Pepper Jack’s Grille: A Place for Family Fun, Fantastic Food & Refreshment arbon Valley foodies showed up from the patio. C by the hundreds as the doors Ryan and Janel Elmore, owners opened to the all-new Pepper and parents of two sons, value family Jack’s Grille. Formerly at I25 and Hwy 52, friends, family and regulars had eagerly anticipated opening day. And they were not disappointed. Guests dined on the infamous Monte Cristo sandwich, the all new Fire Cracker Shrimp and Green Chili Mac and Cheese. They now offer a great selection of craft beers, an array of Moscow mules and many other specialty drinks. People appreciated the industrial motif, enjoyed the indoor/outdoor bar, and were awed by the spectacular sunset displays

and friends above all else and it shows in their new restaurant at 8274 Colorado Blvd., in Firestone next to Adam’s Bank & Trust. Having designed and built from the ground up, Ryan and Janel spent months determining what would reflect their highest priorities-family, fun and great food. They even stamped their hands in the concrete on the patio! Their trimmed menu is balanced nicely with long-time favorite foods and new entrees and sandwiches making it difficult to choose. Brenda said one of her favorites was the ahi tuna sandwich, “It’s seared perfectly. Tuna steaks should never be overcooked.” Families are playing the giant patio games while waiting for their meals. It’s refreshing to see parents put down their cell phones and engage with their children. I think the children benefit the most and their huge smiles prove it. While there are televisions to watch the games, Pepper Jack’s Grille is not a sports bar. “Our restaurant embodies Colorado, with outdoor activities, fresh food and a family environment,” says Ryan. “Come, unwind, watch the sunset, visit with your family or friends, enjoy the fire pit when the weather cools off….” Their motto has not changedEnter as Strangers, Leave as Friends. At Pepper Jack’s Grille, it’s easy to become friends with each person you interact with. The staff are not “just”

servers, they are our neighbors. As a side note, each staff person is working an incredible number of hours and they do appreciate your patience as they get to know the ins and outs of the new facility. Ryan and Janel are looking to hire additional staff so please spread the word. “This business truly empowers our community,” says Janel. “All but two of our employees are locals, the people who dine here, live here-so money is staying in our communities.” They are using local coffee roasters, bakeries and breweries as well. Paul Sorensen, Mayor of Firestone said, “When Pepper Jack’s closed its location on SH 52 it created a hole in the Carbon Valley community. Now that they’ve reopened at their new Firestone location the reaction from the community is amazing. This locally family-owned and operated business has given so much to our community over the years. It is a true blessing to have them back in business. Bon appétit!” “Amazing food and very friendly staff. Love the patio!” says Julia Davis, Director of the Carbon Valley Chamber. The patio is the perfect spot to enjoy a mimosa and brunch this fall. Pepper Jack’s Grille has extended breakfast hours on Saturday and Sunday, until 2pm. And are now open until 10:00 pm on Friday/Saturday and 9:00 pm the other days. As a temporary decision, they are closed on Tuesdays which gives them the opportunity to have a family day for them and their staff. Ryan and Janel have put their hearts and souls into every part of this project. Ryan shares, “This was the culmination of so many people, we could never have done this ourselves. We have been blessed by God, family, friends, and so many others who have invested in our dream. A few people they would like to mention are: • Dustin and Jody of Baker Builders • Jay Kuni • Justin and Shondra Ritter at CrossFit MHz (check out our MHz Margarita!) • Les and Karen Grote • The Town of Firestone

Above: Julia & Paul Sorensen and Julia Davis

Ryan and Janel thank all of these people plus all of you who have shown an outpouring of support. Your overwhelming response to what they’ve birthed has touched their hearts in ways they could not have imagined. They are so excited to be a part of the community again and look forward to serving you!

What’s On My Mind

Kelly Martindale, Publisher

Survival of the Fittest...Is It?

A

fter reading several articles on surviving different types of scenarios, I don’t believe it is survival of the fittest but more likely survival based on preparedness. Whether it be a bear attack or falling out of a raft in white water, the steps to survival are basically the same; Don’t panic, always start with the proper equipment, don’t fight but rather go with it...always stay calm. My cousin, Carma, went on a white water rafting trip and she said she was scared out of her wits. But with lots of prayer, she climbed into the raft and bobbed in the water until they shoved off. Fearful and tense, she forced herself to remember the directions of her guide. One thing he had promised the rafters was that if they listened to him and did as he said, he would bring them home safe; not necessarily dry but safe. She said, “Our guide made me want to do it again. He gave me directions, I logged the info and remembered it when I needed to and I trusted him.” Then she proceeded to say, “Kel, it’s the same with our lives. If we would just listen to our Guide, God the Father, and trust Him. He promises to get us home safely, not necessarily dry but safe. Every time we crashed through white water, I got very wet, drenched in fact,” she said. “It reminded me of when my mom was

diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. It nearly drowned me with sorrow,” Carma said, “like the white water trying to throw me into the raging river. In both instances, I held on to what I knew to be true.” Most of us fight life. We can’t seem to accept providence. That’s what I did for about three years. I fought, kicking and screaming. And life only got harder. The louder I screamed the harder it was to hear the directions of my Guide. I flailed. Like a person drowning, I fought my Rescuer and it nearly got me killed in the process. They say if you fight a bear, it will fight you back. If you play dead, its tendency is to leave you for dead. If you fall out of the raft in white water, you are to relax, lay on your back and float down river feet first. If you thrash around you are more likely to smash your head into a rock. Staying calm in the midst of tragedy is more easily accomplished if you have someone holding your hand and telling you it’s going to be okay. There is a tranquility that overcomes you when you know, with all your heart, that you are not alone and that you have an ally who does have your back. Isn’t that what most of us want...to be taken care of and loved and to know we are never alone? When you let Jesus in your life, that’s what you get, someone who is there through thick and thin. He’s there when you are great and when you are notso-nice to be around too. He’s the one who whispers in your ear, “Stay calm, I’m right here.” When you forget what to do in a bad situation, He reminds you. Jesus gives you the ability to be in the middle of a horrific situation and know

that, in the end, it’s all going to turn out, not necessarily perfect, but it will turn out. There is peace in that knowledge and acceptance. I’ve shared how my faith waivered for several years because of two of my four children dying. I quit turning to God in my struggles. I trusted Him less and less. Then I turned my back on Him, almost completely. I say almost because despite my failings and flailing, out of the corner of my eye, I happened to see His outstretched arm offering to help me up. And He helped me back to Him...when I needed Him most. It’s hard to believe that God would do that, take me back, after all I did to Him and against Him. But that’s who my God is...a loving God. Yes, He has rules (the Bible) I need to follow, for my own good. Yes, He punishes too; but the punishment I’ve experienced thus far is nothing compared to what I deserve. That is God’s merciful love through Jesus Christ. I am here today experiencing yet another anniversary of the death of Alisha, my nine-year-old daughter. August 7, marked twenty-six years since she died, twenty-six years since I held her hand and stroked the soft skin of her cheek. Tears stream down my face as memories wash over me. The tears are from both sorrow and thankfulness. While I miss her with every part of my being, I do know she is with her brother and they are in Heaven with our Redeemer. I also know, I will see them again. That is a confidence that can only come by being prepared.

gilent Technologies Inc. announced it has acquired 20 acres in Weld County, Colorado, on which it plans to build a pharmaceutical manufacturing facility. The expansion will enable the company to more than double its commercial manufacturing capacity for nucleic acid active pharmaceutical ingredients. “The products manufactured at this site will be used by our customers to improve the lives of patients suffering from a variety of diseases,” said Skip Thune, general manager of the company’s Nucleic

