What’s On My Mind

Kelly Martindale, Publisher

Seek peace and pursue it. Psalm 34:14

Face-to-face with the Girl Who Caused My Daughter's Death

A

ugust 2, 1990 will forever be the most tragic day of my life. On that day, my entire world changed forever. It changed so significantly, that NOTHING has been the same since. What happened? Mid-morning, that day, my daughter was hit by a car driven by a 19-yr-old girl, I’ll call Shelly. Alisha died six days later. She was one month from her 10th birthday and going into the 5th grade at Burlington Elementary School in Longmont. Why am I telling you this? Because the memories of what happened trapped me in pain. It was difficult to not hate the person responsible for Alisha’s death. It was excruciating to complete even minimal daily tasks, yet alone care for my other three children. For most of 25 years my heart was broken. Looking at life through the lens of a broken heart, or an angry heart, complicates the ability to share love and intimacy with others. A broken, angry, unforgiving heart cannot be fully invested in anybody or anything. Lots of money, big-boy/girl toys, fancy cars or clothes or jewels; nothing comforts a hurting heart. There is not enough sleep, pills or alcohol to numb the mind-altering pain. Death, loss of career, rape, abuse, chronic disease or pain, isolation…what event(s) tarnishes your life? And how do you, how did I, move forward from a tremendous tragedy? The easy answer would be to say it was all God. But God doesn’t MAKE anybody do anything. So, the truthful answer is…one agonizing day at a time. I cried buckets of tears until I thought my head would explode. I slept a lot. I spent 18 years on

anti-depressants. I went into unimaginable debt trying to cover up grief and sorrow. My motto was, “There’s not enough tequila.” Was…was my motto. The last five years, or so, have been very different, extremely healing. What changed? Me, my direction, my thoughts, my dreams…I changed. How? Again, one day at a time, one thought at a time, one right turn instead of a left turn at a time. But howwwww? I asked God to help me heal. I didn’t like my gray life. I wanted life in full color again. After so many years I was finally ready to change the course of my journey. But first I had to understand that all that had happened in my life, from a child to that day, was ALL a part of my journey on this earth. Each event, good or bad, fun or horrible, has made me who I am. And second, I learned to accept me for me. I always wanted others to accept me but guess what? I had to learn to like me and be comfortable in my own skin. That is what ultimately matters. People come and go in my life, but I’m stuck with me so it’s better that I accept who I am. Then third, (which should have been first but I’m a slow learner) I stepped back to see what path I was ready to follow… the best path, the one God has for me to follow. I was created for a reason and I have a purpose for my life. Sometimes, in striking clarity, I realize that purpose. The rest of the time, I get up, I work, I play a little, and I spend time with family. Fourth, I pray, A LOT. I don’t make hasty decisions much anymore. And I

consider what is going on in my heart most of the time. I want my heart healed and free from anger, sorrow, unforgiveness, and any darkness. It’s not about “thinking positive” but about freedom. I want to be free from ALL that hinders me from doing what I’m supposed to do while I am on this earth. I choose to pursue freedom. For instance, in October, I felt a strong need to meet with Shelly, the girl (now woman) who caused Alisha’s death. I have been praying for her for nearly 28 years. I had been trying to find her for about 25 years. And two years ago, I connected with her on Facebook. It was time to meet with her, in person. She, her mom and grandma, were at Alisha’s funeral and I spoke with her for a few minutes then. But it was time to really communicate with her. What a blessing, I think for both of us, to sit, face-to-face. To cry together about how our lives are so different from what we thought would be. To share how we are better, choose to be better…not bitter. That evening in October, was the finishing touch to healing my heart from the horrible mid-morning accident that changed both of our lives; and the lives of my children and extended family and my soon to be husband. I had finally asked God to “help” me heal…he doesn’t just snap His finger and BAM I’m healed. It takes time. When I was ready, I asked, and He started His amazing work. Well…He had been working all along. But I found healing, forgiveness, and love happen much faster when I am willing.

We Choose to be better...not bitter

Some thoughts on travel in 2018

A

s I sit here thinking about what to write about for my monthly article; I look out the window and see the snow and cold outside. But then, I look at my pictures and photos on my office wall. I think about all of the wonderful memories that travel has created for me and my family. I look back over the years to the Caribbean cruises, the trip to Sedona with friends, the Black Hills, Tahiti, Costa Rica, Greece, our European river cruises in France and, of course, one of my favorites, the Danube River Cruise just 2 years ago. Too many to mention really. As I think about these, I also look forward to our upcoming group cruise to Alaska and how fun that will be with some exceptional folks. The planning, the ideas for a fun experience for all is top of my mind. To be sure that every detail is put together so I can reduce their stress in planning and make their memories of this vacation top of their mind in the years to come. A travel agent (consultant, advisor), helps their clients ensure they are receiving the vacation experience that’s right for them. It’s so easy to find a low priced travel “deal” but if it’s not the right experience, the low price won’t matter in the end.

Planning your vacation can be exhausting, searching the internet for ideas, prices, looking at reviews that may or may not be accurate (according to news reports). These can be fun but stressful. Handing this job over to someone who has been there; has contacts and connections will help you look at your “wall” of memories and remember how memorable they were. What memories have you developed on your past vacations, what memories do you hope to have on your next welldeserved vacation? Destinations that are popular this year in 2018 include Italy, Ireland, European River Cruises and for experiences, guided tours and special occasion family reunions. Please allow me to help you plan for your next vacation memory. Judy Bakanec, Going Places Travel in Frederick. 303-485-9930 or judy@ goingplacestravel.com.

rom the first minute of entering the all-new Frederick nail business, Pearl Nails & Spa, I was made to feel welcome and special. I’d seen signage inviting me to the new location and received a special invitation in the mail, all offering me 30% off any service. Pearl Nails & Spa is located in Clark Plaza at 332 5th Street in downtown Frederick, just east of Oak Street. Clients may walk-in or call to set up an appointment at 303.484.8432. Their services include Basic/Deluxe/ R o y a l manicures and pedicures, w a x i n g , and polish changes. Each service has many options to choose from including combination packages.

Besides regular manicures, clients can choose many nail enhancements. Pearl Nails & Spa offers gel, solar and acrylic. They have dip powders, now trending, in a huge variety of colors. Their nail tips come in many, many different colors too! They have 1000 polish colors to choose from including MoodGlow that changes with your moods and Glow-in-Dark polish for those special nights! Waxing services offer brow to toes and everything in between in a private, clean room. In fact, the first thing I noticed about Pearl Nails & Spa was how clean the whole business is. I had a pedicure along with a friend of mine. We were both impressed by the clean and sterile environment. The foot baths had liners placed before

filling with water. Every tool they used came from an unopened sterile package. We had choices of what our feet soaked in: Renew, Energy, Detox or Calm. These included scrubs and lotions. The entire service was very calming and professional. We were offered a choice of beverages and relaxed while listening to soothing music. It was relaxing, and my pedicure still looks wonderful. If you are looking for nail or waxing services, stop in at Pearl Nails and Spa. You can also them at www.Facebook. com/PearlNailFrederick.

There May Be A Problem When You Start Buying Pets For Your Pets

L

ori Brandenburg loves animals. She owns and operates Pretty Pets Grooming, north of Longmont. She and her husband, Rod, own eleven acres where their pets literally live the “Life of Riley.” Their pets include 13 chickens (it was 24 a few months ago but the coyotes think their barn is a Chic Fil-A drive through) one quarter horse named Z, three dogs, and three cats. Their goat died recently, so the horse was lonely. Here lies the fabric for the story. When should you buy pets for your pets? At one time the Brandenburg’s had four horses, when their two daughters still lived at home. Z was lonely when the other horses died. The horse Z, needed a friend, a soul mate, a pet.

Lori acquired a goat. Actually, she acquired three goats, but that’s another story. So, when the goat passed away in October of 2017, daughters Katey and Sara figured a mule, actually a mini mule would be the perfect pet for Z. The new mule would replace the pet goat. Hey, the mules might even keep the coyotes away! A key selling point to husband Rod who gets to buy hay, haul hay and clean up the hay after the digestive process. Husband, Rod gets to fix fence, fix gates, and fix the barn for some of their other pets besides chickens, 30 or so pigeons, assorted robins, starlings, doves, magpies, crows, sparrows, etc. You get the picture! Come one come all! So, our girls figured we needed a mule.

Well as luck would have it they didn’t find just one mini mule; the girls found a mother-daughter duo. According to the owner they shouldn’t, they couldn’t, they wouldn’t survive separately so you really need to get them both. “Hey dad, with two mules, especially a mother-daughter team they’ll definitely keep the coyotes away.” So how does a dad argue with that logic?! That’s what happens when you start buying pets for your pets. Seriously though, were blessed to have the place and the space to have this many pets. Currently we collect six to eight eggs a day. Farm eggs taste so much better than store bought eggs! Z loves to go for rides. A neighbor

borrows him every now and then for riding lessons. Friends, and relatives enjoy riding our “bomb proof” Z. A friend from China, who had never even seen a horse before came out for a ride with Lori recently. The friend who is in her 50’s acted giddy as a little girl as she took her first horseback ride. Lori enjoys showing the younger generation just where eggs come from and loves to imitate the rooster crowing for her friends and customers. Seriously though how many pet groomers can imitate a DOMINANT ROOSTER?

