District Girls Wrestling Team Hosting Spirit Night Fundraisers By Arizona Lee, Editor-in-Chief of Mead High School’s student newspaper, The Mav
This is the second year the Girls Wrestling team has been offered to SVVSD students; they have continued in another season of growth and success The SVVSD Girls Wrestling team was first offered to students for a competitive season during the 20202021 school year, initially starting with six members. Since then, the team has doubled in size and the girls have grown closer than ever before. Through the trials of starting a brand new “green” wrestling team, the girls developed strong relationships with each other and their coaches. Wrestler Jenna Joseph (‘22) attends Longmont High School. She said, “I know that [my teammates and coaches] will always have my back and I will always have theirs.” Kirsten Davis (‘23), an athlete at Mead High School, agreed. “We’re all very close,” she added. She said that even outside of the meets and practices of wrestling, the girls are there for each other. As with other athletics, the support fostered within the team has created an environment that Longmont wrestler Via Adams (‘25) described as a “second family”.
still taking any new members who are interested. Members need to have competed in five matches before qualifying for regionals, but beyond that, Davis (‘23) said “it would be awesome to see even more new people next semester”. No previous experience is required. In order to pay for athletic expenses such as new warmup equipment and team travel, the team will be hosting fundraisers at the Firestone Zoup! and Qdoba locations. The collective goal is to raise $3,000. Zoup! Girls Wrestling Spirit Night is on Jan. 7 from 5-8 p.m. (11169 E. I-25 Frontage Road, Firestone). Qdoba Girls Wrestling Spirit Night is on Jan. 10 from 5-8 p.m. (11169 E. I-25 Frontage Road, Firestone). In order for a purchase to count towards the fundraiser, customers must mention the district Girls Wrestling team. Please come out and support these amazing young women. Donations may also be made by contacting head coach and MHS Athletic Secretary, Rachel Salaz at salaz_rachel@svvsd.org. SVVSD wrestlers stand together for a team picture following their most recent meet of the 2021-2022 season.
All the hard work put into every practice session led to the girls finishing 5-0 in their first tournament of the season. Adams (‘25) initially went into the tournament feeling “insanely nervous”. “I thought I was going to do horribly,” she said. “But my teammates and coaches really brought me out of that state of mind, and I ended up winning both of my matches that day.” With such an incredible start to the season, “both the team and the coaches are really excited about where we’ll be able to go [this year]”, said Mead athlete Frances Hudson (‘23). Last season, two wrestlers on the team ended up qualifying for state, and Joseph (‘22) placed second overall. The team has continued on their path of success; just
this past weekend they placed fifth out of 40 total teams at the Northern Colorado Christmas Tournament. Along with proving to be successful in tournaments, which is especially impressive for such a young team, athletes shared that overcoming the many mental and physical challenges of wrestling have taught them lessons they believe they wouldn’t have learned from any other experience. The girls have learned everything from how to “push through the tough times”, according to Joseph (‘22), to the importance of hard work and how to “approach challenges with tenacity”, according to Hudson (‘23). The impact wrestling has had on many of the girls has been a positive one. This continues to be the only Girls Wrestling team in the district. They are

New Firestone Police Chief After a nationwide search, the Town of Firestone is proud to announce the selection of David C. Angelo as the new Chief of Police. The Town conducted a national recruitment and received 60 applicants, with half coming from 19 states outside of Colorado. The process included two rounds of initial screenings, telephone, and in-person interviews. Three finalists were interviewed by an external peer panel, a panel of sworn Firestone police officers, the Town Manager, and the Board of Trustees. From this process, the Town of Firestone selected Angelo to serve the Firestone community. “The Board of Trustees is thrilled to have someone of Mr. Angelo’s caliber leading our Police Department,” said Mayor Bobbi Sindelar. “As a Board, we were impressed by his experience, professionalism, and commitment to earn Firestone residents’ trust.” David Angelo comes to Firestone after serving the Houston Police Department for 27 years, where he’s spent many years in leadership roles. Prior to his work for the Houston Police Department, Angelo served in the United States Air Force and was honorably discharged. Angelo possesses a Bachelor of Science degree in Criminal Justice and a Master of Science degree in Strategic Leadership. Angelo is a proponent of community partnerships and is eager to foster those here in the Firestone community. “I strongly believe a police department must engage and partner with the community, thereby establishing trust. Without trust, the police cannot effectively do their jobs,” said Angelo. “Building trust internally within the police department and externally with the community and other stakeholders will be the cornerstone of my leadership practice.” Angelo’s first day on the job will be January 10, 2022.

