Erie’s DanceSpace Advances to “Worlds” By Jan Sciacca
D
anceSpace Performing Arts Academy, owned by Reagan Hoeft and located at 3120 Village Vista Dr, Erie, is making a name for itself . . . nationally. In three short years, the studio has gone from opening its doors to being a nationally-ranked dance studio. The studio and the passion of its staff are giving the children of this area an opportunity to compete all over the country and the chance to have a future in dance. Now 8 young girls in the DanceSpace Diva’s Youth Pom Team, ages 10-13, who worked hard and excelled in national competition in Anaheim, CA have received a Paid Bid to compete at The Summit World Dance Championship at Disney World on May 2 and 3. This competition is the equivalent to a “world” dance competition for their age. Although with the bid, the dancers’ expenses for hotel, entry fees, and transportation around Orlando, are covered, their airfare, food and miscellaneous expenses are not. The dancers’ and their parents have been steadfast in their commitment to make this dream come true. Now they hope the community will rally around the mission to help them fulfill their dream. The extra money needed to cover the expenses to the competition are $6000, which covers the cost of airfare for 10, food and an extra night of lodging that isn’t covered from the bid. Since

the competition is next month, time is of the essence. If you want to make a difference for these young ladies, contact DanceSpace Performing Arts Academy at (720) 255-2619 What an amazing journey it’s been for this young Erie academy. After a fulfilling career in Los Angeles, owner and artistic director Reagan Hoeft opened DanceSpace, offering her first classes in August of 2012. Erie was selected as a location because of its family-friendly environment and lack of a dance academy. Other areas served by the DanceSpace are Brighton, Lafayette, Westminster, Broomfield and Frederick. Reagan’s vision was to create a “second home” for her dancers where they can feel free to be who they are and ultimately thrive in dance and life. Reagan is blessed with a wonderfully supportive family that has been her driving force and inspiration in all she does. The faculty and staff at DanceSpace know the time they spend with these children is precious and that “dance lessons are life lessons”. Reagan affirms, “We take our role in the lives of these children very seriously and that is felt from the front door of the studio to the final bow of class.” The studio’s progressive syllabus ensures that each dancer will possess the proper skills needed to advance to the next level of class. This criterion enables the seasoned dancers

to further advance while encouraging new dancers to learn freely without feelings of frustration or intimidation. Summer Christensen, mom of 10-year old Courtney says, “In one year our daughter has grown from liking dance to passionately loving dance! DanceSpace took her under their wing and molded her into a confident young lady who is ready to take on the world!” DanceSpace serves dancers age 2-adult and teach all forms of dance - Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Hip Hop, Lyrical, Contemporary, Parent and Tot, Pom, Turns and Leaps, and Yoga. One class called the All-Star/Performance Company began with 6 girls and has grown to 33 dancers with 31 girls and 2 boys. These dancers range in age from 5-17 and have been awarded numerous scholarships, title awards, and over-all high point awards. Dancers train in all forms of dance and also perform at community events. A majority of the academy’s employees live in the surrounding areas, with many living in Vista Ridge. Locals consist of
Director Reagan Hoeft, All-Star Director: Chelsea Incorvaia, Faculty: Diana FantanoHoffman, Samantha Pirrallo, Audrey Gibson, Megan Farley, Amanda McIntire, Emily Gale, Jake Sheets. Staff : Robin Jensen, Allison Fry, Erin Colohan. A full summer program is planned including camps, classes, and intensives. Reagan declares she has many memorable experiences of “firsts” since opening the academy, but that some of her most amazing memories are of regular weekly classes, inclass performances, dancers receiving their costumes, or the first time a dancer puts on their tap shoes.

