119 Corridor. . .Farmland to Eclectic Development with Dyer Realty By Jan Sciacca
This is the first in a series of articles about the journey of development along Colorado Highway 119. Special gratitude is extended to Commercial Realtor Marvin Dyer of Dyer Real Estate for his candor and knowledge of the historical trail of commerce that resides along this section of unincorporated Weld County. 1992 it was customary for me to drive east on 3rd Avenue in Longmont to the two lane Highway 119 to take the trek from Longmont to the Del Camino McDonalds for a Happy Meal for my kids. Then we would continue north to the Berthoud Motorcycle Track for an afternoon of fun. The trip from Longmont to I-25 seemed to take forever because the road seemed so sparsely traveled. Soon after, this solitary looking road was widened to four lanes. Who would ever use these lanes I thought? The by-pass from Longmont’s Main Street and Ken Pratt Boulevard was not completed until 2003 so anyone coming into Longmont from the south or west had to find their way to 3rd Ave to eventually get to Highway 119 and then to I-25. I recently spent an afternoon with Marvin Dyer who helped me fill in the “rest of the story.” Marvin Dyer, a former banking professional, entered the commercial real estate world in the late 1980s. As I watched
In
the development sprout along Highway 119, one thing seemed to be constant year after year. That was Marvin Dyer’s real estate signs. I pondered what type of man keeps property owners content while waiting for just the right buyer? Other commercial developments post commercial agents’ signs in what seems to be a continual succession of agents but not the 119 properties. Dyer Real Estate signs have been a permanent fixture for more than two decades now. The way Marvin explains the development is that at one time the south side of Highway 119 was farmland. The Longmont City Council was in disagreement as to whether they should annex the land or leave it as farmland to provide an open space buffer to the town. They chose not to annex it. The farms were eventually sold to developers who only had to deal with Weld County during their building and approval process. One of the largest Weld County developments on the 119 Corridor is Vista Commercial Center, which consists of 77 lots on 80 acres. Of the original lots, only 12 remain. Marvin Dyer, a humble man, creates success for himself by building and creating relationships and helping others succeed by providing the right business location for them. He truly cares
about the businesses that find him and the businesses he finds. He has a knack of “getting to the heart” of what his prospect’s business is, why they are interested in the 119 Corridor, and learns enough about their finances that he feels confident in helping them locate in Vista Commercial Center or one of the other developments he represents – Milky Way Business Park, Meadowlark Business Park. Dyer Realty is a family business with Marvin and his wife Lois working side-by-side, as well as their daughter Deanna being equally active. The fourth member of the Dyer Realty team is Russ Stacey, a retired anesthesiologist who is also a licensed broker. He is one of six partners in the Vista Commercial Center and represents himself and his partners in the sale of the Vista lots. Amongst the developments that Marvin represents, there’s an eclectic representation of businesses. Some are known better nationally than locally. Hearing and seeing who’s locating in our communities is interesting and truly an “aha moment” as to the diversity of commerce in our “backyards.” Stay tuned next month for Part Two in this Series to learn more about these businesses.

Following the Plan and Now Celebrating 25 Years of Marriage!
B
lueprints, the Simeon Protocol, Financial Peace University, the Bible… each are tools to help us follow a plan. If we follow the instructions to the best of our ability, we end up with a well-built home, a healthier body, financial freedom, and best of all, a contented life. As chaotic as my life has been from my earliest memories, I have had some substantial periods of time of complete peace and contentment. Every one of those days were surrounded in prayer and kept going by faith. After having been married twice before and still wanting to be married, I made a commitment to “do it right” the next time I was in a relationship. The time did come when I was asked out on a date. I prayed and prayed before I ever committed to that first date. I’m so thankful I did. I sensed that God had given me His approval to date Mike so we planned the event. We had a wonderful time of conversation in a very relaxing setting on that first date in 1990. One plan I did follow correctly, was asking God, every step of the way, about my relationship with Mike. Looking back, those first prayers about dating Mike are probably what kept us married during the hardships. Why? Mike and I had dated only six months when Alisha, my nine-year-old daughter was hit by a car and died. Ten

months after, in 1991, Mike and I married. Mike did not marry the same person he had known and dated. I was different, a shell of a person really. Our marriage was wrought with tension, depression, friction, and sometimes hatred. I resented Mike’s “plain and simple” life while mine was tragic. We blended families and had so much “water under the bridge.” On top of that, we now had a statistic hanging over our heads; 75% of all married couples divorce after the loss of a child. Every time I wanted out of our marriage, God reminded me of earlier answers to prayers. God approved Mike; for friendship, for dating and for a mate. I used to beg God to let me out of the marriage but He would not. Praise God! On May 11, we celebrated 25 years of marriage. I am truly thankful that the Lord kept reminding me of His answers to my prayers. I knew, deep in my heart, I had made a commitment to God, not Mike. And even with the death of another one of my children in 2002, Mike and I continue to grow individually and relationally and our marriage is better than it has ever been. When I consider the instructions in my life for the various duties I perform, I can now can confidently say, “I am following the plan.” But it is an ongoing daily choice and one that affects many people.
I can tell you, the builders of our home did not follow the plan. The fireplace never worked properly, our roof leaked for lack of tar paper and our concrete steps sunk a foot because they did not use rebar. If I want daily success in all that I do: publishing the Consumer Report community papers, going to church, getting healthy, traveling safely, and all the other important parts of my life, then I must commit each situation to God. I don’t always follow God’s ways but God is always faithful to get me back on the right path.
The Bible says in Proverbs 3: 5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.” I am not unique. God wants to do that for each and every one of us. But He gives us the choice to accept Him or reject Him.

Letter to the Editor: Regarding Colleen Whitlow
I am endorsing Colleen Whitlow for State Representative for Colorado House of Representatives, District 63. I have known Colleen for several years through Rotary and through her extensive volunteer efforts throughout the community. She possesses the qualities of a leader and is an excellent role model for our community and youth. Colleen embodies integrity, expertise and commitment to service above self which are all qualities of an extraordinary leader. To illustrate, Colleen is currently on the Town of Mead’s Board of Trustees, created and manages the Town’s Farmers Market, sits on the Downtown Revitalization Committee, is President of Mead’s Chamber of Commerce, is Mead’s representative to the Denver Regional Council of Governments and volunteers at every Mead Rotary activity. She takes every challenge head on and I have yet to see her fail. She is a strong supporter of veterans and the military. Recently she participated and assisted in the Mead Rotary POW/MIA flag raising ceremony at Mead Ponds, attended the Veteran Stand Down and celebrated the Military Honor Flight. She is currently working with several area Rotary Clubs, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion to help bring the AVTT Traveling Vietnam Wall to Carbon Valley. Colleen Whitlow has the initiative, dedication and desire to make a difference for our region. Her attitude and drive will represent our district with honor, grace and integrity and will ensure the people’s interest will be protected. Vote Colleen Whitlow for State Representative, Colorado House of Representatives, District 63. Linda Martin, Mead, Colorado

