Boulder Valley Velodrome: An Inside Look at the Area’s Sensation By Jan Sciacca
T
he Boulder Valley Velodrome is not only an area sensation but is a destination location for some nationally and internationally. As the velodrome begins its second season, there’s more than meets the eye at the high tech wooden structure that sits adjacent to County Line Road in Erie. It only appears quiet on the outside. Inside riders, ages 11-80, and of all skill levels are traveling the 250 meter 41.5 degree banked track with no brakes, no gears and no coasting. Even the novice rider, after the orientation, seems to easily enter the track at the required 28-30 kilometer speed (18-20 mph) needed to maintain a place on the track. An average rider completes a lap in 20 seconds. The popularity of velodrome racing was at its height in 1890-1920 and, at the time, was more popular than baseball. It’s now regaining popularity, not only for professional and Olympian riders, but for the average sports-enthusiast family. Velodrome racing is a safe place for youth rather than on area roads. It’s the place to be for anyone who wants the “perfect” ride. The Boulder Valley Velodrome is the only 250 meter (Olympic standard) velodrome in Colorado. In 2004 owners
Doug Emerson and Frank Banta, lifelong cycling enthusiasts themselves, pondered the idea of building a velodrome. After years of evaluating various locations, dealing with the requirements of the building process and regrouping after the challenges of Mother Nature’s wind, the Boulder Valley Velodrome opened on January 1, 2015. As the velodrome begins its second season, sports “locals,” families and national and international teams are finding their way to Erie and the velodrome. Regardless of skill level, a degree of synergy, comradery and respect blankets velodrome riders. It’s easy to get started with velodrome cycling. All one needs to do is bring his or her cycling clothes, helmet and any food to eat. The unique track bikes and special cycling shoes are provided. A “Day at the Track”, Part 1, is held on Saturdays and costs $100. It consists of a 2 ½ hour session that provides one’s equipment, complete track instruction, including the rules and etiquette of riding in a velodrome, and time on the track. The majority of Part 1 graduates get “hooked” on the experience of a perfect ride and return for Part 2, either the next
day or another Sunday. Part 2 is also a 2 ½ hour session and costs $100. After completing Part 1 and 2, a first year membership to the velodrome only costs $400 and includes the use of a bike and shoes. The Boulder Valley Velodrome is unique among velodromes in that it contains a huge bunker where its bikes are stored. The bunker also is a safe place for skilled riders who have their own equipment and want to secure their bikes on site. The Boulder Valley Velodrome wants to create value for everyone. Currently, it offers the best lunch location pastime around, with more amenities being added as time progresses. It’s free to visit the velodrome with a picnic lunch or food to
grill. Grills, tables and tents for shading are provided. A popular corporate offering is “Night at the Track.” The velodrome can host a company of 20-30 riders on Friday or Saturday nights. The exclusive offering includes the food grills, music, course instruction, bikes and shoes and time on the track. The cost is $500 plus $25 a rider. The Boulder Valley Velodrome is located at 601 Bonnell Avenue, Erie. It is open most days from 11:30am-5pm but special events with extended hours are numerous. To register for your “perfect ride,” or review a calendar of events, visit bouldervalleyvelodrome.com. Questions may be addressed to BVVelo@gmail.com. Its phone number is 303.818.5817.

Following the Plan and Now Celebrating 25 Years of Marriage!