What’s On My Mind Kelly Martindale, Publisher What’s Under This Costume? this, and I Why would I cry I read cried. over something like this? Because I really want to Finding Superman
Imagine you’re Superman or Superwoman, but you’ve forgotten who you are. So then you are only Clark Kent, going to work each day in your suit and glasses. One day, an old man taps you on the shoulder and says: “Excuse me, but you’re actually Superman and you can fly.” But that’s absurd and you tell him so. “Seriously,” he says. “Go to that phone booth and take off that costume that makes you Clark Kent and you will see that you’re already Superman and you can fly. But until you ‘see’ who you are, you cannot ‘be’ who you are.” So then, who are you being today? Have you forgotten who you are? Do you want to fly? Me too… —Ted Dekker (one of my favorite authors)
be who I am meant to be. It seems, sometimes, I’m supposed to be doing something beyond what I am doing currently. I don’t feel trapped. But I do feel stuck. It doesn’t have to do with money or geography or relationships or character or morality. It’s even deeper than all that. Who is Kelly Martindale?
Do you ever wonder, “Who am I?” Until I ‘see’ the truth of who I ALREADY am, I will only be who I am today. That is not enough. I know there is more. But how do I get to the ‘more?’ How do I find who is trapped inside of me? And why did life’s experiences have to be so tough and tragic that they threaten to smother the “true” me? Does the past have the power to draw us backward? Does it cause us to settle for mediocrity? If our focus is behind us, how do we move forward without stumbling?
Survey Notifications Are in the Mail!
2015 Town of Erie Citizen Survey Update
On
Friday, April 3, 2015, the National Research Center will mail pre-survey notifications to 3,000 randomly selected Erie households. The postcard notifications will invite these selected households to participate in the 2015 Town of Erie Citizen Survey. The actual surveys will be mailed on Friday, April 10th.
View Pre-Survey Notification The 2015 Town of Erie Citizen Survey has a statistically valid margin of error of +/- 3%. With this margin of error, you may conclude that when 60% of survey respondents report that a particular service is “excellent” or “good” somewhere between 57% and 63% of all Erie residents are likely to feel the same way. This is the second year the Town of Erie has contracted to participate in the National Citizen Survey (NCS). The previous survey was conducted in 2013 and distributed to 1,200 households and had a margin of error
of +/- 5%. The NCS is a service of the National Research Center and the International City/ County Management Association (ICMA). The NCS has been designed to complement the work of ICMA’s Center for Performance Measurement. • 2015 Citizen Survey FAQ’s • 2015 Citizen Survey – Coming Soon! • 2013 Citizen Survey Results For more information, please contact Fred Diehl at fdiehl@erieco.gov or 303-9262764.

Why is it that as stability and healthy growth start to happen, fear sets in and then self sabotaging behavior? I’ve read that I am the daughter of the King and that He clothes me in royal robes and I am now pure and clean. If I believe that then why am I walking around in holey jeans and flannel shirts? Where’s that phone booth? I need to see what’s under this costume that needs shed.