Celebrating the Legacy of Carmen DeSantis Carmen was one of the first people to really welcome me when I moved to Frederick in 1995. We first met at the Frederick Post Office and we’ve had many wonderful visits there, since then. I count him as my friend, along with his wife, Anna and his three children. I am privileged to be a part of honoring him for his 90th birthday on March 4th.~ Kelly Martindale ife-time Frederick resident, Carmen DeSantis was born in Italy, but he came to America, already a citizen of the United States at the tender age of eight. Spending 82 years in Colorado, makes you a native Coloradoan in my book. He still lives in the house he and his father built. How is it that Carmen was already a U.S. Citizen? In 1895, Carmen’s grandfather traveled to New York City where he worked on building the subway system. At the end of a year’s work, employees were given US citizenship, not just for themselves but for their extended family. His grandfather and also his father, made many trips to America for work. Carmen’s grandfather and father worked in mines in Trinidad for 25 years. As with many Italian families, children lived with parents, grandparents, aunts and uncles; life centers around family. Carmen lived with his mom and grandma while his dad and grandfather worked in America. When World War II was happening, the American Embassy contacted the DeSantis family and urged them to board one of the last two ships to America where they would then be safe. On April 22, 1936, Carmen, his mom and sister, arrived in Colorado. They lived in Lafayette with his aunt and uncle until his father hired on at Dacono’s Sterling Mine in 1937. Carmen’s family then moved to Frederick and has been here since. Carmen had planned to work at the mine after he graduated from high school in 1947. Tabby Newcomb, superintendent of the mine, told Carmen to buy his miner’s belt and hat and get a trainer to teach him. When it came time to hire on Carmen’s dad told Tabby that if Carmen worked there, he would quit. Tabby Newcomb needed the elder DeSantis so Carmen pursued work in construction. Carmen worked construction for Hutchison and Kerry until he was drafted into the Army during the Korean War. That was in 1949. His first order was to go to Korea but that was changed. He was then ordered to go to Ft. Sill, OK. Six men from this area had the same orders so Carmen’s dad drove them to Ft. Sill. Once there, the orders changed again and this time they were headed to Germany. While in Germany, Carmen was located just 700 miles from his home town in Italy. He wanted to go home for

L

Christmas, but he did not have enough time in the military yet for a furlough. He pressured the commander enough that they gave Carmen a furlough to head home. (I think he’s been headstrong his whole life!) While home in Cansano, Italy, he went to church with family and during the service he saw someone he wanted to meet. He inquired about her and found his family knew her family. He instigated an invitation to her home and was introduced to her before his leave was up. They wrote letters while he as in the Army and their relationship grew. Carmen shares how much he loved her parents and said they were the nicest people ever. Carmen would send her flowers but, of course, they were dead when they arrived via the postal service. He sent her perfume and other gifts until they married in 1952. They’ve been married 65 years. After Carmen was discharged from the Army, he once again found little work. However, with encouragement from his dad, Anna and the ex-superintendent of the schools, Carmen started college in 1953. Five years later, with no breaks, Carmen received his AB, Masters and his Administrator’s Certificate. He ended up with 65 hours over in continuing education and became a teacher and part-time principal. Of course, that had its own bit of trials. He wasn’t able to get full time work locally. One day he received an interview and then a contract in a small mountain town. Carmen didn’t really want to work there because Anna was pregnant and the hospital was quite a distance from their home. They were worried about weather conditions and being able to get medical help should they need it. Thankfully, the local superintendent wanted Carmen bad enough that they negotiated terms and kept him here. Frederick High School was

his first teaching position. Carmen said, “I spent 32 years as a teacher and I enjoyed every bit of it.” His eyes still shine at the memories. It is one of his fondest memories. Of course, over 90 years, there are many more fond memories and one of them is serving on the Frederick Council starting in 1964. Carmen DeSantis served on the Frederick Town Board for 40 years. He recalls that there was virtually no money to work with. In fact, the Town of Frederick budget was $85,000 for a whole year. He remembers in the 1940’s, the board went door to door to citizen’s home collecting money so they could pay the application fee to bring electricity to Frederick. They raised $357 and eventually had two telephones poles that served as the substation with a transformer. “We couldn’t spend money because it wasn’t there to spend,” says Carmen. “We were wise with the expenditures and citizens and board were united and worked together.” I asked Carmen how things have changed since. His response—”Citizens need to be involved in their communities.” Carmen says, “The Town Board is elected to be the voice of the people. Those serving are to make decisions for the good of all the people.” Carmen’s passionate answers show that decisions now, just as back then, should benefit the whole of Frederick, not just a few. “Government should never be self-serving. Government serves the people,” he explained. “It’s supposed to serve the people.” At his 2004 retirement from Frederick City Council, many past Senators such as Ben Nighthorse Campbell, Wayne Allard, and Mark Udall, each honored Carmen. One Senator gave him a flag that flew over the state capital, but Carmen gave it to the town of Frederick.

Carmen’s dad also served on the Town Council as well as his son, Sam DeSantis. Passion for family, community and country runs deep in the DeSantis blood. Carmen served with many good men and women on town council, and with the citizens of the town, they accomplished a lot of good things - establishment of an electrical system, paved streets, and more. Carmen is also proud of his role in the founding of Miner’s Day and forming the first Miner’s Day committee. He is also proud of his work with his friend, Charlie Klarich – town manager, to develop what is now Bella Rosa Golf Course, owned by the Town of Frederick. Carmen loves this town. How could he not. He’s had many opportunities to live elsewhere but has chosen to make Frederick his life-long home. Likewise, each of Carmen’s three children live in Frederick. Carmen has been asked why his children continue to live here? He says, “They like the community. Plus, they think a lot of Anna and I,” he says, eyes glistening with emotion. i·con ‘ī kän; noun: a person…regarded as a representative symbol of something. synonyms: idol, paragon, hero…

This describes Carmen. He symbolizes an honorable human being: He loves God, people and his country. He takes action to pursue and defend his passions. He is loving and kind. He is a great role model. Frederick has been blessed to have him in the community. Frederick is better, because of Carmen DeSantis.

Happy Birthday, Carmen. You are loved. From your family, your friends, and others who know you

My life experience has given me the diverse background that includes large and small business, public infrastructure, manufacturing, retail, agriculture, and construction. Sitting on the planning commission for the past 2 years has given me the opportunity to familiarize myself with the Land Use Code and the procedures of the city government. I have attended board meetings on a regular basis and review the agendas to follow the issues that will affect Frederick. I find it very important to understand the needs and wants of the residents and business owners. With a majority of my work coming from the Carbon Valley, I drive throughout our community daily and talk to business owners and residents from all of our neighborhoods. Reaching out and discussing needs, goals, and concerns of Frederick is the only way you can represent the community effectively. You will be receiving your ballot the second week of March. Please vote for Rusty ONeal for Frederick Trustee. Fill Free to contact me if you have any questions or to show support at (720) 210-3664.

The Oak Street Hair Studio is celebrating its third anniversary, but each woman involved has many years’ experience to share with their clients. Owner, Bethany Wellbrock, (in photo left to right) says, “No other career on earth would allow me to connect with a stranger in such a special, emotional way. My hope is that the client and I, each, walk away forever changed by the connection.” In her 27 years in the business, she especially enjoys updo’s, color and eyelash extensions. “I get the opportunity to make them feel beautiful on the inside and enhance the beauty on the outside. I hope I can make a difference as they have made such a difference in my life.” Tammie Avalos is a licensed professional hair designer and has been at Oak Street Hair Studio for two years. “2017 was the best year yet in my 34 years in the business,” says Tammie. esidents of Frederick, it is time once again to make your choices of the ELECTION CANDIDATES!! In April on the first Tuesday, Frederick will once again have an Election take place to fill 3 TRUSTEE positions on the Frederick Town Board. We the people will decide whom we (you & I) would like to have represent us, the residents of Frederick. Sometimes these kinds of decisions are not difficult to make and other times in towns, communities, and bigger cities it becomes complicated. That should not be the case for the Town of Frederick. The Residents of Frederick, I know in fact are, knowledgeable and well aware of what today’s society and population growth is doing in the state of Colorado. It is indeed growing at an exhilarating rate that the older generation would compare it to when the grasshoppers swarmed thru the plains ravishing any and all the growth of not only crops, but everything that they could destroy. It happened again when the multitudes of rabbits did the same thing. Although this all happened a lot of years ago when the population of people wasn’t what it is today. That same kind of effect on your way of life and living is indeed affected by how your town government is focused on the future, not only in the short term, but also focused on the long term. Having hopefully got your attention, now I tell whom, (RESIDENTS OF FREDERICK) and why I bring all this to light. I have spoken with three candidates for the TOWN BOARD TRUSTEE’S positions. The three people whom in my opinion are capable of being on the town board are as follows: 1. Dan March- Dan brings not only life experience, but he is retired from the Denver Water Board, where he was involved in all aspects of everything that is water related. Water is one of the biggest commodities in today’s society and for every town. His ability and willingness to have an open mind on the other issues will bring different solutions, we as the town board may be able to consider. 2. Garret Frase- Garret is the youngest out of the three gentlemen I’m putting my support behind. He brings

The latest additions to the hair studio are Kayla Olson and Di Letkomiller. They made the short move across the street from their salon Sweet Magnolias. They made the move recently after 10 years at that location. Kayla Olson has been a Cosmetologist for 18 years. She’s excited for the new experiences to be had at Oak Street Hair Studio. She specializes in color and highlights. Kayla says, “I love the creativity involved of giving someone a new look.” Kelly Martindale’s sister was extremely happy with her new cut and color at a recent appointment. Long-time and new clients can call Kayla at 303.263.6562. And on the far right of the photo, Di Letkomiller invites her clients and any new ones who want to utilize her 30+ years’ experience. Di is in the studio Tuesdays through Saturday. She specializes in color and cuts and has been in Frederick over 13 years. She says, “I appreciate everyone’s loyalty over the years and I’m happy to be joining the Oak Street Hair Studio team.” To make appointments with Di call 303.903.0949. While each of these women enjoy certain services, they all do it all, i.e. haircuts, colors, perms, highlights and lowlights, updo’s, barbering, and more. They have a wealth of experience and want to help you look and feel wonderful inside and out. Call Oak Street Hair Studio to make an appointment or ask questions at 720.428.8067.