lueprints, the Simeon Protocol, Financial Peace University, the Bible…each are tools to help us follow a plan. If we follow the instructions to the best of our ability, we end up with a wellbuilt home, a healthier body, financial freedom, and best of all, a contented life. As chaotic as my life has been from my earliest memories, I have had some substantial periods of time of complete peace and contentment. Every one of those days were surrounded in prayer and kept going by faith. After having been married twice before and still wanting to be married, I made a commitment to “do it right” the next time I was in a relationship. The time did come when I was asked out on a date. I prayed and prayed before I ever committed to that first date. I’m so thankful I did. I sensed that God had given me His approval to date Mike so we planned the event. We had a wonderful time of conversation in a very relaxing setting on that first date in 1990. One plan I did follow correctly, was asking God, every step of the way, about my relationship with Mike. Looking back, those first prayers about dating Mike are probably what kept us married during the hardships. Why? Mike and I had dated only six months when Alisha, my nine-year-old daughter was hit by a car and died. Ten months after, in 1991, Mike and I married. Mike did not marry the same person he
had known and dated. I was different, a of tar paper and our concrete steps sunk a shell of a person really. foot because they did not use rebar. I do: publishing the Consumer Report resented Mike’s “plain and simple” life while community papers, going to church, mine was tragic. We blended families and getting healthy, traveling safely, and all had so much “water under the bridge.” On the other important parts of my life―then I top of that, we now had a statistic hanging must commit each situation to God. over our heads; 75% of all married couples I don’t always follow God’s ways but divorce after the loss of a child. God is always faithful to get me back on Every time I wanted out of our marriage, the right path. The Bible says in Proverbs 3: God reminded me of earlier answers to 5-6, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart prayers. God approved Mike; for friendship, and lean not on your own understanding; for dating and for a mate. I used to beg God in all your ways acknowledge him, and he to let me out of the marriage but He would will make your paths straight.” not. Praise God! On May 11, we celebrated 25 years of marriage. Erie Mom Make Quilts Personal Using Antique Sewing Machines By Jen Barton
S
ome quilts are still made by hand in 2016, love stitched into each seam. Just ask Erie resident Suzanne Eyerman, research professional and mother of two. Eyerman, 37, began quilting some 15 years ago while living just outside of New York City. It began as a creative way to bond with her aunt. The two, having no previous quilting experience, took a class together and found a joint passion that would result in some of the most beautiful and meaningful gifts enjoyed by close friends and family over the years. In March, Eyerman shared her love of quilting with Black Rock Elementary kindergartners and hauled her loyal antique Singer 221-1 to the presentation. Singer manufactured the sewing machine commonly known as the Singer “Featherweight” in 1939 to be portable -- a very modern feature back in the day. However, precision stitching-- not portability-- saved the Featherweight from retirement. For this reason, Eyerman prefers the antique over today’s computerized sewing machines to stitch detailed piece work into her masterpieces. “Many people in the quilting world believe the Featherweight makes the most beautiful and straightest stitches,” she said. She also praised the low-tech simplicity of the antique. “They don’t break often, and when they do they’re quite easy to fix,” she said.
If the mechanics of the sewing machine explain part of her preference for it, the camaraderie she senses with previous owners explains the rest. “It feels impersonal to use a new machine. When I use the antique machine I feel a connection with the previous owners. A piece of history is included in my quilt.” Each of Eyerman’s quilts are made with a specific recipient in mind. Often to commemorate a milestone such as a graduation or a birth in the family. As she works she incorporates themes inspired by the recipient and uses her time as an opportunity to be mindful, thinking of them and their use of the quilt over the years. She also quilts with her grandmother’s Necchi, an Italian sewing machine manufactured in the early 1950s. Using the Necchi, whose original owner happens to be Eyerman’s grandmother, she is sewing something extra into the quilt currently in the works for her niece. Eyerman’s first quilt, designed immediately after 9/11, makes an exception to the pattern. Though safely outside of Manhattan that day, she recalled her clear view of the city’s skyline as the World Trade Center towers collapsed. Witnessing the tragedy inspired her inaugural quilt’s red, white, and blue patriotic theme and it became her first introduction into the intentional and timeless process her quilting hobby would
provide. “Quilting relaxes me. When I quilt I’m always in the moment, and I love that.” Suzanne Eyerman with her 1939 Singer “Featherweight” and quilt. The Singer “Featherweight” weighs11.5 pounds, the foot pedal weighs 1.5 pounds, the wooden carrying case weighs 7 pounds for an even 20 pounds.
“Living in the Moment . . . Surviving Trauma” — a Healing Event for the Whole Family
DC
Faber, brings his ground-breaking way of approaching life after trauma to the area on Saturday, June 4, 8:30 am–12:30 pm. The event, titled, “Living in the Moment . . . Surviving Trauma,” will be held at New Creation Church, 737 Bross St., Longmont. It is purposely scheduled to coincide with the tributes paid to our veterans during the Memorial Day week. A continental breakfast will be served. DC Faber contends that the hypervigilance required of soldiers — even those not in combat — rewires the brain. And it can be true for anyone who’s faced a traumatic experience — police, firemen, cancer survivors. He has been presenting his model nationwide, helping veterans and other trauma survivors, to “Take what
changed them and, make it their strength.” At the same time, he is helping families learn to understand and walk with their loved ones through their post-traumatic growth. Faber developed this unique model after returning from combat in Afghanistan and trying to figure out how to rejoin his family and his community. It was about coming home and struggling with a concept of time that isn’t hyper-focused on the present. Faber refers to the phrase, “I don’t care.” as something that trauma survivors truly feel. But families misinterpret it, he claims. He refers to himself and other trauma survivors when he says, “We don’t care about the time or the place. What we

How Many of These 7 Real Estate Facts Do You Already Know?
