They also had Barry Carroll who entered the NBA in the 1977-78 season after playing for the Purdue Boilermakers and was the NBA #1 pick in the draft by the Golden State Warriors. The following summer of 1974, Carl started driving a delivery truck for Kwall Paint Store on South Broadway & Alameda. From time to time painting contractors would ask him if he knew of any painters looking for work; his answer was always, ‘No’. One Friday afternoon Carl was delivering painting supplies to a painter who was in his late 60’s. He asked Carl, “How much money are you making driving that delivery truck?” “$4.30 an hour,” Carl replied. He then said, “If you start working for me I will pay you $8.00 an hour and teach you how to paint.”

His first day on the job was painting a 200 ft radio tower in the middle of nowhere. “That tower was close to Boulder,” Carl chuckles as he reminisces. Learning from an “Old-Timer,” his knowledge advanced very quickly. In the years to come, Carl worked for the top paint companies in the Metro Denver Area, non-union & union companies, such as Lundquist Painting, Taylor Painting, Brown Brothers, Denver Housing Authority, and University Hospital. In the early 1990’s his ex-wife, Shelley, persuaded him to start his own business. Since that day A Masters Touch Painting has painted 1,000’s of homes in the Metro Denver Area. Over 80% of his work has been performed in the Broomfield, Westminster, Louisville & Superior area. A Masters Touch Painting promises to paint your home or business with the highest quality paint job that money can buy! They don’t just say, “A professional job, without the professional price” for nothing, they mean it. A Masters Touch Painting offers interior and exterior painting for residential and commercial clients. They also install and repair siding, paint/stain decks,

gentleman in his late 60’s who gave a young 19-year-old a chance. The “Old-Timer” told him words that he held on to ‘till this very day. He said, “Carl if you want to be the best painter you can be, you will never go wrong - if every house you paint, you paint it as if you were painting GOD’S throne.” That “Old-Timer” was known as Alex, and he has been gone now for 22 years. But his words of wisdom still ring in Carl’s ears and that is why A Masters Touch Painting is the most recognized painting company in the Northern Colorado area. Carl says, “All my Thanks to Alex ‘The Master.’” Call Carl at 720-PAINTER or visit www.720painter.com for more information. We want to thank you & your crew at A Masters Touch - our house looks fantastic! We were very impressed at how quickly you were able to complete the work - especially in light of the approaching weather, as well as our agreed upon completion date. Simply put: A very professional job that exceeded our expectations. With every confidence, we will highly recommend your company. Thanks Again, Randy & Tonya Hughes Broomfield, CO

Photo Above: Carl Ibarra Hi Carl, I wanted to let you know how happy my husband and I are with the paint job you completed on our home. It is such a rare feeling to feel like you were given more than you expected, this is how we felt when you and your awesome crew were finished with our home. It went from drab to "WOW!" I said to my husband, "those guys are amazing, they do such a perfect job and make it look so easy." He replied, "What is the name of their company?" A Masters Touch Painting, what a perfect name for the quality of job performed. I highly recommend anyone needing an exterior paint job to use Carl Ibarra and his great crew. Thank you again. hy…did beautiful women fear they would be cast out if they didn’t get on the casting couch? Why…did people like Melissa McCarthy take much lower wages when others like her were making 15 times her pay? Why…do citizens sit back and let government run over the little people? Why…do women and some men stay in verbally and physically abusive relationships? Why…do so many utilize social media for connection rather than face-to-face relationships? Fear. Insecurity. Fear. Loneliness. Fear. Failure. Fear. Intimidation. Fear. Fear. Fear. Fear of what? Fear of alienation, rejection, shame, embarrassment, mistakes, bullying, threats, difficulty, hassle, stress…the list is long. Fear is real at any given moment. You feel it, sense it. What do you do with it? If you are afraid, then you are afraid. Now what? Stop, ponder and process what you are fearful of…let’s take for example the abused woman. I can’t speak to Melissa McCarthy’s plight as I’ve never made that kind of money. And I’ve never come close to a casting couch. Les Schwab Tires Brings Small Town Values and Big Customer Service to Firestone

I

n a small town in Central Oregon, more than 65 years ago, Les Schwab had a radical idea – to build a tire retailer that took care of customers and the community. And no matter how much Les Schwab Tire Centers has grown – they’re now the largest tire retailer in the West – they’ve kept their small-town values. Customers’ happiness and satisfaction is the top priority and giving back to the community is in their DNA. “We call it “Doing the Right Thing,” and it’s at the heart of everything we do,” said Andrew Zinn, manager of the new Firestone Les Schwab Tire Center. “We believe in service to our customers, our employees and our communities, because we know that doing the right thing matters.” In terms of miles, the new Firestone tire center is a long way from the original Les Schwab in Prineville, Oregon, but not far at all in terms of values. With the June 27 opening of the company’s newest store on Firestone Blvd., residents can expect honest advice to get the job done right the first time. Les Schwab backs all of its products and services with its Best Tire Value Promise to give customers peace of mind, because the workmanship is guaranteed for the life of the tires. “Customers get the Les Schwab experience from the moment they arrive,” says Andrew, with the company 14 years. “We’ll greet you at your car, show you a wide selection of tires and explain our free warranties for tires, brakes, custom wheels, alignments, batteries, shocks and struts.” According to Andrew, you have to experience the personal service, streamlined

