From Drab to Fab with Amber at the Green Pear Salon By Kelly Fordyce Martindale

t would be easy to push the fabulous talent of Amber Losasso at the Green Pear Salon in Frederick. But I’d like to start by first sharing a story. Why? Because it shows her heart and I think that is the most important part of any human being, especially one that provides a service to our communities. “A family came into the chain salon where I was working. The mom was quite thin and wearing a hat. She, with her husband, son and daughter, approached my chair, all with very sad eyes. I welcomed them and ask how I could help. Through tearful eyes, as mom pulled off her hat, she asked, ‘Can you help me?’ Sorrow and compassion filled me as I viewed her mostly bald head with chunks of matted hair still attached to her scalp. ‘I just got out of treatment. I have terminal cancer. I just want this off my head,’ she tells me and then covers her eyes and cries. ‘Please do your best to make me look as good as

you can,’ she pleaded with tears streaming down her face. She tried to put on a brave smile. As I cut her hair, I asked her if the hospital actually let her leave with her hair the way it was. She replied with a cold ‘yep,’ while I continued my work. I was in shock and my heart hurt for her and then I was mad. It was at that moment I was inspired to do something. I wanted to make a difference in her life and the lives of others in the same situation. When I finished, she thanked me. We hugged. I said, ‘No charge.’ I’ve never seen her again, but I pledged to help those with cancer by going to their home and cutting their hair for free. It’s something I can do to make someone else’s life a bit easier—in the name of Carol. Coming from a beautician background, Amber spent a lot of time in her aunt’s salon in Wheat Ridge. Both her mother and aunt were hair stylists. Those women taught her at a

young age, Anyone who walks through your salon door should feel and look amazing when they walk out your door! Amber is in her eleventh year serving others in the beauty industry. She thought about working in her aunt’s salon but decided she wanted her own business. She has her booth space at Green Pear salon at 142 6th Street, Unit 6, in Frederick right off Colorado Blvd at the roundabout. Client’s come from Arvada, Thornton, Ft. Lupton, and Longmont to receive her expertise and styling services. Ambers clients are both men and women, all ages and all are welcome. You will be impressed. Amber says, “I work with two other hair stylists, Patti Johnson, and Concha Aquirre, the Green Pear salon owner. We also have a fabulous nail designer, McKenna Mae Orozco.”

“I specialize in hair color, cuts and styles. My clients tell me I take them from drab to fab, as if they are ready for Hollywood,” she shares. “I am a kind person,” Amber says. “I’m a very passionate wife, mother and hair designer.” She is married with two amazing kids. “We are a musical and artistic family,” she shares. Outside of doing hair, she works on song writing, making music and supporting other local musicians. Peace Cross Love Cross

n June 20, 2019 the Supreme Court ruled that a Maryland World War I memorial “in the shape of” a forty-foot-tall cross can continue to stand on public land. It was erected, in 1925, as a monument to the area residents who died in WWI. Folks, that’s ninety-four years ago. Nearly one hundred years of honoring those who perished in WWI. Memorials really don’t mean much to those who had no investment in the life or lives that were lost. I suppose that is why it was so easy to tear down the structures that were removed in the past several years. The destruction even touched the Carbon Valley. Firestone had a situation involving a memorial placed after the death of a resident’s son. It eventually, as with the WWI monument, worked out, but it was heart wrenching. Monuments pay tribute to people, sometimes to not-so-good people, but mostly to good people who are loved and missed. As passerby’s, it wouldn’t hurt us to stop and consider those left behind, who

may continue to struggle with grief and unanswered questions. The monuments to those who did terrible things are disturbing, but those things are a part of our history. Instead of tearing down the structure, perhaps, we need to leave it and teach our children and grandchildren the truth about that person or what the monument stands for. We need to make sure the atrocity doesn’t happen in the future. Justice Samual Alito wrote this about the monument, “For some, that monument is a symbolic resting place for ancestors who never returned home. For others, it is a place for the community to gather and honor all veterans and their sacrifices to our Nation. For others still, it is a historical landmark. For many of these people, destroying or defacing the Cross that has stood undisturbed for nearly a century would not be neutral and would not further the ideals of respect and tolerance embodied in the First Amendment. For all these reasons, the Cross does not offend the Constitution,” he wrote.

