He was twenty-three. The next year, my uncle’s little boy, Ryan was hit by a truck and died. All my grandparents have died and all my aunts and uncles on my mom’s side have died. And there are many other family members and now friends, too.

Not having turned sixty, yet…that’s a lot of people who have gone before me.

Because so many of my loved ones have died, I have an investment in the afterlife. I want and need to believe that Heaven is real. I want and need to know that I will see my children again.

A month after Jason died I was at a writers conference in Estes Park. I was an emotional wreck although I continued to suck it up and pretend otherwise. But one evening after some prayer time and then singing songs about Jesus, I was overcome with peace. I felt so calm. And that is when I saw Jesus: holding Jason’s hand on one side and Alisha’s hand on the other side. It gave me tremendous peace of mind and heart.

Tips for First-Time River Cruisers

C

onsidering your first river cruise? The cost of a river cruise is comparable to some guided land tour packages and provides great value for all the inclusions that are not provided on an ocean cruise or independent tour. There are three, four and five-star river cruise lines and aligning your budget with your expectations and your experienced professional travel agent will help to determine which cruise line and which category stateroom will provide you with the best value and river cruise experience.

Interest in river cruising has grown quickly! Unlike the large ocean cruise ships, river cruise vessels only carry up to 190 guests and offer a more intimate cruise experience. The most desired river cruise staterooms, French balcony, balcony and suites, sell out a year in advance.

Generally, the river cruise lines offer their best promotions as soon as the itineraries become available for booking.

If your dates of travel are not flexible or if your heart is set on a specific itinerary, river cruise line and category of stateroom, make your deposit early to avoid disappointment. Also be aware that most river cruise lines’ deposits are fully or partially non-refundable, so it’s important to be confident in your choice of cruise and also, purchase trip insurance.

River cruising is all about destinations and should be your first consideration when planning your first river cruise. The river cruise line

and ship you ultimately sail will depend upon the particular itinerary you choose, especially if an itinerary is exclusive to one particular river cruise company. In general, the river cruise lines have similar itineraries, but one may offer more in-depth exploration of a city, optional excursions or included pre- and/or post cruise options.

On a Danube River cruise, for example, a must-see city and highlight is Budapest.

Some Danube itineraries do not include Budapest and would require a pre- or postcruise extension to enjoy the marvels of this beautiful city. A growing trend in river cruising is specialty and themed cruises, with a focus on music, history, gourmet cooking, wine making, beer brewing or a craft. These cruises are an ideal choice for groups who share an affinity for classical music, fine wines, Belgian beers, shopping the Christmas Markets, exploring the gardens of Asia, and even knitting or golf.

Most shore excursions are included in the price of your river cruise. River cruise lines profess to be “all-inclusive� in their pricing, but their inclusiveness is not the same across the board. Included features of most river cruises are: cabin choice, most land excursions, all on-board meals, coffee, tea and soft drinks, beer and wine with lunch and/or dinner.

The price of these inclusions is reflected in the total cost of your cruise, but in any case it represents great value and a sense of ease, knowing when you embark that virtually all costs are taken care of.

n 2017, the voters approved a 0.6% sales tax to fund the construction of the Police Department & Municipal Court Building. The project was greatly supported by you – the residents. The building was completed on time and on budget, and opened its doors to the public in October of 2019. Here we are today and the debt is being paid and there is a surplus. Ballot Question 2A is asking if the Town can use that surplus for maintenance of the new Police Department & Municipal Court Building, and to allow for it to be used for construction, operation and maintenance of other Town facilities.

To me, it is important to identify a clear funding source to maintain the beautiful new building that we built. While, also important to address facility needs for Town Hall and Public Works. Both facilities have been outgrown. We need to improve operational efficiencies, address building code compliance issues and set-up the Town to serve the community for the long term. A ‘yes’ vote on 2A, will allow the Town to accomplish all of this.

The bottom line is we have identified a way to maintain your investment in the new Police Department & Municipal Court Building and a way to address facility needs that the Town has – and do so without raising any taxes and without extending the debt.

any people have looked to the real estate market as a place to diversify their investment portfolio. The idea of having someone else make the payments on your property so that you gain equity is very appealing.

One of the ways to become a landlord, is to buy a new home for yourself and keep your existing home as a rental property. As with any method, you must analyze what best meets your specific needs. In the current market, we are starting to see a little more inventory in the move-up price ranges due to more new construction, so in those price ranges you are not in a bidding war for a property.

The first consideration is whether or not your current home would make a good rental. If the property is in the lower to middle price range in an area, it may be a good rental. Conversely, a higher priced custom home will not bring in the same proportion of rent to value as the lower valued house.

Advantages to this method of acquiring property can include an easier move, better financing, knowledge of the physical condition of the rental property and a way to move up in house and build long term wealth. Since you would be purchasing a new home to live in, the timing and moving is under your control and since you are already very familiar with the home, you know potential physical problems that you would have to deal with.

Financing can be an advantage because it can be more cost effective to use the equity in your current property, which can be taken out at a lower interest rate. Instead of needing to save up a large cash down payment, the current home can be refinanced at today's low interest rates. Then, when you purchase the new home (with the down payment from the old one) you get another attractive loan as an owner-occupant.

