Amy Tallent of The Tallent Company Lives and Breathes “Erie” By Jan Sciacca
As
the Erie Consumer Report launches with this issue, it only seems fitting that we highlight a company that is owned by a woman who lives and breathes “Erie.” That’s Amy Tallent! She went from a child who was upset with her parents for moving her to Erie from Aurora, CO to the assertive, self-confident female entrepreneur she is today. She and her husband, Jesse, met in the “old” Erie Middle/Senior High School, where she was part of the building’s last graduating class. She says that being raised and living in Erie is not only the best thing, but she tells friends and acquaintances alike that Erie was instrumental in making her who she is now. Amy owns The Tallent Company, which is a locally owned and operated public relations firm that specializes in serving small businesses and nonprofit organizations throughout the Front Range and Northern Colorado. Amy gives her customers the ability to be heard while remaining unique in a market that is saturated with corporate marketing ploys and international publicity schemes. Using her experience in public education and extensive knowledge of the region, she works closely with her customers
to create personalized branding and content marketing strategies on a local level, while facilitating an honest and stream-lined approach to business efficiency as a whole. The Tallent Co. serves a variety of clients throughout Colorado but its main focus is the Front Range. Amy started the business because she believed that small businesses and nonprofits in the Erie area were not being recognized for their hard work. She elaborates, “Business owners in this area are so generous with their time and money. They give back to the community and no one was telling their story. I have a passion for local small business and non-profit groups. I strive to work with and assist organizations that want to make a positive difference in their local communities.” Through January, Tallent Co. will be offering custom strategic marketing plans for 2015. These plans lay out a years’ worth of content marketing and create a strategy of delivery, using various methods based on the customer’s needs. Also included in this plan is a business efficiency worksheet to assist in finding ways to make one’s business more productive. Tallent Co. always offer free consultations. Amy and Jesse believe in
helping small businesses whether or not that results in a sale for them. After high school, Amy earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Communication from the University of Northern Colorado. During college, Jesse and Amy married in a small ceremony in San Diego and are now the proud parents of two young boys. In 2015 the couple will be celebrating 13 years together and 7 years married. As Tallent Co.’s Creative Director, Jesse uses his skills in art, design and writing. When he is not focusing on content creation and design for Tallent Co., he works as a full-time firefighter for Fort Lupton Fire Protection District. Amy’s priority in life is her husband and children but she loves to research unique campaigns and marketing strategies in her spare time. In addition, she enjoys family time, camping, reading, writing, hosting events and calligraphy. The most memorable experience Amy has had in business is becoming a board member for the Erie Chamber of Commerce. She reminisces, “When I worked as an administration assistant to Elle Cabbage at the Erie Chamber of Commerce, it was a goal

of mine that someday I would be in the board room working with other influential leaders in the community to focus on promoting businesses in Erie.” That goal is now a reality. In addition to Elle at the Erie Chamber of Commerce (elle@eriechamber.org), Amy lists Pam Ware at Front Range Hospice (pware@frhospice.com) and Sara Trujillo of New American Funding (sara.trujillo@nafinc .omc) as business references. Amy wants the community to know that public relations, branding, marketing, and advertising are all attainable and important for any level of business. Although intimidating, public relations, can have a large payoff in one’s business when used properly. She knows a business owner has

hedding a few tears is usually a part of uploading this publication to the printer. When there is nothing else I can do to it, I always thank God as I start to unwind and focus on the accomplishments of the previous weeks work. As this particular paper is wrapping up, I am especially grateful to be celebrating the start of my 16th year of business in the Carbon Valley, my 3rd year in Mead and now, drum roll please…the debut of the Erie Consumer Report! It is an achievement that I did not pursue nor plan, but one that the Lord has allowed me to continue. I am humbled by this gift. And for God’s continued guidance, inspiration and strength to continue and now expand. It’s a privilege to meet and then introduce to you, the huge variety of business owners in the areas we serve. One business I’ve been particularly blessed by is Aesthetic Flooring and Hard Surfaces. We wrote a feature article on them in the March issue after they moved to a building with much better visibility and more space for their showroom and inventory. A few months later while volunteering at the Dacono Music Festival, Jan Sciacca (Director of Ad Sales) heard that The Carbon Valley Help Center’s carpet was in dismal shape. Jan shared the need of the organization with those at Aesthetic Flooring and in August,
owner Silverio Garcia donated carpet and installation to the Help Center. It was the generous spirit of the staff at Aesthetic Flooring and their huge selection of products that helped me decide to personally utilize their services. Now my living room and my office has new, plush carpet that adds comfort and class to my home. I was 100% satisfied from the removal of my old carpet to the installation of the new. The service technicians were professional from start to finish, including moving my furniture back into place. I could not have been happier with the whole process. It’s been one of the biggest blessing of my year. Jan’s abilities to network are the true definition of our tag line: Creating Community by Connecting Neighbors. On another occasion, Jan heard of a need and made a connection. This time the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce had a need for an event sponsor that was met by Ritchie Brothers Auctioneers. Thank you, Jan, for watching out for ALL of us. You continue to be the greatest gift to this business and I count you as one of the most valuable assets. Jan, Peggy (writer) and I work diligently to introduce you to the businesses in the areas we serve. We want you to know of the honest automotive mechanics and the gentle dentists and the compassionate pet care providers in and around the areas we all live. We hope you will choose to invest your hard earned dollars with the local businesses in your communities. I am continually contacted by readers who share how the CVCR has helped them in one way or another. I thank God that He uses the Carbon Valley Consumer Report and the