In our society, that outwardly fights for tolerance, America is more intolerant than I’ve ever known. My eighty-one-yearold dad might agree. There is incredible persecution against so many peoples. I won’t list because many might be offended. Alito is correct. The “shape of the cross” has a different meaning to each individual. A preschooler might see it, simply, as the letter T. Others hate it because of religious associations. Maryland oﬃcials had argued that the cross, sometimes called the “Peace Cross,” doesn’t violate the Constitution because it has a secular purpose and meaning. The Cross, to me, is a sign of love. Deep, all-encompassing love. I don’t see crosses that often, but I think of The Cross a lot. Each time I am filled with peace. The Cross is not a religious symbol to me, nor do I consider myself “religious.” I don’t have any rituals that are daily or weekly habits. I don’t shun others or avoid activities or specific foods on certain days.

Perhaps the presence of questionable monuments will encourage our youth, our future generations, to become critical thinkers. Don’t we want them to understand the depravity of mankind and change history? If I saw a monument to Hitler, I wouldn’t be in awe. Just thinking about it, my heart races as I think of the horrors committed back then as well as those happening today. I want to be a part of the change. Removing the structure hides the truth.

Outdoor Paint Projects

eep in mind that while your home exterior is painted, your outdoor furniture and accessories can be painted as well. As with any painting project, preparation is key and there is a proper method of preparation for each type of surface to be painted. Metal light fixtures, including brass can be updated to white, bronze, black, or matched to an accent such as your door color. The fixtures will need to be sanded and primed before painting with a good exterior paint. There are also great spray primers and paints available for outdoor use. The same applies to metal patio furniture. It can be matched to the body or trim color, or for contrast choose a color on a wheel that are opposite your house colors. The pieces will need to be at least sanded or the paint may need to be completely removed. Next prime with a quality exterior primer, then paint with a top grade product specifically for painting outdoor furniture. Most woods do well if properly prepped and primed as long as the final coats - we always recommend two - are with paint intended for outdoor use. Teak furniture will fare better if oiled rather than painted due to the constant seepage of the natural oils within the wood. Redwood does well with a semi-transparent stain but expect to apply it every year or two, depending upon the weather. Wicker and rattan furniture can benefit from priming and painting for protection from the elements. Plastic furniture should be painted with paint designed specifically for plastic to ensure the best bond. What else can your painter spruce up? Pots, planters, wrought iron yard ornaments, fiberglass gnomes, etc. Yard tools giving you splinters? A quick sanding and a coat of varnish on the handles is a fast remedy!

emorial Day is about honoring the sacrifices of our uniformed men and women who’ve died in service to out country protecting our freedoms. For years a few volunteers have made an effort to have a Memorial Day service on hallowed grounds at the Erie Cemetery. This year the volunteers were told by the Town of Erie Board of Trustees and Administration staff that they would need a permit at the cost of $250.00 before they could have this annual 30 minute Memorial Day Ceremony. When did greed take over the true meaning of Memorial Day? This year with no advertising because it requires a permit we had a low turnout at our “unauthorized” service. However, the few who knew gathered as the Erie Boy Scouts lowered the flag to half mast and read the list of names of the military Americans that died in WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq and Afghanistan who are buried in our cemetery. A volunteer gave a short speech and led a prayer. Amen. Instead of a day of memory and tears the controlling Town of Erie Administration has once again placed a dollar value and other burdens on the honor, the sacrifice, service and dignity on the true meaning of Memorial Day. The Naturalization Ceremony was held on May 23 at the Boulder Public Library. Representing 21 countries, these newest citizens’ hard work, perseverance, and patriotic dedication were applauded and cheered by family and friends. Carbon Valley Chapter of NSDAR was honored to present all the new citizens with an American flag.

 2019 Mosquito Control: The Town of Firestone’s Public Works Department will provide the Town’s mosquito surveillance and control activities for the 2019 season. Mosquito traps are set in strategic locations throughout Town to determine mosquito type and population. Based on this information, Town staff will spray adulticides and

 Projects in Town – The Planning & Zoning Department continue to receive applications for both residential and commercial projects. The department Colleen Whitlow is responsible for reviewing all land use development applications from annexations through ﬁnal plat. Planning staff regularly update the online list of active land use applications. The Active Land Use Applications webpage not only includes the name of the projects, but also a description of each project and its location within Mead. Maps, for both commercial and residential development, are also accessible for residents. Board members discussed the community survey results compiled by Magellan Strategies, amended height standards for lighting, and approved the rate study for the wastewater utility services.  Summer Lunch Program - The City of Dacono has partnered with the Weld Food Bank and New Horizons Christian Church to provide a location where lunch Joe Baker will be served to children 18 and younger. Lunches will be served Monday through Friday 12:00 p.m.-1:00 p.m. underneath the pavilion at Clem Dufour Park. The program concludes August 2. During 2017-2018, 43,384 combined breakfast and lunches were served. Please contact the