Responsible Growth: Development Impact Fees increased by 2.5%, effective January 1, 2022. This increase is in accordance with the Impact Fee Study recommendations that was approved by the Board of Trustees in 2021. Impact fees ease the economic burden of growth, while maintaining reliable public services. Staff continues to work with the various resident and commercial development teams, and other potential developers,

Happy 2022, FRED! I hope you are ready for another year of joyful community celebrations. Here is what is new in 2022. At a recent staff meeting, Officer Paintin was awarded a Chief’s Commendation for her efforts in responding to a serious injury traffic accident. Officer Paintin was one of the first officers to arrive at the chaotic scene and quickly assessed injuries. Officer Paintin discovered a teenage female whose leg was pinned between the guardrail and the car. Officer Paintin sorted through the confusion of
as they prepare for upcoming application submittals. Reliable Infrastructure: Construction work has commenced on the new Public Works Facility, located on County Road 34, near Mead Ponds. The facility will include 7,500 square feet of office space, maintenance shop, locker rooms, restrooms, and a training room. It will better serve the community by enabling Public Works to consolidate equipment, manpower, and materials. We estimate a full transition by summer 2022. Public Safety: The Mead Police Department utilizes Weld County Communication Center for all police and code enforcement issues. Weld County Dispatch takes your report and then dispatches a Mead Police Officer to your location. This Dispatch Center is used by nearly all law enforcement agencies within Weld County. They are the most direct and reliable method to reach a Mead Police Officer for routine, non-emergency, matters. Fiscal Stability: The Board of Trustees approved a
balanced 2022 Budget. Budget work started in July 2021. The Board of Trustees reviewed all financial information and discussed revenue, expenditures, and goals for 2022. The 2022 budget reflects our commitment to service, while maintaining fiscal responsibility. Connected Community: The Town of Mead is honored to have been selected to host The Wall That Heals this August 1821, 2022. The Wall That Heals honors the more than three million Americans who served in the U.S. Armed Forces in the Vietnam War, and it bears the names of the 58,281 men and women who made the ultimate sacrifice in Vietnam. Make sure you subscribe to our monthly Mead Messenger and sign-up for email notifications: www.townofmead.org/newsletter/subscriptions. the scene, gave comfort, and quickly organized others on the scene to help push and rock the car just enough to free the young lady. Officer Paintin continued to render care and comfort to the wounded people until medical personnel arrived. Officer Paintin’s performance was exemplary. Great Job, Officer Paintin, and thank you for your efforts! You look beautiful, Frederick! The 2022 Built On What Matters Calendar is now available. Be on the lookout for your copy in the mail. Extra copies are available at the Administrative Services building (311 Fifth St.) Coordination efforts continue with CDOT and United Power regarding installing a streetlight at the intersection of Tipple Parkway and the Frontage Road. CDOT has indicated that they will support a permit for the streetlight. The project now awaits the availability for United Power to schedule an installation. This intersection needs to be safer, and this light will help with that and overall traffic flow. The BOT has approved a 10-year water master plan. While also working on a 50-year plan, this stepping stone is inaugural for Frederick and will aid in efforts such as: 1. Purchasing additional units of CBT to utilize in negotiations for
economic development purposes. 2. Converting parks from potable to raw water. 3. Water supplies from firming the Town’s Windy Gap units in Dry Creek Reservoir support purchasing an additional unit of Windy Gap water to firm in the same reservoir. 4. Reducing outdoor demands through conservation with programs identified in the Water Efficiency Plan. I know it is not an enjoyable thing to raise rates of any kind. However, In January 2020, the Town of Frederick Board of Trustees passed Resolution 20-R-11, amending water service charges that approved a 5% water rate increase starting 2021 through 2025. Frederick residents will see the increase on their January 2022 bill. Water rates rise based on increased consumption and need in Colorado. It is important to note that changes in the rates are passed through from the Central Weld County Water District. Therefore, it is used to serve the consumption of current Town residents. The increase applies to usage only and will not apply to the base rate.

