Children Win Big Here
Firestone Charter Academy Early Learning Center is breaking ground for a new building set to open for the 2022-2023 school year. Last fall, Firestone Charter Academy’s governing board voted to move forward with the construction of a custom modular building for the preschool program. The modular building frees up two classrooms to be used to accommodate the needs of the growing school community! The new building will allow for the preschool program to have their own dedicated space while still being a part of the overall Firestone Charter Academy community. The preschool team is grateful for their families, the school board and the administration for their continuing support during this process and their recognition that early childhood
education is a very important piece of the puzzle. Firestone Charter Academy is located at 5753 Twilight Avenue, in Firestone. Parents can contact Tera Hammer, Director at 303-772-3711 or by emailing her at: tera.hammer@

Giver = Fred Skates
When Fred Skates moved to Frederick in 2006, he excitedly looked for opportunities to become involved in the area’s activities. Starting with the Southwest Weld Network Meetings, Fred’s attendance and involvement with other local organizations flourished. Hearing that the Town of Frederick was looking for citizen involvement on a variety of committees was a timely opportunity for him to express interest and serve. During his tenure with the Town of Frederick, his service included the Parks and Open Space Commission, the Miners Day Committee, and the Board of Trustees, which he served on for eight years. In addition to his lengthy involvement with the Town of Frederick, Fred also served two terms on the Board of Directors for the St. Vrain Sanitation District and as a Board Member for the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce where he helped with their two largest events, the Annual Golf Tournament and the Annaul Member Dinner. If you were to ask Fred about one of his proudest moments while living in the Carbon Valley, it would undoubtedly be when a group of ten people decided to start the Carbon Valley Help Center (CVHC). The sole mission of the CVHC, a non-profit organization located in Firestone, is to help people in immediate need, move toward self-sufficiency by unifying Carbon Valley resources. Getting behind this mission was near and dear to Fred’s heart and allowed for him to go from a founding Board Member to later serving as Board President. It is no wonder that nine years after its founding, he still supports this incredible organization as a volunteer. For the past sixteen years Fred has fulfilled his goal of community involvement and servitude while simultaneously acting as the compliance officer for the St. Vrain Property Owners Association. Often, you will find Fred with a big smile to match his enormous heart, all while drinking his favorite beverages, a cold Dr. Pepper. Fred recently relocated to Thornton and the E.L.F. Grill in Dacono, would like you to stop by on Wednesday, July 20th from 2-4pm to say hello to Fred and wish him well in his new chapter. Fred’s presence in the Carbon Valley will be missed, but his contribution to the Town of Frederick and its surrounding areas will forever be remembered. Thank you, Fred!

What's OnMy Mind Kelly Martindale, Publisher
Caring for the Whole Woman Sexually active at a young age, she shared, “I didn’t want to have sex. Not really. I just didn’t know how to say ‘no’ in a way that he’d take me seriously.” She was pregnant less than three years later, still in high school and a teenager. “That’s when a woman came to my house and told me I should get an abortion. Counting on her fingers she stated, 1. I’m too young to be pregnant and
2. Too poor. 3. I can’t do it on my own and who is going to help me? (Both my mom and the father’s mom said, ‘Don’t call me. I won’t babysit.) 4. I shouldn’t buy cheap Walmart shoes, or my baby would walk wrong, be crippled. And 5. I should get an abortion. I cried most of that night, knowing I already loved my baby. I didn’t know how I was going to do it, but I knew I was going to let my baby live.” Not an uncommon story, even in 2022, although this was some years back. The truth is most unmarried females with an unplanned pregnancy fear the future. information, truthfully, completely. They don’t push a woman to parent. Or push a woman toward adoption. Or push a woman to abort. They answer every question a woman asks. They offer services to help her while she’s deciding what she wants to do. When a female leaves the pregnancy center, after finding out if she is pregnant, she leaves with knowledge to help her make an educated decision. She is aware of the possible impacts that each of the three choices may have on her: parenting, adoption, and abortion. She leaves the center with usable, helpful, tools to move forward. Facilities that provide abortions are a business and have one agenda. The nonprofit pregnancy center is not a business and does not gain or lose money because of any decision made by a pregnant woman. A friend recently made a very valid statement. Overturning Roe v. Wade put the “choice” back into the voters’ hands, under the authority of the individual state. With that, it was ridiculous to vandalize a local pregnancy center in a state [Colorado] that allows abortion… even up to the moment of birth. That’s legal in several states who have no time limit on abortions: Colorado, Oregon, New Mexico, Vermont, New Jersey, and Alaska. I can relate to someone who has missed their period, feared a pregnancy, and considered abortion early on. I can even relate to being raped and fearing the horror of being pregnant. I cannot imagine carrying a baby to full term and then making the decision to let the baby die. Especially with the thousands of families who’d adopt the baby in an instant. If you or someone you know has an unplanned pregnancy or chose abortion

