TRU PACE Celebrates PACE Interdisciplinary Team for National PACE Month Teamwork is key to improving the lives of PACE participants

T

he National P A C E Association has proclaimed September as National PACE Month, an opportunity to celebrate the work of Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly (PACE®).

This year’s theme of “PACE: Many Hands, Many Minds, ONE Goal” highlights the central role of the PACE interdisciplinary team (IDT) in improving the lives of participants and their family caregivers.

TRU PACE, part of TRU Community Care a local non-profit, is a PACE organization that has served Southwest and Boulder Counties for over 2+ years.

There a total of 129 PACE programs that

serve more than 50,000 enrollees in 31 states. PACE enrollees are age 55 and over and need a nursing home level of care.

However, more than 95 percent are able to live in the community with the services and support they receive through

PACE. The PACE interdisciplinary team is one thing that really sets PACE apart from other care delivery models,” said Samantha Black, TRU PACE Executive Director, “So often individuals and families who have health care needs experience a fractured, hard-to-navigate health care system. PACE is just the opposite. In PACE, the interdisciplinary team members

work together to develop effective care plans that solve problems that PACE participants are experiencing.

We have had so many enrollees and their families tell us how PACE has positively impacted their lives.”

T h e interdisciplinary team includes a registered nurse, primary care provider, recreation therapist, dietitian, occupational therapist, PACE center manager, home care coordinator, personal care attendant, transportation specialist, social worker and physical therapist, as well as other specialists such as a behavioral health therapist and pharmacist. Enrollees have 24 hour access to this team. Everyone on the IDT provides

a care plan from their discipline for each enrollee which focuses on the PACE Participants goals.

They work together to provide prevention strategies, coordinate care and provide services at the TRU PACE Day Center.

The center is based in Lafayette where the medical clinic, rehabilitation gym and day center are located. Transportation to and from TRU PACE and other medical appoints are provided by Via Mobility.

days until Thanksgiving, to be followed by Christmas and then another new year. And that’s as of this writing. When you read this, it’ll be less days than that! Just thinking about it causes me internal anxiety. 2019. Where did it go? Each month flew by faster than the preceding one.

Stress. Name it and claim it.

Everybody suffers from it now and again.

Even children, God forbid. Why is stress so common and what can we do about it?

Stress triggers usually include money and time; two of my biggies. Relationships, job, kids, and politics can be other triggers.

What are yours?

Money is always huge because without it you cannot pay bills, buy milk for the kiddos or school supplies. Never having enough money is just like never having enough time. We run, run, run…from one task to the next, one activity to another.

People are plum tired. On the other side of the coin are those who are home-bound; they have too much time and are terribly lonely. Each of these situations cause stress, fear, and depression.

In speaking with my husband (this topic was his idea) he shared the stresses of the workplace. Just this morning his coworker was anxious about the lack of equipment needed to complete the tasks.

I asked Mike how he was able to help out.

“First, I cracked a joke,” Mike said. “It lightened the mood.” He went on to share that with a few words of encouragement, he then reminded his coworker that he

didn’t have control over that situation.

Mike suggested he take a short break, regroup and go on to the next thing.

Mike’s major stresses are work related.

He says, “I can only move so fast. I have to take one thing at a time. I refuse to let the situation overcome me. Instead, I remind myself to step away and don’t say or do anything that will make matters worse. I say a prayer and get on with it.”

During deadline weeks, Mike constantly reminds me that the paper always gets done.

He encourages me to pray and remember that my stress is just an emotion and that I have the power to change that emotion by, simply, removing myself. His reminder to take a break and regroup always helps me and alleviates my stress.

I recently read an essay by Chip Gaines.

He said, “There’s a particular line that kept returning to me again and again these past few weeks: ‘We believe in human kindness, knowing we are made better when we work together.’”