the new and often overlooked aspects of the residents of Frederick (THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE). He is ambitious and excited about not only working for the residents and try to lead the town in the direction that will encourage the people to appreciate what is being done by the town board of Frederick, but also becoming more involved with what the town is doing throughout each year. 3. Rusty O’Neil- Rusty has been involved with the community in a couple of different aspects. He has been outspoken on different issues in the past and helped the company that put in the storm system among other things. He is currently on the planning commission of the town. One thing above all, Rusty realizes that the past is done, and the Present and the Future is what we, the residents, need to focus on and that the people of Frederick may be assured that (HONESTY & DOING THE RIGHT THING), is what’s being decided by the town board. LASTLY- I endorse all 3 of these Candidates on the Ballet of the Election in April. Each one of them brings different aspects from the residents of Frederick. They all bring new and different views and opinions of how the town should focus on the Present and the Future. Every town grows and learns from the experiences it has endured. Life, that its leaders have lived personally, provides them with the knowledge to find the solutions that are needed. On March 8th 2018 there will be a forum where the Candidates will answer questions that have been drawn up by a panel (hopefully residents of Frederick). Residents will have the opportunity to talk with all the Candidates. March 12th your mail in ballets will be sent to you; (PLEASE READ CAREFULLY AND READ ALL THE INFORMATION ON ALL CANDIDATES BEFORE MARKING YOUR X BESIDE THE CANDIDATES YOU WANT TO BE ELECTED TO THE TOWN BOARD OF FREDERICK). THREE THINGS I STATE LAST: TRUTH = HONESTY JUSTICE = DOING THE RIGHT THING PRESERVATION OF MANKIND = WORKING FOR THE PEOPLE

fell in love with the Town of Frederick when I b e g a n working for Georgia Boys BBQ in 2014, so much so, that I moved into this community in 2016. I grew up in a small town so keeping that close community feel is very important to me because I know what it has to offer. Coming from the hospitality industry, I am versed in connecting with people, and the citizens of Frederick offer something special. Witnessing firsthand the people of Frederick coming together in some truly trying times was amazing. I consider myself very fortunate to be a part of what makes Frederick great as a collective. As a General Manager, I am a tenured leader and I will want to work alongside the members of this community. Having served many of you over the years, I believe in working for the people. It would be an honor to represent the voice of the community to enhance the Town of Frederick. In my line of work others have always come first, which is why I think I will be a superior candidate to select for the Frederick Board of Trustees.

ello neighbors. I seek the opportunity to serve you as Firestone Trustee and humbly ask for your vote in our upcoming election. With your support, I will be an active leader that tirelessly advocates for the good of the community. Anticipating growth of nearly 40% in the next seven years; Firestone needs strong, co-orientated, leadership in its government, businesses, and citizenry. Working together, I believe we can improve upon a good foundation and advance Firestone in a way that other towns and cities look to as a model of thoughtful and coordinated development. Transportation, for example, has been identified as a critical need in our community. Since Firestone is not committed to participation in any existing transportation district, Firestone is in the enviable situation of being able to determine its own path in this area. I believe Firestone may best be served by entering into co-op agreements with private companies or non-profits such as Via, which serves nearby communities. By seeking local solutions, not only will we bring a much needed service to our community, we will realize gains from the added jobs associated with those solutions. Many of us have also been concerned

with personal budget strains that have been realized over the last few years due to increased taxes and assessments. I believe that Firestone can utilize a two pronged approach to increase revenue organically, which in turn reduces the need for additional tax related ballot measures. The first approach involves attracting retail, dining, and additional small business to our community. These highly sought after businesses will not only bring services that many of us long for, they will keep sales tax revenues in Firestone. Secondly, Firestone must push for the creation its own zip code. It is widely thought that tax revenue owed to Firestone is being diverted to other municipalities because we do not have our own zip code. The creation of our own zip code will allow the State to better direct revenue where it is rightly due, benefiting us all. Thank you for taking a moment to learn more about me and part of my vision for Firestone. I respectfully ask for your vote on April 3rd. am running for re-election to the Board of Trustees and hope to earn your support to continue with a second term as Trustee. I have lived in Firestone for 16 years – first in Historic Firestone, and more recently in Oak Meadows. My husband, daughters, and I have made Firestone our home and cannot imagine ever wanting to live anywhere else. This is truly a remarkable community. My two daughters attend Coal Ridge Middle School and Prairie Ridge Elementary. I have been on the Board of Trustees for almost 4 years and have enjoyed every moment of the experience. It has been a great honor for me to be able to represent my fellow citizens. While on the Board, I have had the opportunity to serve on the Firestone Cultural Committee, and I have been elected Chair of the Firestone Urban Renewal Authority for 3 consecutive years. I am a legislative liaison for the Board and have testified in front of the Colorado State Legislature on Bills that would impact the town in some way. Another piece of my current duties is working with

the Colorado Municipal League (CML). CML is a body that represents all municipalities in the state of Colorado. I am the Firestone representative on the CML Policy Committee where proposed bills are evaluated and municipalities determine which ones to support or oppose. In 2016 I was elected to the CML Executive Board by a vote of all member municipalities. It is a great benefit to Firestone to have that kind of exposure to State Government, and I have had the honor of meeting many State Legislators, the Governor, Lt Governor, Mayor of Denver, Senators Bennett and Gardner, and many the Colorado Representatives. My heart truly is with the citizens of Firestone. I serve on the Board to represent all of you. I strive to be accessible to anyone who would like to speak with me, and I vow to speak honestly about the issues and opportunities facing our town. I am more than happy to answer any questions you might have. Please vote for me on April 3rd 2018.

positions for Town Trustee in the 2018 election. I am asking for your vote. My wife, Jennifer and I have lived in Firestone since 2014. We moved to Firestone and have truly been taken by the small-town warmth and the friendships we have made since we have been here. I am a Colorado native, raised in Longmont and Jennifer, also a Colorado native, was raised in Dacono, so we both know firsthand the history of the Tri-town/ Carbon Valley area. I have been in the fire service for 33 years and am currently a Lieutenant with the City of Boulder FireRescue Department. It has always been my passion to serve others, especially when they need it the most. I am also one of the co-founders of the St. Vrain Christmas Walk. The idea of this event was to do create an event that gave to the community. So far it has been a wonderful success. In 2017 I was asked to serve on the Firestone Police Station Task Force. This was a very enlightening experience as well as a victorious one. Seeing firsthand how the citizens who were asked to serve, work together on this issue, taking input from

as many points of view as we could, and coming to agreement with each other, gave me a small glimpse of what it is like to contribute to this wonderful community. I am a person who likes to get things done. If something needs to get done and it takes someone to get “down in the trenches”, then I am willing to do that. Some of my goals, if elected, will be to keep taxes as low as reasonably possible while being mindful of what is spent. I am pro-business and believe in smart, well-planned growth. I would like to see more amenities such as sit downs restaurants, places for family entertainment, such as the completion of Central Park, and more options for shopping but still maintaining the smalltown atmosphere we enjoy today. I would like to hear some of your goals for our town. I will be very diligent in listening to what YOU have to say, and I will remain open-minded. I believe this should be the #1 mission of a true representative of any citizenry. I would be honored if you would vote for me in the upcoming mail-in election on April 3rd. You can contact me on Facebook at “Don Conyac for Firestone Trustee” or donfortrustee@gmail.com

ith 20 years of serving our nation, and as a recently retired Marine, I want to continue serving by helping the community I live in. The Town of Firestone is running well and needs strong leadership to keep it on track. I am not seeking election with an agenda and I am committed to continuing the stewardship to keep Firestone the place we have come to love. I am aware of the many issues facing our town with the long-term planning and development goals for the greater area. Firestone currently faces serious decisions with future development and improvement. For the past three years I have watched our town grow and I am committed to being a part of the solutions that meet our needs as residents as well as maintain the attractive qualities that make Firestone a great place to live. I believe in the public process and local governments should be wellinformed on the issues; trustees should listen, understand the needs of the people, and work to meet those needs. I’m not a politician. I am a father, husband and involved community member, which

gives me a perspective on what really matters in our community. With education and experience to do what it takes, I’ll take the time to listen and act in the best interest of the citizens of Firestone. The priorities I see for our local government: 1. To continue to place emphasis on economic development. My hope is for the town to assist with the development of more economic growth in retail, restaurants and entertainment opportunities. 2. To support the Parks and Recreation Department with their efforts to continue to make improvements to recreational facilities and to provide for more family oriented amenities in Firestone. 3. To support all town employees (in their respective departments) with their efforts to provide outstanding customer service to all citizens in our community. Additionally, to ensure all employees are working in a safe and healthy environment. 4. To plan and prioritize future infrastructure improvements for the town. This would include buildings, streets, utilities, and other capital improvements.