Another important consideration is the management of the property. Decide carefully between finding a tenant yourself and hiring a professional to manage the property for you. You may save some money up front, but if you are not careful, doing it yourself can cost more in the long run. Your retirement account can also own real estate, not just stocks or mutual funds, so for some people, this can be a good way to diversify a portfolio. There are specific rules pertaining to this and not all account managers are set up for it, but it may be worth consideration.

Your Realtor can be of great help in starting you on the right path by looking at your specific needs and desires, as well as educating you on what you don’t know. Owning real estate has been one of the great ways of building long term wealth that our country offers.

Re-Elect Salvatore “Sam” DeSantis Frederick Trustee

I

am a lifelong resident of Frederick. I also owned a business downtown for 20 years from 1984 to 2004. I attended elementary school in Frederick and graduated from Longmont High School in 1972. I majored in business administration at Western Colorado University, and graduated in 1976.

I’m married to my wife, Cindy, and have two children, Sarah and Christopher. I enjoy golfing, fishing, and collecting vinyl record albums. I previously served as a trustee on the Frederick Town Board from 1986 to 1990, and was responsible for getting the Frederick recreation area started in 1987, 1. I am running for reelection to continue to help Frederick move toward the future. A lot of issues come up when we go through the growth we’re experiencing, and I feel I can help Frederick in all areas that need a common sense approach.

2. My top three priorities are unnecessary spending, metro districts, growth, and streets.

1. I’ve seen a few things that could’ve saved the town money. We need to govern within our means. I am a conservative when it comes to unnecessary spending.

2. I am opposed to metro districts because they impose higher property taxes on home buyers. I feel developers should be responsible for paying more. Given the rate at which Frederick is growing, I’m in favor of a smart growth plan.

3. Frederick’s population has outgrown the roads. Traffic has to be looked at today for roads that were adequate 20 years ago.

4. I had a business in downtown Frederick for 20 years, I know the struggles that small business owners face. Perhaps Miners Day festivities should be held downtown again to help promote local businesses. Frederick needs more parking in that area. We need to promote local businesses and industries located outside the downtown area as well. I live in old town Frederick, and my favorite things are the small-town atmosphere, quiet neighborhoods, and the community events offered here.

I

am running for Mayor because I am invested in the Town’s future and well-being. I want to see Frederick grow and change wisely and in ways that keep the things we love about Frederick alive and well.

My husband and I moved here from the Denver area in 2002. Since 2000 we have owned and run a museum exhibit services company.

We are now partly retired.

I have been involved in the Town for a number of years. I became a member of the Frederick Arts Commission in 2006, and was chair from 2008 until 2016. I was an elected member of the last Home Rule Commission and served as its chair. I was elected to the Board of Trustees initially in 2012 and was re-elected to a second term in 2016. I have been Mayor Pro Tem, stepping in to do whatever is necessary when the Mayor hasn’t been available, since 2014.

The job of the Mayor is to see that the business of the Town gets done and to help the Board be prepared to do its work. It is the work of the Board to represent the residents of Frederick and work together to make decisions that promote and further the best interests of the community.

I’d like to be the one to help the next Board do that work.

The Town’s voters have twice given me the opportunity and I’ve worked hard for the last eight years coming to understand the roles and responsibilities of the Board. It’s important to me to offer that accumulated knowledge and experience back to the community.

While decisions are ultimately made by the Board as a whole, I am interested in working with the Board and staff on medium and long term planning for community growth and development options, including water resource management and diversified housing options.

I am also interested in furthering the work already underway for acquisition and effective management of the Town’s water resources, with an increased focus on conservation efforts to make the most of the water we already have.

I think it is important to continue the pursuit of economic development strategies to attract businesses that provide both primary jobs and products and services relevant to our residents.

In my time on the Board we have made continuous improvements to the community: o we have upgraded and expanded parks, trails and open space and we are about to finally add a skate park to the Frederick Recreation Area o we have improved public safety with

o a new Public Works facility and additional equipment and staff o new funding for the police department to add officers and equipment o we have implemented capital and roadway improvements o downtown alley paving o extending Tipple Parkway to the I-25 frontage road o widening Godding Hollow Parkway o drainage improvements to the downtown area o we have improved access to the downtown o with the Gateway at Highway 52 and Colorado Boulevard o the roundabout at 5th Street o wayfinding and signage program.

Highway 52 is a critical element of our community. I am a member of the DRCOG (Denver Regional Council of Governments) Southwest Weld regional working group and the Highway 52 Coalition (consisting of CDOT, Weld County, Boulder County, Erie, Dacono, Frederick, Fort Lupton, Hudson and Keenesburg.) These two groups have put together funding for a study of the full Highway 52 corridor (a PEL study – Planning and Environmental Linkages.) This study will be the foundation and guide for major changes and improvements that need to be made by CDOT to the highway corridor. This study is just beginning and will be completed over the next 18 months. It is an absolutely critical first step to the improvements we all know need to happen.

Quality of life is often an important factor in choice of location for new businesses and can also be a factor in business retention and attracting new customers and employees. I fully support the actions of the Board to date in these areas and believe it is important to maintain and improve the business-friendly practices we have in place.

I see great strength in the Carbon Valley area, and potential in leveraging our relationships with our surrounding communities for a greater good for all.