SHRED HUNGER First Annual Event Shred Hunger celebrated its first official annual event in 2021 – a food drive, fundraiser, and festival supporting our local and surrounding community residents through Carbon Valley Help Center, CVHC. Shred Hunger was founded by local real estate agent Tracy Graham with Keller Williams 1st Realty as one of CVHC’s largest fundraising and food drive events. The Value of a Memory Preserved What is your most precious memory? What made it so special to you? How would you describe it to someone? Do you have ten moments of your life that you would rate the most significant? Have you captured them in writing? These are what truly define you and make you unique! If you haven’t written them down yet, I encourage you to do that. Our memory is a gift not to be taken for granted. As we age, some of our memories tend to fade or blur together with other memories. Nearly 6 million American’s are living with Alzheimer’s. It’s wise to write down your memories now while you can. Capture what happened - but also describe how you felt, the music you remember, the smells and sights you experienced, the places you’ve been and what made you feel alive! In my business I help people by listening and asking questions. I type while they talk. At the end of our sessions, I compile a beautiful faux leather book for them to keep and also give them a USB with the document so it’s sharable. The experience is different with each person. If you’re ready to start documenting the most important things in your life, or if there’s someone dear to you that you’d like to do this for, please visit www.JenniePoppenger.com to learn more or email facetoface@q.com.

5 Effective Ways to Boost Online Sales A successful first quarter can set the tone for your entire business year. Here are a few simple pointers to help you get off to a great start, Set Yourself Up for Success. As much as we’d like to think of sales as a switch that we can turn on or off, it’s a process that takes ongoing commitment and dedication to lead customers through the natural stages of relationships. Warming your audience is a wise investment of time! Paint a Picture of Transformation. People don’t just buy products, they buy the transformation that the products deliver. Show people how much better their life can look because they purchased from you. Paint a picture by using visual imagery. Position Your Brand With Intention. Help potential customers win the day by finding the solutions they seek. Show them how you are the expert who is best positioned to lead the way. Crush the Objections. Every customer can think of a reason not to buy from you. Name their objections and help them see that the benefits outweigh their hesitations. Ask for the Sale! I see brands all over social media telling us all about their products. They show us pictures and testimonials, benefits, and pricing, yet they don’t ask for the sale. Give customers a clear call to action. Provide a “buy now” button and show them how to take the next step. Never assume they know you want them to buy. The 4-H sponsored buffalo hunt was a huge success at the annual fundraiser in Greeley November 20, 2021. The theme this year was “Wild Wild West” so the Firestone Free Thinkers 4-H Club decided to do a Rubber Band Gun buffalo hunt using 10 handmade postcard sized wooden buffalos. Shown in the photo are Colten and Kenzie Lammers of Firestone trying their luck at one of the many fun-filled events at the Mardi Gras event. All the 4-H clubs in Weld County had a booth and many auction items that raised a total of $23,000 to support 4-H activities. Major contributors to The Firestone Free Thinkers was Stapp Toyota and Murdochs. The next major event is The 4-H Showcase January 8, 2022 at The exhibition Building in Greeley at The Fairgrounds. The event will showcase many of the 40 different projects that kids can choose from to study and show at the Weld County Fair next summer. The event is open to the public and is free of charge. Hot dogs will be served. Now is the time for kids 5 to 18 to join 4-H and learn valuable life skills while having some fun. Join on line at www. Health& WELL BEING Food for the Soul: The Year of Our Lord 2022 by Jim Coleman We live in turbulent times. The whole world seems to be shaking with economic challenges, a global pandemic, weather challenges, political unrest-not to mention the everyday strains of life as we raise our families and seek to earn an honest living. 