The Town generally sprays between 8:30 - 10:00 p.m. on Mondays and Thursdays (weather permitting) at the height of mosquito activity, in order to eliminate a larger population of mosquitos. In 2019, weekly Mosquito spraying will begin on Thursday, June 13. Intergovernmental Agreement between the Town of Mead and Mountain View Fire Rescue District for fire and emergency medical services. The 2018 International Building Code was also adopted. The Board held three public hearings and approved The Highlands Preliminary Plat, Raterink Annexation and Zoning, and the Red Barn Preliminary Plat and PUD. We also approved many administrative items and adopted a NEW LOGO for the Town of Mead. Town staff will begin implementing the new logo over the next few months and into 2020. The town-wide garage sale was held on June 29, with approximately 20 participating households across town.  Community – Upcoming Events  The annual Bike Parade is Thursday, July 4. Bike decorating begins at 10 a.m., and the parade starts at 10:30 a.m. Decorating and the parade happen at, and near, Town Hall. Food for the Soul: God’s Superorganism—The Church

few years ago I set out on my dream of becoming a beekeeper. I remember that windy day when a package of 3,000 bees arrived. I was terrified as I opened the package and began shaking the bees out of their container and into the hive box. Over time my fear waned and was replaced by sheer awe. I marveled at how they built their wax comb, how the queen laid thousands of eggs each day, and how they all, every single of them, worked together for the survival of the whole. A colony of bees is called a superorganism – an organized society that functions as an organic whole. Each individual bee lives and works as an individual that contributes to the life of the whole colony. The queen bee sends chemical signals leading and directing the colony in ways that she sees fit. The colony cannot exist without the individual members doing their part.

In a similar manner, the church, is also a superorganism. Members of the body (i.e. the church) work together in cooperation following the signals and commands of its head, Jesus Christ. Paul teaches about this unique nature of the church in 1 Corinthians 12:12-27. Verse 12 proclaims, “For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ.” In this text Paul is not comparing the church to a bee colony, his illustrative comparison is that of a man. But it’s a spiritual picture of Christ, so what you need to see in the image is a spiritual man made up of two parts. The first part is a head, this represents Christ. The second part of the illustration is a body, this represents the church. Further down in the text we read this in verse 27, “Now you are the body of Christ and individually

members of it.” The church is the body and Christ is its head, this is the spiritual illustration Paul is depicting to help the Corinthians understand the value and worth of each member of the body. So many lessons can be brought out from this text, not least of which is how the body is submissive to the head, but we are focusing on the incredibly collaborative nature of the church. Do you see how arrogant and condescending attitudes have no place? Do you understand that seemingly lesser parts are vital to the health and success of the whole? This is why the New Testament is so full of verses instructing Christians on how to treat one another. When Christians genuinely love and serve one another, sacrifice for one another, forgive one another, work for unity with one another, and bear burdens together, all of this shows that we are living as the collaborative “organism”

that God designed the church to be. Just as each bee has an individual role to perform in the colony, each Christian has an important function in the body of Christ. And just as the bee colony can flourish or fail based on the working of the individual bees, so the church can thrive or suffer due to individual Christians. When I work my bees and see how they seamlessly work as one, I am reminded of the beautiful design of the nature of the church. Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Helping Others Is Always a Priority

ine years ago, non-profit organization, Acupuncture for Veterans and their Families (AVF) was in it’s very early stages. As a founding member, I spoke with a lot of people, asking questions and seeking guidance. This newspaper’s publisher, Kelly Martindale volunteered to be one of the original AVF board members, and offered her extensive non-profit expertise. I was also put into contact with Larry Rand who is involved with a few non-profit organizations including, Veterans Helping Veterans Now. Larry’s direct questions and subsequent guidance helped AVF to become known in the large veteran community, and avoid some common mistakes. Though life is busy, Larry and I kept in contact, asking each other for help within our particular niches. Most often we recommended veterans to one another’s associated non-profit organizations. Even when Veterans Helping Veterans Now chose to operate informally, Larry and a few other members carried on offering rides, help with fixing up a home, moving or being there when someone needed to talk. In April of this year I called Larry to find out if he knew of a veteran that needed a new roof. I explained that Greenpoint Roofing in Longmont has a history of providing community service, and is offering a roof to a veteran. Long story