A LETTER FROM MAYOR TINA HARRIS ERIE POLICE STATION & MUNICIPAL COURT BUILDING UPDATE One year ago we asked for your support in making a longterm investment in our community. We asked you to vote “Yes” for our new Police Station and Municipal Court building. In exchange for your support, the Town promised to deliver you a good value on your investment. As we all know, voters overwhelmingly approved funding for the new building. You did your part by supporting this strategic investment and for that we say “Thank You!” I am happy to report your confidence in us was well placed as we are now delivering on our promise to you – the citizens of Erie. Good news for your pocketbook! For a homeowner with a residential property
valued at $300,000, taxes will increase by $20.97 per year - and not the $36 per year we previously estimated. We are happy to pass these savings on to you.
THE FINANCING:
The sale of the General Obligation Bonds for the construction of the new Police Station and Municipal Court building was successfully completed. In fact, S&P rated the bonds AA+, one level below its highest AAA rating. The effective rate of the bonds is 3.24%. This rate is below the 5% rate assumed for the ballot question approved by voters on April 1, 2014. The ballot question that was approved established the maximum debt allowable as $6.2 million with a total repayment cost not to exceed $11.6 million. However, after the bond sale was complete, the actual total repayment cost will be $9.8 million. This represents a saving of $1.8 million to Erie residents over the life of the bonds.
We are fortunate to have a team of experienced staff and outside counsel who work diligently to maintain our town’s strong financial position. Speaking for the entire Board of Trustees, I commend our Town Administrator A.J. Krieger, Finance Director Steve Felten, our underwriters Stifel, Nicolaus & Company and our bond counsel Butler Snow, LLP.
THE BUILDING:
Immediately following the election results, Department of Public Works staff, the project management team and contractors began working diligently to ensure construction would meet the Board’s goal for a summer 2015 completion. It was late August when site work began. In November crews poured the foundations. During the first quarter of this year, wall panels were poured on site, allowed to cure and then “tilted” into place; steel columns and roof joists were erected
and the framing of the curved entry wall began. Thank you to our Director of Public Works Gary Behlen and Project Coordinator Raelyn Ferrara for keeping this critical capital improvement project moving forward. Managing all of our capital projects responsibly and transparently is central to maintaining Erie as a quality community that is financially viable for the short and long term. And that is what we will continue to do. Promise! Sincerely,
Mayor Tina Harris Town of Erie

The Erie Farmers Market Arrives
Coming Soon $394,900
By Jan Sciacca
J
ust as the purpose of the Erie Consumer Report is to “create community by connecting neighbors,” Kelly Williams’s goal is the same but says it this way, “Get fresh, buy local!” The Erie Farmers Market is arriving on June 18 and much is being done before it opens. Entrepreneur and Market Owner Kelly Williams, is no stranger to the Farmers Market scene. Kelly, who operates as Kelly Enterprises LTD, began her enterprise 7 years ago in Louisville with the creation of the Louisville Farmers Market. Its inception sprang from a need in the community, a passion for fresh, healthy food, Kelly’s love of community, and having a background in marketing for natural foods. Three years ago she started the Lafayette Farmers Market. Now the Erie Farmers Market is launching and for all the same reasons as the others. Kelly loves bringing foods, families and communities together. The Erie Farmers Market seeks to support Colorado farms and local businesses by creating a vibrant and inviting marketplace for both its customers and vendors. Kelly envisions opening the market with 25 vendors that bring local, healthy foods and services to the town. Her goal is to grow the farmers market slowly every year, attracting quality and diverse vendors that reflect the needs and wants of Erie residents. Kelly shares, “The Town of Erie government has been
tremendously enthusiastic and supportive of my efforts to create a dynamic marketplace for Erie residents. The community of Erie and Erie businesses have been overwhelmingly responsive to the idea and have stepped up in many ways including sponsoring the market, offering to help out in necessary ways, offering input and suggestions and making me feel very welcome here. “ Kelly firmly states, “By supporting the farmers market and purchasing local produce, goods and services, we directly benefit the vendors, our local economy and our families. The only way to sustain the market is by sales. Vendors won’t return if their sales don’t support overhead. The only way to grow the market and continue to attract quality vendors is by having happy farms and vendors. The Erie Farmers Market supports nonprofits by donating one booth per market. The market supports the Erie Baseball Club in sponsorship, will donate gift certificates to fundraisers, to the Erie Library and any other Erie organization that it can benefit.” With seven years of experience in the farmers market arena, Kelly loves creating an environment of happy memories and a place where people love to come. She remembers overhearing a young boy at one of the markets tell his mother that he loved being there and wished they could do that every week. The rest of the staff at Kelly Enterprises
Fabulous Ranch in Erie Commons 1053 Eichhorn Drive, Erie include Sam McCrossen, who is a teenager and student at Monarch High, and John Birch, an Erie Resident. Sam has been the operations manager during the markets for the past two years and the audio tech for the music that is hosted weekly. John is tasked with recruiting sponsors, as well as other management and customer relation roles. Kelly is a mother to Hannah 18 and Luke 13. She does a lot of Bikram Yoga and used to compete a few years back. (She laughed as she said this because she realized that many readers would wonder how yoga could be competitive.) Kelly also teaches art to kids. She also enjoys cooking, learning as much as she can about health, beauty and nutrition. Her pastimes include hiking biking, skiing, traveling and art. Kelly’s aim is to bring the best market to the Town of Erie that reflects the Erie community. She welcomes any suggestions the community may have. The Erie Farmers Market will be on Wells Street, between Pierce and Briggs, Thursdays, 5-8 pm, June 18-Sept 19. Kelly can be reached at 303-902 2451, Kellyenterprisesltd@gmail. com., getfreshmarkets.com. and on Facebook at eriesfarmersmarket.