2021 has for many been a difficult year, filled with the unexpected and more difficulties than many have seen in their lifetime. But a fresh year awaits us; the year of our Lord 2022 has arrived, full of hope and expectations. We often call each new calendar year “the year of our Lord”, and that is a fine and true statement, but will 2022 actually be THE year that we see the return of Jesus Christ to clean up the many messes all around us? He said He’d be back, and Christians have for many decades been faithfully awaiting the fulfillment of His promise to return. I make no claim to being a prophet, but I can see many things that lend themselves to what has been stated in the Bible about our Lord’s return. Let me draw your attention to the gospel of Matthew chapter 24. Beginning in verse 3 Jesus answers His disciples’ questions about “the sign of Your coming and of the end of the age.” Lots of fakes and phony’s claiming to be the Christ; lots of wars and rumors of wars; famines and earthquakes; followers of Jesus being
persecuted and hated; many falling away from faith in Jesus; false prophets misleading many; a cold harshness among most instead of love; the gospel being preached in the whole world. Much of this is ongoing and has been for a long time. Starting in verse 15 the focus shifts to Israel and the challenges to be faced in that nation. While history reveals that Jewish people have faced numerous difficulties over the centuries, this last one may top them all for its magnitude. There will again be persecution of God’s people; weather phenomenon never before seen; and a host of angels all over the sky. These things precede the Lord’s return, but most of earth’s population will not understand what is happening. In fact, Jesus compares it to the days before the Great Flood, when most people were “eating and drinking, they were marrying and giving in marriage, until the day Noah entered the ark, and THEY DID NOT UNDERSTAND UNTIL THE FLOOD CAME AND TOOK THEM ALL AWAY.” He goes on to say this profound statement which all of us should grasp: “So shall the coming of the Son of Man be.” The flood was many moons ago, and some don’t even acknowledge that it happened, but the scientific evidence is strong, and the Biblical statements are clear. Jesus will return very soon
to straighten up the chaos that is in our world. In verse 44 He says, “For this reason you be ready too; for the Son of Man is coming AT AN HOUR WHEN YOU DO NOT THINK HE WILL.” How many people in our world today do you suppose are looking for His soon appearing? Not many- even in the churches. We have become complacent about these passages and numb to their impact. And we are further encouraged by the words of Christ in chapter 25 verse 13, “Be on the alert then, for you do not know the day or the hour.” There is a very special reward offered for those who “love His appearing”. You can read about it in 2 Timothy 4:8. May I encourage you who have a personal relationship with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ to place yourself in that group who eagerly await His coming. God does not expect us to stand around looking into the sky like the disciples did when Jesus ascended into heaven after His resurrection. I believe He wants us to go and do the assignments He has given us to accomplish both individually and collectively. We need to have an “all hands on deck” type of commitment in these trying times. Many people would follow our Lord if someone would tell them of His love and forgiveness. Someone in your circle of influence may be waiting to hear from you

of the wonders of His love, as we sing in the song Joy to The World. 1999-2022 Will you do what you can to both share the love and show the love of Jesus to them? Their eternal destiny hangs in the balance, and YOU may be the messenger appointed by God to be His mouthpiece. Let’s not be responsible for leaving people unaware of why the ground is shaking these last days. Tell them of our Creator who offers eternal life AND an abundant life in this fallen world we inhabit to those who will take Him at His word. This could be the year!