As the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce President, Colleen always extends a warm welcome to visitors and residents alike. She is dedicated to advancing the general welfare and prosperity of the area, improving the business climate, advocating on behalf of our members and offering educational support through seminars, publications, and business planning and mentoring. Our organization is in its 12th year of supporting our members by promoting commerce in the Mead area. Colleen’s leadership in the organization is energetic! She will truly voice your concerns and represent your issues to the Legislature at the State Capital. The people of Colorado deserve a true leader like Colleen and we are putting our support behind her. Jay and Susan Stype, Longmont
Letter to the Editor: Regarding Colleen Whitlow
As a former State Representative, I have a different perspective on the office and why I support Colleen in her efforts. Commonly candidates are asked their position on X, Y or Z, usually social issues. From theanswers, they are tagged either liberal or conservative and wear that “brand” forever. I believe this process is both inaccurate and inappropriate. Legislators are asked to decide on literally hundreds of issues on an endless cycle of legislative action, community meetings, and constituent claims. Most are neither liberal nor conservative. So why Colleen? Because I’ve seen her and worked with her in numerous settings. She doesn’t miss meetings, is always on time, does the background fact gathering so that she is prepared, listens closely to comments, makes excellent suggestions and implements decisions promptly. Others may support Colleen because of her opinions on some issue(s). I support her because I respect the judgment she will bring to deciding those hundreds of issues. As my favorite philosopher, Larry the Cable Guy says, Colleen will “Git-R-Done.” Respectfully, Edward M. Bendelow, BENDELOW LAW OFFICE, LLC
“For all its uncertainty, we cannot flee the future.” ~Barbara Jordan.
rue, we cannot flee the uncertainty of our future, but we can look at the future with hope when we have battle tested, proven and trusted Conservative leadership guiding our State. We are facing an onslaught of attacks on our pocketbooks, families, and freedoms. But our House District 63 is a Conservative beacon in Colorado. That’s why I’m proud to be your Conservative Republican Representative of HD 63. For the past 10 years Republicans have been trying to get a bill passed to get repeat DUI offenders off the streets by establishing a felony charge after 3 offenses. Last year, though Democrats control the House, I passed that bill (HB1043). And, I’ve earned the Mothers Against Drunk Driver’s Legislator of the Year Award for the 2nd year in a row. I’ve fought against the Magazine Ban that ultimately renders more than 90% of magazines in Colorado illegal and cost us over 600 jobs and $85 MILLION in revenue, by sponsoring the Magazine Ban REPEAL (HB1151). During my service to you, I’ve sponsored nearly 20 bills and even more resolutions to honor, recognize and take care of our veteran heroes and their families. On the political battlefield known as the legislature, I am a seasoned veteran who’s fighting to secure our rights. And, we
don’t have time to waste. We’ve seen what happens when an untested novice gets into office without accountability to anyone. They’re quick to be sold out to liberal lobbyist and Denver special interest groups. Before you know it, we’ve lost everything. Democrats and liberals are already in control of the State House. Let’s keep our House District 63 in Conservative hands. Together, we can look to the future, certain that we’ve got a staunch Conservative Republican holding the line for conservative values. I’m your Republican Representative Lori Saine and it would be my honor to continue serving you as your Conservative Representative of HD63. --State Representative Lori Saine serves on the Agriculture, Livestock, and Natural Resources Committee and is the Ranking Member of the Local Government committee. Her website is www.lorisaine.net
Letter to the Editor: Regarding Lori Saine
It has been my privilege to work closely with Lori over the past few years on several legislative bills regarding water rights and water issues along the South Platte River drainage. Lori has gone above and beyond to represent her constituents in a responsible and appropriate manner. Lori has repeatedly demonstrated that she is a true leader and deserving of another term in the Colorado House of Representatives. Lori is not afraid to take on the difficult and critical issues affecting her district. She is diligent and responsive to her constituents working hard to meet the important issues head on even when her position is not the most popular course of action. I strongly support Lori’s reelection in 2016. Her past experience and strong work ethic will serve her district very well during the next term. Lori is the best choice for Colorado House District 63 in 2016, in my opinion. Respectfully submitted, Donald L Jones
Letter to the Editor: Regarding Lori Saine
Representative Lori Saine is not just an extraordinary representative she is also extraordinary individual with the highest integrity. Representative Saine is an incredible hard worker known to stay at the Capitol testifying on bills until 2:30 in the morning. Representative Saine works extremely hard and is very passionate about what she does. She’s been extremely conservative and her voting record will show that and she has help pass some of the most important legislation for farmers and all citizens of Colorado. Water issues along the front range are extremely complicated and controversial. Representative Saine has committed the time and effort to become very educated on water issues. She has attended workshops, tours and meeting after meeting. Water is crucial for the survival of agricultural along the front range and Representative Saine is willing to do what it takes to protect farmers water rights. I would give the Representative Saine an A+. Have a FARMtastic Day, Glen Fritzler
Letter to the Editor: Regarding Lori Saine
Rep. Lori Saine (HD#63): Champions the Victims of DUI Today, my son and I sat in the orthopedic surgeon’s office, looking over the x-rays of a knee damaged in a car accident 3 1/2 years ago when Geoff was hit by a repeat DUI offender. 3 1/2 years ago, Colorado was one of 4 states that did not have a felony DUI law on the books to protect the families of our state. Lori took the lead to support my family and other victims of DUI by pushing the Colorado legislators to finally approve the Felony DUI Bill (HB15-1043) which was signed into law last May. Please support the re-election of Rep. Lori Saine to Colorado House District#63. We need her to continue fighting for the families of Colorado! Sincerely, Geoff’s Mom...Deborah Grenzke
Letter to the Editor: Regarding Lori Saine
The judge wept when he sentenced the six time, repeat DUI offender. He said that his hands were tied by Colorado Law. The hit-and -run driver was back on our roads before my son had his first surgery. We were lucky. He survived. That’s when I contacted Lori Saine, State Representative for District 63. For eight years lobbyists blocked passage of a felony DUI law in Colorado. Lori took on the toughest lobbying groups in our State...and won! We’ll never know how many children, mothers and fathers are alive today because of Lori’s courage in fighting the establishment. Whom do you want protecting your family? I choose to re-elect Lori Saine for State Representative in District 63. Gary Grenzke, A Grateful Dad

Letter to the Editor: Regarding Colleen Whitlow
Every Facet of Life
I am writing this letter in support of Colleen Whitlow’s run for the Republican Party’s nominee to the office of State Representative for Colorado House District 63. I have known and been friends with Colleen for over 30 years and I could think of no individual that would do a better job of representing the people of District 63. She is a Colorado Native, a Veteran, a Christian and a Community Leader. I first met Colleen while stationed at Clark Air Force Base in the Philippines. Her passion for the military, her dedication to United States, and the devotion to her family were always amazing. Although as it always happens we received assignments to different bases in different parts of the world. We never gave up our friendship and Colleen became the godmother of my only daughter. Over the years, Colleen continues to give her life and spiritual guidance. I retired in Colorado after 20 years of active service and our friendship has grown even further. As a constitutional conservative I can assure you that Colleen believes in God, Family, the Constitution and the United States of America. She will represent this great state every day. She will ensure your voice is heard and she will not let people infringe on your rights. Colleen has the heart, soul and depth of experience to excel as a leader in our community and as a State Representative. Very Respectfully yours, Tana Hathaway, Air Force Master Sergeant (Retired) & William Hathaway, Air Force Master Sergeant (Retired)

Letter to the Editor: Regarding Colleen Whitlow
I am writing to support candidate Colleen Whitlow, who is seeking the Republican Party nomination to the office of the State Representative for Colorado House District 63. My name is Jim Whitlow, and Colleen is my wife of 25 wonderful years. She is a profound influence on my life, and I would like to share my viewpoint of a dedicated woman that balances ambition and career objectives with the support of our family and the community. Colleen is the foundation of our home and has supported and encouraged me in every aspect of my life. I am an Information Technology Executive in my commercial life, and continue to be active in the Air National Guard. As we say often in the military, “You cannot do this without the support of your family!” Whether it was a trip with my company or deployments with the military, Colleen has been the rock that has kept our family going, and has still found time for God, family, community and friends. She is the strength that allows me to help protect this great nation and the stability to ensure our family is spiritually and mentally prosperous. I believe that you will find some stark contrasts between Colleen and her opponent. Firstly, Collen is not motivated by the money or status or fame. She genuinely wants to fight for the rights of the citizens of this great district. She is a United States Air Force veteran, and she swore an oath to protect the constitution of the United States, and to defend this nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic. This is part of her foundation, which influences her decision making process. Also, she is deeply rooted in her belief in God and the role he plays every day in guiding her. Colleen believes that we must protect our citizens’ rights today, to preserve a future for our children and grandchildren, as the choices that we make today, will have a great impact on the future of our great nation. I hope I have given you a little insight into our family and what a great woman that is running as your voice at the State Capitol. I encourage each and every one of you to vote in this election, look under the surface at the integrity and character of the candidates, and be educated on who you are choosing to represent you. Sincerely, Jim Whitlow
Letter to the Editor: Regarding Colleen Whitlow
I am writing this letter in support of Colleen Whitlow’s run for the Republican Party’s nominee to the office of State Representative for Colorado House District 63. Colleen is a Colorado native that who has traveled and lived in many places, both in and out of the United States, as she served our great nation through military service. She has been a proud resident back in Colorado now for over 19 years. As a small business owner, I have personally witnessed her extensive experience in supervision, management, finances and community service. Colleen has always held the best interests of the community, regarding safety and the wellbeing of our residents as her first priority. I have also found Colleen to be very approachable, to be a great listener, and to be someone who bases her decision making process on facts, while insuring that which is best for our current and future residents of this community. Colleen has a depth of experience and a welcoming demeanor to excel as a leader in our community and as a State Representative. Thanking You! Respectfully, Sanju Beri
Ricky Orlando Motorcycle School Offers a Class for Everyone By Jan Sciacca
S
pring has sprung and many are “itching” to get a motorcycle, improve their cycle skills, or renew their long lost motorcycle passion and obtain their motorcycle license. Whatever one’s desire, Ricky Orlando of the area’s Ricky Orlando Motorcycle School can help. Ricky, who has been riding since he was 10 and racing since he was 19, has been actively training folks by offering various classes for the past 14 years. Ricky’s motorcycle school is conveniently located at the area’s IMI Sports Complex at 5074 Summit Blvd, which is also known as Weld Count Rd 8, Dacono. Ricky Orlando’s Motorcycle School has a MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation) class for everyone. The beginner class, which costs $275, is the most popular and is approved by the State of Colorado. It provides 2 days of training, which consists of 10 hours of “bike time” and 5 hours of classroom time. A written and riding test are conducted. When one passes, no further testing is needed for one’s motorcycle license. In Colorado, one can be issued a motorcycle driver’s permit at the age of 15, with full
endorsement occurring at the age of 18. If you’re an “empty nester” whose kids are gone and through the years you’ve let your license expire, Ricky offers a one-onone five hour refresher course for $275 that provides license certification. Other classes offered are for intermediate, advanced, dirt and/or dual sport riders. Ricky Orlando Motorcycle School provides a safe and comprehensive learning environment. The schools is a member of MSF and MOST (Motorcycle Safety Training). Although the classes are offered year round, spring and summer are the busiest times of the year for the school. For more information on the services offered, visit rickyorlando.com or contact Ricky at 303.666.6061 or at ricky@rickyorlando.com.