showroom and inviting lobby (with iconic free popcorn and coffee) to believe it. If you have a road trip coming up this summer, stop by your local Les Schwab for a pre-trip safety check. They’ll check your tires’ air pressure and tread depth, and do a visual alignment inspection to ensure the tires are wearing evenly. They’ll also inspect your brakes, shocks and battery, all for free. Because peace of mind is also a Les Schwab value. For the Les Schwab crew, their commitment to service doesn’t stop at the edge of the parking lot. Fostering a strong community giving program is Les Schwab’s way of repaying customer loyalty. Once the store opens in Firestone, the team will be looking for ways to give back and take care of their neighbors. In addition to supporting numerous local partners, Les Schwab is proud to invest time and resources in organizations like the Colorado High School Activity Association that promote responsibility, hard work and serving the community – values the company believes in. Andrew and the rest of the Les Schwab crew look forward to joining the Firestone community this summer. Following the soft-opening at the end of June, the store will host a grand opening celebration in summer and the entire community is invited to join three days of festivities and family friendly fun. The new Les Schwab Tire Center is located at 5920 Firestone Blvd. Firestone, CO 80504. For more information about local stores and services offered, visit www.lesschwab.com or call 720.684.6556.

The Carbon Valley Consumer Report—Bringing Residents Information About Area Businesses

Frederick to Hold Special Election A special election will be held on Tuesday June 26, 2018. It will be a mail ballot election with a question referred to the voters by the Board of Trustees regarding the sale of the town-owned electric utility to United Power, Inc. The election is required by Colorado State Statute 31-15-713 as the next step in the process of selling a municipal utility.

Residents can expect to begin receiving their ballots at the beginning of June and can return them through the mail until June 18th or bring them into Town Hall (401 Locust St.) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-5 p.m. Town Hall will be open on Election Day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Residents who haven’t mailed their ballots by June 18th are encouraged to bring their ballots into Town Hall or to the Frederick Post Office (411 Oak St.) to ensure their ballot is received by Election Day. New Colorado residents, or residents who have changed their address within the state, are encouraged to register to vote or change their address at www.govotecolorado. com. Voter registration is also available at Frederick’s Town Hall (401 Locust St.), the Weld County Clerk’s office, any motor vehicle office or drivers’ license office within Colorado. Questions about voter registration can be directed to Frederick Town Clerk, Meghan Martinez at 720.382.5500 or mmartinez@frederickco.gov.

The ballot question will appear as follows: “SHALL THE TOWN OF FREDERICK BE PERMITTED TO SELL THE ELECTRIC LIGHT WORKS UTILITY TO UNITED POWER, INC. FOR A LUMP SUM PAYMENT OF EIGHTEEN MILLION DOLLARS ($18,000,000), AND WITH THE SALE TO CLOSE ON OR BEFORE JULY 1, 2019, WITH SUCH OTHER TERMS AND CONSIDERATIONS AS MAY BE AGREED TO BETWEEN THE TWO PARTIES? ________ YES __________ NO”

Regarding the Electricity Election!

I

would like to remind Frederick residents of an important town election scheduled for June 26th. It will be a mail ballot election with a question regarding the sale of the town owned electric utility. The election is required by State Statute in order to approve the sale of the electrical distribution system in the “Old Town” area of Frederick to United Power for eighteen million dollars. United Power is a non-profit cooperative run by a board elected by those who use its power. It already provides electrical service to the approximately two-thirds of Frederick outside of the “Old Town” area plus to all of the other municipalities in the Carbon Valley area. Since this appears to be a good deal for both the town and United Power, one would expect there to be very little opposition to the sale and I have seen no evidence to date of any. But, please do not take this election for granted. Many developers look to municipally owned utilities for special rates and connection fees and other economic “favors.” While some of this type activity may be entirely justified to attract new businesses, doing it through an electrical utility tends to hide what’s being done from the town residents and add extra cost burdens to the other utility customers. In some more extreme cases it can result in unethical and even illegal activities involving developers and town officials. Some less than completely ethical developers may not be happy with this sale to a non-profit electrical cooperative highly unlikely to participate in any of these types of activities. Such developers could attempt to thwart the sale by trying to defeat this election. So, please take the small amount of time necessary to vote “Yes” on this ballot question approving the sale. According to the Town clerk, residents can expect to begin receiving their ballots at the beginning of June and can return them through the mail until June 18th or bring them into Town Hall (401 Locust St.) Monday through Friday, 7 a.m.-5 p.m.

Dear Editor:

Dear Editor...

This note is in regard to an incident that happened recently in Dacono. A Veteran passed away and his family wanted to hold a small memorial at the new Veterans Memorial at Hwy 52 and Colorado Boulevard. A friend of the family agreed to call the Town of Dacono for permission. The request was denied—supposedly due to lack of parking space—although a nearby field to the north would seem adequate. The high-ranking official in the Dacono government office was less than friendly and became very irate when asked to further explain the decision. Th official finally exploded in anger, said the issue was NOT his problem and hung up on the caller. My questions are: 1. Dacono builds a Veteran’s Memorial and veterans can’t use it. Why? 2. Why would Dacono spend so much money and not provide parking? 3. Last but certainly not least, what kid of an impression did this official leave on the caller—who was simply trying to help his friends? Shame, shame, shame on the official. Veterans living in the town of Dacono should and would be, I’m sure, irate and angry over this situation if they knew about it. Thank you, Linda Duncan, Firestone

Dear Editor...