The Blue Danube

T

his past April, my husband and I traveled to Europe. We began our adventure in Budapest Hungary and ended up in Munich Germany. We arrived in Budapest, just such an amazing, historical city. It is an easy, safe city to get around. Walking and taking public transport is great. We toured both the Buda and Pest sides of the city. One is more traditional and the other the most up and coming and modern. Food was amazing and we tried the traditional “Hungarian Goulash”, different Strudels and some amazing local wines and beers. People were extremely friendly and most spoke English. We then boarded our Avalon Waterways river cruise boat for our cruise. The Avalon Visionary is an all-suite ship. The ship was great. The cabins have wall to wall panoramic windows that open to create a large open-air balcony. The intimacy of the ship (approximately 148 passengers) is what makes river cruising so popular. Food is amazing and at the evening meals, local wines and beers are served. The seating is open and not assigned so you get to meet many different and interesting people. The passengers were from all over the world from the US, Australia, Great Britain and Scandinavia. The crew speaks English and is from all over Europe. Our cruise director is from Austria, the captain from Switzerland. The cruise took us through some amazing scenery and many different ports.

We docked along the river to step out to some unusual and quaint towns with lots of history and some cities like Vienna and Passau. The excursions are included on most river cruises and include walking tours, museum visits, bike rides (on some cruises), and wine and beer tastings and, of course, like all over Europe, churches and cathedrals! The cruise took us along the Danube and through some locks along the way. There were some locks that the ship had plenty of room on each side to some that you thought we seemed to squeeze through! To watch how the locks work up close was interesting and such an amazing feat of engineering. In my next article, I will talk a little more about the destinations we visited and more experiences about river cruises along the European waterways. 2017 is fast approaching and the cruise lines are offering some amazing sales currently, so if you are considering a European River cruise, please feel free to contact me at Going Places Travel. The Carbon Valley Consumer Report—Bringing Residents Information About Area Businesses

Dear Editor...

Letter to the Editor:

In these times of politicians constantly calling for transparency in government, it is important for those of us in the realm of “politics”, albeit on a local level, to be as transparent as possible. This is why the Frederick Board of Trustees has elected to sponsor barbeques in each of our Town subdivisions – to give citizens of our Town an opportunity to converse with elected officials in an informal setting to discuss whatever it might be – good or bad – that is of importance to the residents. A recent item addressed involved the coveted “old town’s” Downtown Development Plan (a section of Frederick’s Comprehensive Plan) and the Downtown Code (a section of Frederick’s Land Use Code). Apparently, a considerable amount of mis-information has been distributed to Old Town residents and I would like to take this opportunity to set the record straight. As a nine-year veteran of the Frederick Planning Commission, who spent two years on the Frederick Historical Commission and am now a member of the Board of Trustees, I can assure our residents that preservation of Old Town is and always

has been of utmost importance to Town leaders. Both of the afore-mentioned documents were developed, after many public meetings and public hearings before the Planning Commission and the Board of Trustees, and were adopted in 2009 (seven years ago). To clarify, (1) the height limitation in the Downtown Code is 35’, unless certain elements which benefit the public at large are contained in the site plan – then, the height may be increased to 45’. Common sense dictates the higher height could not be achieved on one single family lot in Old Town. (2) In addition to certain commercial uses, the Downtown B Zone allows singlefamily detached, single-family attached and multi-family residential uses; the Downtown A Zone allows single-family attached and multi-family residential uses. Single family detached uses are, of course, grandfathered in all Downtown Zone districts. Residents of Old Town have only to check their tax records and insurance rates for the past seven years to see if these the afore-mentioned documents have had an effect on either taxes or insurance rates during that time. The Downtown Code is not a “commercial” zone district in the normal sense, but multi-use district, designed to enhance our Old Town, not to destroy it. As Board members, we are extremely proud of our professional staff. If any resident is concerned, for any reason, you may always contact members of our staff to obtain clarification or to ask questions regarding items of interest. Donna Hudziak

Area Mayor’s Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings DACONO MAYOR, JOE BAKER

 Hello Dacono; School is back in full swing so please be careful and keep a watch on the streets for more kids walking throughout our neighborhoods.  I’d like to say thank you to all of the sponsors, bands, local Joe Baker spirit distilleries and food vendors along with everyone exhibiting during the Music Festival for a great day. Thanks Val and Chris K for the preparation and let’s not forget public works for their hard work with setting everything up. This year at the festival I had the honor of presenting three Pride of Dacono awards to Emma Bustos for her inspiration, Linda Eastment for her countless hours of volunteering to the city and for being a model resident and Kevin Plain for nine dedicated years on City Council, most recently as Mayor Pro-Tem.  Amy Bruno has been our Librarian here in Dacono and has served our city in many other capacities with great pride. She’s

FIRESTONE MAYOR, PAUL SORENSEN

 School is now back in session as I’ve been enjoying my bus route for the local school district. This summer was a great break for all of our students. I even got to take Paul Sorensen part in some of the fun summer camp programs as I drove more than 100 students this summer to enjoy a beautiful summer day at the Brighton Oasis Family Aquatic Park. Some of my fondest memories growing up took place in and around a lake, river or pool. Summertime and water are certainly best of friends. Watching the students enjoy water slides and other fun water features in Brighton has made me realize that

Sadly last month Amy has moved on to a new position out of state and will be missed. Good luck Amy and thank you for an amazing nine years. https://www.facebook.com/ CarbonValleyMusicFestival/?fref=ts  This Year Colorado National Speedway has sponsored “Back to School” by donating 150 NASCAR backpacks to Quest Academy in Dacono. These backpacks are filled with activity books and were given out during Friday’s assembly at Quest 3100 Sweetgrass Pkwy, Dacono, CO 80514 Thanks Jim, Brian and Mandy. And thank you Principal Garcia for your warm welcome. http://quest. weld8.org/ http://coloradospeedway.com/  Traveling Vietnam Wall - The American Veterans Traveling Tribute Vietnam Wall is coming to Dacono from Thursday, September 15 to Sunday, September 18. Located at Furniture Row in Dacono; This 80 percent replica of the Vietnam wall is 360 feet long and includes every name from the permanent wall in Washington D.C. Don’t miss this opportunity to honor and remember our Vietnam heroes. Viewing is free to the public. Furniture Row has graciously offered their land just south of the parking lot to host this amazing opportunity to see a part of history. Please visit their website and donate to the cause. Quest uses Core Knowledge curriculum for social studies, science, music, art, and literature. These content rich programs focus on US and world history, geography, and culture. Weld County Re-8 School District has a ballot question for this November’s vote to build our permanent K-8 facility. We received the land dedication now owned by the District on York Street (WCR 11) and Graden Blvd. (WCR 10) in Dacono. The temporary modular buildings used for Quest Academy have a 10-Year shelf life and are far past their life expectancy. These buildings pose many challenges and aren’t adequate for our children to receive the education they deserve. Currently; two subdivisions, Sweetgrass and Eagle Meadow can vote YES this November and support a permanent public school in Dacono. Quest and Dacono is hosting an “Open-House” this month and I ask everyone in the area to please visit our web-site for the specific Saturday morning time. Take a look for yourself and please say YES to this ballot issue. http://www.ci.dacono.co.us/  Thank you for taking the time to read my report, like us on FaceBook and/or check out our website anytime for information,  Take care; Mayor Joe Baker

