Break Down on 119 Brings Miracle to Single Mom By Kelly Fordyce Martindale
L
ife can throw some very hard punches and Lori Klein has been knocked down multiple times this last year. After losing her accounting job in the spring, Lori had surgery on her broken wrist. Soon after, she tore tendons in her thumb, requiring more surgery. Because of the brace on her wrist, every job interview ended negatively. “It’s hard to type with a brace and accounting requires a lot of typing, Lori explained. 2017 used up Lori’s savings and, currently, she is struggling to save her home. On top of that, she requires more surgery and more recovery time. All of this happening as she tried to support her son, Jordon, after the loss of his dad in September. “Our relationship has been very strained for over a year, Lori said. “But in December, my estranged son was coming to see me. Then his truck Below: The Maggio Family
broke down at I25 and Highway 119. After learning of the breakdown, I did a search to find an auto shop close to the truck. Looking at the YELP reviews and seeing 5-star ratings, I called Hands On Auto Tech, just east of I25 on Hwy 119, at the Vista Commercial Center. Lori went on to share that after getting the truck to Hands On Auto Tech, owner, Thomas Maggio let her know that the fuel pump needed replacing. “He told me how much it would cost, along with multiple other problems that needed to be repaired. Overwhelmed and unable to afford the most immediate need, Lori started calling around to see where she could get it repaired for less. “So I called back and talked to Thomas and through choked words, I told him I could not afford to have the truck repaired. I told him I’d pay the diagnostic fee and I’d have to have it towed, Lori shared with me. Again, she could hardly speak as she was choked up, nearly in tears, retelling the story. Thomas Maggio shared his side of the story. “Lori called me to say she wanted to pay my diagnostic fee so she could have the vehicle towed to a budget shop in Brighton. I told her not to worry about the diagnostic fee and asked what I should do with the key.

She was thankful for me waiving the fee. After hanging up, I thought about it some more. After talking to my family, we decided to use our Christmas tree money, plus a little more and help her out. I gave Lori a call back and asked what she thought if we fixed the truck for free for her. She broke down in tears and the line disconnected. Tom says, “She wrote me the following e-mail shortly after I called her. Hi Tom, I'm sorry, I just kind of lost it. You have no idea what this means to me and my family. I've have 4 surgeries this year that has caused me to not work since April and no unemployment and my son’s dad just passed away at age of 55 in September. So, we've had it quite rough and we sure needed a boost of happiness. I can't stop crying. There are no words for me to express my gratitude for your shop’s generosity. It’s my son's first year in college in Casper WY so when I tell him, he will also be very grateful. Wow, Merry Christmas and just thank you to you and all your guys! My head is just not wrapping around this yet. You really are helping some people in desperate need. Merry Christmas and thank you, thank you, Lori & Jordon Lori finishes by telling me, “He fixed it all. Not just the fuel pump. No charge. It blew me away. This never happens to me
or my family, never in my life. “I’m speechless. There are no words for me to express the gratitude for what Thomas did. It was my son’s truck but after what Jordon’s been through, well, now through Tom, I was able to help my son. This showed my son I am there for him. It helped us all, she said. “Hands On Auto Tech cares about people, not just their vehicles, Lori said. “Tom’s gift was a miracle for me. Lori has two sons, Jordon and Nate. And the brightest spot in her life is her first grandbaby. Blake was born to Nate on November 30. Below: Lori with grandson, Blake