Alternative Medicine: 2022, Year of the Water Tiger The 10 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge Is Back There is so much to share about this year’s Chinese New Year that this will be a two part article to be continued for the February issue. There are major changes coming and it’s so much fun to explain things in more detail through Chinese medicine and the Five Elements. For example, two consecutive years are spent in the same element (there are five elements: fire, earth, metal, water and wood). The last two years were spent in the Metal Element, which corresponds to the season of autumn, the organs Lungs, Large Intestine and skin, and the immune system. Here are links to the previous two years: www.daisylear. com/2021-year-of-the-metal-ox and www.daisylear.com/2020-year-of-the-metal-rat We will spend the next two years in the Water Element. The fun superficiality of the Chinese calendar actually runs deeply from observations made thousands of years ago that still apply to life today. Like Chinese medicine, the calendar is pervasive throughout all aspects of being human, affecting day to day living, farming, health care, etc. As we strive to live in harmony with our environment, we also notice how we change and respond with each season. Each season corresponds to the Five Elements; fire/summer, metal/autumn, water/winter, wood/spring, and earth/ transitions, as well as internal organs, sound, direction, etc. And like everything you can possibly think of, each element also has Yin/still or Yang/active aspects. We begin this two year Water Element cycle with Yang; yang water represents the more active and moving bodies of water such as oceans, seas, rivers and lakes. Yang water needs a strong and still (yin) Earth Element to create boundaries for it, otherwise yang water moves in a directionless manner. Water’s corresponding season is winter, the associated environment is cold, the direction is north, the taste is salty and the color black. Now that we’ve looked at water in our environment, let’s see what’s happening inside each of us. According to Chinese medicine, Water corresponds to the Kidneys and Urinary Bladder, water metabolism, bone and bone marrow, the pertaining sense organ ears/hearing, head hair, the reproductive organs, lower back, knees and ankles. From this list it is obvious that these aspects of ourselves are typically exuberant when we are young, and naturally decline as we age. However, certain circumstances and stress can cause one or more of these areas to wane earlier than “normal”. In a human life cycle, Winter is associated with our waning years. Emotionally, the water element is associated with courage and fear. Water also corresponds with money and responding more intuitively to situations. The Water element is ever changing - emotional. Water takes on the shape of anything is it poured into, and likewise freezes into any shape. If we tune into water, this can help us “go with the flow”. We will continue the next article with information about Tiger, and bring the whole picture of the Water Tiger together. Three Things About Calories & Weight Loss Every year, millions of people make New Year’s resolutions, hoping to make positive change. Exercising more, losing weight, quitting smoking, and living life are just a few of the recurring themes each year! We’re not far into the 2022 New Year. How is your health resolution going? Regarding weight loss, we often think of the simplicity of tipping the balance of energy in (food) and energy out (exercise). And in order to know what is coming in, we track our food via an app that gives us lots of information, specifically, the number of calories consumed. There are three things inherently wrong with this. 1 – most people under report calories by 35%. 2 – we strive to hit an estimated calorie per day number and 3 – different types of calories affect us differently. Regarding tracking our food and exercise - on average we under report calories and over report exercise. We “guess” at a serving and even when we know what a serving is, do you weigh and measure that serving accurately? Let’s do some math. Let’s say you under report your calories by 75 calories per day, which is super easy by the way. 3,500 calories is one pound. Here’s the math - 75 calories a day * 365 days in the year = 27,375 total calories. Divide that by 3,500. That equals 7.8 pounds gain per year! Second, that estimated calorie per day calculated based on a few factors, is really a mystical number. It does not honor our bio-individuality. We are all different – our interpretation of activity level is different, we metabolize food differently, and our current state of health or starting point is different. You can go ahead and use that calculated daily calorie number but only as a general reference point. Don’t get hung up if you are above or below that number. Lastly, and my favorite. Not all calories are created equal. 1 piece of white bread and 2 cups of broccoli don’t have the same effect. Although both have approximately the same

Do I have my clients track their food and activity? Yes. But not because I’m tracking them to a number. It’s all about what they are eating and how they are moving that I’m interested in. The goal of tracking is only an initial activity. Ultimately, intuitive eating, balance, and a healthy, sustainable lifestyle is the goal. Don’t leave your health to hope. Metro Districts