Frederick in Flight Takes to the Skies June 24-26
C
entennial Park (630 8th Street) will once again be filled with hot air, bright colors and folks having a great time at this year’s Frederick in Flight which will take place June 24-26th. There will be hot air balloon launches all three mornings of the event, with up to 30 balloons on Saturday and Sunday (weather permitting). With that many balloons taking to the skies, it’s a beautiful sight to see – but be ready to get up early since the balloons start to inflate around 6:00 a.m.! Saturday morning’s flights will also feature hot air balloon tethered rides with RE/ MAX Momentum and a Community Safety Day with the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District as well as face painting and fun swag giveaways. If you aren’t an early riser, be sure to join us for the new evening Glow
Party on Saturday, June 25th from 6:00 p.m.-10:00 p.m., taking place in Centennial Park to give the balloons enough room to inflate for an actual balloon glow (weather permitting) in addition to the basket candle-sticking. Don your best neon and glow attire and join us for a great night full of beer, cider, wine, food, and live music from crowd-favorite The Movers and Shakers! In addition to the general revelry happening, the Carbon Valley Relay for Life will be hosting their Silent Auction to raise money for the fight against cancer – they already have great prizes and items lined up, ready to bid on including a grand prize weekend getaway to Breckenridge. Find out more information about the morning flights and the Glow Party at www. FrederickCO.gov/FrederickinFlight.

Longmont’s Annual Garden Tour
T
here’s something for everyone in Longmont’s Annual Garden Tour. This year, one of our five select homes proves you don’t have to have a big yard to create a great garden, or get tomatoes into December. Enthusiasts of all ages will see how this can be enjoyed into our 80s and 90s! Meet lifelong gardeners, Dr. Kent Foutz, 87, and his wife and Master Gardener, Joan, who will be 85 after the June 10th and 11th tour dates. Kent says, “She grows all the visual appeal; pretty plants and flowers.” Joan replies, “If he can’t eat it, he won’t grow it.” The Foutz’s grew up gardening; both come from farming and ranching roots. Joan’s father loved flowers; by the ripe age of two, Joan knew all their botanical names. Kent fondly recalls his mother’s big garden outside the kitchen. Gardening brings the couple together for lots of discussions and enjoyment. Somehow, there are never enough tomatoes, and always too many cucumbers. Their hobby keeps them limber, sleeping at night, and fitting clothes they had in college! The Foutz’s newer home on Ridge Drive near the Rec. Center boasts celebrated smaller spaces and manageable containers. All designed for keeping things simple, enjoyable, and growing - in some cases, long after the first snows! You’ll have to join us to learn how readily this can be accomplished. We will share one Master Gardener tip here: “Plant” a few clearly visible strawberry rocks, painted red, in your strawberry patch, early before the first berries come. The birds will learn there’s nothing there to eat! Join us for The Longmont Symphony Orchestra Guild’s 39th Annual Festival of Flowers, June 10th and 11th from 9-3. For full details, like the Guild’s Facebook page, or visit www.longmontsymphony.org. Advance tickets $10, or $12 at the Gardens.

got a great lineup of local food trucks where you can tempt your taste buds, as well as live music that will make you want to get up and dance. Fun games and activities add to the evening before a movie on the big screen. We’re also grateful to our many sponsors this year as this event has certainly grown in popularity and our businesses are excited to be a part of it too. For the entire summer lineup for this series, visit www.firestoneco. gov/foodandflickfridays. Independence Day will be another fun celebration in our community as we heat things up for the 14th annual 4th at Firestone event on July 4. Beginning at 10 a.m. our parade is one of the largest in the region and is full of a variety of entries from local boy scout groups to antique firetrucks to classic cars. The day will highlight all types of music, free games and activities, great food trucks, vendors with all kinds of fun items, a classic car show, fireworks and more. Check out the entire lineup of events online at www.firestoneco.gov/4thatFirestone. Another fun activity we now have in Firestone is our Disc
Golf Course at Central Park. Located at 6670 Sable Avenue, the course features 18 holes of disc golf. We’ve already received a lot of fun comments about this course and people are really enjoying it. If you’re out there on the course, snap a picture and post it to our Town’s Facebook page. We’ve love to see you playing! The summer season will once again be full of projects throughout our community. We’re working on the addition of box culverts on Firestone Boulevard to help with flood mitigation, and we’ll soon be sealing several streets in Town. Street improvements on First Street in Historic Firestone will begin after our 4th at Firestone event in July. You can see a complete list on our website at www.firestoneco.gov. We appreciate your patience and cooperation as we make these improvements in our community. As always, I’m available to visit. Please contact me via email at psorensen@firestoneco.gov.
your help. The Town has purchased a share of Windy Gap water and now to use that water, we need 5% of all property owners in Frederick to sign an affidavit in order to be included in the Windy Gap service area. All you need to do is come into Town Hall and make sure to have all listed home- or landowners present to sign in front of a notary. This is an important addition to our water portfolio to ensure our community has an adequate water supply for the future, and we appreciate your help in securing it for us all. The Frederick farmers market is about to start its sixth season and we’re excited to move the market into Crist Park, so you can enjoy the shade trees as you shop. We’ve heard from the community that more produce selection at a farmer’s market would be appreciated and I’m please to tell you that there will be more produce vendors this season than ever before. We hope you’ll come out to support these new additions and take advantage of this great weekly community gathering to spend some time with your family and friends.
Another great opportunity to get to know your neighbors as well as your representatives on the Board of Trustees is the Community BBQ Tour, which will be stopping in neighborhood parks throughout Frederick every Wednesday at 6 p.m. starting in June through August 17th. Check out the full schedule and when we’ll be visiting a park near you at www.frederickco.gov/CommunityBBQTour. Mark your calendars for Frederick in Flight June 24-26th. Set your alarm and arrive early to see how this event has grown to include 30 hot air balloons taking off together at the break of dawn. We’ll also be hosting a new Balloon Glow Party Saturday evening in Crist Park where the wide open space will give us the chance of seeing the balloons glow at night. More details can be found at www. frederickco.gov/FrederickinFlight. As always, I am happy to come to your next group meeting, or schedule a one-on-one, if that’s of interest, just email me at tcarey@frederickco.gov.

I’m addressing this letter to all dog owners. Please, please keep your dogs on a leash when you are walking and clean up after them. You may know that your dog is peaceful and will not hurt or attack another dog; however, other dogs that are on a leash could attack your dog. We have two large dogs and walk them daily and always pick up after them. However, many of the people walking the trails are not picking up after them nor are they leashed. There are dog droppings on the sidewalks and paths. Disgusting and unsanitary. The city provides dog stations and disposal bags for your convenience. Please use them.