At the end of the essay, there are flyers you can print out that give you ideas how you can be kind to another. Some of the suggestions are: • Mow a neighbor’s lawn • Make time to call an old friend • Ask a stranger how they are doing • Pay for a stranger’s coffee or meal • Help a needy family

The fact is, when we are stressed and overburdened, the act of helping someone else ALWAYS ends up helping ourselves. Shoot, just smiling sincerely at another human being helps us both!

My final words are mixing a Psalm and a Proverb but sum up the words above: To have a calm and undisturbed mind and heart which gives life and health to our bodies you simply need to turn away from negative situations and instead, do good. Because, envy, jealousy, and anger cause internal anguish and even disease. So, again, choose peace.

Pursue peace as we navigate through the holidays. Be kind to others, plan ahead and ask for help…may you enjoy an unusually relaxed tranquility as 2019 winds down.

Junior Livestock Sale Raised $1,123,506

T

he 101st Weld County Fair’s Junior Livestock Sale raised a total of $1,123,506.85! This accounts for $915,100 from the sale of animals and $208,406.85 from supporter’s individual contributions.

This year’s sale was on July 29, 2019, and is now the top grossing sale in Colorado, surpassing the 2019 National Western Stock Show, which garnered $1,027,750 and the 2018 Colorado State Fair, which brought in just over $500,000.

The grand champion market beef and market swine owned by Jed Sidwell and Cash Burnett, sold for $20,000 each. Lauren Frink’s grand champion market lamb followed, selling for $11,000. This year’s grand champion market goat, owned by Rylee Anderson, brought in $10,500 while Jamie Bond’s grand champion turkey garnered $4,500. Finally, Hazen Weber’s grand champion chickens drew $2,750, and Wyatt Herring’s grand champion rabbit pen hopped in at $2,650.

Cruising on the River

H

ave you ever wanted to sample the German Beers and wines while cruising along with beautiful scenery and lots of history?

Well, a Rhine River cruise would fit the bill.

Before you cruise, spend a night or two in Amsterdam, see the Anne Frank House, the boat homes along the canals, and maybe even see some windmills!

You could leisurely ride bikes through the Dutch countryside on a guided tour, if you’d like. You would then sail on through several locks and towards the Rhine River.

Cruising to Cologne Germany, visit the magnificent cathedral there. Of course, take time to have a local beer or wine and, of course, the food! As your riverboat sails on, it is a perfect opportunity to meet new friends and have fun with your traveling partners. You will stop in Koblenz, a 2000 year old town, situated on the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle Rivers. The area was used as a headquarters for the American military during WWII. There is history to learn about and museums to explore.

Passing through the Rhine Gorge be on the lookout for the medieval castles and

vineyards dotted along the shore. See the infamous Lorelei statue. Strasbourg, France is next and then onto the beautiful Black Forest village of Breisach. The town is full of charm, cuckoo clocks and other German specialties.

You can take a guided hike through some of the Black Forest trails, if you’d like. Your last stop would be Basel and then onto Lucerne, Switzerland. On a Rhine River Cruise, there are bikes on board to use when in port or take a guided tour. All is included.

client called us recently in a panic, ‘Please ask your painters to stop. I don’t know if I can live with this color.’

The color was a nice blue/gray, not bright or dark. But way out of her comfort zone.

She had painstakingly chosen this color, applying several samples to the walls, systematically eliminating different shades over time and finally deciding on the one we were painting. We understood her concern. We’ve been through this before.

The paint was wet, the floors were covered with drops and the built-in in cabinetry was covered in plastic. Nothing else that would be in the room was present.

The light fixtures were covered and our portable bright lights were illuminating the area. Once the flooring was uncovered, the drapes were hung and the furniture and decorative items were back in place she forgot she questioned the

color and remembered why she originally chose the color - it complemented her upholstery perfectly.