Thank you Attorney Rick Sampson

I

would like to thank Attorney Rick Sampson and the Sampson Law Firm for years of hard work, dedication and commitment to the Town on Mead. As the Town Attorney, Mr. Sampson provided the board and staff with legal guidance, advice and litigation for decades. I could not have done my job effectively as a Trustee without the input and council provided by him. I am sorry he is leaving his Town position and I wish him all the best in his future endeavors. Again, thank you Rick for your support of our Town. Colleen Whitlow, Former Town of Mead Trustee

Through this project, the Town is extending McClure from First Avenue in Historic Firestone west to Colorado Boulevard, and adding sidewalks, a bridge and a signalized intersection. The project is aimed at enhancing Historic Firestone and improving convenience for drivers and pedestrians. z Thank you for reading this report and for continuing to share your ideas and feedback with the Board of Trustees and me. You can reach me at bsindelar@firestoneco.gov. I hope to see you soon at some of our upcoming events. Bobbi Sindelar, Mayor

I

s the man of the house yearning for his own space? Whether you are converting the basement, the garage, the attic or a spare room, add a masculine touch with a coat of paint. Mid to deep tones of browns, bronzes, reds, burgundies, blues, grays, yellows and greens are most the often requested colors from men, accompanied by trim painted in white or black. Referred to as strong and sophisticated, these colors provide the back drop within the whole room picture brought together with furniture, floor and wall coverings, upholstery and artwork. Most men prefer a minimalistic look in their caves and it is the color scheme and decor that sets the mood no matter what style you prefer. For upholstered pieces, leather, chenille, denim or other textured fabrics are the most desired.

Metal furniture is often used in these rooms and will contribute to the perception of a masculine rather than feminine setting. Some color ideas we chose from Sherwin Williams: Blues: Naval, SW 6244 or Open Seas, SW 6500 Green: Green Earth, SW 7748 Dark Gray: Mount Etna SW 7625 Black: Tricorn Black, SW 6258 Brown: Toasty, SW 6095 or Polished Mahogany SW 2838

One of the most popular applications we paint in men’s (and women’s) spaces are walls lacquered with specialty paints, producing layers and layers of colors for a deep translucent look. When the look is completed, the right paint colors will lend themselves to a more masculine feel without the old bachelor pad look. If you want to appeal to the lady of the house as well add a few touches of neutral colors to balance the color scheme.

Grill Safety Provided by Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District

I

t’s that time of year when fire in the grill, under hot dogs and hamburgers, is a welcome sight at a family cookout. To keep you and your family safe while grilling, follow these general guidelines from the National Fire Protection Association. • Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors. • The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings, and out from under eaves and overhanging branches. • Keep children and pets away from the grill area. • Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and trays below the grill. • Never leave your grill unattended.

“Rally For Our Rights - Back to Boulder”

On

May 15th, 2018 Boulder City Council passed an overreaching and oppressive “assault weapons” ban. This ban does nothing to address public safety, but instead turned thousands of law abiding citizens into criminals themselves. And we are not happy! Hundreds of gun rights supporters have already taken to the streets of Boulder prior to the passage of this ban - and now we’re going back! Join with your fellow Second Amendment supporters at “Rally For Our Rights - Back to Boulder” – a demonstration in support of the Right to Keep and Bear Arms! Saturday 06/09/2018 – 1 to 4pm –

Central Park Boulder, Colorado. This will be a non-permitted event exercising our First Amendment right to protest on public sidewalks and the public park. There will be no speakers or set agenda. We will be lining Broadway St at the intersection of Canyon Blvd near Central Park (which can be used as overflow if needed). We will carry flags, banners, and signs. Please do bring: - Enthusiasm - Signs, lots of signs! Focus on the issue at hand in Boulder, the gun ban and how it has affected law abiding gun owners! - American, historical, and patriotic

flags - Banners and signs supporting gun rights and the 2nd Amendment. Please do not bring: - Confederate, Anarchy, Trump, or other political propaganda flags - Off topic signs or banners, or anything advocating or attacking a particular political party or ideology beyond the Second Amendment This is a single focus/issue event with participants from various political parties and with differing ideological beliefs. Please be respectful and courteous to your fellow Second Amendment supporters. This is not an open carry protest,

but you can open carry if you’d like! It is legal in Boulder to open carry a holstered firearm. Long guns and rifles should be in a clearly marked (or clear?) case. Concealed weapons need to be permitted. We will meet at the corner of Broadway St and Canyon Blvd, near the Bandshell, and spread out from there. There are several parking structures downtown for parking as well as on street parking all over downtown. Feel free to share this invitation with your friends and other interested parties. It’s time to fight back and make our voices heard. We hope to see you there! What’s next with the ban?