Firestone sure could use an outdoor swim or water facility. I have certainly heard all of the arguments against outdoor swimming pools throughout the years, including limited time of operation and cost. All of those arguments have weight in the issue of building and supporting a facility that has limited use. However, the way I see it is that the facility will be a great asset to the community for getting the entire family out of their homes and making memories in the summer sunshine. While we don’t currently have anything in the works, I encourage you to share your thoughts with your neighbors, local officials and members of our local recreation district. Damsma was selected to fill the vacancy left by Jennifer Weinberger who had to move out of town limits.  With the fall season upon us the Town is working hard to wrap up a number of construction projects before the weather turns cooler. In the coming weeks we will putting the finishing touches on our First Street rehabilitation with new curb, gutters and paving between Grant Avenue and Buchanan Street. The waterlines were replaced in this roadway last fall. We will continue to work on waterline

replacement in Historic Firestone along with street repairs throughout the next several years as the project is certainly a multi-phase and multi-year project.  Roadway projects are also coming to a close on Firestone Boulevard where we are finishing up the installation of culverts underneath the roadway at the Godding Hollow Ditch to help with future flood mitigation. We’re also replacing the Last Chance Ditch culvert on Colorado Boulevard north of Mountain Shadows Boulevard.  The Firestone Cultural Committee will host a reception for artists that are a part of the Firestone Art & Music Show on Oct. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Carbon Valley Regional Library. This is a great opportunity to get out and enjoy local artwork, take part in live demonstrations and enjoy fun activities.  Wrap up October with Halloween Safe Night presented by the Firestone Police Department on Oct. 28 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Firestone Regional Sports Complex. This is a great fall event that provides a fun environment for Halloween safe games, activities, treats and more.  As always, I’m available to answer questions or concerns and enjoy the opportunity to engage with all of our residents. Please contact me via email at psorensen@firestoneco.gov.

facility. This facility will represent millions of dollars in investment into our community, providing new high-paying jobs for our residents. I would be remiss if I didn’t recognize the teamwork and cooperation it took, not only within the Town of Frederick, but with Weld County, Upstate Colorado and the State of Colorado to move this project forward.  It was great to see eight Frederick neighborhoods participating in National Night Out last month. We gave away over 100 blue light bulbs for people to put in their porch lights to show support for law enforcement. If you missed us at National Night Out, but still want a blue light bulb, contact the Frederick Police Department at 720-382-5700. I would like to extend an extra thanks to the Frederick Police Department who helped me attend all of the events this year, as well as all the neighborhood watch captains who coordinated each event. If you’d like a National Night Out event in your neighborhood next year, please contact the Police Department.

 I’ve heard feedback that mosquitos have been a challenge this year and in talking with our Public Works team, have learned that spraying for mosquitos on a consistent basis has been difficult due to weather patterns. To help combat the problem, Public Works is now adding an extra day of spraying on Wednesdays. What you can do to help, check for standing water, etc.  It’s back to school time and I’d like to remind everyone to be safe as kids are walking and biking to school throughout our community. Let’s all slow down and work together to keep our kids safe.  Miners Day is right around the corner on September 17th and I’d love to see the whole community come out to celebrate Frederick’s rich heritage with us.  As always, I am happy to come to your next group meeting, or schedule a one-on-one, if that’s of interest, just email me at tcarey@frederickco.gov.

In Other Firestone Happenings:  We want to welcome a new Trustee to our Board as John

oriLee’s Chocolates & Gifts, 539 Oak St., #B, Frederick is celebrating its first anniversary in September but owner Lori Hill dreams for her delicious homemade chocolates have only begun. Lori’s family and friends have always supported her aspirations. Since Lori holds a full time job at a school, her 3 daughters, significant other and several family friends have helped her by working in the shop. Store hours are sometimes hard to fill but most customers understand and hold their chocolate addictions at bay until the store is open. LoriLee’s is making a name for itself. LoriLee’s chocolate is very affordable, great tasting and fresh. In addition to the homemade chocolate items that Lori makes herself, jelly bellys and gummy candy can be found there. These are the jelly bellys and “good” gummy candy that one can’t find in grocery stores. Soaps, decorative items, and collectibles are also featured at the shop. Customer orders for weddings, parties and special events makes the delicacies at the event just that . . . special. Lori loves taking orders and satisfying special requests. Although special orders are handled on a case by case basis, please allow a week for “creation time.” LoriLee’s Chocolates are also available to sell in other small specialty stores. LoriLee’s chocolates have been enjoyed in the I-25 Corridor Communities but some customers from Arizona, Wyoming and Idaho have also frequented the shop. Lori shares, “I have many wonderful `regulars’. We are on a first name basis and we talk about what is going on with each other lives. They are my friends and I value that so much! But I am also happy to see new faces and try

very hard to make them feel comfortable with conversation and good service and hope they return as a satisfied customer.” Lori likes feeling that she’s added some fun and something special to the offerings in Downtown Frederick. Some may be surprised that in addition to her other activities, Lori has been trying to finish writing a children’s book and she has an interest in writing another book. She’d love to publish the books and sell them in her store someday. She also loves spending time with her daughters and family, walking, bike riding and playing golf. Her opening day last year still remains as one of her most memorable days in business. Her dream had finally come true. She was surrounded by family, friends and faces of new customers who were to be new friends. In celebration of her first anniversary, Lori Hill is offering CVCR readers 20% off any purchases over $5 during the month of September. Mention the special when you order. LoriLee’s Chocolates & Gifts is open Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, 2:30pm-6:00pm and Saturdays 11:006:00. The chocolate & gift shop is also open during the farmer’s market, Miner’s Day and has expanded hours during other holiday periods. Shop contact information is 303-847-5783, facebook site is LoriLee’s Chocolates & Gifts, website is lorileeschocolates.wix.com/sweet and email is lorileeschocolatees@gmail.com.

Bammann Stained Glass LLC Provides Stunning Custom Stained Glass Designs By Jan Sciacca

A

fter building stained glass works of art as a hobby for 30 years, Joe Bammann and his wife, Colleen started his “official” stained glass business in May 2013 called Bammann Stained Glass LLC. Since then, many beautiful windows and stained glass art have been created, both large and small. Joe explains what he does in a simple way. “I create works of art, made from glass, solder and lead, designed by the clients with my help.” He continues, “Stained glass is very personal. If you’re thinking about having a piece built, take your time and work with the designer because you’re creating something that will be around for 200 years.” Having worked in the graphic arts industry for 25 years, Joe has learned design, color and attention to detail. Most of his clients are homeowners that have always admired stained glass or had one in a previous house, but didn’t know how to go about getting one for their new home. Joe tries to explain and simplify the process by showing his prospective clients styles, glass textures and color combinations. He wants his clients to be part of the process. Colleen assists in balance, composition, and design since she is an art quilter. She also assists with installing the windows in the customer’s home. Stained glass art is affordable. For some clients, the stained glass pieces are a reflection of themselves. For others it is peace of mind that no one can look into the home. Joe tries to keep his business as local as possible but he will build a stained glass for any location. He’s sent windows to other states and even one to Switzerland. When Joe see’s the look on the

customers’ faces for the first time when they see their finished window in their home, it’s rewarding and a reminder of why he does what he does. It hasn’t always been this way. After initially exploring, discovering and learning how to do stained glass during a long, enduring winter in Illinois, the stained glass passion remained a hobby for many years. After working for IBM for 16 years and taking early retirement in 2011, he found that jobs for a man in his 50s were few and far between. After 6 months of being “retired,” Joe had a stroke. He declares, “After a lot of therapy and the Grace of God, I recovered.” That’s when he decided that life is too short to postpone one’s passions and began pursuing his love for stained glass. Area customers share a myriad of positive experiences they have of working with Joe. One local couple is: Dan and Deanna LaFlamme, assert, “Stained glass is one of the best improvements we have made to our home. Our house is similar to many in the neighborhood, but the addition of this beautiful artwork, and our participation in the design process, adds a personal splash of uniqueness. Even after a year, it is still amazing to watch the various colors change as the afternoon sun moves across the sky. Joe did a fantastic job and was a pleasure to work with.” For Erie Consumer Report readers, Joe is offering a special that includes a free in-house, no obligation consultation with a designer, and 10% off your first order until the end of Summer, Sept. 21 2016. Bammann Stained Glass can be reached at 303.506.7608 and bammannstainedglass@ gmail.com. Joe operates out of his private home studio in east Erie.