FIRESTONE Endorsement of Bobbi Sindelar

T

oday, after finishing up some chores on our little horse ranch here in Wyoming, I had a phone conversation with Bobbi Sindelar. She told me about her desire to serve as the mayor for one of America’s greatest towns - Firestone, CO! I was delighted to hear about her ideas for the community and her passion for leading. While it has been a few years since I worked with Mrs. Sindelar on the Firestone town board, her optimism is just as refreshing now as it was then. In my opinion, serving as a mayor is an important role. The mayor is expected to lead with professionalism and integrity. The mayor must facilitate the process of self-governance by treating everyone, regardless of their opinions, with dignity and respect. The mayor must be sure that all options are explored and that everyone who wishes to participate is given the opportunity to contribute. The mayor must have the skills to run an effective and efficient meeting. The mayor must work hard to help fellow members of the board succeed as members of the team. The mayor must know the difference between activism and leadership. The mayor must have the courage to make decisions on both easy and difficult issues. The mayor must speak to the media accurately, thoughtfully and candidly. The mayor should visit schools and encourage students and teachers. The mayor should support police officers, firefighters and first responders. The mayor should vigorously defend the town from bullies and be willing to fight for the best interests of the town. The mayor must also be able to hear opposing points of view and consider alternative perspectives. The mayor must be able to admit when they are wrong and do what it takes to make things right. The mayor must be willing to take negative criticism and endure personal attacks on his/her character. The mayor must always remember that it is about serving people, not having your face on a billboard. Firestone deserves a mayor that can rise up to the challenge that the office demands. In my view, Bobbi Sindelar is up to the challenge. Respectfully, Chad Auer

t’s hard to believe that 12 years flies by so fast! In that time, I can say it’s truly been a privilege to become close friends with Bobbi Sindelar. In every aspect of our friendship she continually proves what I believe; that she is grounded, trustworthy, logical, educated, and a very well respected woman in our community. We served together on the Board of Trustees for the Town of Firestone, and during that time, she always put the needs and interests of Firestone as the highest priority on the agenda. When challenged with a dilemma, Bobbi looks at it from multiple points of view, contemplating options, and making sound choices. Optimism is one of her many assets, making her the kind of leader that doesn’t dwell on the negative, but rather looks for helpful solutions. Bobbi continues to serve this community with logic and fiscal responsibility. Her combination of strength and class will continue to be valuable assets while representing our community as the Mayor of Firestone. Kathryn Beiland

will begin with full disclosure for those of you who do not know me. My name is Brenda Ridgley and I am Bobbi Sindelar’s big sister. Yes, I am completely biased in my knowing that Bobbi will be a fantastic Mayor for the community that I adore. Although our closeness may disqualify my opinion for some, I want to share a few things you may not know about Bobbi and how that applies to her leadership for Firestone. First and foremost, I am personally grateful to Bobbi for homesteading in Firestone back in 2000 and then encouraging me to do the same. At the time my husband Parker and I were working in downtown Denver and after looking at every community within an hour commute, we checked out Firestone at Bobbi’s recommendation. At the time Firestone would not have been on our radar any other way. Even as a new resident, Bobbi was already championing Firestone’s merits - small town charm with vast plans for “Big City” services, many of which we enjoy today. Most people may not know about Bobbi’s business education and background as a Financial Planner which I believe

adds to her qualifications to lead a community. Shortly after moving to Firestone, Bobbi stepped away from corporate America to raise her family. I am a proud Aunt to four amazing Sindelar kids who are great students and athletes. One is currently an exchange student in China representing our Frederick High School. When her children were still young, Bobbi made the time to invest in her community hoping to make a difference….. and that she has done! From the planning commission to becoming a Trustee, she has simultaneously participated in many other outreach programs including the Parks and Trails Advisory board as a representative and chairperson. Since 2005 Bobbi has been “all in” when it comes to making Firestone better and a great place to live and raise children. Today Bobbi serves us well as Mayor Pro-Tem and in my opinion, she is the best Mayoral candidate to serve our great Town of Firestone, connecting History to Progress. Please vote Bobbi Sindelar for Firestone Mayor. Brenda Ridgley

rie voters are asked to approve Bond Issue 3A in upcoming April balloting. Typically bond issues equate to increased taxes. This $13.75m Bond Issue; for the purpose of conformance with Colorado TABOR statutes; is to authorize bond funding. Indebtedness will be repaid by building permit impact fees, not taxes. Significant considerations for Bond Issue 3A are as follows: • Voter Approval is Required Independent of the Source of Funds to Repay the Bond o Facility Impact Fees - Paid by Developers & Builders Will Be Used to Repay the Bond o Funding the Expansion – Permits Include a Dedicated Amount for Public Facility Impacts o Impact Fees Accumulated For Several Years Will Pay the Majority of the Bond Amount • Future Building Permit Impact Fees Are Confidently Anticipated to Pay the Bond Balance o Erie Residential Building Permits - Averaged 379 for Each of the Past Five Years o ONLY 100 Permits Per Year Needed to Meet the Balance of Bond Obligations

o In Process Planning for 6860 Additional Residences Confidently Assures This Number • What If 100 Permits Are NOT Issued Per YEAR? o This “WORST CASE” Scenario Would Increase the Assessed Rate by Under Two Mils This Equates to About $14 Per Year For a Residence Assessed at $400,000 • Reminder - Police Station & Court Building Bond was Approved with a Tax Increase of 3 Mils o It is Being Repaid at the Rate of 2/3 of 1 Mil • Ballots Will be Mailed to Voters ~March 12 – To Be Returned by April 3 The Building Our Future Committee recommends Erie voters indicate YES for Ballot Issue 3A. I have known Colleen for several years through the Rotary and through her support of the community events. I sincerely believe that she possesses the qualities of a great leader and she is an excellent role model for the young adults, and everyone in the community. Colleen embodies what it takes to be a leader within Rotary. Her integrity, expertise, and commitment to service makes all the qualities of an extraordinary Rotarian. Colleen is an active and visible leader in the community and in the Mead Rotary. She takes every challenge head on without reservations creating a complete success. Colleen is a strong supporter of veterans and the military. She participated and assisted in the Operation Honor this past summer bringing the community together to support military families and veterans. She also volunteers her time visiting VA Hospitals up and down the Front Range. Colleen is also working with the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Legion to bring the Gold Star Memorial Monument to Carbon Valley. Her dedication to the veterans is unquestionable as she attended the Veteran Stand Down and joined and celebrated the Military Honor Flight. Colleen has the initiative and dedication to make a significant difference to the progress of the Town of Mead and its surrounding communities. With her attitude and drive I could not think of anyone else that would represent the Town with greater honor and ensure that the people’s interest would be properly protected and represented. I confidently believe that she would perform well as Mayor. Sincerely yours, Laura Owen, Mead Resident

Jennifer Mcpherson Announces Candidacy For Mayor Of Mead

I

am Jennifer McPherson and I am running for the Mayor of Mead. Mead is where I am planting the seeds in my children for their future, where my friends live, where my community comes together as one to help one another in times of need. Mead is my home and I care very much about its future. I am an avid supporter of Honor Flight of Northern Colorado. I personally have been a guardian on two flights and still regularly meet with some of the veterans I befriended. In June of 2017 I rode my bicycle 1,000 miles in 10 days which raised over $6,000 for the cause. Additionally my elementary age kids run Jackson and Maisie’s Lemonade Stand, which in the past two events (2016 & 2017) has raised a total of $6,800 for Honor Flight and this April’s event they have a goal to raise $8,000. I am committed to bringing a much needed new approach and fresh perspective to Mead. We all know you cannot start a new chapter by re-reading the old one. As Mayor, I will use my 18 years of experience as a leader to guide the Trustees and the Town to ignite positive forward motion to benefit the citizens of Mead. Mediocrity does not fly with me - If you are going to do something, do it right or not at all. Our citizens deserve someone who has their back and who has the best interest of the town and not a personalized agenda. The citizens of Mead are our most valuable resource! They deserve town leaders who provide them with transparency, respect, with an opportunity for them to be heard, and their value recognized. All along the Front Range, growth is everywhere and Mead will not be immune to it. We need to make sure our town utilizes this growth to our advantage. And to be able to fund all the things that make our quaint farming community great, for instance, parks, trails, recreation activities for kids and teens, and elderly services are a few off the top of my head. As we grow, transportation will become a major issue. With my background in the transportation industry, I understand how to use creative funding and proactive planning to ensure our infrastructure does not fall short and to keep our systems in good working order to keep our citizens safe. I will provide more details on my Facebook page: Jennifer McPherson for Mayor as well as Meet and Greets.

Colleen Whitlow Mayor Town of Mead Integrity. Honesty. Committed... and Experienced It’s official! I am running for the Mayor of Mead. Over the past four years as a Trustee I have accomplished many uplifting things for the community. As Mayor, I can make the biggest impact by working with the other six Trustees to move the Town forward in a positive and productive manner. I have over the last four years been involved in many endeavors to shed a positive light on Mead. Mead is a small community and we as a board need to balance that with the need for revenue and growth to achieve what the majority of the Town residents want. As your Mayor, I will work to ensure that all voices are heard, that we account for the taxpayer funds the way its intended and we need to be held accountable for the tough decisions that are made. I will work with other surrounding communities to keep the lines of communication open and moving forward. Your voice is important and you need to have the ability and avenues available to let us know how you want your community shaped. I encourage each of you to come to the Town meetings and become involved. I am running for Mayor because I believe my skills and abilities to communicate and rationalize, along with my success in working collectively in a group and thinking outside the box will be a key asset and help move the Town forward in a reasonable and controlled pattern. I also believe that we need to put the people and Town of Mead first and remember that to be a great leader you must be subservient to the people you represent. Please visit my Facebook page at ColleenWhitlowForMayor at https://www. facebook.com/colleenwhitlowformayor/ and let me know if you would like to help me on this journey. I look forward to our

future together as we keep Mead a safe community that brings us together every day. Thank you for your support. Endorsement for Colleen Whitlow

I have known Colleen Whitlow for several years through our mutual efforts to start and organize an Auxiliary for VFW Post 9741. Her drive and intensity helped lead the way to the formation of this organization, and she has since been elected to the position of Auxiliary President. I have had occasion to work with her and have found it to be very positive experience each time. She has shown exemplary leadership skills, and the ability to recognize and address problems in a timely manner. She works very well with others. Thanks to Colleen, the Auxiliary is a thriving and successful organization. She recognizes talents in other people and helps people utilize those talents to benefit area veterans. She brings people together to work efficiently both individually and in group settings. Her hard work helps the community as a whole. She is an example of someone who consistently meets her civic duties. The Town of Mead would benefit immensely to have Colleen Whitlow as Mayor. Please feel free to contact me with any questions at the address below or by email at commander@vfw9741.org. Sincerely, Richard Payne, Commander, VFW Post 9741