Face To Face Turns Six I’d never thought of myself as an entrepreneur, but there I was on June 1st, 2010, sitting on the floor of my “office” using a borrowed computer from my daughter to launch my new business, “Face to Face”. I had no idea if this business would work, but on the encouragement of a few key people that I trusted and respected, I decided I had to try. What’s the worst that could happen? I could fail. (According to Bloomberg, 8 out of 10 entrepreneurs who start businesses fail within the first 18 months.) But I might succeed. The possibility of succeeding and being my own boss was heady. I’d been writing copy for radio ads for years and found myself

laid off when the recession hit. While meeting with business owners for several years, I’d learned their marketing budgets and needs and that they needed help with social media. Would people trust me to write status updates for them on their business pages on Facebook? Could I be an Administrator on multiple pages and manage them all? What if I didn’t get enough business? What if I got too much to handle it myself? Find Face to F The Small Business Development Council (SBDC) was invaluable with helping me create a business plan, and I found Cheryl at Live Life Fully Coaching to be indispensible in executing my plans. After registering my business with the State of Colorado, I approached a few of my former clients from the radio station where I’d worked - and several of them hired me! This created my initial client base and then it grew from there. Six years later, I’m still here, plugging away. ello! My name is Diane Divadi and I am a vocal coach! The heart of my teaching is to ensure HEALTHY vocal technique with proper breath support, throat preparation and resonant placement- and in a fun and relaxed environment. I am an Associate Vocal Coach at www.thesongbirdtree.com, the voice teaching platform created and founded by International Vocal Coach Kerri Ho. The Songbird Tree’s mission is to help singers to flourish and to become the singers they were created to be with tons of encouragement, inspiration and healthy, effective vocal methods. Prior to working with Kerri, I had substantial voice training with Dr. L. Scott Martin of Denver and completed his Voice Teacher Training
Program in 2002. I came across The Songbirdtree in 2014 and quickly became intrigued with Kerri Ho’s methods and emphasis on healthy vocal technique. I immediately signed up for her Advanced Singing Program for Professional Singers & Emerging Vocal Coaches and then subsequently, at her invitation, entered her Associate Coach Training Program, which I completed in the summer of 2015. Since that time, I have been teaching students of all different backgrounds and levels of experience. Nothing is more exciting to me than my students’ progress and achievements! Lessons are available at my home and through Skype. Let’s get singing and find your true singing potential!

Firestone Resident, Charles Ciepiel: A Model of Worship in Action By Jan Sciacca
O
ur communities are full of inspirational and interesting people. One such person is Charles Ciepiel of Firestone. He’s a vibrant man with a compelling presence. He has an attentiveness that makes one stop and wonder what the world would be like, if more folks were like him. Charles is the Worship Pastor of New Creation Church in Longmont, recording artist and the keyboard player of a new band called Mountain City, which also consists of well-known area worship artists Dave and Tara Powers. Charles began his singing career by singing in bars at age 13. When he was 19, he left his hometown of Cleveland and headed for New York City to pursue the music business. As he fought to find his way in the competitive industry, he began to realize that he was surrounded by music enthusiasts who all seemed to be “strung-out or messed up.” Charles, at the age of 20, wondered if he could find anyone in the music business living a life worth emulating. As he looked at the chaos around him, he wondered if he could be different or if he would become just like the dysfunctional world that surrounded him. Then, as Charles declares, “God showed up and changed everything.” One day, as Charles was on his way to a record company appointment, he couldn’t help but stop and listen to a man preaching. There was always someone yelling about something on Times Square - but this man was different. Charles describes the man as “genuine and authentic. . . He had the love of Jesus that was shining through him. His eyes were very blue.” The preacher gave Charles a green Gideon’s bible, which started his faith journey. Charles eventually left his music industry quest behind him, became a youth pastor in Ohio, went to bible school, married his high school sweetheart Jenny and moved to Pensacola Florida where he attended and then taught at the Brownsville Revival School of Ministry. Along the way, and miraculously, 13 years after his lifechanging 15-minute experience in Times Square, he again met the man with the blue eyes and the love of Jesus. His name was Charles Simpson. What an example that “the seeds we plant do matter.” In 2011, Charles felt called to join the team at New Creation Church in Longmont. Charles says, “I want to see people give the Lord the worship He
deserves. My job is to stir hearts to respond to God’s goodness.” He continues that he believes worship is a response, like laughter is to a joke. If people don’t laugh at a joke, they either don’t “get it” or “didn’t hear it.” He believes the worship response to the Lord is the same. Music is God’s gift to Charles and he shares it with the world. Charles’ passion for music has taken him to 30 nations spreading the love of Jesus through music. To enjoy his music, one can visit iTunes to preview and purchase his albums, “Mr. Savior Man” and “Psalm 119”. In addition https://soundcloud.com/charlesciepiel contains an online collection of new tunes, rough drafts, old favorites, messages, etc. The recently formed band Mountain City writes and performs love songs. The band’s songs have a “Love is worth fighting for” theme. The group is on target with writing and producing one song a month. A generous donor stepped forward and offered $25,000, if matching funds could be raised, toward the $50,000 needed for the group’s first recording. Charles is proud to say, “Mission accomplished. God has provided.” Mountain City is known for their house concerts and is available for your special intimate event or large event. Call today for a free Market Analysis! Don’t Keep Family in the Dark About Your Plans
ou might work diligently at building a financial roadmap for your retirement years and a comprehensive estate plan. But you can’t just create these strategies – you also have to communicate them. Specifically, you need to inform your spouse and your grown children what you have in mind for the future – because the more they know, the fewer the surprises that await them down the road. Let’s start with your spouse. Ideally, of course, you and your spouse should have already communicated about your respective ideas for retirement and have come to an agreement on the big issues, such as when you both plan to retire, where you’ll live during retirement, and what you want to do s retirees (volunteer, travel, work part time and so on). But what you both might have let slip through the cracks are the important specifics related to financing your retirement. You’ll need to answer several questions, including these: • When will you each start taking Social Security?
• Are there strategies for maximizing both of your Social Security payments? • When will you need to start tapping into your respective retirement accounts, such as your IRA and 401(k)? And, once you do start withdrawing from these accounts, how much should you take out each year? You may want to work with a financial professional to address these issues, but however you proceed, you and your spouse need to be “on the same page” regarding the key financial components of your retirement. Now, consider your grown children. You need to clearly communicate your estate plans to them, not only for the sake of openness and honesty, but also because they may well play active roles within those plans. So when talking to your children, make sure you cover these areas: • Durable power of attorney – You may well decide to give one of your grown children the durable power of attorney to pay bills and make financial choices on your behalf if you are unable to do so. • Estate executor – An executor is the person or entity you name in your will to
carry out your wishes. An executor has a variety of responsibilities, so you’ll want to choose someone who is honest and capable of dealing with legal and financial matters. Again, you could ask a grown child to serve as your executor, but, to avoid potential conflict of interests among your children, you might want to go outside the family. Talk with an attorney about how best to name your executor. • Status of will and living trust – Assuming you have already drawn up a will, share it with your grown children. The same is true with a living trust, a popular estateplanning tool that may allow your survivors to avoid going through the time-consuming, public and expensive process of probate. A will and a living trust will obviously contain a great deal of information your children should know about – so take the time to explain your thinking when you created these documents.
You want to enjoy a comfortable retirement, and you want to leave a meaningful legacy through your estate plans. To help accomplish both these goals, you need to include your loved ones in your arrangements – so open those lines of communication.

Wall Colors and Artwork
A

sk most artists what color their work should be placed against and they will tell you their work can stand on its own. And this can be true. Regardless of how annoying the-art-must-match-the-room belief sounds, your art can have more impact when you choose the right colors to complement it. There are several ways to do this, depending upon the art itself. Repeating color from the art is the most common way to enhance it. This doesn’t mean you have to be matchie-matchie. Painting the wall behind a painting with a color from the piece itself - whether it be the least used color or same as the background color of the artwork - can increase the
impact. Or pick your favorite color in a painting and paint the wall behind it the same color but in a much darker shade. Black and white art is more enhanced by color and black and white photography especially, with vivid color. Vibrant art can be set off with bright color, but a soft color will work best to highlight it. Thus the same is true with softer art - a bright color will set it off as well. Contrast will always attract attention and your color wheel is a helpful tool here, showing complimentary colors. Is your artwork calm and serene? Choose a serene wall color to compliment it. A gallery wall that contains a variety of artwork can be given a cohesive look by painting the wall a dark color. Let a large, bold piece speak for itself with a monochromatic scheme by keeping your walls and furniture all in the same color family, allowing the artwork to be the main focal point of the room. This isn’t to say no to neutral, white, gray or black. Colorful artwork will stand out against any neutral from white to beige to neutral blues, greens, yellows etc.

Abkes Recognized by United Power for Assistance During Storm
U
nited Power representatives honored Firestone Public Works Director Theo Abkes at the May 11, 2016 Board of Trustees meeting for his assistance during a recent spring snowstorm. During a storm that hit the area on March 23, thousands of Firestone and regional residents lost power due to downed power lines in the area. In order to make the repairs, United Power crews needed access to County Road 28 to fix power lines. Acting quickly, Abkes bladed the road to allow crews to get in for repairs.
The next day, United Power posted on its Facebook page a special “thank you” to the Town of Firestone road grader operator “the tall guy with the mustache” who helped grade the road so crews could make repairs. Thanks United Power for recognizing our employee’s efforts!