Laser Dentistry Now Available in the Carbon Valley

I

nspire Dental is a high-tech practice for a high-tech world, embracing technology to achieve optimal results and a better patient experience. When Dr. Kari Amick opened Inspire Dental in Firestone last year, she decided to incorporate the use of lasers for a significant number of dental treatments. Dr. Amick was trained on laser technology several years ago and has continued to develop and refine her skills since then. Recently she completed a private two-day advanced training course with one of the world’s foremost laser dentists, Dr. Mark Colonna. It’s pretty amazing what this instrument can do! The Lightwalker™ is a very unique piece of equipment, incorporating 2 laser wavelengths that can treat both soft and hard tissue. Many dental offices use soft tissue-only lasers to remove excess gum tissue or do other minor surgical procedures. Hard tissue lasers, on the other hand, are capable of “cutting” tooth and bone. If you remember that enamel is the hardest substance in the human body, you understand that this is a powerful instrument. The Lightwalker™ does not actually “cut” tooth or bone tissue, but removes it through a process known as ablation. Without physically touching the target, photon energy in the laser beam is powerful enough to make tooth decay literally disappear. One microsecond it’s there, the next it’s gone! You will also be pleased to know that numbing shots are often not needed when getting fillings done with the laser since the mechanism

of action is gentler. The laser is very precise, allowing for more conservative decay removal--taking out only the bad, leaving all of the good. While a high-speed drill has the potential to cause micro-cracks in the tooth, the Lightwalker™ is touchless, and thus much less traumatic. Having this special technology at Inspire Dental allows Dr. Amick to treat certain conditions that other methods simply cannot. For example, have you ever had an embarrassing, painful cold sore? While there are medications for this, the success is limited. Using the laser on a cold sore when it is first starting to appear can drastically shorten its duration and significantly reduce the pain associated with it. The same approach can be applied to those pesky canker sores inside the mouth. Another very cool facet of laser treatment is called biostimulation. The laser is used in a defocused mode a few inches away from a lesion, wound, or surgical site. The laser energy improves circulation and stimulates your immune system’s response to speed healing. Specialized tips for the laser can even disinfect a tooth from the inside during a root canal procedure or kill bacteria around the teeth and gums

Carbon Monoxide

B

eginning back on July 1, 2009, it became the law in Colorado that most every home that it for sale or lease has a Carbon Monoxide Alarm. Specifically, “If the improvements on the property have a fuel-fired heater or appliance, a fireplace, or an attached garage and one or more rooms lawfully used for sleeping purposes (Bedroom), Seller understands that Colorado law requires that Seller assure the property has an operational carbon monoxide alarm installed within fifteen feed of the entrance to each Bedroom or in a location as required by the applicable building code, prior to offering the property for sale or lease.” You can’t see or smell carbon monoxide, but at high levels it can kill a person in minutes. Carbon monoxide (CO) is produced whenever any fuel such as gas, oil, kerosene, wood, or charcoal is burned. If appliances that burn fuel are maintained and used properly, the amount of CO produced is usually not hazardous. However, if appliances are not working properly or are used incorrectly, dangerous levels of CO can result. Hundreds of people die accidentally every year from CO poisoning caused by malfunctioning or improperly used fuel-burning appliances. Even more die from CO produced by idling cars. Fetuses, infants, elderly people, and people with anemia or with a history

Vol. 17, Issue 9

of heart or respiratory disease can be especially susceptible. Play it safe. If you experience symptoms that you think could be from carbon monoxide poisoning, get to fresh air immediately. Open doors and windows, turn off combustion appliances, and leave the house. Go to an emergency room and tell them you suspect carbon monoxide poisoning. If that has occurred, it can often be diagnosed by a blood test soon after exposure. Having a CO alarm is a good idea, even if you are not selling or renting your home. Keep in mind though; an alarm is not a replacement for proper use and maintenance of fuel burning appliances.

So why not bring those older (gently used and clean) coats to our Coat Drive to help out those

less fortunate. Long’s Insurance Agency is having our 1st annual winter coat drive to join together people who have coats that they are no longer using with people who are in need of warm winter coats. TWAW Shooting Chapters Begin A Place For Women To Learn And Practice

W

ith the upcoming election gun ownership and the complex laws surrounding the use of firearms has been a significant topic around the nation. The 2011 Gallop Poll reported forty-seven percent of American adults currently have a gun in their home and twenty three percent of women personally own a firearm. This reported gun ownership is the highest it has been in nearly two decades. With women being the largest growing segment of this the historically male dominated demographic, industry scrambles to meet the need. With the number of women now owning firearms at such high levels, women are eager to learn and practice with other women. For a woman new to shooting, the very male driven industry can be intimidating. To create women friendly opportunities to practice and learn, TWAW Shooting Chapters, inc. is introducing Shooting Chapters all over the country with a new chapter here in Boulder County Colorado starting soon. TWAW Boulder County Shooting Chapter will give women of all experience levels the opportunity to be introduced to issues important to women shooters, learn safe gun handling skills and train together. TWAW Boulder County Chapter is being spearheaded by Kendall Vonfeldt , local female gun enthusiast. Events will be held monthly and open to all women, 21 years or older. TWAW Shooting Chapters has partnered with the City Of Longmont Police and Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Shooting Range to be the host range for these monthly events. Time will be

8/4/16 4:57 PM

devoted to discussion and topical study as well as time on the range learning and practicing safe gun handling skills at each monthly event. This range will offer expanded opportunities not found at a typical indoor shooting range. Participants will be required to pay the $15 cash range fee and supply their own firearm and ammunition. Annual Chapter membership dues of $50 offers members local and national discounts, chapter hat and member kit and is used to cover chapter expenses, insurance and events. First time attendees are not required to join. The first shoot is scheduled for September 11, 2016 from 4pm - 6pm at 10916 Weld County Road 5, Longmont,Co 80501. Reservations are required. Women interested in learning more can contact Kendall at 720-438-8430 or visit TWAW Shooting Chapters, inc. website at www.twawshootingchapters.org

Nation Of Patriots: 1 Flag, 100 Days, 48 States

T

he 2016 flag tour started in Madison, WI on May 28th, and will return back to Madison, WI on September 3rd. In between it will cover 48 states, raising money for wounded vets. G&G Equipment in Frederick, CO welcomed the flag tour on Sunday August 21st, with burgers, dogs and refreshments. The flag left Doc Holiday Harley Davidson in Glenwood Springs at 9:30 am, and arrived at G&G Equipment at 1:30 pm. It left the following morning at 9:30 am for North Platte NE. The riders were welcomed by local VFW and American Legion vets, including a flag folding ceremony, the

playing of taps, and a missing man table. The flag was then transferred to a new rider, who took an oath to protect the flag and get it to the next destination. Nation of patriots t-shirts were sold, with 100% of the money going to help wounded vets. You can visit www. nationofpatriots.com to follow the flag tour, order t-shirts to help fundraising, make a donation, or sign up to join the ride next year. G&G Equipment would like to thank the LL Johnson Distributing Co, Scag Manufacturing and American Legion Post 22 in making this event possible.