En Face Dance Force Brings Their Best Cherie Elaine

W

hen competition season ends, a group of 18 exhausted and excited dancers celebrate with hugs and tears. They work all year long for this moment— the moment when they can relax in their success. It takes a lot of hard work, commitment, and hard love. Every year they improve over the last, and this year they were exceptional! This isn’t just a team of great dancers. It is a dance family. Depending on their age group, they spend an average of 6 to 20 hours a week together, physically and mentally challenging themselves and each other. Because of the support of their teammates and the love and encouragement from Owner and Director, Joanne Senior, and Artistic Director, Camille Dali, this team can celebrate. Ages ranging from 5 to 14 years, these dancers swept world renowned judges and instructors off of their feet. They won numerous First Place Overall awards, as well as scholarships to more competitions and training events. One dancer, at 13 years of age, won the esteemed scholarship to attend the Academy of Music, Dance and Arts this summer, a program for high school students at the Dance Conservatory. Most impressive to Director, Joanne Senior, was being awarded the Professionalism Award. This award goes to the studio that exhibits high quality performance both on and off stage. “It is one thing to teach dance, it is another to teach students to be honorable,” says Joanne. The most important thing she can offer them are the skills of honesty and humility. Among the most coveted awards this season were for the choreography. Artistic Director Camille Dali signed with an agent in November because of her skilled technique and development. Her work has been so impressive that she was invited to judge the Headliners Competition. She has been complimented and awarded for her hard work at each of the eight competitions her students attended this season, one award being for Innovative Imagery. No studio competition team can truly be successful without aggressive ballet training, and this is the area that Director Joanne Senior excels in. Her experience

is vast, but her most current training has been with the American Ballet Theater, or ABT. This year an examiner will be will be coming to En Face to test students based on the skills that Joanne has been bringing into her Ballet curriculum. She has completed five levels with ABT, and after the testing is completed in June, she will finish as an affiliate teacher with ABT. This is an esteemed honor, one that she does not take lightly. She wants to grow the Ballet program at En Face, believing Ballet is the training most critical to a dancers’ training. Although En Face is a successful competition studio, it is also a place for all dancers. Classes are offered for the recreational dancer as well. All students receive the same quality of training, and there is something for every level of dancer. To learn more and sign up for summer dance and fitness sessions, please visit the website at www.enfacestudios.com. Tickets to the En Face Summer Showcase on June 2 are available at www.tututix. com/enfacestudios. Serious about competing as a dancer? There is a parent meeting on June 8, and company auditions on June 9. More information about that is available on the website!

Food for the Soul-Choose Joy

O

ur lives are filled with choices- what to wear today, how to spend our money, where we will live, who to work for, and on and on the list of things we make decisions about continues… Many of our choices are somewhat mundane; others have major impact on us and the ones we love. This column is about one of the most major decisions for anyone faced with a terminal illness, as was my oldest daughter Michelle. She came our way in 1971, an 8 pound 13 ounce bundle of joy. We were delighted to become parents, and this bouncing baby girl fit the bill perfectly. Hundreds of pictures were taken (slides of course), and she had her own room from birth with zero competition, at least for a couple of years until #2 arrived on the scene. Growing up in a pastor’s home gave her lots of interaction with people from all over the world, as we were doing college campus work at the University of Minnesota and later at Delaware State College. Her childhood was normal American, except for eventually having 9 brothers and sisters. When she was only five years old she made a commitment to follow the Lord Jesus Christ, and that began to shape who she was and how she viewed life and her choices. Homeschooling added to her Christian heritage, and she was an apt student of the things of the Lord. We moved to Colorado in 1988, and she fell in love and married a wonderful man- Robb Nielsen in June of

1992, and their family came to be five fine children. Not so long after her 5th child was born, she was diagnosed with breast cancer. Thus, started treatments with radiation and chemotherapy that would happen periodically over the years. Hair loss is normal and varying degrees of discomfort troubled her as she dealt with this challenge. But perhaps the biggest mountain to climb for anyone facing a life-threatening disease is HOW they see themselves fighting this fight for life. Some will resign themselves as victims and simply move along through treatments solemnly without much hope. Not my daughter- she chose the joy of the Lord to be her strength and radiated that perspective to all who knew her. When she wrote in her Caring Bridge pages to communicate with friends and family about her progress, it was always positive and encouraging. “The Lord did this” or “The Lord helped me with that” would go her blog, and you could not find any element of self-pity in her writing. It was all about encouraging whoever would read it. Like Barnabas in the Book of Acts, she was definitely a daughter of encouragement. Michelle was an initiator, finding ways to bless others as she raised her own family. One such blessing was

y name is Laura Gould and I am the owner/operator of Golden Tranquility Massage Therapy, LLC in Frederick. I graduated from the Denver School of Massage Therapy in 2010 and I have never looked back! I am passionate about massage therapy and the incredible healing it can bring to body, mind and spirit. For many years massage has been thought to belong only on vacation or as a treat for special occasions. While these are great times to enjoy a relaxing massage to care for yourself, massage therapy has grand applications for everyday stress management, preventative medical care and recovery from injury and illness. Massage therapy has given me the opportunity to be a part of the healing journey of many clients and I continue to be humbled and grateful for the experience. In my practice I specialize in injury treatment and prevention. I offer a wide selection of therapeutic modalities including Medical Cupping, Trigger Point Therapy and Prenatal Massage. Every massage is uniquely tailored for that individual by integrating a variety of techniques and tools that I have learned over the years. I continue to incorporate new techniques through continuing education. This summer I will be expanding my practice with Oncology and Geriatric Massage as well as Gua Sha, a healing technique of traditional Eastern Asian medicine. her annual calendar full of birthdays and anniversaries for extended family. Another was the annual Easter egg hunt where she stuffed plastic eggs with candy and enjoyed watching all the young ones search and find treats. Recently when my wife and I celebrated 50 years of marital bliss, she was in the middle of planning how the Coleman tribe would proceed on that fine day. As her own oldest son was married in March, again she was full speed ahead in the details of that service. You wouldn’t know she was fighting for her life with the evil of cancer in her body. As our family gathered around her ICU bedside on May 8th to be with her as her departure time had arrived, there was both sadness and joy in every face. Sadness for our loss of a daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt; and joy for the massive imprint she had made in each of our own lives. Tears and laughter filled the room, and we sang several Christian songs together, and prayed, as we watched her slip into the arms of Jesus just before noon. As each of us came into her room, her youngest son Pierce took a magic marker and drew on our hands six simple lines resembling a smiling person, with the letter “c” as the smile and “j” as the partial outline of the face. It will be part of her legacy as all of us were impacted by