If you find yourself in this position, don’t be alarmed. Wait. Trust your gut. You initially chose this color, probably because you liked it and felt it would work. Keep in mind you aren’t looking at your completed room. The walls are the backdrop to all those other elements that comprise each area. If you still aren’t comfortable with the look once everything is back together, try revamping the lighting. Change your bulbs to one of the newer types of ‘revealing’ bulbs. They truly provide a cleaner light. Rearrange lamps and add lighting in corners. This can make a world of difference.

Most of our clients that have that initial fear end up satisfied with their color choices. Sometimes, though, you just know. In that case the solution is a new color and the answer can be as simple as moving up or down one shade on the color strip.

ith 24 Democrats running for President, it’s not surprising that candidates are starting to drop out. While we will not speculate on rumors about John Hickenlooper’s future plans, it’s his right to run for Senate if he so chooses. His entrance into the race would not change my campaign. My support is building from the ground up, through my extensive travels across the state meeting with those voters who feel like they are not being represented equitably. I am working full time while I run my campaign because I not only love my job, but I can’t afford not to have a job. I’m drawing the support of people who know what it’s like to struggle. To struggle with healthcare, survive while being unemployed, starting your own small business, and the cost of financial security because of student debt. That’s the life my wife and I lead, and as we’ve learned, many other Coloradans do too. I am an activist.

And as a life-long activist, no matter what happens in this Senate race, I will continue working towards justice and equity in Colorado, just as I have for nearly two decades. As a proud Coloradan with seven generations on one side and as a first-generation Coloradan on my Mom’s side, living and working in both rural and urban communities, I’m seeing a desire from Coloradans for representation in Washington that more accurately reflects their needs and their lives. Numerous projects are underway – both residential and commercial. Lastly, the Board greenlighted a conceptual design plan for a public works facility. Frederick Resident Wins Volunteer of the Year Award The Colorado Association of Chiefs of Police (CACP) gives this award out to one citizen volunteer each year.

R

ick McCaskill was awarded the Citizen Volunteer of the Year Award on June 27.

McCaskill has volunteered for the Frederick Police Department for five years, making a measurable impact in the department.

The Volunteer Citizen of the Year Award recipient is chosen based on their involvement with their community and the selfless volunteer work they provide. The Chief of Police is in charge of nominating the citizen they believe deserves the award.

In McCaskill’s nomination, Chief of Police Todd Norris said “Rick clearly exemplifies the virtue of good citizenship and has gone over and beyond simply volunteering his time. His dedication to our agency has ultimately contributed to the success of our organization.”

In 2018, McCaskill volunteered over 250 hours, helping Chief Norris with various tasks including updating policies and procedures, collecting data for the annual report and processing old case files. McCaskill also helps the rest of the department with tasks such as assisting with evidence room audits, issuing pet licenses and fingerprinting just to name a few.

McCaskill volunteered for many of the programs the police department has, including National Night Out, Neighborhood Watch and Santa Cops. All of these programs play a large role in shaping the Frederick community.

ELD COUNTY, CO — The efforts of the Board of County Commissioners to exercise local control over mineral resources in unincorporated Weld County have been further realized as the Weld County Oil and Gas Energy Department (OGED) officially opens for business today. The department is located at 1301 N. 17th Ave. in Greeley.

“Today is a big day for Weld County,” Weld County Commissioner Chair Barbara Kirkmeyer said. “This new department will provide clarity for the energy industry when it comes to permitting and serve as a central location for residents who have questions for the energy industry or want to get more information about drilling activity in Weld County.”

Approved by the board on July 8, the OGED will be responsible for permitting, regulating and enforcing land use regulations related to oil and gas operations for drilling sites located in unincorporated Weld County. The department will be staffed with 12 employees.

Weld County has more than 21,000 wells and represents 88 percent of the state’s oil production and 36 percent of its gas production.