an we remember colors? Yes and no. We can certainly visualize colors. But science leans towards telling us our brain labels most of our colors more simply. So when we go to the paint store to pick the same color our kitchen is currently painted, and we have that precise color in our mind, what we select from that memory still may be off. This is why the paint companies make it easy for us. Along with in-store color selectors, there are also online tools and apps you can use from your computer, tablet or your phone which allow you to upload or take photos and change the colors in these photos to aid in visualizing new color schemes for your interior and exteriors. Sherwin Williams’ ColorSnap Visualizer will match colors to any photo

you select. It will also give you a list of complimentary color selections. You can create an account and save your selections for access from any of your devices. We especially like ColorSnap’s ability to search Sherwin Williams’ Historic Interior and Exterior color collections on our phone and start ‘painting a room’ on our computer, edit it on our tablet and finish it on our phone. ColorSmart from Behr allows you to browse their colors, match colors to your own photos and preview colors in a room image. Benjamin Moore also has an app called Color Capture from which you can do the same. Regardless of how much you like that selection on your computer it may look different once it is applied to your walls. We recommend applying color samples to your walls, so that you can visualize how the colors look at different times of the day and night before making your final decisions. Here is an online link for a fun test regarding color memory and perception: http://www.utpsyc.org/color/. We did pretty well on this test, but then we do this daily.

Otte Family Insurance: One Family Serving Other Families By Jan Sciacca

O

tte Family Insurance was founded by Tessie and Dave Otte in 2013 and is in partnership with The Ahbe Group (TAG Insurance Services). Their dream has always been to have a thriving business where they can help people and also be close as a family. Tessie Otte emphasizes, “This profession allows us to do both.” The Ottes business is all about insurance (Auto, Home, Business, Life and Health). Tessie acknowledges, “Insurance is one of those things that everybody needs, but nobody wants to pay for. That’s why we decided to open an ‘Independent’ insurance agency. As an independent agency, we are not tied down to just ONE insurance company that we can place our clients with. We can shop from MANY different insurance companies so that we can make sure we get you the best rates and value for your money. We all have to have insurance, why not save money? Not only do we save people money, but we also save you money with top-notch insurance companies that have awesome coverage and service.” Then she adds, “Insurance companies that fill the airwaves (TV and Radio) with expensive commercials pay for those commercials with higher rates from their clients.” The Ottes can represent a client nearly

everywhere. Although they live and work along the i25 Corridor, they are licensed to sell in 44 states, with only the states of Arkansas, Delaware, Hawaii, Maine, Rhode Island or West Virginia being excluded. Dave declares, “Tessie is the backbone of this business and is the one that makes it all happen.” They have three children. Outside of work they say their hobby is to raise their children to be good people. There’s not much time for other things, as is the case with most families. Their 22-year-old Joey just returned from a 2-month mission trip to Ethiopia, where he was blessed to be able to spend time with children and share the Word of God. Their 15-year-old son Grant is a sophomore at Monarch HS and their 2 1/2-year-old daughter Kellie is at home with them. One of Tessie’s most memorable experiences was when she and Dave were able to help a client after an accident and help him navigate the claims process so that he could have peace of mind that someone was there for him in his time of need. When asked what Tessie and Dave love most about the business, she responded, “That moment when we know we have really helped someone out and made a friend for life.”

Above: Joey and Tessie Otte Right: Tessie and Dave Otte Below: Grant, Dave and Kellie Otte with dog Skye

Otte Family Insurance is available, officially, Monday – Friday, 7am-5pm but nearly always available at all other times for their clients. Their contact information is 970.234.OTTE (6883), ottefamilyinsurance.com and ottefamilyinsurance@gmail.com.

Tessie said, “Insurance is one of those things that everybody needs, but nobody wants to pay for.” “I agree,” says Kelly Martindale. “But after my nine-year-old daughter died, I started purchasing life insurance for each of my kids and grandkids at an early age if they did not already have it.”

The transition from middle to high school can be an overwhelming yet important experience in life. If you’ve got a teen entering high school for the first time, you’ve got about three weeks to help them mentally prepare, and hopefully reduce some of their anxiety or even fear. After all, what they are interested in during middle school may not be the same in high school. It’s great to keep old friends, but it’s also exciting to make new ones. Ask them to share the characteristics they value in a friend. Ask what classes they are excited about, and which ones concern them. You might suggest that they do a little research about new subjects online, before school starts. Remind them that the pressures of high school are different than middle school. They will have more homework, and their grades will have a big impact on their future. opportunities to get involved with clubs or campus organizations. Since high school populations are generally much larger than middle school, clubs are a great way to feel connected and meet people. As the preparation for high school begins, it might be a good idea to get your teen on a school schedule or timetable before the first day of school. Have them go to bed and get up earlier so it won’t be such a disruption in routine when school starts. Last but not least, don’t forget to encourage healthy nutrition; breakfast truly is the most important meal of the day! Abby Hicks has been a Colorado educator for 13 years and currently teaches Physical Education and Health at Mead High School. She is an advocate for Suicide Education and Prevention (SESS) and Weld County Prevention Partners, programs supported by North Range Behavioral Health. SCHOOL

S R E T T A M

Allow me to introduce Carbon Valley Academy’s Middle School Team

T

his month, Carbon Valley Academy is continuing to highlight the extraordinarily talented teachers that we are so fortunate to have working with our students. This month we’d like to introduce you to our Fifth Middle School Team, Chase Rambow, math, Adam Crawford, history, Chase Baker, language arts and Karie Farland, science. They bring fresh, vibrant ideas and strategies that complement the way kids learn today. This is yet another team who believes that hard work and dedication produce great results. They are a ‘kids first’ team and it shows in everything they do. We invite you to tour our school and stop by their classrooms to see first-hand all the learning that is happening in third grade at CVA!! Mr. Rambow migrated from Minnesota to Colorado and is thoroughly enjoying this w o n d e r f u l place. He has spent the last 2 years teaching in multi grade classrooms at the middle school level. Chase graduated from Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN with a degree in elementary education and math science focus. He is very excited to be a part of the amazing Carbon Valley team! Collaboration is the key for success with students and this is a staff who does that so well! Growing up, Mr. Rambow enjoyed playing sports, especially football, baseball, and basketball. He hopes to coach in one or all three of those sports sometime in the future. Coaching and teaching are two great ways to become an integral part of a community and that is exactly what he desires. Mr. Rambow and his wife are expecting their first child. Mr. Crawford grew up in the Midwest in the state of Indiana. He attended Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana where he studied history, philosophy and met his wife. Upon getting married, he moved to Durango, Colorado where his wife and he enjoyed everything that is great about

living in the mountains. After earning his Master’s degree in teaching from Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina, his family and he moved back to Colorado to the Denver area. This will be Mr. Crawford’s third year at Carbon Valley Academy after teaching at Noel Community Arts School in Denver. He enjoys spending time with his wife and two children, Lyla, 6 and Max, 3 as well as playing outside doing various activities that include camping, hiking, biking and running. Mr. Baker discovered his love of working with kids while working as a camp counselor at Peaceful Valley Boy Scout Ranch from 2004-2010. Following his love of teaching children, he then received a certificate in Secondary English Education from the University of Colorado at Boulder. He is immensely excited to be a part of the team at Carbon Valley Academy and impact the lives of many students. K a r i e Farland I am excited to be joining Carbon Valley Academy as the Middle School Science teacher. I am originally from Kansas, but have lived in the great state of Colorado since 1988. I have a passion for my adopted home and love all things Colorado from the Broncos and Rockies to camping and hiking in the Rocky Mountains along with my husband, two sons and dog. I hold two degrees from Colorado universities. My first degree is in Human Development and Family Studies from Colorado State University and my second is Biology with Secondary Education from University of Northern Colorado. The combination of these degrees has afforded me the expertise to teach Middle Schoolers about the four realms of science, (Biology, Earth Science, Chemistry and Physics), as well as insight into the unique challenges students in Middle School face.

