By Jan Sciacca We enjoy the sun but in our very mobile I-25 Corridor communities, we’re in our cars a lot and it’s that time of year again when we wonder if there’s a right window tinting solution for us from a dealer we can trust. Consider contacting locals Dan and Sue Wedel, who own D&S Enterprises LLC. Dan started tinting car, house and business windows with a longtime friend in 1990 and opened D&S Window Tinting in North Boulder in 1995. Since Dan and Sue had moved their household to Frederick and loved smaller town living, they decided to bring the business “home” to Frederick. In late 2011 they found a garage condo unit for sale in the I-25/CO 52 Glacier Business Park and made the leap home to Weld County. Dan has always loved to work on and with cars. R & D Auto Care An Auto Repair Shop and Community Neighbor

By Jan Sciacca Our community is blessed to have Roger and Debbie Hoogland (pronounced Hoagland) locate their auto repair shop in Firestone. Although the official address is 478 1st St., you’ll know exactly how to find Roger because he and Debbie bought the Firestone post office building and are in the shop area on the south side of the building. The U. S. Postal Service now rents space from them.

Roger has worked 20+ years in the Denver area for Bridgestone/Firestone. As times changed, he became disenchanted with the large corporate environment. He wanted to work where people mattered and the concern was for the customer and not the profit margin. Roger decided he should either do something now or take an early retirement. That’s when he talked to his long-time friend Bruce Richard of B & J Auto Parts in Erie and learned of the shortage of independent auto repair shops in the community. The area sounded appealing but finding commercial affordable space in the I-25 Corridor for such an endeavor was challenging. Roger’s dream took a while to unfold. In June 2013, he met Al who ran the former auto body

I’m reading a novel right now about a young woman who was I talk to God and ask Him to help me get the things done today that an abandoned newborn. She grew up with multiple abandonments need to get done. I ask, “What first?” and then I get to work on that and over the years accepted that life happened “to her.” She found one thing and one-by-one I complete a task and I’m able to stay on herself in situations where she simply needed to make the choice to task. And you know what? The laundry can wait until tomorrow. It’s do something else, but she didn’t make that choice. She continues to such a simple process. I ALWAYS mentally kick myself on the days move through life based on the choices others are making for her, as I don’t make the choice to spend those few minutes with the Lord.

I’m sure the woman in the novel will end up making the right if, she has no say, no voice.

It made me think of how I was raised. My mom taught me to say choices for herself but thus far, she is exactly how I used to be and “no” in certain situations. However she didn’t teach me how to be sometimes still am.

If you were a fly on the wall, you would probably think I was a persistent, strong and steadfast with what I wanted for me. Because of that, many undesirable things happened to me and for many years mental case. I talk out loud, use hand gestures and yes, it looks like of my life, I’ve lived like that character in the novel. I moved through I’m talking to an invisible friend. That is exactly what my life is like most of my life, living with the choices others made for me. I felt that with Christ. He is my invisible friend. I know He is with me, in every situation, at the computer, in the living room, shopping at Costco, I had no voice, no choice.

But I do have a choice. And while it took me getting to 50 years of age eating out at dinner….everywhere!

And yes, He was with me at the hospital when I was told Alisha to figure that out, it is so refreshing and empowering to have the ability to evaluate situations and ponder the what-ifs and consider the possibilities as had died and in my kitchen when I heard the words, Jason died. Everything from hot rods to rat rods will be there- pickups and originals, muscle cars and street rods. All will be 1980 or older and you’ll be amazed at the creativity and talent that has gone into their restoration. Letter to the Editor:

I wrote a letter that was published in the February CVCR regarding the Town of Frederick’s stated intent to take over the New Town electrical distribution system from United Power.

New Town is the name given to the approximately two-thirds of the Frederick system that is outside the original part of Frederick where the town already owns the distribution system. Since then I have learned from trustees that no actual decision has yet been made by the board to acquire the New Town system. However, they are investigating buying it and providing electrical power service to all of Frederick. Some think this might provide better, cheaper service to all residents and provide an advantage in attracting new businesses.

I want to make clear I have no connection to United Power other than having them as a power provider in the Frederick New Town area for almost 10 years. As a retiree living on a relatively fixed income, I just want the lowest cost reliable electric service, including maintenance of the distribution system, and the lowest town taxes. In that regard, it certainly seems counter-intuitive that this idea could possibly be the best solution.

There are only 29 cities and towns, including Frederick Old Town, in all of Colorado that own and operate their own electric system. No other town in the Carbon Valley area is in this group. About the only municipal systems that generate their own power are Colorado Springs and a combined operation of Estes Park, Fort Collins, Longmont and Loveland. The rest buy from wholesale power providers including investor owned companies like Xcel and cooperatives like United Power.

Frederick currently obtains all of its power including that for Old Town from United Power.

Even if they acquired the entire distribution system, the Town of Frederick would still have to buy its power from another supplier such as United Power so there would be no savings in generation or transmission cost. And, an inexperienced, smaller, less focused entity, like the town government is unlikely to be able to operate and maintain the distribution system more efficiently than United Power, a not-for-profit cooperative whose only business is providing electrical utility service.

As noted in my original letter, the cost of compensating United Power for the New Town distribution facilities could be substantial. In addition, Colorado statute requires a municipality when taking over service from a cooperative to pay the cooperative twenty-five percent of the revenue received from the acquired customers for ten years after the takeover. All of this makes it extremely remote that there would be savings from such a takeover.

Unfortunately, what could occur by controlling the entire system is that, and I’m not saying the current board has this

Even at the local level, it’s better not to have government in control of things it doesn’t need to control.

Taking over the entire electrical distribution system by the town doesn’t seem likely to be advantageous to residential power customers or to taxpayers. I urge all Frederick residents to join me in asking our town board to keep us fully apprised of the progress of the study and, when complete, to make the results available to all residents for perusal and comment before any action is taken. In any event, the board should put the final decision to the vote of the residents.

zz April 9, 2014 began my service as the mayor of our community. I am honored to have been elected and look forward to working with the Firestone board as we continue moving our community into the future.

My goal is to continue using our community survey, Town website, Firestone Voice, social media outlets, local newspapers, community events, email and one-on-one conversation to promote two-way communications for our community. zz In our latest community survey, it was no surprise that Firestone continued to be rated as a great place to live. The highest ratings pointed to a community where raising our children in a safe neighborhood environment was obvious. Quality of life wasn’t far behind, and residents also gave high ratings for our community parks and trails. zz Our areas of improvement are no surprise either. Tony Carey You may have heard of our new HEAL Committee and their goals of promoting Healthy Eating and Active Living in Frederick and during the month of May, we invite you to take the Get Movin’ Challenge. Get active for thirty minutes a day throughout May and sign up at www.

