Marogil Dentistry of Frederick Instills Hope

By Jan Sciacca Perhaps you know the feeling of waking up and feeling the anxiety that a first dentist’s visit causes, or ANY dentist visit. That’s how it was for me. The Carbon Valley Consumer Report was founded as a means to let area residents know about area businesses. From time to time, we do follow up articles on businesses we reported on previously. That

was the case this time. Editor/publisher Kelly Martindale wanted to do a follow up story on Marogil Dentistry and report on the business nearly two ½ years after they came to town. We didn’t want to just report; we wanted an experience. Since I am without dental insurance and looking for a new dentist, it was deemed I would be the “ideal” patient to take advantage of Dr. Hani

Aesthetic Flooring Blesses Carbon Valley Help Center

By Jan Sciacca The Carbon Valley Help Center, which opened in February 2013 in the former Firestone town hall building, continues to grow in its mission to help people in immediate need move toward self-sufficiency. While blessing others they received a huge blessing from another area business. Aesthetic Flooring, located on Highway 66/I-25 in Mead, provided 639 sq. feet of installed carpeting valued at approximately $2000. Last month Aesthetic Flooring heard that the Help Center was struggling with old carpeting that just wouldn’t clean up and had outlived its “life.” Although Aesthetic Flooring was in the midst of one of its busiest times of the year, they immediately assessed the situation, measured, then located a quality commercial grade carpet with a built-in pad and installed it. Gloria Walsh, Treasurer of the Help Center, is thrilled. She shared that when she worked the Dacono Music Festival in August, the last thing she thought she’d receive was new carpeting. But while working the Festival, the carpeting that the organization desperately needed was casually discussed. Through a bit of networking the need was made known and fulfilled. This is another great example of the community coming together to support one another. The CVCR is proud to give “A Shout Out of Appreciation” to Aesthetic Flooring & Hard Surfaces, Inc. They can be reached at 970.535.0461 and are located at 4350 Hwy 66 just east of I-25.

Marogil’s current new patient offer of $69 for an exam, x-rays and a regular cleaning. As I went through the day waiting for the time to pass until my appointment, my mind wandered back to the previous dentists I’ve had, ten in all. As a child, my first dentist used no Novocain or deadener. He also told me I’d have dentures by the time I was thirty. Another dentist sawed off my two front teeth to get rid of a filling that wouldn’t hold. Being a baby boomer, I have the infamous tetracycline gray teeth. One crown

after another was installed in my mouth. Some teeth and crowns had root canals. One dentist told me my mouth looked like a seventy year-old farmers, which I took offense to, not only for myself but for the farmer’s sake too. One gets the picture of the investment I have in my mouth. Every dentist I have been to has patched my teeth with his own version of what he thinks should be done. I’ve been to individuals and to corporate organizations. The results were always the same . . . decades of hopelessness that anything would ever change for me . . . until now. Dr. Hani Marogil and his staff changed all that for me. I’ve been to lots of dentists so what is

What’s On My Mind

Deadline for Every Issue of the CVCR is the 15th of Each Month...Late??? Try Anyway!

Kelly Martindale, Publisher

Youth & Seniors

My sister pours out unconditional love to the children and seniors she cares for. My cousin pours out grace and encouragement to each person she comes in contact with. When a person is passionate about something, they pour themselves into that activity and they give everything they have to others in that area of passion. There are two locals who pour out themselves for others in our communities and I’d like to introduce you to them. Seniors, especially those homebound, are the passion of Dacono’s Carl Randolf. I’ve met for several hours with Carl and his wife, Peggy, and each time I hear him speak on behalf of our local senior population I am moved to tears. I’m not going to give you all the background of this non-profit organization, Tri Town Community Seniors, Inc., you can read the history and about who all are involved when you have time at www.tritowncommunityseniors.com. What I want to share is how this group is HELPING those who find it difficult to help themselves in our area. Take for example, this elderly woman…she is homebound and hasn’t driven in several years. She can’t drive so she cannot get to her many doctor’s appointments because she doesn’t have family available to help her. She lives on less than $700 a month and food stamps. Every penny goes to bills as she is unaware of any programs to help her out. Her mobile home is falling down around her and she can hardly mow her own yard because of her two back surgeries, plus she needs to pull around her oxygen tank. When Tri Town Community Seniors hear about a situation such as this they move

into action! Someone takes her to her appointments. Others help her find food programs and meal delivery services. A volunteer mows her yard. Coordinated efforts are put into action to fix her porch and find programs that aid seniors on a low income with those types of needs. And they are doing these types of services out of the goodness of their hearts, so far. They see a need and they are striving to fulfill it. Availability and time are the first and most important ways Carl and the rest of the group are helping our local seniors. But they could do so much more with the help of CVCR readers. Do you know of someone who can donate a passenger van? It’s a tax write-off! Do you own a business and need to reduce your taxable income? You can choose to support Tri Town Community Seniors and do a year-end donation; better yet, commit to a monthly donation. You can go to their website and give a one-time donation through paypal.com which is very easy. Every one of the CVCR readers know at least one older person who might benefit from these services. And every one of us has at least one extra dollar to put towards helping our local senior population. Join me, please. I just made a donation through PayPal on their website. It’s such an easy process to help another one of our neighbors. Please read Carl’s heart-felt letter of gratitude on page 23. The second person I’d like to introduce you to, is Dianna Lopez. She is a Firestone resident and owns the GoAirheads Airsoft Field and Store in Erie on CR 7. It’s a unique business reminiscent of my upbringing where my siblings and friends and I played “Army” or “Cowboys and Indians” or “Cops and Robbers.” We’d run around for hours, hiding in barns, climbing trees and jumping in ditches. Dianna’s business gives youth and adults, alike, an exhilarating, unforgettable experience in a unique battle zone completely organized, mediated and refereed.

Being in a rural environment, there are not many choices for entertainment and many times people who are bored get into trouble. GoAirheads Airsoft Field is a safe, monitored environment where you learn to strategize, get exercise, and experience victory and loss; each being a part of life. “Plan strategies, compete against friends, and lead your team to victory across complex acres of walls, hideouts, and barn areas….Only the top shots and bravest commandos master the field and triumph in our airsoft wars,” states the website. This is for male and females alike! GoAirheads demands that participants follow rules, play fair, they have gun safety talks by local police, and they do not allow profanity. Dianna recently shared with me that there are some issues that are being addressed for the county and those residing around the business. Dianna is working to make sure all issues are taken care of. But she needs the help of those who know of and have used the field. She has asked for letters to be written to the county sharing the positive experiences you’ve had. You can email her at dianna_87@hotmail.com for more information. I hope you will join Dianna and me to keep this business open. I want to thank each of you who has helped me in the past. We’ve given nearly $3,000 to some of our neighbors who were in need medically and we also blessed Bea on her 100th birthday. Bea said she did receive OVER 100 birthday cards! Don’t you just love living along the I-25 Corridor?! We make up a great group of communities!

5 Financial Missteps to Avoid When Buying a Home

You might have pulled off a great feat, like saving up for that down payment, but there are several financial missteps that can complicate your prospects of buying a home. Avoid these five blunders by managing your spending and bills long before you look for a new home. 1. Letting Your Credit Score Drop Your credit score directly impacts your ability to get a home loan, the type of loan you qualify for and the interest rate. If you have borderline credit – a score in the low- to mid-600s – further credit mishaps can prevent approval. If you have credit challenges such as bankruptcy or late payments, start your house search several months earlier. Re-establish your credit by paying down credit cards to 30 percent or less of the limit and correcting errors on your report. And avoid checking your credit score too much; constantly checking it counts against you. 2. Languishing in Debt Consumer debt accounts for 35 percent of your credit score. A late payment's effect depends on the strength of your score, but the account type and the time since the last late payment also matters. If any of your accounts are in collection, it's highly advised you pay them off before seeking loan approval.