Her extensive background has given her the ability to both REACH and TEACH! At KidsLIFE, the primary emphasis is more than just providing children with a

solid educational foundation. The Gospel of Luke 2:52 says that “Jesus grew is wisdom, in stature, and in favor with God and man.” Mrs. Busbee’s students master STEM and early-reading concepts in an environment that encourages Biblical values and ethics. Bible lessons, practical life-skills, and multi-sensory learning are a few examples of a typical day in the classroom. Students are also given the opportunity to experience music, movement, and creative play. The student /teacher ratio is low, which allows for a private school setting. Kid’s LIFE aims to set each child on the best possible course for success. As each family in our community grows stronger, our community grows stronger. Come see what the buzz is about! Students Entering High School Face Unique Challenges

As

students gear up to get back to school, you can image the overload of feelings and emotions teens will experience; feelings of anxiety, excitement, even confusion. The transition from middle to high school can be an overwhelming yet important experience in life. If you’ve got a teen entering high school for the first time, you’ve got about three weeks to help them mentally prepare, and hopefully reduce some of their anxiety or even fear. Here are some great ways to help them cross the threshold to the high school experience. Here are some helpful ways to support your child cross the threshold to the high school experience. 1 Ask them how they feel about entering high school. Ask open ended questions instead of ones that can be answered by just a simple “yes” or “no.” This doesn’t have to be a big family meeting; some parents say they have their best conversations with their teens while driving in the car. 2 Remind them they aren’t alone with their concerns or feelings. There are hundreds of teens experiencing the same kinds of feelings. 3 Encourage them to make new friends that share their interests. After all, what they are interested in during middle school may not be the same in high school. It’s great to keep old friends, but it’s also exciting to make new ones. Ask them to share the characteristics they value in a friend. 4 Ask what classes they are excited about, and which ones concern them. You might suggest that they do a little research about new subjects online, before school starts. 5 Remind them that the pressures of high school are different than middle school. They will have more homework, and their grades will have a big impact on their future. Remind them to write down

deadlines and homework assignments in a planner or create reminders in their phone or other electronic device to assist with time management and organization. 6 Encourage them to check out the school website and look at all of the opportunities to get involved with clubs or campus organizations. She lives in Frederick with her husband and two children.

Real E$tate Re$ource$ Should You Look for Your First House — Or Renew Your Lease?

C

onsider 5 key questions in your quest to decide whether you’re ready to go for it. 1. Are You Financially Prepared? Buying a home requires a substantial financial commitment. The down payment can be at least 3 ½% of the cost of the home plus another 3% or more for closing costs. A healthy credit history is also important. Most borrowers will start loan qualification with a minimum score of 620 — but the best interest rates will be offered to those with a score of 700+. Lenders will also review your debtto-income ratio. They want borrowers to have a certain level of cash flow each month- taking into account how much you’re paying for other loans. Ideally, a borrower’s debt-to-income ratio should fall below 36%. 2. Are You Prepared to Make Compromises? You likely have a list of wanted features for a home. But you may discover once you start the process of looking at homes that the homes you can afford may not be in a desirable area. You may need to find a middle ground, giving up some lower priorities for some higher ones. 3. Are You Emotionally Ready? When it comes to renting, surprises don’t require much emotional investment. The rent goes up? You can move. The fridge is on the fritz? The landlord will fix it. Home ownership is a bit more Robin Glasener

hands-on. Everything could be peachy for months, and then three maintenance issues might spring up in the same week. Stress management and problem solving skills are homeownership biggies. 4. Will Owning Pay Off in the Long Run? Depending on the home you choose and where you live, you may pay a lower mortgage than you paid for rent. But even if you don’t, there’s still the financial advantage of building equity in your home, instead of lining your landlord’s pockets. 5. Has Your Lifestyle Outgrown Renting? Many people find a rental can only take them so far. If you plan to start a family, you may want a few extra rooms, and that can get expensive with rising rental rates. A yard also provides a safe place for children to play or for a dog to scamper around. And speaking of Fido, the vast majority of renters have trouble finding a place that allows pets. Home ownership can end that stress for good. Buying a first home is a big change — both from a financial and an emotional perspective. Still, for many, home ownership can be one of the most rewarding life choices one can make.

Body + Soul Wellbeing Dr. Tim Nagel Joins North Vista Medical Center

T

im Nagel, MD, has joined North Vista Medical Center team and is accepting new patients. Dr. Nagel brings nearly three decades of family medicine experience to North Vista Medical Center. Prior to joining the North Vista Medical Center team, Dr. Nagel practiced medicine in rural Iowa, caring for patients of all ages. There, he delivered hundreds of babies and cared for them from birth into adulthood. For his older patients, Dr. Nagel’s experience in geriatric medicine has enabled him to help countless patients successfully manage a wide range of chronic age-related diseases while also helping patients and their families understand and navigate end of life issues. Dr. Nagel says he will continue to offer medical care to all age ranges, with his main focus being on preventative care and maintaining good health through proper diet and exercise. In addition to routine family medicine services, he assists in creating nutrition and exercise plans tailored to the individual needs of his patients. Dr. Nagel is board-certified in family medicine and is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He earned his medical degree and completed his family practice residency training at the University of Iowa. Dr. Nagel, who spent years assisting in the emergency department of his local hospital, holds numerous life support certifications, including advanced cardiac life support (ACLS), advanced trauma life support (ATLS), basic life support (BLS) and pediatric advanced life support (PALS). Throughout his medical career, Dr. Nagel has served as a preceptor at the University of Iowa, helping to train the next generation of physicians and physician assistants. Dr. Nagel and his wife Denise came to Colorado 25 years ago for a medical conference and have been coming back every year since. 20 years ago, they purchased a home in Estes Park and started making the trip to the Centennial state at Easter and Thanksgiving too.

Dr. Nagel first started looking into direct primary care last fall when his Iowa partner showed him an article about Dr. Flanagan. He and Dr. Flanagan talked on the phone and then they met when the Nagels were here at Easter. Dr Nagel’s first thought was that he wanted to replicate what Dr. Flanagan was doing at his own practice in Iowa. Then he was offered the opportunity to join North Vista Medical Center in Frederick and Longmont. He smiles as he says, “I couldn’t turn that down.” When asked what he likes most about the area and what he has yet to do, Dr. Nagel shares, “Our family enjoys hiking and wildlife viewing throughout Rocky Mountain National Park. Despite all the years of coming here there are many trails we have not hiked yet so we hope to have time to tackle them now. Another hobby I have always wanted to try is fly fishing including tying my own flys.” The Nagels have nine children and soon to be six grandchildren. With the move to Colorado, the Nagels look forward to spending time with their children and grandchildren, many of whom have moved or are planning to move to Colorado. Dr. Nagel can be reached at 303-5012600 or dr@northvistamedical.com.

