Handcrafted by Aunt B ZZZZ—Christmas is Less Than 60 Days Away!! By Brenda Glantz Schmidt

“Upcycling” and “Repurposing” became my passion when helping my late niece, Jamie Glantz, prepare for several holiday markets in 2017. Jamie loved constructing and I loved painting. We were a great team After doing several shows and markets we decided to set up our businesses individually in small shops and markets in the area. During those days of taking our creations to various markets and shows, we fortunately met a wonderful businesswoman, Caroline Johnson. Caroline asked us to join her in the new business she was creating. Her vision: a boutique style marketplace with a few vendors carrying a variety of locally handcrafted items, painted furniture, home goods, and classes, all in an inviting friendly open space. That was a game changer for Jamie and me. Finally, we were able to focus on creating beautiful, usable projects and decorations without worrying about how to sell them. We had found our people! And our clients, who are redecorating, have a new home, or need a gift, come from all over the Front Range because of the unique, quality

items at the Bee & Th istle Marketshops. As an added bonus, I had recently become a Fusion Mineral Paint distributor and was looking for a place to sell it. It’s an all-in-one professional paint for the everyday DIYer. It’s non-toxic, for interior and exterior projects. I love everything about Fusion Mineral Paint and keep it in stock for others to experience. It’s rewarding to provide services and products that help others. I come from a large family with deep roots. We were raised to do our best in all areas including helping others. My career choice is incredibly satisfying. Many people don’t realize the process of upcycling or refurbishing takes a lot of time. The first step is searching for quality, unique furniture pieces. Sometimes people call me because they want to sell some furniture. All of my pieces must be well made to start with. I might need to repair a portion of the piece which adds to

the length of time to finish the project. I restore and paint from my home every day. From start to finish, the process fills my heart with joy. One favorite aspect of my business is helping people update furniture that has some meaning for them. Something passed down from their grandma or from their childhood is especially exciting. Bringing it up from the basement, cleaning it, making it current and useful. I love laying on the first brush stroke of paint on an outdated but solidly built piece of furniture and transforming it into a current piece that will happily live in someone’s home for years to come! Then it gets passed on to someone else to treasure for even more years. I have much knowledge to share with people new to furniture painting. I learn something new on nearly every piece of furniture I restore. As mentioned, I grew my business with my niece, Jamie Glantz. I chose my business name because I always signed my name as Aunt B when corresponding with her. I miss Jamie and her vibrant

personality. One of my most precious memories is working on a project for a fundraiser. Jamie and I refurbished a coffee bar for an auction to benefit the families of Mark Martinez and Joey Irwin. A bittersweet memory. I grew up on a farm west of Frederick, attended school there and graduated from Erie High School. I still have strong family ties to the Carbon Valley. My brothers, Dan and Barry live there. Frederick is my hometown! Christmas transformation at the Bee & Thistle Marketshops took place last week. Normally considered late in the retail world but our clients love that we don’t jump the gun on the holidays. But don’t wait too long to get over to the shops as the furniture, decorations, and other products go fast! Christmas is Less Than 60 Days Away!! Get to the Bee & Thistle Marketshops at 43 N Main Street in Brighton CO (52 east to Hwy 85, take Brighton round-about). Check out Aunt B ZZZZ at www.facebook. com/auntbzzzz. or call the store at 303.653.5591 for info. REMINDER: Call Brenda if you have a project you’d like her help with or a piece of furniture you’d like to sell!

What's OnMy Mind Kelly Martindale, Publisher

D

Yes He Can

eath surrounds me. My mind cannot comprehend what is happening in real-time, before my eyes…in my own neighborhood, to my own friends. It’s too close. Again. I’m afraid. Afraid for what is next. Afraid of how I will survive this and for those around me and their pain. Pain of heart is everywhere. Terror fills the mind and controls, restrains, and squeezes the life out of the living. Only God can comfort the tortured lives of the bereaved, the crippled, those filled with disease and fear. Then I’m reminded…look up. I need to remember there is more to come. Not just sorrow and injury. But also joy in the morning, worship from the grieving heart, daily miracles, and trust. There is much more to come. Plus, the greatest gift—hope. Invisible yet palpable. I will see them again. We will see them

again. I still believe for it. Believe for it! Remember…. The grave is empty. Like Lazarus, I’ve been raised up with Jesus. I no longer fear the tomb or the lies I’ve been buried under. Prepare for celebrating Jesus no matter when He was born. His love for us matters more than the calendar. It’s a daily journey. Some days, a very long, hard journey. So, join me. Time will pass more quickly, together. Trust me. We need each other. Stop fighting each other. Our differences won’t matter in the end or the beginning. Depends on perspective. No matter the color, every person is precious in the Creator’s sight. He has the whole world in His hands. The chaos is under control. Work together under God’s guidance. He sustains. Jesus revives. Watch and believe.