Having this tool available may be the mechanism we have needed to get some of these businesses beyond the looking stage and into the development stage. zz I am excited about some of the new construction projects that are well on their way in Firestone. The First Choice Emergency Room is anticipated to open this summer and will fill an important role in 24-hour emergency care. On the east Interstate 25 Frontage Road near the existing hotels north of Firestone Boulevard, there is a building under construction that will provide new business, warehouse and light manufacturing that will create additional employment opportunities in Firestone. zz Single-family housing has gained speed again and there are a few new projects that are moving along into the final stages of planning for multi-family housing options. This addition to our community will provide for the transitional housing for children moving into their first apartments, senior parents looking to move closer to their grandchildren without the expense or burden of home ownership, or residents downsizing to a more affordable option. zz The widening of Firestone Boulevard this summer is the first step in public infrastructure improvements that was made possible by the 1 percent sales tax and bond initiative that passed in November 2013. A road condition survey is set to be conducted in May which will map our entire Town’s road conditions to help prioritize our street improvements based on actual test results. You may see

this special vehicle driving around Town during this process. This survey will allow us to develop a game plan based on actual visual and sub grade conditions. zz Summer is a time to get outside and enjoy the wonderful Colorado environment. Our community is filled with fun activities and events planned for your involvement and enjoyment. As for community events, the second annual Carbon Valley Half Marathon is set for May 17 at the Firestone Regional Sports Complex. This event shows how community individuals come together to host an event to raise money for autism. zz The Town will also be gearing up for its summer event season. Food & Flick Fridays start on June 6 at Hart Park. These funfilled Friday evenings throughout the summer will include food trucks in the park, live music, fitness fun and games from the Carbon Valley Recreation District, face painting and a movie on the big screen.

The first annual Community Softball Tournament will be on June 7 at the Sports Complex and will allow teams to compete for a traveling trophy and a day full of athletic fun. I am excited to begin working with this team as we continue to move our community forward. Having been in the industry for 17 years, there have been lots of memorable moments but the one that stands out the most is the time Dan had to stand on a ladder that was on four levels of scaffolding, hanging a large piece of tint film on the top level of a wall of glass overlooking all of Boulder Valley. Sue has been involved with town politics and served two terms on the Frederick Town Board as Trustee and was also Mayor pro tem. Firestone Police Department Awarded CACP Re-accreditation

The Firestone Police Department has earned its Professional Standards re-accreditation through the Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP). This certification identifies professional operating standards for police agencies in Colorado.

Firestone Police Chief David Montgomery was presented with the re-accreditation at the April 23, 2014, Board of Trustees meeting by Gary Barbour, who is the Professional Standards Committee chairman.

The Firestone Police Department received its first CACP certification in 1994. It was renewed for another five years in 1999, 2004 and 2009.

The recognition by CACP marks years of dedicated and hard work performed by members of the Firestone Police Department. The award insures that department’s policies and procedures are consistent with the best practices used in police departments across the state of Colorado.

by Lee Schlais The Town of Frederick has sponsored a Healthy Eating, Active Living (HEAL) Committee. So, just exactly what is a HEAL committee and what is its purpose?

In partnership with Live Well Colorado the Frederick HEAL committee was put in place to raise awareness about critical public health issues and mobilize the local community to establish policies to improve the health of citizens. Live Well Colorado works toward a vision of Colorado communities where physical, social, and economic conditions support the health and well being of all residents, and in which health disparities no longer exist.

As such the vision of the Frederick HEAL Committee is, “The Town of Frederick will be the leader in the Carbon Valley and in the State of Colorado in integrating healthy eating and active living into our community.” We intend to do this by being active, involved and visible at all Town events this year. We will be providing, not only information on healthy eating, but we will also be organizing many fun activities for the citizens and their families in the Carbon Valley area.

The mission of the Frederick HEAL Committee is “Providing easy viable opportunities for healthy eating and active living for those that live, work and play in the Carbon Valley.”

This is not about us telling you what to do or what to eat, this is just about raising awareness about many critical health factors that sometimes get over looked.

One of our first activities is to get as many people as possible signed up and participating in the second annual Colorado Get Movin’ Challenge. The challenge event is sponsored by Live Well Colorado to kick-start a healthier lifestyle and prove that Colorado is the most active state in the nation! Log 30 minutes of daily activity from May 1-30, 2014. We ask that you sign up for 30 minutes for 30 days and register for the Town of Frederick. You can sign up by going to http://getmovinchallenge.org/ . We are hopeful that Frederick will be the top contender this year, with your help we can make that happen.

We will have a booth at the Farmer’s Markets this year on Thursday afternoons and evenings. We are excited about the extended hours of the Farmer’s Market this year.

We are organizing some great family activities that will provide fun for the whole family at the Town events and more through out the coming summer. Community BBQ at Shalom Bikes

Just over one month until Angel and Carlos peddle their way across 864 miles in 2.5 days or less! The Carbon Valley Community has been helpful in supporting this endeavor via financial contributions, donations of used bikes and other items to be auctioned at the May 10, community BBQ at Shalom Bikes in Frederick at 142 Sixth Street. The event is from 11am to 3pm. A bicycle valued at $3,000 will be auctioned off along with other items. The BBQ is followed by a Group Ride from 7-10pm.

Team Shalom, Angel and Carlos, is participating in their second event, Race Across the West, a world renowned bicycle race where teams compete to cross the finish line first but also to raise funds for local charities. Team Shalom is supporting a local youth group. Overall, Team Shalom needs to raise $10k which supports the youth group, pays registration and other essentials for the race.

The Flower Bin, owned by Don and Lee Weakland, is celebrating 43 years in business at the same location in Longmont at the southwest corner of Sunset and Nelson. And they are gearing up for the busiest weekend of the whole year, May 10 & 11, Mother’s Day weekend.

Love flowers? They have 4,000 roses in the Rose House. How about petunias, native flowers like Columbines and Larkspur, or do you lean towards xeriscaping which takes little to no water except natural precipitation?

Need a gift? Chimes, pottery, bird baths, garden hats, statuaries, doormats, fountains, and so much more to choose from. Plus they have water features, yard flags and home décor for every season. The Flower Bin is a full service garden center for the newbie and the highly experienced gardener.

The Weaklands are proud of their Edible Greenhouse. They have fresh herbs, tomatoes, peppers, orange, lemon and lime trees, all growing in the greenhouse. Don says, “Coloradans don’t typically see orange trees but you can grow them outside in the summer and bring them in when the weather gets cooler.” In the past, these plants were in various parts of the property but now the staff has built the greenhouse where all edibles are in one location. It’s quite impressive. This project evolved over the last seven years or so as popularity of growing nontoxic produce grew. “Consumers are demanding better, healthier choices in all areas of their lives. They want organic, clean food. We provide that for them,” Don explains.

The couple has lived in Longmont since 1969 and started their business in 1971 with carnations. They provided cut carnations to local retailers until they realized carnations weren’t cutting it for bringing in enough money to keep the business going. At that time, they made the decision to expand their business and offer many more products. And look at them now!

Over the years, they had five sons; all of which have worked at or are working at The Flower Bin. A couple of them own their own garden centers in nearby towns and one also owns his own brewery, called High Hops in Windsor.

The Flower Bin is well known for their “Legendary Hanging Baskets.” I asked what made them legendary and Don shared that they are a 24” basket that the flowers grow to be about three feet across and hang down 5-6 feet. He says people can keep them looking beautiful with lots of water and fertilizer. Don says, “Nobody in the state grows as big and nice of baskets as we do.”

This full service garden center takes pride in the knowledge they have to offer consumers. The staff is always available to answer your questions and help solve your growing dilemmas. They have a free service to help you diagnose problems. You can bring in a patch of your lawn, with the soil, and they will help you figure out how to make it grow better. Is it Time to Paint?

It’s spring inspection time again. Look for these signs to determine whether it’s time to paint your home exterior.