H
ere’s a quick list of things you may not already know that could put, or keep, money in your wallet while you’re in the real estate game. 1. Home ownership is an important way to build wealth. Lawrence Yun, chief economist of the NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF REALTORS®, predicts in 2016 $225,000 to $230,000 in median net worth for homeowners and around $5,000 for renters. 2. Owning real estate can save you hundreds in taxes. When you own, you may be eligible for a slew of real estate tax deductions and credits, including state and local income and property taxes, and mortgage interest and mortgage insurance payments. 3. Buyers who tapped expert real estate advice were glad they did. When buyers who’ve recently worked with a real estate agent were asked why they teamed up with one, more than half said it was an important step in finding the right home. Nearly four out of five consumers say their agent was a very useful source of information. 4. Sellers were just as happy they worked with a real estate pro. Nearly nine out of 10 sellers, or 89%, worked with a real estate agent in 2015. They also reported a median gain on the sale of their home of $40,000 more than they paid for it, according to NAR’s research. 5. Sellers who spruce up and declutter their home draw more interest. Staging a home makes a big difference in buyers’ ability to see its potential. Nearly half of real estate agents surveyed say staging will increase a home’s market value, and just under one-third say buyers are more willing to overlook a property’s faults when staging highlights its best features.

6. Sell-it-yourselfers are a dwindling crowd. The number of sellers who sold their home without a real estate pro has dropped to 8%, according to the buyer and seller study — the lowest share since this stat was first tracked in 1981. 7. Sellers who go it alone leave money on the table. The median price of homes sold without the expertise of a real estate agent was $210,000 in 2015. That’s $35,000 less than the median price of homes sold by sellers who worked with an agent. Source: HouseLogic

Erie Town Fair and Balloon Festival Celebrates its 20th Anniversary on May 21st By Nathalie Baret
E
very year, The Town of Erie comes together to celebrate its biggest festivity of the year —an amalgam of colorful hot air balloons rising with the sun, a vintage auto show competition, concerts, crafters and vendors, kid-friendly things to do and more. A town favorite, the Erie Town Fair and Balloon Festival has been around since its inauguration two decades ago. The community event, birthed back in 1996 after the Erie Chamber Board of Directors came up with the concept, has since evolved into a fair that clocks in over 23,000 visitors attending throughout the day and has the support of the community, including our sponsors, the Colorado National Golf Club, Town of Erie, Erie Police Department and the Mountain View Fire Protection District. Get your cameras ready, the 20th annual Erie Town Fair and Balloon Festival + Garage Rats Auto show is slated for May 21rst. The Hot Air Balloon Festival is held at the Colorado National Golf Club (2400 Vista Parkway, Erie). Kicking off the festivities, Friday, May 20, is Media Day, and Saturday, May 21, our event sponsors lift off as dawn breaks. Under a cool-breezed sky, the mélange of hot air balloons ascending into the sky is a scenic experience of colors as the sun comes up, with the early light of day reflecting off the vibrant-hued balloons. This truly unique, breathtaking sight has brought identity to our town. Today, the association of hot air balloons has become a popular icon that is synonymous with the Town of Erie. On Sunday, May 22, our pilots launch their balloons with their crew and volunteers. All balloon take-offs are set each day at approximately 6a.m., weather permitting. We invite the public to come and witness the Balloon Festival: watch the balloons inflate on the launch field, walk among the tethered balloons of different colors and sizes, and converse with the pilots and crew. Onsite balloon rides are not available. If you would like to give a hand and volunteer as a balloon crew member, please contact the Erie Chamber at 303-828-3440 or visit www.eriechamber.org. On Saturday, May 21, there are many highlights to be enjoyed. First, there’s the Historic Downtown, which comes alive with bustle as 225 craft, service, and food vendors located on Briggs, Wells, Kattell, and Moffatt streets prepare their booths for the day’s activities that start at 10 a.m. and run until 4 p.m. And for the car buffs, the nostalgic Garage Rats Auto Show is back with many hot rods and classic cars parked up and down Wells street, between Briggs and Pierce, from 10 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. Also in conjunction with the 20th annual Erie Town Fair and Balloon Festival, the fourth annual Erie Half Marathon and 5K run hosted by 3W Races is back and taking place on Sunday, May 22, at Reliance Park (900 Weld County Road 1.5; the majority of the course is on Coal Creek Trail). For more information, visit www.eriehalf.com. In addition, on Kattell Street and in the Coal Creek Park, there are kid-friendly vendors, including a mini-carnival, tumble bumbles, a bouncy inflatable, a petting zoo, and the Maxfund Animal Adoption folks will be there with their furry four-legged friends for all to come by and say hello! And to delight your senses, don’t forget