I

am writing here to introduce myself! I am a Marine Corps veteran of the Iraq war where I served on active duty for 5 years and was honorably discharged in 2006. During that time, I deployed twice and worked primarily as a linguist in the signals intelligence field. Outside of my time in the Marines I have lived in Colorado my entire life. Born in Grand Junction, grown in Broomfield, and moved to Frederick nearly 6 years ago. I sing Barbershop as member of a competitive, internationally ranked men’s barbershop chorus, Sound of the Rockies, based out of Denver. My quartet was recently featured on both 850KOA’s morning radio show and 9News’ morning show for Valentine’s Day. I am the father of two great kids and husband to a wife that makes this all possible through her support and insight. We own a small business in Frederick that we were lucky enough to expand over the past year in order to serve more of the community and we are excited for it to continue to grow along with our town. I spend most weekdays working as a branch manager at a bank in Thornton. I’ve always felt the call to serve and saw running for Trustee is a great opportunity to really have a positive impact in our community. Elect Rusty ONeal for Frederick Mayor

I

am thankful to the community for supporting my small businesses and allowing me to serve them over the past 11 years. With a majority of my work coming from the Carbon Valley, I drive throughout our community daily and talk to residents and business owners. Reaching out and discussing needs, goals, and concerns of Frederick is the only way you can represent the community effectively.

My wife and two children are happy to have chosen Carbon Valley to be our home for over 20 years. We feel that it is important to give back to the community and that is why I would be honored to serve as Mayor of Frederick. I have a diverse background having been a part of large and small business, public infrastructure, manufacturing, retail, agriculture, and construction. I sat on Frederick’s Planning Commission for two years before serving as Frederick Trustee. Serving on the Planning Commission gave me the opportunity to familiarize myself with the Land Use Code, planning issues, and many aspects of our community’s plan. As Trustee, I have strived to attend many community events and have rarely missed a board meeting. In addition, I have developed a strong working relationship with Frederick’s police department and public works. My past two years on the board have been both challenging and rewarding.

Our board is made up of a diverse group of individuals and I pride myself in being able to mediate between the members’ different ideologies. I am diligent in researching topics that come before the board and make it my duty to openly explain my reasoning not only to the other board members but to the residents that have elected me to represent them.

During my tenure on the board, I feel I have helped Frederick make big strides to grow in the right direction including dissolving Frederick Power and Electric and increasing funding to the police department. Our board has identified that we want to emphasize commercial development over residential development. Frederick has many challenges in the near future such as water, roads (i.e. Colorado Blvd, Ridgeway, Hwy 52, etc.), and other projects too large to address without working with Firestone and Dacono. That being said, protecting Frederick’s interests will be my priority. As your mayor, I will continue to focus my energy on listening to the residents of our community, developing relationships with our neighboring towns, and encouraging staff and other members of the board to do the same. evin Brown has been a teacher for 17 years, K the last 14 of them have been at Frederick High School as the choir teacher. He holds a

Bachelors of Music Education From Ouachita Baptist University, A Masters of Music Education from University of Northern Colorado, and an Education Specialists degree in Administration from University of Colorado, Denver. He has also received the teacher of the year award at FHS twice (2009 and 2012) and the teacher of the year for Frederick from the St. Vrain Education Foundation (2019). He was nominated for Colorado Educator of the Year for the state of Colorado in 2019. He has had many accomplishments in that time including leading students and adults on various trips around the country and world, directing top ranking choirs, and having a show that was selected as best in state in 2018 for the Colorado State Thespian Conference. He has been a member of the Frederick Miners Day committee for the last 5 years and helped with the expansion and growth of the festival to its new and larger location. He has been a resident of Frederick for as many years. Kevin is married to Autumn Brown and their passions include travel, animals, and hosting foreign exchange students every school year. One of the biggest reasons they host these students is to share their love of this amazing country we are blessed to live in.

Why are you running for office ?

My wife and I moved to Frederick because we knew that this was where we wanted to raise our family. I believe that our community is growing at a rapid rate, and I want to continue the work of aking Frederick an amazing place to live, raise a family, and enjoy the rewards of living in a town like Frederick provides.

If elected, what are your top three priorities?

1. To provide infrastructure that allows our communities to grow and provide opportunities for its residents. This includes creating and maintaining parks and open space and the ability to connect with each other in our communities as well as with those around us.

2. I want to make sure that we provide an atmosphere that promotes business. This includes welcoming new businesses, while making sure that established businesses can continue to grow and thrive.

3. To ensure that our community retains the small town feeling that has enticed so many people to move here. In the 14 years I have been a part of this community we have grown by 5,000 people. At least 3,000 of those have been in the last five years and we’re projected to double this number again in the next 10 years. We need to keep our community safe, respect traditions that remind us of the people who created this community, and embrace new traditions that reflect the growth of this town.

Why should business owners support your campaign?

As our community grows we need to be able to provide goods and services for the people living here. I believe the only way this can happen is if we have healthy, thriving businesses. I want to do everything I can to provide support and security for businesses to develop and grow here. I want to make sure that people in this town can find goods and services here and not be forced to leave to find places to eat, to take care of personal needs, or to purchase items that they want and need.

Keeping our money, especially tax monies, local will only help to continue the support that our town needs to maintain the life we live here.

What neighborhood do you live in and what are your favorite things about Frederick?

I live in the Summit View Estates neighborhood in Frederick. I love feeling a connection to people around me that comes from a small town. I enjoy all of the trails and parks that we have for my family to enjoy. I love the pride that the people of Frederick feel in their town and the events we host every year such as Miners Day, Frederick in Flight, and Chuck Wagons and Chainsaws. I want to make sure we can preserve these things that I love even as we continue to grow.