Peeling Paint The most obvious visible sign - we often see these problems around window trim, areas where lawn sprinklers spray the house and where caulking has failed. Another area is at soffits where gutters have developed tiny leaks causing moisture to escape. This needs to be addressed and once the gutter is repaired priming and painting follow. Sometimes siding replacement is necessary.

Cracked or peeled caulk Problems with caulk should be addressed immediately using top quality caulk and investing the time to apply it properly.

Rot Rotting wood siding or trim generally needs replaced unless it is in an area where it may not be practical. In those cases, we can use an epoxy repair system before priming & painting.

Fluffy siding Check the bottom edges of your siding. If you observe this condition it should be addressed this season. We take steps to prep these areas and work materials into the grain for protection.

Mold and/or mildew Wetter than usual weather can increase our chances of mold and mildew appearing, particularly on the north side or our homes because there is less or no sun to evaporate moisture. Our remedy for these problems is to power wash, then follow with a top quality paint that contains mildewcide, most often using Sherwin Williams Duration exterior house paint.

Have your painter check your home for trouble spots before they escalate. Investing the time to inspect your home every spring and fall will save you money in the long run.

Who is Cooper?

Sweet little Cooper, 8 years old is a little boy in our community. He was diagnosed with autism & global developmental delay at three years of age.

Cooper and his family moved to Frederick on labor day weekend 2010. After a short introduction to kindergarten in North Carolina, we entered Prairie Ridge Elementary. Cooper was placed in an allinclusive Autism classroom and flourished with the wonderful resources of the Saint Vrain Valley School District.

Cooper attends weekly therapies at Inspiring Talkers for speech and occupational therapy. He also works at The Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center in a hippo therapy program.

Cooper struggles with communication and eating. He has 2 brothers and 1 sister, 2 labrador retrievers, and his mommy and daddy (Kim & Kevin). Mommy applied to the Sunshine Foundation for a Dream Wish for cooper about a year ago.

The loving people at the Sunshine Foundation will be sending Cooper and his family to Walt Disney World in Orlando Florida. To make this possible, a fund raising golf tournament will be taking place at The Olde Course at Loveland on June 7th. The organization fundraises to provide wishes to children with life altering disabilities. Firestone Police Department Hosts Crisis Intervention Training for Officers

While local teachers and students had a week off for spring break, Coal Ridge Middle School in Firestone was the site of Crisis Intervention Training for 31 Northern Colorado police officers. The Firestone Police Department hosted the training the week of March 31, 2014. Two officers from the Firestone Police Department were enrolled in the training course – Sgt. Alan Yoder and Officer Sean Yang, as well as officers from 10 other agencies. The Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) model is designed to train law enforcement officers in the recognition of mental illness, enhance verbal crisis de-escalation skills and to provide more streamlined access to community-based mental health services.

Firestone Officer and CIT Course Director Ray Bueno said the training helps officers work with people of any mental capability and helps improve their communication skills. Bueno said residents with mental health issues are often confused when approached by an officer, making the situation even more difficult for that individual and the officer responding. CIT training prepares the officer to approach the situation in a manner that will help all parties.

The course was set up to encompass classroom learning, as well as role playing activities.

CIT was developed in 1988 in Memphis as a partnership between the police department, advocacy groups for people with mental illness, mental health treatment providers, and other community stakeholders.

The CIT course is a threecounty effort funded

by Colorado Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.).

Rinn United Methodist Church is hosting its A member of the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce annual Pig Roast and Silent Auction, June 7th, from 5:00 to 7:30 pm. Firestone Cleans Up After 1,212 Loads Dumped During 13th Annual Clean up Day

A total of 1,212 loads were disposed of during the Town of Firestone’s 13th Annual Clean up Day and Food Drive on April 26, 2014.

Open to Firestone residents, this cleanup allows people to bring unwanted household debris to be disposed of through a community-wide effort.

The closest place for residents to dispose of their unwanted items is the Denver Regional Landfill in Erie, which costs an average of $56 a load for residents to utilize. With that said, the Town’s Cleanup Day saved Firestone residents more than $67,872.

Residents kept the loads coming throughout the day and built upon the large piles left containing tree limbs, metal, tires, furniture and many other items.

In addition to the cleanup, the Town of Firestone also welcomed residents to donate nonperishable food items as part of a food drive to benefit the Carbon Valley Help Center. A total of 49 boxes of food and $87 was donated. Residents also joined Town staff and elected officials for a free pancake breakfast and a hot dog or hamburger lunch.

Then in December 2013 Roger and Debbie finally acquired the building. Their first day in business as R & D Auto Care was March 10.

Since opening, there has been a steady stream of customers. Roger prides himself in offering prompt quality auto repair at affordable prices. He works on all makes and models – American, European and Asian. In addition to himself, he is blessed to have employee Connie assist him in the office, and mechanics Harv and Tyler help him in the shop.

Roger’s eager to get involved in the community and would like to offer his facility as a location for car wash fundraisers for student groups, etc. It’s no secret that Roger has a huge heart for helping people and local charities. R & D Auto Care is also a members of the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce.

Although Roger comments that he knows trust is earned, he wants residents to know that R & D is a “safe” place where quality and work ethics are the norm and not the exception.

When asked what memorable experiences he’d had since the shop opened, Roger said he was amazed at the friendliness of the old town Firestone neighborhood, with nearly everyone within walking distance having shown up to say “hello.” Many of them have already brought their cars to him.

Roger and Debbie have been married 34 years and have two adult sons Brad and Jeremiah. Roger and Debbie love to travel and hope that, after they adjust to the demands of a new business, they will be able to resume vacations to San Diego and the Pacific Beach area of California.

Firestone Grateful for Representative Lori Saine’s Efforts to Oppose URA Bill

FIRESTONE, Colorado – The Town of Firestone continues to monitor the progress House Bill 14-1375, which would affect how the Town utilizes its local control of its Urban Renewal Authority (URA) to rehabilitate blighted areas of the community.

District 63 Representative Lori Saine, who serves the Firestone area, has championed the opposition to HB 141375. The Town is grateful for her efforts to oppose the URA legislation as it would significantly dampen the Town’s local retail and employment opportunities in Firestone redevelopment areas.

Full Moon 5k for Colon Cancer

Local “Meadeorite” Carly Bolin “Pearl” was diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis at only 2 weeks old.

Cystic Fibrosis or CF is a fatal genetic disease that affects the respiratory and digestive systems, causing premature death. Just 2 generations ago, most children with CF didn't live long enough to attend elementary school. Today, nearly half of people with CF are age 18 or older. Impressive progress has been made, but so much more needs to be done. Cystic Fibrosis affects tens of thousands of children and adults. Our Goal is to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis & to raise funds to help find a cure. Great Strides - a nationwide fundraiser for the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation raises money to support vital research for a cure. It's the perfect way for friends, family and coworkers to come together and make a difference. Last year, the event raised over $60,000. This year, with your help, we hope to raise over $64,000 to support life-saving research endeavors.

Full Moon 5k for Colon Cancer is back for its 3rd year! Because of our past success, the race is moving to Longmont, Co in 2014.

The event will be held from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Sept. 6, at Dawson Park at McIntosh Lake at 1757 Harvard St. The race raises money for colon cancer awareness and benefits the Longmont United Hospital Foundation.