But I tell you who hear me: Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you. - Luke 6:27-28

6 Inspiring Questions to Ask Before Writing Your Social Media Content

S

ocial media marketing is an important tool to promote your products and services, but developing content is not easy. I encourage my clients to ask 6 questions before writing their social media content so they’ll always have a compelling message. What do I want my followers to remember about the post? Content that doesn’t make a point will frustrate your target audience. It shows them that you have nothing meaningful to share and that reading your posts is not worth their time. Instead, when you give them something to remember, they’ll come back and engage with your posts time and again. How can I help my followers overcome a problem? By showing your followers that you understand the problem they face and that you have a plan to help them, you’ll develop loyalty and trust. Your posts will draw them into a story of their own success. Use your social media content to show them that you’re here to help. How can I empathize with my followers and share my credibility? To guide your followers to the transformation they desire, you’ll need to show them you care. Help them see that you understand what they’re going through and that you feel their pain. Consider sharing a short personal story and mention your experience. This will convey your expertise and make you a credible source of help. To discover the remaining 3 questions, visit

his is a fair and honest question many people have. You work hard (when you have a job), and you can’t seem to escape the paycheck-to-paycheck existence. You want more. Not a lot more, maybe, but enough cushion so you can breathe a bit. You’d like to be able to buy groceries without having to keep a running tally in your head so that you don’t overspend. You’d like to be able to just buy what you need without having to decide, “This week I’ll buy toothpaste and next week I’ll buy light bulbs.” Decisions on how we’re going to spread our thin layer of money around are a daily crisis for all too many of us. So, what to do? Know one thing about yourself and your relationship with money. It is very emotional. Unless you deal with the emotional issues you have regarding money, you’ll never travel too far from the paycheck-to-paycheck existence. That is not what I want for you. I want you to have a healthy relationship with money.

This habit allows you to handle cash and talk about money without losing control of your calm. How do you do this? Let go of the guilt you carry for the past financial mistakes you have made. Face the fact that not a single wealthy person has ever managed their finances without making some mistake. Many have lost huge sums of cash, but still managed to garner wealth. They did so by knowing, deep down, that mistakes are part of their education in

money management. Find a book today on personal finance and read the advice. Then, implement any “wisdom” that applies to your situation. There are many excellent books out there but the one that I like best regarding automating your finances is David Bach’s, The Automatic Millionaire. This book has helped over 65% of my clients streamline their financial lives, even though they were all starting from scratch. Hi, Frederick! Happy

November! z Would you please join me in celebrating the addition of Via Mobility Services to Frederick? Via is a free transportation service for Frederick seniors (age 60 or better) and people with special abilities. Vía provides services in the community for individuals who are unable to drive due to age, health, disability, or income. Via’s mission is to promote independence and selfsufficiency for people with limited mobility by providing caring, customer-focused transportation options. significant sidewalk connections, improved drainage, medians, and a traffic signal. This intersection is the key gateway to our town. Growing traffic impacts and safety concerns have made this a priority project for 2022. z Reliable Infrastructure: The 3rd Street Reconstruction Project is on track to be completed ahead of schedule. Road work has advanced north of WRC 36 to Willow Drive and paving operations began in mid-October. The total reconstruction of 3rd Street will rebuild the two-lane road from WCR 34.5 to the north Town limits. The project also includes approximately 1,700 feet of concrete curb, gutter, and sidewalk on the east side between CR 34.5 and the Highlands subdivision. z Public Safety: Mead Police Department recently promoted Officer Scott Holmen to the position of Sergeant. Sergeant Holmen has been with our department for the last year and competed for the sergeant position along with several other candidates. Sergeant Holmen has extensive knowledge and

experience in public safety, and we are excited to have promoted an internal candidate to this essential position. z Fiscal Stability: The Board of Trustees voted unanimously to pass a resolution supporting the 1% sales and use tax increase to fund street maintenance. If Ballot Issue 2D is passed by voters on November 2, the Town’s sales and use tax would increase from 2% to 3%. All new revenue generated would be retained in a segregated account, dedicated exclusively to street maintenance, and would not go into the general fund. z Connected Community: Mead’s Christmas in the Park event is scheduled for Saturday, December 4. Mark your calendars for a day of holiday celebration, including our annual Christmas Parade and Tree Lighting Ceremony. For more information subscribe to our monthly Mead Messenger and email notifications: https://bit.ly/2St4Ye7. If you are new to Mead, check out our Resident Information webpage!

z Frederick is partnering with FHS Student Council, Carbon Valley Help Center, Rocky Mountain Christian Church, and the Weld Food Bank to provide Thanksgiving dinner to those in need. Our goal is to donate a dinner (Turkey & all the fixins’) to 100 families in need in the Carbon Valley. How can you help? Nominate a family in need, drop off specific food items from the list (on our website), or donate money for pumpkin pies. New for 2021: drop off donations at the Back 9 Restaurant at Bella Rosa Golf Course (5830 Bella Rosa Parkway) and get a coupon for 10% off your entire bill. z We all know winter weather can be sudden and unexpected in Colorado. The Town of Frederick PWD maintains approximately 104 miles of public streets (220 lane miles) and over 18 miles of trails and sidewalks. As the Town grows, more roads are added, increasing the overall street maintenance workload carried by Public Works. To keep up with growth and keep streets safe and ready for emergency personnel during and after storms producing snow and ice, the Town has adopted a tiered approach to snow control. This plan will prioritize and identify primary routes (Tier 1) and secondary routes (Tier 2) as designated roads to be plowed due to snow accumulation and