M
ead High School is now in the 2nd year of playing tennis for the St Vrain School District. They have had over 30 girls try out each year, and have done very well representing MHS. They have been coached by Head Coach Dan McGlothlin, Assistant Coach John Schroeder, Volunteer Assistant Mridula Sugdahan, Mona Jones, Tim Vavla and Gloria Andrews.
Mead High School #2 Doubles in Tennis Goes To State
M
ead’s first ever tennis players to make state tournament are Sydney Boaz and Kylie Park. They had been planning all season as to how to get to the State Tournament after taking 4th in Regionals in 2015. They were ready; however, two week before Regionals, Boaz broke her left hand. Due to their competitive nature, they weren’t going to quit on their goal. Boaz figured out how to go from a 2 handed backhand to a 1 handed backhand, an amazing accomplishment. Park didn’t hesitate to step up and help here partner in covering more of the court when necessary. With this drive and determination, they won at #2 doubles against Windsor at 4A Regionals last week to qualify for State. They fell in their 1st match at State on Thursday against a very good Pueblo West team. It was a close and fun match to watch. Both girls played well during the tournaments and had a
very enjoyable experience at the State 4A Tournament in Pueblo, which was May 12 14. Boaz and Park first played tennis when Mead High School introduced this sport into their athletic program in 2015. Thanks to the coaching of Dan McGlothlin and his assistant, John, as well as others that have helped the last two years, Boaz and Park were able to fulfill their dream.
Town Of Mead Continues Focus On Strong Economic Development
I
n the last few years the Town of Mead has taken large steps to increase economic development in the area. Most recently, the Town of Mead Board has approved a new Urban Renewal Authority (URA) and assigned a board of commissioners to work on this vital component of economic development. Many times the development (or redevelopment) of areas can be very expensive and hard to accomplish, often requiring partnerships between local governments and the private sector. Currently it has been far easier and less expensive for a developer to build on undeveloped land at the fringe of a town and contribute to urban sprawl than to tackle the issues surrounding infill sites. By creating a URA, the Town of Mead can assist the private sector in revitalizing areas of the community. Mead Urban Renewal Authority (MURA) will be governed by a 10 member volunteer board (pictured above) including the Town Board of Trustees and 3 additional representatives. The three additional representatives include one from each entity: Weld County, St. Vrain Valley School District and the Mountain View Fire Protection District. The Authority works under a common vision dictated by the legally approved urban renewal plan. Another large benefit of working within a URA is that the State of Colorado provides urban renewal authorities with significant financing tools. The most effective tool is Tax Increment Financing (TIF), which is a vehicle where sales and property taxes may be leveraged to help finance such projects as infrastructure or environmental cleanup, or to provide the public improvements necessary for the development to occur. Letters to the Editor Letter to the Editor,
I am endorsing Colleen Whitlow for State Representative for Colorado House of Representatives, District 63.
To the Editor,
Representative Lori Saine is not just an extraordinary representative she is also extraordinary individual with the highest integrity. Representative Saine is an incredible hard worker known to stay at the Capitol testifying on bills until 2:30 in the morning. Representative Saine works extremely hard and is very passionate about what she does. She’s been extremely conservative and her voting record will show that and she has help pass some of the most important legislation for farmers and

Letter to the Editor in Support of the Re-election of Representative Lori Saine, Colorado House District 63 Dear Editor, It has been my privilege to work closely with Lori over the past few years on severa l legislative bills regarding water rights and water issues along the South Platte River drainage. Lori has gone above a nd beyond to represent her constituents in a responsible and appropriate ma nner. Her past experience a nd strong work ethic will serve her district very well during the next term. Lori is the best choice for Colorado House District 63 in 2016, in my opinion. Respectfully submitted, Donald L Jones

A LETTER FROM MAYOR GARY SHIELDS Marijuana Establishments and Urban Renewal Authority Dear Residents, This month I have two items that I want to bring to your attention. First and foremost, it is with great enthusiasm that I can let you know that on May 2nd, the town board approved the Mead Urban Renewal Authority. This has been a long term vision of mine that started more than two years ago. One of the main objectives that I have been working on as your Mayor has been to provide for the long term sustainability of our town. As you have seen in past articles, the town board and staff have been working on ways to attract commercial development to our high traffic corridors in order to capitalize on those passing thru our town to stop and leave their tax dollars. This has proven to be more than difficult at times given that we have never thought in this way and have had very little infrastructure to attract tax generating businesses to our area. Through the Mead Urban Renewal Authority (MURA), we now have that tool and can begin working along-side of development and decide on a case by case basis whether or not an infrastructure investment would be beneficial not only to the developer, but more specifically, to our town.
For me, the MURA is not only a great financial tool to our town, it is a measure of our relationships with other taxing jurisdictions. The reason for this is that it requires the cooperation and participation of the other taxing jurisdictions in order to be successful. For this reason, I want to thank the Weld County Commissioners, the St. Vrain Valley School District and the Mountain View Fire Protection District. Without their support, this effort would not have been possible. For clarification, the MURA is not an increase in tax or taxes to anyone. It is a tool that allows for the future assessed valuation of developed properties to pay back the infrastructure investments needed to attract development. It will be very exciting in the coming months to move forward in this process and begin working with value added commercial developments. I look forward to bringing you good news in future articles in this regard. On another note, I want to bring to your attention a very important matter that we are currently faced with and to allow you all the opportunity to have input into what direction we will take regarding marijuana establishments. For the past couple of months, this subject has been brought up at nearly every one of our meetings. My reply each time is that it would have to make a whole lot more sense than it
does dollars and that we would need a considerable amount of information from staff as well as community input in order to decide the right direction to take. Despite taking this position and without any substantial information provided by staff to date, a motion was brought forward at our April 25th meeting to have staff draft an ordinance allowing marijuana establishments in our town. This motion passed on a 4-3 vote and certainly appeared to me to be on the fast track for approval. Fortunately, I was able to ask that a work session be scheduled in this matter so that we can get as much relevant information as possible prior to making a final decision. For this reason, I would like to invite you to attend our work session on June 6th @ 6:00 pm so that you will be able to receive the same information as the town board will. Public comment will not be taken nor will any decisions be made at this meeting since it is a work session but it will certainly be a good idea to hear the information that will ultimately be considered in this matter. Your assistance is greatly appreciated and as always, if you should have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Gary R. Shields Mayor, Town of Mead, 970-535-4477
The Board of Trustees, Planning Commission and Committee meetings are all open to the public. Agendas for the meetings are posted and can be viewed on the Town website www.townofmead.org Deadline for Every Issue of the MCR is the 15th of Each Month. Late??? Try Anyway!
ELECT - Colleen Whitlow Republican Party Nomination State Representative for House District 63
I
am Colleen Whitlow and I am pursuing the Republican Party’s nomination to the office of State Representative for Colorado House of Representatives District 63. I am a Colorado native, a lifelong Republican and I have lived in District 63 since 1999. I am currently a Town of Mead Trustee and serve on several volunteer boards and committees. • Director - Denver Regional Council of Governments • President - Mead Area Chamber of Commerce • Acting President - Colorado Women In Government • Member - Colorado Women Leading Government • Member - Town of Mead Downtown Revitalization Committee • Board Member - Mead Rotary Foundation • Member - Rotary Club of Mead • President - Singletree Ranch Home Owners Association
The people of Mead salute the veterans of Northern Colorado (including 3 vets from Mead) as they travel to Denver for the Honor Flight to Washington DC this morning.
“For all its uncertainty, we cannot flee the future.” – Barbara Jordan
T
rue, we cannot flee the uncertainty of our future, but we can look at the future with hope when we have battle tested, proven and trusted Conservative leadership guiding our State. And, we don’t have time to waste. — State Representative Lori Saine serves on the Agriculture, Livestock, and Natural Resources Committee and is the Ranking Member of the Local Government committee. Her website is www.lorisaine.net
I also am a military veteran who served this country for over 10 years. I was stationed at Clark Air Force Base during the Marcos and Aquino era before the volcano from Mt. Pinatubo erupted that forced over 15,000 people to flee before it destroyed the base. I was also stationed at Langley Air Force Base and during my assignment was heavily engaged in Operation Desert Shield/Storm. I graduated from Saint Leo University with a Bachelor of Arts (BA) in Business Administration and Management, Minor in Management and am a member of the Delta Epsilon Sigma National Scholastic Honor Society and the Kappa Gamma PI Society. In 2014, I was elected to serve the Town of Mead as a Trustee. Prior to that, I worked at Janus Consulting Inc. as the Chief Operations Officer and at IBM as a Project Manager on the team supporting the local, state and federal bids. I am a Christian committed to the timeless and eternal principles that honor the God who created us equal and which make for a good life and thriving communities. I am a member of a local church where my family worships. I have been married to my husband Jim for 25 years. Jim works at CSC as a Senior Transition Executive and is also the Command Chief Master Sergeant of the Colorado Air National Guard. We have two children, Joshua and Tiffani and three beautiful granddaughters, Norah, Bella and Harper. Our family enjoys taking advantage of the great opportunities that Colorado offers. We love to be outdoors to go hiking, biking, camping, fish, hunting, and snowshoeing. Colleen Whitlow www.colleenwhitlowhd63.com