The 5k starts at 8:30 a.m. and kids' fun run is set for 9:30 a.m. Racers and other attendees will also be able to enjoy activities throughout the day, which will include a variety of business and nonprofit vendors, face painting, balloons, a caricature artist, free massages for all participants and more.

The Full Moon 5k for Colon Cancer utilizes the trail around McIntosh Lake, is chip timed and certified by the USA Track and Field Association.

The Full Moon 5k was organized by family and friends in honor of Firestone resident Sindy Angelovich, who was diagnosed with colon cancer on Dec. 16, 2011, at the age of 48. She went through surgery that month at Longmont United Hospital to remove a mass from her colon along with 31 lymph nodes. She went through chemotherapy from January to June 2012 at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers and continues to fight the good fight with family and friends on her side.

Dacono Citywide Garage Sales

Residents throughout the City of Dacono are encouraged to hold coordinated garage sales. Residents may register individual, multi-family, or block garage sales. Registration is free and a limited number of free garage sale signs are available.

The citywide sale will be advertised in local newspapers, and on the city's website and Facebook page. Advertisements will indicate sales begin at 8 a.m., however start your sale at a time most convenient for you!

Food Bank Truck at Rec's Gymnastics Center

Weld County Food Truck to park at the Gymnastics Center the first Thursday of every month. The food bank helps support about 50 families in our area. They are in need of volunteers from 11:45 to 1:30 on those dates; two people to do check-in and people that can sort and bag food or lift a box for an elderly person if necessary. There is no need to check in with the Rec Center just show up at the gymnastics center and you will see the food truck. Just check in with the driver. The dates are June 5th, July 3rd, Aug 7th, Sept 4th, Oct 2nd, Nov 6th, Dec 4th 2014.

The Town of Frederick is very excited to start preparing for the fourth season of the Frederick Market, which will be the best (and biggest) one yet! Garden Plots Available for the 2014 Season at the Firestone Community Garden

With the prime growing season right around the corner, community members can now rent garden plots in the Firestone Community Garden, located on the property just north of the Firestone Town Hall, 151 Grant Ave. The community garden allows residents the opportunity to grow vegetables and flowers in three garden plot sizes: 4-by-8 foot, 8-by-8 foot and 8-by-16 foot. In addition, a limited number of plots are elevated with wood timbers to make gardening more convenient for older adults.

Garden rental prices are $15, $40 and $60, respectively, with senior discount pricing available.

The rental fees cover administration costs of the garden, as well as the water, which is supplied by the Town of Firestone. The garden is established as an organic garden, thus no pesticides or chemicals are allowed.

The community garden rental agreement is available at Firestone Town Hall and online at http://www.ci.firestone.co.us/CommunityGarden. The website also includes a garden map.

The Firestone Community Garden was established in 2010 with a goal of getting community members involved with the Firestone community to promote healthy living and wellbeing by growing their own gardens.

Firestone Boulevard Widening Project to be Broken Into Two Parts

FIRESTONE, Colorado – The Firestone Boulevard widening project will kick off early this summer and proceed into the fall as the project will now be broken into two parts. The widening will allow for two lanes of traffic in each direction between Cimarron Street and Birch Street. The first phase will tackle the utility work that is needed to be able to widen the roadway, and the second phase will be the actual pavement widening.

The Firestone Board of Trustees opted to break the project into two parts after only a single bid was received during the request for proposals earlier this year. That bid came in much higher that Town staff estimated, which Town Engineer Dave Lindsay contributes to the increase in construction work in Northern Colorado due to the 2013 flooding. The Board of Trustees understands the construction pressure and rebuilding process, but also wants to continue to be good stewards of tax payer money. Breaking the project into two pieces will allow the Town to significantly decrease the total cost of the project as compared to the bid received.

Lindsay said the first project will involve lowering a 12-inch Central Weld County Water District water line in two locations. “Lowering the water line is necessary so that we can extend a bank of concrete box culverts and a storm pipe on the south side of the roadway near the old dairy,” he said. The water line work should begin by June and is estimated to take two months to complete.

The second piece of the project will include the actual paving of the roadway widening, which should take about a month to complete.

Did You Invent God?

I am an inventor. Well at least I would like to think I am. I have tried many attempts at many different creations. I constantly think in my mind how can I make something quicker, faster, better, smarter, sharper, or more user friendly. Ultimately, when it comes down to it, I realize that I am usually not creating something BRAND new, but rather improving on technology that already exists. I always get excited when I finally come up with that one idea that I feel like will really go well with the people I introduce the invention to. The problem comes in when they point out all the problems with my ideas. They knock many holes into to it, leaving me discouraged and maybe even slightly embarrassed. I often wonder, “Why didn't I think of the thoughts that they gave me?”

Too often I believe we try to invent God the same way. We make God the god of our own choosing rather than the God of the Scriptures. In Matthew 21, Jesus was making His final entry into Jerusalem for His last week of His life! Christ orchestrated this week from the very beginning. This was Passover week and Christ orchestrated everything this week, from the week that it was, to the day that He rode into Jerusalem, to the people that would be there, to the very day that He would die.

What is interesting about this passage is that the Jews shouted from the mountain tops that indeed this Christ was not just a savior, but the Savior. He was the Messiah!

In Matthew 21:9 the Bible says, “And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, 'Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!''' What is interesting about this phrase is that Hosanna means “Save Now!” And to follow they called Him the “Son of David” This phrase is a Messianic Title for the Messiah, the Savior of Souls! This was not just any title, but the title of the Savior of the world. The Jews indeed knew that this truly was the True Messiah, the True Savior of the World.

However, the Jews did not see Him as a Savior of their souls, but they were looking for a king or a savior of the city of Jerusalem. They were looking for a conqueror. They were looking for someone to conquer Rome. Further on this point, the palm branches that they put down symbolize a conqueror. Christ did not come to make war. He came to make peace. An eternal peace through an eternal Salvation.

Too often, just like these Jews, we make God the god of our liking rather than the God of the Bible. We invent what we think God should be. The only truth is that we need to make sure that our God, is the God of the Word. Not making God, the God of our fleshly desires and lusts. When we have the wrong view of God, everything else in our world will also have the wrong perspective.

Many people that come into the office report feeling fatigued, experience digestive difficulty or joint pain. Quite often, these symptoms improve by addressing the digestive system because assimilation of the food we eat impacts everything, from shoulder pain to menstrual cramps. However, if we continually eat a certain type of food(s) that irritates the system, it is difficult to find resolution. In order to avoid that pitfall, together we figure out which foods may be causing a problem, which can be accomplished by eliminating certain food groups for 4 to 6 weeks. Quite often, the guilty party is gluten.

Gluten is in foods such as wheat, oat, rye, soy sauce, etc., and it is what makes these foods sticky, such as bread dough and oatmeal. Gluten intolerance includes an incredibly wide variety of symptoms, including fatigue, diarrhea, alternating constipation and diarrhea, bloating, joint pain, and flaring up of pain. Reactions to gluten may be mild or severe, and Celiac disease is associated with gluten intolerance.

The Mayo Clinic’s definition: “Celiac disease as is an immune reaction to eating gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley and rye.” On the surface, Celiac disease seems very straight forward, but it is not. Running Tips To Avoid Injury

The running season is upon us and there are several tips to keep in mind to help you avoid injury and overtraining.

1. Walk- The best way to become a runner is to walk/jog. It is very common for people to automatically want to just start a running program, but the truth is, you should alternate walking with jogging to help your body adjust to the higher heart rate and the joint impact of the exercise.