3. Shopping Sprees Stay far away from credit-driven shopping sprees. Even paying cash for big-ticket purchases can raise red flags with a lender. They'll check your bank statements for unusually large deposits and withdrawals and may require an explanation for them. 4. Changing Jobs A job change may have an adverse effect on your loan approval because lenders calculate your ability to pay a home loan by averaging your past two years of income. If you can avoid interrupting stable employment during the home-buying process, that's probably best. 5. Maxing Out Your Purchasing Power Even though your lender qualifies you for a certain amount, only you know whether you can comfortably afford the payment. Try to stick with the price range that yields your ideal monthly payment. Looking for homes at the top of your budget limits your ability to increase your offer in a multiple-offer situation. Re-Elect Peggy Randolph for Dacono City Council

Peggy Randolph is running for re-election to one of two seats on Dacono’s City Council. She has a proven track record with the city and citizens of the community. In fact, Peggy Randolph has been commended for her work in bringing lighting improvements to the Dacono BMX race track, located at the south end of town on Forest Avenue. She made a contact at the Chamber of Commerce luncheon one day, and that is the company that was recommending to go with. That company's lighting uses LED lighting, which is a much whiter light and is more efficient from a billing standpoint. That contract was approved April 14, earlier this year. And it was commented that the LED lighting was "phenomenal." Randolph said she was happy to save the city lots of money on this project and hopes to participate in more positive endeavors for the City in the future. Peggy has proven herself as someone who not only moves forward but follows through. Peggy works diligently with Dacono’s businesses and several have already promised their support and vote. Some of these include: • Kathy Madsen of FIORI HAIR SALON LLC • Jeremy & Susan Mock of JT's BARBER SHOP LLC • Matt Morgan of BEAR CLAW SHARPENING LLC • Rosa Mendoza of BURRITO DELIGHT MEXICAN FOOD • Felex of CARNICERIA MEXICO Peggy Randolph asks for your support and vote as well. If you have any questions regarding her perspective on any Dacono issues you can contact her at ranpeg52@aol.com. Peggy reminds you all to watch for mail-in ballots on October 1. This is a mail-in election only.

Area Mayor’s Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings FIRESTONE MAYOR, PAUL SORENSEN

z As our summer begins to wind down and the new school year begins, I am reminded of the “What did you do during your summer vacation?” writing assignments from my childhood. I’m sure those stories Paul Sorensen were always filled with fun adventures and I hope this summer was no different. Firestone had a great summer season with numerous community events, including our signature 4th at Firestone, a Community Softball Tournament and a very successful Food & Flick Friday series. Our partnership with the Carbon Valley Park & Recreation District for our movie nights

FREDERICK MAYOR, TONY CAREY

z September always brings with it my favorite time of Tony Carey year: fall and Miners Day! That’s right, our annual community celebration is just right around the corner with the Miners Day Parade kicking things off at 10 a.m. Saturday September 20th. Please

brought very creative movie-themed activities that many enjoyed. This summer was another spectacular opportunity to partner with a number of organizations and businesses for these events to showcase our community pride here in Firestone. z The summer season also brought many improvements to our community streets. Some of the projects included Locust Street (CR 19) repair and resurfacing, chip seal and restriping on several main roads, and the beginning of the widening of Firestone Boulevard. Thanks to our Town board and staff we were able to bundle several of our road improvement projects and saved our community more than $300,000. But we’re not done yet. Look out this fall for improvements to be made to Park Avenue and Frontier Street, paving of a portion of the parking lot at the Sports Complex and the paving of the Firestone Boulevard expansion. In preparing for next year, the Town will be reviewing its recently completed road condition survey which will help us prioritize next year’s improvements. z The lights at the Sports Complex are completed and the two pedestrian bridges for the trail connections near Jacob H. Firestone Memorial Park are being fabricated. Installation will take

place as soon as possible. z I had the honor to recognize two amazing members of our community with a Community in Motion award. The first award went to Eileen McCluskey, the former director of the Carbon Valley Library, for her valuable contributions to our community through outreach programs and her desire to help nonprofit organizations. Secondly, Teresa Curtis was honored for her long history of volunteerism with the Town and other organizations. I had the honor and pleasure of working closely with both of these amazing community friends. z On a more solemn note, September brings the first anniversary of the tragic floods of 2013. Many of the signs of destruction are repaired, but the scares of the losses many had to endure will take longer to heal. Thanks to the many who came to the aid of neighbors during this catastrophe. Our community weathered the storm, learned from our experiences and is stronger and better prepared as a result of the flood. z I want to hear your concerns or recommendations, so please contact me so we can schedule a time to get together. z Psorensen@ci.firestone.co.us

check the town’s website for more information on all of the great entertainment that will be offered throughout the day. I want to say a special thank you to all of the staff and volunteers who make this event so enjoyable for the community each year. z Fall also means harvest season for local fruit and vegetables which you have access to at the Frederick Market for one more month. The Frederick Market is wrapping up another successful season each Thursday in September and with two more special events this month: Community Connection Day on September 11th and Oktoberfest on the market’s final day, September 25th. I hope you’ll come out and support this important community asset while enjoying some time with your neighbors. z The Community BBQ Tour has three more stops throughout Frederick in September: Countryside Park September 3rd, Summit View Park September 8th and Firefighters Park on September 15th. This community program is one of my personal favorites because

it gives us a chance to get out into the community as a Board and answer questions from our neighbors. We’ve had some great conversations at our previous thirteen stops and look forward to more, so if you missed your neighborhood’s stop, consider putting one of those dates on your calendar and come join us for some free food and bring your questions! z Lastly, I want to thank the Frederick Police Department and all of our incredible Neighborhood Watch volunteers for putting on such fantastic National Night Out events last month. If your neighborhood didn’t have an event, I encourage you to be the change you want to see and join Neighborhood Watch as a Block Captain for your neighborhood. It is a great way for the community to stay connected and enhance the safety of everyone, so call the Police Department at 720.652.4222 for more information.

Adams Bank & Trust

Names Chris Rymes as New Retail Branch Manager

By Jan Sciacca Chris Rymes, age 31, has been named Retail Branch Manager of the Firestone branch of Adams Bank & Trust, filling the opening left by Jennifer Breitenfeldt who recently moved to the west coast. Chris Rymes, pronounced Rye-mas, has been in the banking industry since 2006. He’s excited to join the AB&T team because of the bank’s 98-year reputation of being family owned and a true community bank. The day I met Chris, he’d been in Firestone a week and a half, but was already blessing patrons and the community as a whole by hosting an appreciation barbecue in the bank parking lot. At the barbecue, I met a couple from Frederick who had been in the area eight years but decided six months ago to support a community bank and transferred their resources to Adams Bank & Trust. Chad Adams, President and fourth generation namesake of the bank who lives in Ogallala, NE, was also in attendance, rolling up his sleeves to help and thank the residents of the area for their support. On a personal note, Chris has a twelve year-old daughter, Molly, who is his pride and joy. In addition to spending time with Molly, Chris admits to being a sports fanatic, as well as enjoying camping and fishing. Chris would like to share news regarding a new, premier rate CD special that Adams Bank & Trust is currently offering. Full details can be found in the bank’s ad on page 9, or by visiting abtbank.com or by stopping into the Firestone Branch at 8308 Colorado Boulevard.

Community Connections at the Frederick Market & Downtown Sounds Concert

September 11th is an important day in American history and to honor that, the Frederick Market is putting on a special event to bring residents and community groups together in Crist Park from 4-8pm. Not only will market visitors be able to get all the goods and food they’re used to but they will be able to find out about and connect with charities, community groups, churches and other resources in the area. There will also be live music from the Mile High 101 Rock Band, made up of active military members from 6-8pm in the gazebo. Come on out and be a part of this wonderful community event by getting connected.

different? What’s different is the thoroughness and gentleness of the exam, starting with my hygienist, Rita, and completed by the assessment and education of Dr. Marogil. The technology used was more modern than I was accustomed to and showed everything! In addition to traditional x-rays that can be viewed by patient and doctor alike, this office is equipped with cameras that showed every detail in my mouth on a large flat screen monitor. I learned so much from Dr. Marogil! He explained everything from the basics of why flossing is just as important, if not more so, than brushing and explained why flossing needed to be done twice daily instead of occasionally. Yes, I’ve heard that I needed to floss before but “old” parental advice runs deep. As a child, my parents both had dentures and there was no dental floss in the house. I always thought it was a gimmick. I wonder how many others there are like me. I always thought a crown was good for the life of the person or for a very long time. I learned that even dental insurance companies recognize the life of a crown as five years. I had no idea! My crowns range from 5-34 years old. I learned that periodontal disease never goes away but one’s condition can be improved with lifestyle changes. Dr. Marogil gently explained what

had always appeared to be a goofy numbering system when referring to the receding of my gums. If you’re still “with me” in this article, you must be thinking that it’s more of the same for me. On the contrary, I am thrilled someone told me how things really are and gave me a guideline of what to do next. Dr. Marogil instills hope. Is my mouth a mess? Yes. Are there worse cases? Yes. Is there a treatment plan? Yes. Dr. Marogil is a full service dental practice that I believe sets the standard for exceptional dental care. I wish I had found someone like him thirty years ago but at least I found him now. I lament that my kids didn’t experience the care of Dr. Marogil. What a blessing he must be to educate kids as to the “why” of their hygiene routine. Dr. Marogil is amazingly thorough. A story was shared with me of a patient who was having trouble with an ongoing infection. She ended up going to a surgeon for sinus surgery. After a suitable recovery time, she was still suffering and came to Dr. Marogil. He immediately discovered her problem was tooth-related. It’s unfortunate for her that

she didn’t start with Dr. Marogil. The best analogy I can think of that correlates to why someone would want to go to Marogil Dentistry is like that of a good and honest mechanic, one which we all would love to have. A good and honest mechanic will tell you the state of your aging car and what expenses you can expect at different upcoming intervals. Some of us don’t want to know that. We just want our cars fixed. But to have a knowledgeable mechanic give us a full disclosure of when it is wise to repair or wise not to, is priceless. Knowledge is power. Dr. Hani Marogil has been practicing dentistry since 1995 and received his Doctor of Dental Medicine from the University of Pittsburgh. He regularly attends continuing education courses to provide his patients with the most up-to-date procedures. Dr. Marogil completed training at the American Academy of Facial Esthetics and is certified to offer botox and juvederm dermal fillers in the convenience and comfort of his dental office. Originally Dr. Marogil and his wife

