What’s On My Mind
Vol. 2, Issue 4
Kelly Martindale, Publisher
Spring Cleaning Starts in the Mind and Ends in the Heart
W
ell, I did it. I took a small load of my clothes and some electronic equipment to a Thrift Store. And I actually took the bags and boxes inside and LEFT THEM! Everybody who knows me personally, knows I have clutter everywhere. I don’t believe I am a “hoarder” but I do cling to my “stuff” with an unhealthy grip. I know I have to get a handle on it as I hate walking through every room in my house and seeing “stuff” stacked and shoved in every space available. My “stuff” is causing me anxiety. The change of weather and wanting the fresh air in my house, inspires me to want to spring clean my home. But trying to tackle the “stuff” starts in my own mind and I’ve realized I don’t follow through on some tasks simply because my mind does not want to go there. Here are four reasons why: 1. Sorting causes me to stumble on memories of life before two of my children died; 2. Purging causes me to realize how much money I’ve spent and I am embarrassed about that; 3. Throwing out causes me to wonder if there is someone who could really use the items; 4. Discovering treasures that are ruined by mice and flooding causes me to regret that I didn’t really treasure them at all. A huge part of me simply wants to close the doors to all the “stuff” and go on with life as usual. But there is a small part of me that wants the peace and contentment that comes from order, from simplicity and
from restoration. That small part of me is growing and it desires healing and a true, new beginning. I’ve only had two years in my entire life where harmony, stability and tranquility were a part of every single day. I want that in my life again. Perhaps you have the same dilemma… Do you have “stuff” piled up that needs taken care of? What stops you from accomplishing what needs to be done? Why is it so hard to do something that will be good for us in the long run but we avoid it? So, I must get rid of a lot of my possessions and to do that I must figure out what I should keep and what I should let go of. Here are a few ways I was able to let go of the items I took to the Thrift Store: Step 1: Possessions are belongings. But are they assets? Are they special? Some possessions are simply that; something you possess and don’t really know why, like three bicycles. I can only ride one bike at a time. Figure out why you keep what you have. Step 2: Go look at it. Pick one small space to declutter (a corner, a closet, a shelf ). Sort: Keep it, give it, throw it. According to the television shows on hoarding, you throw away immediately! The give pile gets taken immediately! There are second hand stores and drop boxes all over the area. And finally, find a home for the keep stuff: if it’s a memory, store it or show it. My sister always says, “Everything should have a home. And it always goes home when you are finished with it.” Step 3: Remember it’s okay to have emotions while you sort, purge, throw, and discover. Sometimes, like in my life, there is a lot of grief to work through as you go through “stuff.” Our “stuff” reminds us of happier times, horrible times, and times we have pushed way back into the deepest

part of ourselves. Be kind to yourself; it’s okay to shut the box and tackle it another day. It’s also okay to be angry. One of my worst days was the flooding in 2013. The rain started on my daughter’s birthday (Alisha who has passed away) and it didn’t end until many photos and other mementoes were saturated and had to be thrown away. I was very angry at God for allowing my children to die and all the memorabilia that I’ve collected that was being ruined by His rain. God held me and let me rant and cry and He also comforted me and reminded me that healing is an ongoing process. Step 4: After you have sorted, purged, thrown, and discovered your one small space; take a step back and enjoy what you accomplished. Take a deep breath. Let it out slowly…feel the peace that overtakes you? That peace is available to each one of us as we take small steps forward to bring order into our lives. That order can start in the house, the garage, your car, and garden spaces. Spring cleaning gets rid of cobwebs and dust bunnies and it shortens the stacks of boxes in closets. But it achieves far more than cleanliness in a living space. In my life, and probably in yours too, as I sort, purge, throw, and discover, I also restore. Yes, it can bring sadness and tears to look at a family photo when there were four children living in my home. It can also bring a wave of sorrow as I bury my face into a baby blanket I handmade for my firstborn son. However, as memories flood my mind I realize that what started as lamenting has turned to rejoicing. I want to get rid of the “stuff” that fills me with regret and pain and make space for all the joyous times that restore my soul. I want to FEEL Step 4. Each organized space will bring a fresh calm, a new order and a peace that only comes from goodness and love, inspired from above.

Black Square Technologies Introduces Hardware Encryption Solution to Solve Data Breaches By Jan Sciacca
M
y ears perked up when I heard, “75% of all organizations have experienced a data/cyber security breach in the past 12 months.” My mind drifted briefly to recent breaches that had made the news such as Target, Sony, IRS and Pentagon, and Anthem Blue Cross; and so many more. In addition, Reuters reports $450 billion in data theft in 2014- $300 billion more than in 2013. Data theft affects every major industry and market sector on our planet. Black Square Technologies, founded by Erie resident Bob Fleming, is causing a big buzz in the data and cyber security world. Black Square Technologies has developed its Enigma devices as affordable, real time hardware encryption that work on Windows or Mac OS and virtually invisible to hackers. As a non-technical person, I was amazed at the simplicity in using the Enigma product. Having read some about data breaches, I have wondered what was right for me or the organizations I work with. In my non-technical explanation, I saw the product (which looks like a thumb drive) encrypt files and folders that only I could open with a password. If I forget the password, no one would be able to open the file. There’s no software-based hint about your first pet or your mother’s maiden name. Users will have to record
their password and remember it on their own. This is not a cloud program or a software program that can be hacked. It’s a portable device that when connected as an encryption device, does not show up in “my computer” or “my PC” drives and devices. It appears invisible! Enigma encrypts your data where it is stored. This can be on your computer’s hard drive, any cloud storage, a backup device, a card reader storage device, a NAS storage device, any USB storage device or a USB enabled computer or tablet. BlackSquare delivers two messages: it’s simple to encrypt data and, ‘If it’s important, encrypt it’. Companies possess sensitive data in many departments. These can include admin, HR, payroll, inventory records, engineering, legal contracts, accounting etc. The data can be encrypted, regardless of the location. And, IT can manage Enigma. Data is secure from all except those who have knowledge of the correct password. And, yes, passwords can be easily changed. Enigma is scalable, and can be used-and managed-by a consumer or a large entity. In companies, everyone who accesses encrypted data will have his or her own Enigma. Prior to Black Square Technologies, Bob was Director of Advanced Concepts