What’s On My Mind
Kelly Martindale, Publisher
As a past employee of The Yuma Pioneer, Greeley Tribune, Dallas Times Herald, Ft Worth Star Telegram & Denver Post, many yrs ago, I applaud your newspaper. I do wish that a simple breakdown of the upcoming ballot issues were explained and letters to the editor. Onward and Upward, Capt. Ernest Borders, Erie
Seek peace and pursue it.
Key to Freedom
W
hen a person changes from doing, or causing bad things and seeks forgiveness, true forgiveness, that person can move forward in freedom. True freedom. That person need not be weighed down by guilt and regret, any longer. How I wish I had made better choices in the past; in parenting, marriage, business, friendships, family relationships…the list is long. But sitting in the presence of pure love and experiencing forgiveness from all those things I’ve done, well, I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else. I was a prisoner to my life; from things I’ve done and things done to me. I lived in a cell, trapped by invisible bars for years. What I did not realize was that the key was on the floor within my reach. All I had to do was pick it up, put it in the lock, open the door, and walk out. But I was blind to that key. Wrapped in fear and confusion. I had accepted my lot in life. I now understand forgiveness to be through and through, done! Which causes me to marvel; I am free as if my offense never occurred. However, I have found myself to feel sorrow on occasion, that I
Psalm 34:14
even had it in me to do the thing I did in the first place. I do not stay there, in the sorrow, I give it back to the One who forgave me in the first place. And then I feel gratitude and thankfulness and love. I feel loved beyond measure; higher and deeper love than can be explained. That love and acceptance makes me want to be better…the best I can be. I want to be surrounded by that love, daily, minuteby-minute. Once, I was afraid of that love but now, I want it continually. To be loved and accepted for who I am, is quite the gift. There was a time, a very long period of time that I hid from that love because I knew I could never live up to the “expectations.” I knew I did not deserve a love so profound. It has taken most of my life to realize and then accept that that love has always been with me, has never left me, and has always been the truest love it can ever be. I finally understand that I was correct, I can’t ever live up to the expectations and that I do not deserve such a love; not on my

own. I now get that I just had to be me, tarnished, imperfect me. When I am who I am, not a fraud, not striving to be better, not perfectly positioned in prayer, just me…when I own my flaws and my faults, then I realize how loved I am. That is the key; to understand the love has always and will always be with me. And I now accept that love, in full. And I believe that love will never, ever leave. And I am content, fulfilled, with true inner peace, not lacking anything. That love was and is for me even if I were the only person on this earth. Jesus is the key that released the lock that kept me imprisoned. Jesus is the love that surrounds me and gives me freedom to share more love with others who are still trapped in their own prisons. Jesus sets captives free, and He has been doing it longer than any other human on earth. [NOTE: I consider myself a Bible believing Christian who strives to be more like the Jesus told about in the Bible, not any other person on this earth. Jesus of the Bible, loves ALL people, no matter what.]

Brides Celebrated, Validated and Affirmed at Dani West Bridal Boutique By Kelly Fordyce Martindale

ani West Bridal Boutique mixes a beautiful love story with wood and metal, earth-toned colors, plus romantic and vintage touches. Choose spectacular gowns from designer lines that are perfect for Colorado and destination venues in the mountains, meadows, beaches, and barn weddings. Additional designer lines offered are perfect for other venues. Owner, Patty Westenbroek says, “I also have a private collection that brides will only find at Dani West Bridal Boutique.” DWBB is located at 3335 Arapahoe Road, Suite 30, in Erie, and Patty promises to celebrate each, individual, bride. You can meet her at her grand opening February 3, 2018, from 6 to 9pm Patty says the engagement time in a bride’s life is extremely special and these life moments need to be cherished. Brides should be celebrated and encouraged. She says it’s also a stressful time. “I understand
brides and their unique family dynamics. Brides need a place of security and affirmation; the mothers do, as well. They have that at my boutique,” Patty assures. Clients immediately capture Patty’s excitement and anticipation. How can they not? Patty’s favorite life experiences have melded to create this exquisite boutique. “I hope everyone will feel the love that brought this dream to life,” says Patty. “I want to connect brides to other local vendors in the industry as well as connect them to other brides on the same journey.” Patty looks forward with plans to connect individuals through monthly events held at the boutique. She says, “Dani West Brides are set apart; we celebrate them, understanding their journey, and validating their process of selecting a dress that best expresses them.” DWBB includes special occasion formal wear and tuxedo partnering, sure to appeal to grooms, bridesmaids and