Field Trips Enhance a Child’s Love of Learning Meghan Carlile, M.Ed. & Pamela Piekarski, M.Ed.
F
ield trips have a time-honored history in the field of education. They have long been a way for teachers to invite exploration, cultural enrichment, academic focus, and introduce children to a world outside the classroom. At Exploring Minds Academy, we not only offer field trips we offer the learning that keeps fresh those skills learned throughout the school year. What this means for your school age child is our teachers seek to create lessons within the fun. This summer we are exploring the world of Habitats. We have divided this unit over the months of the summer into smaller focuses – People, Animals and Birds. We incorporate the exciting facts about each area into our field trips, our science time, our journals and much more. Our School Aged children have the privilege of venturing outside of the school each day to places such as the Denver Zoo, the Natural History Museum and much more. These types of learning field trips are integrated each week with other fields trips such as swimming, bowling, roller skating, movie day at a local theatre watching the newest feature, etc. For our younger children, we bring these learning presentations into their classrooms so they learn new information while having fun participating with the guest speaker in their interactive presentation. “Research shows that young children learn best through manipulation of materials and hands-on experiences, planned by knowledgeable teachers.” (Gronlund, Gaye) Our parents know that when we bring in a reptile specialist, have a librarian come in for story time or have a dentist come and talk about teeth it is to create a love of learning. Our teachers create lesson plans so they are consciously building new language, developing critical thinking and questioning skills while introducing new information that is not used in the same way on a dayto-day basis. Our children learn that the dentist doesn’t just take care our teeth; he may be someone’s mom or dad, like to hike or have a special pet at home.. They start to recognize that reptiles are not just in books or on TV, they are real, can be felt, have different characteristics, be dangerous, scary, or wonderful! Field trips allow each child at Exploring Minds Academy to apply their understanding from books to the real world they live in. At Exploring Minds Academy we make fieldtrips an important part of our curriculum – both in your younger classrooms and with our school age campers. Our teachers teach with intention through conversations to support learning that creates a love for future knowledge and exploration. Do they desire