short, Larry explained the predicament he was in with his own need of roof replacement. I told him I’d give his number to my husband so that Chris could help him through the process. Larry replied, there’s probably someone that needs one more than I do. This was the type of reply that I had become used to hearing from veterans. After some conversation, I used Larry’s own words to convince him: “It’s your turn”. Chris Blankenship of Greenpoint Roofing contacted Larry and managed the project. The roof was installed on Memorial Day. To Larry’s surprise, Paint Denver offered to give the house a brand new coat of paint as well. Paint is scheduled for July. Larry is a person that keeps other people in mind. He authentically communicates and connects with people in the community. By taking the time to provide a service for him, he is given time to not only take care of himself, but spend time with others who need him as well.

NOCO Comedy Show/ Auction to Help a Family NOCO Police and Fire Families is a nonprofit developed by a Northern Colorado Police Sergeant and his wife. Firestone Call for Artists The call for entries is now open. Artists are welcome to apply for admission into the show by filling out the application online at www.firestoneco.gov/ArtandMusic. Firestone’s 17th Annual 4th at Firestone The celebration of Independence Day in Firestone explodes with a day full of activities including a patriotic parade, live music, great food and an evening event filled with fun and fireworks. This year’s festivities mark the 17th annual 4th at Firestone event on July 4, 2019. The parade will begin at 10 a.m. and make its way from Thunder Valley K-8, in Frederick, through Historic Firestone to Miners Park for the day’s celebration. Floats, decorated vehicle displays, marching bands, classic cars, motorcycles and more will compile a parade lineup that residents and festival attendees will not want to miss! Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation of Older Adults - Some helpful information

om Gonzales and Andy Pittman, who work for the Weld County Area Agency on Aging Adult Protection (APS), gave an informative presentation last month at the Carbon Valley Networking meeting held at the Carbon Valley Library. Their presentation reviewed what Adult Protective Services does, what is abuse, neglect and exploitation in older adults, how to make a report and what happens once APS gets involved. This article will cover some of what they presented. Since July 1, 2014, certain professionals are mandatory reporters of abuse, caretaker neglect and exploitation of at risk-elders. And on July 1, 2016, Intellectual, developmentally disabled adults 18 years and older are also included in Mandatory Reporting. There are many professionals in our community that are required to report abuse; all medical providers, all mental health providers, hospital and long term care facilities, dentists, fire fighters, bank personnel, caregivers, clergy and emergency service providers to name a few.  If you are a mandatory reporter and you witness or become aware that an at-risk elder has been or is at imminent risk for mistreatment (abuse, caretaker neglect, or exploitation), you must make a report to law enforcement within 24 hours. What is an at-risk elder? An at-risk elder is any person who is 70 years of age or older as of July 1, 2014, per Colorado Statute.

At-risk Adults  At-risk adults are persons 18 years of age or older who are susceptible to mistreatment or self-neglect because: they are unable to obtain necessary support services, or they lack suﬃcient understanding or capacity to make or communicate responsible decisions.  Conditions that increase risk include dementia, physical or medical frailty, developmental disabilities, brain injury and behavioral disorders.

Examples of adults who ARE NOT at risk: • A 35 year old man who walks with a cane or uses a wheelchair but is able to perform all activities necessary to provide for his health and safety. • An adult of any age with decisionmaking capacity who: • Makes poor investment decisions or participates in a lottery scam; • Is involved in a landlord-tenant dispute; • Chooses to live in a dirty home or with multiple pets; • Uses alcohol and drugs to excess.

How to make a report to Adult Protective Services Have as much information as possible about the at-risk elder, the alleged perpetrator, and what is concerning you. Law enforcement will need the following information: 1. Name and address of the at-risk elder. 2. A description of the alleged mistreatment and the situation; what did you observe? 3. What is the nature and extent of the injury? 4. Who is the alleged perpetrator; name and address if possible. 5. Any other information that you feel is relevant. 6. To report abuse/caretaker neglect or exploitation of an at-risk elder contact your local law enforcement agency. 7. All other reports can be made to the Weld County Department of Human Services:

