What Is Hail Damage, and How Can You Tell? By Chris Blankenship
If we haven’t already had a significant hail storm in the area this season, it is likely coming soon. People often ask me how to tell if their property has been damaged by hail. There are a number of indicators of storm damage that can be seen from the ground, so it isn’t necessary for you to actually get on the roof. Also, it is always a good idea to document the hail with your phone camera. Once the storm has passed, take pictures of the hailstones, holding them in your hand with a similar sized object or next to a tape measure. Never attempt to do this while it is still hailing. The size of the hailstones is one of the most significant factors in determining whether damage will occur. When the hail is 1” or smaller, damage is less likely, but still possible. When the hail reaches 1.5” in size, the damage is much more likely and easier to identify. Once the hail reaches 2”, you can be almost certain that severe damage has occurred. What should you look for? Once the storm has passed, go outside and examine any vehicles that were exposed in the street or driveways. If there are significant dents, then the roofs are likely dented too. Similar dents will be visible on your gutter downspouts and extensions. Look at the siding on your home and at your deck. There will likely be impact marks and missing paint or stain. Also, your window screens could have tears or marks. Another

obvious indicator is your plants and trees, which could be shredded or broken. If you are finding evidence of damage to these items, then it is time to contact a trustworthy, licensed and local contractor to do a roof inspection. In many cases, you may not have to wait long for a roofing contractor to show up at your door, as roofers are well aware of the areas where hailstorms occur, and are VERY proactive. Most important is that you do your homework to find a contractor you can trust. Read their reviews on Google, Homeadvisor and BBB. Have them take
pictures, ask a lot of questions, and don’t feel pressured to make any decisions right away. A good contractor should be totally familiar with the local building codes and fully capable of representing your interests throughout the insurance claim process. Remember, everyone works for you, including your contractor and the insurance company. If you think you may have been damaged by a recent storm, or simply have questions regarding your roof, please call Chris Blankenship of GreenPoint Roofing 303.717.9115

Winners of the Town of Firestone George E. Heath Scholarship Awards By Betty Heath
George had a stubborn streak in him, but when I would tell him he was stubborn he would say no, I’m determined. If you are not willing to learn, no one can help you. If you are determined to learn, no one can stop you. Real leaders are ordinary people with extraordinary determination. There may be times that you will want to scream. That’s o.k. You’re allowed to scream; You’re allowed to cry; But the one thing you aren’t ever allowed to do is to give up. Education is the one thing that no one can ever take away from you. Knowledge and wisdom are two words that can be used interchangeably. But there is an important difference between the two. Knowledge is about the accumulation of facts and information. Wisdom is about knowing how to use the information that you have acquired. You don’t want to store up knowledge in a silo and not use it. Knowledge is more of a head-thing. Wisdom, on the other hand is more of a heart thing than a head thing. Wisdom uses the knowledge you’ve learned to live out the facts and information you have acquired. If George sensed I was struggling with something he would always say: “It’s o.k. everything will be better tomorrow, Bet.” And you know what? He was right.
Never doubt yourself: Always remember and hold on to the things that make you strong. If you ever fall down don’t wallow in the mud hole. Self-pity will get you nowhere. Pick yourself up; dust yourself off and say, “It’s o.k. everything will be better tomorrow.” Wherever you go; whatever you do I encourage you to always keep hope in your pocket and faith in your heart.