2. Warm up- Make sure that you are performing a proper warm up that should include some dynamic stretching and walking prior to starting off your running workout.

3. Vary your running surfaces- Treadmills are great for indoor training, but you are keeping up with the tread instead of truly pushing off on a surface. You can improve your treadmill running if you use a 1% grade to give you more foot contact. It is good to train outdoors as well on dirt, pavement, and sidewalks. Make sure you are doing some hill climbing as well.

4. Watch your form- Make sure that your head is up and your eyes are looking forward.

Your shoulders should be relaxed. The arms and hands should stay loose and relaxed in a slight bend. Your torso should be nice and tall. Avoid leaning forward from the waist. Your hips should be pointed straight ahead and not tilted forward or backward. Your legs and feet should move quickly without pounding the ground. Use short strides and land on your heel to midfoot and push off with your ball of the foot. Your breathing should be slow and steady.

5. Take it easy- Make sure you have built-in rest days and low intensity days.

6. Keep the inspiration- Use a training log or app to help you keep track of your training.

Find a running partner that will help you stay accountable. Download some of your favorite music to help keep you fired up.

7. Eat healthy and clean and make sure to stay hydrated.

Get plenty of sleep.

8. Make sure that you crosstrain to help strengthen your core, improve flexibility, challenge your balance system and gain overall strength.

9. If your still struggling, hire a trainer that can help you achieve your goals safely.

You’ve Been Disconnected

By: Audrey Logan The other morning I was outside listening to the birds chirping, feeling the crisp cool morning air brush against my cheeks, and in awe over how amazing God is. Mulling over a Bible verse that has stuck with me for nearly 5 years now “Look at the birds of the air: they neither sow nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not of more value than they?” Matthew 6:26 (ESV). I love this verse. If God takes care of the birds that are singing His praise on this glorious morning, surely He will take care of me too. And He has, does, and will.

God put us here, on this earth, for a very specific purpose. But, many of us have been distracted by the fancy things technology has come up with. And on this very morning, I had an epiphany. The telephone.

Just think about it, before there were phones, one had to walk to the neighbors house, or write a letter to communicate. Both of these things required undivided attention. You surely could not clean your own kitchen at your neighbors house, you couldn’t vacuum your house and a write a letter either. You had to stop what you were doing so you could connect with the intended party. As the telephone progresses, the cord was originally not very long, requiring you to sit, or stand at the designated place of your telephone. You no longer have to leave your house to talk with a friend, but you did have to stay somewhat still as you did so.

Causing whatever you were doing at that moment to be put on hold so you could converse with the person on the other line.

Eventually phone cords got longer, allowing you to mingle around the room, or possibly down the hallway of where you were. This allowed for multi-tasking. A woman could talk on the phone AND cook dinner at the same time! Seems like a wonderful invention, but was it? Then we got caller ID, then phones became cordless, and then they became wireless. The evolution of phones has allowed us to become distant from those around us.

In some cases it has been a blessing, such as being able to contact family out of state, or friends oversees. But, ultimately, in our current day, the phone rings “Oh its Joe Shmoe”, tap and slide to ignore, you will get back to him later, or you simply do not want to talk to him. You are at your child’s school concert “buzz buzz” , incoming text, and you reply, and you miss a moment of your child’s life, one that you can never get back. Out to dinner with family or friends and the cell phones are lying on the table, just beckoning you to become distracted. And, guess what, it goes off and you are disconnected.

The intimacy between humans has become a foreign concept to us. The effort to have a true relationship minimally exists. Tap a flat screen with a few words and you think you are nurturing a relationship, a quick phone call and you think that is going to make a lifelong relationship. I challenge you to think otherwise.

Couples no longer know how to have deep meaningful conversations because it is an unnatural thing to do in our society because we “chat” all day, leaving nothing to talk about when we get home from a long day at work. Families are constantly disconnected because we have the “world” at our fingertips, something more important on the small breakable device in our hands.

And I can boldly say “more important”, because if you become frustrated at your child’s interruption during your very important email, if you miss what someone said because you are staring at your phone, if you are anxiously awaiting that text and you cannot connect with your immediate surroundings… well… it is proof the something you paid money for, is more important than the people in your home, and in your community, more important than something a price tag could never adhere itself too. And, this is where the defense comes in “I am talking to my friend, I am hanging out on Facebook communicating with the people I love, this has to do with work…” The defense goes on and on.

The point is… why are you making these people intangible? Why are you making a relationship only exist via some electronic device? Why are you ignoring your family for a plastic thing that cost too much money? Why are you choosing to be disconnected?

It is so much more personal to be in the presence of a friend or family member. Giving them that undivided attention that we all need and desire. It is so much more personal to sit down, with a pen and paper, and physically write a letter. To connect emotionally and put your feelings on something tangible that the other person knows took time, patience, and effort. Where the recipient of that letter knows, that was just for them, they are important to you. That they weren’t just squeezed into your busy schedule long enough to send a flippant text message.

I challenge you to notice how much time your phone, your computer, your tablet takes away from meaningful connections with those around you. I challenge you to put your phone down and not look at it for an entire evening and see how much you miss everyday because of the constant desire to see your phone light up. I challenge you to take note of the funny things, the blessings, the little moments that make life, that you would have missed if you had been on your phone in that split second. I challenge you to disconnect so you can truly connect. God takes care of the birds, and He takes care of us, but He put us here so we could take care of each other as well. Fill the needs and desires of our friends and family as we need and desire. God did not intend for us to disconnect from one another. So, reconnect, put down the electronics and really notice all that God has given you to be filled.

Frederick Breaks Ground on New Public Works Facility

The Town of Frederick announced that the ground breaking for the new Public Works facility took place Wednesday April 23rd at 4 p.m. The $2.45 million facility will be located at 7301 Eagle Boulevard in the new Eagle Business Park shown on the accompanying map and is scheduled for completion in October 2014.

The Town Board approved the process for design and construction of a new facility in 2013. The new facility will be 18,560 square feet, which will include 3,420 square feet of office space and 15,230 square feet of shop, vehicle and storage space which will be accessible by 14 garage doors bays. The office area will include men’s and women’s locker rooms, a conference room and office areas for staff. The building site will be an approximately five-acre fenced era. A Clearspan structure on the site will house materials such as IceSlicer, mulch, sand and gravel as well as liquid storage tanks for mag chloride and other liquids so that these materials can be purchased in bulk to save money. A t-shed structure will help protect exterior trailers and equipment on the back lot to extend the life of this equipment. The building will have a bulk oil dispenser system, an auto vehicle lift for maintenance, an exterior wash pad, and an air compressor system for all the vehicle bays.

The project is being paid for out of the Capital Facilities Fund, which is a special revenue fund. A special revenue fund is established by a government to collect money that must be used for a specific type of project, which in this case means the acquisition of property and equipment, the construction of public buildings, and the planning and engineering studies to implement the prior mentioned capital facilities. The Town Capital Facilities fund receives revenues from fees charged to applicants for new commercial and residential building permits. No taxes are collected as revenues in this fund.

“This much needed upgrade will help the Public Works Department serve the residents of Frederick more efficiently and effectively,” said Town Manager Matt LeCerf. “We’re excited to keep everyone informed as construction progresses on this new community asset.”

