Si Senor! Real Mexican Food: Quality Experience – An Erie “Norm” By Jan Sciacca

M

y friend Mike Martindale is discriminating when it comes to his Mexican food dining experience. Mexican food is one of his favorites and he scours the area for the best chips and salsa, margaritas, and Mexican entrees, in that order. He’ll be the first to tell you to visit Si Senor’s and you “won’t be disappointed.” Gustavo Flores Deleon and his wife Maria Alvarez own Si Senor! Real Mexican Food, located at 3120 Village Vista Drive in Erie and at 1389 Forest Park Circle, Lafayette. Gustavo is proud to be in Erie and proud to be a business owner in the U.S.A. He started his “business career” at 5 years old when he stood in the streets of Mexico, selling ice cream. He boasts that he learned the art of proper ambiance, music selection, pricing and stellar service in Las Vegas, the capital for fine dining. Si Senor’s, which means “Yes, Sir” in English is Gustavo’s moniker, along with his passion for excellent service. A visit to Si Senor’s starts with being greeted by a big smile and “Welcome!” at the door.

Waiters are instructed to have chips and salsa to the client’s tables in 2 minutes or less. Orders are expected to be turned into the kitchen within 8 minutes, unless the patrons want a longer time to make their food selections. A temperature range has been selected that is comfortable for patrons year round – not too cold and not too hot. When a patron requests an item or service, the response is “Si Senor!”

The food is delicious and fresh, with all selections made by “scratch.” Gustavo’s favorite is the Carnitas and Pollo Borracho. Gustavo uses the best brands of liquor, which Mike attests to. He says the liquor used in margaritas is ample, the food is generously proportioned and a better value than other Mexican restaurants he’s visited. He also appreciates Si Senor’s for customizing dishes for him, such as using his favorite fajita chicken instead of the

shredded chicken that the recipe may have called for. Spring is here and Gustavo and Maria invite you to dine on their patios. They also have new lunch offerings that are $6.99 and a Happy Hour from 3-6 pm. Gustavo has a passion for wanting to please his patrons. He probably won’t ask you how you are but most certainly will ask you, “How was your dinner?” Gustavo is no stranger to hard work. He has worked as a dishwasher, prep cook, cook and waiter. He’s owned the Erie location for five years and the Lafayette location for 8 years. When he wanted to buy the restaurant in Lafayette, he worked 17 hours a day for 2 ½ years and then bought the restaurant. When he expanded to Erie, he again worked those hours for 2 ½ years until his debt was retired. Maria is just as resilient. In addition to managing the restaurants with Gustavo, she’s a

probation officer, with a degree in criminal justice/psychology. Si Senor Real Mexican Food is open Monday-Thursday, 10:30am – 9pm, Friday 10:30am-10pm, Saturday 10:30am-9:30pm and Sunday 10:30am9pm. They offer their authentic Mexican cuisine for breakfast, lunch and dinner. The restaurant has their menu on their website sisenorrealmexicanfood.com and is on Facebook. The Erie phone number is 720.890.9765 and the Lafayette phone number is 720.890.1765.

What’s On My Mind

Kelly Martindale, Publisher

Everything is for a Season living top of the other. They are wet and dirty and Iandlove in Colorado in layers and too heavy to blow away. They for a time disappear only when physically picked up loved living in Idaho, because they are places where there are actual seasons; winter, spring, summer and fall. I’ve lived in Washington State but it was almost a perpetual spring with a bit of winter and a bit of summer, no real fall at all. A lot of my life has been lived in an interminable season of “in-between.” Like that ugly period of time at the end of fall and the beginning of winter; everything is dead or near-dead and brown and ugly. There may be patches of green here and there but they are only glimpses of hope, not real life. The leaves have fallen, one on