Consumer Report of Mead, your community newspapers, to help and serve the readers of Dacono, Firestone, Frederick, Longmont, and Mead. I’m thankful to say that we will debut the all-new Erie Consumer Report this month. It will be in Erie readers’ mailboxes by January 15 and is focused completely on the Town of Erie. I have no doubt that Jan will continue the efforts of connecting the needs of some with the provisions of others as we move into 2015. I found today’s emailed Bible verse and explanation so appropriate: “Without oxen a stable stays clean, but you need a strong ox for a large harvest.” —Proverbs 14:4 Explanation: This interesting verse focuses on two possible approaches to risk and personal investment. You can choose a “clean stable,” avoiding the dirt, mess, and hassle of taking care of the “ox” (pet, child, opportunity). But then you also miss out on the reward: what the “ox” could bring into your life (“a large harvest”). Certainly there are times to “buy the ox” and times not to. As opportunities present themselves, pray about whether this is an “ox” that’s worth all that’s entailed with giving up a “clean stable.” —Diane Eble, author of Abundant Gifts: A Daybook of Grace-Filled Devotions Having the responsibility of another publication is hard work but if it’s anything like the Carbon Valley Consumer Report and the Consumer Report of Mead, well, the rewards will be great. I can count on that because I can count on my Lord to continue to fulfill His promises; not only to those of us at the paper, but to you all, as well.
The opinions expressed in features, columns, press releases, letters to the editor, etc. are not necessarily those of the Owner and publisher of the Erie Consumer Report. Tallent (continued from page 1) much in his or her mind already to tell the world but many times struggles with the outlet to do so. Amy’s advice to readers of The Erie Consumer Report is to use your advertising wisely; educate your target audience about you and your company. Focus on branding through your content marketing. She also reminds business owners that social media is just one component of a successful marketing plan. It can be a very valuable asset if used correctly, but it must be combined with other strategies in order to be effective. Amy Tallent loves her clients. She cares and is passionate about this community. The Tallent Company can be reached at 720-460-1826, www.tallentco.com or info@ tallentco.com.

Review Your Estate Plan he beginning of a new year is great time to review your estate plan and determine if there Tconsider are any changes that need to be made. Questions we recommend you take a moment to are: • • • •
Have you reviewed your will recently? Do you know where your original will is kept? Does your will designate the correct people to administer your estate? Does your personal representative know where your original will is and who to contact? Do you have any beneficiaries, such as children or grandchildren, for whom a trust would be appropriate? Note that trusts are also appropriate when leaving inheritance to adult beneficiaries who may lack the financial discipline to appropriately handle receiving large lump sum payments. • Are your powers of attorney up to date and do your agents have a copy? • Are the agents designated in your powers of attorney still appropriate? • If your insurance policy is owned by a trust, are the annual beneficiary notices being sent and retained with the trust records? • Have you confirmed that your beneficiary designations (on IRA and 401k accounts) and other property passing outside your probate estate (jointly owned or pay on death accounts) reflect your current wishes and are taken into account in your will (including tax apportionment)? • Do you have a current listing of all your usernames/passwords available in case of disability or death? • Have you created a letter of instruction for those administering your estate that might, for example, detail your funeral wishes, provide contact information for certain key individuals and guide your administrators as to where important papers can be found? • Have you planned for the succession of your business? • Did you make any gifts in 2014 that require filing a gift tax return? • If you have entered into any intra-family loans, are the appropriate loan payments being made annually? At the Germany Law Firm we specialize in all areas of the estate planning and administration process. We also specialize in estate litigation, though hopefully, through proper planning, your estate will never be in need of such services. If any questions arise as you review your estate plan, or if you identify any changes to your plan that need to be made, we encourage you to contact us at (303) 454-3711 or at www .coelderlaw.net.

A New Home for an Old Mill Submitted by Alan Wise, Erie Historical Society
On
the south side of Jasper Road, just across from the entry to the Wise Homestead Museum, you will see a dilapidated old metal building. That’s the old privately owned Wise Mill. It was built around 1915 after a larger mill in Canfield, also owned by the Wise brothers, burned down. The new, smaller mill was used by family and neighbors, and was operated by William T. Wise. Sarah Wise, William’s daughter and Alan’s aunt, remembers going down to the mill to watch the grinding and sometimes visit with the neighbors. The machinery didn’t run constantly, only when someone needed it. Anyone in the nearby area could drive up with their wagon load of grain, roll onto the scales at the scale house across the lane and be weighed in with their full load. Then they would drive the short distance across the lane to the mill and shovel their grain into the hopper on the side of the building. The hopper would feed the grain into an elevator. The elevator consisted of several metal cups attached to a large belt enclosed in a wooden chute. The cups would carry the grain to the top of the mill where it would flow by gravity to a hopper over the grinder. The grinder consisted of two sets of steel rollers. The operator would adjust the gap between the rollers depending on how finely someone wanted to grind the grain. After the grain went through the grinder, it fell by gravity
to another elevator that carried it to the top again to be directed to one of two large hoppers or a chute to fill bags. The customer would drive his wagon under the hopper to load his newly-ground grain. All this was run by a single large electric motor running a set of pulleys and belts. Though the motor is long gone, the belts, pulleys and buckets are still intact. The structure on the roof of the mill is a “cyclone”. Its purpose is to separate the grain from the chaff and dust. Today the mill stands in the way of progress, and will soon be removed. A housing development that is planned for the south side of Jasper cannot move forward until the old building is removed to make space for an easement for future road expansion. The Wise family is in the process of looking for a grant and/or donations to move the mill onto the Homestead Museum property just across the road. For now, the mill still stands in its original spot. Take time soon to drive by and get a good look. It’s a nostalgic reminder of Erie’s past. The mill is one of the Town of Erie’s first Historic Landmarks and The Erie Historical Society would like to restore the mill as an example of the traditional design and materials. For more information or to donate to their cause, go to www.eriehistoricalsociety .org or call 303-828-4561.