Firestone Nears Completion of New Water Meter Reading System

The Town of Firestone has nearly completed the upgrade of its meter reading system, which included the replacement of 3,417 meter reading radios. Approximately 25 meters in Historic Firestone still require replacement as they are located inside homes. These final meters will be replaced this summer. The upgrade will allow for better customer service efforts and water conservation methods.

With the upgrade to the meters complete, water customers now have the ability to set up a secure account to access their water usage through the AquaHawk website at http://firestone. aquahawk.us. The system will allow customers to access hourly readings of real time usage, as well as monitor their water usage

in an effort to prevent costly leaks and promote conservation.

The system will send water usage information to the utility billing department nonstop, while also allowing the department to alert customers of leaks in household plumbing and in unoccupied dwellings.

“This upgraded program shows how Firestone continues to serve customers with the most competitive water rates on the Front Range, while using the latest technology,” said Theo Abkes, public works director.

The project started in 2012 with the replacement of existing units. Funding for the water meter system upgrade is paid for by the water fund, which is separate from other Town funding. The water fund is the only fund designated to pay for these types of projects and upgrades to the system.

Gardner Attends Ribbon Cutting at Local Firehouse

Today, Congressman Cory Gardner (CO-04) joined Mountain View Fire Rescue at the ribbon cutting ceremony for the station’s new Rescue Pumper. The Rescue Pumper will house the tools necessary f or difficult rescues, and will serve Erie, Dacono, Del Camino, Mead and Niwot, in addition to assisting around the state as needed.

“The new Rescue Pumper at Mountain View Fire Rescue is a key part of preparation f or potential hazardous flooding from spring run-off ,” said Gardner. “This new Rescue Pumper will expand the district’s rescue capabilities in the event of any future floods. The Mountain View Fire Rescue team was crucial to rescue and recovery efforts during last September’s flooding, and I have no doubt that they will play a vital role in future rescue efforts as well. I am honored to have been able to join the men and women of Mountain View Fire Rescue today, and I thank them for their continued service and dedication to keep our families safe.”

Congressman Gardner has championed several initiatives to help communities devastated by flooding in their recovery efforts. After the flooding began, he quickly introduced and passed legislation to increase the cap on federal highway funding so Colorado could repair critical roads and bridges before winter weather could slow down construction. His request to the Internal Revenue Service that flood victims have an additional six months to claim disaster losses was granted last month. Congressman Gardner also worked with the Colorado delegation to secure two installments of disaster relief funding from the Department of Housing and Urban Development, totaling over $260 million in grants.

Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District Responds to Oil Well Fire in Frederick

At 9:10 a.m. on April 26, 2014, the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District was dispatched to a possible oil well fire located at Weld County Road 18 and Eagle Blvd. in Frederick.

Frederick-Firestone FPD arrived on scene and found a gravity oil storage tank on fire. Mountain View Fire Protection District was also dispatched to the scene.

Spotlight Convention The fire was extinguished at 9:51 a.m. There were no injuries and no hazardous material exposure. During the fire the CONGRATULATIONS to our dancers and our teachers at Spotlight Dance Cup! We are proud to announce that our groupslocal school in the vicinity was asked to shelter in place, but it has since been lifted.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time. Investigators are currently on scene. placed Ruby (2nd) awards for Pressure, Eye of the Tiger, and Good Luck (category winner). Diamond (1st) Award for Human, Diamond (1st out of 10) Overall Winner, and Slamming Style Award!

Three Imagine Firestone Odyssey Teams are Heading to World Competition in Iowa!

Imagine Charter School at Firestone has exciting news to share! Odyssey of the Mind is a wonderful program that teaches students how to use the team work and creativity skills they learn every day in a fun and challenging way. This is our students’ third year participating in the Odyssey of the Mind program, and has been our best year yet!

We had four teams of students who, with no adult or other outside assistance, solved an in-depth problem, created their own skit to demonstrate their solution and worked on how to solve spontaneous problems as a team. At the Colorado State Competition, three of our teams placed high enough to move on to the World Finals in May. This is an amazing opportunity for these creative students to meet and compete with teams from all over the world.

The Imagine Nation Inventors (top) participated in the Driver’s Test, Division 1, and placed 1st in both Regional and State competitions.

The team designed, built, and drove a vehicle that traveled a course at least two times while a “student driver” attempted to complete tasks in order to pass a driver’s test. The vehicle traveled using one propulsion system and then traveled in reverse using a different propulsion system by means of stored human energy. Their performance can be seen at: The Imagineer Munchkins (middle) participated in the Stackable Structure, Division 1, and placed 2nd in both Regional and State. The team designed and built a structure made up of three separate components stacked on top of one another.

The structure components were made of only balsa wood and glue, and were tested by balancing and supporting weights.

The team’s structure held 135 lbs.

Their performance included the stacking of the components, placement of the weights, and an artistic representation Earth.

The Ozone Playas (bottom) participated in Seeing is Believing, Division 2, and placed 1st in both Regional and State competitions. The team’s original script and performance places them in the clouds: They are Cloud People. When their Home in the Clouds is threatened by pollution from the world below, they have to invent a vehicle that will transport them down to find a solution to this potential catastrophe. The performance also includes rhymes, singing, and a moving set piece.

All the teams’ performances can be viewed on the Imagine Firestone website: www. imaginefirestone.org Odyssey of the Mind teaches students valuable skills that will help them become exemplary employees in the future. There are few extracurricular activities that, among other things: • Teach students how to work in teams so they learn cooperation and respect for others • Give students the opportunity to evaluate ideas and make decisions on their own • Require students to work within a budget and manage money • Inspire students to look for more than one way to solve a problem The registration cost for each student and coach for lodging and tournament fees is $531, for a total of near $5,000 per team, and does not include travel to Ames, Iowa. The school is collecting tax deductible donations and/or sponsorships to help cover the teams’ registration and travel expenses.

By Peggy Blewett Jane Beech would like to welcome you all to Beech House Preschool. Jane has her Bachelors of Arts in Elementary Education with endorsements in Cultural Diversity and Middle School. She taught school for eight years prior to staying at home with her two daughters. Jane has taught both at the intermediate and primary grade levels, including kindergarten. She knows how to help preschoolers prepare for kindergarten.

Jane was eager to return to the education field, and wanted to assist students in preparing and building a foundation for their future education. Jane decided to go into business for herself and Beech House Preschool was born, she opened its doors in August of 2013 and will be completing her first school year.

Beech House Preschool is a licensed, home-based, morning/part-time preschool for children three (toilet trained) to kindergarten. It provides a family-based atmosphere with a low teacher to student ratio. Jane provides an environment that is safe, fun, and promotes the curiosity and creativity of each child. Children are engaged in age appropriate curriculum activities to help them develop socially, emotionally, physically, and academically. Beech House Preschool wants children to enjoy learning, and have the freedom to explore their curiosities without reservations.

Jane’s curriculum lessons and activities emphasize letter recognition, letter sounds, basic number concepts, counting, fine and gross motor skills, problem solving, and science.

Introduction to basic Spanish vocabulary is incorporated. Field trips and yoga classes are also included throughout the year.

Jane feels that Early Childhood Education is essential for future growth. Research shows that brain development in children is ongoing, but greatest before the age five. Approximately 85% of intellectual, emotional, and cognitive ability is formed by kindergarten. Children who attend preschool will benefit more in those areas, which will carry on throughout their educational years.