From the Town of Firestone
The George E. Heath Community Scholarship was created in honor of former Trustee George Heath, a passionate advocate of education and community service. He served the Town of Firestone in varying capacities for over 20 years. On Wednesday, May 11th the Firestone Board of Trustees recognized two students from Firestone for the George E. Heath Community Scholarship. Both will receive $1,250 to go towards educational expenses this fall. Even amid COVID regulations, both of these students have demonstrated their academic excellence, showed involvement in many extracurricular activities, and even had time to complete community service hours. Elizabeth Schmidt, a senior at Frederick High School, was involved with Student Council, is a member of the

National Honor Society, and is a studentathlete participating in volleyball and the swim team. She is an active volunteer in the community and an excellent student. She will be attending Colorado State University in the fall, studying Human Development and Family Studies with career aspirations of being involved with occupational therapy. Audrey Long, a senior at Skyline High School and lifelong resident of Firestone, is an excellent student and has been very active in extracurricular activities, including Sources of Strength, GSA, theater, and National Honor Society. She has been a very committed and active volunteer in the community – at the Longmont Human Society, on the High Plains Library District’s Teen Advisory Board, for the Weld Food Bank, for the Carbon Valley Help Center, and at Firestone events. Audrey plans to attend Front Range Community College this fall to work on her Associate of Science degree and has aspirations of working in the STEM field – biological, chemical or environmental engineering. On behalf of the entire Board of Trustees and the Town of Firestone, congratulations to both of you and all graduating seniors. We wish you all the best of luck this fall and into the future.

of single-family detached and attached housing products. The diversity of housing types will allow residents of all ages and stages of life to contribute to our community. Reliable Infrastructure: Town administrators of Mead, Milliken, Johnstown, and Berthoud are finalizing details with Allo Communications regarding license and franchise agreements for high-speed broadband services. Collectively, the Towns joined together with four primary objectives for the regional broadband project: inclusivity, high speed, reliability, and reasonable costs. The license and franchise agreements will be brought to the four towns’ councils for consideration in the coming months. Public Safety: The Mead Police Department has been training on two new software systems: Tracker SAFE and Central Square. Tracker SAFE, implemented in April, is an evidence management solution used for sustainable, efficient, and effective operations. Central Square is used for computer aided dispatch which with maximize the collective resources of all agencies in
Weld County to cut down response time. Weld County Regional Communication Center will implement the new software in August. Fiscal Stability: We currently have an opening on the Finance Committee. The Finance Committee makes recommendations on the Town budget, long-range financial plan, and investments. They monitor the Town’s cash management and assist in the selection of investment facilitators. Interested residents should have a background in finance and/or business management. Connected Community: The Mead Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting the annual Summer Block Party at Mead Town Park on June 11. The Summer Block Party features vendors, food trucks, a beverage garden, kid’s activities, and live music. often take for granted. Here in Frederick, we are living at the edge of what was once called the Great American Desert. Slightly more than half of all the water that we use is not for drinking, cooking, or bathing; instead, it is used outside of our houses for our yards and recreation. This is why we must be conscious of our outdoor water usage, and we must take measures to conserve this precious resource. The town has long-range plans to preserve and conserve our water resources now and in the future. Smart Homes
Technology is giving us the ability to have a “smart home”. With lower prices and more widespread marketing, many people are now purchasing and using smart home technologies. Many of these things deal with items that we already use, it just brings the item to your fingertips. Here are some of the applications: Smart Locks – augmenting existing deadbolt systems through wireless protocols, like Bluetooth, in order to allow your smart phone to become a key into your home. You can assign digital keys to visitors and check the status of the lock when you are away. Smart Doorbells – provides you an easy way to see who is at your door, regardless of your location. Potentially adding peace of mind, security and convenience. Smart Indoor Air Quality Sensors – can measure potentially dangerous gases such as carbon monoxide and dioxide, particulate matter, volatile organic compounds, as well as Since 1980

temperature and humidity. You can have a sense of what your indoor air quality is and take action to resolve issues. Smart Leak Detectors – useful for anyone worried about water damage. Can be used for sump pits, septic systems or basement areas to alert you if water reaches a certain level. Smart Security Cameras – provide the ability to keep an eye on things in and around your home. Often motion activated to let you know when someone is there. Smart Speakers – not only for controlling music or a Q&A resource, but can serve as controllers for some of the other devices in your home. Smart Lights – have a cool factor with all of the possible color combinations and can also improve the user’s quality of life. Smart Thermostats – give you the ability to customize the heating and cooling from anywhere. Smart Hubs – can streamline your experience by bring all your Smart devices together into one place. Like with anything else, there are pros and cons to these technologies, including how they can affect the purchase or sale of a home. Make sure you discuss with your Realtor things like: Do you really want to hear what buyers are saying about your home? How are negotiations effected by knowing someone might be listening? What devices are included in the sale? What passwords need to be changed for the buyer? What personal data is being collected and what is it used for?