I am a citizen of Mead, a town in a state of confusion and evolution. I am writing to state my opinions and support for Mayoral candidate Colleen Whitlow. Confident, trustworthy, honest, and sincere are only a handful of words that come to mind when I think of Mrs. Whitlow. I have witnessed her ability to envision a team of volunteers for a VFW Auxiliary, recruit the volunteers, inspire the volunteers, and lead the volunteers. These volunteers include men and women of all ages, Girl Scouts, and Boy Scouts. I am one of those volunteers in the capacity of Chaplain and Patriotic Instructor as well as the Chairman for the Gold Star Families Memorial Monument that we are bringing to the state of Colorado, perhaps even to the Town of Mead. Mrs. Whitlow has shown us all, adults and youth, how multi-tasking can be achieved with positive results and fun. She has built a great team of people who respect her leadership. Mrs. Whitlow is a patient listener, smart advisor, and even a confidant when needed. She constantly displays the maturity level of someone who should be elected to the office of Mayor for the Town of Mead. I believe that she will listen to the citizens, react with an honest and direct approach to all of our concerns and issues, and carry forth the Mayoral duties that she swears to uphold. Thank you, Patrisa McHone

M

y name is David Adams and I am running for Mead Town Trustee. As Town Trustee, I want to make sure we make “MEAD FIRST”. Why “ MEAD FIRST “? What does that mean? I love Mead and want to keep the smalltown feel. Knowing growth is MEAD FIRST coming, we need to be strategic in what we do, and that’s why we need to put “MEAD FIRST”. First in SAFETY, first in COMMUNITY, first in ECONOMY. I want to make sure we have a quality plan for the future that keeps Mead safe, communityhearted, and economically stable. I believe we can do all those things by being strategic in how we plan for the future. As Town Trustee, I hope to continue those wonderful Mead qualities by ensuring a stable and balanced government. While growth is inevitable in this booming area, it is imperative that we have a balance and put “MEAD FIRST”. We do need to be able to have quality retail to provide revenue for the town with a balance of maintaining the small-town charm. I understand that retail needed for revenue to maintain those wonderful amenities that we enjoy as well as the

A

need for maintenance of our roads and infrastructure. To get the retail, we must have a variety housing. It’s a balancing act. Ensuring growth pays its own way is ideal and we should always strive for that, however there are instances where it is not possible. Knowing those times when we should pay for necessary infrastructure to attract valuable retail is very important. We must ensure Mead comes first. We do not want to lose quality businesses to neighboring towns that result in higher traffic without any revenue. Having quality businesses located near other communities allows Mead to receive the revenue from neighboring communities. Interstate 25 is an ideal location for businesses and we should be using that asset to our advantage, while allowing the heart of Mead to remain the small town community we all know and love. I hope to have your support and vote for Town Trustee to put “MEAD FIRST”.

Bethene Ainsworth for Mead Trustee Hello, I am Bethene Ainsworth, a candidate for Mead Board of Trustees. My husband and I have lived in Mead for 28 years. We have 5 children ranging in age from 21-12. Our family has served or helped with community events and committees over the years, and spend time weekly at the Mead Community Food Bank. I have been active in coaching baseball, serving in leadership roles in the workplace, church and in the community . * I am practical, frugal, honest, organized and hard working. * I believe we need to be good stewards over the things God has given us ,providing those things we need before those we simply want. * I want to be a positive influence in helping our community grow in ways that respect our community’s past and protects our families’ futures. As the electoral season begins in the Town of Mead, I find myself driven to share an announcement that one of the Mayoral candidates for the Town of Mead recently made. Colleen Whitlow announced today following the most recent school shooting in Florida, that if elected as Mayor for the Town she would donate 25% of her Town monthly salary to the school safety programs for Mead. As a parent of three children, one in high school and two in elementary school, their safety is a constant concern for my husband and I. Just this week alone our oldest shared that there was a “fight” in the girl’s restroom and not so long ago we heard of a fight in which one girl grabbed another by the hair and through her head into the brick wall. These are regular occurrences in schools today, which is a vast difference from the experiences my husband and I had 20 years ago when we were in school. The announcement that Colleen made today only reinforced how committed she is to supporting the Town of Mead. As a parent and a resident of Mead, her message alone was enough to make me take a step back and ask myself why aren’t other political figures taking similar stances? The conclusion I came to was that it takes highly motivated individual to

say that the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few and essentially that is what Colleen’s announcement is stating. It’s not about the salary or the title, it’s about the good that she can do for this community as a whole. I encourage members of our community to really take the opportunity to gain additional insight into the Mayoral candidates. Take into consideration not only their platforms, experience, their involvement in the community, but more importantly who they are as an individual, their values, and most importantly their commitment to this town. Ask yourself, is this someone I would trust to make decisions that are in the best interest for this town? Is this someone who will take the time to do their due diligence before voting on an issue that would impact the town? I think that it is essential that our next Mayor is motivated by their integrity, drive, honesty, and wholehearted commitment to this community. So please, really take your time and get as much information as available about the candidates and make an informed decision. Personally, I am all for a candidate that is looking out for the Town but also has an eye towards the future, our children. Sincerely, Tiffany Holcomb

fter living in Mead for thirteen years and growing up in Colorado I wanted to be a part of the team who sets the direction for our town. We have already seen significant growth. I enjoy talking to residents of the town about what matters to them and working to adjust my own approach to help meet the goals that I have for Mead while understanding the expectations of our residents. I have had the opportunity already to speak to many residents of Mead and hear that a lot of what concerns them concerns me too. Communication with the town residents needs to improve as there are changes happening or that have happened without ensuring that the residents of the town have enough information to understand these changes. I want to help guide the town’s growth to focus on keeping the feeling of a small close-knit community and look for opportunities to better handle infrastructure development allowing the town to grow with limited disruptions. I am married with four children Zach (12), Ronin (11), and my twins Anni and Eiry (6). I enjoy coaching youth sports and being active volunteering with Scouts and our local schools. I have been in leadership positions for eighteen years starting as a Boy Scout. I am proud that I earned my Eagle Scout and continued to help develop young men through their program. I enjoy paintball and camping. Every Friday I post a new video answering questions from residents to YouTube and Facebook. matthewb4mead@gmail.com https://www.facebook.com/ Matthewb4Mead/ https://www.youtube.com/channel/ UCA9cx5ARnrdEWcv52CJKz-Q

On April 3rd Mead voters will have an opportunity to elect a new Mayor, and three trustees. I encourage all registered voters to exercise your right to vote, those that are not registered I urge you to register and vote. One of the candidates running for Mayor is Colleen Whitlow and as the acting Mayor Pro Tem of Mead I am endorsing Ms. Whitlow for our next Mayor. I have served with Colleen for the last four years and have observed her commitment to the success and advancement of our town. Our town is beginning to experience growth and all the challenges that come with managing that growth. The new board needs to move through the next four years with a concise strategic plan. Working closely with town staff and developers and following the direction of the new Comprehensive Plan the next board will be creating new opportunities for Mead. This will require a leader committed to the plan and the town, and Colleen Whitlow is that leader. Her demonstrated leadership has been a key to her success and her willingness to get involved and understand all the aspects of moving the town forward. Managing growth while maintaining the small town atmosphere that many residents desire is instrumental and Colleen clearly understands that goal. Colleen has demonstrated her devotion and dedication for the town as is evidenced by her involvement in all aspects of town improvement. Her continued involvement in the community has been: z As the current Director at Denver Regional Council of Governments (DRCOG) z Co-founder of Mead’s Farmers Market z A committee member of the Downtown Revitalization Committee z A key contributor and participant to numerous town sponsored events such as 9Health Fair, Community Day/Sugarbeet festival and many others She also holds other positions at the Mead Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Carbon Valley VFW, Mountain View Fire and Rescue etc. Colleen has also shown her commitment to our country serving in our armed forces, and as a veteran is very involved in veteran affairs especially for the veterans in Mead. While some people may look at this as to much involvement I look at it as her diverse knowledge of the current environment and her ability to use this knowledge for the benefit of Mead. Colleen has the necessary energy, patience and dedication to serve as our next Mayor, please join me in voting for Colleen Whitlow for Mayor. A vote for Colleen Whitlow is a vote for Mead. Herman Schranz, Mayor Pro Tem, Mead

Area Mayors’ Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings FIRESTONE MAYOR, PAUL SORENSEN

z On Tuesday, April 3, registered voters in Firestone’s regular municipal election will select a new mayor and three Paul Sorensen members of the Board of Trustees. They will also decide on Ballot Question 1, which would remove the

DACONO MAYOR, JOE BAKER

z Given the choice, most Colorado cities wouldn’t choose to eliminate future housing stock by 16 percent. You’d be hard-pressed to find a growing community willing to cast aside a viable economic development plan and instead, make way for a massive oil and Joe Baker gas operation that will generate millions of dollars for a private company. We in Dacono certainly wouldn’t choose such a path, but its nonetheless where we find ourselves. Several months ago, a routine review of new land purchases by city staff discovered Anadarko Petroleum Company’s new plan for oil and gas development. It involves 500 acres of centrally located residential and commercial land in our city of just over 5,000 residents. The tracts were purchased by several limited liability companies under ambiguous trade names. After a closer look, we determined these

MEAD MAYOR, GARY SHIELDS

z As I write this article, I am reminded that this will be my final communication with you prior Gary Shields to your receiving the mail in ballots for the upcoming election. With this in mind, I would like to bring a few items of relevance to your attention. z First and foremost, if you have not officially seen or heard it yet, it is my pleasure to announce to you that I AM SEEKING RE-