Jane looks forward to working with your child and watching them grow. She loves to see the “a-ha” moments when children learn something new and apply it to their daily lives and experiences. They laugh often and Jane enjoys planning fun activities for them to enjoy daily. Jane does this by attending educational classes relating to early childhood education which keeps her up to date with all the latest studies to help your children reach their dreams.

Jane also coached girls’ basketball, girls’ volleyball, cross country, and track at the middle school level. She enjoys spending time with her husband and two daughters, traveling, reading, watching movies, playing golf and basketball, and making jewelry.

The Weld County Senior Nutrition Program serves hot, nutritious meals to seniors 60+ at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center located at 701 Fifth St, Fredrick.

All food is provided by UNC in Greeley Colorado each Thursday at 12:00 pm.

Seniors 60+ and their spouses are eligible, as are persons who reside in subsidized housing complex’s that provide meal site nutrition programs. A small donation of $3 is suggested, but certainly not required. Check us out. It is a lot of fun!

To make or cancel a reservation, please call 303-833-3660 by 11am prior to Wednesday the week of lunch. If you do not have a reservation, please drop in and we will see if we can fit you in as a walk-in.

The Frederick Wrestling Club has amazing, dedicated coaches. Layne Latoski (above) with Frederick Wrestling Club medaled in 17 tournaments placing 1st-4th place. He received 4 First Place trophies, placed in 2 State tournaments, as well as placing in a National Tournament receiving All American Status this year for the 20132014 wrestling season. Layne also received the MVP award through the Frederick Wrestling Club. Firestone Awards Contract for Pavement Condition Survey

To inventory the current condition of streets in Firestone, the Firestone Board of Trustees awarded a contract to Infrastructure Management Services at its March 26, 2014, meeting to conduct an intensive pavement condition survey this year. The survey will provide critical data, accelerated results and significant cost savings for street rehabilitation.

The survey will be conducted in May and will gather all information from every street within Town within a few days. Information gathered will be done using a laser to perform a surface condition assessment of all streets. Eleven laser sensors will look at pavement cracking, texture, rutting, roughness, grade and more to determine the condition. In addition, the lasers will use GPS technology to locate and inventory all roadway signs. Deflection testing will also be done to determine the sub grade of the materials under the roadways. The results will allow the Town to rank and prioritize street rehabilitation with scientific data.

Town staff will utilize the condition survey throughout the next several budget processes to direct funding to make repairs to streets. The street and park dedicated tax increase, which was passed by voters in November 2013, will provide the allocated money to conduct the condition survey and fund street projects moving forward.

The Firestone Board of Trustees believes it will be instrumental for the Town to conduct this survey every three to five years to reevaluate the condition of the streets.

With the implementation of new curriculum standards in Colorado for the upcoming school year, we believe that Imagine is positioned for a smooth transition. Kindergarten In both our half-day and full-day kindergarten option, students are provided with engaging learning opportunities.

Students learn phonemic awareness, decoding and encoding and important reading comprehension strategies to help them grow as readers and writers.

To enhance their number sense and math problem solving, they work on patterns and classification, money, beginning computation strategies, measurement, and geometry.

Students also have the opportunity to study plants, animals, the human body, seasons and weather, an overview of the seven continents, Christopher Columbus’ journey, the pilgrims, and Independence Day. Our full-day kindergarten students have gotten the opportunity to sing the national anthem at a sports game, participate in service learning projects about recycling, and learn about famous artists and their masterpieces and then recreate these masterpieces on their own.

First Grade Students in first grade also get opportunities to grow and learn in both important core subjects and in character.

First grade students expand on their reading skills. They continue to work on phonemic awareness, decoding, word recognition, and oral reading skills. They also focus on comprehension skills that are important to be able to process the fiction and non-fiction stories they read. Teachers carry these strategies into writing, helping students to grow as budding authors.

Mathematics understanding expands in first grade.

Students focus on numbers and number sense, money, adding and subtracting, measurement, and geometry.

Students love continuing their studies in social studies and science. They learn about Mesopotamia, ancient Egypt, the Maya, Inca, and Aztec civilizations, English settlers, the American Revolution, and the modern civilization and culture of Mexico. In science they learn about habitats, oceans and undersea life, animal classification, germs and preventing illnesses, the human body, matter, electricity, and astronomy.

Second Grade Second grade students continue to grow in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies as well as character.

Second graders at Imagine love their studies in social studies and science. They have the opportunity to learn about Asia, India, and China, ancient Greece, the Constitution, the War of 1812, westward expansion, the Civil War, immigration, and civil rights. In science, students study life cycles, the water cycle, insects, the digestive and excretory system, and magnetism.

As a K-8 school, our learning adventures do not end in grade 2. In fact, the Core TH Knowledge sequence spirals ANNUAL nicely right through 8th grade.

But the foundation is laid in these lower elementary years.

Daniel Michael Jones Memorial Foundation Charity Golf Tournament

The Daniel Michael Jones Memorial Foundation annual golf tournament will be held at the Bella Rosa Golf Course at 5830 Bella Rosa Parkway in Frederick, Colorado on June 8th 2014. Teams and sponsors are needed for this event and the public is encouraged to attend.

Golfers and sponsors who participate in the tournament will get the satisfaction of helping a charitable organization, the Daniel Michael Jones Memorial Foundation.

The foundation provides scholarships in the name of Daniel Michael Jones at the University

Judie Marie Buxton

November 1, 1945 ~ March 23, 2014

Judie Marie Buxton of Mead, Colorado died March 23,2014 at the age of 68. She was born November 1, 1945 in Oakland, California to Walter and Mildred (Dunham ) Primmer.

She was raised in Santa Clara and, Lancaster, California.

Judie attended San Diego State College where she was an education major. She married Robert A. Buxton April 27, 1968. Judie worked at Quartz Hill High School near Lancaster before the family moved to England to live for four years. Upon returning to the U.S. in 1984 the family settled in Longmont, Colorado where Judie began her 18 years of service with St. Vrain Valley School District at Skyline High School in Longmont. Judie took 2 years off to help raise her new grandson, she later worked at Dawson school in Lafayette, Colorado for 10 years.

Judie is survived by her husband, her father, brother , two sons, one daughter, one daughter-in-law, two grandchildren, her mother-in-law, two brothers-in-law, one sister-in-law, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. She was preceded in death by her mother and one brother. Judie’s great joy in life was the successes of her children and grandchildren, they were her pride and joy.

Karen Smith

January 7, 1943 ~ March 30, 2014

Karen Smith, 60, of Johnstown, died March 30, 2014 at Medial Center of the Rockies, Loveland.

Karen was born on January 7, 1954 in Longmont, to Danny Hancock and Marian Dyer Hancock.

She graduated from Longmont High School in 1972. Karen worked for many years as a cook at the A&W Drive In. Following that she worked for a number of wire assembly positions, including Trend Manufacturing, Sherwood Enterprises and Ball Engineering.

While Karen didn’t have children, she was a most involved and exceptional aunt. She adored her nieces and nephews and was big part of their lives. On February 27, 1997 she married Kent Smith in Longmont.

Preceding her in death are her mother and sisters Rhonda Calhoun and Jody Carl.

Surviving are her husband of Johnstown; father and step mother Danny (Doris) Hancock of Laramie, Wyoming; sister Pam (Brian) Kosher of Madison, Minnesota and numerous nieces and nephews.