Grossen Bart Brewing ‘lake of beer’ for Celtic Fest 2022 Legend tells of St. Brigit miraculously turning bathwater into beer, offering both nutrition and hydration to needy lepers and clerics. She averted disaster for those communities, providing much-needed food and drink at one stroke. A prayer attributed to Brigit offers God a “great lake of beer.” For Celtic Fest 2022, Sept 24 and 25 in Frederick, CO, Grossen Bart Brewery in Longmont will be supplying its own version of Brigit’s Bath Water Beer, a tasty Irish red ale that has been a part of Celtic Fest since its inception in 2017. Now with the festival extended to two full days, Grossen Bart may need two bathtubs! Established in July 2012 by three partners, the small 10bbl brewery can run four fermenters, and will soon add a fifth. Each beer needs three weeks to 30 days from start to finish, guided by recently arrived brewmaster Kevin Paquette and Taylor Wise, one of the founders. Current beers in the rotation include an IPA “Fogel McChin Curtain,” a maibock “Bock You,” a 720 pale ale, and “Half Beard Helles.” New to the line-up is a hoppy American wheat beer, with a pilsner coming in June. The brewery features a friendly tavern area, and often hosts food trucks and entertainment. A tight community of regular supporters and “big fans who wanted us to stay here” helped the brewery survive the pandemic, and it even offered a venue for farmers marketing their produce. Wise and Paquette look forward to playing a part in Celtic Fest. “It’s a good way to connect to the community and to support a good cause,” they said. St. Brigit Episcopal Church hosts the annual Celtic Fest (www.celticfestbrigit.org) in Frederick, CO on its grounds at 110 Johnson St. Event specifics: • Festival Hours 11 AM to 7 PM Saturday Sept. 24; 11 AM to 4 PM Sunday Sept. 25. United Power Joins Southwest Power Pool United Power, an electric cooperative based in Brighton, Colorado, is the first distribution utility in the Western Interconnection to join the Southwest Power Pool (SPP). SPP is a regional transmission organization (RTO), a nonprofit corporation mandated by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission to ensure reliable supplies of power, adequate transmission infrastructure, and competitive wholesale electricity prices on behalf of its members. “Since United Power is leaving our current wholesale power supplier in 2024, it is important that we seek out memberships and partnerships that will help us assure a reliable power source at the lowest cost possible,” stated Mark A. Gabriel, United Power President and CEO. “Our membership with SPP is one of the critical pieces we wanted in place as we move toward a new energy future for our members.” SPP works as an aggregator of generation resources, dispatching the power where it is needed. The value of belonging to an RTO is multi-pronged for cooperatives like United Power. The power pool is charged with building reliability and predictability into their power marketplace and helping to reduce the risks that come with varying weather conditions. It is also committed to providing the lowest cost power available to serve its members, minute by minute. The SPP is responsible for identifying power needs for the region it serves. Members of SPP will have an active role in determining where new transmission is built and will be able to have their interests represented directly. “Membership matters. Our membership in SPP means we will have a meaningful say in the strategic direction of the organization,” stated Gabriel. “Members have an active role in determining how this new energy market develops and how the organization grows. We will be able to directly represent the interests of all United Power members.”

FERC Rules in Favor of United Power
Free
AND Sunflower CVCR_2022 July 4_625x7_5.indd 1
The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) this week issued four initial decisions as part of the rate settlement proceedings between United Power, an electric cooperative headquartered in Brighton, Colo., and its wholesale power supplier Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association, Inc. (Tri-State). On May 26, FERC Administrative Law Judge Scott Hempling handed down decisions in the cooperative’s favor on three of four issues and ordered Tri-State to give United Power significant refunds concerning energy storage resources (i.e., battery storage). As one of the settling parties, United Power agreed to the rate settlement at FERC after four key issues were reserved and set for hearing this spring: transmission and delivery system cost unbundling, direct assignment of non-networked delivery facilities (cost causation), energy storage resources, and the discriminatory nature of Tri-State’s Board Policy 119 (BP 119) regarding community solar programs. “These rulings are significant as they will provide long term benefits to all TriState cooperatives and their members, in identifying and controlling system costs and assuring the costs are allocated to those who benefit,” said Mark A. Gabriel, United Power President and Chief Executive Officer. “The decision will also impact Tri-State’s claims in the contract termination payment methodology currently awaiting FERC decision, and guide the future work of Tri-State’s rate design committee as the ruling dictates rate structure, ultimately mandating more transparency to all Tri-State members.” Under the rulings in favor of United Power, FERC determined that Tri-State must unbundle its rates into generation, transmission, and each of the six ancillary services, assuring that the costs of each element are properly identified and disclosed. The FERC judge also determined that Tri-State’s 2023 come-back filing must explain the integration status of each element using appropriate accounting and engineering data, allocating the associated costs accordingly so that facilities used to deliver electric power are properly identified and the costs allocated to those who use them known as “cost causation.” Further, it was found that Tri-State’s special policy for certain community solar programs (BP 119) is unduly discriminatory. This results from a cost-benefit ratio that varies widely depending on a member’s size. Judge Hempling characterized this mismatch of costs and benefits under BP 119 as “textbook undue discrimination.” A split decision was issued regarding energy storage resources. It was found that TriState improperly charged United Power and must provide refunds from September 2019 forward. Judge Hempling specifically ruled that Tri-State cannot use board policies to manipulate the contract and filed rate terms. He also ruled that Tri-State’s inconsistent treatment of energy storage resources is unduly discriminatory, but resolution of that issue was outside the scope of the proceeding. “The reserved issues before FERC are ahead of the rate settlement case being heard in Washington, D.C., and final rulings on these issues bring United Power closer to our contract termination payment determination,” said Gabriel. “We are pleased with the fair outcomes of these rulings by FERC and look forward to the day when United Power has more control of the power supply mix serving our members.” United Power filed a non-conditional Notice of Intent to Withdraw from Tri-State, effective May 1, 2024, and simultaneously issued a request for proposals for up to 600 MW of wholesale electric supply. A ruling from the presiding FERC judge on exit fees for Tri-State members is expected by the end of the summer, with a final decision expected in 2023.