Although I have lived here all my life, that's a very small part of knowing who I am. I'm married and my wife and myself have three grown children. Ok, so much for my personal life.

I was fortunate as a kid in high school to work summers at, what was then, the sugar factory in Longmont Colorado. A gentleman who worked as a Union Representative for the Teamsters at the factory, enrolled me into the International Teamsters Union.

Coming from a family who were union members of various unions at the time, I had learned from them what the unions were about and working as a member of the Teamsters Union became part of my early working career. After working various jobs, I was employed by NationsWay Transport, and once again I joined the Teamsters Union. I was a member of a local branch who was one of the biggest locals in the western region. The President of that Local took me and a few others under his wing and we were the Committee and Commission. For the next fifteen years we would negotiate and write guidelines for contracts for the Western Teamsters Union. This Commission would also underwrite different parts of the International Union Contract Book in which all members work under from coast to coast.

For the last ten years that I was a member of The International Teamster Union, I was a union steward where I worked. I also sat in on local committees for local contracts. After twenty-five years of working under and for the International Teamsters Union, I retired.

I, in the meantime had started a catering company (FigscateringLLC). My Wife and myself would sit down with my Grandmother, (my Dad's mom) and watch her and have her teach us recipes of the Italian food that I grew up with. For most residents you probably know me from the red food trailer that we had, Pauolina's Cucina! We served all the Old-Style Italian food from the recipes that my grandmother had taught us. We, mostly I, operated and ran the Catering Company until I retired the second time. In my two careers, I learned a lot of business sense. The most used of all the things I did and learned was, the two simple words, "Common Sense." They will prevail.

Now I ask you, when you vote, make sure it makes “Common Sense.” Who is the best Candidate for the office in which you will put your mark?

am Debbie Brodhead and I am running for re-election for Trustee for the Town of Mead. I have been a resident of Colorado since 1973 and Mead since 1984. I worked as a Utility Billing and Building Permit Clerk for the Town of Mead 1998-2002. I have worked for the Weld County Sheriff’s Office for 17 1/2 years mostly at the Del Camino SW substation. I was a Director for the Mountain View Fire Rescue. I am the current Regent for the Carbon Valley Chapter of the Daughters of American Revolution, a current Director with Northern Colorado Crime Stoppers and a current Coordinator for the Aspect Foundation Foreign Exchange Student Program.

Elect Sean Doherty for Firestone Trustee Sean Doherty of Firestone has announced his candidacy in the April, 2020 election as Trustee for the Town of Firestone. Sean and his wife, Karen moved to 5 years ago after spending 27 years as residents of Maryland. They are proud parents of 6 children ranging in age from 14-24 years. Sean received a Bachelor of Arts degree in History and Literature from the University of Baltimore and Master of Science, Finance degree from Loyola University.

ello! My name is Steve Fox and I am excited to announce my candidacy for Mead Trustee. My family and I moved to Mead almost 6 years ago after falling in love with the small town feel. My wife is a Special Education Para-Educator at Mead High School and both of our children are proud recent graduates of MHS as well.

I accept the reality that we can’t close the proverbial gate behind us to keep others from moving here. I also understand that growth is inevitable and many would argue that it is critical to justify the creature-comforts of a local grocery store, pharmacy, etc. That being said, I believe that our recent local growth is out-pacing our infrastructure.

I am not claiming to have an immediate solution, nor am I here to make false promises or tell you what I think you want to hear to earn your vote. I believe in the Covey principle “Seek first to understand, then be understood” which is why I am such a regular (and vocal) attendee at our Board of Trustee meetings. I am not seeking election because I aspire for a 2nd career in politics nor do I have any affiliation or alliance with any current board member or candidate. What I do bring to the table is a passion to be part of the solution! I am a US Army veteran and have more than 20 years of experience in varying levels of crossfunctional leadership. I’ve managed multiple business segments of varying sizes from local to global and I understand how important it is to be fiscally responsible.

The West Service Center represents United Powers commitment to community. The new service center on the I25 Frontage Road between 119 and 52 was an opportunity to address the present and future needs of the community and has significantly improved response times in the West District. The facility houses line crews, work vehicles, a warehouse, and storage yard eliminating long trips to and from Brighton. The building has a payment kiosk and community rooms. The location and versatility of our new West District faculty can help support both the Mountain and Plains areas. Short response times, fewer trips, and efficient use of resources benefits all the membership.

The industry is rapidly changing, presenting new opportunities and challenges requiring experienced and knowledgeable leadership. United Power has had much success in the past few years and it has been a privilege to serve you as your United Power Director during these successful years. There are still many challenges facing United Power in our efforts to reduce rates and provide clean, reliable power to your homes, farms and businesses and I would like to continue to represent you. Based on my director certifications I have earned in the past few years I continue to acquire the skills and knowledge necessary to make valuable decisions for all members. I am Dave Rose asking for your vote and support to re-elect me so I can continue to work for you.

I have been active in community events, meetings, and new developments that UP has initiated to better serve all the members in the UP territories. During this time UP has welcomed 2400 new members in Frederick, opened the Carbon Valley Service Center, implemented the Fire Mitigation Policy, exceeded $500 million in assets for the first time and reached 843 consecutive days without loss of time injuries. Also, during this time frame UP built the largest storage battery system in the state and quickly restored power outages during the bomb cyclone winter storm.