Jennifer Demster | 303.523.3351 | Jenn@AccountOnMe.org mothers seeking dresses. Clients will also find high fashion accessories and shoes. Local high school students should visit DWBB for what they need for their dance and prom events, as well. The team supporting Patty, in the shop, include Nancy Madland, from Lafayette. Nancy is a terrific asset and is an awesome stylist for brides. Janet Smith, from Erie, is an amazing receptionist and handles all bridal follow-up, plus, Janet leads the event planning and coordination. Patty’s husband, Dan, and their three daughters (19 & 14-yr-old twins), have been involved since the inception of DWBB. Patty says, “I’m blessed to say that each one in my family has a unique finger print
on how Dani West Bridal Boutique came to be. We’ve given DWBB a unique Coloradoey feel, rustic, yet with a modern romantic flair.” DWBB has barn doors on the dressing rooms and one of the most unique reception desks; created and built by her dad with painting and finishing help from her mom. Much love went into the desk. The love of family is evident as Patty shares. “When I suffered a traumatic brain injury 5 years ago and had to undergo a lifethreatening surgery, Dan vowed during that time to always help me reach my goals and dreams.” This family, together, has achieved that. Their pursuit of excellence will positively affect every client walking through the doors of DWBB. You might wonder where the business name came from? Patty calls her husband Danny and chose the feminine version of that, Dani. Then she took the first four letters from her last name, Westenbroek. This is just one small part of her “love” story making DWBB what it is. You’ll have to stop in the boutique to hear the rest of the story. Patty shares her heartfelt goal; to be a business in this world that is about goodness, fairness and people. “I’m a business that intends to earn the trust of its customers. I can say I’m a person of integrity, but you’ll have to experience my services to believe it,” she finishes. DWBB is open 11a-5p M-F and 10a-4p Saturdays and closed Sunday. Clients can call 303.665.2082 or go on-line for appointments at www. daniwestbridal.com.

very year more and more people discover why cruises are the ideal vacation. A cruise ship is basically your giant buffet of wonderful experiences, with a wide selection of cuisines and cultures, activities in the sun and spas to pamper your every indulgence, destinations to exotic, historical spots and a million ways to relax. You can do it all or do absolutely nothing - the choice is yours! To book the perfect cruise for you and your family, simply follow these helpful guidelines compiled by your travel counselor. Be sure that booking your next vacation should be as relaxing as the vacation itself. Where in the world do you want to go and for how long? The length of your trip largely depends on how much time and money you can afford. Cruises offer everything from one night excursions out to sea and back to journeys that take you around the world. With 70 percent of the planet covered in water, the next question should not be where to go to but where to go to first! Cruise ships visit many ports around the world, providing you with rare glimpses into many cultures all in one eye-popping vacation. Many first-time cruisers choose the Caribbean or Mexican Riviera, where you pleasantly float from one island or port paradise to the next. For a local alternative try Alaska, where you'll experience calving glaciers and curious
whales while following the Inside Passage or the Gulf of Alaska route. Alaska cruises have become so popular and even more year after year. Some of the best spots to see Alaska’s Incredible Wildlife are on a cruise and a tour inland. Alaska is among the top destinations for adventure travel and here is the opportunity to observe and interact with big wildlife. Few places beat Denali National Park for viewing 169 species of birds, 14 species of fish and 39 species of mammals that include moose, grizzly bears, caribou, wolves, linx and Dali sheep. Glacier Bay Whale Watching is another opportunity to experience wildlife in their natural environment. Going Places Travel is headed North to Alaska on a cruise and tour to Denali next summer and would love to share this amazing experience with you, your family and friends. We have a few spots left, so please feel free to contact Judy Bakanec, Going Places Travel in Frederick , for more information. Judy Bakanec is owner of Going Places Travel in Frederick. Wilderness Financial–Your Trail Guide
M
ost Coloradans love the wild of the Rockies and plains. Wild places call us often, with changing seasonal beauty - and changeable conditions and risks. That’s what makes for adventure – and makes it adventurous. We live most our days in the comfort of homes, offices, communities and cars, yet still exist in the great “wilderness” of life, subject to changeable weather, work, family, health, and socio-economic conditions. It’s easy to see how, just like out on the trails, what we’ve gathered and carry with us for “financial gear” is all we have when storms of life hit. Plus, to afford destinations we dream about, and have enough income for life, our financial supplies require custom-design to cover our journey -on a timeline. They must be checked fairly regularly. Changing conditions are certain on every trail. I encourage you to build a solid relationship with a fiduciary advisor and growing team who will endeavor to know you and your changeable needs just about as well as the financial territory they’re experts in. My firm’s mission and passion is helping people navigate transitions from late-career through late-life - goal results being less anxiety, more hope for the future, and greater peace of mind. We measure from the first meeting. We mutually decide whether we will work together, and if so how. Firestone was my home for 15yrs and I served as a Chamber Member-at-Large. In 2014, I moved to Longmont, where all my family is, and planted offices Downtown. Now, Wilderness Financial has expanded closer to Carbon Valley, to a more Regional location. We offer a menu of income and age-sensitive services, established to meet multi-generational needs ahead. Look for us off Hwy 119, across from Sandstone Park, in front of the huge Smucker’s plant construction. We offer no cost, no obligation events and initial consultations. Join us for our Open House Celebration, Fri, January 12th, 5:30-8:30p. Or attend one of our frequent Smart Community Workshops, next up: The ($) Path Less Traveled (Acing Personal Finance), Thurs. irestone was recently informed that the Colorado Department of Local Affairs awarded Firestone an $800,000 grant to exclusively be used for the Police Station. The location of the new Police Station will be east of a new extended section of Park Avenue. Park Avenue lines up with Devonshire Street to the north. The design of the bridge extension of McClure Street from First Street to Colorado Boulevard is now complete. With a contractor now selected, construction is expected to begin soon. The bridge and street extension should be completed and open sometime in the late summer of 2018. Firestone plans to design and construct the initial phase of a plaza complex in Central Park, south of the High Plains regional library. The overall complex is initially planned to be comprised of such major components as a plaza, passive sitting areas, parking lots, splash park facility, picnic shelters, landscaping, playground, restrooms and changing areas, trail connections, etc.

