Creating Community By Connecting Neighbors He restoreth my soul - Psalm 23:3
July 4th, 1776 or July 4th, 2016—Independence Day When in the course of human events …..
T
hus began one of the greatest documents in American history. It is considered by many to be one of the greatest documents in the history of the world, but what does it mean to people today? It seems that today the 4th of July is more about fireworks and picnics than it is about freedom and the beginning of our nation. Is it because we have lost the feeling of being one nation? Teddy Roosevelt felt that the only way to become a citizen of our country was to become an American completely. To him that meant that you were no longer African-American, Mexican-American, Jewish-American, Muslim-American, Catholic-American or any other –American. You became an American. That was all you were, completely American!
Does that mean that you forgot about where you came from and who you had been? No, that is your heritage and your background. Those things that you brought with you, and that your family brought with them are an important part of who you are. What it does mean though is that you do stop thinking of yourself as someone separate from the rest of this country. Everyone that had immigrated to the United States until the 1970s or so had always wanted to be an American. No hyphens. Then for some reason, it became popular to be a hyphenated American. I guess it was to make you special or separate or unique from everyone else, and that was the start of the problem. Once we started separating ourselves into groups and hyphenated organizations we started becoming less than
the whole of who we are. We are not –Americans, we are all only Americans, and that is what we need to become again. We need to stop thinking of ourselves as separate groups or races or identities and remember that we all wanted to be here and wanted to be Americans. Many of us were born here, and did not have to work to get here. We can thank our families, no matter how long ago that was, for that privilege. Others of us did have to work to get here, because of the desire for a better life for ourselves and our families. That is also one of the reasons that this country even exists. It does not exist as a group of individual hyphenated American sections or colonies. We merged the 13 original colonies into the United States starting in 1776 with the document signed on July 4th.
The Firestone Police Department participates annually in the National Night Out program and is excited to offer a fun community event with a concert in the park, fun games, ice cream and food truck 6-8pm. Settlers Park, 11447 Deerfield Dr Food truck: Butcher & the Blonde Music: Steve Manshel With the focus of the event aimed at providing safety information and to heighten
It is time, after 250 years, that we remember why this country fought the mightiest country on earth at the time, and became the youngest and newest country on the earth. We have stood for what we believed then and must continue to stand for those beliefs, but we cannot do it as a hyphenated America. We can only do it as a joined America. Let us begin on this July 4th 2016 to start again thinking of ourselves only as Americans. No more divisions, no more hyphens. If you want to be an American, then join with all of us who are already Americans, and call yourself an American. If you feel that you must be a something –American, then you may want to consider the fact that this may not be the country for you. We need all of the Americans we can get. The Carbon Valley Consumer Report—Bringing Residents Information About Area Businesses
What’s On My Mind
Kelly Martindale, Publisher
Do We Agree to Disagree? “Laws alone cannot secure freedom of expression; in order that every man present his views without penalty there must be spirit of tolerance in the entire population.” —Albert Einstein
An Email I Received “...You are simply violating my freedom from religion. Is there a way to get removed from this highly offensive cult material?” The easy answer is “no.” My business utilizes the United States Postal Services opportunity to mail “bulk” to every household and business in the areas I choose. You may, however, personally ask your mail carrier to not deliver it to your address or you may recycle. I share a portion of a reader’s email because the email wasn’t about the Carbon Valley Consumer Report, as a whole. The email was about intolerance to “seeing” Bible verses and reading about Jesus (two small parts within 32 pages of information about the communities we mail to). I’m thankful to say, for almost 18 years, the only complaints I ever receive about my publications have to do with the Bible verse and my column. My editorial column is where I share my own

personal experiences of my life after losing two children, getting through divorce, struggling with forgiveness, etc. I share life issues that I believe others have also had to deal with but usually they deal with the issues alone. Nobody wants to face hardships alone.
“In the practice of tolerance, one’s enemy is the best teacher.”
Definitions
“[I]n today’s relativistic environment, pluralism no longer means tolerating competing ideas, but rather forced neutrality: no one should express any idea that could offend another.”
tol·er·ance täl(ə)rəns/ noun 1. the ability or willingness to tolerate something, in particular the existence of opinions or behavior that one does not necessarily agree with. in·tol·er·ance in täl(ə)r ə ns/ noun 1. unwillingness to accept views, beliefs, or behavior that differ from one’s own.
Who is intolerant? “The liberal idea of tolerance is more and more a kind of intolerance. What it means is ‘Leave me alone; don’t harass me; I’m intolerant towards your overproximity.” —Slavoj Žižek a Slovene sociologist, philosopher, and cultural critic.
—Dalai Lama XIV “The highest result of education is tolerance” —Helen Keller
—Charles Colson
What Now?
Is there a way to respect each other’s opinions and do so without devaluing or being disloyal to our own belief system? I think so. I don’t know why the aforementioned reader is in such opposition, but there is a reason. I respect that. And I’m grateful to live in a country where I can make a living helping others make a living. This publication is a venue for independent business owners to get the word out about their services and goods in an affordable, professional way. Always An Answer Telephone Service for Those Who Don’t Have Time to Answer By Kelly Martindale, owner of Carbon Valley Consumer Report, Mead Consumer Report, Erie Consumer Report, and i25 Corridor Communities Magazine
F
rom one man who serenades Cathy every time he calls, to my own mom, who tells Cathy when I’m sick or if it’s my birthday; Cathy has heard it all. Cathy Scofield owns the phone service, Always an Answer, and calling her in 2005 was the first best thing I ever did for my business. Always An Answer has clients including veterinarians, publishers, landscapers, HVAC, doctors, and more. They offer telephone answering services 24/7, utilizing a customized script from each client. Many of my callers think they’ve reached one of my office staff ; which they haven’t as I don’t have any staff…which is why I depend so much on Always An Answer. July 1 is the start of Cathy’s 11th year in business. She employees several staff : MaryLu, an operator for 8 yrs, Aaron, an operator for 5 yrs, Regina, an operator for 1 yr, Julia, a newly hired operator (2 weeks), and Jeff Taylor, Cathy’s Computer Rehab (IT guy) for the last 10 years. Each of Cathy’s staff are professional and personable. When someone calls my business number, one of the staff answers. They let the caller know I am not available and take all the pertinent information and then immediately email me that information. If it is an emergency, they call me on one of my other numbers they have on file. Not only do my clients get a real live person to speak with, I have the email to follow up on and I can look back at it if I need to read it again. Cathy says, “The thing I love most about what I do is hearing everybody’s ‘story’. It is amazing what you can learn about someone in a 1 to 2-minute phone call. There are some people out there who are just plain lonely and they know if they call their doctor after hours, they are going to get a live person ‘just to talk to.’” Cathy shared that just after purchasing her first home, the company she worked for moved to another state and she was laid off. She was also working part-time in the evening as a receptionist but that was not enough income to make her mortgage and other payments. Stress was affecting her sleep as she had no idea how she was going to pay her bills. One night after finally falling asleep, she woke up abruptly at 3am and was wide awake. “The Lord clearly spoke to me,” Cathy shared, “and He said, ‘I don’t know why you are stressing over this. Don’t I ALWAYS HAVE AN ANSWER?’ It hit me square in the face. That’s it! I am going to start an answering service and I am going to call it Always An Answer! So the name of my
business actually has a double meaning. To me, it has always been all about HIM.” My newspaper businesses are better because Cathy received her answer from the Lord and she listened. I depend on Always An Answer every day and I’m not the only one. If you could use the services of Always An Answer, give them a call at 303.678.7608. Here’s what another client said about Cathy and her wonderful business. “Always An Answer, with Cathy and her service professionals, are a surviving factor for my landscape business. Because they relay messages in the best possible fashion you can imagine and set up the information to be relayed with them. When you decide to use Always An Answer you will never want to stop using them. I promise.” Jordan Oliver President Garden Art Landscaping, since 1982.