Health&WELL BEING Food for the Soul: No Such Thing as a Free Lunch?
I grew up hearing ‘old 1999-2022 sayings’ like “God only helps those who help themselves” and “There is no such thing as a free lunch.” I would like to discuss something that Jesus did for thousands of people on a day long ago and consider why He chose to do it. Jesus and His disciples had just got off a boat in a remote area of Israel (in Mark 6:33) and a great many people got there ahead of them because they wanted more of what Jesus had to offer. They had gone there to get some rest after intense ministry activity, but when they went ashore, there in front of them was “a great multitude”. Probably the disciples were greatly disappointed since they had been promised some R&R, but Jesus only saw needy people, and Mark records that “He felt compassion for them because they were like sheep without a shepherd, and He began to teach them many things.” How full is YOUR compassion tank? Do you see needy people as a nuisance or lazy or in your way? Or do you choose at times to show compassion? If compassion is the furthest thing from your mind, you will miss many opportunities to serve your fellow man. None of us are Jesus, but we are called by Him
to show compassion to others, so it is right to do good when we can, especially when the opportunity is right in front of you! Then another compassion event occurs. The day is getting late, and the disciples come to Jesus with a great idea- ‘Send these people to Safeway to find some food and we’ll be able to get the rest we came here for.” But He answered them and said, “You give them something to eat!” But they quickly responded, “We can’t afford it; it would cost way too much.” And hence comes the lesson, as Jesus tells the disciples to assess their resources. They come back to Him with a paltry sum- “Five loaves and two fish.” Then without thought of how little is available, Jesus invites the crowd to recline on the green grass in groups and get ready to eat. They comply, and He takes the 5 small loaves and the two fish, “and looking up toward heaven, He blesses the food, and broke the loaves, and He kept giving them to the disciples to set before the crowd, and He divided the two fish among them all.” And Mark records that “they ALL ate and were satisfied.” Two very different perspectives are present, that of the disciples and that of the Lord. The disciples were looking at the size of their problem instead of the size of their God. The twelve see the available resources
as totally inadequate, while Jesus sees 5 loaves and 2 fish plus God the Father. The point is NOT how much Jesus had to work with, but Who He was. As the Son of God this small amount of food could have been stretched to feed a million, though there were ‘only’ about 10,000 there that day. Think about this other food fact from Hebrew history. God fed 2 million Hebrews as they wandered in the wilderness for 40 years with the bread of heaven called manna. And He didn’t have a manna factory in heaven cranking it out day by day. He simply spoke it into existence as He did the world we inhabit. From nothing He made a lot of something, so it is no trick for Jesus to make a feast for multitudes from a kid’s lunch! When we give what we have with a willing heart we’ll get to watch Him multiply it right before our eyes. Jesus blessed what they had, because unblessed it would never be enough. Jesus broke the bread, because unbroken it would be utterly insufficient. Maybe one reason WE are not more freely given to compassion is that we are not yet properly broken. A boy supplied, and Jesus multiplied, while the disciples delivered, and everyone got fed. One lad made a personal sacrifice and 10,000 people were blessed. And then there were leftovers! 12 baskets full- one
for each disciple to carry- far more than they began with. Never doubt God’s ability to supply our needs. When we offer the Lord our time, talent, and treasure He will multiply it for His glory. Matthew Henry said, “The presence of Christ will turn a wilderness into a paradise.” And that is what we see in this slice of Jesus’ ministry. People were fed spiritually and physically by Him, and He wants that today as well. Yielded to Him is not only the best place to be anywhere on the planet, but also the safest. Standing with Jesus will always yield good results, so make it your ambition to walk always with Him and see amazing things unfold in your own life. Three Reasons to Drink Water Do you know how much water you drink each day? Have you ever measured exactly how much you do drink? Or perhaps you really don’t drink water but rather drink lots of coffee, tea, or other drinks. Plain water and hydrating foods are the best for hydration. It is recommended to drink half your body weight in ounces or no less than 64 ounces. According to the Institute of Medicine, almost 75% of Americans are chronically dehydrated. Why is drinking water so important? 