The Town purchased a share of Windy Gap water and now to use it, we need to be included in the Northern Water Municipal Subdistrict. If the Town does not get enough signatures, we will not be able to use this water in our distribution system and continue to expand its ability to deliver high quality drinkable water. he new year often arrives with thoughts of new paint for our homes. Which colors should we choose? Here are two complete color schemes to try. These exact color combinations will work beautifully, yet are neutral so that other colors can easily be exchanged or added. All colors are from Sherwin Williams. Color Scheme Beige/Off White Neutrals Entry, living room, dining room, kitchen walls: Softer Tan Hall, hall bath, smaller bedrooms, laundry walls: Moderate Master bedroom, master bath walls: Macadamia All walls in satin sheen Trim throughout: Pure White, semigloss Ceilings throughout: Ceiling white, flat Color Scheme Gray Neutrals Entry, living/
great room, dining room, kitchen, powder room walls: Repose Gray Accent wall in living room: Gauntlet Gray Stairway up, loft, hall: Eider White Hall bath, smaller bedroom walls: Eider White Master bedroom, master bath walls: Gray Matter All walls in satin sheen Trim throughout: Extra White, semi-gloss Ceilings throughout: Creamy, flat sheen We recommend sampling colors on your walls. Paint samples on poster board or stiff cards and tape on your walls in various areas: a wall that receives a lot of light, a wall in a darker part of the room, near the ceiling and against the flooring and trim. View them at different times of the day (and night) to see how they look. Stay in the room with the samples at the same time of day you would spend the most time in that room to gain a sense of the color.