Is owning a home worth it?
There are many very good reasons to own a home, but for this article, I’m going to focus just on one very dramatic reason: Household Wealth. Take a look at this chart and the dramatic difference in US Household Wealth
for Renters vs. Homeowners. Whether the market is fairly stable, or prices are going up dramatically, as they have the last few years, the difference is huge! If you or someone in your family is not a homeowner yet, contact your local Realtor to put together a plan to become one.

The Homeschool Awakening: “Putting Fun,
Faith And Adventure Back Into Education”
The Homeschool Awakening is an enthusiastic, encouraging documentary on the positive nature of homeschooling. Many couples give testimony to their journey in homeschooling. The children share the benefits of being taught at home. The movie answers many common questions people have about the practices, and success, of homeschooled children. The parents and experts interviewed stress that one size does not fit all. Homeschooling can seem like a monumental task. However, families can work together and get help from homeschooling co-ops. Such factors make the task of homeschooling not only achievable, but also desirable. Narrated by Kirk Cameron, THE HOMESCHOOL AWAKENING is an inspiring, wholesome documentary. The parents stress the joy and enrichment that homeschooling bestows on their families. Both parents and children say they enjoy the flexibility homeschooling allows them. By homeschooling their children, parents can focus on the uniqueness of their children, which is known only to them. Also, children can spend more time excelling in their special talents or skills, instead of being slaves to a “cookie cutter” curriculum. THE HOMESCHOOL AWAKENING has a strong Christian worldview that extols faith and family. By www.movieguide.org

TNT - Winner of 2022 Colorado Companies to Watch This year’s Colorado Companies to Watch Winners have been selected and will be announced at the 14th Annual Gala Awards Dinner on Friday, June 17, 2022 at the Denver Hyatt Regency Tech Center. In its 14th year, Colorado Companies to Watch (CCTW) is a unique program that honors high-performing secondstage companies from across the state for their performance in the marketplace, innovative products, unique processes and philanthropic actions. Second-stage companies are those that have moved past the startup stage and into a period of steady state growth. The companies selected make a point about Colorado’s diverse economic landscape. They make an astounding impact on the state’s economy by collectively providing thousands of jobs and contributing millions of dollars in revenue. “Congratulations to all our winner’s this year! CCTW’s timehonored and rigorous judging process has revealed Colorado’s most visionary, innovative, and successful 2nd Stage companies. These companies employ approximately thirty percent of our
state’s talent and have made a $595M impact on Colorado’s economy,” remarked Kim Woodworth, Executive Director of the Economic Development Council of Colorado and CCTW’s 2022 Board Chair. “A more resounding impact is the amount of investment they’ve given back to Colorado’s non-profits serving our local communities. An overwhelming amount of financial and time commitment support was given within the past year. Without this type of give back, many of our support services wouldn’t get the necessary funding needed to serve our communities.” A select panel of esteemed judges chose the award-winning companies from an impressive list of finalists, who were ultimately selected from the 1,100 nominations gathered from across the state. The Gala Awards Dinner on Friday, June 17, 2022 officially announces and honors the 2022 Colorado Companies to Watch for their contributions to the state’s economic vitality and future. 2022 Colorado Companies to Watch Hall of Fame Winner Timberline Bank

Life Stories Child & Family Advocacy To Raise Awareness of Child Abuse with “Save Jane” Event OBI-WAN KENOBI: PART IV Life Stories to Read Names Representing 2,684 Children Assessed for Abuse Last Year. Lincoln Park, Greeley – July 12 – from 11:00 to 2:00 pm or later, local community members and leaders will join Life Stories in taking a stand against child abuse at their 2nd Annual “Save Jane” event in Weld County. For about 3 hours, volunteers from around Weld County will anonymously read the names and ages of 2,684 children who were assessed for abuse or neglect in Weld County in 2021. Because these children are minors and their identities must be protected, Jane, John, Juana, and Juan Doe will be used in place of their names. The Save Jane inaugural event launched in Dallas in 2019. This is the second year for Life Stories to join in the awareness effort. “Life Stories hopes that through Save Jane, our community will recognize the magnitude and prevalence of child abuse in Weld County. It is an issue that knows no bounds and impacts children over all demographics,” said Life Stories Executive Director Gwen Schooley. “It will take about 3 hours of non-stop reading to name each child who was assess for abuse and neglect last year. It is simply unacceptable that so many children in our community have been affected by some form of abuse. The Save Jane event will take the time to honor each individual child and the experience they have endured. We never stop fighting for these kids who have suffered unspeakable abuse. Life Stories, through our Child Advocacy Centers and CASA programs, and Darkness to Light prevention workshops, will continue to do our work, but we need the community’s help.” Influential leaders from around the community have signed up for shifts to read names throughout the event. Life Stories welcomes all community members to take a turn on-stage and participate in this impactful event by reading a selection of names. To join the movement by purchasing a shirt or making a donation visit https://www. lifestoriesweld.org/save-jane-weld. Then come and support our event as we read the names on July 12. About Life Stories Life Stories is a Greeley non-profit organization serving abused and neglected children in Weld County through our three programs: CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates), Child Advocacy Centers of Weld County, and Darkness to Light Stewards of Children. We have provided child victims of sexual abuse with the services needed to heal for over 20 years. www.lifestoriesweld.org About Save Jane Save Jane is a child abuse awareness event that was launched by Dallas Children’s Advocacy Center (DCAC) in 2019 with the goal of spreading awareness about the magnitude of child abuse, and about the organizations working in the field. TV RATING: TV-PG STARRING: Ewan McGregor, Vivien Lyra Blair, Moses Ingram, Sung Kang, Indira Varma, James Earl Jones, Hayden Christensen, Zach Braff WRITER: Joby Harold, Hannah Friedman BASED ON STAR WARS BY: George Lucas GENRE: Science Fiction INTENDED AUDIENCE: Older children and adults PART IV of OBI-WAN KENOBI, a STAR WARS series streaming on Disney+, shows Ben Kenobi and a friendly female spy trying to rescue 10-year-old Princess Leia from a prison fortress, where an evil inquisitor for the Empire is interrogating Leia. Part IV is one of the two best OBI-WAN KENOBI episodes and has an exhilarating, stirring rescue plot with wonderful moments of narrow escapes, heroism, sacrifice, and courage. The episode opens with Ben and his new friend, an undercover spy named Tala, learning that Inquisitor Reva has taken 10-year-old Leia, to a fortified prison fortress on a water planet. They hatch a plan whereby Tala will infiltrate the base under the guise of her Imperial uniform. She will then help Ben sneak onto the base to help Leia escape, with Tala’s help. The plan goes well at first, but complications ensue. PART IV has an exhilarating, stirring rescue plot. There are wonderful moments of narrow escapes, heroism, sacrifice, and courage. All the performances are spot on. The episode has a morally uplifting, conservative worldview about a group of freedom fighters fighting back against an evil, tyrannical empire trying to rule the galaxy. Also, for the first time ever in a STAR WARS property, there’s an appeal to God instead of “The Force.” However, the episode does have scenes of a child, Princess Leia, in jeopardy. For example, [Spoilers Follow] Inquisitor Reva tries to entice Leia to tell her about the people in the previous episode who helped her and Obi-Wan Kenobi. Then, when Leia refuses, Reva decides to force Leia to talk, but Tala creates a diversion that makes Reva leave the room and allows Obi-Wan to rescue Leia while dispatching the two stormtroopers guarding her. The following escape attempt endangers Leia, Obi-Wan and Tala. MOVIEGUIDE® advises caution for younger children.