Doris, (left photo, Doris on right) who is also a CPA, came to Colorado because Doris received a scholarship for a master’s tax program. The couple stayed and called Colorado home. Dr. Marogil also owns a dentistry practice in Broomfield. He made his first visit to Frederick three years ago when his daughter was a cheerleader for Holy Family High School. Her squad was invited to participate in the Miner’s Day Parade so the family came to watch her and to see where Frederick was. They liked the community and the small town atmosphere. About six months later, Dr. Marogil received a phone call from a broker informing him of a dental practice in Frederick being for sale. He seized the opportunity and then started an extensive remodeling/updating of the 630 Main Street, Suite B location. Dr. Marogil is in his Frederick office Tuesdays and Thursdays and can be reached at 303.833.5500. His Broomfield office is located at 340 East 1st Ave., Ste 202 and has a phone number of 303.466.4646. His website is www.marogildentistry.com. His monthly ad and offer that I took advantage of is located on page 7.

Area Growth Spurs New State Farm Agency in Firestone

Vol. 15, Issue 9

Malyka and Isaac are “high school sweet-hearts” who have been blessed with three amazing little boys. There is never a dull moment in the Korgan household. In addition the Korgans have two dogs, a cat and 11 chickens. Life is busy but Malyka loves working in her yard and is always ready for a good competitive game of volleyball. Malyka encourages readers to come to her office anytime for a free quote, a cup of coffee, and a gift for stopping by to say hello. She wants readers to be aware of the benefits of having a local agent who is available to help them recover from the unexpected and realize their dreams. She loves that she can help people save money and protect their futures. A visual of why Malyka loves being in this community is seeing Justice fly out of the front door of the office yelling at a friend that she saw in the parking lot. It was refreshing and fun to see people that haven’t seen each other in a long time, catch up and share a laugh or two. Malyka and her team can be reached at 11078 Cimarron St., Unit D, Firestone. Contact information is 720.204.6817 and teamkorgan.com.

By Jan Sciacca Malyka Korgan, a resident that was born and raised in this community, is excited that State Farm recruited her to open a new agency in Firestone. Malyka (pronounced Ma-lie-kuh) jokes that she grew up in State Farm. Her first corporate job for State Farm was as a customer service representative in the claims department in Greeley. At the time her goal was to work at State Farm just long enough to get through college. She thought it was temporary employment. Little did she know that she would fall in love with the company and make a career and a life in helping people recover from the unexpected through insurance. Sixteen years later, after spending time consulting for State Farm agents, Malyka decided she wanted to become a State Farm agent. State Farm admits there are many great State Farm agents in the area but another one was needed to keep up with the positive growth in the area. So Malyka Korgan State Farm began in July 2014. “This is a dream come true to open a small business and help the people in an area that I am proud to call home. There is extra gratification knowing that I am contributing to a strong economy and growth in the community that I live in,” Malyka beams. Then she continues, “My team and I serve all Colorado residents. We specialize in auto, home and life insurance, risk management and insurance for small businesses and financial services for all.” Malyka has a great start to her “‘dream team.” Justice Bobier, Jada Schafer and Isaac Korgan are not only experts at what they do but they 14694 Orchard Pkwy • Ste. 220 are also family. “Working with family is extremely rewarding as we Westminster • 80023 can share in each other’s successes, see each other grow and lean on Each Office Independently Owned & Operated each other when we need some encouragement.” Justice, Jada and Malyka grew up on a family-owned dairy just 5 miles east of Firestone. Liberty is the only sister missing from the day-to-day transactions in the office but she is often sought for her creative eye when it comes to office set up and décor. Isaac, Malyka’s husband, handles all of her field work which he loves, because it entails meeting with customers and driving in the gorgeous countryside.

Painting Ceilings

Most ceilings are white, yet they don’t have to be. A ceiling painted in a color other than white can enhance and change the look of a room. Ceilings are usually painted in ‘ceiling white’ to brighten a room and make it seem larger. Paint with a flat or matte sheen will be used to diminish imperfections and to cut down on too much light reflection. Using a semi-gloss, satin or even an eggshell sheen can be distracting and produce undesirable shading and glare. The general rules are that white ceilings give an illusion of depth and dark ceilings the opposite, which would have us conclude that rooms with 8 foot walls should have white or light ceilings and ceilings with 10 to 12 foot walls or taller can go darker. If you have light walls painting your ceiling one shade lighter than the walls is a great look giving your room a more intimate feeling. If your walls are on the dark side a bright white ceiling can provide a great contrast. But using the lightest color on the color chip keeps your ceiling light while keeping it in the same color family. And it will still look white, dramatic and stylish. If there is crown molding in your room, painting your ceiling a different color than the molding will accentuate it. Cove ceiling and tray ceilings are often painted with more than one color for a unique look. Keep in mind that changing the color of your ceiling can greatly affect the amount of light in the room so we need to take into consideration the lighting: natural from the windows and artificial from your lamps and light fixtures. So should you go light or dark? It’s really a personal preference. For more information on your painting project, call Tim at Blue Parrot Painting at 303.678.8442 or visit www.blueparrotpainting.com.

Submitted by Lynn Web & Dave Linscott With the building at 114 8th Street in Dacono for sale, we are saying good-bye and thank you to the Dacono community. This building has been home to LSI Computer Services and other companies for over 10 years. The realtors helping us with the sale are Ken Voss and Ken Kanemoto of Re/Max Traditions at 303-772-7777. When LSI needed to expand from its original location in Evanston, we found the perfect location in Dacono. Not only was it highly visible from both Highway 52 and CR 13 but also more than 14,000 cars travel the road daily, giving our business fantastic exposure. The building was completely remodeled with HVAC and all new electrical that includes an emergency power backup system. On our opening day we invited the Tri Town community to join us for live band with Kelly J., food, beer, and soft drinks. 8th Street was closed and all the businesses participated. Our thanks to the people that helped make that day possible. The planning stages of the building renovation was made possible with the assistance of the great staff at Dacono City Hall, Police and Fire departments. Thank you all for your help and support. We became a part of a very special community. The building was used as a drop off point for Salvation Army Food Bank and Toys for Tots. We have special memories of riding the sleigh with Santa to deliver toys to the children accompanied by fire trucks and police cars to light the way for the Santa Cop program. We miss being a business part of your town and want to thank each one of you who helped to support our business and make it a success. I know the next building owners will be welcomed and will become a part of a great community. Sadly we say good-bye.

Military Honor Flight Sunday, September 14th

The “Mile of Smiles” Lineup begins 8:15 am In front of Frederick-Firestone Fire Station 2, I-25 West Frontage Road – by the helipad Our Veterans are counting on us again to cheer them on as they pass by in the motorcade. Let’s show our support and thank them for what they’ve given us. A few minutes of your time on a Sunday morning for a lifetime of freedom! The Carbon Valley community continues to build a strong reputation within the Northern Colorado Honor Flight organization with the increase of supporters lined up to pay homage to the Veterans. Escorted by the Colorado State Patrol, Weld & Larimer County Sheriff vehicles, dozens of American Legion Riders and Patriot Guard motorcycles, the bus loads of Veterans are en route to DIA to board a charter flight to Washington, DC to visit their war memorials. Show up and show your support! VFW Post 9741 will host a Veteran Reception immediately following the Honor Flight. It will be held at the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District’s Business & Education Center building just across the parking lot to the north of the helipad where we gather for the lineup. Water, coffee and donuts will be provided. This is a great opportunity for Veterans to meet each other and share their stories. Please help spread the word. September 14th marks the 200th anniversary of our National Anthem. The Star Spangled Banner was written by Francis Scott Key in the early morning hours of September 14, 1814. Transform Your Workouts with this One Move

There are three main reasons for exercising: improving your health (particularly cardiovascular), building lean muscle, and to lose weight/burn off excess fat. Most traditional exercises only meet one or two of these reasons, but there is a way to improve exercise with just a slight variation. This one move can transform most exercises to meet all three reasons stated above. There are many different ways to make the same exercise more effective and challenging, but the key to changing the same exercise isn’t about recruiting different muscle groups. It’s about the intensity of that exercise, without having to do more reps or increase the weights. When you increase the intensity of an exercise you'll get more calorie and fat burning during and long after you've stopped exercising. So what is the one simple move that you can add to any exercise that completely changes the intensity of the exercise? They're called isometric holds, which will ramp up the intensity of any exercise you do. If you’ve ever tried to hold an isometric hold for 20-30 seconds, you know how challenging it can be. For example, take the push-up. It's easy to go up and down quickly many times over, but change the exercise up to do 10 reps up and down, then hold for 20 seconds, do 10 more reps up and down and hold for another 20 seconds. You'll see how just doing the isometric hold in between reps will increase the intensity of the exercise tenfold. You can use this same rep/hold pattern with almost any exercise you do, lunges, squats, burpees, the list goes on and on. The one drawback to isometric holds is that it gives you a feeling that you're not working out as hard as you would if you were constantly moving (even though you are working out very hard, it's a mental thing), but on the plus side, it is a lot easier on your joints. Give this a try during your next workout session and see how combining a simple isometric hold can raise the intensity of even the most basic functional exercises. If you're not sure where to start with exercising and need help with a fitness and nutrition plan, I can help. ITheyAMAREZOMBIE Coming! OCTOBER 26!