Kelly Martindale wants to help those who cannot afford the big, important notices of life as well as the little things, like classified ads and birthday wishes. Totally
Body + Soul Wellbeing
Food for the Soul-What's New About New Years?
H
ere we go again! Another flip of the calendar and everyone makes a lot of commitments they probably won’t keep. Or at least not for long. Lose weight, get in shape, be nicer to your spouse, start a savings account; on and on go the lists of good intentions under the guise of New Year’s resolutions. Not that there is something wrong with resolving to improve your life. That is truly a good idea and one that more of us should endeavor to accomplish. But each year a whole lot more promises are made than kept. Following is a very strong recommendation from my personal history of 71 years that will enable you to succeed when it comes to keeping commitments. In I Corinthians chapter 5 and verse 17 we find a truth that is guaranteed to propel anyone who follows it to success in becoming better at the New Year’s resolution challenge. Here’s what it says: “Therefore if any man is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.” Let me break it down into bite-size bits for consideration. That “if” at the beginning is huge. Because choosing to yield your life to Jesus
is an ‘inside job’ that no one can do but you. Your mama or papa or preacher can’t do it. The pope or the president can’t do it. Like Smokey the Bear says, “Only you…” If you have read the Gospels and become familiar with the life and teachings of Christ, then you know what a good guy He was. The only perfect human being who ever lived, and the Son of God to boot. But knowledge of Jesus isn’t enough- you must yield your life’s throne to His Lordship if you would become a born-again Christian. That is how a person becomes “in Christ”, by letting Him take over your life. And what takes place after the initial bowing of your heart to the Lord is nothing short of miraculous! God makes us new and renewed. Old habits and patterns get replaced by new ones and things that are unhealthy for us physically, mentally, or spiritually are gradually pointed out for dumping in the trash and moving on with better choices. Like a total makeover! It may even include some of the things that have been on your New Year’s resolutions in the past. Only now you have additional power to carry them out instead of going it
alone as before you had Jesus in your life. Some of you who have read this far may realize that you have not given much credence to the Bible in your life, and I recommend that you’ll never start reading it any younger, so 2018 will be a good time to begin. I recommend the first 4 books of the New Testament called the gospels. Why? Because they speak of Jesus’ life and teachings more than any other place. I would start with John’s gospel as one of the clearest. As you seriously read these texts you will come face to face with this Man Jesus, and be enlightened with His sound advice and lifestyle. Then what you decide to do with Him is your choice. I met Him personally 47 years ago after finally reading this Book for myself as an adult. You can continue your habit of making pledges and breaking most of them, or you can learn to “delight yourself in the Lord” and allow Him to change you from the inside out. Your call. With surrender to Christ comes the indwelling Holy Spirit to equip you and sustain you through the challenges life throws at us. I have personally never been disappointed for a
day in His grace and mercy towards me. And my family has been blessed because He is so faithful to us. What do you have to lose? That’s what I concluded after reading and getting questions answered and challenged with what was I going to do with Jesus. I had nothing to lose and everything to gain. So I yielded to Him and got the new life Scripture speaks of. And this new life continues on into eternity. So what do you say? Make 2018 the year of decision and join the family. You will never regret having a personal relationship with the God of the Universe. And some of the benefits are truly out of this world!

How To Grow Your Business With Facebook Marketing In 2018
H
appy New Year! Here are some helpful ideas to boost your marketing for January: -Invite new people to your page. If your page has been stagnant for a while, set a SMART goal (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely). Organic growth for many businesses would be 10-20 new people per month. Invite them by email or on Facebook itself. Or you could place a targeted ad to reach your ideal clients. -Have a special deal or offer to kick off the New Year. If you have a product, offer 10% off. If you have a service, offer an add-on. This is one of the main reason people liked your page to begin with, so don’t underestimate an incentive to take action today! -Post one organic video a week. This should be directly loaded from your phone to Facebook. DO NOT use YouTube. It won’t get seen. Google owns YouTube and their main competitor is Facebook. Facebook will not promote
Y o u T u b e videos in their algorithm. What should your video be about? Tell them who you are, what you do, how you do it or WHY you do it. Give them a peek behind the scenes of your business. I hope that’s helpful! I offer one-hour consultations for $75. During that time, I’ll come to you with recommendations for your business and a digital strategy. Or hire me to professionally manage your Facebook page for your business. 303.518.0089 www.JenniePoppenger. com | facetoface@q.com
Park West in Erie
I
n the past few years Erie, Colorado has developed into one of the most profitable and successful places in Colorado to build businesses. The quality of life, highly trained workforce, incredible demographics and overall beauty are just a few reasons business owners are choosing Erie over other areas of the Front Range. Specifically, Downtown Historic Erie has become one of the most desirable places for businesses owners to set up shop. Between the restaurants, bars, events, historic feel and unique business along Briggs Street, the streets and sidewalks are filled with people. While this type of success is wonderful for Erie, it means property is in high demand and quite often limited. No one understands that better than D&H Erie, LLC the developers of the new Park West Building. The Park West Building will be located at Wells and Kattell across from the post office. The Town of Erie is unique in that
everyone in the Historic Old Town must pick up their mail from the post office which means these businesses will have high visibility every day. The building will be over 16,000 square feet and have availability for restaurants, retail and offices with suites available from 1,0008,000 square feet. “Two years ago Bill Dowd and I saw a unique opportunity to do something for downtown Erie when the lot at Wells and Kattell became available,” said Rich Hiegel of D&H Erie, LLC. “It has been almost 20 years since there has been new construction in Historic Old Town. We are happy to be part of the revitalization of Old Town.” The project was approved by the Town of Erie Board of Trustees at the November 14th meeting and is now in the stage of getting all the structural and engineering permits ready to submit. To learn more about the important project, please visit www.105Wells.com.
3rd Annual St. Vrain Christmas Walk a Huge Success
T
he 3rd Annual St. Vrain Christmas walk has come and gone and was met with huge success. To everyone who came out to enjoy the lights, the cocoa, and most of all the Christmas spirit, thank you for spending part of your holiday with us. It was such a pleasure to see the enjoyment on faces, young and old. So many people told us how it brought back fond memories of their childhood and were excited to see that same wonderment on the faces of their children. The Christmas Walk Volunteers would like to acknowledge and thank our sponsors, Carbon Valley Consumer Report, Home Depot, Tri-Town Lions Club, Chick-Fil-A and other neighbors who supported us with donations to support this event. We would also like to thank the Town of Firestone, specifically the Police Department and the Public Works Department who gave us invaluable support during the event. Both departments provided additional security and safety to everyone and for that we are very grateful. We met several police officers along the path. Your presence and involvement with the community was greatly appreciated. We were excited to be visited by, Take Note, a woman’s acapella group from Longmont. They entertained those strolling the path, and stopping for hot chocolate and cider at “The Hut.” Their beautiful voices lifted spirits and helped put people in a very festive mood. You may also have seen the Chick-Fil-A cow grazing the area in his festive holiday attire. He was the highlight of many visitors as evidenced by the many photos taken with him. Lastly, to all our wonderful neighbors; thank you for volunteering to light up your back yards and areas along the path. Without you, this event would not have taken place. Many of you added your own special touches and traditions; along with treats for those who were walking the path. Your generous spirit and focus on community is what truly made the Christmas Walk special for all those who came.