icy conditions. All other residential streets (Tier 3) will only be plowed after snowstorms that produce over eight inches of snow within one 24-hour period. We are moving in this direction to focus on emergency routes, major arterials, and main subdivision routes (the in and out route of a neighborhood) to provide our emergency personnel with safe routes that will ultimately increase the wellbeing of our residents. You can use the online map at FrederickCO.gov/Snow to see every street’s designation. z While it is not my place or position to tell you how to vote or even to advocate for one ideal or another, I would like to take this opportunity to share my appreciation for the continued partnership of the Carbon Valley Parks and Recreation District. Healthy activities to help us all remain active as a multigenerational community and connect on “play,” and improve our physical, mental, and social wellbeing are vital components to our quality of life. CVPRD has been a part of the Frederick community since the 1980s, and year after year, I see and feel their support of a strong, vibrant, and healthy community. Thank you to their team for valuing our partnership and allowing Frederick to be grateful hosts to their connection over the years.

Hello Friends and Neighbors,

O

ctober is always an exciting time here at the Fire District. For those who may not know, October marks a time when we get to talk to local students and community members about fire prevention and safety in the home. While this is an important subject that needs to be discussed and thought about all year long, Fire Prevention Week, which was October 3-9, 2021, gives the FrederickFirestone Fire District an opportunity to make it a priority within the community. A

question that comes up often is, “why is Fire Prevention Week in October?” The history behind Fire Prevention Week and why it is observed in October is to commemorate the Great Chicago Fire, which began on October 8, 1871, and caused devastating damage. More than 250 people were killed, 100,000 were left homeless, more than 17,400 structures were destroyed, and over 2,000 acres of land burned. Therefore, Fire Prevention Week is always observed during the week of October 9th. This year an Open House at Station 3 on Saturday, Oct. 2nd, in Firestone, kicked off Fire Prevention Week. Community members were invited to our station to not only talk about fire safety and prevention, but to take a tour through the Fire Safety House to better understand why a home escape plan is needed, see the station’s fire engines and trucks, chat with local firefighters, and even learn what it feels like to use a fire hose. (NFPA) sponsors Fire Prevention Week with a campaign that fire departments can use when talking about fire safety and prevention. This year’s theme was “Learn the Sounds of Fire Safety,” which focused on understanding what the different sounds of smoke and carbon monoxide alarms make and what each sound means. While there are many fun resources and activities on the District’s website, www.fffd.us, that can help identify these sounds, it can be even more fun doing it in person. This is why several groups made it a point to come to the stations and discuss fire safety with us. Hopefully, next year we will have the chance to be back in the schools talking to kids about fire prevention and safety. To help individuals and families get started on a path of fire safety, below are a couple of tips: • Make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms in your home. Check these alarms monthly, change your batteries every 6 months when you change your clocks, and replace your

alarms every 10 years or according to the timeline laid out by the manufacturer. • Always make sure you have two ways out of your home and have a safe meeting spot. This should be a part of your home escape plan, and make sure you practice the plan! For home escape planning tools, please visit www.nfpa.org<http://www. nfpa.org> and go to Public Education. • Reach out to the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District with any questions or concerns.

As always thank you for your support during the month of October and we appreciate getting to meet and chat with so many of you. The District’s next big event will be the Santa Run in December. Please stay tuned for more details; routes and maps should be posted to the website in November. Thank you and please stay safe, Summer Campos Community Outreach Specialist Frederick-Firestone Fire District

Your Life Story

W

hat has shaped your life? When I started Your Life Story in April, I understood that because this was a new business, there would be a lot of learning as I went along. I planned to have six sessions with each person and wrote out tons of questions for each session that would help prompt memories and discussion. After I’d completed the first few stories, though, I came up with a different strategy. Now I begin with asking the person to think about three things that have happened in their life that have shaped them the most. Often, they are really hard things – because hardship produces growth. Even if I asked 300 questions, I might not get to what THEY felt was most important in their life. So now I start there, and then we can go back to the other questions. When I’m listening and writing and capturing/ preserving someone’s story, I feel like I’m doing something that will last and have impact. I’m curious. What three things would you say have shaped your life most? If you’re interested in preserving your story, call me! Are you interested in learning more about Your Life Story? Visit www.JenniePoppenger.com. I’m passionate about helping people preserve their important memories! 303.518.0089 or emailto: facetoface@q.com.