The regulations the department will enforce were established during a three-reading process which made amendments to Chapter 8: Public Works, Chapter 12: Licensing, Chapter 23: Zoning and Chapter 21: Areas and Activities of State Interest and established the county’s 1041 process. The changes, approved July 22, dealt largely with the procedures for obtaining a 1041 Weld County Oil and Gas Location Assessment (WOGLA) permit. Among the changes, the county has implemented a building unit setback of 500 feet, meaning there can be no drilling within 500 feet from any building unit in unincorporated Weld County. However, there are options for the oil and gas industry to obtain a waiver from those requirements provided that all WOGLA requirements have been followed along with best management practices to protect public health, safety and welfare. A waiver can also be granted to a landowner if they can show that a proposed drilling location would hinder the ability to perform agricultural needs such as irrigating, moving livestock, etc.

Zoning changes approved in Chapter 23 involved moving the WOGLA process to Chapter 21, effectively placing responsibility for the process under the director of the OGED. Chapter 8 code changes involved housekeeping measures related to granting grading permits and establishing road access requirements.

“Wh

at is the Bible?” This was the question I asked my daughter one evening as we talked together. She answered variously: “Truth. God’s word.

Scripture.” I assured her that each of those was right. But I wanted her to see something different on this occasion.

I said, “From beginning to end, Old Testament to New Testament, God is conveying one message throughout all the pages of the Bible. I described to her that everything in the Bible is connected by this one message or theme.

Perhaps you’re like me and enjoy studying scripture up close. It is hard but rewarding work to bring out the author’s intended meaning from a section of text, and then make correct application for today’s believers. Zeroing in on passages provides great depth and helps build our knowledge and faith while also helping us live as God desires.

However, I believe it is important to understand the big picture of the book so many of us hold dear in our hearts.

When I am preparing for a trip to the mountains, I sometimes study the USGS 7.5 minute topographic maps. These provide amazing detail at a scale unlike most maps that are available for purchase for backcountry travel. Even though I appreciate the detail of the USGS maps, I always refer to my standard ones to help me maintain the big picture of where I am and what’s around me. Similarly, in Bible study, most often we are focusing on small sections of scripture, but we don’t want to become blind to the big picture. The old saying, “Cannot see the forest for the trees,” captures the point clearly. While it’s important to study trees, we must also keep the whole forest in mind. When we keep the big picture in view, we will better understand

smaller sections of text by knowing how a particular narrative or teaching fits into the overall message of the Bible.

So, what is the one message that connects all of scripture? I told my daughter, “One way to understand the Bible as a whole is to think of it as God’s story of redemption.” Certainly, concepts such as love, grace, and mercy are paramount, but as far as what it is that God has been working to accomplish throughout time is the redemption of all people. Paul wrote to the Ephesians and said this about God’s planning, “…even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him” (1:4). Understand what Paul is saying. Before the foundation of the world, God had chosen us in Christ.

Later in Ephesians, Paul uses a phrase, “God’s eternal purpose,” (3:11) when describing all that was realized in Christ

Jesus. What these passages and others like it teach is that Christ and His redeeming work was in the mind of God before He said, “Let there be light.”

God’s eternal purpose is to redeem mankind through Christ. It is this message that permeates throughout all the pages of the Bible. The Old Testament points forward to the coming of the Messiah, while the New shows us how we can have relationship with God, in Christ.

Massage: A Necessity, Not a Luxury

S

ometimes when people think of getting a massage they think of it as luxury or a pampering. It’s seen as a treat and something people may only allow themselves once or twice a year. However, massage therapy has been growing and changing in recent years, causing more and more people to realize that massage can have a wide range of benefits. Of course there are direct effects like changes that happen to decrease muscle pain and tension, reduce stress (lowers cortisol levels) but, there are also indirect effects like being in a comfortable setting and a compassionate human presence that can all lead to an overall healthier emotional state.

In todays world people have higher stress levels, causing us to feel anxious, not sleep well and have a hard time relaxing.

Receiving massage on a regular basis can help reduce these feelings, causing us to feel more relaxed, be happier and sleep better at night .