Food for the Soul: By Faith

A

s a Christian, it is imperative to live by faith. Often our concept of faith determines how we live our daily lives. There are some myths about faith that often cloud Christian’s lives. Scripture gives a very clear picture of both what faith is and what faith is not. Here are the myths of faith. Faith is Not a Blind- Hebrews 11:1 teaches us that there is both substance and evidence that we base our faith off of in this life. See God never asks us to do anything that there is not evidence to show us that is what He wants us to do. God gives us a clear direction. We may not be able to see everything, but we will be given a clear direction. Faith is Not a Leap- Despite what people may say all the time. God never asks us to take leaps of faith in life. What He asks us, is to be obedient to Him daily. As we take those daily steps of faith, it is easier for us to live by faith. Psalm 37:4 teaches us that as we live obediently doing the things Christ asks each day, He will reveal what He wants us to do. Also, in Philippians 4:13, the Bible says that I can do ALL things THROUGH CHRIST, which strengthens me. Understanding that this life in Christ is lived daily. It is not weekly, monthly, every Sunday, but daily. As we take those daily steps of Faith, we will always avoid any type of leaping. Living by Faith does not have PROS and CONS- As we read Hebrews 11:438, we see many men and women in the Hall of Faith chapter that show us what it meant to live by faith. It is important to understand that when we live by faith, there are no CONS, there are only PROS to being obedient to Christ and living by

This plan includes a free fitness consultation and a free 30-day fitness plan. “We understand how difficult it can be to get started on a new routine – no matter how hard you try,” said Nicole Grine, Anytime Fitness club owner. “A lot of people mistakenly believe that you need to be fit before joining a fitness club. That’s simply not true. And it’s why we developed our ‘Get Started’ plan, which includes a 30-day personalized workout calendar and guidance from our expert staff to help new members get off to a solid start on their fitness journeys. Every workout plan will be based on the outcome of a comprehensive fitness consultation.” For more information about the free “Get Started” plans at Anytime Fitness, call 303-772-2660 to set up an appointment.

faith. I have seen so many people in life when trying to “decipher” how to follow God in His will, that they literally write out a PROS and CONS sheet. The only CON to living by Faith is not living by it at all. When living for Christ, there is only PROS. Philippians 1:21 says, for me to live is CHRIST, and to die is gain. Being disobedient has severe consequences with our relationship in Christ. Our Faith is not Stationary- Scripture teaches us in Hebrews 11, that our faith is a moving faith. It is active. If you read this passage you will see that each person was not just sitting around, they were active in their decisions to follow Christ. James 2:22 teaches that faith alone is dead. What does this mean? It means that if I am truly saved I will be actively working to serve the Lord in the things that I do on a daily basis. If I say that I love something, I will be motivated to do something. And that will be frequent actions, not just when it is convenient for us. Are you living by faith? Or are you living a myth?

A New Challenge

Shiatsu

t the end of last months’ article in this paper, I challenged you to get outside of your comfort zone and do something new, to expand your fitness horizons. Did you answer with a yes? If so, congratulations on trying something new! I had a chance to try a new challenge that I had not done before as well. I climbed the Manitou Incline. It’s a climbing trail in Colorado Springs. It gains 2,000ft in one mile with a 41%-68% grade in steepness. Here’s a picture of me as I finished at the top with that feeling of accomplishment you get when you’ve done something challenging. I highly recommend it next summer. If you’re ready for another challenge.... Ladies, join my 6 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge Fall 2016 by committing to get fit and improve your health. The goal of this challenge is to get you in a steady habit of a healthy way of life through exercise and healthy food choices. Register in person with me the week of September 19th-23rd, 2016. This will include a weigh-in on the scale, body fat analysis, measurements, before picture, and a nutrition consult with your overall HealthPrint. Plus, at home workout challenges. It’s a $15 buy-in for the 6 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge. At the end of the 6 weeks, the person with the highest % of weight loss will have earned the cash from everyone’s buy-in. It will be required that you attend at least once per week, one of my ladies only fitness groups in Frederick and Niwot, OR that you’re one of my current mobile personal training clients. It is required that you RSVP on a website when you’ll attend my fitness groups. For the 6 Week Healthy Weight Loss Challenge, participants need to register with me in person on one of the following dates: • Monday, Sept 19th, attend fitness group at 8:40am in Niwot, register after at 9:50am.

S

hiatsu is a Japanese style of therapeutic massage that is closely related to acupuncture. Rather than using needles, pressure is applied along the channels and points that acupuncturists use to regulate the system and encourage the movement of blood and qi. In this article I will briefly explain it’s therapeutic advantages. There are many appropriate uses for Shiatsu. It is often used to help relieve tight muscle following injury, repetitive stress injuries and emotional stress. The most common uses are for acute or chronic back, hip, shoulder and neck pain. In some circumstances, tight and inflamed muscle can press against nerves and cause problems such as sciatica and numbness in the hands. Sciatica may be the number one reason that I use Shiatsu as it is an effective method to relieve tight musculature in the lower back, buttocks, hips and legs. Many people also come into the office experiencing numbness or tingling in the hands. Because the nerves that affect the hands begin at the neck and travel through the shoulder and arms,

I have found that it is best to massage at the neck, shoulders and upper back. Shiatsu helps to identify exactly where the muscle tension is, encourages blood flow and relieves the tension. During most treatment sessions, acupuncture and cupping will follow Shiatsu as these are effective methods to further relieve tight muscles, reduce inflammation and encourage the movement of blood and qi in the affected area, and throughout the entire system. Shiatsu is safe for people of all ages, the main difference being the amount of pressure applied. Practitioners use their fingertips with infants and young children, and less pressure with elderly. Bakin’ Bacon

B

ack to school is a reality and soon, days will shorten and morning hours will seem more rushed than ever. Maybe your mornings are always rushed, even on the weekend! My recipe this month centers around a more controversial breakfast protein, but I have it on the authority of several vegetarians that I have known that if one meat could be allowed on their vegetarian diet, they would want it to be bacon. Bacon, bacon and more bacon – most Americans hate that they love bacon…but, love it they do. Many people have told me that frying bacon takes too long in the morning, and even more so, the cleanup after. Here is a recipe that is convenient, and easier to manage on a busy morning. It will crisp up nicely, and feed more than a couple of people at a time. As an added bonus, the leftover bacon can be used in sandwiches, salads, or in dinnertime recipes…IF you have any left. What You Need

1 - 12-oz. package NO SUGAR Hickory Smoked Uncured Bacon (recipe easily doubles if you have 2 sheet pans and baking racks) ***Buying uncured all natural bacon ensures you aren’t getting the chemicals used to cure standard commercial bacon products.