Friendly Fork Lunch Volunteers are the Best

he Friendly Fork Lunch for Seniors in Carbon Valley is managed by an all volunteer team. These are an awesome group of volunteers, that give of their time and talent so that each client/person can have a fun and relaxing experience. They are a committed team who love what they do in supporting and giving back to the community and Seniors they serve. The fun loving group of volunteers who set up the meal site, serve the delivered meals, then clean up and secure everything --they do it all. To top it off each volunteer goes to a annual certification event which is required by the Weld County Health Department and as a result of this training we have passed all inspections 100% for the past 6 years. The meals are prepared by the UNC Dining Services under the direction of Nutritionist and served by the volunteers every Tuesday and Thursday. Seniors can get a hot nutritious meal for a suggested donation of $4.00 at the Rec Center located at 701 5th Street, Frederick. We have been doing this for 6 years and served over 19,000 meals Its all about Talking, laughing and having a meal with friends. The meals fill a nutritional need many Seniors tend to neglect and less inclined to cook for themselves. We keep the event simple,light and friendly. Hall Of Fame Celebration

ongratulations to Bobby and Roberta Montano of Firestone who were inducted into the Greeley/Weld Senior Foundation Hall of Fame. The event was held at the Greeley Country Club with a Kentucky Derby theme. They have been volunteering for the Friendly Fork Lunch Program from the beginning six years ago. Their consistent volunteer effort at the Nutrition Lunch Program, the Senior Center, the Help Center in Firestone is proof of their commitment to widespread volunteerism. In addition, Bobby volunteers with the Weld Food Bank, by bringing food from the Weld Food Truck to Seniors who live in the Dacono Senior Housing. That effort, promotes the quality of life for those seniors, who would not otherwise receive those basic necessities. You might say they do it all. Both have an outgoing personality an a heartfelt desire to serve and take time to be pleasant and helpful. As the Site Coordinator for the Friendly Fork Lunch Program I take Bobby and Roberta’s suggestions seriously and by adding them to the Hall of Fame is an honor to the volunteer programs they serve. Frederick Student Wins National Essay Contest

very year the Daughters of the American Revolution conducts a national essay contest for students in 5th through 8th grade and each year the Longs Peak NSDAR participates and selects winners from local schools. Winners are selected at each grade and this year’s local winner, Reagan Mraz from St. John the Baptist school, won the local 7th grade contest, the Colorado state contest, and the national contest. Reagan will be honored on the evening of June 27th in Washington, D.C. along with the 5th, 6th, and 8th grade national winners. Reagan is the daughter of Eric Mraz of Frederick. She was the 6th grade winner for both the local chapter and the state contest last year.

What I’ve Learned in Nine Years of Business for Myself

launched my social marketing business Face to Face in June of 2010. I’d never owned my own business before and had never even considered being an entrepreneur! Approved by the Board of County Commissioners at Monday’s meeting, Dairy Tech, Inc. is one of those small businesses able to take advantage of this program. “It’s great to see businesses continually apply and prosper from this program,” said Scott James, Weld County Commissioner and Coordinator of the Planning Department. “This program allows small businesses in Weld County to thrive; allowing them to keep serving our residents.” Since the program began in 2014, a total of $153,608 has been distributed to nine small businesses to help offset permitting and land use application fees. The program was established with $500,000 from the county’s economic development fund in 2014 and is facilitated by the Board of Commissioners and the Department of Planning Services. This year alone, small businesses have been awarded $90,000. Housing Inventory on the Rise

n a real estate market that has been starving for housing inventory for years, May 2019 showed some excellent signs that things might finally be changing, with our active housing inventory almost hitting 9,000 available homes on the market. That is the highest amount of available homes on the market all at once since the end of 2013. This much needed uptick is an excellent trend in my opinion. Buyers are finally getting to make sound decisions within their home search. For a while, buyers were forced to make quick, rash decisions based on the competitive market. Getting time to choose on one of their largest investments in life is naturally the way it should be. Although positive inventory levels exist, things are still presently leaning towards a sellers’ market. Sellers are still getting over 99% of their list price and

going under contract in about 30 days on average. The days of multiple offers on your home within the first couple days on market is starting to be a distant memory. Now more than ever, it is important for sellers to interview a couple agents when going to list their home to make sure the agent has a professional marketing plan and experience in negotiation. The value of a great agent lies within this plan and allows you to still maximize top dollar in our current market. Cody Michael Johnson