1031 Exchanges

Y

ou may have heard of someone doing a “1031 exchange” or “Like Kind exchange” on an investment property. 1031 refers to the section of the IRS code that allows for a tax deferred exchange of investment real estate. A tax deferred exchange is a method by which a property owner trades one property for another without having to pay capital gains tax on the transaction. It does not eliminate the gain, but it defers the gain until a future time. There are very specific rules to be followed, so care must be taken to preserve the exchange. 1031 exchanges are beneficial because you don’t actually have to find someone with a property you want to trade it for yours. Basically, you sell your investment property with a qualified intermediary holding the funds, and then you purchase another property, within a specific time period. You can also do the exchange with one property into more than one or sell more than one and exchange for one. There is even a process for a “reverse exchange” in which the replacement property is purchased prior to the sale of the current property. The exchange must be set up prior to the sale of your investment property and you cannot touch the proceeds. There are several intermediary companies to choose from that handle the exchange. The cost usually runs about $1500 to $2500 depending on the number of properties but can be well worth the savings in current taxes. The property being purchased just has to be real estate. One property can be exchanged for more than one. A house can be exchanged for vacant land or a condo, and the property doesn’t even have to be in the same State. You just have to exchange real estate for real estate, not personal property. The property you acquire must be a new investment property, so not a property for you to live in. You cannot take the money and pay down a loan on a property you already own or buy a property to live in. As with any investment or tax strategy, you should consult professionals in the field to make sure you understand the transaction and the advantages or disadvantages you may have.

A No Hassle Holiday Decoration Rental Service Is Finally Here!

W

e are happy to announce the launch of Yardables, a fullservice inflatable decoration rental company. You pick your inflatables and rental dates on our website and we take care of the rest. We deliver them, set them up (including extension cords and a timer) and pick them up when your rental period is over. Want decorations for every holiday but don’t want to store them, repair them or set them up? That’s where we come in! We have inflatable decoration packages for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and even Birthdays. The best part is…you can pick new decorations every year instead of being stuck with putting up the same ones each year. Yardables is a parent owned, local small business and the only inflatable decoration rental company in Colorado. Many companies rent bounce houses or put up Christmas lights but no one provides the rental service for inflatable decorations that we do. We live and breathe inflatables so we are experts at setting them up and maintaining them. Let us handle your decorations this year and fill your lawn with inflatables. For our Birthday options https://

yardablesusa.com/shop/birthday/

We have various cakes and cupcakes for $10-$15 per day with a 3 day minimum. We also have a Cinderella or a Buzz Lightyear inflatable add-on. If you are interested in a specific character or timeframe that you don’t see on the website, please let me know! Contact Information: Heidi Schaer, yardablesusa@gmail.com or 720-597-0766.

Robert, you are the best son, brother, uncle, grandson, nephew, cousin, and friend that anybody could ever have. All of us, in your sphere, are so blessed to know you. We appreciate your loyalty, humor, diplomacy, intelligence, creativity, encouragement, and all the other great attributes that you share with us. If you weren’t my son, I’d still want to hang out with you. Thanks for letting me hang out with you! I know I speak for several others in expressing that we hope you have a wonderful birthday on November 14 and that the next 12 months are the best yet. You are so loved Robert.

Totally

Growing & Grand Opening

Y

ou’ve maybe heard the phrase “That building has good bones.” It means you have something to work with. This was our feeling as we at Carbon Valley Lutheran bought the former Rooted Nursery. The property had appeal; but what to do with a steel structure that was used for growing plants? Rather than recycle the steel and sending the rest to the landfill, we decided to repurpose it. And so, a former plant nursery once used for growing plants will now grow faith at Carbon Valley Lutheran. In addition, it will serve as a place to help kids grow and develop through Busy Bee Preschool and Early Learning Center. The campus will house both CVL and Busy Bee, maximizing its usage and benefit for the community. Two businesses; one campus for the good of Carbon Valley. We’ve created a campus which is

open, safe, relational and beautiful. A church where you will find Biblical depth and relational connection to others just like you. A preschool which is safe, clean and tailor made for infants and children. An outdoor covered patio where you can enjoy a hot coffee from Ziggis next door or pull up a chair around the gas firepit. Artificial turf for year-round activities in our beautiful Colorado weather and three age-appropriate playgrounds for the kids. Carbon Valley Lutheran will re-launch worship services in November, Sunday mornings at 9am. Worship includes a fully staffed nursery for the littles ages 0-2 and Carbon Kids for ages pre-K-6th grade. We are so excited to teach the next generation about Christ. Busy Bee Preschool & Early Learning Center is open now. If you’re new to Carbon Valley and looking for a church, if you’re just curious

about the basics of Christianity or you’re looking for greater relational connection, we’d love to have you stop in for a visit. Check our website, Facebook, or Instagram for specifics on dates and