Town of Firestone from restrictions in Colorado Senate Bill 05-152 (SB-152) if it is passed. z SB-152 requires that a local government hold an election before it may engage, or offer to engage, in providing broadband services. If approved, Ballot Question 1 would permit Firestone to explore options to serve the broadband needs of residents, including the pursuit of business partnerships with private companies. The Town currently has no plans to create a public broadband utility. z There are two candidates running for the position of mayor. They are George Heath, a current member of the Board of Trustees, and Bobbi Sindelar, who currently serves as the mayor protem. The new mayor will serve a two-year term. z Six candidates are seeking to fill three positions on the Board of Trustees. They include Emily Brunn, Don Conyac, John H. Damsma, Frank A. Jimenez, Samantha Meiring, and William

Schaefer. Damsma and Meiring are current members of the Board of Trustees. The three candidates elected to the Board will serve fouryear terms. z Voters will cast their ballots by mail or by dropping them off at Town Hall, 151 Grant Ave., in Firestone, between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. on April 3. A drop-box will be available, but there will not be a voting center. Registered voters will receive their ballots by mail with detailed instructions and mail-in deadlines. z More information about the election, the candidates and Ballot Question 1 is available on the Town of Firestone website at www.firestoneco.gov. z As always, if you have suggestions or questions about our Firestone community, please email me at psorensen@ firestoneco.gov.

entities were owned by Anadarko, which has its sights set on the underground petroleum riches of the Denver-Julesburg Basin. Our city finds itself in an interesting situation in terms of growth. By most accounts, the northern I-25 corridor has come of age. For sprawling metro Denver, Dacono is an attractive community with easy access and room to grow. At the same time, pump jacks, tank complexes, and gas wellheads have long been a fixture in the Dacono landscape. Having these oil and gas operations as longtime neighbors is one thing. Having new operations supplant future neighborhoods is another. Anadarko’s plans dramatically change Dacono’s economic development vision, one that welcomed families, neighborhoods and the small businesses that support them. z Last fall, we asked to sit down with Anadarko to get an accurate picture of its plans and discuss a path forward. State law doesn’t give us a lot of clout, or options, in trying to lessen the impacts of oil and gas production. We’re not in favor of an approach taken by some Colorado communities that involves costly, and to varying degrees unsuccessful, litigation. Rather, our goal is establishing an Operating Agreement. This practical approach helps us mitigate many of the negative adverse impacts associated with large scale oil and gas development near homes, including but not limited to control heavy truck traffic on our roads – primarily used for residential access, limit noise and odor impacts,

and prompt better aesthetics around well sites while allowing the company to run its business. An Operator Agreement also allows Anadarko to ensure to the City that its operations will be completed using the gold standard of best management practices. Dacono will receive tax income from the Anadarko production, although positive revenue won’t really begin to come in until 2021 and falls steadily after about eight years of production. To ensure fairness for our residents, we’re also discussing impact fees that will enable us to continue to improve parks, build trail systems and add community features. z The way we see it, an Operator Agreement is a “new model” for co-existing with oil and gas development in Colorado. We’re told Anadarko shares this view, and it’s our sincere hope that it follows through. While we have little choice but to adapt to a different vision for community growth, Dacono’s commitment to developing an inviting, safe and accessible community remains unchanged. z General information on oil and gas activities, as well as updates on the APC operations and the operator agreement will be posted on our website at www.CityofDacono.com. If you have any questions about new oil and gas development, our door is always open. You can also email questions or comments to oilandgas@ cityofdacono.com.

ELECTION for a second term as your Mayor. I want to thank you all for the tremendous amount of support that you have shown to me over the last four years as well as the support and interest that you have already shown to me in pursuit of a second term. I assure you, there are many more successes ahead of us as we “Continue the Plan” over the next four years. z I believe that your vote in a municipal election is the most impactful vote that you will ever cast because it will directly impact your everyday life as well as your lifestyle for the entire time you will live in the community. For that reason, I urge you to take the time to visit the Colorado Secretary of State website and verify that your voter registration is current. If you require any assistance in how to register to vote, updating your registration or in receiving a mail in ballot, please contact the Town Hall and ask to speak to our Town Clerk. z I have been asked many times and have seen on several social media platforms, questions about the future of our town. I

talked about the Comprehensive Plan in last months article and want to remind you of how important this document is in shaping our future growth and direction. z The Comprehensive Plan is currently being reviewed and updated with anticipate approval at the end of March. On March 8th, there will be an opportunity for community input. I urge you all to take the time to visit the Town’s website and review the proposed plan and its approval process ahead of attending the public input meeting. If you require any assistance in this matter, please contact the Town Hall and ask to speak to our Town Planner. z In closing, I want to say that it has been a pleasure serving you and representing you over the past four years. As always, if you should have any questions or need my assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to me. z Sincerely, Gary Shields, Mayor, Town of Mead, 970-535-4477

Body + Soul Wellbeing

Vol. 19, Issue 3

Totally

Food for the Soul-Why is God Opposed to the Proud?

S

cripture tells us that God is “opposed to the proud” in James 4:6. Have you ever wondered why that is true? Let’s explore and find out what the root problem is with pride. First off, know that there are two kinds of pride- one that I believe is OK with God and one that is definitely out of bounds. Appropriate pride is fairly defined by Googling ‘what is pride’, and you will find this definition: “A feeling or deep pleasure or satisfaction derived from one’s own achievements, the achievements of those with whom one is closely associated, or from qualities or possessions that are widely admired.”

When we resolve a problem, be it math or quarreling kiddos, we should naturally feel good about it. If you climb Long’s Peak and make it to the summit, you should feel satisfied (and tired). When your child starts to walk, you feel a sense of pride. If others enjoy your singing voice you are blessed. When people smile at my riding companion- Rico the rhino- in my 1953 Ford F100 pickup, it makes me happy. I do not think God is upset with any of these responses in our lives to this point. Dare I say that in Genesis 1 when the Lord saw what He had made and said that it was good, He wasn’t bragging, but He was

happy with His finished work. That type of pride is not a problem. If you go to Dictionary.com and ask the definition of ‘pride’ you will read the following: “Pride is a high or inordinate opinion of one’s own dignity, importance, merit, or superiority. Whether as cherished in the mind or as displayed in bearing, conduct, etc. It is a dignified sense of what is due to oneself or one’s position or character.”

Here is where the problem starts. When I am puffed up with myself, my status, my accomplishments, or the supposition that I am a legend in my own mind, I am wrongfully proud. When I decide that others should be bowing down to me and kissing my ring because I feel I am a really important dude, I am wrongfully proud. When I conclude that people owe me honor and respect, and if they want my autograph they’re gonna have to pay, I am wrongfully proud. I am taking credit where credit is not due, and that attitude offends God and most others. Another place in Scripture that God

John Calvin said if we would live by faith “we should abandon what doesn’t work and fix our minds on God. The man of God flees to God because only He is the Giver of life.” If we would have the favor of God then we must operate our lives the way He tells us to, trusting Him to guide us and provide for us. God opposes those who are stuck on themselves and blesses those who are stuck on Him. Believers in Jesus are told to “put on Christ”, and that entails wearing compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience daily. As we do these things, we will never have a wardrobe malfunction!

speaks about pride- in the Old Testament book of Habakkuk 2:4 we read “Behold, as for the proud one, his soul is not right within him; but the righteous will live by his faith.” (NASB version) The NIV says “See, he is puffed up”. It doesn’t matter if this person is a Christian or not, when he gets an inflated perception of himself, he becomes proud and puffed up and is offensive to God. In The Message (the Bible in contemporary language) we read “Look at that man bloated by self-importance- full of himself but soul-empty. But the person in right standing before God through loyal and steady believing is fully alive, really alive.” God amplifies this truth in Psalms 101:5 when He says “No one who has a haughty look and an arrogant heart will I endure.” God stands against proud people when it goes beyond personal satisfaction with doing things right to haughtiness with their accomplishments. We endanger ourselves anytime we reject what God says in favor of what we think. Read in Daniel 5 about what befell King Belshazzar, or in Proverbs 6 about the seven things God hates.

Fitness, Rehab, Disease Complexities: Find Support at Fitness Is Medicine

A

rnold Schwarzenegger, NOT! So, when exercise is a necessity for someone opposite Arnie, in strength, mobility and overall health, Abby Wynja is the person you want encouraging you toward your fitness goals. Abby specializes in individual exercise prescriptions. Her gym, Fitness Is Medicine is in the Vista Commercial Center at 1566 Vista View Dr., Unit E, just off Hwy. 119 between Firestone and Longmont. Read what David says. “I’ve been rehabbing with Abby at Fitness is Medicine after completing physical therapy for a triple Laminectomy in my lower back. Abby designed a specific program for me that will change as I change. I live in Florida during the winter and Abby has designed a program that works with our local gym. To date I have lost almost 15 pounds and am back to playing golf and doing all the things I used to do. Abby is the best!” Wow, that’s personal service. “I meet with each and every client before they begin exercise to discuss goals, medical history, etc. Classes are small, and everyone is on their OWN exercise program that I manage closely,” says Abby. With over 15 years’ experience working with individuals of all ages and medical complexities, Abby created a non-intimidating workout environment and approachable exercise programs for real people. Parkinson’s, MS, Type II Diabetes,

high blood pressure, pre and post joint replacement? No problem. Abby works with you individually. Her passion is that you will enjoy your life as physically fit as you possibly can and, in a way, that you desire. “Whatever your current physical activity level is, I can help you add movement to your day and help you get on track to a healthier lifestyle,” says Abby. Linda has Parkinson’s and needed a full knee replacement. She worried about the rehabilitation process and how it would impact her Parkinson’s since her current exercise program was keeping the Parkinson’s controlled. Linda committed to getting stronger before the surgery and with Abby’s program, she met and exceeded her physical therapy goals. Abby understands that exercise is rarely easy and hears stories from those who were put into programs that, frankly, weren’t suitable for the client’s physical needs. She says, “Whether you are in rehab or suffer from a disease or just want to climb the stairs without getting out of breath, come talk to me.” Talking to her is free for your initial evaluation and testing. Tell her you read this article and you get the $75 assessment at no charge, during her promotion period. She will create a realistic program designed uniquely for you. Chinese Medicine and Acupuncture Dry Needling