in full disk encryption for Seagate Technologies. Bob received his education from CSULB and UCLA with degrees in Business Management and Economics. Enigma retails at $169.95, and may be purchased from local resellers, or at Amazon, BestBuy or MicroCenter. Enigma
includes a one-year subscription which provides OS updates and new features that BlackSquare develops. For more information, please visit blacksquaretechnologies.com, or email us at info@blacksquaretechnologies.com.

Improving Your Posture
P
oor posture can happen over time and you may not even know you’re starting to slouch or have a protruding head. Some causes of poor posture are regular activities in our daily lives, when prolonged and done every day, such as staring at a computer screen, sitting
side at a 90 degree angle at the elbow, be sure not to shrug your shoulders. With arms against the door frame, lean forward slowly to stretch your chest muscles. •H ead Retraction - Look forward with neutral posture. Bring head directly backwards giving yourself a “double chin”, hold 3 seconds and return back. Don’t tilt your head up or down. • I mmediately improve posture by lengthening your spine and standing up taller by imagining you’re pulling up on
Most people with poor posture will start to experience neck and back pain in time.
Landscaping to Sell Your Home
It
doesn’t matter what season you sell your home, landscaping plays a huge role in Selling it. The first thing Buyer’s see is the curb appeal and whether it feels inviting or not. Landscaping is important because it starts establishing value from the first look at the front of the home. The National Association of Realtors says that a landscaping investment could potentially return 215% in home value while a kitchen renovation may recoup 68%. Consider it money well spent excepting if the neighborhood is run down….nothing seems to overcome that.
in chairs, driving, looking down at a cell phone or tablet, carrying a bag on the same shoulder or carrying small children, and standing for long periods of time. The American Journal of Pain Management says that “Posture effects and moderates every physiological function from breathing to hormonal production. Spinal pain, headache, mood, blood pressure, pulse, and lung capacity are among the functions most easily influenced by posture.” Poor posture with slouched shoulders lead to overstretched upper back muscles and tight chest muscles. Your best defense against poor posture, back/neck pain, and injury is a strong upper body that includes strengthening your core/back muscles and stretching. Most people with poor posture will start to experience neck and back pain in time. The good news is that the main factors affecting posture are not difficult to change and are usually easy for you to control. Here are some quick tips on how to stretch and strengthen some of those muscles: •P ectoral Stretch - stand in the frame of a smaller doorway with arms out to the
a string coming out the top of your head that is attached to all of your vertebrae. • I f you sit for long periods of time, take a break from sitting in a chair every half hour for two minutes to stand, stretch, or walk down the hall. •A ctivities such as walking, swimming, or bicycling are great cardiovascular exercises, while strength training exercises will help the muscles surrounding the core and back to stay strong. A balance of core and back muscle strength is important to help support the upper body and maintain good posture. •P lanks and dumbbell row’s are exercises that work to increase strength in your core, shoulders, and back muscles. If you need help with an exercise program, I offer ladies only fitness groups in Frederick (Thursdays at 7pm) and Niwot 3 times per week (Mon/Fri at 8:30am, Wed 4:15pm), plus mobile personal training where I come to your home. 1. Plan ahead if you plan to sell your home. Start by cleaning up the yard and removing dead branches, weeds, anything broken and of course pet waste. 2. Maintenance may be the most important thing. Make sure downspouts are clean and functional, drain pipes are properly buried and draining water doesn’t sit and pool. 3. Hardscapes like patios and walkways should be level for safety and aesthetics. Fix those wobbly railings or loose steps. 4. Plant health is important because dead and dying plants caste a dim eye towards what others might think of the rest of the home. Remove them. 5. Cut or remove overgrown or old shrubs from sidewalks no matter what sentimental value they may have had before. 6. While the Realtor® is unlocking the lockbox, Buyers are looking at the surrounding area so colorful pots are a warm addition. 7. Use Screening plants to hide unsightly areas like trash can
storage or that cable box that sticks out. 8. Fire pits or outdoor kitchens and water features add charm to a backyard without just looking at a fence. 9. Wash that patio furniture, spray it off and make sure it’s in good condition. 10. Play structures are personal items and it is suggested that they be removed and taken with you. Okay, we’re ready to sell!