we are more than just Longmont. We support the cites of Dacono, Frederick, Firestone, Longmont, Mead and the surrounding areas. During the month of May, the Longmont Elks remembered and honored those that are among the most important in out lives. On May 8th, we honored our mothers and mothers everywhere with a brunch at the Lodge. On May 21st, we honored our current military members as well as our military veterans with a dinner and dance at the lodge. We danced the night away to the music of Camillo DiSalle and the Prime Time band. The dinner and raffles proceeds will benefit the lodge’s veterans programs as well as the Honor Flight program. This program is currently flying WW II survivors to Washington D.C. to visit the war memorials built to honor them and everyone else who served in our
military to defend our c o u n t r y and way of life. On May 30th, Exalted Ruler Carl Byers accompanied b y other Lodge officers, visited local cemeteries a n d placed a wreath and said a prayer in memory of those we have lost in defense of our country, as well as loved ones who have proceeded us in death. Unfortunately, Bingo which has been held at the lodge every Tuesday for a number of years, is coming to an end. Declining public interest has prompted the Lodge to cease Bingo effective July 1st. Many of us at the Lodge will miss seeing our Tuesday night friends. We invite anyone interested in joining us in supporting our community to contact us. The evening begins at 7 p.m. at Dacono City Hall. Let’s talk safety, build a stronger community, and then enjoy a FREE movie in the park. National Night Out is an annual community-building campaign that promotes police-community partnerships and neighborhood camaraderie to make our neighborhoods safer, better places to live. The Dacono Police Department has a special evening designed to promote public safety and enhance community relations between our first responders and residents. Check out police cars, hands-on learning stations, and enjoy free refreshments. Mountain View Fire Protection District will also be there as they continue to serve the city of Dacono providing public safety and fire protection. They will have the Safety Bus there along with Fire Apparatus, Sparky the fire safety
dog with safety tips and free stuff. Back by popular demand, a FREE outdoor movie at Dave Osborne Park featuring the movie Zootopia. The movie begins at dusk. Pack a snack and enjoy an evening under the stars. What a great way meet your neighbors and strengthen neighborhood spirit. Carbon Valley Music & Spirits Festival: Dacono’s annual signature event, the Carbon Valley Music and Spirits Festival returns on Saturday, August 6th to Centennial Field– under the blue water tower. The festivities begin at 2 p.m. with the National Anthem followed by a day full of music, food, spirits, and fun! The music entertainment this year includes Cracker, the Railbenders, Kerry Pastine & the Crime Scene, Goatz, William’s Reserve, Mojo Academy kids and more. Kids will enjoy activities such as a magician and balloon artist, bungee trampoline, climbing wall and bounce houses. The spirits competition will feature some of the finest distilleries in Colorado. The day ends with the best fireworks display in Carbon Valley. As always admission and parking are free. As always, thank you for taking the time to read my report, like us on FaceBook and/or check out our website anytime for information. Take care, Mayor Joe Baker
a welcome improvement to the course. However, for those of you like me who feel more comfortable playing miniature golf, this new clubhouse and restaurant is a must see. The patio view is priceless and a perfect place to meet friends for a meal or a relaxing sunset beverage. A favorite summertime celebration is the day we celebrate our independence on July 4. Parades, music, games and day-long celebrations are tradition and that is no different here in Firestone. We invite you to join us for the 14th annual 4th at Firestone celebration that includes fun for the entire family throughout the day. We’ve got a fantastic parade lined up, great music, vendors, food, activities and of course a fantastic fireworks display to end the day. I invite you to check out our entire day’s activities online at www.firestoneco.gov/4thatFirestone. We’ve had incredible attendance at our Food & Flick Friday series this summer so far. If you haven’t been to one of these events, don’t miss them. There are many great food trucks to try, free games and activities, live music and a movie on the big screen. See the schedule online at www.firestoneco.gov/foodandflickfridays. Summertime is also the season for construction, as we only
have a small window to get it all done. I have had many people ask me about the road construction project on Firestone Boulevard just east of Home Depot. In recent years we have had several road closures in that area from water that flooded the roadway. The Town Board of Trustees made the decision to fix the problem by adding five box culverts to the Godding Hollow Ditch to handle the rainfalls that caused the road closures. The construction is nearly complete on the south side of the road and by early July traffic will shift to that new part while they complete the north side. The project is expected to be completed late this summer. I pray everyone stays safe this summer and enjoys our community events, trails and parks. Just a reminder that while you are driving around our neighborhoods, please slow down, keep your eyes on the road and off your cell phone. Let us make safety the highest priority this summer. As always, if you have a question, concern or an idea to make our community better please contact me via email at psorensen@ firestoneco.gov so we can discuss your concerns. Have a wonderful summer.
positive or negative. Here’s what’s trending in Frederick this month. I hope you will follow the lead of many of your neighbors and take the opportunity to come out to your Community BBQ Tour stop this summer. Our participation to this point has been higher than ever and we couldn’t be happier about that because we’ve been having some essential conversations with the great people that make up this community. Why do we believe in two-way communication with our residents so much? Not only because we are the people you chose to represent our collective interests for the place we call home so we need to know how well we are accomplishing that task and we take that very seriously, but also because we are your neighbors too and we enjoy getting to know you. I have met so many interesting people this year so far, it’s incredible. I sincerely hope you’ll join us when we’re at a park near you. As I was looking at our gorgeous view of the mountains
and enjoying a walk through the Frederick Market on its opening day at Crist Park, I was struck by how much this experience personifies Built on What Matters. This is what matters – a place to come and enjoy a conversation with your neighbors, listen to some music with your family under the shade trees that also offers the opportunity to support local farmers and crafters in the community and get some fantastic (and delicious) finds in the process. A great time to experience this for yourself will be July 7th at our Art Matters special event at the Frederick Market when we’ll be unveiling the latest edition to our Art in Public Places collection in style with wine tasting and other artful fun. As always, I am happy to come to your next group meeting, or schedule a one-on-one, if that’s of interest, just email me at tcarey@frederickco.gov.

However, many of the people walking the trails are not picking up after them nor are they leashed. There are dog droppings on the sidewalks and paths. Disgusting and unsanitary. The city provides dog stations and disposal bags for your convenience. Please use them.