I

wasn’t overly concerned about other health care providers performing what they’ve termed “dry needling” until a few new clients came to the office with stories of having tried “dry needling” and had unpleasant experiences. Newly concerned, I started fact checking. First, I looked up the term dry needling as defined by a course description found on the web: Dry Needling is a general term for a therapeutic treatment procedure that involves multiple advances of a filament needle into the muscle in the area of the body which produces pain and typically contains a ‘Trigger Point’. This definition describes areas that have been referred to for thousands of years in China, the term historically used is “ashi”. Ashi points, the western term being “trigger points” have long been combined with the use of acupuncture points when appropriate. This purpose of this article to provide absolute clarity that acupuncturists practice Chinese medicine and acupuncture, and have extensive education and supervision regarding the use of acupuncture needles, and this should not be confused with the term “dry needling”. I’d like to begin with a policy adopted by the American Medical Association, copied directly from their site: Regulating Dry Needling The AMA adopted a policy that said physical therapists and other nonphysicians practicing dry needling should – at a minimum – have standards that are similar to the ones for training, certification and continuing education that exist for acupuncture. “Lax regulation and nonexistent standards surround this invasive practice. For patients’ safety, practitioners should meet standards required for licensed acupuncturists and physicians,” AMA Board Member Russell W. H. Kridel, M.D. https://www.ama-assn. org/ama-adopts-new-policies-final-dayannual-meeting I then looked up the education requirements to become a licensed acupuncturist. The minimum length of time for an acupuncture program is 1,490 hours, 660 of those hours must be supervised clinical hours. The graduate

program I attended at Southwest Acupuncture College from 1998 though 2001 was 2,600 hours, including 6 semesters supervised in the student clinic (the first year of clinic students may only observe) and numerous supervised practical and technique classroom hours. It is also required that students pass the Clean Needle Technique course prior to handling and inserting an acupuncture needle into a person. This class includes all aspects of safe needle use as determined by OSHA laws and regulations (Occupational Safety and Health Administration). OSHA employees randomly visit the student clinic. The introductory class for “dry needling” is 27 hours, including lecture material. I then visited several more websites to be absolutely certain that I’d correctly read course descriptions. After taking one 27 hour introductory Dry Needling class, health practitioners are allowed to insert needles up to 5 inches into a person’s body, “the course allows participants immediate integration of dry needling into clinical practice” - quote from course offered in Denver, CO. Patients of dry needling have reported both major and minor injuries. Hospitalizations include pneumothorax (puncturing of the lung) and spinal cord injuries. Please choose wisely and safely when seeking all health care modalities. Ask about education, experience and regulations. Check your own level of comfort and be sure that all of your questions have been answered.

Where Are You At With Your Fitness Goals This Year?

N

ow that we’re nine weeks into the new year, here are some lessons learned from my clients and community that will hopefully help you along the way. Those who get the best results with my programs generally do the following: zz Show Up Consistently - They prioritize it just like an important doctor’s appointment or meeting at work, and it becomes part of their healthy lifestyle. zz Implement A Healthy Nutrition Plan - Nutrition is key, and those who take it seriously are the ones who improve their health, have more energy, lose more weight, and feel better. They take time to plan and prepare meals/ snacks, and ask questions when they’re not sure on something. zz Resilience - We’re all going to get sick, injured, or have a death in the family at some point. How much that derails a person’s plans depends on several of the things mentioned here, along with a person’s resilience to not give up. There will be times in people’s lives when instances call for your focus and energy to be put in other areas, but hopefully these seasons of life won’t last very long. zz Work Hard In Sessions - Each workout doesn’t have to be all out, but challenging their body makes for quicker and better results. zz Accountability - Those who find a friend or spouse to commit to better health with, will keep them more accountable and on track with goals. Some may need a personal trainer, like myself, to help them with their fitness goals. No one will be perfect, it’s about progress. zz Make New Friends/Keep Others At Bay - Surround yourself with people who are actively pursuing a healthy lifestyle

as well. They may need to keep others at a distance if they know they’ll try and lure them back to bad habits. zz Set Challenging Goals - Do a running or bike race, hike a certain trail, sign up for a competition, the list goes on. For others, their goals may be to walk their dog every day, always take the stairs, or park farther out in parking lots. zz Have Fun - If they’re miserable working out, chances are it’s going to be tough to stick with it for the long haul. When they’re smiling, laughing, and connecting with others, it makes it more fun to enjoy the activity or workout....like my ladies only fitness classes. Some ladies have been coming for years, because they enjoy the camaraderie and get to know the other ladies in the group. I hope this list helps you in your decision making process. If your first eight weeks of 2018 haven’t gone the way you had hoped with workouts and healthy nutrition, then it might be time to work with me (either mobile personal training where I come to your home or attending my fitness classes). As a mother of two children, 15 & 18, I feel so very blessed that they both have grown up happy, healthy, strong & affectionate. As I look around my world, I see other mothers, some my very close friends, with challenges they never dreamed of. Having begun the parenting journey with the same hopes & dreams for their children as I, they now struggle with the fact that one day, almost overnight in some cases, their children are different. Their behaviors shifted from socially communicative to exhibiting delayed speech, awkward mannerisms and lack of interest in others and no eye contact even with their own mother. These parents must not only deal with the issues around raising a child they don’t always understand, they must also be an advocate for their child & deal with the prejudices & ignorance of others. A general lack of understanding of this complex disorder causes some people to discriminate and often unintentionally be hurtful with their words & reactions. A parent asks oneself, “Did I do something wrong?” “Was it medication, vaccines, diet?” “Is it hereditary?” All valid questions with so far, no real answers.

This condition requires more research to determine the causes of autism & hopefully a way to prevent it all together. That is why we choose to champion behind the cause of Autism Research. We intend to raise money to help the children & parents of autism, and search for a cure to the condition. Please help us with this worthy cause. Since 2013 we have raised $77,000 and with your help, we hope to break the $100K goal. The funds we raise will go to the Autism Treatment Network through Children’s Hospital Colorado Foundation. You can join our team & raise funds or contribute at http://teamchildrenscolorado.kintera. org/cvhmforautism We invite you to join us on May 19th to run with us, we have something for everyone with a half marathon, 5K & 1-mile Fun Run. Comedian Michael Jr. to Land at LifeBridge on April 6 Comedian Michael Jr. is bringing his The More Than Funny Tour to LifeBridge Church, 10345 Ute Highway in Longmont, on Friday, April 6 at 7 p.m. This night of fun, laughter and encouragement for the entire family is not one to miss. Hailed as one of today’s most gifted comedians, Michael Jr. got his start when George Wallace took him to the legendary Comedy & Magic Club in Hermosa Beach. Even though the club is the home of Jay Leno and “The Tonight Show” staff, the club’s owner slipped Michael Jr. onstage to perform. A week later, he was performing for the “Just for Laughs” comedy festival where he became the first comedian to ever appear live via satellite on “The Tonight Show.” Tickets for this not-to-miss event are available at lbcc.org/michaeljr or in the LifeBridge bookstore.

or years the Town of Mead has hosted the summer recreation program creating a successful solution for beating the summer blues for children and parents. Due to the program’s high demand and the limited amount of space at Town Hall, Mead Community School will be hosting the summer recreation program beginning in the summer of 2018. “We have heard and understand how valuable this program is to our residents both in Mead and the surrounding areas,” said Janet Torres, Town of Mead’s Recreation Coordinator. “We are grateful to have such strong relationships with our school system to be able to continue advancing this program and serving the children of Mead.” The theme of the program this year will be “Around the World in 46 Days.” Children will travel the globe on worldly themed weekly field trips, restaurants, swimming, science experiments, art projects, guest visitors, park days, splash time, cooking and so much more! Community School Site Program Manager, Carely Palomo states, ““Mead Community School is very excited to have the opportunity to offer a summer camp at Mead Elementary. Tutor Doctor is Proving FLU PREVENTION Buckets to Northern Colorado Area Schools

I

n an effort to give back to school teachers in local communities, Tutor Doctor Northern Colorado is providing FLU PREVENTION Buckets to help teachers reduce the spread of the flu and other illnesses in their classrooms. Inspired by the news of many people across the country getting sick and even dying, the local owner of Tutor Doctor Northern Colorado- Susan and Jay Stype), decided to help teachers by providing them with buckets full of cleaning products for their classroom. Teachers were asked to comment on a Facebook post with their name and school to receive a bucket. The first 30 teachers to do this will receive a bucket. The first batch of 15 buckets will be delivered on Friday, February 9th. The remaining buckets will be delivered following Friday- February 16th. The buckets contain items such as antibacterial cleaning spray, hand sanitizer, antibacterial wet wipes, and more. This gesture was designed to help the teachers who usually are spending their own money to keep their classrooms running smoothly. Susan Stype, a former paramedic herself and mother of two students, knows how quickly sicknesses can spread in classrooms and soon the teacher or many students are missing school.

