7. Complicating Factors 8. Stuck 9. Lessons of Grief 10. Heaven 11. What do I live for now. For more information, contact Barbara Mitchell at 720.261.6996.
• I have trouble making decisions. (Anxiety) • I am depressed. (Depression, Crying Spells, Sadness) • I get sick a lot and have reliability issues. (Helplessness) • I cannot forgive myself and/or I do not think God will forgive me for what I have done. (Shame) • I am afraid that if I get too close to people they will guess that I had an abortion. (Secretive) If you or someone you know, is struggling with any of these symptoms please realize you are not alone! There is hope for healing. Life Choices wants to give you help and confidential, non-judgmental support. We offer a comprehensive study for women who have experienced abortion, teens and men who are experiencing anger, guilt, shame, depression and other issues associated with the abortion decision. It is the desire of Life Choices to see a deep and abiding healing for all participants. You don’t have to feel guilty forever, instead you can let go of the guilt and shame and feel forgiven and set free. Contact Lisa Koets at lisa.k@ lifechoices.org to start your journey of healing if you live in Adams, Boulder, Larimer, or Weld counties. If you live outside of Northern Colorado, contact Option Line, www.optionline.org, for help in finding an afterabortion support and healing program in your area.