you can visit food vendors on the north side of Kattell, in front of the Coal Creek Park and baseball fields. It is also here that you will find the hotspot for live entertainment, including local performances by Irish Dancers, Jump ‘n Jive, La Bella Ballerinas, Bennett’s Karate, Axis of Movement, and Case ‘n Point! To set the evening tone, headlining band THE GOONIES will take the stage at 6 p.m. All music shows are free to the public. Beverages, both non and alcoholic, are available near the music at the Chamber’s Beer Garden, open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. We will have locally fresh-brewed beer from Industrial Revolution Brewing Company, Echo Brewing Company, and The Old Mine Cidery & Brewpub. Wait, there’s more! Come see a hot air balloon night glow at approximately 7 p.m. (at the park). While anchored to the ground, propane burners inflate the balloons, all
set against the backdrop of a darkened dusk evening. Gaze and ooh and ahh at the wondrous sight of light and heat of the “Night Glow” as you watch the balloons filled with air, illuminated by their burners that set off flickers of light, flashing and bouncing to the delight of the crowd. We invite all families to join together in helping our pilots set up several of the multi-colored hot air balloons. And to top off the family-fun packed day, a fireworks show takes place at 9:15 p.m. as THE GOONIES lead the countdown, making way for a burst of sparkling fireworks in the night’s sky.

Stephen Paul McNulty July 1, 1950 - April 10, 2016 Stephen Paul McNulty, of Erie, CO, passed away on Sunday, April 10, 2016, at Good Samaritan Hospital in Lafayette. He was 65. Steve was born on July 1, 1950, to Lyle & Shirley (Gordon) McNulty in Rapid City, SD, although he spent most of his childhood in South Milwaukee. Steve was always active and loved outdoor sports of all kinds, including camping, fishing, hunting and archery. Between Steve’s junior and senior year in high school, the family moved to Buffalo NY. Steve had one year in Buffalo before graduating from high school. Anxious to be on his own after graduation, Steve got a job with the railroad. He lived in a trailer on an Indian Reservation in upper New York where, every night, he fell asleep to the sounds of Niagara Falls. That’s where the Draft Board found him in 1969. He spent nineteen months in the Army, including time in Vietnam as ground support. He received numerous
commendations, including three Purple Hearts. He received an honorable discharge in March, 1971. After the service, Steve moved to Colorado and attended the University of Colorado. While at CU, he served in the ROTC. He graduated with a degree in Computer Science in 1978. He worked for EDS, 1978-1980, and worked in Sales, Management and System Support at IBM and Leanin’ Tree, 19802008. He married Janet (Schertz) in January, 1981, and they had two amazing daughters, Erin and Laura. They divorced in 1993. Steve married his wife, Bonnie (Rhoads), April, 2001. Both employed by IBM, they retired on the same day, January 31, 2008, to begin their active retirement. Always active, always smiling, always witty, and a great Jeopardy player (he would say “he has his smarty pants on!”) He had so many interests, including hot air balloon pilot, travel, scuba diving, archery, picture framing, playing guitar,
“The life of the dead is placed on the memories of the living. The love you gave in life keeps people alive beyond their time. Anyone who was given love will always live on in another’s heart.” —Cicero and volunteering. He was a member of the Boulder County Community Corrections Board for over 25 years and he chaired the board for many of those years. Steve is preceded in death by his mother, Shirley; father, Lyle; and brother, Kevin. Steve is survived by his wife, Bonnie; his daughter Erin and fiancé, Joe Westrich; his daughter Laura Olsbo and husband, Stosh Olsbo; four McNulty brothers, Mike, Sean, Dan and Tim; two sisters, Mary Belobraydish and Ann Panega; his former wife, Janet Beaver; and many other relatives and good friends. Ricky Orlando Motorcycle School Offers a Class for Everyone By Jan Sciacca
S
pring has sprung and many are “itching” to get a motorcycle, improve their cycle skills, or renew their long lost motorcycle passion and obtain their motorcycle license. Whatever one’s desire, Ricky Orlando of the area’s Ricky Orlando Motorcycle School can help. Ricky, who has been riding since he was 10 and racing since he was 19, has been actively training folks by offering various classes for the past 14 years. Ricky’s motorcycle school is conveniently located at the area’s IMI Sports Complex at 5074 Summit Blvd, which is also known as Weld Count Rd 8, Dacono. Ricky Orlando’s Motorcycle School has a MSF (Motorcycle Safety Foundation)
class for everyone. The beginner class, which costs $275, is the most popular and is approved by the State of Colorado. It provides 2 days of training, which consists of 10 hours of “bike time” and 5 hours of classroom time. A written and riding test are conducted. When one passes, no further testing is needed for one’s motorcycle license. In Colorado, one can be issued a motorcycle driver’s permit at the age of 15, with full endorsement occurring at the age of 18. If you’re an “empty nester” whose kids are gone and through the years you’ve let your license expire, Ricky offers a one-onone five hour refresher course for $275 that provides license certification.