Frederick Market is Fresh Every Thursday for Sixth Season Market vendors will be located in Crist Park this year
T
he Town of Frederick is proud to bring the Carbon Valley residents an outlet for locally produced food and goods for the sixth year in a row with The Frederick Market which begins tomorrow, Thursday June 2nd 4-8 p.m. The market will still run every Thursday June through September, but will have a new location this year: underneath the shade trees in Crist Park (105 5th St.). In June, July, and August, the market will run 4-8 p.m. and in September it will cut back to 4-7 p.m. to account for the earlier darkness that time of year. There will be live music at the market each week, showcasing local acoustic artists the same way local food and crafts are showcased. When the harvesting season begins in July, the Frederick Market will have more farmers than ever before with the addition of Farmer and Adele, Grateful Hearts Farm and Al’s Garden Box. But there are great new vendors to see at Opening Day including Haystack Mountain Goat Dairy and Iris Valley Farm along with your loyal, tried-and-true favorites Miller Farms, Wild Tree Naturals, AJ’s Roasted Chiles
and many more! For a complete list of vendors, go to www.frederickco.gov/ FrederickMarket. The Frederick Market will continue to offer special themed events throughout the season, each paired with a Downtown Sounds Concert in the Crist Park gazebo, a beer garden and food.

Find the Best Agent to Sell Your House
W
orking with the right real estate agent can mean the difference between getting prompt, expert representation and feeling like you’re going it alone when selling your home. Here are 9 questions to ask when you’re interviewing agents. 1. How long have you been selling homes? Mastering real estate requires onthe-job experience. The more experience agents have, the more likely they’ll be able to handle any curveballs thrown during your home sale. 2. Is this area your primary market? Agents who are familiar with your community will likely have many local connections and be familiar with schools and amenities for the area. 3. How many homes did you sell last year? Agents may tout their company’s success. An equally important question is how many homes they’ve personally sold in the past year; it’s an indicator of how active and aggressive they are. 4. How many days on average did it take you to sell homes? Ask agents to show you this data along with stats from their local Multiple Listing Service (MLS). 5. How close were the asking and sales prices of the homes you sold? Sometimes sellers choose their agent because the agent’s suggested listing price is higher than those suggested by other agents. A better factor is the difference between listing prices and the amount homes actually sold for. That can help you judge agents’ skill at accurately pricing homes and marketing to the right buyers. It can also help you weed out agents trying
to dazzle you with a lofty sales price just to get your listing. 6. How will you market my home? Look for an agent who provides you with a detailed marketing plan. That plan should include aggressive and innovative marketing, especially on the Internet. 7. How will you keep me informed? If you want weekly updates by email, don’t choose an agent who plans to contact you only if there’s an offer. 8. Can you provide references? Ask to talk to the agents’ past customers. Ask if they’d work with the agent again and if the agent did anything that didn’t sit well with them. 9. Are you a REALTOR®? Ask whether agents are REALTORS®, which means they’re members of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® (NAR). NAR has been an advocate of agent professionalism and a champion of homeownership rights for more than a century. Cindy Campbell with RE/MAX Alliance has been a REALTOR ® in the tri-town area for 10 years and a tritown resident for 18 years. She can be reached at 303-881-7413 or Cindy@ ColoradoWelcomeHome.com. merican Legion Post #1984 started a new tradition called “Celebrate Enlistment” this year. They’ve taken the opportunity to meet those who are enlisting into one of the branches of the military. Graduating seniors from area high schools who have made the decision to serve in the defense of our country were invited by The American Legion to dinner. The American Legion attendees shared a great time with the seniors and their guests while learning of their goals for the future and sharing some of their own past experiences. Because of the success and great time, next year’s celebration is already being planned. Those from this year’s celebration are invited to share their experiences with next year’s group. American Legion Post #1984 gives a big THANK YOU to Thomas Bartolillo (U.S. Army) and family, Ian Mac Neil (U.S. Army) and family, and Evan Prestwich (U.S. Navy) and family for excepting our invitation to dinner. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS.

Cimarron St.
lmost all Americans are familiar with this day in history, D-Day, the 6th of June, 1944. For most it is the date of the Allied invasion of Hitler’s Fortress Europe and the beginning of the end of World War II in Europe. To some others in the Tri-Town area in has a much different and yet related meaning. For the DiPaolo family of the TriTown area it is a reminder of the death of one of their family members, Samuel J DiPaolo. Samuel was a member of Company C, 16th Infantry Regiment, 1st Infantry Division. He paid the ultimate price on the beach at Normandy. Samuel is remembered both in Normandy, France at a memorial site and in the Ft. Lupton cemetery on a memorial stone. His final resting place is the Mountain View Cemetery in a family plot. Samuel J DiPaolo is also remembered as the namesake for the Firestone American Legion Post # 1985. His is the name of our post, is used on our Post challenge coin, and has a special place of honor within the Post. We welcome
all who visit our post to become more familiar with Sam DiPaolo through his place of honor. We are currently working to improve this area through the help of some of his family members. We recently received several items that included a copy of the his listing with the Normandy Memorial, a map of the invasion beaches at Normandy, and two newspaper articles that had been enlarged. All of these items are being framed and prepared for display along with a portrait of Samuel to be used in the new honor area. This will help us to continue to honor both a veteran and a hero of WW II as it should be. Samuel J DiPaolo American Legion Post 1985, 870 1st St, Firestone, 303-833-3878.

Americana: Patriotic Painting

mericana - art, antiques and other artifacts related to American culture, continues to be popular. And with Independence Day upon us we are further reminded of patriotic decorating, always a huge part of Americana. The American flag is probably the most used item in Americana and patriotic color schemes are very popular for interiors and exteriors. For an interior room the use of colors of our flag as a contrast of primary reds and blues is a bold look. For walls Behr’s National Anthem is a good blue to begin with, or Ben Moore’s Patriot Red, along with neutral colors to add for your backdrop

such as Behr’s Liberty Gray. If hanging a flag as artwork, our flag looks great against a neutral backdrop - consider Sherwin Williams Colony Buff if you are thinking beige, or Benjamin Moore’s Annapolis Gray Also check your major paint companies for inspiration. Many have historical collections containing colors based upon accurate colors from many different eras of American life. More timeless colors from Sherwin Williams: Dress Blues, a good looking blue, At Ease Soldier, a mid tone neutral from the green family, and Liberty Pewter. From Behr: Carriage Red - muted, yet strong, Star Spangled, another great blue, Americana, a lighter mid tone blue or Modern History for a neutral tan. From Ben Moore: Land of Liberty, a good mid tone neutral green, Patriotic White, a soft white with blue-green tendencies, or Patriot Blue, a bold blue.