events. Carbon Valley Lutheran Church –

New Weld County COVID Dashboard

T

he Weld County Health Department has added several new features to its COVID-19 dashboards. A new “Breakthrough Case” tab on the Data Dashboard shows a comparison of fully vaccinated versus unvaccinated cases in the ages 12(+) category for Weld County residents. Data released October 1, 2021, shows that of the over 157,000 fully vaccinated residents, 1,434 residents have developed COVID-19 since January 1, 2021, representing 0.9% of all fully vaccinated people in Weld County. Although there have been over 1,400 breakthrough cases — meaning people who were fully vaccinated but still got COVID-19 — only 87 breakthrough cases were hospitalized (0.06% of the fully vaccinated population). As of September 17, 2021, the rate of unvaccinated people getting COVID-19 in Weld County is nearly five times higher than the fully vaccinated population. The Health Department also has added a new Zip Code Map to its Vaccine Dashboard. The map shows vaccination rates by zip codes, along with rates by age group and race/ ethnicity. The countywide rate of residents age 12+ with one or more doses of a COVID-19 vaccine is 64.2%, or over 173,000 residents, as of October 1, 2021. Weld County health officials continue to encourage residents to get the COVID-19 vaccine. “We have plenty of vaccines available,” said Mark Lawley, Executive Director of the Weld County Health Department. “The quickest way to end this pandemic is for more people to get vaccinated.”

North Range Behavioral Health searching for property management partner to manage their Harmony Way Permanent Housing Project

A

s affordable housing continues to be a growing challenge in our community, North Range Behavioral Health’s Harmony Way Permanent Housing Project helps individuals living with mental illness and experiencing chronic homelessness transition into community living. Harmony Way is community of 18 one-bedroom apartments that provides housing for 18 residents. A resident’s length of stay is determined by individual need, with some living at Harmony Way since the building was bought by North Range in 2004. The average resident stay is between 2 and 5 years. “Harmony Way is a unique program in Weld County,” says Sherry Meyer, North Range Behavioral Health’s Program Director of Recovery Support Services. “When clients have a safe place to call home, our staff can then integrate them into behavioral health services so they can make lasting change.” North Range staff begin by helping individuals with the application and eligibility process. Once housed, residents receive support from North Range that helps them maintain independence, continue the path of recovery, and realize the safety and security that comes with long-term housing. “I am so proud of the stability Harmony Way provides for residents,” says Meyer. “It provides an opportunity for individuals living with severe and persistent mental illness to see hope in their situation for the first time in years.” North Range is currently searching for a property management agency to help North Range manage day-to-day operations of the property and rental units. Integrating a professional property management partner will enable North Range staff to provide behavioral health services to residents while maintaining healthy and appropriate boundaries that support the therapeutic relationship. Any organization interested in managing Harmony Way can download a Request for Proposal here or email Sherry Meyer at Sherry.Meyer@NorthRange.org for an application. Application submission deadline is 11:59pm Friday November 12, 2021.

Healthy Alternative Medicine Is Personal Training Right for You? stay-atI’ve been a Personal Trainer Taking Care of the Respiratory & Immune Systems Arehomeyoumom,a working for almost 10 years, and I love what

T

here are several Chinese medical techniques that have been scientifically proven to increase the white blood cell count and reduce inflammation, thereby coaxing your system to effectively fight illness. There are also many herbal formulas to choose from that effectively strengthen the immune system and others that address the myriad symptoms that people experience. Here are my absolute favorite techniques that do not involve inserting an acupuncture needle: Cupping: placement of suction cups assists in moving blood and fluids, expel phlegm and improve Lung function. This method is safe for infants, children and adults. Gua Sha: This technique is performed by using a smooth tool (I use a porcelain soup spoon) to firmly press along the skin in broad strokes. For respiratory conditions such as cough, asthma, bronchitis, etc. Gua Sha is done on the back, behind the lungs - from the shoulders to the bottom of the ribs. This assists in breathing, moving blood and fluids, expels phlegm and improves Lung function. This method is safe for infants, children and adults. I have taught families who experience asthma and other recurrent respiratory conditions how to perform this at home. They have found that this method helps to mitigate an asthma attack when used at the immediate onset of symptoms. Sesshokushen: there’s no other word for this, so let me briefly explain! With one acupuncture needle, the practitioner quickly taps all over the surface of the skin. People find this oddly relaxing and children sometimes feel ticklish. This Japanese technique stimulates the production of white blood cells and reduces inflammation. This method is safe for infants, children and adults. Moxibustion: some people are familiar with this from experience, or from seeing it in a movie. ‘Moxa’ is the shortened term for this procedure of placing a light and fluffy herb at specific points on the body, then lighting it with an incense stick. It is taken off when the person feels that it is hot, as this is not for burning the skin. In some cases, the herb is placed on the end of the needle. However, in order to obtain a strong immune response, it is necessary to burn this herb directly on the skin. Before and after research has proven an increase in the white blood cell count when performing moxibustion directly on the skin. This is safe for adults of any age. Unless a child is very weak, moxibustion is not needed for children. For those that are more susceptible to respiratory illnesses, I suggest regular treatment to keep the immune system strong. During these visits I also recommend individual-specific food and/or herbal medicines. Here are more articles about staying healthy through autumn and winter :

Three small steps to avoid weight gain over the Holiday’s?