Vol. 1, Issue 5

and thrown into the garbage for trash day; an eyesore. Many have told me that our lives and relationships go through “seasons” just like the weather. Sometimes we are in the building season, preparing the land, fertilizing, sowing seed, busy with activity that nurtures and grows good things in us, for us and all around us. And then there is the harvest season where goodness abounds and we are filled abundantly and we lack nothing and we find joy easily and share and encourage and it seems to have no end. But inevitably, there comes the season of “in-between.” It does not happen often but when it does, it can be

all-encompassing…hard…devastating… endless, or so it seems. For me, it is heavy, debilitating and sucks the motivation from me. I make poor decisions, lack energy, stay isolated, cancel appointments, and get impulsive. It makes me feel sluggish, worrisome and I want to runaway. But I don’t because, well, “it” could always be worse. During those times of in-between and disillusionment, I need lifting up. And nobody can lift me except the One who made me and loves me, unconditionally. I’m glad the winter is over this year. I’m grateful spring is upon us. I pray the seeds of destruction in me are dead forever and I know that now that the snow is melted there is new beauty coming to life which brings an abundant joy. It’s been there before and I know He has it for me again.

A lot of my life has been lived in an interminable season of “in-between.”

James 4:7-10 The Message (MSG) says:

So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he’ll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it’s the only way you’ll get on your feet. 7-10

Prayer Request

We

ask for your prayers for the healing of Kaylee Sue Ortiz, 18 months old, who lives in Dacono with her parents, Heather (works at Better Business Cleaning in Erie) and Ricky Ortiz. Kaylee was diagnosed this week with a rare cancerous brain tumor called ETANTR, which is a deadly brain tumor that affects mainly children below the age of 4. Kaylee starts chemotherapy this Monday, and we ask for prayers to support Kaylee and for her parents and extended family. Lord my God, I called to you for help, and you healed me. Ps 30:2

A LETTER FROM MAYOR TINA HARRIS BOARD OF TRUSTEES RETREAT UPDATE #4: COMMUNICATION & TRANSPARENCY This is the last in a series of four updates from our April 24th Spring Retreat. When the new Board took office last year, we immediately began working with staff to open communications with citizens. As a result we launched our awesome website that includes what I consider to be its best new attribute - the “Transparency” tab. From here you can view and download Agendas & Packets, Financial Reports, Streaming Videos of meetings; quick links to Public Notices; Development Activity Reports & Maps and our new “Open Budget” application. The website is just one way our talented and award-winning

communications staff makes it is easy for you to stay connected with Erie Town Government. But what if you could have access to Town stuff anytime - anywhere? Well, now you can. During our retreat, staff previewed the new official mobile application for the Town of Erie. It’s called “Erie Stuff.” A Newsflash will be released today with details for how to download and use it – and I wanted to be the first to let you know. (One of the perks as Mayor!) The app is loaded with features including a new interactive Parks & trails map –very cool and extremely helpful. When I ask a question – I want to be sure I’m asking the right person so I know I’m getting the correct answer. Erie Stuff gives you the opportunity to do just that. The service request feature lets you submit a request or ask a question about the Town. In return, staff will make sure

that the right person delivers the correct response in a timely manner. And to that point – I want to talk about the people behind the technology. Not the people who developed the app, but the people who will be answering your questions and replying to your service request. We are fortunate to have a team of dedicated staff who care about you and our community. We did not hire extra staff to manage this new app. Rather, each department has assigned individual team members to help resolve your concern or get you an answer to your question. Thank you in advance to Sandy, Katie, Sarah and Kris. Most likely when you hit “submit” one of these four individuals will be taking care of you. Erie is growing. Every day we welcome someone new to our community. And every day there is something new going on. At the start of the new year I made an effort to practice gratitude.

When I consider just how lean staffing levels are at Town Hall; and when I consider how much we ask of our staff; and knowing the high level of service they deliver – I am truly grateful. I have often said that communication would be the cornerstone of your new Board of Trustees. Every day we try to deliver on that promise. You can connect with us through email, phone calls, meetings, Notify Me, Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, Engage Erie, Channel 8, streaming video – and now through Erie Stuff! Sincerely,