Kinsco LLC Offers Quality Clothing to First Responders and the Public By Jan Sciacca
(This is Part Two in a Series called 119 Corridor . . .Farmland to Eclectic Development with Dyer Realty. Next month learn more about other unique businesses in our midst.) As traffic buzzes by Highway 119 and County Road 3 ½, there’s been a prominent building quietly being erected two blocks south in the Vista Commercial Center at 1456 Skyway Drive. That’s the new 23,500 sq. ft. building that is home to Kinsco and Code 3. The new building features a 4,000 square foot showroom, classrooms, training rooms and offices. Kinsco and Code 3 are currently located next door at 1530 Skyway Drive. Marvin Dyer of Dyer Realty, who the CVCR profiled last month, is ecstatic at the success that Kinsco has experienced at Vista
Commercial Center. Kinsco fields a sales rep that works Colorado and Wyoming but enjoys sales from all over the United States. Co-owner Greg Schumann shares that the company was founded in 2002 as a first responder uniform supplier. The founding partners believed they could provide a better quality uniform and service than what was then available to them. Kinsco LLC was born. He looks forward to celebrating the opening of the new showroom with a Grand Opening later this summer. The owners and staff have over 80 combined years of Law Enforcement, Fire, EMS and Animal Control Experience, Through the years, many products have been added, including the wellknown signature brand 5:11 Tactical, which is considered superior tactical
apparel and preferred by law enforcement, tactical operators and outdoor enthusiasts, Kinsco has the largest selection of 5.11’s Tactical merchandise in the State of Colorado. One year Kinsco was awarded 5.11 Dealer of the Year because of the volume of equipment they sell, how they embrace the 5.11 business model and how they are committed to the brand known for quality. The store and web site are open to the general public, with the majority of the items being quality clothing and items for the general public. There is a wide selection of pants, shirts, outerwear, boots and accessories. Kinsco reserves the right to restrict sales of certain products to emergency services professionals with proper identification.

n Monday, May 20th 2016, the Samuel Dipaolo American Legion Post #1985 in Firestone, Colorado held their annual Memorial Day Remembrance ceremony. This ceremony, which always begins promptly at 12:00 Noon, was attended by many veterans and their supporters in the area. The ceremony began with the American flag in front of the Post being

changed from half-staff to full staff. This requires that the flag first be lowered momentarily, and then raised to the top of the flag staff. Per flag etiquette for Memorial Day, the flag is only to remain at half-staff until noon, and then it is to be returned to full staff. Following the changing of the flag, there was a brief presentation on the meaning of Memorial Day, and what sets it apart from Armed Forces Day and Veterans Day. This also provided information on the history and significance of Memorial Day itself. Next came the setting of small American flags in the flower bed in front of the Legion Post. These flags were for those who have passed. Beginning with Sam Dipaolo for whom the Post is named, and continuing with all of the other Veterans that have been associated with the Legion, a small flag is placed for each veteran or Legionnaire who is associated with the Post. These individuals also include all members of the Legion Riders who, although frequently thought of as a separate group, are also full members of the Legion.
Following the Legion and the Legion Riders, the Sons of the American Legion read the names of those members who have passed. Flags were again placed in the flower bed for each name read. Although they were last, they are never least in the Legion. These are the Ladies Auxiliary. For the members of the Auxiliary, white roses are used rather than flags, and these are placed into vases. Here again it is the names of the members of the Ladies Auxiliary who have passed, many of whom have given great service to both the Legion and the community. Following the placing of the flags and the roses, Taps was played in remembrance of all who have passed in the service of our country. A closing prayer was then offered for the comfort of the living, and the safety of our brothers and sisters who are still serving our country. Following the ceremony, a lunch was provided by the Legion’s Ladies Auxiliary for any who wished to stay and mingle. Sam Dipaolo American Legion Post 1985 is located at: 870 1st St, Firestone , CO 80520, 303-833-3878.

200 Mead Football Players to Paint “Embrace-a-PLACE” Program you to the Downtown Revitalization Committee for kicking off the “Embrace-aTtrashhank PLACE” Program. Yesterday they policed Old Town Park and Main Street picking up Historic Highlandlake Church and other debris that made its way into the area. The downtown area as well as the By Pauli Driver Smith, President, Historic Highlandlake, Inc.
A
t noon on June 20, 2016, about 200 Mead High school football players, their coach and members of the athletic team are converging on a tiny historic community, called Highlandlake, just northwest of Mead, Colorado. Historic Highlandlake, Inc., the local historical society for the Highlandlake/Mead area owns a historic 1896 church building, that is unique in many ways, including the fact that it is almost 100% original to the day it was built. This includes furnishings and even the pictures on the walls. This is also the little church where some of the film, DieHard II starring Bruce Willis was filmed. The blizzard of March 2003 nearly toppled the building, but with the help of the State Historic Fund, we (Historic Highlandlake) were able to repair and restore our building to its former glory, including three of the original seven paint colors. We finished the restoration in 2008 and were awarded the Peter H Hart award for excellence in restoration. It is now time to repaint the exterior, but our coffers are too bare to afford the $10,000 plus that professional painters wanted. This is where the Mead High School football players come in. Their coach, Jason Klatt, visited the church last fall when his daughter’s 2nd grade class came to learn about local history. He immediately realized the need
for painting and contacted me asking if he and his students could help. The result is that all the football players at the Mead High school are spending several days helping to paint the church and the very old, two “holer” outhouse out back. Romero’s Quality Painting will supervise and paint the trim and do the necessary repairs and paint on the bell tower. The original paint, according to our architectural preservationist, John Fienberg (The Collaborative, Boulder, Colorado), was manufactured by Benjamin Moore. Because of this, Benjamin Moore is donating 8 gallons of paint, plus giving us a 30% discount on the rest. Other area businesses, including Colorado East Bank and Trust and Chiropractic Dimensions, are donating gift cards to purchase all the painting supplies needed, and Romeo is slashing the price of his portion of the painting to a fraction of what our other bids were. Total cost to us is around $4,500, including paint. We are so grateful to our community and especially Coach Klatt and his students for their willingness to help us paint our precious building. We also think that this would be a great feel good story illustrating how a community comes together to help preserve their past. If you are interested and/or have questions, please feel free to contact me.

A LETTER FROM MAYOR GARY SHIELDS Fresh Fun at the Farmer’s Market, Concerts & Golf! Dear Residents, I want to start by saying “Thank You” to all of our citizens that participated in the recent discussions of marijuana establishments within our town limits. As you may already know, at our regular meeting on June 13th, the town board voted to table the item indefinitely which has effectively kill the discussion at this time. It is not very often that we are able to meet with so many of you and to have these discussions and receive your input. I also appreciate the decorum that was exhibited by you all in the face of such a controversial subject. For me, the last 6 weeks of discussions with state and local officials who are also dealing with this subject has taught me that we are far too early in the process to know what
negative impacts this would have upon our community and without knowing that, it is too great of a risk to sacrifice the community values and standards that we have all worked so hard to preserve. With that being said, I want to bring a few items of local interest to your attention for the month of July. The Events Committee has put together a group of concerts this summer that has certainly raised the bar from past events. These concerts make up our Summer Concerts in the Park series and are free for everyone to enjoy. The July concert dates are the 7th and the 21st from 6-8pm. Along with the great music, there are also food vendors and a beer garden so grab the family after work and come on out and enjoy a great evening with family and friends in the town hall park. Back this summer by popular demand is the Mead Farmer’s Market which is brought to you by the Downtown Revitalization Committee. This
event will take place every Sunday from June 26th thru September 25th from 10 am to 1 pm and is sure to have something for everyone. I know that the committee has been hard at work lining up vendors for the market and there is sure to be something for every interest. Lastly this month is the 2nd Annual Mead Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament. This event will be held on July 29th at the Ute Creek Golf Course in Longmont with a shotgun start at 8 am. To learn more about this event and/or to sign up, please visit meadchambergolf.com or call 970-535-2108. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns @ 970-5354477. Sincerely, Gary R. Shields Mayor, Town of Mead, 970-535-4477