W

e are coming quickly into the time of year where there is celebration after celebration which usually means there’s food everywhere. And let’s not forget the alcohol. It is such a wonderful time of year to be with your family and friends and celebrate but by the time New Year rolls around you’ve gained 5 – 10 pounds and say to yourself, “Oh, at the first of the year I’ll get back into shape or lose that weight.” Most people would consider it a victory if they don’t gain weight or don’t feel sluggish after the holidays. Here are three small things you can do to avoid that weight gain yet enjoy the holidays without a sense of deprivation. Don’t go to any party, celebration, get-together hungry. If you go to an event hungry, you are likely to overeat and to select foods that you may not always select when you’re in the right mindset. Have a healthy snack an hour or so before the event. A small handful of nuts with an apple or veggies and hummus should do the trick. Practice portion control. So, if you’re going to partake in the party foods you normally might not eat, just portion it out. Your palm is 3-4 oz, which is a standard serving of meat. One serving of cheese, 1 oz, is about the size of three stacked dice. The portion sizes of the Standard American Diet (SAD) are generally much too large to begin. So, when plating food, keep in mind portion sizes. That alone will have a big impact. Eat whatever you put on your plate slowly. Allow your brain to catch up with your stomach. If you have controlled what you put on your plate and you eat slowly, you are 70% more likely to eat less. Eating less is a victory! And after you have finished your plate, wait 5-10 minutes before going back for seconds or having dessert. If you want that dessert, go for it. Just portion it out. I help you through education to make small habit changes that make big changes in your life. Join the upcoming research-proven program in January to have success in weight loss, movement goals, healthier habits, and generally improving the numbers that need to change to improve your health. e are Qualified Listeners, a Veteran & Family Resource Hub based in Colorado, and oftentimes get asked how others honor Veterans on Veterans Day. Navigating the VA System Navigating the VA system can be daunting at best. If you are frustrated with the lack of results you’re getting, we can help. You do not have to do it yourself. On the Home Front

We receive calls from Veterans or a family member asking for assistance on various home projects. Not always do we have the resources to fulfill their request. We are looking for service businesses who would be willing to assist the Veteran Community at either no cost or reduced cost. Specifically in the fields of electrical, plumbing, vehicle repair, home repair/improvement, handrails, grab bars, lawn care, lawn sprinklers, roofing/gutter repair, in-home clutter & organization, boxing & moving, and legal. Your skill and time would have a huge impact on those who don’t have the financial or physical ability to do it themselves. If you have an interest in giving back to our Veterans, please call 720-600-0860 or email Resource@QualifiedListeners.org. For information on our organization, visit www. QualifiedListeners.org. We’re not counselors or therapists. We have trained volunteers eager to call or visit someone who is confined, lonely, has no one to talk to, or needing assistance. We can also connect them to resources if they request. We impact lives, we change lives, we save lives.

eld County foster families have been serving other families and youth in foster care through maintaining a local supplies and clothing closet that other foster and adoptive families in Northern Colorado can access. “We are open to donations of diapers, wipes, and new or gently used clothes (no holes, stains, etc.),” said Maddie, one of the foster parents who donates her time and energy towards this effort. As we approach winter, donations of new or gently used coats and winter accessories for children and youth would be put to good use. American Legion Auxiliary Unit #1985

W

elcome to fall! It has been exciting to see old friends this summer and hopefully we can continue the trend into fall and winter. November 11th is Veterans’ Day. Stop by the post and see what we offer to veteran’s and families. We will be serving chili and hot dogs once again. There is no charge. It is our way of saying “Thank you for your service” to our country. We want to thank the Carbon Valley Rotary for allowing us to use their flags for our FIELD OF FLAGS during the car show on September 11. The car show was to raise funds for our scholarships and thanks to all who attended, we will be awarding three scholarships next spring. On Saturday, November 27th, the Auxiliary is hosting a Holiday Craft Show. The event is from 9 AM to 3PM and will feature a variety of vendors. A local veteran, Ted McArthur will have his many wood working products on display, along with many more cool products. This is open to the public and there is no charge to attend. Check it out and maybe find a cool Christmas gift. Food, sweet treats, a bake sale and drawings complete the day. Proceeds benefit our veterans’ programs. On October 16th, the Auxiliary provided a chili dinner and hot dogs after the Flag Retirement Ceremony to everyone. Keep in mind, our Sons of the American Legion present this as a way to retire old flags honorably. Our hope is to educate all in the communities, the importance of our Nations’ flag. Please note: The American Legion Post 1985 is a flag drop site. Please bring those flags to us and they will get a proper retirement. Call Carole Ott @303-866- Donna Lane@303-833-4172, or the post 303-833-3878 for more details.