Mayor Tina Harris Town of Erie

Town of Erie Launches “Erie Stuff” Mobile Application

T

he Town of Erie, Colorado is a growing community - and that means we have a lot more stuff than we used to have. We have more people doing more stuff and building more stuff so we need more meetings to talk about all that stuff. Then there’s all that other stuff we want to do, not to mention the stuff we don’t know about. Having more stuff is good as long as you know where it is and can get to it easily. And every day, more and more of us are using mobile devices to access the stuff we want. That’s why we built ERIE STUFF. Erie Stuff is the official mobile application for the Town of Erie, Colorado providing Erie residents, businesses and visitors the opportunity to access Town stuff at anytime from anywhere. Want to do some stuff? It’s quick and easy to open Erie Stuff on your mobile device and submit a Service Request, register for a class, pay your utility bill, view maps and download agendas. Want the right person to give you the correct answer to your question? Then go ahead and give Erie Stuff’s Service Request a try. Erie Stuff’s Service Request feature replaces the former Citizen Request Tracker system. Service Request will allow you to report an issue faster and receive updates as it gets fixed. See a problem? Have a question? Report it to the Town (attach a photo too if you like). You can also comment on reported issues to provide and receive additional information. And when you make your request “public” it is viewable to all other users. You can do more stuff with Erie Stuff than the stuff we just mentioned. And since this is just the launch of our new app – you’ll be glad to know we are already developing more stuff.

Leash Law Reminders

As

the weather warms up and more people are using Town parks and trails, the Town of Erie Police Department would like to remind Residents of our current dog leash ordinance: When dogs are taken off of their property, they must be in control by a person and restrained by a substantial chain or leash, six feet (6’) in length or less. The goal is to keep our furry friends and citizens as safe as possible when we are all outdoors enjoying the trails, parks, and open space the Town of Erie has to offer. If you have any further questions please contact the Erie Police Department at 303926-2800. Did You Know?: Dogs owned by residents in the Town of Erie must be licensed each calendar year. Every owner of a dog over six months of age shall have the animal licensed within 30 days after it is brought into the Town. Dog License Applications are available online or at Town Hall. Contact 303-926-2700 for more information on Dog Licenses.

Chinook Healthcare Inc. Delivers Products and Services to You By Jan Sciacca

T

yson Hodge, local resident and owner of Chinook Healthcare Inc., values the ability to help people get the most affordable healthcare products and services available. He declares, “We strive to build long lasting relationships with our patients by addressing their specific needs and creating solutions for each patient.” For those of you who like and dislike living in an area that is close to everything but still challenging when shopping for unique services, Chinook Healthcare is a company to consider for yourself, family and friends. Chinook Healthcare is primarily a Home Healthcare Pharmacy and leading online resource of Diabetic Testing supplies. Chinook is fully capable of home delivery services for medications, offering free delivery to patients locally and expedited shipping nationally. Chinook Healthcare is dedicated to providing the highest quality of personal customer service to each of its patients. Chinook Healthcare was founded in 2006. It started on Amazon by selling low priced, high quality diabetic supplies. Chinook has steadily expanded offering a wider variety of diabetic and home healthcare products. Additionally, Chinook has broadened its sales market

ErieCR5_2015_Final.indd 3

to include Chinook Pharmacy under the sentiment that home health care services and prescription markets have been under served. This has allowed a specific business model to be created where Chinook Healthcare works with home healthcare agencies within our communities and patients to ensure they are getting the best treatment and medications available. Chinook Healthcare is a fully licensed Colorado Pharmacy providing services within the healthcare field including diabetic supplies and pharmaceuticals. It’s staffed with a local team of individuals dedicated to providing you with the best products and service possible. Chinook Health Care typically serves individuals between highways 66 and 36 so this includes the communities of Mead, Longmont, Frederick, Firestone and Dacono, as well as Boulder, Lyons, Louisville, Lafayette and Erie. The company is given the rank of A+ by the Better Business Bureau. Chinook Healthcare owner Tyson Hodge lives in Mead and is currently engaged. He has 3 children, twin 10-year-old daughters and a 3-year-old son. He and his family enjoy the community events offered. He’s an avid snowboarder and motorcycle rider and greatly enjoys being outdoors.