her bravery and faith, and her decision to “choose joy” as a life mantra over sorrow or depression or being a victim. How did she manage to do so? With the daily help of her Lord, who gives strength to all who come to Him, and with the decision to smile at the future no matter what that future appeared to be. As her father, my heart is broken over our loss, but as a follower of the same Lord, I could not be happier at both her brilliant example of faith in action and her leaving us with the challenge to ‘go and do likewise’ in our own lives. Choosing joy must become part of who we are as men and women following Jesus. Whatever my lot, He has taught us to say, “It is well, it is well with my soul”. Going forward with the help of our precious Lord, we will choose joy. And with the memory of my precious daughter, we will choose joy.

St. Brigit Episcopal Church to Celebrate Summer Solstice

Lo

oking for a new way to celebrate the change of seasons? St. Brigit Episcopal Church invites you to welcome Summer at its Solstice Celebration on Thursday, June 21, 2018, at 8:00p.m. The Summer Solstice Service is part of St. Brigit’s Áit Caol series, now entering its sev-enth year. Áit Caol (pronounced atch qweel) is Gaelic for “A Thin Place.” These events are created to offer guests an experience of God through a unique service, which combines ancient tradition with contemporary language. They include sacred spaces specially designed for each service. These beautiful, engaging areas for meditation or prayer appeal to the senses and bring scripture to life. Live music with a Celtic sound is featured throughout the service. In keeping with the Celtic tradition of honoring the earth as God’s creation, St. Brigit will mark the Summer Solstice, the longest day of the year, as a celebration of God’s gift of light. The Solstice Service is

unique among the Áit Caol services in that all the medita-tion areas will be outdoors on the church grounds, including one utilizing St. Brigit’s out-door labyrinth. St. Brigit’s youth group, the Lightsiderz, will be assisting in creating the meditation areas. Older children are welcome at the service. Childcare will be provided for children under age six. Solstice is derived from the Latin words sol (sun) and sistere (to stand still). This reflects the belief of ancient people that the sun revolved around the earth. The Celts celebrated the Summer Solstice by building bonfires on hilltops. This tradition continues in modern-day Ireland. In Celtic Christianity the Summer Solstice came to be associated with St. John’s Day, honoring the birthday of John the Baptist, who was born six months before Jesus. St. Brigit Episcopal Church is located at 110 Johnson Street in Frederick. Vis-it www. stbrigit.org or www.facebook.com/StBrigit for more information.

Frederick to Dedicate Fitness Station Loop at Centennial Park New park amenity funded by LiveWell Colorado, CVPRD and Town of Frederick

T

he Town of Frederick will dedicate their new fitness station loop in Centennial Park (630 8th St.) Thursday May 17th at 5 p.m. This new loop contains five fitness stations that were funded in part by a LiveWell Colorado HEAL Cities & Towns Grant matched by the Town of Frederick, and an additional matching sponsorship by the Carbon Valley Parks and Recreation District (CVPRD). Attendees are encouraged to wear workout gear to give the stations a try as part of the dedication. Frederick has been part of LiveWell Colorado’s HEAL Cities & Towns Campaign since 2013, and has a HEAL Committee that is committed to what HEAL stands for: Healthy Eating and Active Living. As part of the HEAL Cities & Towns Campaign, the Town of Frederick has committed to adopting policy options promoted by LiveWell Colorado to improve communities’ access to options that will help them stay active and have access to healthy food. The five stations include a torso bench, a knee raise, row and dip combo machine, a double lower back trainer, a compound push up machine and a pull up dip combo machine. These stations are open to public use during park hours and will create access to fitness and recreation for all demographics in the area. The master plan process for Centennial Park, started in 2013 and completed in 2014, identified the desire for fitness stations. The addition of these fitness stations increases usability of a currently under-utilized area of the park. To check out instructional videos regarding how to properly use the stations, go to www.frederickco.gov/ fitness.

oday I read a beautiful obituary about a woman who grew up on a farm between Longmont and Boulder, had many grandchildren, great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. She “died of natural causes at age 109”... Now I’m going to assume a great deal... I bet she ate well, grew up on vegetables straight from the ground, butter, milk and meat from pastured cows, worked and played outside in all sorts of weather. Maybe she ate plenty of cookies too. Understandably, things were different for her as a child and young adult, there was more land and less people. Did she continue eating well after the food industry started manipulating food decades ago? The purpose of this article is to provide readers with resources that help answer questions about food. A common statement is how information about food changes all the time. The egg and cholesterol is a perfect example of “data” changes. Data is in quotations because inaccurate information has been delivered by industries that are not necessarily interested in health. It is important to find out where the information comes from, and who pays for the research. The following website offers current and historical research articles: https://www. seleneriverpress.com/historical/ I’d like to provide as many reputable and honest resources as possible. I recently discovered a documentary called “Magic Pill”. It is not about pills at all, it thoroughly follows children, adults, families and large groups of people from this and other countries to document the changes in their health after providing them with nutritional information. The changes are amazing. An excellent local resource is through the Raw Milk Association of Colorado, http://www.rawmilkcolorado. org. Also, speaking directly with farmers in

your area is probably the most informative. The Farmer’s Markets are out in full force, please visit and ask questions! A few more resources include the following Weld County residents: Ty and Page Turecek are a great local resource for your questions about beef: www.theviewfromunderacowboyhat.com Joy Erickson is a great local resource for your questions about milk, pork, honey, eggs and dog treats: (970)556-4481| milklady2007@gmail.com