sing smart phones/tablets and sitting hunched over at your desk on a daily basis can contribute to painful muscles and poor posture. The effects of sustained forward head posture can cause pain in your neck, shoulder, and back muscles and contribute to loss of health and function. Pain causes the body to compensate and move differently to avoid the pain. Overtime, muscles and ligaments become trained to move differently with some muscles becoming overly strong and others weak. The unbalanced motion leads to postural changes, uneven wear, aggravates injuries, which then leads to the pain cycle. Even if bad posture isn't the direct culprit behind your neck/back pain, good posture is recommended to help ease it. There are many benefits of good posture including reducing stress, spinal protection/alignment, increase local blood circulation, elimination of muscle imbalances, and decreasing risk of injury with exercise/ everyday tasks. Why do a Posture Analysis? I'm using the best and most effective posture/ movement analysis software on the market. I'll take specific pictures of your posture that the software can accurately calculate how your posture is affecting the weight bearing load on your body leading to instability and wear and tear. Why do a Movement Analysis? Movement represents the functioning of the muscular, skeletal, and nervous systems. These systems form a triad that when operating correctly, allows for optimal structural alignment, movement, and
neuromuscular control. The software will analyze your movement while you perform a squat to help identify postural misalignments, muscle imbalances, and which muscles are firing/not firing correctly. After either analysis is performed, you'll receive a PDF of your results with specific details on deviations, muscle weaknesses, etc as pictured here. I'll be giving you an analysis based corrective exercise program consisting of specific exercises customized just for you based on your posture or movement analysis results. These corrective exercises are designed to break the pain cycle by restoring balance and fluid motion, improving posture, range of motion, and to protect against recurring injury. You get 24/7 access to your own secure exercise portal for online/smart phone access. You can view your exercises with instructional photos and videos, and track exercise progress. I can review and repeat the analysis pictures/ movements at regular intervals to show you how you're improving. The Posture or Movement Analysis can be performed on Adults, teens and children. This month I'll be running a special of $10 Off either the Posture or Movement Analysis with Corrective E x e r c i s e Program. Visit my website below for details. If you're looking to improve your posture or movement through analysis and a corrective exercise program, contact Tracy Rewerts, NASM CPT, FNS, WFS, IFSTA FRS at www. Your Home. Our Privilege.
W
hen it comes to looking out for home ownership across our great country, the National Association of Realtors (NAR) takes on the task on behalf of homeowners everywhere. During late 2017 when Congress was going back and forth over changes to the tax code, NAR worked with members of the House-Senate conference committee to help educate them on improvements to the final bill. President Elizabeth Mendenhall issued the following statement: "The results are mixed. We saved the exclusion for capital gains on the sale of a home and protected the mortgage interest deduction for second homes. Despite these successes, we still have some hard work ahead of us. Significant legislative initiatives often require fixes to address unintended consequences, and this bill is no exception. The new tax regime will fundamentally alter the benefits of homeownership by nullifying incentives for individuals and families while keeping those incentives in place for large institutional investors. That should concern any middle-class family looking to claim their piece of the American Dream." Although the final tax reform bill is far from perfect, it is significantly better for homeowners than previous versions. That’s thanks to the efforts made by REALTORS® generating over 300,000 emails and telephone calls to members of Congress over two Calls for Action and held countless in-person meetings with legislators, all of
which helped shape the final product. Last-minute changes to the bill include the following improvements: • Capital gains exclusion. In a huge win for current and prospective homeowners, current law is left in place on the capital gains exclusion of $250,000 for an individual and $500,000 for married couples on the sale of a home. Both the House and the Senate had sought to make it much harder to qualify for the exclusion. • Mortgage interest deduction. The maximum mortgage amount for households deducting their mortgage interest has been decreased to $750,000 from the current $1 million limit. The House bill sought a reduction to $500,000. • State and local tax deductions. Both property taxes and state and local income taxes remain deductible, although with a combined limit of $10,000. Both the House and Senate bills sought to eliminate the state and local income tax deduction altogether. Like with anything else relating to taxes, you need to look at your individual situation to see how things exactly will play out on your tax return.