These are just a few of the major accomplishments and I know the importance of providing, affordable, reliable, safe, environmentally friendly electrical service to all the residential, agricultural and business members. I will continue to work hard for you as we negotiate with Tri-State to reduce energy rates and provide more flexibility in member choice.

In my continued efforts to serve you I look forward visiting all the communities in the UP territories to meet and listen to UP members’ energy needs.

United Power Director Candidates Announced

ight candidates will be running for election to the United Power board of directors at the cooperative’s 2020 Annual Meeting in April. Members who were interested in running for the board had until February 14 to return petition packets to be considered candidates. This year, four positions on the board are up for election. The director candidates are James Vigesaa in the East District; Tamra Waltemath in the Mountain District; Dave Rose, Greg Campbell, Phil Noble and Stan Martin in the South District; and Ginny Buczek and Jim Menghi in the West District.

United Power hosts four Meet the Candidate events throughout its service territory so members can learn more about each candidate vying to serve on the board of directors. These events are free to members and do not require RSVPs. Although directors live in specific geographic districts, they represent all members and are therefore elected on an “at-large” basis. This means members may cast a vote for a director in each district and not just their own.

The Board of Trustees and Town Staff have been busy working on many projects including a High-Speed Broadband Initiative; a Parks, Open Space and Trails Master Plan; and discussing updating the Land Development Code. All that will have a positive impact on our community! Here are a few other updates to share with the community:

Dacono high school student. Students can attend any high school, but must reside in the City of Dacono. Historically, the scholarships have ranged from $500-$1,000 depending upon the number of qualifying applicants. The application is available on the City website (www.cityofdacono.com) or from local high school guidance counselors.  There are some exciting facility improvements at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center, including: ● Weight room - New flooring, paint, and all new equipment. ● Locker rooms - A total renovation including lockers, benches, showers and additional changing space. ● Swimming pool - Installation of new play features, pool the Town of Mead registered electors at the April 7, 2020 election. The first one is regarding Whether the Town’s regular election date should be moved from April of even-numbered years to November of evennumbered years, commencing in 2022 and the second one is concerning an additional lodging occupation tax commencing on January 1, 2021.  If you are unable to attend the Board of Trustees meetings, the meetings are video recorded to watch at your convenience. Cost: $15.00/person (Cost includes transportation and ticket cost. However, it does not include lunch. Everyone is responsible for cost of lunch.)  The Town of Mead is proud to offer volleyball, basketball, soccer, and tee-ball leagues for youth in the community. Registration for spring youth volleyball and soccer closes soon. For more  The Town of Firestone will conduct its Regular Municipal Election on Tuesday, April 7, 2020. All ballots will be mailed to registered voters. Ballots will be mailed the week of March 16, 2020. During this election, registered voters in Firestone will be electing a Mayor and three (3) Trustees. The Mayor will be elected to serve a two-year term and three Trustees will be elected to serve four-year terms.  Voters will also be asked to vote on Ballot Issue 2A, a ballot question of the Town of Firestone authorizing the use of the 0.6% sales tax approved in 2017 for maintenance and operation of the police and municipal court facility and to construct, maintain, and operate new town facilities without increasing the current total sales and use tax rate of 3.6%. n Saturday, February 22nd, Prairie Ridge Elementary hosted a Vex IQ Robotics Tournament for 32 teams from six different schools across the St. Vrain Valley School District.

Represented schools included Alpine Elementary, Carbon Valley Academy, Fall River Elementary, Indian Peaks Elementary, Rocky Mountain Elementary, and Prairie Ridge itself. The state of Colorado has 200 Vex IQ teams, of which 135 groups belong to the St. Vrain Valley School District, mostly due to the groundbreaking work of the SVVSD Innovation Center, and the hard work of robotics coaches across the districts. PRE robotics coaches Amy Hamblin, Jen Olsen, and Jeff Cannon organized the event. A team of volunteers and student staff from the Innovation Center, judges from CU Boulder and Colorado State University, and top engineering companies assisted them. The goal of the tournament was to allow students to work on technical skills, writing, and communication skills. Jace Lyons, a fourth-grader, exclaimed, “I love all the teamwork!” Fall River Elementary took home the Skills Challenge, Top Team Alliance, and Design Award. Alpine Elementary received the Excellence Award. A Prairie Ridge team including Maddix Frame, Jace Lyons, Ari Viejobueno, and Blake Weingardt won the Judges Award for the first time this year, the second such award the school has gotten in their two years of robotics competitions. Frame, a fifth-grader, said her favorite part of the game was “building the robot and getting better at driving.” Prairie Ridge also honored Evan Alexander, a freshman at Frederick High School, with their Volunteer of the Year Award for his hard work helping the team in a variety of capacities. The Prairie Ridge Elementary coaches want to thank all of the parents and volunteers w h o supported t h e tournament with their time and donations and look forward to hosting in 2021.

Local Volleyball Club is “X-Treme-ly” Good he start of the 2020 club volleyball season for a group of local 16 and 17 year old girls has been nothing short of spectacular! Based out of Firestone, this team from X-Treme Volleyball Club is 18-1 in their first four tournaments bringing home first place “pins” in the first three tournaments and finishing 10th, out of 48 teams, in a recent tournament. The team’s only loss coming at the expense of a boy’s volleyball team allowed to play in the girls’ tournament.