Whether it be hiking, hunting or fishing, Tyson finds the essence of nature to be a relaxing agent for life’s daily stresses. One of the most rewarding memories Tyson has is of a couple who had recently lost their healthcare insurance. They had a daughter who was diabetic. Chinook was able to provide the family with their diabetic needs at a lower cost than through their insurance. This incident served as not only a great memory, but also a humble reminder of the true goal of Chinook Healthcare, which is, essentially, helping people. Beginning March 1st, any new patients who use Chinook Healthcare as their pharmacy will receive a free year membership to Chinook PHI (personal health record concierge service), which is a $99 value. Chinook Health Care delivers to you, in your home. They can be reached by phone at 720.458.4887. Their headquarters are 325 W. South Boulder Rd, #5, Louisville, CO. The company’s hours are Monday through Friday, 10 am-4 pm. Contact information is chinookhealth@gmail.com and chinookhealthcare.com.

R

iver Garden Winery is Weld County’s first winery and is a treat to have as our neighbor! Robert and Mary Stahl opened River Garden Winery in August of last year. This new facility, located between Fort Lupton and Platteville, hosts a tasting room and an event space available for parties. River Garden Winery is unique. It’s located in the country on the Platte River where there are old cottonwoods and an abundance of wildlife. Deer, bald eagles, wild turkeys, great horned owls and great blue herons, are regular visitors there. All River Garden Wines are produced right there and are only available there. Bob and Mary Stahl are both originally from northwest Ohio where they grew up on farms. They moved to Colorado in 1978 and to their current location near Fort Lupton in 1992. Bob decided in 2004 to try his hand at grape growing with the intention of making wine if the grapes would indeed grow. In the spring of 2005 the first acre of 8 different varieties were planted. That’s when Stahl Vineyards started making a name for itself. The grapes grew beyond expectations, so more vines were planted each year until there were about 5 acres. The grape varieties selected are hardy and resistance to cold winter temperatures. Most are good to 20 below zero. Bob began making wine commercially in 2008 as the first grapes became available. Stahl Vineyards currently grows about 4 acres of wine grapes which are used by the winery. They had grown five acres of grapes but recent lost 1 acre as an easement. Bob says, “Our estate wines are made from hybrid grapes and are quite unique for the area. We have wines made from our own grapes as well as grapes brought over from the West Slope and Washington State.” Mary works in Downtown Denver in the oil and gas industry and has over 30 years’ experience as a Geo-tech. Bob left the State of Colorado after 22 years of public service in 2011 to begin construction of the winery building. Getting the winery built has been the biggest challenge

by far for the Stahls. Being the first winery in Weld County presented many obstacles that they had to overcome. Being in a flood plain also complicated things. The Stahls love for meeting new people and making them smile and being able to share their country setting with others was a driving force in encouraging them to persevere. River Garden Winery has patrons arriving from Denver to Boulder and from Greeley to Keenesburg, with patrons’ feedback being very positive. The tasting room is currently open on Saturdays 12 to 5 pm and is a good venue for a fun event that can be shared by friends. Bob and Mary invite you to bring a picnic and buy a bottle of wine. Bob asserts, “It is a great close-by place to enjoy a glass or two of wine while enjoying the country.” The Stahls encourage folks to subscribe to the winery’s emails via their website. By doing so, one will receive invitations to barrel tastings and blending competitions. River Garden Winery is located at 9490 County Road 25, Fort Lupton. Its website is rivergardenwinery.com and its phone number is 303.304.4064. The company is also on Facebook.

Google Invests $860M to Help Homeowners Pay Less for Power

G

oogle embraces the opportunity that utility monopolies have been slow to adapt. Investing $860 million, Google has now created the largest fund ever to offer American homeowners a more affordable, cleaner option to power their homes and spark the solar revolution here in America. Not only is solar power a cleaner, cheaper option, it’s now gaining the appeal of major investors. 2015 is said to be the year for solar. Simply put, solar is now something to pay attention to, folks. If you had the choice to pay more for dirty fossil fuel energy or less for clean renewable energy, which would you choose? If you haven’t noticed all the solar panels going up on your neighbor’s roofs, open your eyes! There’s a reason why every 3 minutes, another home or business in America switches to solar. Did you know, for less than what you currently pay your utility provider, and for $0 money out of pocket, you can lease or purchase your home’s own solar power system, and create your own power. Free yourself from rising utility rates and even increase your