Also, we are constantly looking at/ using our cell phones, tablets or computers which causes us to look down. This causes neck pain and soreness and in severe cases can lead to the impingement of the cervical nerve, causing pain to radiate down your arm and into your hand (known as cervical radiculopathy). The action of constantly looking down over a long period of time can also cause us to have bad posture leading to severe upper back pain, shoulder pain and bad overall spine health.

Receiving a therapeutic massage at least once a month can help relieve and prevent tight muscle build up and trigger points from forming within the m u s c l e s caused by repetitive motions such as looking

down, twisting of the arms/wrists, holding arms above your head or out to the side, caring objects (such as purses) or children, pushing down on the gas/break when driving or heavy lifting. Also, injuries that we have received throughout our lifetime whether they are recent or even injuries from childhood can cause muscle tension and trigger point build up over time. For example a foot injury that happened years ago can eventually lead to knee and or hip pain which can then cause lower back pain reaching all the way up to your upper back, shoulders and neck.

Most people will initially come in for a massage because they are experiencing some sort of pain/tension or have experience an injury. Those initial massage sessions are spent focusing on alleviating the discomfort from pain and helping in the healing process of the injury. This may mean someone comes in every 1-2 weeks in the beginning, then every 3 weeks getting to the ideal once a month schedule. The massage then becomes more of a maintenance massage to prevent future injuries and muscle tension from happening, allowing us to function better in our every day lives.

The national certification recognizes hospitals that make exceptional efforts to foster better outcomes for stroke care.

“As an organization, we are committed to providing the very best care and experience for every patient, every day,” said Longs Peak Hospital President Lonnie Cramer. “The Primary Stroke Center certification reflects the additional work we have done to build a stroke program and team of experts that deliver high quality care for our community through efficient protocols, evidenced-based practice and innovative technology.”

Longs Peak’s stroke program was designed to meet the community’s stroke care needs across the full spectrum, said Jennifer Fairbank, the coordinator of the program.

“We help people in the community to learn about stroke prevention and how to recognize the signs and symptoms of a stroke when it actually happens. We deliver exceptional care at the hospital when a patient is experiencing a stroke.

And we work closely with our patients after a stroke to ensure they have the resources and support they need when they leave the hospital so they can go on to live their extraordinary lives,” Fairbank said.

Record Size Hail Stone Falls in Eastern Colorado

C

olorado has a new record… ...for deadly ice balls dropping from the sky.

On Tue, August 13th, 2019 a 4.8 inch hailstone plummeted to the earth and was recorded in Bethune Colorado. It was the largest in state history, about the size of a softball.

Why does it hail so much in Colorado? The answer is a mixture of high altitude and dry air.

As upslope winds force moisture up in to the atmosphere, clouds hold the moisture at colder temperatures and ultimately hail forms. If you have lived in Weld or East Boulder County for any length of time you have probably seen the devastating damage that these hail storms can cause.

What happens if my home is damaged by hail?

When a major hail storm occurs, you will likely know about it. There will be damaged tree branches and limbs on the ground and vehicles left out in the neighborhood may be pocked with dents. When this is the case there is also a strong likelihood that your roof may have been damaged and you may decide to file a claim with your homeowners insurance company. You have one year from the date of the storm to file your claim. Once a claim has been filed, your insurance company will send an adjuster to assess any damage and file a claim on your behalf. It is highly recommended that you have an experienced roofing professional inspect your roof before filing a claim.

What is the One Square Rule, and does it apply to me? If you live in the city limits of Frederick it may be even easier to get your roof replaced by insurance. In Frederick, if you have cumulative damage to your roof equalling a 10’ X 10’ section, (approx. 66 shingles or 100 square feet), then your insurance company is required to replace the entire roof rather than just offer

a settlement for repairs. This same building code is required in Loveland, Thornton and Longmont as well. Once again, if you’re not sure you qualify, consult a roofing professional.