The team is comprised of Head Coach Mike Davis, Asst. Coach Steve Costello, Manager Danae Costello, Team Captains Marah Miranda and Ashley Livingston, Libero Briahna Davis, Outside Hitters Jordan Lawrence and Morgan Krause, Middles Haley Bevel and Amelia Hatch, and Right Side Hitters Evelyn Arroyo and Gracie Jennings. Five girls from Frederick High School, one from Erie High School, one from Mead High School, one from Longmont High School and one from Platte Valley High School!

At first glance this volleyball team looks more like a gymnastic squad than a volleyball team! The tallest player can barely reach the top of the net! However their opponents have made the mistake of underestimating them only to walk away defeated. What they lack in height they make up with speed, agility, and exuberance! But it’s their obvious enthusiasm, and joy for the game, that really stands out! It's a pleasure to watch this team play together.

The team’s coaches don't worry about the team’s lack of size. The two fun loving coaches believe in a different philosophy that doesn’t focus on winning but on teamwork and fun! As Coach Davis says, “Have fun, play hard, and be a good person before being a good athlete!”

The athletes were given a recent homework assignment to describe this season.

Many teammates didn't mention individual plays or victories, but rather the enjoyment of being a part of this “family”. Coaches call it chemistry. One wrote she likes “…how the players' fight for each other, protect one another, and win together". One said that "we're a little team who practices in a little town in a small gym with old nets. It's our heart and determination that defines us…” One mentioned that her favorite memory so far is "…the team sleepovers and creating lifelong bonds with teammates". It's this type of attitude amongst the teammates that has created their winning attitude and their winning record. here is a lot of buzz going around in our local market about things starting to slow down. I think the best way to show you what is happening when times like this occur is by sharing some simple statistics.

Knowing this info will put you in the best position possible to make better financial decisions when it comes to your real estate investments.

These numbers are for the tri-town area and compare the months of January 2019 to January 2020. The number of active homes on the market were 154 in 2019 and increased to 174 in 2020. Total sold homes were 33 in 2019 up to 46 in 2020. Average sales price was $356,828 in 2019 up to $408,828.

What I want you to focus on the most is total sold homes compared to total active homes. If you take the 174 total active and divide it by the 46 that sold, that number comes to about 3.8. That means, if the market were to receive zero new listings, we would run out of inventory in our area in 3.8 months. That is down from the previous year of 4.7 months.

Simply put, the demand is

outweighing the supply and the demand for homes in our area is getting stronger. If this number stays similar, then the market will lean towards sellers and prices will continue to go up. In my opinion, once you get to about a 6-month supply of inventory, then it starts to see a balance for both sides and will slowly start to shift towards a more favorable market for buyers as that number rises.

More so than ever, if you are thinking of buying, get in the market now while the supply is still low, and prices continue to go up. If you are waiting for them to come down, you might be waiting for quite some time and will miss out on gaining great equity while it continues t o rise. Food for the Soul: The Sin of Priority

I

n 1 John 2:15-17, we find these words, “Do not love the world nor the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world. The world is passing away, and also its lusts; but the one who does the will of God lives forever.”

I think it is significant that when John writes about love in this letter, he chooses the Greek term agape….every single time.

Agape is a sacrificial love, one that makes choices and decisions based on what’s spiritually best for self and others. Agape is the decision we make when our words and actions demonstrate that we want the best for someone, even an enemy. This love leads with rational thinking and is a choice, rather than an emotional response, though emotion is never completely separate. For example, your emotions may run high when making a Godly choice that expresses you want the best for an enemy, treating them better than they deserve.

Agape is the kind of love we are engaged in when we use “tough love” with a friend or family member. Above all, we learn about agape from the deliberate decision of our God to sacrifice His Son Jesus so that we might live through Him (1 John 4:9).

I came across something about agape that I found extremely interesting and helpful. The writer said that agape expresses a purposeful devotion and that the things which we love we assign a higher value. In other words, the noblest form of love in the Greek language shows our priority, it highlights what is truly important to each one of us.

In the text quoted at the beginning, John is commanding Christians: Love NOT the world. Do not prefer the things dominated, controlled, or belonging to Satan. Love NOT the things which are in opposition to God. One of our greatest sins in this country is the sin of priority. Often we speak with our mouths that we love God, but by our actions we demonstrate that we place a higher priority and a

#GettingThingsDone: AmeriCorps Service in the Carbon Valley Tyler Vaughan

S

ince 1994, the AmeriCorps program (sometimes referred to as the “domestic PeaceCorps”) has placed dedicated volunteers in one to two-year roles with municipalities, faith groups, and nonprofits all across the country to provide affordable assistance to organizations; the program also gives members invaluable professional experiences and an education award upon completion. Here in Weld County, members serve roles ranging from resource development for local libraries to volunteer recruitment across the entire county. In the Carbon Valley area, there are two Notre Dame Mission Volunteer AmeriCorps Members serving as teachers’ aides with the “I Have A Dream” Foundation of Boulder County (IHDF). IHDF offers long term, tuition-free in-school, after-school and summer school support to students from low income areas in the Boulder Valley and St. Vrain Valley School Districts; In Frederick, IHDF’s Carbon Valley Dreamer Scholar Class is currently enrolled at Thunder Valley K-8.

AmeriCorps members, Maria Morante, 25, and Noah Warner, 20, both serve at the same site with the same cohort of nearly fifty 6th grade students, but have unique responsibilities and came to their respective roles in very different ways.

