Erie Resident Libby Swenson: Champions Us With a Challenge . . . By Jan Sciacca

E

rie resident Libby Swenson sets an amazing example of love as she makes a difference at home and abroad by rallying and organizing lay people and professionals just like you and me to do whatever each of us can, individually and corporately, to advance the end of modern day slavery. She wants you and me to ask, “What can I do?” Today Libby Swenson is the National Partnership Director for Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ) and International Justice Mission (IJM). Cru has a ministry presence in 190 countries; IJM is a human rights organization that strives to rescue victims of slavery, sexual exploitation and other forms of violent oppression.

What’s On My Mind Kelly Martindale, Publisher Like Gumby, Stretched to the Max and Still Smiling have two children fear you get, when, in the darkness of the I believe this with my whole heart, now. Ichildren and three grand- early morning hours, you hear something. Though it was not always so. And while I who keep You cannot place the sound and you think do still experience the depths of sorrow, me lovingly bound to this earth and this time. But I also have two children who died in 1990 and 2002 who draw me heavenward, missing them so deeply that sometimes I wish I were there at that moment. Yes, I still miss them, shed tears on special days like their birthdays and wonder what life would be like if they had not died. Some days I am so pulled, so stretched between Heaven and Earth that it is physically painful. Yet, I remain here in Colorado, living and working in Frederick, in my home of twenty years now. And I am happy for the most part, usually joyful, mostly content, and always thankful for my family, my home, friends, and neighbors. To be truthful, I never thought my life would be this good. Good? Why? How is this considered good? Please, hear me out. Even before my children died and before any of them were born, violence and tragedy visited almost daily. From my earliest memories, my parents fought violently with each other. I lived in constant fear. I wasn’t afraid for my life but you know that

someone is in your house. Or out camping in a tent and the moon is new and it’s black and quiet and a twig snaps and a moment later, snaps again, and you wonder who or what is creeping up on you….that kind of fear. Fear has been my companion for so many years that I felt like we were conjoined and I could not imagine my life without it. Weird, sick even, I know. And yet, despite a childhood of insecurity, devastating divorce, and abuse, here I am. Still smiling, still a functioning contributing adult to society. And while I came close to each of these, I’m not a felon, drug dealer or alcoholic AND I’m still alive. (I didn’t even tell you about my twenties!) Last month, I shared how hard it was to quit living in fear. That it is a choice I have to make almost every day. This month I want to share that as devastatingly hard as my life has been, I have also experienced life altering blessings like being able to work from home for over 16 years, healthy grandchildren, and friends that still care about me. For as Kahlil Gibran wrote, “The deeper that sorrow carves into your being the more joy you can contain. Is not the cup that holds your wine the very cup that was burned in the potter’s oven?” ~ Kahlil Gibran (1883-1931)

sometimes, my joy is too much to contain! So, as I said, I never expected my life to be this good. And then there is still more. I have been given the opportunity, many actually, to help those who now go through what I have gone through in the past. And isn’t this what life is truly about; to guide others, to let them lean on you, to cradle their head in your hands and catch the tears that drench their laps. To share their burdens and let them know they are not alone…and you are not alone. If not I, then there are others who know of the trials you are going through, at this moment. This is my life. It was given to me as a gift. I did not always want it but I accept it willingly, today. And as each day passes, I am acutely aware that all the darkness of my life is being used to bring light into yours. Now, I am visited almost daily by the knowledge that goodness is happening, all around me, because I see that every detail of my life is being worked out and utilized for something good. “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.” Apostle Paul, Romans 8:28 King James Version (KJV)

Swenson (continued from page 1) captured the dignity, hope and beauty of the enslaved, trafficked or oppressed subject, in spite of the chaos of his or her world. As I stepped into the chilly room to catch a glimpse of this amazing compilation, there was a common element that artists from all over the world portrayed. It was “the eyes.” As Libby explained it, all the subjects in these paintings were actual people who had been enslaved, trafficked or oppressed. The eyes in the paintings seemed to cry out from every painting. The “Faces of Freedom Exhibit” consists of 100 paintings. The art exhibit is meant to help attendees follow the true stories of the victims, ponder their own history with injustice and be moved to their own action as various hands-on suggestions of how to join the fight against oppression are highlighted. A church in Bentonville, AR will be the destination when the exhibit travels to an exposition in May. Wal-Mart and Coca Cola are sponsoring a film festival in the community at the same time so the Swensons are hoping many from the film festival will