The most important thing to remember is that you don’t have to do this on your own.  Consult a certified roofing professional for a free, no-obligation inspection.  He or she can then guide you through the process if you have a legitimate claim, and act as your advocate with the insurance company.  Make sure that you do your homework and check the references and reviews of any roofing contractor you are considering to do work on your home.  File your claim within one year of the storm date.

Frederick High Football Team Trains Next Generation of Warriors

T

his summer, instead of simply enjoying the break from school with friends and family, the Frederick High School Warriors football team gave back to the Carbon Valley community. On both July 16th and 17th, the FHS Warriors hosted the Carbon Valley Dreamer Scholar Class from Thunder Valley K-8 for a summer football camp.

The Carbon Valley Dreamer Scholar Class is a cohort of students from lowincome families in the Carbon Valley area that were sponsored by the “I Have A Dream” Foundation of Boulder County when they were in second grade. Each student in “I Have A Dream” programming (whom they call “Dreamer Scholars”) receive continued academic and socioemotional support from the time they start the program until they graduate from high school. Upon high school graduation, each Dreamer Scholar is promised a $10,000 scholarship towards continuing education, whether that be a four-year college or technical school.

Currently, the Dreamer Scholars in the Carbon Valley Class are starting their 6th grade year; and, with the transition into middle school, comes new roles and responsibilities. To help ease the worries that some of the Dreamer Scholars had about this transition, the Frederick High Warriors held a Q&A about their experiences in middle and high school.

Though the high school students were volunteering to act as role models for their younger counterparts, the days were not all life lessons and academics. Taking

advantage of the two beautiful summer days, the Frederick High Warriors coached the Carbon Valley Dreamer Scholars in kickball, flag football, and water games to cool down. They even found time to let the younger students, and their Program Director, Aurora, dress up in the high school team’s uniforms!

Although the younger students needed a little coaching to start off, there was a fierce rivalry between the younger and older students. The second day saw the group revisit a dot drill exercise required for the football players. The first time the football team tried this activity with the younger students on the first day, the group was a little slow to embrace the activity. After a few rounds of students tried the drills, they quickly found themselves in a competition with the older students.

One Dreamer Scholar, Jolin, told one of “I Have A Dream” Americorps VISTA Summer Associate, Ms. Kathleen, that she practiced all night for the dot drill between the first and second days. On the second day, Jolin nearly beat the football players in their own drill, and continued practicing after competition was long over.

Sons of the American Legion #1985 Flag Retirement Ceremony

J

oin the S. A. L. on Saturday, September 14th for the semi-annual flag retirement. We start promptly at 4 PM at the Firestone Public Works site to honorably retire old, worn, torn flags that are no longer serviceable. We invite everyone in our communities to observe and participate in this event to educate everyone on what is proper and acceptable. After the ceremony, the American Legion Auxiliary will provide a Chili Supper and the S.A.L. will offer Burgers and Dogs at the American Legion Post 1985, located at 870 1st Street in Firestone. A great time get to know your neighbors and spend time with family and friends. I

’ve been professionally managing Facebook pages since 2010. One of my FAVORITE things about FB is the immediacy it offers to business owners!

Why? Well, here’s a great example: At one point I had four different kids in three different schools with three different start and end times and days off only sometimes coordinated. Snow days were a total nightmare. Why? I’d have to watch the news and HOPE I caught the scrolling for my students or tune in to the radio or maybe call the school phone number. All of these options were inconvenient for me – while still getting the kids breakfast, backpacks ready, school assignments signed, etc… IN CASE they DID have school.

Today, in the same scenario all the parent needs to do is pull up the school’s page on Facebook. DONE. Let’s imagine a grocery store has a freezer that goes out. They can create a post on their FB page that promotes a great sale for their customers. They don’t lose revenue, and the customers can save $$!