Frederick’s Karen Cade Sculpting Life-size Buffalo
F
rederick Artist, Karen Cade will be working on two buffalo sculptures for the Custer South Dakota Buffalo Stampede Art Auction. The first, Time to Rest, will be an original hand sculpted life-sized buffalo, measuring approximately 6 feet tall x 6 feet long x 40 inches wide. The material used will consist of Forton MG, Aqua Resin, and Epoxy Clay. Metal paint will be used as the finish to simulate a bronze sculpture. The second sculpture will be a smaller version of the life-sized buffalo, sculpted in clay and cast as a bronze sculpture. After completing her art education at Cal State Fullerton, Karen returned to Colorado with her husband Paul to surround herself in the grandeur of the Rockies. Karen’s work has been accepted in many local and national art shows. She currently works in her art studio and frequently finds herself working on commissioned portraits. This is Karen’s 10th year participating in the Custer Stampede Buffalo Art Auction.

The Heart of Jo Ann’s Kitchen What’s in YOUR Meat?
O
nce upon a time at a roadside stop in a state to the north of us, I elected to order a healthy choice – a buffalo burger. It was a TAD overdone. SO overdone that I couldn’t get my teeth through it. It was the first and last time I tried buffalo and that was many moons ago. Now, I work promoting a store that sells premium bison products, and I develop recipes for bison and other meats. Oh, the complete irony. I remember the day my husband said I would need to learn to eat, cook and enjoy bison. I said, “YUM!” in a highly sarcastic tone and sighed. But, like all things new, I embraced the experience to discover that bison is one of the best meat choices on the market. It needs thoughtful preparation and conscientious cooking – but it will deliver in both taste and tenderness if treated well. Bison loves low and slow cooking. Slow cooking a premium bison cut will help tenderize this lean meat, and will aid in developing its own natural flavors. (IMHCO – in my humble cook’s opinion!) What, you ask, is the difference between bison and buffalo? Bison is the term typically used for North American buffalo. You might say that bison is the original American red meat! Some facts about bison and its nutritional value as a primary protein source: 1. Bison has about 1/10 the fat of beef, ounce for ounce. 2. Bison has approximately one half the calories of beef. 3. Bison is higher in protein than beef, chicken or fish. 4. Bison has lower cholesterol than beef. 5. Bison has more iron and vitamin B-12 than other proteins. 6. Bison contains essential fatty acids (omega 3’s and 6’s) and minerals such as zinc and selenium not found in other meats. According to the National Bison Association, “Bison are handled as little as possible. They spend their lives on grass, much as they always have, with very little time in the feedlot. They are not subjected to questionable drugs, chemicals or hormones. The members of the NBA feel so strongly about this that they have
a resolution opposing the use of these substances in the production of Bison for meat.” (excerpt from www.bisoncentral. com under Health) Here is a simple, all day recipe, designed to get you out of the door in the morning and anticipating the taste all day long.
Easy 3-Ingredient Bison Short Ribs • 3 - 4 lbs. bison short ribs (can also be made with beef short ribs) • 1 - 18 oz. bottle of your favorite BBQ Sauce (if you are concerned about corn syrup products, many brands are available sans the corn syrup – pick a heart, smoky flavor like hickory that will stand up to all day cooking and read the labels carefully) • Rib Rub (my favorite is Emeril’s Rib Rub, but I have made my own as well) Directions: 1. Rub short ribs generously with rib rub. 2. Sear seasoned ribs in a large hot skillet to brown and seal in juices. 3. Place in a slow cooker (for easy cleanup use a slow cooker liner). 4. Pour bottle of favorite sauce over the ribs and coat thoroughly. 5. Cook short ribs for 8 hours on low. (If you have a digital cooker that will automatically turn the pot to warm at the end of the cooking cycle, even better.) 6. Serve over mashed cauliflower or mashed potatoes with a simple green salad on the side.

Firestone Chiropractic Relocating July First
F
irestone Chiropractic is very happy to announce that as of July 1, their new location is 8310 Colorado Blvd. #700, in Firestone. The new office space is in the professional office building just north of Ace hardware. Dr. Casey Scherr spent the last 5 years investing in the Carbon Valley, while growing a great practice with the best patients in the world. Dr. Casey loves practicing in Firestone, especially since he and his family live here too. Because of his growing roots in the community, he worked diligently to find the perfect location in the Carbon Valley. Dr. Casey says, “At Firestone chiropractic we are most concerned with getting our patients healthy, faster. We take the approach of looking for the cause to your symptoms instead of just treating the symptoms. This approach is what most chiropractors call “wellness care.” It can be simple adjustments or manipulation or as complex as life style modification. We treat all ages, as young as few minutes old [both of Dr. Casey’s baby girls] to well in to your 90’s.” For too long, society has looked at health care as a pain management system. We only go to the doctor if something hurts or we feel sick, with the exception of maybe an annual physical. However, this

system never addresses the underlying dysfunction that is occurring in the body. Because of this, the United States ranks among the top 5 for highest rate of chronic, degenerative diseases. The purpose of chiropractic care is to optimize health, whether it is to restore function after a car accident or relieve pressure created from bad posture working 5 days a week at a desk. Because chiropractic treatments are primarily applied to the spinal region, many individuals incorrectly assume that chiropractors treat only back and neck ailments. While we do quickly and effectively eliminate back pain and neck pain, it’s not the only goal. In fact, we also treat extremities such as hands, wrists, elbows, shoulders, feet, ankles, knees and hips, and work with patients on life style modification because diets always fail. Dr. Casey and his staff will always be focused on creating a better and healthier Carbon Valley. If you would like to ask Dr. Casey if he can help with issues such as poor circulation in your hands or a stiff shoulder that irritates you, call 303.485.1922.
ere in Colorado we move a lot of mountains- mostly using dynamite and heavy equipment. Whether for building roads or new developments or another dam to keep that precious resource called water available, we know how to move mountains. But when it comes to our personal lives, be it our marriages, raising children, keeping a job, or having trouble with our cars, we aren’t always so good at moving the “mountains” required. The resulting chaos leaves plenty of divorce, rebellious kids, unemployment, and roadside stalled vehicles for us to deal with. Is there any cure for the common ailments of life? Who can we turn to for help with these nagging difficulties? Enter a modern day Superhero! He is dynamic and powerful and NOT a cartoon. A few movies have been make about him, but it is not generally well-known that he can actually assist YOU in dealing with your personal dilemmas. His name is Jesus, and He is just as accessible today as He was in the days he walked the roads of Palestine. Many of you understand this, and some are wondering how that is even possible. Read on for a prescription you can take to the bank for permanent relief of life’s many potholes. The pages of the Bible record the life and teachings of Jesus of Nazareth, a first century miracle worker. Well-documented are His many exploits in dealing with human misery and the challenges of life, especially in the four Gospel accounts (Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John in the New Testament). If the Bible would be a new book to you, start in the Gospel of John for a look at the specific words and actions of Jesus and many memorable speeches He made dealing with life here on Planet Earth. He even discusses the afterlife, so it’s like getting a two-for-one deal when you tie in with Him- abundant life here and now, and an unimaginable future! He talks about love a lot, and tells us that the Father loves everybody greatly (John 3:16). He also talks of the importance of believing the right things. One special sentence is found in John 5:24 where He says “Truly, truly I say to you, he who hears My word, and believes Him who sent Me, has eternal life, and does not come into judgement, but has passed out of death into life.” Sounds like believing the right things is very important, wouldn’t you agree?
In John 6:35 we read the encouraging words “I am the bread of life; he who comes to Me shall not hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.” And you don’t even need food stamps to obtain these valuable real life delights! In John 8:36 He says “If therefore the Son shall make you free, you shall be free indeed.” Pretty hard to beat that assessment for life. Covering the topic of death (which is a certainty for approximately one out of every one), He says “I am the resurrection and the life; he who believes in Me shall live even if he dies, and everyone who lives and believes in Me shall never die…” (John 11:25,26) In 12:46 He tells us “I have come as light into the world, that everyone who believes in Me may not remain in darkness.” What a good thing that would be, to keep us from tripping over our own feet sometimes when it seems the lights have gone out and all is gloom and despair in our lives. When He was being questioned by Pilate on trial for His life, He answered Pilates’ question about Him being a king by saying “You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice.” This superhero Jesus claims to be able to supply our needs for earth and heaven. He claims to BE the truth and speak the truth. He says if we are “of the truth” we will listen to what He tells us. I learned 46 years ago the veracity of Jesus’ claims, and have been His follower ever since. He has never disappointed menot for a day. Though I have at times been disappointing to Him by not following His instructions, I have known a life of joy and happiness I did not deserve, with a loving family and a lifetime of adventures. Thanks be to God for His remarkable gift to us of a Savior who also is my Superhero. Only this superhero is not a figment of Hollywood’s imagination. He was born of a mother like we were, ate and slept and worked like we do, and died a painful death so we would not have to face God the Father on our own merits. May I encourage you to consider the claims of Christ for yourself. Millions have preceded you in finding new life in Jesus, but there is room in His family for more. Give Him a chance to redeem your life forever, by starting over under His management, especially if running your own show hasn’t turned out as you desired. He is all about delivering us from our heaps of ruins created by errors made in the past. And today is a good day to start. You surely will never do it any younger! I was 23, my dad was 88, and some let Him into their lives as kids. Don’t wait another day- read all about Him and give Him a chance to change your life for the better, and soon you will be moving mountains out of your way and enjoying a new peace and joy. Learn more of our Redeemer and Lord at Abundant Life Church.
Jim pastors Abundant Life Church, which meets at 10:00 am Sundays at 4380 Highway 66, just 3/10 mile east of I25 on the south side under the green banner reading “Enjoy life to the MAX”. Come worship with us.