At Exploring Minds Academy, we open the world of possibility each day by creating a love of learning. We invite you to call for a tour and get more information about our programs that include our School Age Summer Camp and find out about our daily field trips and our teachers that encourage our children to explore the world they live in. Erie Police Offer Tips to Help Avoid Becoming a Victim of Scams Never provide your personal information Erie Police Department has recently telephone. Tandheexperienced an increase in reported scam Real Estate Scams – Some real estate to anyone who calls you or requests remote access to your computer. fraud incidents. Below are some of the types of scams being utilized by scammers in the Town of Erie and throughout the metro area and some tips to help avoid falling victim to these acts. Telephone Scams – These are becoming more and more frequent. In these situations, a scammer will call residents and attempt to convince them to provide their personal identifying information. Scammers have posed as law enforcement officials, IRS Agents, and representatives of utility companies. Scammers often use intimidation tactics and may tell an unsuspecting person they have criminal charges pending, a warrant pending, they owe money, or they threaten to disconnect their utility services. The scammers will then convince the unsuspecting person they must provide banking information, open up bank accounts, send checks or money orders, or purchase prepaid gift cards or Green Dot cards to avoid arrest or losing utility services. Other scammers will use a reward tactic. In these cases, a scammer may tell an unsuspecting person they have won money, are due a refund, or have inherited money. Remember: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is! Scammers may be in other states or even other countries, which leads them to try and commit the fraud over the
scams involve scammers trying to rent out a property they do not own or have any type of legal right to lease. These can be common with classified ads such as Craigslist and rental sites such as trulia.com. This is usually done over the phone where the scammer will request payment for the property you are interested in renting. In most cases, the rent amount is an incredible deal for the market. Be aware scammers may draft up a bogus rental agreement and send you a key that does not fit the property. If you are looking to rent a property, some tips include checking the County Assessors webpage to verify the property owner’s information and check real estate websites to confirm whether or not the property is for sale. Computer Scams – Scammers will pose as computer technical support with companies such as an internet provider, Microsoft or Norton Antivirus. In this role, they contact unsuspecting persons and attempt to collect identifying information such as names, dates of birth, email addresses, addresses, phone numbers, etc. These scammers typically operate under the ruse there is some sort of problem with your computer or your computer needs an update. Ultimately, these types of scammers attempt to gain control of your computer to have access to your personal files, passwords, and accounts.

IRS Fraud – If your taxes were filed fraudulently by someone else, go to www.irs. gov and type in fraud. Or call the IRS at 1-800366-4484. You will then need to complete form 14039. Remember, never provide your personal identifying information, social security number, credit card information, or banking information to anyone who contacts you unsolicited. If you question the validity of a person calling you, collect their name and contact the company or agency directly to verify if the caller is legitimate. Only use company or agency phone numbers you locate independently by going online or using a phone book. Never use a phone number provided by an unknown caller or a number that shows up on caller ID. Scammers can use a process called “Spoofing” to make your caller ID display a legitimate company
name. Scammers can also use “Spoofing” to make email messages appear to come from legitimate agencies or companies. If you feel you have been a victim of fraud or identity theft, please visit the Erie Police Department’s website and download the appropriate packet (Identity Theft, Forgery or Embezzlement) to begin the reporting process.

From refugee to aristocracy: Erie woman’s life in war-torn Germany As told to Jim Stull, Author, Images of America: Erie Editor’s Note: This is the first part of a six part series. The person featured in this series wishes to remain anonymous
Part one: Caught between Hitler and Stalin Note: In 1939, Germany’s Hitler and Russia’s Stalin agreed to take over Poland, dividing it between them at the Vistula River. In 1941, Hitler’s troops invaded Russia, beginning a major conflict between the two countries, known in Germany as the Eastern Front and globally as World War II.
Life in a war zone In 1939, at the beginning of World War II, Hitler’s troops marched through our little village of Hennersdorf in the province of Silesia in Germany. In 1942, my mother died. My father was still alive and served as a teacher in a nearby village. Eventually, he was sent to the Eastern Front, where the Germans were fighting the Russians. In January of 1945, all we heard was that he was missing in action and we never heard any more about it. We tried to find out more from the Red Cross. Because they were
an international organization, they often received information before it was made public; but they were unable to help. Note: My grandson found out within the last five years or so that my father was sent to the area around Stettin to fight. It is now part of Poland, and cemeteries for German soldiers are well preserved there. During the last days of the war, the Germans had neither sufficient weaponry nor manpower to be effective against their enemies. Because of the shortage of soldiers, even men over 50—referred to as “the elderly”—were being called to the War and sent to the Front (der volkssturm). The Germans could no longer hold the front lines and were being pushed back by Russian troops. Germany’s government was becoming less efficient; they had little control and were not getting much information about the War. In February of 1945, I was 13 and my brother was 11. We lived in a village of about 2,000 people with our aunt. She had never married, but she helped to raise ten kids—including her siblings and her sister’s children. She never complained, even