atherine French-Ewing of Hope into Light Counseling, LLC, is a faithbased counselor who loves being an instrument for the Lord’s great work. She sees incredible testimonies unfolding every day. Many of her clients seek her out for a form of spiritually based EMDR therapy she offers. EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing and is a well-researched brain-based integrative therapy that has proven effective for the treatment of trauma and other psychological stress. Katherine shares, “It may be a good fit for clients who have hit a wall with traditional talk therapy or who are carrying burdens from the past. It also may be a good direction for those who are trying to cope with difficult present circumstances or symptoms such as nightmares.” Katherine began counseling through her work with students at a local university, but it was through volunteering with Life Choices that she realized her calling. After completing her required practicum hours at Mountain States Children’s Home and then completing internship at an addictions treatment facility and Crossroads Counseling Associates, she was offered a position as a team member in Northglenn. Although Katherine has client testimonies, due to the confidential nature of her work, she cannot share them. She believes that any transformation that occurs in a client’s life and heart is due to our gracious God. Katherine cherishes memories of heart felt moments when clients thanked her for not giving up on them and for being a source of hope when it felt like they were treading water as the waves came crashing in. For CVCR readers, Katherine is offering a free in-person or phone consultation to ensure that she is a good fit for client needs. She adds, “One of the fulfilling things about being part of a team of compassionate professionals, is clients have a multitude of resources to draw from within the dynamic team.” I had heard about Katherine FrenchEwing before but recently had the privilege of meeting her. She was present, volunteering her time, at a recent trauma workshop in Longmont called “Living in the Moment . . . Surviving Trauma.” Katherine was there to support anyone at

Bringing Culture to Colorado
Opening
By Debbie Odom
T
raveling is a passion in our family. We love to be experience other cultures and show our children different parts of the world. With school and work schedules we can’t always go to all the places we would love to see. This past year we decided to let the culture and countries come to us. We made the decision to open up our home for 10 months and welcome an exchange student from Ukraine to come and live with us and experience life in America. The rewards have lasted a lot longer than a one week trip to another country. In the process of hosting our student we gained knowledge of a country. She increased culture awareness within her school and community through every person that she came into contact with. As a family we gained a lifelong relationship with her and look forward to the day when we can go and visit her. If you are looking for a way to impact your home and your community would you consider hosting a student for a school year or a semester? There are many students who are waiting to hear that they
have been selected to study in America. These students are leaders in their schools. They exhibit great academic skills as well as a heart for volunteer work. These are the students who will impact their countries when they return home with the experiences they have had while living here in America. Host families have the ability to pick the student that would best fit their family. Families receive support throughout the process by having a local coordinator there to help both the student and the family with the transitions. Host families are families with kids or without kids, retired, single, empty nesters, big house or little house. There is no “perfect” host family. All that is needed are people willing to open up their homes to impact their family and the life of a student. If you are interested in learning more about the program please contact me, Debbie Odom, at hostastudentAYA@ gmail.com or 303-532-6577. You can also visit www.academicyear.org.

dams Bank & Trust is a family owned & operated community bank with services ranging from consumer and business banking to financial management and estate planning. Todd S. Adams, CEO, and Chad S. Adams, President, serve as the 4th generation of Adams that have led the bank over the past 100 years. Their great-grandfather, G.D. Adams, co-founded the bank in Lemoyne, NE in 1916. In 1934, as the Kingsley Dam and Lake McConaughy projects were being developed, the bank was moved from Lemoyne to Brule, NE because it was apparent that the original town of Lemoyne would soon be under water. Following that move, the next generations of Adams began returning to the bank, paving the way for a legacy of family operation. Each generation brought new insights and advancement for the bank. It was shortly after the return of Mel Adams, Todd & Chad’s father, that the bank began expanding into new communities. By 1972 there were 5 banks total, with combined assets of $25 million. Once revised banking laws allowed for the merger of State banks, all five banks owned by the Adams family were merged under the common name Adams Bank & Trust (1986). As the bank grew, they established their corporate office in Ogallala, NE. Over the next several decades, the bank added more locations in an effort to bring adequate financial services to more communities in rural Nebraska. It was in December of 2000 that they opened their first facility in Colorado, located in the town of Berthoud. Even as the bank expanded further into northern Colorado with locations in Firestone, Fort Collins & Longmont, the values and community focus of their small town roots are carried on. Employees themselves are involved in many organizations throughout northern Colorado and the bank’s Firestone branch specifically supports organizations such as the Carbon Valley Chamber, American Cancer Society, VFW, American Legion, Carbon Valley Help Center, and Inspiring Talkers, to name a few. Today Adams Bank & Trust has 19 locations in Nebraska, Colorado & Kansas with assets of over $600 million and offers deposit, lending, investment and trust services. The bank will officially celebrate its 100th Anniversary on July 5, 2016.
Carbon Valley Over the Next Month or So Art Matters at the Farmer’s Market
In Frederick, we believe that Art Matters, which is why we’re having an event named just that at the Frederick Market on Thursday July 7th 4-8 p.m. at Crist Park (105 5th St.). The Frederick Arts Commission will be unveiling the latest addition to the Art in Public Places Program, a bronze sculpture depicting Frederick’s cultural heritage in the form of a young couple stomping grapes to make wine. This nod to our Italian roots will also be celebrated with a wine tasting featuring wine from some of the local families who still keep up the tradition of making their own wine. There will also be plenty for the little ones to enjoy including grape stomping throughout the entire event, and a sculpting session from 6 to 7 p.m. with the artist who created the new sculpture, Kathy Wardle. The official unveiling of the sculpture will take place at 7:00 p.m. A beer/wine garden and food will also be part of the celebration along with The Johnny O Band playing blues and funk in the gazebo.