Last but not least, money and food are topics that come up together. My family has noticed that it is actually more cost effective to purchase directly from farmers. For example, larger amounts of beef once per year from a small farm is not only more cost effective than purchasing smaller portions from grocery stores, but the quality is much better. The same goes for milk. The quality of milk is much higher than what is offered at grocery stores and the cost is the same. The only personal opinion I’ll give in this article is that I enjoy knowing who the people are that work so hard to provide quality food. I’ve learned a great deal from them. Thank you.

Challenge Winner, Hydration & Summer Fitness Classes

T

ime For Change Personal Training and Fitness Group started a 6 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge in April 2018 to help ladies improve their overall health by gaining lean muscle, lose fat, and to help improve their nutrition and water intake. Congratulations to Melissa Anderson of Longmont, the winner of the 6 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge. She lost 18.6lbs (8.45%), and earned $435 from everyone’s buy-in at the start of the challenge. Melissa accomplished this by attending my ladies only Fitness Group two times per week, walking/running, and cutting way down on carbs/sugar. Of the 20 ladies that finished the challenge, we lost 154.4lbs as a group. Way to go Melissa and ladies for improving your health! As we gear up for the summer months, it’s a great reminder to increase your water intake so you stay hydrated and healthy. You need to drink half of your body weight in ounces per day, and even more when you’re sweating during workouts and outside activities. The first thing to do is measure how much water in ounces you’re currently drinking per day. Most will find that they’re way short on this number. Then start increasing your daily intake gradually and you’ll get to your goal. Try adding a slice of orange, lemon or lime to your water to add extra flavor. Ladies, are you looking for a place to work out that is fun and judgment free? Join us at either location for my fitness classes in Frederick and Niwot. This is an interval/circuit training type of class. We have some teens that attend with their moms, and ladies in their 20’s - 60’s that are a part of this group. All the exercises

can be modified for different abilities, past injuries, etc. The summer fitness classes will be Monday and Wednesday evenings in Frederick at 7pm, and Tuesday and Thursday mornings in Niwot at 8:30am. Your first session is free and a RSVP is required online, so be sure to check out my website on how to sign up. I’m also a mobile personal trainer that comes to your home for training if you prefer. Contact Tracy Rewerts, NASM Certified Personal Trainer and Fitness Nutrition Specialist at 303-828-2856 or visit www. TimeForChangePersonalTraining.com for details.

olorado Roof Toppers of Mead, Colorado, has received the most prestigious contractor award GAF offers: The GAF President’s Club Award. This highly coveted award recognizes Colorado Roof Toppers as one of the “elite of the elite” residential roofing contractors in the United States. GAF is North America’s largest roofing manufacturer, and only GAF Master Elite® Contractors can compete for its residential President’s Club Award. To qualify for this award, a residential roofing contractor must meet specific criteria in at least one out of three different pathways: • Performance pathway - where contractors focus on giving their property owners the best possible service, quality, and protection • Reliability pathway - where the contractor has a long history of offering their customers the best quality and protection • Service pathway - where contractors consistently offer their customers the best protection available in the marketplace. To become a Master Elite® Contractor—a status that less than 2% of roofing contractors nationwide are able to achieve—a candidate must demonstrate proper licensing, maintain insurance (in states that require it), have a proven reputation, and show commitment to ongoing professional training. “We value our certified contractors for raising the industry standard year after year by installing the best roofing products and systems. Our President’s Club award recognizes only those contractors who have distinguished themselves by the highest standards of excellence, customer satisfaction, and dependability,” says Jim Slauson, GAF’s VP of Certified Program & Services. “Most people choose us because we’re the highest-rated residential roofing contractor in northern Colorado,” says president Scott Bart. “We strive to provide the best service possible — and it shows. We make it a point to help educate our

clients, which allows them to make informed decisions for their homes.” Colorado Roof Toppers doesn’t merely “sell” roofs, according to Bart. “We explain all the choices and options available, why we use the products we use, and what the roofing process entails. Roofing is expensive, and we feel that customers should really understand what they are purchasing.” Working primarily as a residential roofing contractor, the company installs complete roofing systems with materials sourced from a single manufacturer. This ensures that all components fit together precisely, resulting in an aesthetically pleasing roof that functions perfectly. Colorado Roof Toppers performs an in-depth damage assessment to ensure that every layer is properly checked. In addition to roofing services, the company fabricates highend, heavy-gauge seamless gutters onsite. Every gutter system is custom-made for a particular home, resulting in a perfect match and fit. The company is involved in the community. Colorado Roof Toppers has been working with Habitat for Humanity since 2015, replacing roofs for needy families. It also participates in local community events, such as the 9News Health Fair, and has been a sponsor for Mead Community Days and the Berthoud Snowfest. A member of the National Roofing Contractors Association, the company is a multiple-year recipient of GAF’s Triple Excellence Award and the Angie’s List Super Service Award. Colorado Roof Toppers is accredited by the Better Business Bureau with an A+ rating. For 2018, the company plans to roll out more YouTube videos designed to help customers understand the different roofing components and the overall roofing process. “Our plan, concludes Bart, “is to continue to provide the best service possible. Our goal is to continue to receive rave reviews by providing incredible service and value.” You can reach them at 720.378.1901 or www.coloradorooftoppers.com and on www.facebook.com/colorado.rooftoppers