United Power Soliciting Requests for Information for Microgrid Projects

U

nited Power is currently soliciting formal Requests for Information (RFIs) from companies interested in partnering with the cooperative to develop several microgrids throughout the cooperative’s service territory. United Power’s microgrid pilot project has the goal of creating several self-contained power systems utilizing battery and solar, or other energy resources. “United Power has a long record of investing in a variety of innovative technologies to learn more about how these systems work and how they can help us serve our members more reliability or reduce costs,” stated Dean Hubbuck, Chief Energy Resource Officer. “We have been discussing the viability of a microgrid project for some time now and want to find a partner willing to invest both money and expertise into this pilot venture.” United Power is Colorado’s second largest cooperative, serving more than 100,000 meters on Colorado’s northern front range. The cooperative has been an innovator in the renewable energy field, energizing the State of Colorado’s first community solar field, Sol Partners in 2009. Since that time they have added 84 megawatts of renewable generation on the system including a landfill methane project, multiple utility scale solar fields and a 4.5-megawatt Tesla battery storage system. “This project is the natural evolution of our interest and investment into alternate energy solutions,” stated Hubbuck. “United Power continues to investigate a number of different concepts with the end goal of providing unique solutions for our growing membership.” Companies interested in submitting RFI’s for the project are encouraged to reach out to Greg Howes, Vice-President of Energy Resource Planning for more information at 303-6371308, or via email at ghowes@unitedpower.com. United Power will be soliciting RFI’s for the microgrid project through the end of the year and plans to begin work on the project in 2022.

Tray Ceilings

T

ray ceilings have not gone out of style, but the style of tray ceilings has undoubtedly changed. No longer the mural-covered ceilings of the past, tray ceilings will add depth and interest to a room, even those with lower ceilings. The tray ceilings of yesterday served a purpose as well as being decorative. Older homes had much taller ceilings, so trays brought them down. They often hid wiring, vents, and plumbing. Today’s tray ceilings are more modern and straightforward, some being recessed only a few inches. If the tray portion has a ledge, soft lighting can be added. Painting tray ceilings is where the fun starts. It can be tricky since many rooms are not truly square. This is where the excellent eye of an experienced painter comes in. It takes a bit of expertise, and it is best to take the time to measure

precisely to have clean lines. You have three parts for a single tray ceiling: the ceiling, the recessed portion, and the band, which is the area that drops. There are also double tray ceilings and sometimes triple. Choosing color/s and deciding where to paint each color is the fun part. One option is to paint everything one color, including the walls. Most popular is probably painting the ceiling and recessed area with ceiling white flat and paint the band in an accent color or the wall color. Another attractive option is to paint only the recessed portion, often in a dramatic saturated color or metallic paint, to set off that space. Sometimes crown molding is involved which is usually painted the same color as the rest of the trim throughout the room. This is another area where the possibilities are endless with paint! These painting techniques work well on other ceilings - coffered, suspended, coved, and even conventional ceilings.

Kitchen Fires Are The Number One Cause of Home Fires

C

ooking-related fires are the number one cause of home fires and home fire injuries and 47 percent of them start as the result of cooking equipment left unattended according to the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA). “Never leave a burner unattended for more than a couple minutes” sounds like an easy rule to follow but is more challenging in practice as distractions arise. Consider setting a timer when you walk away from the range. It not only alerts you when food is ready; it also helps ensure you return to the stovetop before too long after a distraction. Setting a timer at five-minute intervals will remind you to check your stovetop. Keep smoke alarms in good working order, clean and maintain vents, stovetops, countertops, and oven interiors. Keep combustible items such as wooden spoons, rags, oven mitts and loose paper several feet away from the stovetop and oven to prevent these items from starting a fire. Keeping a fire extinguisher nearby. Pay close attention when cooking with oil or grease. For more information visit https://www.nfpa.org/Public-Education Interested in kids’ fire safety? Carbon Valley Santa Cops

T

he Carbon Valley Santa Cops program is an annual event in which the Firestone, Frederick and Dacono Police Departments provide a gift, warm winter clothing and necessities to underrepresented children in the Carbon Valley area during the holiday season. The Carbon Valley Santa Cop program is now accepting referrals for families in need for the upcoming holiday season. If your family needs assistance this year or you know of a family in need, please read the informational letter and fill out the application online at www.firestoneco.gov/SantaCops. Forms may also be picked up from the Firestone Police Department. Referral forms are due by Friday, November 19, 2021. Please note: not all applicants will be accepted, as space is limited, income qualifications apply.

About the Program Starting each fall, this nonprofit program is made possible because of generous businesses and individuals who donate gifts and money to benefit children and families. By early December with all the shopping complete, volunteers and local officers come together for a day of wrapping before gifts are delivered to the children by mid-December.

How Can You Help?

z Nominate a Family: If you’re aware of a family in need, please contact the Firestone Police Department for a nomination form. z Give a Gift: Purchase an unwrapped child’s toy/clothing for ages birth to 16 years and return it to the Firestone Police Department. z Host a Drive: Host a drive at your business or organization to collect toys, hats and gloves, school supplies and more. z Donate: Drop by any local police department during regular business hours to make a contribution by cash or check. You can also mail a check to the Firestone Police Department, 9900 Park Avenue, Firestone, CO 80504. z Sponsor a Family: Contact the Firestone Police Department by calling 303-8330811 for more details on families who need a sponsor. z Sharing Tree: Pick a special ornament from the Police Station holiday tree (available in November) and purchase a gift. Return the gift by the date listed on the ornament. Gifts may either be returned wrapped or unwrapped.