see the exhibit as well. Faces of Freedom is designed to travel to schools, universities, libraries, churches, airports, hospitals and other civic venues. The exhibit is currently on display, through the end of March, at 1st Presbyterian Church in Boulder, located at 1820 15th Street, Boulder. Information on donating to support the art exhibit and its purpose can be found at the website freedom58project.com. Libby embraces each day and strives to find new ways of helping team members at their various stages of volunteer and ministry journeys. Her work with Cru, IJM and Freedom 58 keep her busy. She relieves stress by running and exercise. She made news headlines last June when she was running along a trail about a half mile from the home she and Bob have in Silverthorne when she heard a loud snort and snarling noise. A mother bear charged at her

and chased her up a dead aspen tree. Libby said the bear tried to get to her by standing on her hind legs, with her front feet up and biting at her. Thankfully, the tree was too small for the bear to climb. Libby tried to scare the bear by screaming and kicking at the bear’s snout. After a few minutes of pacing, the bear finally retreated. Libby Swenson is a remarkable woman. She wants you to be empowered to take action wherever you’re at because justice matters. She reminds us, “Everyday, you have the choice to live out justice.” She wants you and me to ask, “What can I do?” For more information on Freedom 58, visit its website freedom58project.com or visit Freedom 58 on Facebook.

A LETTER FROM MAYOR TINA HARRIS HISTORIC DOWNTOWN TAKES CENTER STAGE THIS SUMMER I want to say “Thank You” to all of you who have accepted my challenge to shop local. Your efforts to support Erie businesses are one of the many reasons things are looking up in Downtown. Every day, more and more of us are discovering all that our newly revitalized Historic Downtown has to offer. The list of businesses keeps growing but as of today it includes: insurance agencies, brew pubs, restaurants, chiropractors, law offices, beauty and barber shops, nutrition experts, music and dancing lessons, a preschool, pizza, ice cream, coffee and more! Your continued support of these businesses benefits our community, our economy and our environment. To all of you who fall into the category of someone who rarely or has never visited Downtown, I have a challenge for you. Take a look at the lineup of summer events, place your favorites on your calendar, invite your neighbors and head on down to Downtown!

ERIE TOWN FAIR - MAY 16

We know that one of the top reasons people call Erie “home” is because of our small town feel. And no single event celebrates this feeling better than the Erie Town Fair. What can I say? It’s a classic that should not to be missed. I’m especially looking forward to seeing Hazel Miller. Shout out to the Chamber for bringing Hazel and her band back to Erie.

ERIE BREWFEST - JUNE 13

Tap into the growing craft beer scene and join us for the 3rd Annual Erie Brewfest on June 13th. Enjoy sampling beers from over 20 Colorado brewers and local food trucks. The Brewfest will be held on Briggs Street in the heart of Historic Downtown Erie.

ERIE FARMERS’ MARKET THURSDAYS • JUNE 18 - SEPTEMBER 17 5:00 - 8:00 P.M. Last April I met with Kelly Williams, owner and operator of the farmers’ markets

in Louisville and Lafayette to discuss opportunities to bring her expertise to Erie in 2015. Based on her analysis, Kelly has decided to host the Erie Farmers’ Market on Thursday nights in Historic Downtown from June through September. The market will be located on Wells Street between Briggs and Pierce and feature locally grown fruits and vegetables, meats, eggs, wines, artisan breads, honey, coffee, baked goods, fresh salsas, pastas, natural body care, massage and more. The new Erie Farmers’ Market promises to be an exciting shopping experience in a friendly, family atmosphere. Hope to see you down there!