The American Legion Auxiliary #1985 in Firestone thanks everyone for a great turnout on Saturday, August 23 for our major fund raiser for scholarships. The day started off with the car show and some very cool vehicles and some "intresting" ones as well. First place in the Classic Division went to Leo Martinez, Jr. ; Muscle Car/Custom - Tom Calvo; Hot Rod - Lonnie Garza; Truck - Bill and Dixie Conway; and Motorcyle - Mike McMillan. The People's Choice was awarded to Tom Calvo. Thanks to judges, Larry Anderson and Rick Dominguez and congratulations to all and also all the participants and "Thank you", volunteers for all your hard work. This was followed by a live auction prior to the dance with some great old timey "artifacts" and fun stuff. "Auctioneer" Max Martinez, assisted by Cindy Martinez and Alan Conway made it exciting and a lot of fun. Following the auction, great 50's/60's music was provided by Martinez and Company. We thank all those that made this event so successful as we continue in our program to provide scholarships to our local Frederick High School graduates. Thanks to all our members, famlies, friends and communities for their support.

Proceeds from the M.A.C.C. Chili Cook Off will be donated to Isaac’s (Crane) Fund On Tuesday, June 10, Isaac suffered an unresponsive episode. His daddy, was able to revived him. Jenna and Jeremiah (his parents) took Isaac to Children’s Hospital where he was diagnosed with Aspiration Pneumonia. He was then admitted to the PICU. Testing began to find the cause of Isaac’s low muscle tone, present since birth. Less than a week later, Jenna and Jeremiah were given the devastating news that Isaac has Spinal Muscular Atrophy Type 1. His muscles will continue to atrophy until he passes away. His parents have been told that Isaac has months to possibly a year. Doctors say he is on the weaker end of Type 1, which is the most severe. The Crane Family, parents Jenna and Jeremiah, big sister Natalie and Isaac live in the Town of Mead. Please help us support the Crane family, by attending the M.A.C.C. Firestone Partners with The Lassy Project to Keep Kids Safe

The Lassy Project Equips Residents with the Tools They Need to Prevent Child Abductions Firestone police, Town staff and the Board of Trustees are getting involved with The Lassy Project, a movement to locate missing children and prevent child abductions. The Lassy Project is a free smartphone app that helps prevent child abductions. The Lassy Project (www.thelassyproject.com) is a free smartphone app that allows parents to set up a child’s profile that includes a photo and physical description. Then they establish safe places the child has permission to be, such as the park, school, home or friends’ houses. Parents can even establish routes the child uses to travel to those places. Through a patented combination of GPS, SMS and crowd-sourcing technology, the app immediately alerts parents via text message if their child deviates from their usual routes or locations. And, if a child is missing, the app puts the power in parent’s hands by providing them the ability to press a button and mobilize hundreds of neighbors and community members in seconds to help through what is called the Lassy Village. In this collaborative project, the Town of Firestone and Firestone Police Department is helping to enroll as many members of the Firestone community as possible into the Village – including parents, community members, first responders and local businesses. The goal is to grow the Lassy Village of Firestone as large as possible. To join the village, simply download and register the Lassy Project app from the app store. “Getting a message out in seconds to hundreds of individuals right near the area could make the difference between finding the child and not finding the child,” said John Guydon, co-founder of

The Lassy Project. “We are honored to be supported by the Firestone Police Department and look forward to working with them to grow the Lassy Village in their community. The bigger the Village, the safer the kids. We are grateful that Firestone embraced this vision for their community.” Right now the application is limited to smart phones, but the Lassy Project is working on offering parents wristbands or clips with GPS in them for a fee for children who do not have phones. Firestone School Resource Officer Luke Dunker has been helping to promote the free app through all Firestone schools. “The Lassy Project is an easy way for the community to help law enforcement and its neighbors through an easy and free smartphone app. In less than five minutes, anyone can download and register the app, which could mean the safe return of a child to their parents. We’re excited to partner with The Lassy Project to spread the word and get everyone in our community registered.” About The Lassy Project The Lassy Project is a free smartphone app that allows parents to create different routes that their kids commonly take such as walking to school. If the child strays from the designated path then an alert is immediately sent to the parent’s phone via text message. The parent can then choose to call the child and investigate. If the child is safe, the parent can dismiss the alert. But if there is a problem and the child goes missing, the parent can push a single button to activate the most powerful search and rescue team on the planet - The Lassy Village. This is a group of local community members and other parents who will receive an alert to begin search efforts within seconds near the child's last known location. To help make The Lassy Project successful, join the Lassy Village by downloading and registering the free smart phone application, to ensure that you are alerted when a child goes missing in your area. My Freedom Does Not Belong To Me: What Does Christian Freedom Look Like

Throughout my life there were many things that I truly did not understand to be right. People pressed these opinions upon me that they were right...but when thinking through them...I came to the conclusion, it was not a truth that they were trying to impress upon me, but rather a standard that they themselves created for other people to follow. Not only have I been frustrated by these things, but I must say I know many people who have also been frustrated with them...ultimately turning their back not just on those people, but God Himself! This has discouraged and frustrated me to see these people fall out due to other “Christians” who claim to be godly examples but are making God and their freedom what they think it should look like, rather than what the Bible teaches. They are making people fall under their jurisdiction of what a godly life looks like. Ultimately making those people fall under a bondage rather than True Freedom that we have in Christ! One side would push their standards on you, but there is another side as well. That side says that, “You can do whatever you want to as long as you do not hurt yourself or anyone else! Why because I have Christian Liberty.” This is also a false teaching. It is a false philosophy and yet it plagues the Christian culture all around the world. This is also a self proclaimed freedom. This however also brings bondage and typically it is usually one of lust and self pleasure. Galatians 5:1 says, “For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery.” There is only one True Freedom. It is freedom as a Christian that does not bring bondage. It is a pure freedom. It is one that brings a peace that surpasses all of my own understanding! That freedom only comes through relying in Christ. It is in Him and Through Him. We obtain this understanding through looking through understanding more of who Christ is! It is not something that happens by accident. It is intentional. It is on purpose! One will only experience this peace and freedom when they intentionally pursue the peace that Christ wants to give them. Christ is that foundation of peace! Pastor Jason Kokenzie would like to invite you to attend services at Firestone Baptist Church. The church meets at Carbon Valley Academy, 4040 Coriolis Way Frederick, CO 80504. Sunday School 9:00AM and Morning Worship 10:00AM. Wednesday Bible Study meets at 142 6th st Frederick Unit 1 at 7PM. Contact information: FirestoneBaptist.com / 303 736 9959.