How about a business that has 2/3 of its employees out due to colds or flu? They can tell people they’re operating on a skeleton crew and ask for their patience. Their customers will appreciate the heads up and not be upset if their phone call isn’t answered on the first ring.

One client recently had a giveaway of 4 AMC movie tickets on their page. They asked what people loved most about the Summer of 2019. This is great, as there is no right or wrong answer and people feel good while they’re sharing about things that make them happy! There were over 25 responses! When was the last time you had response like that on your page?

If you’re not tapping into the immediacy of FB, you’re missing opportunity. Talk about what’s happening TODAY. Have your finger on the pulse of what’s happening. The people on the page will be much more likely to respond. Many people watch the threads (conversations) on business posts.

St. Brigit Episcopal Church to Celebrate Autumnal Equinox

A

re you looking for non-traditional worship, something just a little out of the ordinary?

St. Brigit Episcopal Church offers just that in its unique quarterly services celebrating the change of seasons. You are invited to welcome Autumn at St. Brigit’s Equinox Celebration on Sunday, September 22, 2019, at 6:00p.m.

The Autumnal Equinox Service is part of St. Brigit’s Áit Caol series, now in its eighth year. Áit Caol (pronounced atch qweel) is Gaelic for “A Thin Place.” These services are created to offer guests an experience of God through a special liturgy, which combines ancient tradition with contemporary language. They include beautiful, engaging meditation areas, reflecting the Scriptural lessons, and sacred music with a Celtic sound.

In keeping with the Celtic tradition of honoring the earth as God’s creation, St. Brigit celebrates the Autumnal Equinox, marking the transition between Summer and Fall.

“Equinox” is a translation of the Latin word, aequinoctium, or “equal night.” On this day, there are 12 hours each of daylight and darkness. The Earth’s axis is parallel to the Sun, so the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are illuminated equally. Sunrise occurs at 7a.m. and sunset, at 7p.m.

Ancient people marked this day with both thanksgiving for the harvest and prayers for protection during the approaching time of darkness and cold. St. Brigit will celebrate this bittersweet time by reflecting with gratitude on God’s abundant gifts and eternal presence.

Older children are welcome at the service. Childcare will be provided for children under age six. Guests are invited to walk St. Brigit’s outdoor labyrinth prior to the service.

United Power Ranked in Top 10 List for Energy Storage Among Smallest and Only Colorado Utility to Make the List

U

nited Power has been named as one of a select group of utilities that connected the most energy storage capacity to the grid in 2018, earning it a spot on the annual Top 10 utility industry list compiled by the Smart Electric Power Alliance (SEPA).

In survey results released August 6, United Power ranked No. 10 on the utility energy storage list for Annual Megawatthours with 18.2 megawatt-hours (MWh) in interconnected capacity in 2018.

United Power was the only Colorado utility to be listed in the top ten and is among the smallest of the utilities to make the list. The survey ranked battery storage initiatives from a mix of investor-owned, municipal and cooperative utility systems – including some of the largest energy companies in the country. United Power is a member-owned electric cooperative serving just over 92,000 meters and is currently operating two Tesla battery storage systems—one of which is the largest battery storage system in Colorado.

“Being recognized in the top 10 with some of the largest utilities across the country is an honor and a testament to the innovation that our board and staff

are working hard to achieve. We want to ensure that the latest emerging energy technologies are powering our members into the future,” said John Parker, United Power’s Chief Executive Officer. “Despite being one of the smaller utilities on this list, we continue to be leaders in energy innovation in Colorado, among cooperatives, and when measured against some of the largest investor-owned utilities across the country.”

y following these important steps, you’ll get a head start on preparing to sell your home: 1. Welcome buyers. Make your front door visible by painting the door, adding a new doormat and clearing debris. Mow the lawn and prune hedges. Plant colorful flowers to attract attention from the street.

Repair broken items such as screens, shingles and lighting to make a great first impression.