1 - Every part of your body is comprised of water. 2 - You lose water all day long, even while sleeping, through normal daily bodily functions and activities. 3 – Lack of water contributes to medical problems. Your skin, lungs, kidneys, GI tract, bones, blood, joints, heart, brain, basically your entire body, inside-and-out is made up of water. I like to say your organs are like flowers. If they aren’t watered, they will wither and perhaps even “die”. Visual, isn’t it? But so true. Water to your body is like oil for your car. It lubricates all the moving parts. You can only survive for about 3 days without water but you could survive 1 - 2 months without food. That should tell you how important water really is! We lose water through daily activities like breathing, moving, and urinating. If the water that is expelled isn’t replaced, you could end up in bad shape. We replace lost water with drinking water or by eating water dense foods like melons, oranges, bell peppers, broccoli, cucumber, celery…well, you get the point. You should drink water throughout the day. Don’t guzzle at the end of day. Guzzled water is less likely to actually be absorbed and you will most likely be getting up in the middle of the night. Think of that downpour of water on your garden. Too much water at once and it just runs right off. Lastly, without water health issues are real! If you aren’t hydrated enough, you may notice “low level” health concerns like: brain fog, headaches, achy joints, hair loss, constipation, weight gain and so much more. On a more serious level, dehydration might increase your risk of stroke, kidney stones, renal failure, and other medical health concerns. Often because water intake is not the most pressing topic for the average clinical visit, it is often overlooked regarding patient care. If you think you’re not hydrating enough or can’t seem to figure out how to incorporate drinking water into your daily routine, reach out! This is one of the basic habits that I review with all my clients as, honestly, drinking enough water is a struggle for most people. Health&WELL BEING Your Fitness Routine This Summer With fitting all the fun events and trips in, you’re looking forward to this summer. Enjoying the outdoors is a great way to mix up your fitness routine this summer. Just be sure to keep up on your strength training too. There’s a difference between activity and exercise/training. Activity includes movement we partake in. Even though other activities are good for your health and mind for variety, they lack the kind of challenge your body needs to improve or maintain your current physical condition. Resistance or strength training allows you to build or maintain your lean muscle and your health. It helps your metabolism, bone density, and the numbers on your test results. Even 1-2 days a week, training will keep your strength, energy, and mental well-being in the right place. Ladies, if you’re looking for a new challenge
or different program my fitness group classes are a great option. The Interval/ Strength Training Classes are Mondays & Tuesdays at 8:30am & Wednesdays at 7pm. Alternative Medicine: West Nile Virus
1999-2022 Yet another baffling virus, I was recently inspired by a client to write about West Nile. She was persistent about making me understand that the existing conditions stemmed from this previously contracted virus from 1998. As with so many viruses, and is also true for West Nile, some people do not experience any symptoms, some experience severe conditions and for some, it wreaks havoc by creating a persistent, systemic inflammatory response. The lingering conditions that arise for some people may make it difficult to distinguish from other illnesses, and can therefore be dismissed as something else… completely missing the root cause. For example, lingering conditions of West Nile include decreased stamina, replaced by joint pain, sudden tiredness, fatigue and muscle aches (and a myriad list of other conditions). In health care, the term “chronic” is defined by any condition that lasts beyond six months. In Chinese medicine we refer to this as a “lingering pathogen” see last month’s article, May 2022 http://daisylear.com/ lingering-pathogen/. West Nile is quite a kunundrum, and quite frankly, I was surprised when this person began feeling better throughout each day, able to complete physically challenging work without needing to rest as often. The combination of Chinese herbal formulas and using techniques to nourish and regulate the immune system had helped beautifully. I found this outstanding pbs/nova article about West Nile that combines research with personal experiences. My client found some comfort in reading this and we hope this information helps others as well : https://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/article/post-