Cooking Spray 1 Half Sheet Pan 1 Cookie/Baking Rack Oven Timer Reminder: Oven temperatures may vary from oven to oven. Directions

1) Place your baking rack on the sheet pan. 2) Spray rack liberally with cooking spray. 3) Place strips of bacon across the width of the baking rack, leaving space between them. (I can usually get a whole pack on the rack.) If you need more, use two backing racks and sheet pans. 4) Place sheet pan in your conventional oven which you have preheated to 400 degrees F. (Place in the very middle of the oven on the middle rack position.) 5) Set timer for 10-12 minutes (your oven may vary, so watch closely the first time you do it.) 6) At 12 minutes (for my oven), check the bacon to make sure it is browning evenly, and set the oven for 350 degrees F. to cook for another 15-18 minutes. [From my initial tests, 12 minutes at 400 degrees followed by 18 minutes at 350 degrees, yields the perfect CRISP bacon every time without mishap.] 7) Remove bacon to platter and enjoy! Observation: The bacon browns beautifully, doesn’t shrink as much as when it is pan fried, releases enough fat to make one feel better about eating it, and crisps up beautifully. Yields: A perfect baked package of bacon, ready for eating, sharing, and crumbling for recipes! (4-6 servings)

Sport Clips Of Firestone Supports Help A Hero Program

S

ince 2007, Sport Clips Team Members nationwide have joined forces to raise funds in-store and in their communities for our Help A Hero campaign, benefitting the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW). Through the support of stores like ours in Firestone, CO and our generous clients, Sport Clips has been able to give more than $3 Million, to help our nation’s heroes. From 2007 to 2012, Help A Hero donations supported the VFW’s Operation Uplink ™, which connected hospitalized and deployed U.S. service members with loved ones through FREE phone calls home. Beginning in 2013, with troops returning from overseas, Sport Clips partnered with the VFW to establish the VFW’s “Help a Hero Scholarship” program. In 2015, through the support of our team members, clients, partners and others, Sport Clips raised more than $900,000 for the Help A Hero program – the largest donation in program history! To date, Sport Clips has given more than $1.6 Million in scholarship assistance to deserving service members and veterans! Sport Clips of Firestone is excited to participate in this year’s promotion! “We want to help our nation’s heroes in the next chapter of their lives. Through the assistance the Help A Hero scholarships provide, Sport Clips is able to help U.S. service members and veterans get the education they need to pursue their dreams and find success back home,” said Kurk Erickson, owner of Sport Clips in Firestone, CO. “Some ask if there is a need,” said Denise Erickson, Team Leader, “The military offers the GL Bill and Military Tuition Assistance programs, however not all U.S. Service members qualify for the 100% GL Bill benefits, and Military Tuition Assistance has some limitations, so our program fills those gaps.” Sport Clips of Firestone is offering a coupon in the Carbon Valley Consumer Report (page 13) where clients can get

$2.00 off a haircut and Sport Clips of Firestone will also donate $1.00 to the Help a Hero program for each coupon redeemed now through November 11. “We are excited that our Team Leaders are starting the fund raising program for Help A Hero by offering a discount. Our team is excited to be involved. We appreciate our clients support and our proud of our association with the Help A Hero program, to give back to those that gave so much,” said Rachel, Manager of Team on Fire, Sport Clips of Firestone. 13 years! That’s how long Abundant Life Church has been declaring the awesomeness of Jesus Christ to the Mead community and beyond. From our humble beginning at the Town Hall Community Room to our present location at 4380 Highway 66 (just 3/10 mile east of I25 on the south side) it has been our mission to live up to our motto:

“It’s all about the love” None has ever demonstrated love better than God in sending His only Son to die on a cruel Roman cross for the sins of mankind. And those who find new life in Jesus are never disappointed. We invite you to come and share LIFE with us any Sunday at 10:00 am and bring the kids. Why do we do it? Because Heaven is filled with “Wow!” that never ceases for all eternity. And Jesus promises abundant life here and now to all His children. Get in on the blessings—yield your life to our Redeemer. 970.535.0311 www.alcworshipwarriors.org

In and Around Carbon Valley Over the Next Month or So Veteran’s Fund Raiser Hey everyone, we’ve got a really fun event planned for September 18th. Let’s all show our support and pack the distillery. It’s $5 for individuals and $10 per family. Black Canyon Distillery, 13710 Deere Court, Longmont (Mead), CO 80504.

Abundant Life Church Celebrates 13 Years and is Close to Everything

S

eptember marks the 13th anniversary of Abundant Life Church of Mead. The church is virtually close to everyone. It’s considered a Mead church, has a Longmont address and has Firestone at its backdoor. Jim Coleman, along with wife Pam and a dozen others, planted Abundant Life Church in the fall of 2003, when they began meeting in the Town Hall community room. They moved into the current facility in July of 2005 and have been growing faith ever since. Abundant Life is Jim’s 7th church plant. Each time he’s planted a church he’s gone where he believes the Lord is sending him. He nearly went to Boulder but felt the Lord leading him to the Mead community instead. And we’re glad he did. He and Pam have led and blessed many. Abundant Life Church is located at 4380 Highway 66 (east of I-25). Worship

Y

services are Sundays at 10am. The church can be reached at 970.535.0311 or alcworshipwarriors.org.

t. Brigit Episcopal Church will welcome Autumn with an Equinox Celebration on Wednesday, September 22, 2016, at 7:00p.m. The Autumnal Equinox Service is part of St. Brigit’s A’it Caol series, now in its fifth year. A’it Caol (pronounced atch qweel) is Gaelic for “A Thin Place.” These services are created to offer guests an experience of God through a unique liturgy, which combines ancient tradition with contemporary language. They include specially designed medita-tion areas, reflecting the Scriptural lessons, and sacred music with an ethnic sound. St. Brigit’s Autumnal Equinox Service will feature guest artist, Brian Mullins, an Irish musi-cian who plays a variety of modern and ancient string instruments. In keeping with the Celtic tradition of honoring the earth as God’s creation, St. Brigit celebrates the Autumnal Equinox, marking the transition between Summer and Winter. “Equinox” is a translation of

the Latin word, aequinoctium, or “equal night.” On this day, there are 12 hours each of daylight and darkness. The Earth’s axis is parallel to the Sun, so the Northern and Southern Hemispheres are illuminated equally. Sunrise occurs at 7a.m. and sunset, at 7p.m. Ancient people marked this day with both thanksgiving for the harvest and prayers for protection during the approaching time of darkness and cold. St. Brigit will celebrate this bittersweet time by reflecting on God’s abundant gifts of the harvest and God’s continual command to share that harvest. Older children are welcome at the service. Childcare will be provided for children under age six. Guests are invited to walk St. Brigit’s outdoor labyrinth prior to the service. St. Brigit Episcopal Church is located at 110 Johnson Street in Frederick. Vis-it www.stbrigit.org or www.facebook.com/ StBrigit for more information.

hat if the travel industry looked at social media as a way to provide online concierge service? It’s already happening! The number of Southwest Airline employees on its “Social Care Team” less than two years ago? Three. The team has grown from three to almost 30 employees, available seven days a week. 375,000 questions were posted to airlines via Twitter or Facebook in Q2 of 2015. Nearly 85,000 of those questions were posed via Facebook. The relationship between customer and hospitality brand has transformed - raising the stakes in a myriad of ways. If a customer is inconvenienced with a delay, they may broadcast it

The Town Board opted to appoint him to the position. Present Firestone Damsma has served on the Town’s Park, Trails and Recreation Advisory Board for the past two years and looks forward to serving the Town as a member of the Board of Art & Music Show In Trustees. October he Firestone Cultural Committee is excited to partner with the Carbon Valley Regional Library once again to host the Firestone Art & Music Show in October 2016. The show will highlight artists from the communities of Firestone, Frederick, Dacono and Mead. A reception is set for Oct. 8 from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Carbon Valley Regional Library, 7 Park Ave., Firestone. The reception is a great time for artists to visit with guests, meet other artists, listen to live music, enjoy refreshments and take part in this special event. The call for entries is now open as artists are welcome to apply for admission into the show by filling out the application online at www. firestoneco.gov/FirestoneArtMusicShow. Types of artwork that will be displayed include, but are not limited to, paintings, drawings, sculptures, jewelry, carvings and metalwork. Artists 16 and older may submit to the exhibit. Artists will be limited to two pieces each with the exception of artists displaying items in the display cases like jewelry. Live art demonstrations are also back at the event this year and artists have the opportunity to be considered for a demonstration during the reception. Artists interested in being considered for a live art demonstration should select that option on the application. Selected artists will be set up in the library meeting room to do painting, drawing, weaving and more.