Maria is a native Coloradan who recently graduated from the University of Northern Colorado with a bachelor’s degree in Philosophy. Like many recent graduates, Maria wasn’t sure what her next steps ought to be, but this changed when she accepted a summer AmeriCorps position with IHDF in 2018. Though she was new to working with youth, she quickly felt connected to the community provided by the students in the class and fellow AmeriCorps service members. She is now in her second service year with the class and contemplating life after AmeriCorps. While reflecting on the past two years, Maria said, “this experience has taught me I can do a lot of stuff : I can handle a lot. I’ve learned to stand up for myself professionally, to trust myself and what I’ve learned professionally, how to work with someone I’ve never met before, and how to be resilient and overall confident.”

Unlike Maria, Noah moved to the Centennial State from Pennsylvania to take on this role with IHDF in September 2019. He chose to use this opportunity as a professional development gap year between his 1st and 2nd of college. When asked about why he chose to take a gap year serving others, Noah replied, “I want to go into teaching, and this is one of the closest things you can do [to teaching] without being a teacher.” Despite having only been serving for a few months, Noah has already gained extraordinary classroom experience that would have otherwise been difficult to attain.

Remember this, the things you love in life, you’ll do more for. The things we prioritize first, the things we give the highest value, we give the most time and energy toward. And think, we don’t even need to verbalize these decisions, our actions and choices for how we spend our time communicate our priorities, and by extension, these choices communicate what we actually love.

John is not condemning your love for music, or that perfect cup of coffee, or for your spouse or family, or for momma’s cooking. You may enjoy all of these things.

The issue is when you agape them, when you place your music, your mom, your hobbies, your work, and even your life above following God and doing His will.

John says if you love the world, if you prefer the world and place a higher value on living your life as you please, then the love of the Father is not in you.

Living in the world while not being of

the world is difficult. John says the world is passing away along with its lusts. It takes a certain dedication to do the will of God, but in the end the Christian struggle against self and sin is worth it. God is looking for people who will quit practicing sin, and practice righteousness instead. God is looking for people who endeavor to prefer His ways, to prioritize His standard, while doing their best to say “No” to the lusts of this life. So, what do your choices say about your priority and love?

Healthy Alternative Health Care: Acupuncture Transition to Spring

M

arch begins the transition from Winter to Spring, which is traditionally a time of year when food stores for winter run low, and less heavy meals are eaten.

People would naturally go through a digestive cleansing process prior to the next growing season. According to Chinese medical theory, the transition between each season relates to the Earth element, digestion, and taking good care of ourselves and others. In this article we will ponder how to strike a balance during this time of change.

The digestive system is one of our first known sources of comfort and security since babies are held very closely for breast or bottle feeding. From birth, eating is a truly pleasurable experience.

Though sometimes it can be difficult to keep the pleasure during meals, it is worth trying to come back to the ecstasy of eating and maintaining a harmonious digestive system. Stress and having to eat meals quickly can cause digestive upset such as constipation, diarrhea, abdominal pain and bloating, acid reflux, nausea and vomiting, changes in digestion with menstruation, and inflammatory conditions such as irritable bowel and celiac disease. Some people find relief just with a change in diet or by eliminating suspect and inflammation causing foods.

As an acupuncture practitioner, I treat

through many avenues such as suggesting foods that assist to mildly detoxify the system, probiotics and individualized dietary and exercise recommendations.

In order to treat chronic digestive disturbances, I have found that a combination of the above works best.

Since winter is a time when we rest more, eat larger and heavier meals, and our focus turns inward, the time between Winter and Spring is particularly important to begin “spring cleaning” - to prepare ourselves for spring, when our focus begins to become more outward. Even the foods that are available transition to the outward vegetables that grow above ground, such as leafy greens, as opposed to the winter time root vegetables that grow below ground.

As we move through this transition, this time of year is particularly important to strike a balance. Finding this balance depends heavily upon our ability to first take care of ourselves so that when we are caring for others, or beginning new spring time projects, we are feeling our best. he Town of Frederick is partnering with Frederick High School and local organizations to give students a chance to give back to their community by giving up a bit of their time over spring break. Youth ages 14 and up will be able to sign up for any (or all!) of the projects facilitated by Habitat for Humanity of the St. Vrain Valley Restore, Brigit’s Bounty Community Resources, Graceful Oaks Youth Ranch, and Bella Rosa Golf Course. Each service project will range in hours, typically between two and four hours. Students can sign up for the projects at FrederickCO.gov/Volunteer. All students must sign up and have their parents sign a waiver before participating in any of the fun projects.

News from the Firestone Free Thinkers 4-H Club To Make The Best Better-Learning By Doing The February meeting was held at Rinn Church On February 2, at 3 P M. It was a beautiful sunny day with a temperature of 75 degrees.

We had a picnic type meeting with a very interesting presentation by Keith Maxey on parliamentary procedure and Roberts Rules of Order. Roberts Rules of Order is an age old method of conducting a meeting efficiently where everyone is encouraged to share their ideas. Have you ever been to a meeting which was unorganized, strayed off subject and there was chatter among individuals and no one knew what was going on? The Roberts method avoids all that and results in a meaningful meeting that gets results.

Ken has a very unique method of teaching the class and holding the kids attention by using Roberts Rule of Order to make a batch of Trail Mix. He had seven different ingredients lined up on the table. To start the motion one member raised their hand and was recognized by the president. “I make a motion to put Rice Chex in the mix.”