Carbon Valley medical practice moves from Firestone to Frederick

North Vista Medical Center, a physician-owned family medicine and primary care services provider, this month moved from its office location in Firestone to the new Indian Peaks Medical Center, a service of Longmont Untied Hospital, in Frederick. One of three North Vista Medical Center (NVMC) locations sprinkled across the Colorado Front Range, the newly built state-of-the-art facility boasts nearly 3,000 square feet of office space for its team of five physicians, a physician assistant and support staff. In addition to increasing the physical size of the practice, being part of this comprehensive medical complex gives NVMC patients greater access to a host of ancillary support services, including medical imaging and laboratory services. “The new Frederick office is only about five minutes from our previous facility, but the added convenience and accessibility it offers enhances our ability to fulfill our mission of caring for and coaching patients to optimal health,” said Clint Flanagan, MD, a board-certified family medicine physician and co-founder of NVMC. Flanagan and fellow NVMC co-founder David Tusek, MD, also board-certified in family medicine, together have been serving residents in the Carbon Valley communities of Dacono, Frederick and Firestone for a decade. Ensuring at least another 10 years of dedicated service, NVMC’s lease agreement with Longmont United Hospital keeps the practice at Indian Peaks Medical Center through 2024, with the option to renew the agreement for an additional 10 years. “The fact that Longmont United Hospital extended such a generous invitation to be part of this expansive medical plaza is a testament to our team’s commitment to delivering a meaningful patient experience,” noted Tusek. NVMC offers a wide range of patient care services, including: acute care and chronic disease management; allergy testing and treatment; bioidentical hormone replacement therapy; dermatology; gynecology; mental health; treatment of sprains, lacerations and broken bones; weight management; and preventive health care. The Indian Peaks Medical Center office serves as the new operational headquarters for all three NVMC locations as well as Nextera Healthcare, a direct primary care company founded, owned and operated by Flanagan and Tusek. NVMC accepts most major medical insurance. In addition, patients with or without insurance can take advantage of direct primary care services through Nextera Healthcare. NVMC office hours are 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday; Saturday from 9 a.m. to noon. Same-day appointments are available in most cases. To make an appointment at the new NVMC Indian Peaks Medical Center location at 4943 Hwy 52, Suite 240 in Frederick, Colo., call (303) 501-2600 or visit www.NorthVistaMedical. com to schedule an appointment online.

The Fight Against ALS Continues: The Ice Bucket Challenge

By Al Jacobson To this day I have not seen the classic film “Pride of the Yankees,” starring Gary Gooper as Lou Gehrig. The film came out in the same year I was born, 1942. America had just entered the Second World War. I think the spirit of Lou Gehrig, as portrayed by Gary Cooper, inspired the American people in those dark days. Like most of you, I have seen the scene where Gary Cooper reproduces Gehrig’s farewell at Yankee Stadium. The touching statements and the other worldly echo from the walls of the stadium are something no one could ever forget. Lou Gehrig had died only a few days before his 38th birthday, the year before the film came out from a disease called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). For better or worse, the disease has taken on his name, and is commonly called Lou Gehrig’s Disease. What is it? Per the ALS Association, it is a progressive Di Letkomiller's Challenge neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. To help those with ALS here in Colorado, there is The ALS Association Rocky Mountain Chapter. On their website, they state that “during all of this, we are here to support the person who has ALS, but also the community around them – family members, friends, co-workers and more.” Why mention that here? I usually write about either something political or something local. But, it is quite likely this tragic illness is afflicting our fellow citizens. While looking at the Colorado ALS Association, I saw a post for what is called the “Ice Bucket Challenge.” And, this has become a big story for politicians and other high-profile people who are doused with buckets of ice so as to bring more attention to the fight against ALS. On Aug. 20, Steve/Karen Clark's Challenge former president George W. Bush was doused with a bucket of ice by his wife while writing a check to ALS Foundation. So have other politicians been doused with buckets of ice. New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie was doused with a bucket of ice on Aug. 12. So, too has Gov. Bobby Jindal of Louisiana. Even Bill Gates was doused with a bucket of ice. [So far this challenge has raised over $88 million. According to ALS Association on August 26, 2014.] This is obviously to raise money for research into the causes and a cure for ALS. And what have we learned since 1942? Well, it seems that ALS is primarily an adult disease. It strikes between the ages of 40 and 70, though like in the case of Lou Gehrig it will occasionally strike someone younger and even children. Although my rather cursory research tells me there is neither a treatment or a cure for ALS, the ALS Association has had some recent breakthroughs that could make ALS a thing of the past. I learned that 20 percent of cases of ALS are genetic, and in March 2010, Isis Pharmaceuticals Inc. initiated a study of a new drug in patients with an inherited ALS. In September 2011 they announced that, they have found a genetic abnormality that, according to their researchers, is the most common cause of ALS. This progress is good, but naturally, until any disease is cured, the fight continues. Now, I have never known how many people read this column. And, to tell the truth, I never wanted to know. And, I don’t want the paper to know either. After all, it might turn out that the number is no more than my close relatives. But, not to be outdone by Bill Gates or George W. Bush, I will take the ice bucket challenge myself. This is it: If 20 or more people reading this column will pledge $5 or more, each, to the ALS Association, I will, on Monday, Sept. 8, be doused with a bucket of ice, regardless of the weather. That’s it. Love this column or hate it, I’m counting on all of you. Al Jacobson is a Commerce City homeowner. He writes children’s stories.

HEALTHY

Back to the Grind

September is usually the time of year that we “start” to have a sense of schedule. It is a new beginning for kids starting school which translates to a new beginning for mom and dad. It is the end of summer and the beginning of fall. Fall is a time of refocus not only on school matters, but body matters. I tend to get microscopically focused on nutrition and exercise during the beginning of fall. I start embracing the idea of a rigid schedule and following through with my plans and goals that I have set for myself. Fall is a great time of year to start a new program. It is the precursor to the holiday hiatus and the lead up to the spring break bathing suit dilemma. Starting a new program in the fall can either make or break you for your goals and dreams for the new summer body that you been thinking of. Fall is a great time to head outdoors for some biking or running. It is a perfect time to team up with a friend or family member to run a 5K or hit the weight room. Instead of waiting until January 1st to start your program, why not start now while the weather is still good and while there is still time to make a difference in 2014. Every day that you wait to jump on the fitness band wagon is another day you will be wishing you could change your health, energy, appearance, and confidence. So go ahead and make the commitment to change now! I can help! I offer one-on-one tailored training to help you learn your way around the gym. I also provide sound nutritional advice, meal planning and supplement advice. So what are you waiting on? Call me! ~Shelly N. Handout from the office of Dr. King: Warming Socks

People often ask me what they can do to nip a cold in the bud before it becomes full blown. In addition to lots of water, plenty of rest and a good attitude, you can use a naturopathic hydrotherapy treatment called warming socks. Ingredients: Pair of clean, cotton socks Pair of clean, dry, thick wool socks Water Instructions: Just before bed… Thoroughly wet a pair of cotton workout socks with cold water. Wring out well so no water is dripping from the socks (for the heroic, put wet socks in the freezer for a minute or two) Put on the clammy, cold, cotton socks.

Put the thick wool socks over the top of the wet cotton socks so that the wet cotton socks are completely covered. Go to bed and get a good night’s sleep. In the morning, the cotton socks should be dry. Use for a night or two when you start feeling the onset of a cold or flu Why it works: In response to the cold clammy socks, the body increases blood circulation to “warm” the socks bringing them to the same temperature as your body. This mimics aspects of a fever that stimulate blood and lymph flow. Increase blood and lymph flow assist in killing bacteria and viruses trying to catch hold and cause illness. Anyone and everyone can do warming socks. It is safe and effective for all ages and grades of illness. Essential Oils for Things that Bug You around the House

by David Stewart, Ph.D., R.A. Among the many chemicals in our industrial environment that get into our systems and make us sick are the pesticides we use in our homes. We use them because they are toxic to the creatures that bug us, but they are also toxic to us. Sometimes the toxicity is immediately apparent -- we get a headache, get sick or feel nauseous from the fumes or other contact. Sometimes the toxicity is subtle and can accumulate, resulting in chronic complaints and disorders (including allergies, cancer and miscarriages) that can be serious and even deadly over time. Sometimes we even put poisons on our pets to deal with ticks and fleas, not realizing that these substances are not healthy for us or our animals. And how do you use them? One way is to get a pistol-grip squirt bottle. Mix a few drops of the oil with some water, shake it up, and start firing. If you have bugs on your plants, like aphids on your roses, you can squirt the leaves and drive the bugs away with no harm to your plant. You can do the same with the other pests. For ants, you can smear a line of peppermint or spearmint across your kitchen counter or floor and the ants won’t cross it. If you already have a line of ants invading your house, just draw a line of oil across them and they will turn back. It is fun to watch. And as for flies, you can knock them dead right out of the air with one shot from your pistol grip. Firestone Cultural Committee Partners with CV Regional Library to Present Firestone Art & Music Show In October

The Firestone Cultural Committee is excited to partner with the Carbon Valley Regional Library once again to host the second Firestone Art & Music Show in October 2014. The show will highlight artists from the communities of Firestone, Frederick, Dacono and Mead. A reception is set for Oct. 11 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Carbon Valley Regional Library, 7 Park Ave., Firestone. The reception is a great time for artists to visit with guests, meet other artists, listen to live music by regional musicians Kelly Aspen and Branden Sipes, enjoy refreshments and take part in this special event. The call for entries is now open as artists are welcome to apply for admission into the show by filling out the application online at www.ci.firestone.co.us/ FirestoneArtMusicShow or obtaining the application at Town Hall, 151 Grant Ave. Types of artwork that will be displayed include, but are not limited to, paintings, drawings, sculptures, jewelry, carvings and metalwork. Artists 14 and older may submit to the exhibit. Artists will be limited to two pieces each with the exception of artists displaying items in the display cases like jewelry. New to the reception this fall is the addition of children’s activities and live art demonstrations. The Cultural Committee is excited to partner with Home Depot to offer children’s activities during the 1 to 4 p.m. event where kids can express their creativity. In addition, two library meeting rooms will be available for live art demonstrations during the show. The committee envisions having artists do demonstrations of paintings or drawings so that guests can see them at work. Artists interested in being considered for a live art demonstration should select that option on the application.