Kristel Acre Joins RE/MAX Nexus
RE/
MAX Nexus proudly announces the company has been joined by Kristel Acre, who has over 20 years of real estate experience. Licensed as a Realtor since 2001, Kristel began in the industry in the mid 90’s working in several positions with McStain Neighborhoods out of Boulder. “I love selling new homes,” Acre commented, “and because I am familiar with the unique new home building and buying processes, I can really be an advocate for my clients in these circumstances.” A Colorado native (Lakewood) Acre has resided in Fort Lupton, her husband Mike’s hometown, since 1991. She and Mike, who also works in the home building industry, met when they were both students at Arizona State University. They have a spoiled rotten black lab named Jet who enjoys pheasant hunting, 4-wheeling and loves making new human and animal friends. Active in the Fort Lupton community, Acre was President of the Fort Lupton Chamber of Commerce in 2014, was involved with establishing the Family Resource Center of South Weld County, and currently serves on the City’s Art in Public Places Committee. One of Kristel’s passion projects is her membership in P.E.O. (Philanthropic Education Organization) which raises money for women’s college scholarships on the local, state, national and international level. “This philanthropy and sisterhood is near and dear to my heart since education is the key to all success,” says Acre. Kristel is also very involved with everything that happens at the Fort Lupton United Methodist Church. Being a Realtor suits Acre well. “I love helping my clients find their next “forever” home! Plus, I thrive on finding creative solutions to the various speed bumps or
problems that can crop up” she comments. Her biggest honor to date was being named Best Realtor of South Weld County by the public in 2015, 2016, and 2017. “This honor means so much to me. It means I am serving my clients well since they are the ones voting.” Kristel’s motto is “Home Is Where Your Heart Lives” as she knows that a home is much more than four walls and a roof. “Homes are filled with emotions-both good and badwhich create lasting memories. Moving is a time of letting go and looking ahead. The whole process is emotional and my goal is to help people through the transitions as gracefully as possible.” When she isn’t helping home buyers and her community, Acre has a history of experience in the musical world. As a singer, she has performed at numerous famous venues and sang on tour through Ireland, Scotland and England with the Longmont Chorale in 2013. Because of damage to her vocal chords, Acre has cut back on performing, but hasn’t lost her love for music. Acre is also a published author contributing a chapter on community service in “How To Buy and Sell Real Estate in Today’s Market”, a compilation by fellow Realtors and Lenders from around the country. You can contact Kristel at 303-8452373, or email kacre@remax.net.