Eligibility The Santa Cops program is a nonprofit program with limited funding and intended only for those who are truly in need. All referrals will be reviewed and undergo an approval process; not all applicants will qualify.

for all your

ave you been frustrated with the market? Is now the right time to get back into the market? You may have read something by a so called “expert” that said the market is correcting or the bubble is bursting. The truth is, while the market is stabilizing a bit, it shows no signs of such an extreme shift anytime soon In March, there were 1,921 homes for sale in the Denver Metro area. By July, there were 4056 homes for sale. This is an astounding doubling of the number of available homes. Although we saw a slight dip in sales prices over the summer, overall, prices have still risen a huge 14.2% year over year. What does that mean for buyers? More houses to choose from, less competition for each house on the market, and more options for everyone. Interest rates are still near historic lows so when is the right time to buy? That would be now! Real Estate historically increases 4% a year on average, for the long-term buying a home is always a good investment and generally will only get more expensive the longer you wait. There have been discussions about interest rates increasing as conditions change, we can’t say when though we know these rates can’t last forever. And what does all of this mean for

sellers? The equity in your home is probably greater than you think. This increased equity, along with the current low interest rates, give you more buying power than ever should you be looking to buy another home, or simply cash out while the market is strong if you aren’t looking to buy. Either way, now is the time to take advantage of the opportunity to buy and sell on your terms. Bottom line, it may be time to seriously consider getting back into the market. he recent cyberattacks on critical public infrastructure in parts of the country have caused concern for many utility customers. United Power continually implements proactive measures to defend the cooperative against potential cyberattacks. Much of this preparation can be attributed to Alie Beauchamp and the cooperative’s information technology team. Beauchamp was promoted to Chief Information Officer in September. “Companies rise and fall on the quality of their information technology,” said Mark A. Gabriel, United Power’s President and Chief Executive Officer. “Our electric system can be particularly vulnerable to cyberattacks, and Alie has positioned us well to address and mitigate those vulnerabilities to the best of our ability. She will continue to play a critical role in creating a competitive business advantage in a digital space that is growing exponentially year-by-year.” Beauchamp joined United Power in 2017 after previously directing information technology for a rural electric cooperative in Oregon. With more than 20 years’ experience and multiple certifications in information security, her vision and leadership immediately elevated the cooperative’s commitment to protecting member information and educating employees to recognize cyber threats. In her new role, Beauchamp will continue to be responsible for establishing United Power’s vision and strategy in all aspects of information technology, including cybersecurity, privacy, data governance, digital transformation and management of the day-to-day technology operations at the cooperative. “Beauchamp has been an asset to United Power, and I am pleased to announce her promotion to Chief Information Officer,” Gabriel said.

The family then relocated to Firestone, Colorado in 1969, where Kris met her future husband, Michael Trejo. he stigma of suicide in our culture today may likely keep you from feeling the freedom to reveal the cause of your loved one’s death, much less talk about how it happened. Your emotions may be all over the map and you know you need to get them to the surface, but opportunities to share your grief with others can be limited by an unwillingness to discuss the subject publicly. In the We Grieve community you will find a connection with people who understand the pressures to bury painful thoughts and feelings, and an openness to surface them with care and compassion. This workshop is designed to give you tools you can use to keep moving forward in life when someone you loved has made the choice to end their life.

Workshops: Free to the Public Grief Workshops are open to all loss communities and are offered on a variety of topics. Grief Workshops utilize a virtual platform and include teaching and small group, loss specific breakouts with discussion enabled by a trained community facilitator. Workshops are scheduled for 90-minute sessions meeting weekly for four consecutive weeks. Go to www.wegrieve.net for more information and to register.

he Weld County Department of Public Safety Communications is joining the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in alerting those using non-4G compatible devices, devices that don’t support Voice Over LTE technology or living in areas where 4G service isn’t available that they could lose cellular service — including the ability to call or text 911 — as early as January of 2022. The service interruption is due to the nation’s major cellular providers eliminating their 3G networks, according to an FCC release. The shutdown of 3G networks will not affect users of 4G or 5G devices that support Voice Over LTE technology or traditional landline service. However, customers using non-smartphones or living in rural areas with no 4G coverage will most likely be impacted by the loss of 3G coverage, according to Tina Powell, Interim Director of the Weld County Department of Public Safety Communications. “Please know that this is not something Public Safety Communications has control over; it’s a move by cell phone providers. As big as Weld County is, there may be some people who don’t have access to 4G coverage and those who have older cellular devices not capable of receiving 4G service,” she said. “Because this change could impact someone’s ability to call or text 911, It’s important people contact their provider to verify their coverage area and that their device will work.” The FCC said in its release that mobile networks are eliminating 3G networks to increase space for 5G technology. While this could impact users of AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile, it could also impact prepaid customers as many providers utilize coverage of the major carriers mentioned above. What you should do: Remember, the shutdown of 3G networks will not affect users of 4G or 5G devices that support Voice Over LTE technology. For those who feel they may be impacted, the FCC recommends visiting their provider’s webpage for the latest information and contacting them to verify if their device will still work. Carrier specific information about the phasing out of 3G can be found on the FCC’s website.