Healthy Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture
Step up
Acupuncture
O
ver the years I have been asked many questions about acupuncture, such as, how does acupuncture work? are you putting needles into nerves? do I have to believe in it? Well, how does acupuncture work? I honestly don’t think anyone truly understands... Let’s begin somewhere near the beginning, but please understand that this information is a drop of dew on top of an ocean. Most of the acupuncture points are located along channels, or meridians, that are named after (and functionally relate to) internal organs. The acupuncture points then, have an action that influences that organ AND how it relates to the other organs. Incredibly, the Chinese people figured out the general functions of the internal organs thousands of years before autopsy or modern technology. These functions actually match what we know about the organs today. Chinese medicine itself is rooted in how the system works together, (rather than singling out one part, “the gallbladder in room 205”), and also takes into consideration an individual’s health, history, eating habits, and the climate and conditions in which they live. Acupuncture encourages the proper flow of blood and qi (there are many types of qi, pronounced “chee”). In a nutshell, qi involves the energy required in any
transformative process. You could think of an acupuncturist as an electrician... some of the wires are crossed and possibly causing sparks, and these over here are not connected at all. Essentially, it is our job to make sure that each person is working at full power and with proper illumination. What we do know is that acupuncture does a great job of regulating the system. All of the systems in the body can become disrupted or ‘get tired’ of working properly after enduring anything from a mild stressor to a traumatic event such as a car accident or the loss of a loved one. Two of the most important pieces of information that I’d like everyone to know is that the needles are inserted into muscle, or superficially into the skin (not into nerves!). The sensation people often feel after the needle is placed is a dull, heavy or achey feeling. And it even works for animals. You cannot convince a horse that acupuncture works, it just works. The wonderful thing about acupuncture is that it is a time tested, effective and non-invasive method of treating health concerns, and without side effects! UCHealth Breaks Ground on New Longmont Hospital
UCH
ealth officially broke ground recently on a new hospital that will help meet the needs of a growing area of the state and provide new, high-quality services for patients. Spanning more than 212,000 square feet, UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital and an ambulatory surgery center on the northwest corner of Colo. 119 and County Line Road will contain 53 inpatient beds with room to expand to more than 100. “Today, we are surrounded by dirt and cranes. But with the help of this fine crew and hundreds of others who will have a hand in building this legacy, in about one year, we’ll be standing here amid a state-of-the-art facility designed for efficiency, safety, convenience and comfort,” said Dan Robinson, CEO of UCHealth Longs Peak Hospital. When the full-service hospital opens in 2017, it will feature an intensive care unit, a Level III trauma center and emergency department, operating rooms, advanced cardiac services and a surgery center. In addition, UCHealth will be offering several services that are new to the Longmont area, including an enhanced birthing center that will be able to care for babies born at 32 weeks, bariatric surgery, less-invasive sinus surgeries, endoscopic ultrasound to diagnose gastrointestinal and lung diseases, advanced neurological care, advanced orthopedic surgeries, vascular surgery and advanced telehealth services. “This area of our state is growing rapidly, and we’re proud to bring a new hospital to the area to serve patients,” said UCHealth President and CEO Elizabeth Concordia. “We’re extending the proud, 110-year tradition of the Longmont Clinic and putting patients first. This new medical center will provide advanced care, close to home, while also ensuring an excellent patient experience.” The construction
of the hospital is expected to generate approximately 500 construction jobs. More than 250 new, permanent jobs will be created when the hospital opens next year. An estimated $1.2 million will be spent in Longmont on construction materials and services related to the hospital project in addition to nearly $30 million in total construction job payroll and benefits, according to Jessica Erickson, CEO of Longmont Economic Development Partnership. Once the hospital is up and running, she added, its annual payroll will be over $13 million and the indirect local economic impact will be more than $4 million in additional annual local spending. “We’re already seeing evidence of this in increased interest and development activity in the surrounding area of the hospital that promises to bring more jobs, more amenities, more services and more housing that is in great need here in Longmont,” Erickson said at the May 18 groundbreaking ceremony. Haselden Construction is the general contractor on the project and is supported by Affiliated Engineers Inc., BHA Design, Inc., JVA Consulting Engineers and Project One Integrated Services and WHR Architects. The new hospital’s architecture will convey a memorable brand identity with a timeless character, according to WHR Architects’ lead designer on the project, Tushar Gupta. “WHR’s design team is proud to collaborate with UCHealth to create an innovative, welcoming, and healing environment for the community,” he said.

What Motivates You?
W
hat is it about sticking with a fitness routine that causes so many people to give up? Motivation...or your “WHY”. It’s human psychology that if we want something bad enough, we’ll do everything we can to get it. Your challenge is to find out what motivates you personally to get serious about fitness and stick with it. You can stay committed and finish strong. Here are some possible motivators for you: 1. For your health - Consistent exercise and healthy eating are the two best things you can do for your health. You’ll develop a strong, healthy brain and heart, reduce your chances of many cancers, stroke, and diabetes, and limit many of the common ailments that come with aging. 2. To relieve stress - Exercising does cause physical changes in your brain and nervous system that result in feelings of calmness and well-being to help reduce stress overall. 3. To be strong - Once you add strength training in to your fitness routine, you’ll feel much stronger even after a few weeks. By getting strong now, you reduce your risk of age-related falls and fractures because you have the balance and core strength to keep yourself more stable. 4. To look better - Appearance isn’t everything, but most of us care how we look. You’ll develop the confidence that comes from the discipline of fitness, and you’ll feel more energetic, which will get you up and moving.
At Time For Change Personal Training and Fitness Group we just finished a 6 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge. The winner is Sandy Hughes from Longmont (pictured below) who lost 8.8lbs and lost 3.25 inches overall. She had this success by eating healthy, walking, and attending my fitness groups 2-3 times per week. She is staying consistent and found her why to get healthy. It’s worth taking the time to discover the powerful motivators in your life. Do what it takes to get yourself moving and makes it worth it, your health and life is at stake. Over the summer months I offer 4 Fitness Groups per week in Frederick and Niwot, and Mobile Personal Training where I come to your home and create personalized programs for you. If it’s time for change in your life, contact Tracy Rewerts, NASM Certified Personal Trainer, Fitness Nutrition Specialist, and Women’s Fitness Specialist at TimeForChangePersonalTraining. com or 303-828-2856.