Weld County Celebrates The Importance Of Reunification The Weld County Board of Commissioners proclaimed June 2022 as Reunification Month at Monday’s board meeting to recognize the value of helping families stay together in Weld County. Reunification Month is a time to celebrate families and communities and raise awareness about the importance of family reunification for children in foster care. Because of the important bond between child, parents and family members, reunification with parents and family is the best option and the preferred outcome. Sometimes parents can encounter problems that require attention and assistance to ensure the safety and caring support of their children and their family. Reunification is the ultimate goal of the Weld County Department of Human Services (DHS). In 2021 61% of child welfare cases in the DHS resulted in reunification, while in 2022, 59% have been successfully reunified. One family in attendance who successfully reunified with their children spoke of how much DHS staff helped them overcome obstacles they didn’t think were possible and thanked them for their support in getting their family back — “Thank God for the team here.” Beyond celebrating families who have successfully reunified with their children, reunification month also highlights the efforts of the many support staff and community partners who help families along the way. “In Weld County, we recognize the vital role our support staff and that community partners play in helping to reunify, strengthen, and support families. These valued partnerships include mental health and substance abuse providers, courts, judges, kinship providers, foster parents and many others,” said Tami Grant, Deputy Director of DHS. “We would like parents to know, especially those going through the recovery process, that it is possible to confront and resolve the issues that led to separation to reunify with their children.” DHS will be honoring families by highlighting success stories later in the month with a small celebration including community partners, staff and reunified families. For more information about foster care in Weld County, visit https://www.weldgov.com/ Government/Departments/Human-Services/Foster-Care.

Health&WELL BEING Food for the Soul: Things We Shouldn’t Pray
Don’t Pray. Most folks I 1999-2022 talk to about prayer think they should be praying more than they do. If it’s generally true about Christians that we don’t pray as much or as often as we’d like to, then let’s make sure that when we are praying, we are doing the most good. We may not be used to thinking about the things we should not pray for or about, but it’s true that there are some things for which we shouldn’t be praying. For example, Christians should not be praying for things which are outside the will or the character of God. There is an expectation for God’s people to mature spiritually over the years and as we grow in that, our prayers change. This change happens, I believe, mostly due to our better understanding of God, of His word and His will. First, don’t pray for things that God expects of you. For example, don’t pray for food if you are not willing to work. 2 Thessalonians 3:10, Paul writes, “For even when we were with you, we used to give you this order: if anyone is not willing to work, then he is not to eat, either.” In the case of the church at Thessalonica, there were some who believed Christ’s return to be imminent, and so some had stopped working. If Jesus is coming back to get us in a week from now, why work? These people began to be a burden upon their brethren, and so Paul commands the principle that if you won’t work, you shouldn’t eat. I am borrowing this principle and applying it more widely to say, don’t ask God for things that he expects you to take care of. We need to work hard, to do what we can, to help ourselves, and not expect free stuff. Please
don’t email me about situations regarding people who cannot work because of some disability or incapacitation. Clearly, I am not addressing that. Second, don’t pray the sinner’s prayer for salvation. Neither commands nor examples of a sinner’s prayer are found in God’s word. Denominations and community churches are slowly moving away from this false teaching and you should too if you haven’t. Read and study the New Testament to find out how people were saved, and then teach and practice the same today. The only acceptable “Sinner’s Prayer” is one like that found in Luke 18:13. Third, don’t pray for God to save an unbeliever, an atheist, or an unrepentant Christian. Because He won’t. It is outside of His will. God is not willing for any to perish, but for all to come to repentance (2 Peter 3:9). But, salvation is not obtained because concerned family or friends asked God to save them. Even when Jesus was compassionate to sinners, he dealt with their situation and then said, “Sin no more” (repent). In 1 John 5:13-20, John writes about sins leading and not leading to death. When a Christian sins while “walking in the light” (1 John 1:7) he or she is committing a sin not leading to death because he or she has forgiveness. But if a Christian commits sin leading to death….John doesn’t want prayers made asking God to give this person life. Basically, what’s happening here is when a Christian begins to sin and does not have a repentant heart about it. This person begins to practice sin, rather than righteousness (1 John 3:1-10) and without repentance will not receive forgiveness no matter how many people pray asking God to give him life. Instead of asking God to save unrepentant