ErieCR5_2015_Final.indd 6

property value by adapting solar. Not only can you create your own power from the sun, but now, with the Tesla battery system, you can even store your sun power with your own independent rechargeable battery system. With Tesla’s “Powerwall” battery, residential solar technology just got even better. Most homeowners don’t pay that much attention to their utility rate per kilowatt, or even look at their monthly statements before paying them, and that’s exactly what your energy company is counting on. It’s reassuring that, as a nation, we’re quickly wising up and realizing we have better options and choices to make. Lucky for us, Colorado is one of the best places in the nation to take advantage of solar. If you’re interested in seeing how solar would compare to your current electric bill, contact Eric Kleffner at SolarCity to schedule your free home visit while the 30% federal tax credit lasts. From refugee to aristocracy: Erie woman’s life in war-torn Germany As told to Jim Stull, Author, Images of America: Erie Editor’s Note: This is the second part of a six part series. The person featured in this series wishes to remain anonymous

Part two: Ousted from our hometown German soldiers knocked at the front door during the night, surprised we hadn’t evacuated. Most residents had decided to stay. One soldier said to my aunt, “Lady you don’t know what you are facing. We are the front—the last Germans you will see before the Russians come, and they are not German-friendly.” The next day, the Germans weren’t even trying to fight the Russians; they didn’t have enough ammunition. All they could do was retreat to avoid more casualties. We needed somewhere safe to stay. Another aunt had a house with a cellar where they stored potatoes and coal; it would be safer. The next morning, my aunt directed my brother and me to go there. She would follow in a few minutes because she had to feed the cows. It was a

10-to-15 minute walk. She asked us to pull a hand-wagon with a suitcase in it. As we were crossing a field, bullets flew past our heads. We dropped the hand-wagon and ran to our aunt’s house. Relieved to see us, they asked why we had taken so long. They sent us to the cellar where there were already about six families who had sought refuge. We sat there all day on a heap of potatoes. We didn’t dare to go out. When it got dark, the aunt we lived with finally decided to leave her house and join us. She said it wasn’t safe to come during the day. On her way, she saw the hand-wagon we dropped and pulled it the last stretch to her sister’s house. She never told us what was in the suitcases until later. She had operated a “guest house” where people could eat, drink, and play billiards. She had some French liquor that she didn’t want to leave behind. During the short time that the suitcase lay on the ground outside, someone took the bottles but nothing else. She did a lot of praying

during the trek. The next morning, Russian soldiers were at our door. We hadn’t turned on any lights, but they knocked anyway. They took all the elderly men away. We never knew what they did with them. We waited another day in that basement, sitting and sleeping uncomfortably on those potatoes. I wanted to go outside, but a Russian soldier stuck a pistol in my back and told me that it wasn’t safe. The next day, German soldiers came back to the house and told us we should leave because things were going to get ugly. We don’t know how they got the Russians to move back out, but apparently each army occupied Hennersdorf three separate times. We gathered some belongings and prepared to leave. We had no car—nothing that was motorized. All

gasoline went to the war effort. My aunt and uncle still had one horse and two cows that were trained to pull a wagon. They loaded up the two wagons—one pulled by a horse and the other by the cows. “Scott” deLuise: An Erie Intrapreneur Who Creates Change By Jan Sciacca

R.

Scott deLuise, a fifth generation Colorado native, citizen of Erie and resident of Erie Air Park since 2009, lives the ideology of developing and promoting practical solutions to social or environmental challenges. He creates change when it appears to him that change needs to occur. He smiles as he says, “My motives are honest, ethical and the “right way” – my right way.” Gifford Pinchot III is credited with creating the word intrapreneur, which represents “dreamers who do,” a description of Scott deLuise. Scott, a CU graduate and “baby boomer” with a finance degree, has worked only one job in his life where someone else paid him a paycheck. He graduated from CU and was employed at a large oil company in Montana performing audits and flying commercially weekly from site to site. Scott, who has possessed a pilot’s license since he was 17, approached his company’s supervisors about his idea of allowing him to pilot a plane from site to site, creating a huge savings for the company. He was denied. Many of his other cost cutting ideas were shuttered. Soon he was offered a promotion and a transfer to Houston. Realizing that the corporate world meant being dictated to by policies that were, in many cases stoic, and in place for the sake of being in place without concrete reason, he quit. He has created his own paycheck and his own opportunities since. After leaving the corporate world, Scott and his wife Jan, seized the opportunity to buy a Chrome Concepts furniture store in a shopping mall in Billings. It was the 70s and chrome furniture was “in.” They were prosperous and did well but decided to sell the store at an opportune time while chrome was still popular.