2. Make it sparkle. Cleanliness implies a home has been well cared for. Recaulk grime-prone bathrooms and the kitchen for a fresh, clean look. Shampoo rugs and carpets to eliminate stains and odors. Tidy each room, including cabinets and closets, before showing.

3. Start packing. Cluttered rooms turn buyers off and make your house look smaller. A home filled with personal belongings makes it difficult for others to envision living there. Store away excess furniture, toys and personal decorations, such as family photos. Pack up things you don’t use on a daily basis and put in storage.

Weld County Solidifies Friendship Agreement With Israel

relationship that began with an act of kindness during the 2013 flood was strengthened today, August 6, 2019, as the Weld County Board of Commissioners reaffirmed a Declaration of Friendship with Israel; specifically, with the Samaria region and Shomron Regional Council, which represents Samaria along the country’s northern West Bank.

“This partnership fosters goodwill between communities and opens up dialogue between Weld County and Israel that can be used as a pathway for both entities to assist each other in times of need,” Commissioner Sean Conway said.

“This relationship may also open up trade opportunities for Weld County businesses which can strengthen both Israel and our county.”

This friendship was originally formed during the Weld County flood in 2013. Weld County resident Michael Gale — who has visited Israel 13 times — was contacted by friends in Samaria and asked if Weld County was in need of supplies or aid. This touching gesture of international aid resonated strongly with the commissioners and began a unique international friendship. Since that initial contact, both Samaria and Weld County have discovered they share many similarities with regard to climate, energy production, agricultural production, water conservation and conservative values.

In May, the commissioners signed a Declaration of Friendship with Samaria, Israel, that expressed the desire to develop a positive relationship between governments, businesses and communities that will assist in the prosperity of each region. Gale then delivered the signed declaration to Yossi Dagan, Chair of the Shomron Regional Council on his next trip to Israel where he, along with 25 other Weld County residents, were guests of the Shomron Regional Council. Dagan gave a speech and signed the declaration, which Gale has returned to the commissioners. There has been no cost to Weld County residents for this friendship or for Gale’s trip to deliver the declaration to Dagan on behalf of the board.

“This friendship is mutually beneficial,” Conway said. “Hopefully, this is the beginning of a long-range relationship that leads to visits to Weld County by citizens from Israel who want to learn more about our county and in turn visits to Israel from Weld County residents.”

n August, United Power welcomed Meghan Dewey to fill its newly created role of Member Engagement Officer. At United Power, Dewey will be responsible for developing and implementing a cohesive engagement strategy highlighting the cooperative’s commitment to its communities and its members. She will direct member services, new business, energy management and marketing and communications to develop programs to meet members’ diverse and changing needs.

Dewey comes to United Power with a track record of enhancing customer experience and implementing successful customer-minded energy efficiency programs after spending seven years in various leadership roles at one of California’s largest utilities, Pacific Gas & Electric. While with PG&E, she spearheaded one of the country’s largest and most impactful energy efficiency programs and technology portfolios with more than 100 customer programs. She was most recently involved in the company’s wildfire safety program, designing new programs, products and services to advance customers’ resiliency and meet their energy needs during proactive power shutoffs.

In addition to her experience leading program development and new product design, Dewey also oversaw the company’s legislative strategy for energy efficiency and demand-side management. She successfully advocated for landmark legislation giving investorowned utilities the ability to develop new program models that would help meet the state’s aggressive carbon neutral goals.

She served as co-chair of a statewide stakeholder engagement coalition representing California investor-owned utilities as the state moved to a new energy efficiency administration and program design model.

Committed to extending her leadership influence beyond the office, Dewey has also been active in representing the industry on various boards and committees and mentoring men and women pursuing careers in the energy and utility industry.

“United Power has a bold vision for its future, and we’re excited to add Meghan’s perspective as we develop our long-term strategy,” said John Parker, United Power Chief Executive Officer.