Firestone Plans for Gateway Project in 2015

By year end the design will be complete for the Firestone Gateway Project which will include full build out of curb and gutter, center median islands, sidewalks, landscaping and aesthetics on Firestone Boulevard from the Frontage Road to Bailey Street creating a true entrance way to the community. Town Engineer Dave Lindsay expects bidding to take place in February 2015 and construction beginning in the spring. The Firestone Gateway Project is estimated to cost approximately $3 million, which will be funded specifically through the one cent sales tax increase passed by voters last fall. However, the Town has recently submitted a Department of Local Affairs (DOLA) grant application seeking $1.3 million in funds toward the project. The Town anticipates grants to be awarded in early 2015. DOLA funds are derived from oil, gas, carbon dioxide, coal and metals extracted in Colorado. The program is designed to offset impacts of the energy industry on local governments. As part of the Gateway Project, Firestone hopes to partner with two additional entities to make improvements near Interstate 25 and the Frontage Road. First, the developers of the Firestone City Centre plan to make additional required improvements along the Frontage Road as part of their overall development plan. The developers believe that there is a benefit to have the work completed with the Town’s Gateway Project to allow for project wide efficiencies and savings. And second, the Town has been working with the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) to complete repairs to the medians at the intersection of I-25 and the Frontage Road. In addition to the Gateway Project, other projects planned for 2015 include: Sable Avenue Sidewalk - A new sidewalk will be added along the south side of Sable

Avenue from Birch Street to Colorado Boulevard making an important and needed safe trail connection. The new sidewalk will be paid through the sales tax increase. Colorado Boulevard Rehabilitation - Throughout the winter of 2015 and before spring water demands the Last Chance Ditch Culvert will be replaced utilizing Impact Fee funding. Then, beginning next summer, Colorado Boulevard will be rehabilitated between Mountain Shadows Boulevard and Zinnia (CR 26). The street rehabilitation project will be paid through the sales tax increase.

Alley Rumblers Car Club Hosts Food Drive for Carbon Valley Help Center

At a July 19 Car Show hosted by the Alley Rumblers, a Carbon Valley hot rod club, the club raised more than $500 in donations and 100 pounds of food to benefit the Carbon Valley Help Center. Carbon Valley Help Center President Fred Skates said, “This was a very generous group of fine people who were so pleasant and kind to the Help Center. It’s wonderful to see local individuals and organizations giving back to our organization in this manner.” Several members of the Help Center were present at the car show to help, as well as a member of the Frederick Youth Advisory Commission who helped packed the food into boxes. Founded in 2013, the Carbon Valley Help Center is a 501(c)3 focused on helping people in immediate need move toward self sufficiency by unifying Carbon Valley resources. Located at 150 Buchanan Ave. in Firestone, the center is open Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with appointments recommended. For more information about the Help Center, call 303-833-6626, visit www.carbonvalleyhelpcenter.org or email info@carbonvalleyhelpcenter.org.

September is “Life Insurance Awareness” Month

September is “Life Insurance Awareness” month, and you will be seeing many different companies and receiving e-mails offering various products from Industry Standard Term insurance to Whole Life / Cash Value insurance. If you’ve worked with me, you already know how bad these products are. This IS, however, a great time to reassess your life insurance needs; and to make sure you have proper coverage. Think about it – you shop out and compare our homeowners / renters / auto insurance rates annually before you renew (or at least you should be); you get your cars inspected every 1 to 2 years; you even get physicals and dental check-ups annually. But when was the last time you checked your Life Insurance needs? The obvious reasons to get a check-up is if you currently have NO Life Insurance protection; you only have Group Term Insurance through your employer; or you have Cash Value insurance (Whole Life / Variable Life / Universal Life, etc.) But consider what life events may have occurred in the past year or so to you and your family? For example: -You got married or divorced -A birth or death in your immediate family -You bought or sold a home -You started a business or are self-employed -You changed jobs or were downsized / laid off -You are now supporting aging parents -You are in the early stages of retirement planning -You had a change in your personal finances You might even have an older, traditional Term Insurance policy, but is it still adequate? Not all Term Insurance is equal; and newer Term Insurance provides even more benefits (and many times at a lesser cost). Does your policy provide you with: • A fixed, level premium for the duration of your policy? • An adequate income stream to support your spouse or your children in case you die early? • A Chronic Illness provision in case you encounter a Long Term Care situation? • A Critical Illness provision in case you encounter a major health issue? If any of these scenarios pertain to you, then we definitely need to review your protection coverage. Give me a call or an e-mail and let’s discuss your particular needs. I will give you a no-cost; noobligation quote on what proper coverage for you and your family looks like. For more info contact Ron Rogers of Firestone at 720.236.5771 – cell or 720.278.7710 – office or email at ron@freedomforliving.com and visit www. FreedomForLiving.com

Carbon Valley Help Center Empty Bowls Project

Save the Date – November 22, 2014 Carbon Valley Help Center is excited to be hosting the “First Annual Empty Bowls Project.” We are located in Firestone, CO and was established in 2012 with the following mission: "To help people in immediate need move toward self-sufficiency by unifying Carbon Valley resources." At the event for a modest donation, attendees select a unique hand painted bowl made by a local artist or community member, and select a meal of soup, bread and dessert donated by area restaurants and caterers. They get to enjoy the meal with family and friends. The bowl is theirs to keep as a reminder of those who face hunger every day. A silent auction featuring the works of local artist will also be featured. This event will help to raise awareness of hunger and homelessness in the Carbon Valley area. All proceeds will be used to provide food and resources to the clients of the Carbon Valley Help Center. This event will be held at Frederick High School 5690 Tipple Parkway, Frederick, Colorado on Saturday, November 22, 2014 from 11:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. The Help Center is looking for volunteers and sponsors for this project. For more information regarding how you can help by volunteering or sponsoring this event visit the Carbon Valley Help Center Facebook or email us at www.carbonhelpcenter.org or info@carbonvalleyhelpcenter.org or call the Help Center at (303) 833.6626. The Carbon Valley Help Center is located at 150 Buchanan St, in Firestone, CO 80520.

SCHOOL Volleyball!

Mead High School will have a new volleyball coach this fall. To help the program, I am creating a list of interested middle school girls to compete in the Gold Crown Fall League. If your daughter is looking for a more competitive volleyball experience than recreation leagues, please contact me. Although we will be working with the Mead High School program, it is not a requirement for the player to plan on attending Mead High School. We will also be looking for coaches for the middle school volleyball teams. If you have experience playing and/or coaching competitive volleyball, please contact me. More information about the Gold Crown Volleyball League can be found at: http:// www.goldcrownfoundation.com/volleyball/leagues/fall-jr-high-league/ Scott Wilke, swilke54@comcast.net, H: 720-652-9546, C: 720-641-7014.

Carbon Valley Child Care Association

The Carbon Valley Child Care Association (CVCCA) is a network of providers in the Carbon Valley area. Our primary goal is to assist child care providers with annual training and to create a social network that they can rely on for ideas and assistance in all areas of child care. Some of the benefits of having a local association are: zz The ability to attend local meetings and trainings without having to drive to other communities after a long day working with children

zz The CVCCA will also be available to parents to get referrals for licensed child care providers in and around their area.

MATTERS

zz The CVCCA will assure referral services to all members for free. zz Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month in the Carbon Valley Library meeting room. The next meeting will be September 9th at 6:30. Come join us and meet some local providers, get some training and learn more about the association. zz September training: Sept. 9th Child Abuse and Neglect

zz CVCCA will provide guest speakers/trainings monthly who will give information that will count towards the 15 hours of continuing education child care providers need annually.

zz October training: October 14th PDIS/QRIS

zz Meetings will be held locally to accommodate providers’ work hours.

zz Yearly memberships are $30 (you will get all trainings for free, referrals for child care and meet lots of other providers!)

zz The CVCCA will assist in providing Medication Administration, Universal Precautions, First Aid, and CPR classes annually.

Wondering What to Pack for School Lunches?

zz Training is free to members. $5 for Non-members

If you have questions or would like to find out more about the association, please contact: Julia Brink at 720226-6385 or Vicki Athmann at 303-833-5022. Our website: www.carbonvalleykids.org.