Detective Niemoth was able to identify those responsible for the threats quickly, without incident and arrests were made. he opportunity for a comprehensive check of your health in a convenient setting is coming again to Erie this spring! The Town of Erie’s 9Health Fair offers free and low-cost health screenings for people to keep their health in check. The fair is open to anyone 18 and older. Participants will be allowed into the facility when the Fair opens at 7:00 a.m. NEW THIS YEAR! An important change has been made to 9Health Fair requirements. Based on the most current research findings, the 9HF Medical Advisory Committee has determined that fasting is not required (optional) for blood screenings. “Our Medical Advisory Committee has been watching the evidence grow over the years, and are now confident that removing the fasting requirement from 9Health Fair will not compromise the outcome of the results,” Jim Goddard, President and CEO of 9Health Fair explains. “We are excited about this medical advancement and we hope that it will now be even easier for Coloradans to own their health!” To best prepare for a blood draw, drink plenty of water and continue to take prescription medications. People with diabetes should not fast. Check with your medical provider for specific recommendations. VOLUNTEERS WE NEED YOU! Volunteers are needed to help run Erie’s 9Health Fair! Both medical and non-medical volunteers are needed to draw blood, manage registration, provide screenings and more. arch 5, 2015 - Weld County, CO - While fringe opposition groups prepare to launch campaigns aimed at curbing the oil and gas industry in Colorado, in Weld County a grassroots group of citizens has sprung up to educate Coloradans about fracking and ensure the local community continues to prosper in a safe and healthy environment. The ECWW promotes education and awareness of responsible energy develop-ment in Colorado, one of the most highly regulated states in the nation. “The last thing our state needs right now is any more out-of-state efforts to ban fracking. We all benefit from the increased funding for schools, roads and thousands of jobs,” said Energy Council of West Weld chairman and former Firestone Mayor Chad Auer. Fringe activist groups, whose ultimate goal is to ban fracking, have lately attempted to gain traction in locations as unexpected as Denver. Even the Governor’s Blue Ribbon Oil and Gas Task Force came under attack for not going far enough and some of these groups asked the Governor to immediately ban fracking in Colorado by executive order. The Energy Council of West Weld is for responsible energy development in Colorado and reasonable compromise, representing the mainstream views in Colorado. “We can all enjoy our Colorado lifestyle in peace if we keep our facts straight and our community informed,” said Chad Auer. The Energy Council of West Weld is a diverse grassroots team of business and community leaders; our mission is to keep Weld County on the path to a bright future. The ECWW is inviting more citizens to join its growing membership as it continues to help lead our communities in the right direction.

Go Solar for $0 Down main reason people go solar through TandheSolarCity is because it is $0 money down does not cost the homeowner anything out of pocket to go solar. After the solar panels are installed, the homeowner just pays their electricity bill to SolarCity instead of paying their electricity bill to United Power or Xcel Energy. They will still receive a statement from United Power or Xcel Energy but it will only be for the Facility Charge. Also, the monthly payment to Solarcity for electricity also pays off the customer’s solar system. To add on to the already awesome program Solarcity is offering, the IRS is also giving out a Solar Investment Tax Credit which is equal to 30% of the total system cost. Lastly, United Power is also providing a Solar Rebate with a maximum of $1800.00 as long as the customer has it inspected by United Power by July 1st, 2015. That means that Erie customers need to jump on this before that Rebate from United Power drops from $1800 to $1000 maximum come July 1st, 2015. That $1800(maximum) could pay your electric bill with SolarCity for almost a year in most situations! That is HUGE!! Who wouldn’t want no electric bill for a year and receive a sizable tax credit for going solar! If you are an Xcel Energy Customer, they are also offering an amazing monthly rebate for the first 10 years!

Last Call for United Power $1800 Max Solar Rebate United Power will be lowering the solar rebate for all solar systems installed after July 1st, 2015. Since the average install timeline for solar is 3-5 months, Erie Customers who are currently with United Power need to call now to get solar immediately to take advantage of the $1800 rebate.