St. Brigit Episcopal Church Strives To Serve Community
A
lthough just seven years old, St. Brigit Episcopal Church, Frederick, has already impacted the Carbon Valley in many positive ways. The church facilitates two nonprofit organizations that serve the community, Brigit’s Bounty Giving Garden and Brigit’s Village. Brigit’s Bounty provides fresh vegetables to those in need; Brigit’s Village is developing muchneeded housing for seniors. St. Brigit has been active in the Carbon Valley Network, a southwestern Weld County gathering place for human services providers, and helped found the Carbon Valley Help Center, which pro-vides food and resource assistance to those in need. All this activity aligns St. Brigit with its namesake, Brigid of Kildare, a 5th Century Celtic Christian who knew St. Patrick of Ireland and had special concern for evangelism, community, and serving the poor. Founded in 2009, St. Brigit is located on 7+ acres of land in downtown Frederick north of Tipple Parkway between Johnson and Oak Streets. In 2013 the congregation completed construction of a sanctuary that seats 150 people. In addition to Brigit’s Bounty and Brigit’s Village, the campus also includes an outdoor labyrinth and other prayer spaces, all of which are open to the public year-round. The church strives to serve the community and hopes that its campus will develop into a commu-nity center. Annual outreach programs have included food drives, free health fairs, free community meals, and Help Portrait, an event which offers professional photographs to families and indi-viduals at no charge. In addition to regular Sunday morning worship at 9:30am, St. Brigit
also offers alternative worship settings, including A’it Caol, which translates as “A Thin Place” in Gaelic. These quarterly services celebrate the Summer and Winter Solstice and Spring and Fall Equinox in keeping with the Celtic tradition of seeing nature as God’s creation, giving us insights into who God is. Each ser-vice includes a contemporary liturgy, special meditation areas for reflecting Hebrew and Christian scripture, and thoughtful, contemplative and upbeat music. The next A’it Caol service will cele-brate the Summer Solstice on June 20 at 7:00p.m. St. Brigit also offers a contemplative prayer experience, called Brigit’s Well, each Wednesday at noon. The church hosts robust adult spiritual formation opportunities, inviting others to grow in Christ-likeness. The Lent 2016 offering focused on some of the most prominent Christian teachers of our day, including Nadia Boltz-Webber, Brian McLaren, Lauren Winner and Shane Hipps. Children and youth are a very important part of the St. Brigit community. Programming for all ag-es from preschool through high school is offered during Sunday morning worship. St. Brigit’s Lightsiderz Youth Group is planning a mission trip to serve in Guatemala in 2017. Called by God the Father to live Christ-centered lives empowered by the Holy Spirit, the commu-nity of St. Brigit seeks to welcome ALL and provide a safe, compassionate and respectful place to be on the Christian spiritual journey. St. Brigit is located at 110 Johnson Street in Frederick. For more details, please visit www.stbrigit.org or call 720-208-0280.

Colt Edward Sewolt St. Brigit Episcopal Church to Celebrate Summer Solstice
S
t. Brigit Episcopal Church will welcome Summer with a Solstice Celebration on Monday, June 20, 2016, at 7:00p.m. The Summer Solstice Service is part of St. Brigit’s A’it Caol series, now entering its fifth year. A’it Caol (pronounced atch qweel) is Gaelic for “A Thin Place.” These services are created to offer guests an experience of God through a unique liturgy, which combines ancient tradition with contemporary language. They include specially designed meditation areas, reflecting the Scriptural lessons, and sacred music with an ethereal sound. In keeping with the Celtic tradition of honoring the earth as God’s creation, St. Brigit will mark the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, as a celebration of God’s gift of light. The Solstice Service is unique among the A’it Caol services in that all the meditation areas will be outdoors on the church grounds, including one
utilizing St. Brigit’s outdoor labyrinth. St. Brigit’s youth group, the Lightsiderz, will be assisting in creating the meditation areas. Older children are welcome at the service. Childcare will be provided for children under age six. Solstice is derived from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). This reflects the belief of ancient people that the sun revolved around the earth. The Celts celebrated the Summer Solstice by building bonfires on hilltops. This tradition continues in modern-day Ireland. In Celtic Christianity the Summer Solstice came to be associated with St. John’s Day, honoring the birthday of John the Baptist, who was born six months before Jesus. St. Brigit Episcopal Church is located at 110 Johnson Street in Frederick. Visit www.stbrigit.org or www.facebook.com/ StBrigit for more information.

Nextera.” The monthly membership of $99 per person, $149 per couple and $39 per child (child must have one adult as a member) gives one acute care and chronic disease management, allergy testing and treatment, bioidentical hormone replacement therapy, dermatology, mental health, school, sports and workplace physicals, sleep hygiene assessments and support, stress management, treatment of sprains, laceration and broken bones, weight management and health risk assessment, women’s health, well checks for infants and children, preventive health care, and same day appointments or nextday appointments, based on medical need. New offerings by Nextera are an inhouse pharmacy, full vaccinations, virtual specialty care and a virtual doctor. While the majority of primary care services are included in the Nextera Healthcare membership, additional costs may be incurred for lab work, medical imaging, surgery, specialist care, emergency department visits and hospitalization. For this reason, patients are generally best served by combining their Nextera membership with a highdeductible insurance plan or a medical sharing co-op like Liberty Direct. I met with Dr. Flanagan last month after being frustrated and disappointed with my insurance plan that was in compliance with the Affordable Care Act, more commonly known as Obamacare. Like most people, I wanted to know how I can have a program that would cover me in the way I hoped, at an affordable price and one that was in compliance with Obamacare. Liberty Direct is the plan that I opted for, along with my Nextera plan. As an individual, it saves me in excess of $150 per month and lowers my out-of-pocket expense on any eligible medical incident to $500* instead of the $6850 I had previously. Respective savings are available to couples

Much of the Carbon Valley is familiar with North Vista Medical Center but not everyone is aware that the medical practice is also the “hub” location for Nextera, a direct primary care membership program, founded in 2011 by physician Dr. Clint Flanagan. Nextera was the first direct primary care membership program of its kind in the country. Dr. Flanagan was one of the first doctors in the Carbon Valley area when he opened in Frederick’s Miners Square in 2003. As time passed and his practice grew, he became convinced that the traditional fee-based service was getting in the way of the primary care for his clients. As the trend continued toward universal health care, he saw his clients having less choice and more cost. Although he hired a design firm to come up with a name for his membership model, it was his wife Deidre who created the Nextera name that has become a household word for so many. Dr. Flanagan refers to employees as team members and says, “It’s important to have a team understand one vision and mission to move us forward.” Since Nextera was launched, thousands have joined the program along Colorado’s Front Range. The home or “hub” is in Frederick, with satellite offices in Longmont and Boulder. A second Longmont satellite is opening very soon and Lafayette will have its satellite office this summer. Denver and Fort Collins satellite offices are being planned and will be operated by physicians in the Nextera Affiliate Providers, a concept created by Dr. Flanagan. Dr. Flanagan, a national renowned expert in the direct primary care industry, has appeared in various government venues attesting to the benefits of direct primary care memberships. Dr. Flanagan says, “90% of the medical services one needs, are provided by

Healing After The Loss
W
hat does Grief have to do with Mental Health Awareness? Each year more than 34,000 individuals take their own life, leaving behind thousands of friends and family members to navigate the tragedy of their loss and Richard Lambert Foundation is seeing the impact. Suicide is the 10th leading cause of death among adults in the U.S. and the 3rd leading cause of death among adolescents. A number of things may put a person at risk of suicide: • Substance abuse • History of trauma • Isolation • Recent tragedy or loss • Agitation and sleep deprivation
How Can Richard Lambert Foundation Family Grief & Healing Center Help? We understand and recognize the unhealthy patterns of thinking and behavior that your loss has triggered. Through our available resources offered at the Grief Center along with the help of our professional grief counselors who provide specialized knowledge and skills in grief, loss and suicide bereavement. Working together, with our care support and management, we will help navigate and guide you through the painful journey of grief, loss and trauma. There is hope, never give up!
How Can You Help? We wouldn’t be able to provide our free programs and low cost services without your continued support! Scott T. Abell
April 8, 1939 to March 10, 2016 Scott passed peacefully with his family at home after a 2 year battle with cancer. He leaves behind his wife, Darlene; two sons, Brian (Bev), Brad (Heidi); and four grandchildren. Scott was a Marine veteran. He then went on to retire after 30 years from StorageTek where he had several patents over the years. Scott also had a Private and Commercial Pilot License. There was a celebration of his life for family and friends. If you would like to donate in Scott’s honor, we would like to support Front Range Hospice 3770 Puritan Way, Unit E, Frederick, CO 80516 or Carbon Valley Lutheran Church, www.carbonchurch.com/donations or 10277 Dogwood Street, Firestone, CO 80504. Scott was a quiet, gentle man who will be deeply missed by everyone.
A limb has fallen from the family tree. I keep hearing a voice that says, “Grieve not for me. Remember the best times, the laughter, the song. The good life I lived while I was strong. Continue my heritage, I’m counting on you. Keep smiling and surely the sun will shine through.
My mind is at ease, my soul is at rest. Remembering all, how I truly was blessed. Continue traditions, no matter how small. Go on with your life, don’t worry about falls I miss you all dearly, so keep up your chin. Until the day comes we’re together again