Child Care in the Carbon Valley Area

Submitted by Sarah Harter, SVVSD & Frederick HEAL Can you hear it? It's the sound of lunch bags and lunchboxes being snapped open. It's the sound of peanut butter lids being screwed off and pantry doors being opened as lunches are packed every morning in homes across America. It's back to the lunchpacking grind for parents. It's an important question, as each lunch offers an opportunity to improve your child's diet. Lunchtime choices can make a big difference toward the daily and weekly totals for calories, fat, saturated fat, fiber, sugar, and sodium. According to a newly released study by Tufts University in Boston, MA; less than one-third of home packed meals met federal standards for school-served foods. "Our findings are similar to results of other studies of children's packed lunches from across the world, which have found that high-calorie packaged foods and beverages are more common than fruits, vegetables and dairy," said Kristie Hubbard, a research associate at the Friedman School of Nutrition Science and Policy at Tufts University. So how do you beat these statistics? Here are just a few quick swaps to make lunch packing an easy and healthy task: ●● Using higher-fiber, 100% whole-wheat breads to make sandwiches instead of white bread adds about 20 grams of fiber in a week's time, not to mention all the nutrients whole grains provide. ●● If you pack sliced apples in your child's lunch each day instead of a fruit roll, you'll cut the refined sugar in your child's diet by 50 grams a week, while adding some 20 grams of fiber to the weekly total. You'll also be giving your child 27% of the recommended Daily Value for vitamin C, and 15% of the Daily Value for vitamin E and potassium each day. ●● Pack 3 ounces of carrot sticks in the lunchbox instead of 2 ounces of potato chips, and your child gets 1,325 fewer snack calories each week, 95 fewer grams of fat, 30 fewer grams of saturated fat, and 10 more grams of fiber. The carrot sticks will also add 270% of the Daily Value for antioxidant vitamin A each day. ●● Pick a dependable drink. Check the label. Most kids’ drinks contain almost as much sugar per ounce as soft drinks, which could add 3 to 5 extra pounds to your child’s weight by the end of the school year. The best choices (in descending order) are: water, un-sweetened iced tea, low-fat milk or 100 percent juice.

Historic Firestone Coalition

By Betty Heath From July 20 through August 24, 17 resident families have been awarded the Beautiful Yard Award. The most recent recipients for the week of August 10 are:

Cheri and Bruce Andersen, 523 5th Street Albert and Cecilia Gutierrez, 242 Berwick

Gerry and Karen Miller, 150 Wooster;

Brian and Julie Pearce, 677 3rd Street William and Nancy Lesnick 330 Grant For the week of August 24:

Nick and Fran Parra, 319 Berwick For the week of August 17:

Juan and Ana Garcia, 332 Grant Ave

Since the Beautiful Yard Award project ends soon it has been suggested that it be held again for the most festive fall holiday yard decorations and again for the best Christmas themed decorated yards. The Coalition is organizing a ‘tour of lights’ during the first two weeks in December. Plans are being made to award prizes in at least two categories.Details will be announced in September. United Power is conducting a study to determine the cost of installing new light posts, burying power lines and other related cables from Century Link and Comcast, etc. The study includes use of LED lighting throughout Historic Firestone. LED street lights are beneficial for a number of reasons: they have a 5 year guarantee and require less maintenance, so the cost in the long term is less expensive. Funding assistance will come from United Power. However, the residents on 5th Street are still waiting for work to be done to divert water from the fields behind them from flooding their homes again. Letters were sent to the property owner seeking permission for the town to build a berm. The residents and the town staff have received affirmative letters back from the landowner, but as of September 1, the town engineer has yet to issue a work order for this to be done." The Historic Firestone Coalition meets on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. The next meeting will be on Tuesday, September 9, 2014 at 6:30. Leo Martinez serves as Moderator; April Perez is Recording Secretary. For more info (303) 210-9912.

Firestone’s Food & Flick Friday Wraps Up for Season

As people gear up for football season, Firestone’s Food & Flick Friday series wrapped up on Aug. 8, 2014, with football-themed games and Little Giants on the big screen. It was the last event of five that included a revamp of the event to feature gourmet food trucks, live music, face painting, games, snacks and a movie in the park. Musician Lara Ruggles entertained the crowd as guests dined on tasty cuisine, frozen yogurt and waffles piled high with savory toppings. Children and adults had fun playing games with the Carbon Valley Park & Recreation District and getting their faces painted. Movie sponsor Premier Members Federal Credit Union handed out water and popped up popcorn for movie guests to enjoy. Food trucks have become the latest in full-fledged mobile restaurants with seasoned chefs offering a variety of scrumptious gourmet fare. This event offered selections from Bodacious Eats, Suburban Wiener, Waffle Cakes and TCBY of Firestone. Food & Flick Fridays was presented this year by the Town of Firestone, as well as platinum and presenting sponsors Encana Oil & Gas, the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District, the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce, the Carbon Valley Consumer Report and the Carbon Valley Park & Recreation District. Movie sponsors include Encana Oil & Gas, Creative Years Learning Center, Tutor Doctor, St. Brigit Episcopal Church and Premier Members Federal Credit Union. Photos courtesy the Town of Firestone

Firestone Elected Officials Collaborate with the Carbon Valley Park & Recreation District to Assist in Master Planning

Firestone elected officials have continued to support and provide assistance to the Carbon Valley Park & Recreation District as it reorganizes its organizational structure and ongoing programming. Now Firestone elected officials have begun working with the recreation district to create a master plan for future recreational needs for the Firestone and Carbon Valley communities. In late July, the district hosted a number of community outreach meetings to begin the master planning process, including one specifically for local elected officials. Several members of the Firestone Board of Trustees and staff attended the meeting to provide insight into the plan. Key outcomes that are expected to come from the master planning were stated to include: a vision for the future; areas to maximize services; effective and efficient operations; recommendation and action plans; and a balance of needs and funding. “The world of recreation centers is changing as things evolve in society,” said Firestone Mayor Paul Sorensen to the group of meeting attendees. “While we look for the future for our needs, we also need to consider new offerings based on current trends in the recreation industry. We need to find out what the next generation of recreation facilities and programming looks like.” Ross Blackmer, the Carbon Valley Park & Recreation District Executive Director, said, “The Carbon Valley Park & Recreation District is extremely excited to have begun the Master Plan project to engage with the three communities looking towards and preparing for the future. We want to enhance the lives of residents of the Carbon Valley area while encouraging participation through play. The master plan project will be the road map to investing in the future for the residents of the District and surrounding areas.” GreenPlay, the consultant hired by the district to help with the master plan, facilitated the meeting and addressed a number of questions designed to garner feedback. Those questions included: • What are the key issues of values in the service area to make up the recreation district? • What would you like to see as an outcome of the planning process? • What do you feel the role of a special district is in providing indoor facilities, programs, parks and services? • What can the district do relative to recreation services, programming and facilities that most help your organization’s key focus? • What should the district look like moving forward in one, five and 10 years from now? Meeting attendees expressed the importance of planning for the future and how the communities will continue to grow and require additional recreational needs. Other comments made included making sure that all neighborhoods are included within the district, drawing participation from all age groups, building a realistic capital improvement plan, working through ongoing municipality Intergovernmental Agreements, determining senior programming, and building an asset spreadsheet of how the municipalities and district can work together. Sorensen added, “The district needs to be our programing specialist when it comes to recreational needs for our communities. However, while programming is the key thing they provide, the programs have to be built sustainable.” With information garnered from the outreach meetings, the district will continue to work with GreenPlay to develop a master plan to works with all of the Carbon Valley communities to grow partnerships, enhance financial accountability and increase recreational programming.

Firestone Approves Bids For Fall 2014 Paving Projects

The Firestone Board of Trustees approved roadway paving projects at its Aug. 13, 2014, meeting for a number of improvements, including the final expansion piece of Firestone Boulevard. By early September travelers of Firestone Boulevard will see roadwork in full swing to add an additional lane in each direction between Birch and Cimarron streets. The Firestone Boulevard expansion project was broken into two parts this past spring as original bids came in more than $400,000 over Town estimates. The first phase completed earlier this month was utility work which lowered a water line and extended a box culvert and storm pipe on the south side of the road. In addition to the widening of Firestone Boulevard, the Town also approved bids for three additional paving projects. They include: • Frontier Street Overlay between Sable and Pine Cone avenues – Paid through the 1 percent sales tax increase; • Park Avenue Improvements (street to library) – Paid through Street Impact Fees; and • Firestone Regional Sports Complex Parking Lot (initial lot in front of the park only) – Paid through Parks Impact Fees. Staff and elected officials reevaluated a number of roadway improvement projects this summer after bids came in higher than estimates. The increase in bids caused timeline delays of close to four months as staff has had to reevaluate projects. Town Engineer Dave Lindsay said bids are coming in an estimated 20 to 30 percent higher than Town estimates. He believes it’s because of a number of factors, including higher oil prices than a year ago. “From June 2013 to June 2014, oil prices are running an estimated 15 percent higher, which ultimately adds to the cost of road projects,” he said. Another factor contributing to higher bids is a construction labor shortage along the northern Front Range. In order for the construction industry to stay competitive, they’ve increased wages and passed those increases along to consumers like the Town. Higher bids are also due to ongoing flood reconstruction, which has kept contractors busy since last fall.