Three Things About Vitamin D It’s summer and most of us associate vitamin D with the sun. According to the National Institute of Health (NIH), the overall prevalence rate of vitamin D deficiency is 41.6%, with the highest rate seen in blacks (82.1%), followed by Hispanics (69.2%). Why do you need vitamin D. Vitamin D is key in absorbing calcium to maintain bone health and strengthen your bones. It also helps support a healthy brain, heart, teeth and lungs. It keeps your immune system strong and can help regulate insulin levels. It also keeps your energy levels up and enhances your mood. And these days, I think we could all benefit from having a “good mood”. What are three things you need to know about Vitamin D – we need exposure to the sun, it’s fat soluble and has health consequences if chronically low. Sunscreen and wearing long sleeves following skin cancer prevention campaigns sabotaged us in terms of Vitamin D. As soon as you apply sunscreen, your body basically no longer absorbs vitamin D. And covering up in long sleeve shirts, hats, and other clothing items blocks the absorption as well. You can safely get sun exposure – get outside early morning or later afternoon. Just make sure to not cover up! But if you do wear sunscreen, pick a good one. Go to EWG’s sunscreen database to evaluate the safety and efficacy of SPF-rated products. Vitamin D is fat soluble so eat some healthy fat at each meal. The myth of “eating fat makes you fat” was a huge contributor to the no-fat fad! But without a healthy fat, your body will not absorb vitamins A, D, K, and E. So don’t be afraid to have a small serving of a healthy fat at each meal. Newer studies suggest low levels of vitamin D can be linked to numerous health problems including diabetes, pain in your muscles and bones, multiple sclerosis and even some types of cancer. Additionally, according to the NIH, Vitamin D deficiency has been found to be associated with mortality and several diseases ranging from cardiovascular disease to autoimmune diseases and liver diseases. The subtle symptoms of low Vit D include: tiredness, bone and joint pain, sour mood, more frequent illness, anxiety, weight gain, and hair loss. I don’t recommend a lot of supplements but vitamin D is one I do. Just make sure you know what you’re buying as all supplements aren’t created equal. The Institute of Medicine recommends that people get at a minimum 200600 IU’s of vitamin D daily. For more information on this or what foods are high in vitamin D or other health concerns, contact me. Christians or even our unbelieving family and friends, pray for God to bring things into their life that may cause them to wake up and come to their senses. Pray for God to bring influential people into their lives, pray for some trial that would help them seek the truth. Pray for God to give them more time to repent. Don’t pray for God to save them, rather pray that God would use you and events in their life to bring them to repentance. Fourth, don’t pray for God to curse your enemies. Look, I realize that David wrote psalms of imprecation, but that doesn’t mean you should too. To imprecate means to call down disaster, calamity, and destruction upon your enemies. Many times in the Psalms David asks God to punish or destroy those who are seeking him harm. There is even one place where he wishes for his enemies to be damned, “Add iniquity to their iniquity, And may they not come into Your righteousness. May they be blotted out of the book of life And may they not be recorded with the righteous” (Psalm 69:27, 28). I do not blame David for writing this or for feeling this way. The Psalms are emotional expressions captured in specific moments in a person’s life. Besides that, we have more of God’s will revealed to us through Jesus and the New Testament. We have clear and simple commands regarding how our attitude needs to be controlled and our conduct performed. Romans 12:14, 19 “Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse.” And “Never take your own revenge, beloved, but leave room for the wrath of God, for it is written, “VENGEANCE IS MINE, I WILL REPAY,” says the Lord.” See Luke 6:27- 36 for Jesus’ teaching on loving enemies. Fifth, don’t pray for things born out of lusts
or covetousness. To expand this wide open, let me be clear. Don’t pray for ease in life. We all like our comfort zones, but nothing grows there, especially spiritually maturity. God is not interested in you living a cushy life. If you are an American in modern times, by comparison, you already live a life of ease, don’t pray for God to make it easier. Count your blessing and be thankful. Don’t pray for things or people that do not belong to you. This may be a little awkward, but we shouldn’t be praying for God to give us other people’s children, or someone else’s spouse. A selfish desire for things that do not belong to us only reaps trouble, discontentment and worse. Do not pray for wealth. By the world’s standards, you are rich. Luke 16:10-f is some good material from Jesus on the topic. Be faithful to God with what you do have as a responsible steward. I don’t have space here to include these, so please read 1 Timothy 6:6-11, 17-19. And remember the words of James, “You ask and do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, so that you may spend it on your pleasures” (James 4:3). What other things should God’s people not ask for? Clayton Johnson is the minister and evangelist for the Carbon Valley Church of Christ. Comments welcome at claypj@gmail.com
UCHealth Longs Peak Medical Center Open Health care providers are now caring for patients at Longmont’s newest health care facility - UCHealth Longs Peak Medical Center. The new, four-story medical center east of Longs Peak Hospital is home to a number of specialty services, including pulmonary care, women’s care, general surgery and cardiology. Many of these services were previously provided on the third floor of the hospital, and the move will free up patient bed areas to expand inpatient care in the hospital in the future. “This medical center project has been several years in the making and the result of thorough research into the growing health care needs of the communities we serve,” said Longs Peak Hospital President Lonnie Cramer. “Now with a full-service hospital, an ambulatory surgery center and an outpatient medical center, the Longs Peak Campus is providing comprehensive care for all ages.” Other outpatient services that are available at the medical center include laboratory services, physical therapy, speech therapy, occupational therapy, cardio-pulmonary rehabilitation and a full range of imaging and breast diagnostics services, including MRI, PET CT, 3D mammography, ultrasound and DEXA bone density scans. In addition, University of Colorado School of Medicine is providing radiation oncology services on the first floor. This suite includes a linear accelerator, which is a device that is used for external beam radiiation treatments, and a CT simulation scanner, which allows radiation oncologists to see the areas that need to be targeted and personalize treatments to individual patient needs. “We are excited to welcome patients into this new medical center that was carefully designed to be a comforting and calming space,” said Donna Lankford, UCHealth Medical Group’s vice president of clinic operations. “The vision for the medical center was to bring diagnostic care and specialty care together in one location to maximize convenience for our patients. We are thrilled this vision is now our reality.” The facility also features a coffee shop open to patients, visitors and staff. And more is yet to come in upcoming months. Later this summer, Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers Longmont, an independent oncology practice that has served the Longmont community for more than 25 years, will be caring for patients from a large space on the third floor of the building. This will include office visits and infusion services. In the fall, the UCHealth Refractory Depression Clinic, which offers electroconvulsive therapy, medication management and psychotherapy for patients with severe depression and other mental disorders, will be moving from the hospital to the medical center as well. “At UCHealth, not only are we are focused on delivering excellent care and an exceptional experience to our patients of today, we are also always planning on what we need to do to meet the community’s health care needs tomorrow,” Cramer said. “The medical center will play a big part in helping us care for our growing community for generations to come.”