Having Fun With Facebook Marketing

R

ecently I’ve been having so much fun with my business and helping my clients! We’ve been doing more and more videos, giveaways, polls, and contests. Have you used any of these tools? Live video is like video on steroids. Give it a try, and you’ll be amazed at how many views you get! Just remember to keep your videos under three minutes. You’d be surprised how much reach you can get even with a :10 or :30 second video! People will always be more interested in other people than anything else. Make sure you have lots of pictures or video of PEOPLE! Contests are fun because everyone loves to be a winner, even if it’s for a $5 Starbucks card. If you haven’t tried using a poll for a post yet, try it this week. Facebook will even automatically pull up gifs for you to use if you want. People don’t mind responding to a “this” or

“that” question where there is no right or wrong answer. N e e d help with your content? Face to Face provides professional management of business pages. Call for a one hour consultation. FHS YOUTH SUMMER BBALL CAMP FHS YOUTH SUMMER BBALL CAMP

was an exciting year for Frederick High School Tennis. The Girl’s Tennis Program in it’s fourth year had over 40 girls come out for the team. And, for the first time in history two FHS players made it into the 2018 Tennis State Tournament held in Greeley. The FHS Tennis team had six seniors this year, four of them having been with the program since its inception in 2014. Of the over 40 girls who came out for the team, a few had never picked up a racket before, but were able to come out, learn the game and develop skills that will carry them through life. Coach Mark Allen, coached the girls team this year. He is the Boy’s Tennis coach as well and has coached that program for the past few years. As a first for the FHS girl’s program two players qualified for state: 1st Singles: Chasen Marinof and 2nd Singles: Jessica Kelly. Second Doubles Jennifer Castrejon and Anastacia Lowe placed 3rd in Regionals and did not advance to the tournament. The program looks forward to a great future. Although the six seniors: Mari Orozco, Jennifer Castrejon, Anastacia Lowe, Grace Colvin, Fayth James and Katrine Bjelke, will be missed the FHS Girls Tennis program has many upcoming underclassmen including the two girls who advanced to state.

Why Use a REALTOR®

A

ll real estate licensees are not the same. Only real estate licensees who are members of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS® are properly called REALTORS®. They proudly display the REALTOR “®” logo on the business card or other marketing and sales literature. REALTORS® are committed to treat all parties to a transaction honestly. REALTORS® subscribe to a strict code of ethics and are expected to maintain a higher level of knowledge of the process of buying and selling real estate. An independent survey reports that 84% of home buyers would use the same REALTOR® again. Colorado REALTOR® Real estate transactions involve one of the biggest financial investments most people experience in their lifetime. Transactions today usually exceed $100,000. If you had a $100,000 income tax problem, would you attempt to deal with it without the help of a CPA? If you had a $100,000 legal question, would you deal with it without the help of an attorney? Considering the small upside cost and the large downside risk, it would be foolish to consider a deal in real estate without the professional assistance of a REALTOR®. But if you’re still not convinced of the value of a REALTOR®, here are a dozen more reasons to use one… 1. Your REALTOR® can help you determine your buying power 2. Your REALTOR® has many resources to assist you in your home search.

3. Your REALTOR® can assist you in the selection process by providing objective information about each property. 4. Your REALTOR® can help you negotiate. 5. Your REALTOR® provides due diligence during the evaluation of the property 6. Your REALTOR® can help you in understanding different financing options and in identifying qualified lenders. 7. Your REALTOR® can guide you through the closing process and make sure everything flows together smoothly. 8. When selling your home, your REALTOR® can give you up-to-date information on what is happening in the marketplace and the price, financing, terms and condition of competing properties 9. Your REALTOR® markets your property to other real estate agents and the public. 10. Your REALTOR® will know when, where and how to advertise your property. 11. Your REALTOR® can help you objectively evaluate every buyer’s proposal without compromising your marketing position 12. Your REALTOR® can help close the sale of your home.

he Aspiring Writers group from Legacy Elementary School were special guests at the SVVSD Board Meeting at 7:00 p.m. on May 9 at the School District’s Office. They handed out copies of the newly created school newspaper, The Legacy Lion Tales, and copies of the April and May editions of the Carbon Valley Consumer Report to each board member present. Editor/Publisher Kelly Martindale graciously printed each Aspiring Writer’s article in these two editions of the CVCR. Principal, Sean Corey, told the board members that the project was an ongoing

Betty Heath, who served as facilitator for the Aspiring Writers told the School Board that this wasn’t just a one-time effort, but rather the newspaper was created to promote better communication with the students, teachers and staff. She told the group she will return next year to assist in helping the group publish another issue of the Legacy Lion Tales.