EDUCATION TTER S A M
Warming The Homeless This Christmas By Jordan Sewczak
M
ead Middle School National Junior Honors Society (NJHS) held a coat drive to collect coats for Colorado Friendship. All coats donated from students at Mead Middle School will be distributed to the homeless. NJHS students worked hard to design and print out flyers. We woke up early to distribute all our coat drive flyers to all the cars during the freezing cold Monday morning drop off. Our goal was to collect 75 coats, but Mead Middle students stepped up and donated 100 coats. NJHS members strive to help others in our community and make the world a better place, or in the words of Blayke Reyburn, to “serve your community and help others.” Not only do we have an ambition to excel in academic activities, but we also love being a part of building a stronger community. Not only do we use creativity, but also character to make our community a better place. Our goal is to display leadership qualities, build leaders, and serve our community. As our pledge says, we “will maintain and encourage high standards of the following ideals: Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character.” One of my favorite parts of serving others is seeing a wide smile spread across someone’s face, showing that I have accomplished something that would benefit others. Even the simplest things could make someone’s day the best day. The other part of serving others that fills my heart with happiness is a random act of kindness. I feel a sense of accomplishment, but best of all is knowing that I have simply made someone’s day just a little better. After I have put much effort into making someone’s day, I move on to the next good deed.

Carbon Valley ‘Santa Cops’ Program Brings Holiday Joy to More Than 60 Families in Need
M
ore than 160 children received gifts from their holiday wish list, a visit with Santa and Mrs. Claus and a bit of holiday cheer at Town Hall in Firestone on Sunday afternoon. The activities were part of the annual Carbon Valley ‘Santa Cops’ program, an annual effort by the Firestone, Frederick and Dacono police departments to provide toys, clothing and gifts for children in need in the Carbon Valley area. More than 60 families in Firestone were beneficiaries of the event this year. Firestone Santa Cops coordinator Beverly Medina, along with Angel Gahnstrom, and Michelle Powers, all of the Firestone Police Department, have kept the program running for the past ten years. They’ve been sharing the joys of Christmas for years as they have witnessed a steady increase in those that are not able to provide holiday gifts for their children. According to Medina, “There’s no greater gift than seeing the children and families of this community coming together with city officials and our police officers to celebrate the season of giving. Hearing the kids walking through our
town hall talking about their visit with Santa or excitedly wheeling a new bike outside really brings home the spirit of the holidays and of our community.” Added Powers, “The joy of bringing Christmas to a child that may not even have one gift to open can be life changing.” The 2017 Firestone Santa Cops program was partially supported by a fundraiser by the Women of Global Change (WGC), Denver Chapter, along with the Fair Hand Foundation, along with other generous contributors. For more information on Firestone visit The Town of Firestone website at: http://www. firestoneco.gov. ountian Cowboy Brewing Company opened Dec. 26, 2017 after much anticipation. They are located at the corner of 5th and Oak in the heart of Downtown Frederick. They are hosting a Grand Opening weekend on the 12th and 13th of January and everyone is invited! Featuring their micro brews and roasted coffee, MCBC also offers "guest" ciders, some cocktails, and teas. Their drink menu includes lattes, cappuccinos, steamers, and Italian sodas. The renovated dance studio is beautiful and comfortable with couches, overstuffed chairs, tables and stools, all surrounding a wonderful fireplace. My favorite
part of the decor are the barn doors showcasing the brewing equipment from the dining area. High wood ceilings add to the open, relaxing atomosphere. Place your drink and menu orders with staff at the beautiful bar facing their magnificant coffee bean roaster. Both brews and beans will change and offer continued variety, so check in often. Mountian Cowboy Brewing Co offers indoor, outdoor, deck, and firepit seating. Good times for all.

No January Meeting on our last lunch before the holidays the Home Depot Santa surprised the seniors who were at the Friendly Fork lunch, he came with his elf, the store manager and one of her supervisors. When Santa asked Lee what he wanted him to do he was told anything that is legal, Santa said I can do that and away he went to a room full of smiling seniors. Home Depot did an awesome contribution to our lunch program and a thank you to the all volunteer team. Seniors sat on Santa's lap for photos, treats and hugs nothing could be better. The meals are served at noon, but you are encouraged to come early to visit with friends, there is a great salad bar and treats.