With the new property tax assessments coming out, there has been a lot of discussion about not only property values, but also property tax amounts. You may have heard of, or be living in, something called a Metro (Metropolitan) District that is one of the entities that you pay property taxes to. There are several type of Special Districts in the Carbon Valley area ranging from Fire, Library, or Recreation to Metro Districts. In recent years, many new developments have been done using a Metro District as a development tool to finance the development of the subdivision. Basically, instead of the developer putting up the money to put in infrastructure such as utilities, sewer lines, streets, etc., a special taxing district is formed to finance those improvements. Then, those costs are paid for over time through property taxes rather than in the lot or home price. So, theoretically, you are purchasing the new home for a lower price because you are paying for the development over time through the Metro District. Because of problems with Metro Districts in the past, they are now limited to the number of mils they charge. Many of the districts in the area are in the 40 to 60 mil range, but I’ve seen as high as around 80 mils. Sometimes, the mil levy also takes care of things other than infrastructure such as open space, common areas or other amenities for the development. In that respect, they are kind of operate similar to an HOA, but they are structured differently. To give some perspective, most areas within Frederick, Firestone and Dacono that don’t have Metro Districts, have a mil levy rate of about 100 mils. Within a Metro District, that total mil levy is around 150, so that is why the property taxes are higher. If two homes have the same assessed valuation, the property taxes for the one not in the Metro District would be about 33% lower. Keep this in mind when it comes to consideration of a property tax proposal for one of the local entities. We have so many different taxing authorities (town, county, schools, fire, rec, water, sewer, library, and metro) and they all have their own budgets. So, if one wants to get more money to take care of what they do, they have to look to the voters for approval as they can’t just reduce spending in another area that is outside their own jurisdiction. If you want more information, the State of Colorado’s Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) has published Special Districts: A Brief Guide for Prospective Homeowners. Give me a call and I’ll email you a copy.

Christian apologetics is the art of giving a reason for your faith in Jesus Christ. When used with respect toward others in gentleness and love, it can provide a means of helping remove hindrances to faith. This is why the use of apologetics in conversation with friends and acquaintances in the workplace, neighborhood and home can be so useful in pointing people to Jesus Christ. This group is an introduction to the study of apologetics and all denominations are welcome. Meetings will be held every other Sunday at 3:00 p.m starting January 23, 2022. Prior to each meeting, participants will memorize one verse and read an article (or watch a video) to prepare before the meeting. The meetings will include discussion and conversational apologetics practice. For more information or any questions, please do not hesitate to e-mail me. Also to inquire about the location of the meetings, e-mail me at brissa.apologetics@gmail.com. No question is too silly or small.

Victoria Roffers
August 6, 2018 ~ September 18, 2021 (age 3)
Victoria Lee Roffers (Baby V) passed away unexpectedly Saturday morning September 18, 2021. She was born Monday August 6, 2018 in Longmont, CO prematurely at 27 weeks. She weighed 1lb 10oz and was 12 ¼ inches long. She was airlifted after birth to Poudre Valley Hospital where she spent 2 weeks until she became ill. She was then airlifted to Children’s Hospital in Aurora, where she would spend the next 126 days. Baby V grew strong and healthy enough to finally come home to her family. At home she was surrounded by loving parents, siblings, and even her dog Maggie. She was a very smart and happy little girl that always had a gleam in her eyes. Although she was tiny, she was never restricted from doing anything or accomplishing what she set her mind to.
She is survived by her parents, Mark and Samantha Roffers, and siblings Keaton, Mallory, and Dalton. Grandparents Richard and Dianne Roffers Jr, Uncle Patrick (Dana Dix) Roffers, and Aunt Melissa Roffers. She enjoyed watching Bluey, Tots, Peppa Pig, Trolls, Frozen, and Minions. She loved being Keaton’s video game partner, having Mallory do her hair and making her “Pretty Girl”, and playing dress up with Dalton as super heroes, The Hulk or Flash. She loved to “jumpy jumpy” on the trampoline with them all, going for nightly walks around the neighborhood, and fun filled days at our park. Victoria has touched the lives and hearts of everyone that has come to know her and follow her story. Her family, friends, community, people near and far, and our home away from home, Wisconsin. Although her life was short, she did big things, tiny but mighty. #VStrong