303-718-1103 New Firestone Restaurant is a Community Gem By Jan Sciacca
O
ne doesn’t have to go far to reach Carbon Valley’s newest restaurant called The Tavern Restaurant at Saddleback Golf Course. The Tavern Restaurant at Saddleback Golf Course, 8631 Frontier Street, Firestone, is centrally located and is open to the public for lunch and dinner. From Colorado Boulevard and Pine Cone, it only takes a couple of minutes to arrive at this marvelous setting with majestic views. For newcomers to the area and non-golfers like me, from the Colorado Boulevard intersection, drive east on Pine Cone for one mile and then turn right on Frontier and you’ll see The Tavern Restaurant on the right. Lunch is served at 11am, with dinner being offered at 4pm and continuing until closing at 9pm, Sunday-Wednesday and 10pm, Thursday-Saturday. The tavern seats 100 and the terrace accommodates 100 for outdoor dining. The menu offering is refreshing and like non-other in the tri-town area. Kudos are in order for Chef Scott Kennedy. The lunch offerings consists of a variety of
sandwiches, salads and yummy appetizers. A few dinner entrees consist of grilled salmon, roasted chicken, seared sesame tuna salad, vegetarian Gnocchi, Ribeye steak and Filet Mignon. Several varieties of pizza, mussels, sausagefest and chicken wings adorn the appetizer menu. I recently talked to Saddleback Marketing Director Robbie Finley about his favorites. Without hesitating, he declared the “Saddleback Burger and Truffle Fries for lunch are a ‘must’ and the Ribeye and Filet Mignon for dinner are excellent.” Robbie explains that his favorite Truffle fries are thin and finished with truffle oil and ground Padano cheese, Italian parsley and come with a rosemary garlic dipping sauce. The Saddleback burger consists of a whole Poblano pepper stuffed with cheddar and bacon, served on a Meyer Ranch all-natural burger and topped with tobacco onion. The Tavern Restaurant at Saddleback Golf Course offers a complete bar with a large selection of beers, both local and national.

he concept of Grace is a powerful concept. We see the word grace all over Scripture in the New Testament. The word grace is used over 280 times in the Bible. There are many great definitions of the word grace. Such as, “God’s Riches at Christ Expense.” Or “unmerited favor of God.” These are great! My favorite actually comes from 2 Corinthians 12. 2 Corinthians 12:9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.” You may not see it up front but let me walk you through it. God’s Word says here that His power is made perfect in My Weakness. What is the opposite of weakness? Strength! My definition of Grace is simple. It is strength! When you see God’s grace, you see His strength. It is all over Scripture! To give you a few examples of how the words grace and strength are interchangeable in Scripture. Ephesians 2:8-9 For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. James 4:6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud, but gives grace to the humble.” 1 Corinthians 15:10 But by the grace of God I am what I am, and his grace toward

Help “Paint the Carbon Valley Purple” in Celebration of Relay For Life
I
n celebration of the Relay for Life of Carbon Valley, the local event committee along with the American Cancer Society is asking local businesses and residents to help “Paint the Carbon Valley Purple” the week of July 5 to 10, 2016. This is an opportunity for community members and businesses in Firestone, Frederick and Dacono to show support for this signature fundraising event to end cancer. As part of the “Paint the Carbon Valley Purple” effort, the event committee is seeking area groups, churches, businesses and community members to form teams for the Relay for Life of Carbon Valley, which is celebrating its 12th annual event on July 9 and 10 at Hart Park, 467 Jackson Ave., in Firestone. The Silent Auction event will take place June 25 at Centennial Park in Frederick in conjunction with the Frederick in Flight event. This is an opportunity to join local volunteers and participants from the community and celebrate cancer survivors, remember those lost to the disease, and take action to save more lives from cancer. Additionally, businesses and residents can show their support in the fight against cancer by ordering a purple bow to place on their property. The bows are available for a suggested donation of $10 and all proceeds will benefit the work of the American Cancer to save lives from cancer
These are just a few of the verses in Scripture! But as you can see, the words grace and strength are definitely interchangeable. It also helps to realize how great God is with what He does for us. God’s strength (grace) is what: Saves Us Guides Us Provides for Us This is beautiful when it comes to Salvation. Salvation, as Ephesians 2:8-9 tells us that it is solely by God’s strength that we are saved. It is not by our strength. That would give us a reason to boast and be arrogant about the things that we have accomplished. Again in 2 Corinthians 12:9, God’s Word teaches us that is His strength that perfects us! That is why we can rest on Him for all of our inferiorities! God’s grace is sufficient! We do not have to stress out daily about life’s struggles! Why? God’s strength is what provides! Has it ever occurred to you that nothing has ever occurred to God? Simply said, we do not have to be depressed because God’s grace is sufficient in our lives! Next time you get discouraged, remember God’s strength IS sufficient.

by helping people stay well and get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back. Businesses and community members can also show their support for the “Paint the Carbon Valley Purple” effort by wrapping light poles in purple ribbon, tying purple ribbons around trees, flying a purple flag, decorating with purple balloons, creating a store window display and even replacing their porch light with a purple bulb. The Relay for Life of Carbon Valley event is open to anyone who would like to join for an hour or the entire event. The opening ceremony, which includes a special Survivors and Caregivers Lap, will begin at 5 p.m. A Luminaria Ceremony to honor cancer survivors and remember those lost to cancer will take place at 9 p.m. The closing ceremony will be at 7 a.m. on the morning of July 10. The Carbon Valley Relay for Life event is similar to others around the world, but the community certainly likes to put its own stamp on it. Teams camp out overnight to take turns walking around the track or path to show that cancer never ends. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all time, while entertainment, music, fundraising and activities keep things lively. Each year the Relay for Life of Carbon Valley has continued to grow in its fundraising efforts, raising more than $105,000 last year alone. For more information on Relay For Life or to order your purple bow, please contact Community Manager Brittany McGarry at 720-524-5428 or brittany. mcgarry@cancer.org, or a local Relay for Life committee member. Cupping
C
upping is a method of treatment that has been used by the Chinese people for thousands of years. A cup made of plastic, glass, bamboo, or the earliest known device being an animal horn, is attached to the skin using negative pressure to create local congestion. The placement of suction cups upon the skin brings blood to the surface, thereby encouraging the movement of blood. In this article I will explain it’s wide and varying therapeutic advantages. There are many appropriate uses for cupping. It is often used to help relieve tight muscle following injury, repetative stress and emotional stress. The most common uses are for acute or chronic back, shoulder and neck pain. It is also used for gastrointestinal upset such as stomach upset, vomiting, diarrhea and constipation. Cupping is also a very effective method of treatment for respiratory congestion as it provides a mild detoxification and encourages the proper movement of fluids. For example, cupping assists in recovery from conditions
such as cold, flu, asthma, brochitis and pneumonia. Cupping is safe for people of all ages. Infants and young children generally respond very quickly. For example, when my sons were little I would do cupping on their back at the onset of an illness such as a cold or flu. After cupping, they would generate a fever, (which helps to rid the system of the virus) fall asleep, and wake up on their way to recovery. With more serious conditions involving a cough or bronchitis, a combination of treatment is used, and I follow up with another round of cupping after the bruises have faded. As we age, healing generally takes longer and a combination of therapeutic techniques such as acupuncture and moxibustion are used. The Heart of Jo Ann’s Kitchen Go Fish!
I
was raised in the heart of Texas cattle, sheep and goat country. Landlocked, except for the river and sundry lakes around, the only fish I knew were freshwater, or they came from a can or were frozen; mostly, “fish” were unrecognizable pressed substances on a school cafeteria tray. There was a reason my beautiful mother lovingly made most of my lunches! No pressed and formed fish for me! Eating fish has evolved in my life. I still eat the mildest of ocean fish, and am always searching for another I can eat with gladness in my heart. Swordfish was not something I expected to like, but when I had it grilled, it was reminiscent of a steak, and that was a great introduction. If you have not had swordfish, purchase only the freshest “frozen” fillet you can find, harvested and raised sustainably. You will be glad you did. And if you love a fruity Asian twist, this steaklike fish stands up well to the flavors in the following recipe.
Broiled Swordfish w/ Marmalade Ginger Glaze Ingredients:
• 1/3 cup olive oil • Fresh parsley, handful, chopped fine • Optional: fresh orange or lemon slices to garnish