Health&WELL BEING Alternative Medicine: Watermelon
3
Prompting Change
Watermelon is a Chinese herb! The red and white fruit, rind, seeds and juice all have a specific action on the body. Generally, watermelon cools the entire system and enters the Heart, Stomach and Urinary Bladder channels. The white part of the fruit next to the rind has the most cooling effect. In addition to eating watermelon because it’s delicious, here are a few more reasons to eat it and drink its juice: z Re-hydrates the body and prevents heat stroke z Reduces heat-induced puffiness and edema z Since the cooling nature of watermelon positively affects the Heart, and is high in lycopene and vitamin C, there is a calming effect, quelling anxiety and reducing blood pressure z Helps to move and digest food - we’ve all experienced the feeling of food “just sitting there” especially at the height of summer heat z Great for constipation, so avoid watermelon if experiencing loose stool or diarrhea (and call your acupuncturist!) z Promotes urination and helps to regulate the urinary bladder, it is a diuretic, so avoid watermelon if there is excessive or uncontrolled urination. Watermelon is best eaten at room temperature. Chinese medical theory suggests that all foods be eaten at room temperature, or cooked, since food is more easily digested when eaten closer to the temperature of our own system, 98.6. It is the inherent thermal temperature of foods that help to cool the system down during the heat of summer, not refrigeration! Weld County Stands Up Against Elder Abuse The Weld County Board of Commissioners proclaimed June 15, 2022, as Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The proclamation serves as a reminder we must raise awareness about abuse, neglect and exploitation of elders, not just on June 15, but every day. “The mistreatment of elders in our community diminishes all of us. Just as we have confronted and addressed the social issues of child abuse and domestic violence, we are also working diligently to address the issues of elder abuse,” explained Jamie Ulrich, Director of the Department of Human Services. “Weld County Adult Protective Services (APS) is committed to creating a stronger Weld County by mitigating risk and preventing elder abuse while preserving the dignity of older adults.” Elder abuse can be defined as “a single, or repeated act, or lack of appropriate action, occurring within any relationship where there is an expectation of trust which causes harm or distress to an older person.” Social, economic and psychological factors all play a role in elder abuse. A person may be at risk for elder abuse due to social isolation, lack of access to resources and support or physical and emotional dependence. Weld County APS staff and community partners, from the Greeley Police Department Birchwood Apartments,ColoradoHealthCareAllianceandNorthernColoradoMedicalCenter, wereinattendance and received thanks from the board for their commitment to standing up against elder abuse. “We work collaboratively with all of these individuals — these great people who
Is there something in your life you want to change? Do you have high blood pressure or do you want to improve your health and lose weight? What’s keeping you from making a positive change in your life? When you decide that you’re ready to make a change, not just try, but actually commit and take action, that is the first step in prompting change. How do you make the change? Willpower works for awhile, but most will revert back to what’s comfortable. This leads to changing your thinking/mindset of what you’re comfortable with. Retrain your brain to feel good about exercise, eating real, healthy food, and drinking water. Think about all the wonderful benefits you get when improving your health. Again, here is the formula of what works for most everyone that wants to improve their health and fitness goals. Change your…. 1. Mindset: The way you think controls your outcome. Believe you need to take care of yourself if you’re going to be there for others, and believe you’re
worth it. Believe 1999-2022 that success is possible no matter how many times you’ve failed before. 2. Nutrition: Work on eating real, healthy food most of the time. Work on increasing your water intake. 3. Fitness: Exercise 4-5 day per week, 3 days of strength training and some interval cardio. Aim to move more during your day with less sitting, and go for a walk. 4. Community: Surround yourself with people who are on the same path as you and have similar fitness goals. Find a workout buddy and bring a friend to one of my fitness classes in person or online. My classes are Interval/Strength Training on Mondays & Tuesdays at 8:30am, Weds at 7pm, and CoreFirst Training on Fridays at 8:30am. You’re capable of making changes in your life, and I look forward to being one of the people that come along side you to help you improve your health and meet your fitness goals. serve this community and we are glad that we have them as ‘back up’ so to speak. We couldn’t do what we do in investigations without them,” said Dennis Lobato, Sergeant with the Greeley Police Department. Each year, research indicates one in 10 older adults suffer abuse, while only one in 14 cases are ever reported to authorities. Experts believe elder abuse is significantly underreported because so many communities lack adequate adult protective resources needed. In Weld County, residents can utilize APS for reporting, education and prevention of elder abuse. APS provides education on the mistreatment and self-neglect of at-risk adults to the community at no cost. To schedule a training or learn more about education services, contact Dawn Simmons at (970) 400-6122 or email dsimmons@weldgov.com. APS encourages anyone concerned about the safety and well-being of any at-risk adult residing in Weld County to report it to local law enforcement or the Weld County Adult Protection Hotline at (970) 400-6700. Does My Loved One Need Memory Care?
Are you living with, or caring for someone who is experiencing memory loss, and wondering what resources are available for both you and your loved one? Perhaps you are considering a memory care community but need more information? There is a great deal of helpful information and free resources for families caring for people with dementia. Dementia is the category of disease under which Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia fall. The first step to understanding is education. Understanding the definition, as well as the path of physiology of the disease, can go a long way towards helping family members to have greater compassion for their loved one, and be better prepared for what’s ahead. Connecting with resources, support groups
and information is an essential part of the journey that will reduce stress and conflict, creating greater longevity for caregivers. Check out alz.org or dementiatogether.org for more information. When the needs of either the caregiver or the dementia sufferer increase, or safety becomes an issue, it may be time to consider a move to a care community. Not all people with memory loss need to be in memory care. Many can safely live in assisted living with additional support. Enlisting the help of a Senior Advisor can help you navigate the ins and outs and find a community that meets the needs of your loved one. Lindsay Adams is a Senior Advisor with Assisted Living Locators of N. Colorado. She offers a no-cost service to families looking for senior living and care. National Salute To Veteran Patients Week This was February 13, 2022 - February 19, 2022 but it is the first opportunity this publication has had space to share. What is it like to be a Veteran living in the Community Living Center (CLC) that is part of the Cheyenne VA Health Care System? What stories and history will you hear by listening to the honored Veterans staying there? Every year during National Salute to Veteran Patients week in February, our chapter has been able to visit the CLC and hear these stories. Our last visit was in February 2020 just before the pandemic. On a warm, sunny Valentine’s day of 2022 Bev King and Esther DeManche from the Carbon Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution had the opportunity to visit with Angelo, a veteran and the Volunteer Coordinator of the CLC and other services offered at the Cheyenne Health Care System. Because of covid restrictions we were not able to visit with the veterans. The Daughters honored veterans by donating 100 Pocket Stars to show appreciation and thanks for their service and almost 200 valentines. Angelo distributed these to veterans visiting the Medical Center as well as to the residents of the Community Living Center. We also presented playing cards, puzzles, games, dvds, and books to the veterans and staff as a contribution to their Center’s materials for recreational activities. In addition, included in the list of donations was food for their food bank, lap blankets, sweat pants, boxes of snacks, and six hand-crochet afghan blankets made by Bev King. The original Cheyenne facility was built in 1934 to care for World War I Veterans. In June 2019 the facility opened a new nursing wing as phase one of a two-phase expansion. The Cheyenne VA Community Living Center has 42 beds. The Carbon Valley Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution are proud of and inspired by our veterans. We are pleased to have had the opportunity to visit with Angelo and bring the many collected donations during our annual trip to the Cheyenne Medical Hospital and Community Living Center. If you are interested in adding to our donations to be delivered in February 2023, please contact Esther DeManche estherdemanche@ Above Right: Angelo show that we had 2 full carts of donated items. at amal.com or Bottom Photo: Bev King and myself, Esther DeManche, and Angelo