Services were held April 4 at Carroll Lewellen Funeral Chapel.

Mary Beauprez

February 20, 1911 ~ April 8, 2014

Mary Beauprez died at Applewood Living Center April 9, 2014. She was 103 years old.

Born, February 20, 1911, at home in Mead, CO. to Ernest and Leontine Cnockaert, she was the daughter of immigrants from Langemark, Belgium. After working for some time in Colorado coal mines, the family moved to the farm homestead near Stoneham, CO. Here Mary spent her early years.

She remembered, with fondness, the horse and buggy trips to and from grade school.

Determined to complete high school, she rode horseback to get there until later when riding the school bus became an option. As at-home obligations became more demanding, she, with the cooperation and encouragement of her high school instructor, satisfied curriculum requirements via correspondence. She took great pride in achieving her diploma. After graduation she moved to the Boulder area where she worked as a live-in maid.

She married Julius Beauprez, November 11, 1933. Together they worked rented farmland until they eventually purchased their own 360 acres north of Longmont on Highway 66. The couple tended the irrigated acreage; raised poultry and marketed eggs; raised and sold Herefords; and, kept a dairy herd as well. They eventually designed and built a brick home on the property. Here they lived and maintained their life until they retired from farm living and moved to the “city” (Longmont).

In her younger years, Mrs. Beauprez enjoyed sewing, needlework, crocheting and quilting. She entered competitions and won many awards, particularly for her baking. She, as well, had a particular fondness for roses and excelled in raising them.

Mrs. Beauprez took several memorable trips in her lifetime. She and her husband traveled to Europe to visit their daughter, Patricia Craven (their only child) and her family in their home in Paris, France. From there Mr. and Mrs. Beauprez made a journey through the historical “Old Country.” They looked up relatives as they toured Belgium, the homeland of both their ancestors. Other travels included trips throughout the U.S. mainland and two excursions to the Hawaiian Islands.

Her parents, husband, and, sisters preceded her in death. Her daughter (Patricia Beauprez Craven), three grandchildren, eight great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild survive her.

She will be remembered as a loving wife, devoted mother, loyal friend, and, a highly respected mentor and family matriarch. Share your condolences at howemortuary.com.

Harold Lee Headrick

July 18, 1928~April 15, 2014

Harold Lee Headrick was born in Cheraw, Colorado on July 18, 1928. He grew up on the farm with his 8 siblings. He learned to work hard and he was always a farmer at heart.

He earned both a bachelor's and master's degree from the University of Northern Colorado.

Harold taught industrial arts in Jefferson County for 25 years and was a talented woodworker.

After he retired, he moved to Conifer where he enjoyed the mountain weather, open space and gardening. He was a member of Friendship Force for many years and enjoyed the adventures of traveling, meeting new people, and learning about different cultures. Harold has three children: Lynn (Kip), Craig (Janelle), Kurt (Donna) and his adopted daughter, Keep. He has six grandchildren of whom he was very proud: Hilary, Grant, Connor, Logan, Kyra, and Brandon.

Family was very important to him and he enjoyed the times we spent together. Harold passed away on April 15, 2014. He was a man dedicated to hard work, high values, and being a productive member of society.

He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, and his values and teachings will be carried on through all of us.

Soil Testing Helps Firestone Treat Parks

As spring creeps up on us all, the Firestone Public Works department has been busy prepping parks and trails for the season. This year, part of that preparation included a set of soil testing conducted by the Colorado State University Extension at various parks and ball fields.

Soil testing helps provide valuable data to the Public Works team in applying the proper application of fertilizer, while taking advantage of the nutrients present in the soil to promote growth in the parks. The testing data will also help the Town in purchasing only needed materials to promote healthy growth, resulting in a cost savings from purchasing unneeded products.

The soil testing specifically looked at levels for the following: pH; electrical conductivity or salts; lime; texture; sodium absorption ratio; organic material; plant type; nitrate; phosphorus; potassium; zinc; iron; manganese; copper; boron; and gypsum.

Dick Sherwin

October 3, 1942-April 6, 2014

Richard “Dick” Sherwin, of Longmont, died April 6, 2014. He was 71.

Dick was born on October 3, 1942 in Lancaster, Wisconsin to Guerdon Sherwin and Jeanette Lee Sherwin.

Dick married Nancy Smith on January 24, 1962, in Platteville, Wisconsin.

Dick graduated from Platteville High School, and later attended Platteville College, studying finance, finished school and in the process of interviewing for banking jobs, found Longmont, Colorado He joined St. Vrain Valley Bank, later United Banks, as a commercial lender. Inspired, he joined the real estate business at an exciting time in Longmont. Growing and a housing market that needed direction, he joined The Hearth Real Estate firm, as a realtor. More recently he was an agent with Traditions ReMax Group. He would spend the next 40 years, providing expertise on residential and commercial real estate sales.

Dick enjoyed Longmont and took an active interest in the community. He was a charter member of Fox Hill Country Club, which included soliciting memberships. He was also involved with the beginning of the first fundraising golf tournament in Longmont, held to recognize and solicit funds for the American Cancer Society. This event captured the imagination of Longmont and turned out to be a premier event.

Dick was a member of the First United Methodist Church. He had many interests, but enjoyed four wheeling and was a member of the Mile High Jeep Club for many years. He will forever be known for being an early owner of a Porsche in Longmont, something he cherished and fully enjoyed.

Surviving are his wife Nancy of Longmont; his mother Jeanette of Platteville, Wisconsin; two sons Tim Sherwin of Longmont and Rob (Anna) Sherwin of Evans, Colorado; grandson Nick Sherwin of Longmont; two brothers Jerry (Elaine) Sherwin of Cuba City, Wisconsin and Ken (Marge) Sherwin of Richland Center, Wisconsin and brother-in-law James E. (Nancy) Smith of Morrison, CO and several nieces and nephews.

Services were held April 24, at the First United Methodist Church in Longmont.

Trinity Ladies Auxiliary Box Lunch Social

By Chris Baca St Theresa’s Trinity Ladies Auxiliary is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting the Knight of Columbus Council #13559 from Frederick, CO. They also support St. Theresa’s Catholic Church by providing gifts for the children of the parish who are receiving their Sacraments and hosting the receptions for these Sacramental functions. In order to do this, they organize various fund raisers which include an annual Lady’s Tea & Fashion Show, a Sweetheart Brunch, and for the first time, a Box Lunch Social.

The Box Lunch Social will be held on June 8th from 11:00 am-1:30 pm at St Theresa’s Parish Hall located across the street from the church at 436 5th St, in Frederick Colorado. You are invited to eat at the hall, or feel free to take your lunch with you. There will be seating inside or you can opt to bring a blanket and join us for a picnic on the grassy area.

Box Lunches must be ordered ahead of time and the cost for the box lunch is $10.00 to be paid for at the time of order. Lunch includes: a sub sandwich, chips, pickle, fruit, cookie, and a beverage. Auxiliary members will be on hand to take your orders on Saturday, May 24th & May 31st between 7:00 pm and 8:00 pm and on Sunday May 25th & June 1st you can place your orders between 11:30 am-12:30 pm, 1:30- 2:30 pm and 6:00- 7:00 pm.

This event is open to all members of the parish and to the public community. Please help us make this event a successful one!