October 9, 1989 to May 26, 2019

Cody Michael Johnson passed away May 26, 2019 at his home. He was 29 years old. Cody was born on October 9, 1989 in Longmont, CO to Michael and Patricia (Mohlenbruck) Johnson. On February 6, 2019, he married Haailee Lawley. Cody worked as an HVAC technician with his dad at Johnson Mechanical. He attended New Horizons Christian Church and was a part of the Project One car club. Cody loved to race cars, ride motorcycles, and especially loved his daughters. He also enjoyed camping and fishing. He always lived life to the fullest. Cody is survived by his wife, Haailee; his daughters, Lexi Johnson, Alliyah Lefforge and Madison Flanders; his parents, Mike and Patti Johnson; his brothers, T.J. (Amy) Murphy and John Johnson; his grandparents, Jan Johnson and Jeanne and Leonard Propps; his two nieces, Aubrey and Ashley; his aunt, Janene Johnson; his cousins, Zach and Jessica Johnson; and numerous other aunts, uncles and cousins. A funeral service was held at 2:30 pm, Saturday, June 8, 2019 at New Horizons Christian Church in Dacono with visitation one hour prior. Cremation followed the service entrusted to Ahlberg Funeral Chapel and Crematory. Memorial contributions can be made to the Cody Johnson Memorial Fund at TBK bank in Johnstown. Snagged off Nextdoor About Town of Frederick  Reading the concerns that are listed I have to echo what Trustee ONeal said. The issues involving Highway 52 are real and we are very aware of them. We are working with CDOT on those issues regularly. One of the reasons that it is moving so slow is that Frederick is not the only community along the Highway 52 corridor. The corridor stretches from Keenesburg all the way to Erie. Each community has their own issues and each feels that theirs is the most important. Improvements will be done but when dealing with CDOT, it is a slow process. The Board meets a minimum of twice a month with CDOT and the other communities trying to address these issues. Writing your state congress and asking for their help would help a lot.  As far as the water issues we are dealing with those almost weekly. I attend monthly meetings for the Windy Gap Project and the NISP Project. Mayor Carey and our acting Town Manager Kirstyn Javonovich are speaking to people from both of these projects constantly looking for any possibilities for the chance of the purchase of water to assure

Fredericks water concerns are met.  The Board is very much aware of the growth and the need for commercial properties to be addressed. That is being done also.  As a Board, we would love to see more of our residents taking an hour or so to attend some of the Board of Trustee meetings to hear and see what is going on and to voice your concerns or ask questions. We know it’s not the niftiest way to spend a Tuesday night however, you may be surprised at what you hear and see.  Also, all of the Trustees have email addresses and phone numbers that any of you can use to voice your concerns or ask questions. They are listed on the Frederick Town Web Site. My personal email and cell number can be used if any of you wish to at any time. We were all elected for everyone in Frederick. ost fatal crashes in Colorado occur during the three-month span between Memorial Day and Labor Day. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) is working to combat this serious issue with increased safety enforcement and outreach as a key component of its Whole System – Whole Safety initiative. CDOT will start by joining forces with Colorado State Patrol (CSP) and local law enforcement agencies in the Summer Blitz DUI enforcement period to apprehend impaired drivers and protect motorists on Colorado roadways. The enforcement period extends from June 14 to June 24. “More cars on the road, more impaired drivers, and an increase in motorcyclists, bicyclists and pedestrians are all factors that contribute to the spike in motor vehicle fatalities seen during the summer months,” said Shoshana Lew, Executive Director of CDOT. “Impaired drivers pose an entirely preventable risk to our transportation network, making DUI enforcement a key component as we aim to reduce deaths and injuries on Colorado roads.” Last year’s Summer Blitz enforcement period resulted in a total of 584 DUI arrests from 109 agencies across the state. This year’s enforcement period will include 97 law enforcement agencies, who will be using increased patrols to ensure that motorists are safe on the road. “CSP and other law enforcement agencies will be on the lookout for impaired drivers during this enforcement period,” said Col. Matthew Packard, Chief of the CSP. “Driving impaired is never worth the risk of endangering a life, including your own. Enjoy the summer season, but make sure that you are sober, focused and buckled up every time you get behind the wheel.” The Summer Blitz enforcement will be followed by four additional DUI enforcement periods spread throughout the summer, aimed at keeping drivers aware of their consumption and off of the road when impaired. CDOT will also focus on rural Colorado for the July Click It or Ticket summer seat belt enforcement campaign. A seat belt is the single best defense drivers and passengers have to protect themselves from an impaired or distracted driver. Rural residents will be asked to find their reason to buckle up and stay safe throughout the summer season.