infection-symptoms/
Here is some dry government reading, (however just as important) taken from the
EPA.gov website: West Nile virus was first detected in the United States in 1999 and is
now the most common cause of mosquito-borne disease in the United States in most years. While many infected people feel no symptoms, others can experience symptoms such as headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash, as well as more severe damage to the central nervous system in some patients, causing encephalitis, meningitis, and occasionally death. 2 From 1999 to 2019, a total of 51,801 cases of West Nile virus disease were reported in to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Nearly half of the reported cases of people infected with West Nile virus were neuroinvasive—that is, affecting the brain or causing neurologic dysfunction. 3 Mosquitoes acquire the virus by biting infected birds, which are the main hosts of the virus. People are then infected when they are bitten by these virus-carrying mosquitoes. Most importantly, I’d like to encourage people to ask questions, keep learning and advocate for themselves especially when enduring a chronic illness. Sometimes it takes enduring commitment to disentangle pathogens from the system. More information about this and other subjects can be found on my website, daisylear.com under the articles tab. Independent vs. Assisted Living
This month, let’s take a look at Independent Living. What’s the difference between Independent and Assisted Living, and how do I know which one is the better fit? Think of an independent Living community as being “simplified living”. If you’re ready to stop doing the cleaning and maintenance of your home and have someone cook your meals, then a move to an independent living community might be perfect for you. Independent Living is just that, independent. It provides the opportunity to live in community with others who are at the same stage in life, remain active and social, and relinquish some of the everyday tasks of life that you no longer have the energy for, or care to do! Most Independent Living communities offer a variety of apartment sizes, and at least a daily meal or two as part of your rent. Transportation to and from medical appointments, shopping and activities is also provided, making the need for a car obsolete. One myth about an Independent
Living community is that there is 24-hour staff available to help in case of emergency. Although many communities have a front desk person there during business hours, there is rarely overnight staff. As is the case when you are living in your own home, emergencies are handled by calling 911. In the event your needs change slightly while living in an independent community, you can always hire private home care services to help out a few times a week, or as needed. Changing needs don’t always warrant a move to assisted living. The goal of any living situation as we age is to remain independent, engaged, and safe, and continue to have joy and purpose. SUCCESSFUL BUSINESSES
On Friday, May 6th, members of the Firestone Police Department played the Coal Ridge Middle School 8th grade boys basketball team and the Unified basketball team. The Firestone Police Department lost both games; however, everyone had a great time and it provided an opportunity for the school kids to see our officers out of uniform and connect on a more personal level. Following the game we had pizza and chatted with parents and kids. Everyone had a great time.

Firestone’s Citizen Police Academy Community engagement is critical in building trust between a community and its police department. The Firestone Police Department’s latest community outreach is the upcoming Citizens’ Police Academy (CPA). The CPA is a 9-week “academy” where citizens will have the opportunity to learn about the operations of the Firestone Police Department. The Citizens’ Police Academy speakers (mostly Law Enforcement personnel) will provide lectures, demonstrations, and an opportunity for hands-on participation in the areas of crisis negotiation, traffic enforcement/crash investigation, use of force, intermediate weapons (i.e. Taser), and more. We anticipate the first class to start in early September and ending between the first and second week of November. There will be limited capacity filled on a first come, first serve basis. Information on when and how to sign up for participation in the CPA will be provided at a later date. If you are interested in participating in or have questions regarding the CPA please email them to Betty Heath at begeheath690@aol.com.