Motor home, camper, and recreational vehicle Safety Motor homes, campers, and recreational vehicles are used for living and traveling. Each year, fires in them cause deaths, injuries, and millions of dollars in damages. Fires can start in the kitchen. They can start in the engine area. Sometimes the fires are electrical. With a few simple safety tips you can help prevent these fires from happening. SAFETY TIPS • Install smoke alarms. Make sure they work. • Stay in the kitchen while you cook. Keep anything that can catch fire away from the stovetop. • Only use one heat-producing appliance plugged into a receptacle outlet at a time. Major appliances should be plugged directly into a wall receptacle outlet. • Refrigerators, furnaces, ovens and stovetops use propane. Check them for leaks. Keep an updated gas leak detector on board. • Have your propane system inspected to make sure it still works properly. • Know two ways out. Make sure windows open easily. • Have everyone practice the home fire escape plan. • Do not keep camping heaters and lanterns on while sleeping. • Before setting up a campfire, make sure it is allowed. • If campfires are allowed, they need to be at least 25 feet away from anything that can burn. • Have your vehicle serviced by a qualified mechanic. • Keep a portable fire extinguisher on board. Only adults who know how to operate it should use it. Only use it if the fire is small and can be contained. Make sure everyone else is leaving. Make sure someone is calling the fire department.
Carbon Monoxide Awareness Carbon monoxide (CO) is a gas. You cannot see it. You cannot taste it. You cannot smell it. CO poisoning can result from leaks in the exhaust. It can happen because of improper use of appliances. Sometimes CO comes from another vehicle. Make sure you have a working CO alarm.
FACT When the vehicle is used as a structure, the most common area for these fires to start is the kitchen or cooking area. This is followed by the engine area, running gear, or wheel area. Check for safety inside and outside of the vehicle.