Scott’s love of quality motor vehicles then landed him a commission sales job selling Mercedes-Benz He did extremely well, especially considering he was still in his twenties. One day he sold a car to a real estate broker who inspired him by telling he could make 4 years of commissions in one transaction, if he were to make a life-course change and become a real estate expert. He contemplated the risks and then made the move to Century 21 where he was a real estate sales associate for two years. Wanting to further his education and being homesick for Colorado, Scott and Jan returned to their home state where Scott obtained his MBA in Real Estate Construction Management at Denver University in 1981. Upon graduating, he dabbled with plans for a commercial building in Billings but his innovative ideas for the commercial project and, perhaps his young age of 30, were scraped by authorities, costing the deLuises a sizeable sum of money. Scott reminisces today saying, “The market wasn’t ready for me.” It was 1982 and Scott and Jan owned a real estate company on Lookout Mountain in Golden where they had 5 agents. Then everything changed, including his life path. When his former fraternity, the Chi Psi Fraternity house in Boulder, was burned by an arsonist he stepped in as President of Alpha Psi Delta of Chi Psi Corporation to help rebuild. When he found out that the fraternity was underinsured, he sought advice from a public adjuster. There were only a couple such companies in the state that advocated for the policyholder when a major loss occurred. Scott shadowed the adjuster throughout the entire rebuild of the fraternity and was impressed that the adjuster was able to secure twice the amount of the original claim from the insurance company. Scott and Jan founded Matrix, their own public adjusting firm, in 1988 to assist policyholders in preparing, filing and adjusting insurance claims. Scott quickly became an expert in his field, aided by the experience of tragedies along the way, where he was hired as an on-site consultant. Just a few of these casualties were the Scottsbluff Meat Packing fire of 1989, the Denver hail storm of 1990, Hurricane Andrew in 1992, the Malibu-Laguna fires in California in 1993 and the Northridge earthquake in California in 1994. Scott is renown in his industry and is a regularly

sought after consultant for FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Association). He is held in high regard by his peers who will install him as President of NAPIA (National Association of Public Insurance Adjusters) in June. Scott credits his mother for his take-charge attitude. He says she seized opportunities, was fearless and independent. His father was a physician and conservative. He also gives credit for who he is to Jan, whom he met his sophomore year of college. His eyes danced as he told me she had fabulous grades in school, was a former head cheerleader at Littleton and had business experience by working in her parents’ flower shop. He exclaimed, “It was love at first sight . . . for me.” Now they’ve been married 40 years and have one adult son Kalon. When the deLuises visited Erie in 2007, they found their way to Erie Air Park because of Scott’s love for flying. When they saw a lot for sale, Jan said, “Let’s build a house here!” They love where they live and the Town of Erie. Scott, who is a great study of any challenge, viewed the Erie Airport

as underutilized, under siege by some in the community who would prefer the space be used in other ways, and although a potential to being an “economic engine” in the town’s economy, it was operating in the “red” when they arrived. Scott, who is no stranger to creating change, saw an opportunity and with the help of others, welcomed the changes that he’s seen the Town of Erie make at the Erie Airport, including the hiring of Jason Hurd as Fixed Base Operator. When given the chance, Scott tells anyone who will listen about the Erie Airport and how it is now quite a success story and an “economic engine.” Although there are plenty of upgrades and additions that some clamor for, the Erie Airport is one of the few airports of its size in the United States that operates in the black. Scott deLuise is an inspiration as a citizen who sees, responds and champions change and he is an asset to the Erie community. Scott can be reached via email at scott@ matrix-bc.com.