Why Am I Hitting A Plateau?
P
lateaus are misunderstood and difficult to fix if you don’t know the cause of the problem. The cause of a plateau usually comes down to one thing, you were in a calorie deficit before, but you’ve lost your calorie deficit. Four main reasons you lose your calorie deficit and hit a plateau are: • Because your metabolism will eventually decrease while dieting and losing weight. If you’ve been cutting calories, your body adapts by decreasing the metabolic rate. • You need fewer calories after you’ve lost weight. Calorie needs are directly tied into your body weight. • When you’ve already lost a lot of weight and move a smaller body, you’re not burning as many calories. The more weight you carry, the more work your body does and you burn more calories. • Most people don’t stick to their nutrition plan and they forget to record part of their food intake. We’re not very good at estimating how much food we eat when we try to guess. The leaner you get, the more aggressively you cut calories, and the longer you’ve been dieting, the more your body tends to hold on to the remaining body fat. As you’re losing weight, it can be tempting to cut calories too low to shed pounds faster. The down side to cutting your calories too low is your muscle can
Directions:
• Brush swordfish steaks with tamari sauce and sesame oil on both sides and let stand while you prepare the rest of the ingredients. • Bring to a boil orange juice, lemon juice, marmalade, and ginger in a small saucepan until reduced by about 1/3 (approximately 1 cup of liquid when finished), stirring occasionally approximately 6 minutes. • Cool slightly and whisk in vegetable oil • Preheat oven broiler, lowest broiler setting. Arrange swordfish steaks in a foillined broiler pan. • Brush with half of the glaze; cook for 3-4 minutes. Turn and brush with the rest of the glaze. • Cook another 4-5 minutes. Fish is done when firm and you can flake it with a fork. • Transfer to plates and garnish with freshly chopped parsley and orange or lemon slices, if desired. • Recipe is easily halved for a couple or doubled for a crowd.
• 4 - 8 oz. swordfish steaks (approx. 1 1/2 inches thick), thawed completely • Low Sodium tamari or soy sauce, enough to coat • Sesame oil, enough to coat • Freshly cracked black pepper • 4 Tbsp. low sugar or naturally sweetened orange marmalade • 4 tsp. minced fresh ginger • 3/4 cup strained fresh orange juice • 3/4 cup strained fresh lemon juice

That Church Behind the Middle School…
H
ave you heard of it – Destiny Church! It is one of Fort Lupton and South Weld County’s longer established churches, but it sure has a new vibe and a whole ton of energy going on! Destiny Church is the only church affiliated with the Charismatic/Pentecostal Assemblies of God in all of the Tri-town, Fort Lupton, Hudson, Platteville region – and it is drawing people from all of these areas as well as Brighton, Thornton and beyond.
What most people don’t realize is that almost a year ago a new pastor came to Destiny and since then much has changed. Rob Rocca (above with family), the new pastor, has a depth of experience in pastoring churches up to 600 in size, and although he has a Masters degree in Theology he prefers to be down to earth and meet people where they are at. One of the things that Rob loves about Destiny is the church’s willingness
to embrace new means of doing church. The church now has a more nondenominational feel, relevant messages with an appeal to men and young families, and yet they still offer real depth from God’s Word without being judgmental. The worship is contemporary, but unplugged, and really allows for congregational involvement in this intimate setting. Destiny has been growing and reaching young families while maintaining a broad appeal to all ages. It is also one of the area’s most multi-cultural churches truly representing the landscape of those who live in the region and not just one cultural group. There is a sister church that uses their building on Sunday evenings and other nights of the week that is primarily for Spanish speaking people, but Destiny is an English speaking congregation filled with a variety of backgrounds. The church offers great ministries for families, children, youth and small groups for both connecting and getting deeper knowledge of the Bible and its application to life. They are also in the midst of a current renovation bringing fresh updates and friendly spaces like their kids area and nursery, and Sunday AM coffee and donut bar. In addition, for a non “mega” church they have a great online presence (www. yourdestinychurch.org), a church app, online giving, facebook page, and soon they will be livestreaming services on Sunday mornings. Although these are all great things, the best part of Destiny is the warm and friendly people that greet and connect with you once you arrive there. You will not feel alone and will be quickly welcomed in
when you come to visit. The dress is casual with Pastor Rob preaching in a pair of jeans, and all are welcome to come as you are – no pretenses here. Recently Destiny offered a big event at Easter time called Easterfest where around 400 people from the region came to enjoy bounce houses, a petting zoo, the Easter bunny, face painting and a whole lot of fun. Currently the church is getting ready for their first Vacation Bible School in over
Local Christie’s Design/Build Remodeling Expands with Firestone Showroom

C
hristie’s Complete Services, Inc., a local family-owned business that specializes in design and build remodeling, has opened a new showroom. Christie’s, located at 8350 Colorado Blvd, #120, Firestone, can remodel a kitchen or bath into one like in your dreams, finish the basement you’ve wanted to complete or tackle whole house remodeling. They also help business owners who want to upgrade current space or need tenant finishing. As the “boomers” age, Christie’s is prepared to help them with Aging-inPlace, which is remodeling so that one can stay in the home longer with the benefit of walk-in showers, widening of doors, nonslip flooring, etc. Steve and Diane started Christie’s in 2000 when it became apparent that Steve’s employer Rocky Flats would be closing. As the years progressed, the focus moved from handyman services to design and build services for residential remodeling. Recently the Wellborn cabinet line was added to their offering. The new showroom displays six different lines of cabinets, from the builder grade to the Estate Collection for custom cabinets. They have hundreds of styles and finishes for any cabinet. Self-installation is available or if a contractor is being used, contractor pricing is offered. Additionally, Christie’s offers the Onyx collection for bathroom remodeling projects. The Onyx Collection manufactures all types of bathroom components to one’s specifications in almost any size, shape, and color. Steve and Diane raised their 2 children, Miranda and Alyssa, in Firestone
where they both graduated from Frederick High School. Alyssa completed her degree in interior design and then joined her parents in the company. She can help with all design needs, including 3D imaging and personal shopping assistance to make your dream into reality. Christie’s takes pride in offering their clients best value. They know what it takes to complete projects within one’s budget and without change orders. Their design agreement enables them to work closely with their clients to insure the desired products are received while staying within the client’s budget before a final contract is signed. Margaret Hill of Brighton comments, “Christie’s work ethic and attention to detail far exceed my expectation . . .all the horror stories I have heard from friends made me feel like that was just a “norm”. I never once had a feeling of anything going “south” or neglected.” In addition to Steve, Diane and Alyssa, Jerry McBride, Shaun Taylor and Charlene Bargas complete the team. The company serves the entire Front Range. The Christies love the Carbon Valley Community and love seeing clients’ excitement when a project is complete and a dream is turned into reality. Tell Christie’s you read about them in the CVCR and they will give you 30% off the retail purchase of any cabinets or Onyx collection shower. Christie’s Design/Build Remodeling is open Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. and can be reached at 303.833.4715. Its website is christiescompleteservices. com and the company is on Facebook.