Other classes offered are for intermediate, advanced, dirt and/or dual sport riders. Ricky Orlando Motorcycle School provides a safe and comprehensive learning environment. The schools is a member of MSF and MOST (Motorcycle Safety Training).
Although the classes are offered year round, spring and summer are the busiest times of the year for the school. For more information on the services offered, visit rickyorlando.com or contact Ricky at 303.666.6061 or at ricky@rickyorlando. com
Mianna Wick to appear at Erie Town Fair on May 21st t just 19-years-old, Indy-Car driver Mianna Wick already is a veteran of the racing A world. Wick has been racing for six years, two and a half of which have been in Formula cars. She will be appearing in Erie and Dacono in May. Wick, who lives in Delta, grew up in racing culture. With a father who raced motocross all his life, a love for speed was almost passed down to her as a birthright. “What inspired me to start racing was due in part to my dad,” Wick said. “He used to race motocross, so he was of course into the whole racing thing. He had it in his blood.” She’s the next Danica Patrick (Nascar driver) and she’s off to the Indy 500 at the end of May and then racing at the Hawk Race in July. She’s a great draw for family and kids (she does a lot of meet and greets/signs autographs) so she will be a good draw when folks are walking around/looking at all the hotrods and classic cars from the Garage Rats show and coming by the Car Docs booth at the Town Fair.

Erie’s Water Werks Irrigation and Landscape Helps Make Homeowners’ Desires Reality By Jan Sciacca
W
ater Werks Irrigation & Landscape was founded in 2015 to share owner Ron Merx’s passion for landscaping and outdoor living with the growing Erie community, as well as surrounding areas. Ron has been in the landscape and nursery profession for over 30 years. He prides himself in listening to what his clients’ desire and then helping make the desires their reality. He loves the “blank canvas” of a backyard and loves seeing it come to fruition. Water Werks serves primarily homeowners in the Erie, Lafayette and
Longmont areas. New homeowners who want to add a landscape to their newly purchased home or homeowners who would like to enhance or refresh their existing landscape, can feel confident and safe by hiring Water Werks Irrigation & Landscape. Ron has lived in Erie for 25+ years and refers to himself as a “local neighbor.” He believes in patronizing other community businesses and wants to employ community members. Ron has been married to Chris for 28 years. They have Alex, a 14 year-old daughter, who will be attending Erie High School in the fall. When asked what he liked to do when the work day was over, Ron surprisingly responded, “One of my passions has become purchasing kids’ bicycles for charity organizations. I decided one Christmas that I was going to purchase a kids bike each month for a year and then each December I could donate
12 bikes to a local charity. My extended family was so struck by the idea that they are participating, which means that in December, we’ll have upwards of 50 bikes to donate. It’s something I’m very proud of.” Ron also enjoys spending time in the mountains, fishing, kayaking and
paddleboarding. Register to win a patio fire pit at the Ron’s Water Werks booth at the Erie Town Fair! Contact information for Water Werks Irrigation & Landscape is 720.353.3129, waterwerksirrigation.com and Ron@ WaterWerksirrigation.com.