“All teachers are very much deserving of any help they can get, and this is one small way that we can give back to them for all the hard work they put into educating the children in our community,” said Susan Stype of Tutor Doctor. “Teachers are a crop of talented, irreplaceable people who often get overlooked and we are more than happy to give them whatever we can.” About Tutor Doctor Tutor Doctor was founded in 2000 as an alternative to the “one-to-many” teaching model most extra-curricular learning centers offer by providing a personalized one-on-one, in-home tutoring service to students. The company quickly grew and in 2003 turned to franchising as a way of expanding the company’s impact and meeting the vast market demand. Now with offices internationally in Canada, the United States, Latin America, the United Kingdom, Australia and Africa, the Tutor Doctor vision is becoming a reality as the lives of students and their families are being positively impacted throughout the world. With over 500 franchised territories worldwide, Tutor Doctor was listed by Entrepreneur Magazine as one of the fastest growing franchise brands. For more information about Tutor Doctor visit the web site at www. tutordoctor.com.

he short answer is “yes”. There are a few very important reasons why this is the case: The annual trend for the sale of homes shows higher activity between the months of March and July. This corresponds with families moving between school years, and also warmer weather for an easier move. Fewer people are looking outside of these months and the trend for days on the market (DOM) is typically higher during the off months. Another important item to consider is the current inventory of homes on the market – your competition. Coming off the winter season, there tends to be lower inventory of homes on the market. This is especially true in 2018 as overall inventory levels continue to be low. Due to the low inventory level, competition between buyers is high - leading to faster selling times. Lastly, and certainly one of the most important considerations, selling prices continue to be at all-time highs. This will help you better achieve your financial goals with the sale of your home. Increased competition due to few options for buyers

has driven prices upward. This is a trend the experts are predicting to continue throughout the spring season. If you are considering selling your home, it is important you speak with an experienced REALTOR ® to review comparable market data and determine your home’s selling price range. An experienced agent will also be able to estimate your net proceeds at different sales prices, along with provide you a detailed proven marketing plan for selling your home. Nicole Bolieau Joins RE/MAX Nexus

E

nthusiasm for helping others buy and sell homes exudes from Nicole Bolieau, newest Realtor to join RE/MAX Nexus in Firestone. Nicole, a native Coloradoan from Loveland, which she calls home to this day, has “always wanted clients to realize the true potential a home has to offer.” Her love of real estate began in her early teens when she would drive around in search of Open Houses, just to gain inspiration and design ideas. Bolieau purchased her first fixer upper when she was just 21. Over the course of the next three years, she put all her design ideas and inspiration to good use when she realized the fixer upper’s potential as an investment. With some encouragement from other real estate professionals, as well as friends and family, she began pursuing her dreams of a real estate career. Bolieau states, “I aim to please and find great joy helping clients find their dream home.” When not selling real estate, Bolieau spends her free time with her husband and two young sons. They enjoy camping, dirt biking, 4 wheeling and doing anything involving beautiful Colorado. Bolieau can be reached at RE/ MAX Nexus 970.295.4760 or her cell 970.646.3755.

a matte (flat) finish gives colors a deeper, darker appearance. Your first thought may be to paint a bright white or pastel, but that’s not necessarily what’s needed in low light areas. For the best qualities of a paint color to show, the undertones must be visible. The lighter the room, the more the undertones will show. So if you’re painting a low light room in a light color and the room isn’t well lit, the undertones won’t show as much and the walls and ceilings will have more shadows and can appear gray and dim. Good colors to use will probably be in the light to mid-tones, with light reflective values in the middle to high range. There are ton of colors from which to choose. Start by looking at blue, light green, offwhite and gray neutrals. As always, sample the colors on the walls and live with them a day or two before you make your final selection.

lthough we reside in sunny Colorado, we still have rooms in our homes where the lighting isn’t the best. Light dims as the day progresses and artificial lighting also affects the look. Most often north and northeast facing rooms appear to be the darkest, particularly during the winter months. Powder rooms and other rooms that are windowless or have very small windows often need a light boost as well. These spaces with less natural light can be brightened using the right paint. Paint reflects light and all paint has a LRV, or Light Reflectance Value. Usually printed on the back of a paint color strip, the LRV has a range of 1 to 99 with 99 being the lightest. The sheen of your paint will also play a part in the LRV as well, with gloss and high gloss reflecting the most light, while

Unified Basketball Games

I

n February Frederick High School hosted three Unified basketball games. Unified Sports® is an inclusive sports program that combines Special Olympics athletes and partners on teams for training and competition. The FHS Unified team hosted Erie on February 6th, Skyline on February 9th and Silver Creek on February 13th. The Feb 6th the Unified Season started with a parade from the Academic wing to the Gym. The Warrior band led the way, followed by the Cheerleaders and the Unified team all to the cheers and applause of the FHS students lining the Hallways! The game was a wonderful experience for all. The FHS Student section cheered for both teams and could be heard chanting “Let’s go Warriors” and “Let’s go Tigers”! Both Unified teams and their partners had a great time. FHS Boys Basketball player Nick Formby and Girls Varsity Basketball Player Aspen Dufour officiated the game. Members of Best Buddies - led by Megan Hartley assisted with the Frederick team. For the Skyline and Silver Creek games the FHS Booster Club hosted a Pack the Stands event giving out free hotdogs and waters to all attendees. After the Skyline game all Unified athletes and their families were treated to a Pizza Party hosted by FHS Booster Club. A special thanks to Black Jack Pizza for donating! Frederick Baseball will be hosting a Unified Baseball game this spring. Please go to the Frederick High School Booster Club Facebook page or www.fhsbooster.com for more information.

Hotline To Help Curb Foreclosures

E

ven though the number of foreclosed homes is fairly low right now, some people still face the problem of getting behind in their mortgage payments. With the market being strong the last few years and prices rising, you may have enough equity to sell the house and make up the back payments and get out whatever equity you have. If you don’t have equity, or want to try to stay in the home, a free hotline provides an easy way for those who may be in danger of foreclosure to talk directly with a trained, professional housing counselor. Counselors can offer free assistance in helping homeowners navigate the foreclosure process and can act as a facilitator between homeowners and their mortgage lenders. The Foreclosure Prevention Hotline is 1-877-601-HOPE (4673). The Foreclosure Hotline is the first of its kind in the United States. It is the first statewide Hotline - tailored specifically to the legal realities of Colorado - and it is the first to connect borrowers with local counselors in communities throughout the state. The Hotline is the product of a consortium of private-sector and government organizations, including the Colorado Association of Realtors, that have come together to address the high foreclosure rate in Colorado. The Colorado Foreclosure Hotline connects borrowers with non-profit housing counselors who can provide information on a borrower’s options when facing foreclosure. Counselors can also act as facilitators for communication between lenders and borrowers. All assistance is provided to homeowners free of charge. We encourage any borrowers (homeowners) in the following situations to call the hotline: 1) Borrowers who have not yet missed a mortgage payment but are concerned they may miss future payments. 2) Borrowers who are already behind on the payments. 3) Borrowers who have received a notice of foreclosure. 4) Borrowers having trouble communicating with their mortgage lenders. The hotline, 1-877-601-HOPE (4673), is expected to help at least an estimated 40,000 homeowners in some stage of foreclosure in Colorado by providing about 60 counselors from about 30 different agencies across the country. There are often more options available than you may think there are, when you are having difficulty with your mortgage payments. Take advantage of this resource to help you get the best information possible.

arbon Valley Rotary is excited to again partner with the Carbon Valley Park and Rec District for our 11th Annual Easter Egg Hunt to be held Saturday, March 31, from 1 to 2:30 pm at Hart Park in Firestone, CO. The event is FREE to attend, and there will be four “hunt” areas divided by age and height for the 10,000 candy stuffed eggs. Only 10 to 12 children will be allowed in each area at a time – and the Easter Egg Hunt will last the entire 1 1/2 hour period. One thousand FREE BOOKS will be given out thanks to our sponsor Ehrlich I-25 Kia. There will be activities for the children, including the Fire Safety House, Home Depot with their Kids Craft Corner, Shelter Box, and many more attractions. We invite non-profit organizations to set up a Free Booth to let the community know about your services. We would also like anyone who would like to volunteer their time, or donate money, new books, or wrapped candy that will fit in a small plastic Easter Egg, to please contact us. This is also a good opportunity for students to receive volunteer credit for their school. In the event of inclement weather, or where the ground is water saturated or snow covered, the Easter Egg Hunt will be moved to the Carbon Valley Rec Center at 701 5th Street in Frederick from 1:00 to 2:30 pm the day of the event. The Easter Egg Hunt will not be rescheduled. For more information email BevMendel@carbonvalleyrotary.org or call 303-596-7731. Rotary is where neighbors, friends, and problem-solvers share ideas, join leaders, and take action to create lasting change around the world. The Carbon Valley Rotary Club is a dynamic group of leaders making a positive difference in our area through community involvement with a focus on youth. Guests are welcome to join us the 1st and 3rd Tuesday mornings from 7:00 to 8:00 am at Bella Rosa Golf Course, or the 2nd and 4th Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 8:00 pm at Prairie Greens Clubhouse.

St. Brigit To Celebrate Vernal Equinox

S

t. Brigit Episcopal Church once again will celebrate the return of Spring with a Vernal Equinox Service on Tuesday, March 20, at 7:00p.m. The theme of this unique, contemplative service will be birth and rebirth. The Vernal Equinox celebration is a part of St. Brigit’s A’it Caol series. A’it Caol (pronounced atch qweel) is Gaelic for “A Thin Place.” These quarterly services are created to offer guests an experience of God through a unique liturgy, which combines ancient tradition with contemporary language. They include specially designed meditation areas, reflecting the Scriptural lessons, and sacred music with a Celtic sound. Ancient people marked this day with thanksgiving for the return of light and warmth. Spring promised rebirth and hope. In the Christian church, the Vernal Equinox is significant in that it is used in determining the date of Easter, the first Sunday following the first full moon after the Equinox. Older children are welcome at the Vernal Equinox Service. Childcare will be provided for children under age six. Guests are invited to come early to walk St. Brigit’s outdoor labyrinth, weather permitting. St. Brigit Episcopal Church is located at 110 Johnson Street in Frederick. Visit www.stbrigit.org or www.facebook.com/ StBrigit for more information.