Every Day’s a Good Hair Day at Halcyon Salon and Spa Edited by Kelly Fordyce Martindale

E

rie’s Halcyon Salon and Spa is a culmination of love embodied by a mom and her two daughters. Mom, Lauren Roberts, with daughters Taylor and Whitney, along with the help of husband and dad, Mark, have invested their lives into this new family owned and operated business. These women have combined their skills as stylists and savvy business owners and offer clients a full range of hair care services for all ages and hair types. Their massage services and upscale skin care services start in April. They offer the Aveda product line exclusively. Why Aveda? The women agreed, “We’ve been an Aveda family since the mid 80’s. Aveda is an impressive company with global environmental objectives that are nothing short of remarkable.” They recalled a time when Aveda discontinued making their favorite conditioner so that no precious resources would be depleted. “Imagine putting the environment before your bottom line…unheard of back then,” they explained. The Aveda philosophy reflects that of this family, all being Colorado natives. The family hand selected Erie because of the close-knit, small town feel the area offers. They said, “The ambiance of Erie is literally unparalleled in the metro area.” Their location on highway 7 in Village Vista shopping center could not be more ideal being a couple miles west of I25 or a bit east of 287. It’s easy access from any direction, including Broomfield, Lafayette, Superior, Louisville, Firestone, Dacono, and Frederick. Surprisingly, their customers extend those boundaries in all directions, coming from as far as Fort Collins and Colorado Springs. Not so surprising is that the commute is immaterial once you visit this quaint salon and experience their upscale customer service. Lauren, Taylor, and Whitney designed the rustic-lux décor, filled with exposed brick and reclaimed wood; and Mark made it happen. Owning and operating an Aveda Concept salon is a dream come true for this family who believes so firmly in the mission and business objectives of Aveda. Their excellent services utilizing the high quality product line and support of Aveda has positioned this family to embrace every day in the salon with passion and appreciation. Together they have created an extraordinary force in the industry that will be difficult to match. How did it all start? Taylor, an owner and master stylist, has over 13 years’ experience. The girls call her the “hair ninja”! She is a natural and wanted to start beauty school immediately following high school. Her parents begged her to go to college for one year (but deep down inside they hoped she would continue). One year is exactly what Taylor gave them before starting at the prestigious Xenon International Hair Academy. She graduated top of her class and

began her dream career. She has been in the Aveda network for a number of years and was personally trained by an Aveda Purefessional. Whitney, also an owner and stylist, graduated from Colorado Mountain College in Steamboat Springs. She loved to snowboard! She worked from home in Breckenridge and was able to hit the mountain several times a day. She was living the dream but struggled to find her true professional passion. After moving to Denver, Whitney decided to start at the Aveda Institute in Denver. The moment she held a pair of shears she knew where she was supposed to be. Lauren, mom, owner and stylist, is a 30 year real estate veteran. She has held a number of high ranking positions with large corporate organizations over the years. She owned a very successful real estate company and created industry changing workflow software for real estate professionals who specialize in foreclosure and short sale properties. Even with the successes she enjoyed, Lauren grew impatient with the corporate culture and longed for a change. So with an early retirement in her sights, she too enrolled at the Aveda Institute in Denver (with daughter, Whitney). The rest is (as they say) history! As if the credentials and passion of the owners isn’t enough, Halcyon has several other stylists to choose from. Callie Jordan is a talented educator at the Aveda Institute and an Aveda Purefessional (compare this accolade to winning American Idol for stylists). Simona Truong, an Aveda Institute graduate (with high honors), is amazing with a pair of shears and has a keen eye for color. Kylee Carpenter, an Aveda Institute graduate, will be joining the team in April and is also an experienced, skilled, and creative makeup artist from a professional makeup artist school in Los Angeles. Jamie Young has such an artistic eye for color and cut and is so special, her clients LOVE her! This is complimented by her vast Aveda knowledge and experience. Lauren Roberts said, “We are so incredibly moved by this community – we have been embraced by the residents and town officials alike -- we never doubted this is where we wanted to open our salon, but

to suggest we have been overwhelmed by the support we have received, is simply an understatement. In my entire career, nothing has felt so right. We look forward to the opportunity to give back to this wonderful community.” Halcyon Salon and Spa is located at 3140 Village Vista Drive, Suite 103, in Erie. Their hours are: Saturday, Sunday, Monday: 10a – 6p Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday: 10a – 8p. Call for an appointment at 720.449.6228 or email at thescoop@salonhalcyon.com and like them on Facebook too!

halcyon is a type of kingfisher bird that nests by the sea where sea-charming winds blow, so that its eggs are protected during the nesting period. the phrase Halcyon days today also signifies prosperity, joy, liberation and, of course, tranquility. the ancient Greek myth of halcyon is a tender story of love and commitment, which explains the Halcyon sunny days of calm seas and winds. the Halcyon days or Alkionides Meres, as Greeks call them, appear in mid January every year.