though she had a difficult life—especially after the war. My grandmother was too old to care for us. Note: From February 4 to 11, 1945, Franklin Roosevelt, Winston Churchill, Joseph Stalin, and other military leaders met at the Yalta Conference to discuss how to re-establish the war-torn countries of Europe following World War II. Russian forces were in control of Poland. Stalin declared that the German territories of Pomerania, Silesia, and Brandenburg now belonged to Poland. The new German border was the Oder and Neisse Rivers. This forced some 8 million Germans to relocate further west into Germany. Stalin was persuasive with the United States and Great Britain as they needed Russia’s support to end the war with Japan and to bring about democratic governments in Europe. When the Poles took
over Hennersdorf, they renamed it Henrykow. On February 18, we could hear cannons and airplanes bombarding nearby; school had been canceled because it was not safe for children to be outside. That evening, we had taken mattresses and blankets downstairs into the living room; we didn’t want to be upstairs. Part two will be published in the May issue.

Colorado Art Glass: Family-owned Creators of Stained Glass Compiled by Jan Sciacca
A
rt glass can be both beautiful and affordable, as well as from Erie! Colorado Art Glass owners and Erie residents Cathy and Kevin King are recognized as respected creators of stained glass, since the company’s inception in 1999. The term “stained glass” or leaded glass pertains to the use of multiple pieces of glass held together with the use of lead came, solder and typically zinc framing. This process uses the time proven method and superior craftsmanship. While there are other methods used to create stained glass, Colorado Art Glass only uses quality products to fabricate their projects. The entry to a home or business, along with bathroom windows are the most popular in placement of art glass. Other examples of uses include: a lit niche, glass cabinet doors, transom windows, pantry and French doors, garage doors, as well as privacy screens for decks. In addition to new fabrication, Colorado Art Glass also provides assistance in renovation and restoration projects. The business originated in Dublin, Ohio. Having taken classes from a Master Artisan, Cathy learned the traditional methods of the art of stained glass. After designing and fabricating double sidelights for their new home, their builder favored their work, which led to working with multiple custom builders in the area. What originated as personal desires to install art glass in their home, quickly turned into a business through referrals and those seeking an affordable quality product. Previously operating in Ohio under the name Artistic Glass Design, the business transitioned to Colorado and now operates as Colorado Art
Glass. Realizing Erie would be a great place to raise a family and that the community has a lot to offer, the Kings made Erie their home. Their clientele now extend across the Front Range, as well as in metro Denver. While Colorado Art Glass is a growing company, most of their business growth has been from repeat customers and referrals. The Kings have structured their business to cater to their clients. Everything to begin the art glass project is brought directly to the
homeowner or business. Design concepts are examined, the needs and desires of the clients considered and accurate measurements completed. The client is able to glean ideas from catalogs and view glass samples in their own lighting as it changes throughout the day. Once the design concept is chosen, a scale drawing is completed for approval, and the finalization of glass selections are made. The scale drawing is then converted to an actual pattern, where the glass is then cut, leaded and soldered together in our studio. Once the fabrication process is complete, the artwork is cemented, polished and delivered to our client and installed Colorado Art Glass’s installation is done

in a manner that is efficient and professional. The art glass panel is secured on the inside of the existing window to offer protection from the elements and to ensure a clean air tight install. All of the company’s art glass panels can be removed, should clients relocate and wish to take their stained glass with them. Kevin and Cathy have been married 32 years, and have four children - Evan, Chloe, Chelsea Tarrier and “adopted” son-in-law Ben Tarrier along with two Grandchildren. The Kings enjoy biking, boating, skiing, camping and traveling. Most of all, they enjoy spending time with family. Cathy is the face of Colorado Art Glass and strives to provide impeccable customer service and exceptional quality products. Her true skill as an Artisan is demonstrated through the fabrication of the actual art glass panel. Kevin is on staff in a ministry role at LifeBridge. His role in their family business is both administrative and creative. In addition, he utilizes his art skills with both conceptual and scale drawings.