Town Board Announces Resignation of Town Manager Wesley LaVanchy
T
he Firestone Town Board today announced that Firestone Town Manager Wesley LaVanchy is resigning effective June 17, 2016 after serving seven years as the Town’s top administrator. “Wes has led by example during his tenure with Firestone. The Town’s accomplishments and our great staff are a reflection of Wes’s values and leadership. We have been blessed to have Wes as our Town Manager leading our team of dedicated and highly skilled public servants,” said Firestone Mayor Paul Sorensen. “Wes always placed Firestone’s interests first and constantly asked the question of what was best for Firestone. I will personally miss my frequent contact with Wes and his balanced and proactive approach to leading the Town,” Mayor Sorensen added of Mr. LaVanchy’s service to the Town. Mayor Sorensen stated the resignation was arrived at mutually and not the result of any specific disputes. Mr. LaVanchy’s tenure as Town Manager spanned a period of rapid growth and expansion, during which the Town was consistently rated one of the best small towns in which to live, as well as one of the best communities for home values and one of the safest small towns in the state and nation. Board members acknowledged several noteworthy accomplishments under Wes’s leadership, including the Town’s Streets and Parks Sustainability Initiative; the successful annexation of the Barefoot Lakes Master Planned Community; the implementation of urban renewal efforts for three plans areas within the Town, and nine straight years of
receipt of the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting by the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) of the United States. Board members also commended Wes’s leadership in managing the Town’s 2013 flood emergency response, overseeing the development of the Town’s organizational structure and capacity, and furthering the Town’s position as a recognized leader in local, regional and statewide engagement with its public entity partners. “Wes’s service to the Town has from day one been exemplified by proactive engagement and problem-solving. His leadership, as well as his significant experience and familiarity with the Town, will be missed,” Mayor Sorensen said. Previous to serving as Town Manager, Mr. LaVanchy served the Town as Director of Operations and Finance Director. During his tenure, he also represented the Town on a variety of board and committees, including the Colorado City & County Mangers Association Board of Directors, Metro North Chamber Board of Directors, National League of Cities – Community and Economic Development Committee, UpState Colorado Economic Development Board of Directors, and Colorado Municipal League – Policy Committee. Wesley plans to take some time away to spend with family and then move forward with other career opportunities and development. Mayor Sorensen Stated the Town Board would at future meetings discuss the process for recruitment of a successor to Mr. LaVanchy.

Health Care Medical Sharing Companies Offer Savings and Comply with the Affordable Care Act By Jan Sciacca (Part 2 of a two article series on how to lower health care costs. In the June CVCR we ran an article on Nextera Healthcare and its health model that helps one lower health care costs.) efore I launch into the savings offered by faith-based medical sharing companies, please note that not all folks are eligible for such a plan. A health questionnaire is required and there may be limits on pre-existing conditions. The companies advertise that exclusions occur in rare cases. In addition, the lifestyle of the interested enrollee may not be conducive to the beliefs and practices of a faith-based medical sharing company. For these folks, I suggest you get more than one quote from local insurance agents or an insurance broker, who handles many companies. But, if you’re a Christian, many blessings may be waiting for you via such a company.

I met with Dr. Clint Flanagan recently after being frustrated and disappointed with my traditional insurance plan that was in compliance with the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare. Like most people, I wanted to know how I can have a program that would cover me in the way I hoped, at an affordable price and one that was in compliance with Obamacare. I had heard of faith-based medical sharing before but didn’t realize they companies are exempt from the ACA. One can confirm this information in Section 1501 of the Affordable Care Act, page 148. Liberty Direct is the plan that I opted for, along with Nextera, a direct primary care membership program plan founded by Dr. Flanagan. As an individual over 30, Liberty Direct costs me $199 per month and lowers my out-of-pocket expense on any eligible medical incident to $500*

instead of the $6850 I had previously. Respective out-of-pocket expenses for couples is $1000 and $1500 for families. (The asterisk represents Liberty Direct’s guidelines that are available online at libertydirect.org but are too lengthy to include here.) This means that 100% of my eligible medical bills up to $1,000,000 per incident will be covered, after my annual out-of-pocket expense of $500. After a representative called to go over my questionnaire, I paid an initial $135 membership fee, which renews at $75 per year. I finally feel that I have a plan that protects me for catastrophic situations, one that I can afford on a monthly basis and also one where my deductible is reasonable. Also since Dr. Flanagan of Nextera is partnered as a physician with Liberty Direct, my monthly Nextera primary care membership program is discounted $60 to only $39 per month. Similar savings may apply depending on your family structure. If you feel faith-based medical sharing is an option for you, make sure you do your homework. Most companies, but not all, allow you to use your own doctor. Also, most companies offer automated sharing to those in need but some require the participating member to determine where
their shared funds should go. Liberty Direct, in the monthly sharing total, all provides discounts for prescriptions, chiropractic, dental, hearing and vision. While dental, vision and hearing service costs are not ordinarily eligible for sharing by the members, one can access those services at a significant discount. For those who missed the direct primary care membership program article in the June CVCR, you may view it at http:// issuu.com/consumerreport. In that article, Dr. Flanagan offers to waive the setup fee of $29 per person for anyone who joins Nextera Healthcare by July 31 when the CVCR is mentioned. Contact information for Nextera Healthcare is 303.501.2600, nexterahealthcare.com.

Patrick Bauer
Patrick Bauer, age 75, died peacefully, of heart failure, at home on May 30th. Pat was a giver. He would help out who ever needed it, and with this attitude he was a perfect fit to work at the local food banks. Until his health prevented him, he would give blood often due to the fact that his blood type was desperately needed to help children. He started his adult life by enlisting in the army and working on some of the first computers while he was stationed in Germany. This created a lifelong love in computers and Ham radios. Through his life he was a master baker, member of the ski patrol, restaurant owner, private investigator, and business consultant. He liked helping people so much that he used his career to put him in the position to help as many people as he could. Pat is survived by his wife, two daughters, and his brothers; Bob, Lee, Jim, and Ed. Pat requested that there be no special service. Pat was a great family man and a friend to everyone who knew him and his family asks those of you who knew him to either donate blood or donate to your local food bank.

“HELPING YOU CELEBRATE LIFE” “It’s every parent’s nightmare to bury a child,” Evesham Mayor Randy Brown said. “You can shed tears because she is gone or smile because she lived. . . (so) do what she would want: smile, open your eyes, love and live on.” Regarding the murder of Christina Grimmie 22, on June 11. The vigil was held not to mourn her death but to celebrate her life.