SENIOR NEWS FOR SEPTEMBER A Message from Carl

W h o are we and what have we accomplished thus far? Recently I have b e e n feeling sorry for myself. It seems at times that no matter what I do or how many different times and ways I tell people that we need to pull together and help those who are in great need in our community, the help just never seems to be there. I go to our corporate mailbox day after day and it's empty. So, we have now placed PayPal buttons on our website, still nothing. Except for an initial donation from my Vice President and myself, there have been no donations. I write letters to those who typically donate and have a heart for Seniors and those who are hurting, but receive no replies. The mailbox is still empty. I can't help but wonder if it's me......what am I doing wrong? Everyone agrees there is a need, but the help is just not there. This past Tuesday morning at our Board of Directors' meeting, I posed this question to my fellow Directors, "Do you feel that anybody out there besides us really wants this organization? Are we just wanting to help where there is no need? Or, is their truly a need for this Seniors Organization?" To a person (and to their wonderful credit), they replied, "Absolutely there is a need and despite what seems an uphill battle, we will one day fill that need far beyond peoples wildest imaginations. Yes, it is discouraging at times, but the ultimate benefit to those who need us will far outweigh the heartache. Perseverance and patience, tempered with love will win out in the end!" I could not be more proud of a very fine group of people that I believe the Lord has placed with me to accomplish this purpose. That evening, as we held our 1st Annual Board of Directors Appreciation Dinner, I had the privilege of looking around that table and considering how very lucky I am to have this wonderful group of people to work with me on this heart trip to help others. I also considered all that we have accomplished this past year. • In the past year, we completed an application for our 501(c)(3) and received approval in nearly record time; • We have established a corporate bank account; • Found a wonderful accountant to help us manage that account;

Sending a big yeehaw and thanks to our sponsors, volunteers and vendors for their dedication in presenting the first annual CO Craft Beer Roundup in Downtown Frederick held on Saturday, August 16, 4-7pm! The first annual event created by the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce, hosted over 300 attendees from the Carbon Valley area and beyond. From experienced brew tasters to families new to the beer tasting scene, all enjoyed the event, live music and food vendors. Sponsors and VIPs arrived early, at 3pm, to taste the suds and pick their favorite beer. The brewers relished the opportunity to show off their creations on the cool grass in Crist Park and are looking forward to making another stop at the Roundup in 2015. Community Bible Study

Practical Lessons on Christian Living in Today's World Join us for this 30 week life changing study of the book of DANIEL (12 weeks) and REVELATION (18 weeks). Daniel's emphasis is on God’s sovereign control of heaven and earth. Daniel's example shows us how to live a Godly life in difficult circumstances. Revelation is an exciting study in which Jesus Christ appears in all His Glory. Prophecies are examined against the backdrop of God’s overriding plan for creation since the beginning of time and on through eternity. Each Tuesday morning from 9:15-11:15 a.m. beginning September 9, 2014 thru May 5, 2015 we will meet for study and fellowship. The classes will be hosted by but not affiliated with Longs Peak United Methodist Church, 1421 Elmhurst Drive, Longmont. Men and women of all ages are encouraged to attend. There will be loving nursery care for babies and a full program for children 12 months to 6 years for those who register. The Community Bible Study class follows the school calendar and will not meet when children are out of school for holidays and Spring Break. Each week you will study the Bible at home and during class small group discussions will take place. Following the small group discussion, instruction on the same passage will be given. Registration is $25.00 for adults and $10.00 for children. Invite a friend!! For more information and to register contact Linda Parker 303651-0950.

Autumnal Equinox Service

September 21, 2014 6:00pm. This service celebrates the transition between Summer and Fall. “Equinox” is a translation of the Latin word, aequinoctium, or “equal night.” On this day, there are 12 hours each of daylight and darkness. The Earth’s axis is parallel to the Sun, so the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are illuminated equally. Sunrise occurs at 6am and sunset, at 6pm. Ancient people marked this day with both thanksgiving for the harvest and prayers for protection during the approaching time of darkness and cold. Our service will be rich with themes of abundance and God's enduring love as we celebrate this bittersweet time. As always, we will have live music and specially designed meditation areas. I've attached a flyer with the details. Please contact 303-516-0220 or our priest, Reverend Felicia SmithGraybeal, at 720353-0382, if you have questions or would like more information.

Silent Auction

September 28, 2014 (evening time to be determined) This event will be held at The Sun Rose Cafe in Longmont and proceeds will fund our Community Outreach programs. I'll provide a flyer and more details as soon as they are available. Please contact 303-516-0220 or our priest, Reverend Felicia SmithGraybeal, at 720-353-0382, if you have questions or would like more information.

David H. Osborne

Harold (Hal) Stalgren

Born June 18, 1936 in Washington D.C. Died August 5th, 2014 in Longmont, Colorado David H. Osborne passed away on August 5th, 2014 as a result of the complications of cancer. Dave was born in Washington D.C to Herbert and Sylvia Osborne on June 18, 1936. His early school years were spent in Portland, Oregon and Sacramento, CA. He was a graduate of McClatchy High School in Sacramento and University of Nevada, Reno where he earned his degree in Metallurgical Engineering and Geology. Dave served in the U.S. Navy as a C.B. (Construction Battalion). He later worked for a series of major mining companies including Newmont Mining and Molybdenum and oil companies including Chevron and Unocal. Dave was an early retiree and took up a second career as a Reserve Police Officer with the Dacono, Colorado Police Department. Early in his second career, Dave would work with patrol officers and occasionally work patrol shifts to help cover for vacations and training days. As years passed Dave would mainly perform services to citizens of Dacono, Firestone and Frederick providing Forensic Investigations for crime scenes and traffic accident investigations. This was Dave’s true passion and he loved doing this work. Over the years, while a solitary and private man, Dave became well known and well-liked by his peers and colleagues in the public service professions. Dave loved and valued the outdoors, nature and science as it related to the earth and the universe. Dave also had a deep interest in history, in particular the Civil War Era. He is survived by his brother Bob, sister-in-law, Gail both of Lincoln, California and his niece, Kari of Windsor, California and nephew, Mike of Colfax, California.

Hal Stalgren passed away August 1, 2014 surrounded by his close, loving family. Hal and his wife Karen lived in Prairie Greens for the past 13 years. He is now thought to be driving a red 1959 Ferrari Testarossa on a challenging race course somewhere in Italy. He raced in the SCCA and owned many Alpha Romeos, including his Sprint Speciale, which he lovingly restored and with which he won multiple awards. He loved driving the windy Colorado mountain roads in his many sports cars over the years. Hal was born January 22, 1934 in Denver, Colorado. He graduated from Aurora High School and then Denver University with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. Hal loved cars, history, reading, and model trains. His love of travel took him to all 50 states. Hal worked as an engineer in Detroit for Chrysler and went on to construction, sales, business ownership, and inventory control. Hal is survived by his wife of fifty three years, Karen Stalgren. His two sons, Steve and Noel Stalgren and their wives, his brother Gordon, and sister Joyce Stalgren, as well as three grandchildren, Shea, Carsten, and Eli. A memorial celebration of life was held on Saturday, August 23, 2014 at the Howe Mortuary, Longmont, CO.

May 1, 1950 ~ August 15, 2014

James “Pops” Lockhart, 64 of Longmont passed peacefully with his family at his side on August 15, 2014. He was born May 1, 1950 in Chicago, IL to Robert and Geraldine Lockhart. He lived and worked in the Chicago suburbs until moving to Colorado in 1995. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Adriane (Nelson) of Longmont, son Brett (Jenn) of Longmont, and Brad Buckles (Kristina) of Frederick. He is further survived by his brothers, Bob (Dottie) of Louisville, KY, Gerry (Sandra) of Lisle, IL, and Allen (Daryll) of Woodridge, IL. He will be missed by his wife’s extended family and many nieces and nephews of whom he was very fond. He was preceded in death by his brother Jack (Linda), his parents Robert and Geraldine, and father-in-law Donald Nelson. His greatest joy in recent years was the birth of his grandson Cameron Lockhart in January 2013, and granddaughter Taylor Buckles in February 2013. He was truly the happiest when they were with him, and he enjoyed watching them grow into toddlers. After a debilitating accident in July 1989 he is finally pain free and at peace with all of those he loved who went before him. He will be greatly missed by the family and many friends he leaves behind. A celebration of his life will be held at the family home in Longmont, on Grandparents Day, Sunday September 7, 2014 from 3:30 – 6 PM. Memorial donations may be made to Denver Children’s Hospital Aurora, CO, or the OUR Center. Share your condolences and memories at www.howemortuary.com.