Four Frederick Scholarship Winners

fter submitting applications and essays about how they represent Frederick’s slogan ‘Built on What Matters,’ and impressing the Frederick Scholarship Commission in their interviews, seniors Isaac Dukes, Payton Garcia, Bethany Steen and Logan Turner each won a Town of Frederick scholarship of $1,500 each year for four years, provided they continue to meet the ongoing eligibility requirements throughout the four-year period. All four students are Frederick residents, a requirement of the scholarship. Isaac Dukes is graduating from Mead High School and will be attending the Colorado School of Mines in the fall to study Computer Science. Payton Garcia is graduating from Frederick High School and will be heading off to Colorado Mesa University to study Kinesiology. Bethany Steen, who has served her community as a member of the Frederick Arts Commission, is graduating from Mead High School and will be going to Western State Colorado University to study Clinical Psychology and Spanish. Logan Turner is graduating from Frederick High School and will be attending Rutgers New Brunswick to study Astrophysics. “The interviews have really given the process of awarding these scholarships more of a focus on community,” said Mayor Tony Carey. “Their community is investing in them now and I know they will be giving back ten-fold because that’s the kind of people these students are. You can be inspired by knowing that such upstanding and caring youth exist across the country and especially here in Frederick.”

2017 Santa Cops Update

T

he Firestone Police Department would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of the thoughtful individuals who volunteered and donated not only their time, but also their generosity to the Firestone Santa Cops Program. 2017 marked the 18th anniversary of the program, and during those 18 years, countless individuals have contributed to Carbon Valley families during the holiday season by providing them with such necessities as food and clothing. We are simply overwhelmed by the kindness demonstrated by past and present community members, as well as businesses and contractors located in and outside of Firestone. We also wish to acknowledge the shoppers and wrappers who go above and beyond to ensure that each gift receives special care in its selection and wrapping. We couldn’t do it without you. Finally, we wish to say thank you to all the anonymous donors who desire not to be recognized. You know who you are. Your donations can make the difference in providing a family with groceries and new apparel, such as shoes and socks for the little ones. n April 21st at Midnight over 300 high school students were found hanging out at FHS. What where they doing you ask? These kids were having the time of their lives playing games, running through obstacle courses, playing with play doh, winning prizes and just having fun with each other at the FHS After Prom. After prom is designed to give our kids a safe place to go once they come back to town from Prom. The event is free to all the kids and when they arrive they can hardly believe that all the food they can eat, the games, the activities, the henna tattoos, the caricature drawings, the cash cab and prize wheel are all free! The event is free to the kids because of the generosity of our local businesses. And the event would not happen without the work of over 50 volunteers. Every year the FHS Booster Club works to host the FHS After Prom and this year over 300 kids attended from 11:00 pm - 3:00 in the morning. Each of those kids woke up on Sunday safe and sound and that is why the Booster Club and its volunteers work so hard to make FHS After Prom a successful event. Keeping our kids safe is a work of passion. Thank you to all of our local businesses who sponsored and donated for the event.

CVPRD Appoints New Executive Director

C

arbon Valley Parks and Recreation District (CVPRD) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dean Rummel as the new Executive Director. Rummel brings more than 15 years of experience in organizational leadership and proven success in parks and recreation.

“Over the last couple of years, our District has paused for some deep reflection and community engagement. This has propelled us to think about our future, our strengths, areas of improvement, and what kind of leader we need to accomplish the community’s goals for recreation in the Carbon Valley,” said CVPRD Board President Tracie Crites. “Dean represents seasoned leadership in the parks and recreation community, and a bright new chapter in the story of CVPRD. His entrepreneurial spirit, along with his expertise in strategic planning and

community engagement, will continue to propel our organizations momentum and growth. His consistent and thoughtful communication and great sense of humor will amplify our staff and district in moments today and tomorrow,” Crites shared. “Most important, Dean’s passion and love for all things recreation will anchor his leadership with our extraordinary staff to provide positive and historic opportunities for all of Carbon Valley to enjoy. We deeply appreciate the support of our communities, and we thank you for your encouragement and investment in welcoming Dean to our team.” Rummel joins the District from the City of Boulder where he has worked in the Parks and Recreation Department for the past 12 years, most recently as a Recreation Manager. Prior to joining the City of Boulder, Dean spent five years working at YMCAs in Iowa and Missouri.

His expertise pertaining to joint use agreements, program partnership creations, community engagement, staff development, capital project management, department leadership, and service alignments to community values attribute to Rummel’s wealth of knowledge and reputation as a leader in the industry. His ability to adapt and work cohesively within numerous Parks and Recreation departments and with various people make him a natural partner of innovation and collaboration. With a bachelor’s degree in Recreation Management from the University of Northern Iowa, Rummel also earned a Leading, Educating, and Developing certification from the University of Virginia. As a content expert, he has presented at both state and national conferences. He and his wife Katie have two daughters, Zoe and Harper. As a family, much of their time is spent enjoying all that Colorado has to offer, including many parks and recreation programs. “I am excited for the opportunity to

join the Carbon Valley Parks and Recreation D i s t r i c t . Throughout my career, I have maintained h i g h performance standards within a diverse range of parks and recreation service functions and look forward to bringing my past experiences, leadership, and passion to the district. Throughout the hiring process I have felt connected with the community, services, stakeholders, and staff leading to my belief of great success together. I look forward to starting our journey together and collaborating with the many amazing people within the district in identifying and growing the district’s culture, goals, and vision,” said Rummel.