THE CHOSEN’s Jonathan Roumie: ‘I Am Constantly Awestruck by the Providence of God’ By Movieguide® Contributor
THE CHOSEN Season 3 wrapped Part 1 earlier this month, with star Jonathan Roumie reflecting on the experience via Instagram. “While its true the last few weeks were some of the most challenging for me personally and professionally, I must say that what we shot was some of the most beautiful and historic filmmaking I’ve ever been a part of. Blood, sweat and literal tears were poured into our narrative and will no doubt continue in spades upon our return,” Roumie wrote. Roumie previously won Movieguide® Grace Prize for his portrayal of Jesus Christ in the popular series.
“I am constantly awestruck by the providence of God and His sneaky little plan for me personally. Four years ago, amidst the pangs of virtual penury, I would never have conceived that such a mystical feat was remotely possible. My prayer now is that this work withstands the test of time and outlives me,” Roumie continued. “Meanwhile, I’m tickled to have more than a few evidential embers of my days spent with this most special group of people, telling these Jesus stories which quietly and deeply change hearts open enough to be impacted.” Season 3 of THE CHOSEN does not officially have a release date, though this season is expected to include Jesus’ miracle of the Feeding of the 5000 in a groundbreaking scene that gathered extras from around the world. Last Christmas, THE CHOSEN released its first theatrical event, CHRISTMAS WITH THE CHOSEN: THE MESSENGERS: The special event earned $8 million on opening night. It included a new episode of THE CHOSEN called THE MESSENGER and performances from prominent Christian artists such as Phil Wickham, Maverick City Music, The Bonner Family, and many more. “We knew we had something special with this title,” Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Events, said in a recent press release. “We are grateful for the passionate fans of The Chosen and our exhibitor partners who accommodated demand by adding showtimes and locations. We are all partners on this journey to claim the #1 spot as Fathom’s best-selling event, ever!” In just the first 12 hours of availability, THE MESSENGERS recorded the fastest outof-the-gate sales with $1.5 million. “We don’t do this for the numbers, but these records indicate people will indeed go to the theater for a project they’re passionate about,” THE CHOSEN creator, writer, and director Dallas Jenkins said. “The enthusiastic comments from new and old fans give us confidence to do this again.” https://bit.ly/3HQiw8y

Life Choices Pregnancy Center was set on fire around 3 a.m. Saturday morning, June 25, 2022. After gaining access to our building, we were shocked to see extensive damage to the inside. As many have reported, the fire is currently under investigation by the authorities. We are devastated and stunned by this frightening act of vandalism. Life Choices has served Longmont and its surrounding communities for over 37 years. Our dedicated staff – including staff nurses and volunteers – works hard to provide hope, help and support for the women, men and families of our community. What we hope the perpetrators of this act understand is that an attack on Life Choices is ultimately not an attack on a political party. It is an attack on those who walk through our doors every day in need of diapers, pregnancy tests, limited ultrasounds, clothing, financial and parenting classes, support, and so much more. It is an attack on a place that is supposed to be safe for those in need. As one of our clients recently said: “... they helped me in every way, giving great encouragement and support along my path to becoming a mother. Seventeen years later, I am so immensely grateful that I chose to go there and receive help. My son would not be here without their support. … Prayers and an offer to volunteer where needed!” — Life Choices Medical Pregnancy Center Client (Facebook) What can you do? #1 Pray: Please continue to pray for our team, our leadership and our clients. #2 Give: You can contribute directly to our work and the needed renovations at lifechoices.org/donate #3 Serve: We’ll be looking for volunteers to help with a variety of needs. If you are interested in being added to the volunteer list, please email us at alexandra.r@lifechoices.org We have been overwhelmed by the outpouring of love and support we have received since this incident. We continue to pray for healing and peace for all. Although this is unsettling, we have an incredible, caring staff and volunteers that are committed to coming back and serving our community and surrounding areas. We have not lost hope because the love of God has been poured out through churches, friends, businesses and people we have never met before. We hold tightly to the following scripture at this time. “God is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Therefore, we will not fear.” (Psalms 46:1-2) With heartfelt appreciation to all our supporters.

Never Again? “A Moving Argument Against Anti-Semitism” NEVER AGAIN? is a documentary against Anti-Semitism. It tells stories of a Holocaust survivor and the transformation of an Anti-Semite from England. Irving Roth describes his experiences in the Jewish Holocaust during World War II. Kasim Hafeez is a speaker, writer and activist who tells how he was transformed from being a rabid Anti-Semite to one of the most vocal public defenders of Israel in the world. The movie also features many newsreel images and many interviews with several Israelis, American Jews and rabbis, and Pastor John Hagee, the co-founder of Christians United for Israel. NEVER AGAIN? takes viewers on a powerful journey exposing the evils of AntiSemitism. The movie’s emotional high points are when Irving Roth describes how he lost his brother during the Holocaust and when Kasim talks to an Israeli soldier about helping Syrian children injured during the civil war there. The movie argues for love overcoming hatred against specific ethnic and religious groups. NEVER AGAIN? also contends (with good reason) that keeping Israel as a Jewish state is vital to protecting Jews from AntiSemitic hatred and violence. www.movieguide.org