Sweets Ice Cream and Coffee Creates Community in Old Town By Jan Sciacca

W

hen Sweets Ice Cream and Coffee, 502 Briggs Street, opened January 9, it was a dream fulfilled for owner John and Amy Jaquat. As Erie residents, Amy and John saw a need for “a family place” in Old Town Erie, it seemed a natural fit to bring ice cream and coffee to the area. When a vacancy in the historic district occurred, John and Amy jumped at the opportunity. They dreamed of offering a place where families and all Erie residents would enjoy great coffee, ice cream, and pastries. The name “Sweets,” came from the nickname of the Jaquat’s 4-year-old daughter, Elena. The business had its grand opening, fittingly, on Valentine’s Day. Ice cream is offered from Glacier Ice Cream and Gelato in Boulder and the shops baked goods are original creations from any one of three chefs. One can also order breakfast foods such as burritos, quiche, and cinnamon rolls, which were the idea of Manager Mark Anderson. The cinnamon rolls are the next best-selling item, after ice cream.

Building community and helping grow the historic area of Erie with life and fun is important to Sweets. Mark exclaims, “We are about fun! You can’t stay mad with ice cream! Try it. Better yet, come in and get happy!” He jokes that although most customers with a desire for sweets, come from Erie, Lafayette, Louisville, Longmont, Dacono, Frederick, and Firestone, on occasion, a stray “Boulderite” even finds his or her way there. Most clients are under 4’ tall and accompanied by a large adult. Sweets is about kids, families, and the residents of Erie. One can find business meetings being held there, teachers grabbing a hot cup of coffee and heading to class and groups meeting there because Sweets is fun and inviting. Sweets offers catering and pastry services. In addition to ordering cakes, cupcakes, pies and pastries, check Sweets’ Facebook page for other specials. Manager Mark Alexander is from Longmont. He comes with a background in culinary, catering and business. He has four

daughters and has been married since 1990. You can find him in the kitchen nearly every day or walking the floor greeting the princes and princesses. Outside of the business, Mark loves to cook and create new and unique desserts and dishes. Outside of the kitchen, he is a seminary student working on a Master’s degree in Theology. Family time though is his favorite activity. Stefanie Berryhill is one of Sweets’ pastry chefs/designers. She is attending Escoffier Culinary Academy in Boulder studying pastry arts. She has a flair for the details in design and baking. If you have eaten cupcakes or muffins from Sweets, you’ve likely experienced her skills. Jordan Sanders is another of the chefs at Sweets. She comes as a graduate of Escoffier in both culinary and pastry arts. She brings a bubbly disposition in the kitchen and out on the floor. She is always coming up with ideas on new pies and cakes that sell out regularly. Courtney Lamb is a great asset to the team as an “Organizational Guru.” She trains the teens who are hired and leads with a kind heart. If you want Sweets to cater an event or make a special cake or cupcake order, Courtney is the person to contact. Sweets has skilled baristas. Heide Vair serves delicious coffee creations and comes to Sweets with 14 years of experience. Hope Alexander is a great team member who can be found most often at the machine known as Sophia. Then there is Ryan True, a barista in training. As a high school senior, he is being trained to make beautiful latte art designs. In addition, other Erie High School students are employed during the evenings and weekends to serve you ice cream. Dozens of comments and reviews from Sweets’ Facebook page indicate Sweets is exactly what Erie needs. Mark remembers

having a family come in every week, sometimes more than once a week. They are an elderly couple, with a daughter who provides care for them. In an early conversation, Mark learned that the daughter would come into the Sweets’ location decades ago, when it was a general store, and have ice cream at the counter. “To hear them relive the times here and come back now in the 21st century takes my breath away,” Mark replies. When you visit Sweets Ice Cream and Coffee, you’re in for gratifying time. Enjoy! Sweets is open Monday-Thursday 7-8, Fri-Sat 7-9, Sunday 10-5. The phone number is 720.460.1821. Contact info is www.sweetsicecream.com and mark@ sweetsicecream.com.