Another said, “I second that motion” This was followed by an orderly discussion where everyone was encouraged to speak. Following the discussion, the question was asked by the president, “All in favor of putting Chex Mix in the mix say aye.” This was followed by a resounding aye. Then the president says, “all oppose say no.” There was no opposition.

President says “motion carried.”

This procedure was followed for several other ingredients that made it into the bowl.

Then the peanuts came up for a motion and a second. During the discussion one boy stated that he was allergic to peanuts while others liked peanuts. When the vote was taken the peanuts were left out for consideration of the boy with allergies. Several other items were added including raisins.

When the bowl was filled a motion was made and passed for all to get a sample of the mix.

estiny Church of Fort Lupton is a hopping place these days, says Pastor Rob Rocca, Lead Pastor. Since his arrival in August of 2015 the church has been growing, expanding and changing to meet the needs of the community around them which includes Fort Lupton, Tri-town, Brighton, Hudson/ Lochbuie and Platteville. In fact, Destiny’s influence reaches as far as Thornton, Longmont and Bennett. Their staff has expanded to include a full time associate pastor over youth, a children’s director and office/women’s director.

Destiny has recently undergone a major renovation having completely stripped the upper level of their building, renovating the lower level including lifts to make it handicap accessible, adding on a small expansion for administration, and restructuring to accommodate the growth that is occurring there. All of this has been to prepare for expanding their service schedule, which starting EASTER SUNDAY, April 12th, will now include two identical services at 9AM and 10:30AM. One of the big features of their renovation is a larger entry foyer where they serve free donuts and coffee every Sunday morning starting at 10AM. Destiny offers services with messages that inspire, a full praise band of guitars, drums, keys and vocals with dynamic music for worship, and inspiring messages that are relevant to today’s family and its needs. The congregation is proudly multicultural and multigenerational with exciting Kid’s and Youth ministries. They also offer small groups for connecting in community and to learn. Another focus of Destiny is their desire to Love, Give and Serve the local community and the church family has been actively engaging in community by serving civil servants like teachers, police and firefighters and joining alongside the local Parks and Rec department in providing assistance for Community events. The church’s goal is to be a Christ honoring, Hope Giving, Community of Faith where anyone and everyone can find Direction for Life!

Teresa Lyn "Teri" Heifner (nee Foust) passed away at her home in Frederick, Colorado, on January 28, 2020, surrounded by her loving family.

Teri was born in Denver, Colorado on July 18, 1963 to parents LaVonne (Segmiller) and William Foust. Except for a short period of time living in California Teri spent her life in Colorado.

On April 27, 1989 Teri married Jon Heifner.

Two wonderful sons, Paxton Lawrence and Mason Conrad, are the result of their union. She is survived by her sons and husband as well as mother LaVonne Sticka, brother Douglas Foust, sister-in-law Joan Kawano and her family and many cousins. Teri was predeceased by father William, in-laws, Robert and Annette Heifner, and brother-in-law Russell Heifner.

Teri was a gregarious, loving, generous, kind, caring and compassionate person. She spent her life affectionately tending to her family, friends and home. She will be forever loved and missed by those fortunate enough to have been touched by her brief presence on earth.

St. Brigit To Celebrate Vernal Equinox

h, Spring in Colorado! One day it’s 74 degrees and sunny. The next day it’s 14 degrees and snowing…

Come celebrate the return of Spring in all its glorious unpredictability at St. Brigit Episcopal Church on Friday, March 20, at 7:00p.m.

Just as Spring promises growth and change, so does life. Change requires growth.

Growth can be painful, and safe places are needed in order to be refreshed for the journey ahead. St Brigit invites you to such a place, where you can indulge in a time of spiritual sanctuary and renewal in celebration of the Vernal Equinox.

St. Brigit’s Vernal Equinox celebration is a part of its Áit Caol series. Áit Caol (pronounced atch qweel) is Gaelic for “A Thin Place.” These quarterly services are created to offer guests an experience of God through a unique liturgy, which combines ancient tradition with contemporary language. They include specially designed and engaging meditation areas, which bring scripture to life, and ethereal music with a Celtic sound.

Ancient people marked this day with thanksgiving for the return of light and warmth.

Spring promised rebirth and hope. In the Christian Church, the Vernal Equinox is significant in that it is used in determining the date of Easter, the first Sunday following the first full moon after the Equinox.

Older children are welcome at the Vernal Equinox celebration. Childcare will be provided for children under age six. Guests are invited to come early to walk St. Brigit’s outdoor labyrinth, weather permitting.

Medium to deep greens on the bright side will create a bold, elegant room. Take a look at Sherwin Williams Kilkenny, Espalier or Lucky Green to see if they might provide the perfect backdrop to your furnishing and upholstery. If you would rather have a soft, healing atmosphere in your home, try a sagey green, such as Sherwin Williams Clary Sage or Liveable Green, if going light.

Sometimes business owners are “too close” to their business. They don’t know what other people don’t know! After an assessment of their current efforts, we create a Digital Strategy together.

Here are some practical tips that I usually share. Have a giveaway once a month. Post a video once a week (under three minutes).

Have things like “Motivational Monday” or “Testimonial Tuesday”. ALWAYS include a photo or website link on your post. Consider who your ideal customer is and create ads to bring them to your page. Do “Show & Tell”. People love when you explain how

you do things.
