County Line Wine & Spirits Provides Erie with New Shopping Experience By Jan Sciacca

A

bright, new libation shopping experience is available at County Line Wine & Spirits, 460 Erie Parkway, which opened at their new location May 11. Jared Shmitka smiled as he said he “maximized every penny he had” to provide the new shopping experience for Erie. Upon entering the store, I was greeted in a welcoming manner. My first impression was the space is bright, the aisles are wide and well-marked, and the merchandise is displayed in such a manner that one can easily find what one

wants, but will probably find a few new things to try in the process. The artifacts on the walls give the store a homey feel. Jared’s dream of owning his own business culminated when he bought County Line Wine & Spirits in 2010. The store was founded in 2004 and had two previous owners before Jared bought the establishment. He brought his vast experience of retailing, display and marketing with him. Desiring to create a wine and spirits store from the ground up and utilizing his knowledge of presentation, he worked with the Irwin brothers to secure the new location. It was a quick build with ground breaking occurring in October of 2014. The actual product move was frenzied. Jared shared that although a six week schedule is typically planned in opening in a grocery store, he and his staff moved and opened in one day!

Jared is a hands-on owner who can be found helping customers on the floor as much as he can be found in his office. When asked how many hours a week he’s there, he smiled and said, “I don’t count.” He loves Erie and its residents. The community is a welcome change from his corporate experience that included managing stints in Montebello and on Federal Boulevard. Jared started his retailing career 17 years ago as a bagger at Albertsons. He worked his ways through the corporate ranks and 10 stores, eventually serving as various Store Managers and then a Division officer. He was tasked with opening and closing multiple locations and being stationed in great neighborhoods and rough neighborhoods. He longed for the opportunity to have his own store in a good community setting when the Erie store became available. Jared and the County Line Wine & Spirits staff love to educate their customers on offerings the customer may not have tried. They have 1000s of items to choose from and delight in helping one discover a new “favorite.” The store’s Grand Opening is scheduled this month with specials galore. Four of those specials that are available when mentioning this article are a twelve pack of Corona Family for $12.99, a 20 pack bottle of Bud

The Shmitka family, left to right: Dylan, Nicol, Bryan, Jared and Devyn Family at $12.99, Cupcake Wines (750ml) for $6.99 and Smirnoff Vodka (1.75 ltr) $16.99. There is a limit of 6 on these specials. County Line Wine & Spirits is open Mon.Thurs., 9am-10pm, Fri.-Sat., 9am-11pm and Sun. 10am-8pm. The store’s phone number is 303.828.9010 and its website countylinewine.

What’s On My Mind

Vol. 1, Issue 7

Kelly Martindale, Publisher

Humans Who Believe in Jesus Call Themselves Christians But Don’t Forget, Christians Were Humans First

A

nd human we will always be, and we will make mistakes and say stupid things and forget our manners. It’s a wonder I have any friends at all. As I started this piece, I immediately thought of four experiences of “Christian” people in my life, who were so terrible to me that I hardly believed they were “Christian” at all? But not five minutes later, I was reminded of my own guilt at having done exactly the same things to other people. Nobody on earth is exempt from making an inexcusable faux pas or causing a “near miss.” Even with my church sticker on the car, I accidently went straight in a turnright-only lane. I truly thought I could go straight until the blaring of a horn caught my attention, along with the look of horror on that driver’s face.

But it isn’t always an accident—I’ve also been guilty of purposely choosing to do wrong, say wrong, act wrong. I shudder at the things I’ve said in public and that others have seen my unattractive behavior, all of which I wish I could undo. But there is no back button for that. I still make mistakes. Why? Because I am human. I am a Christian who is human. Many people say they don’t want to be a Christian or go to church because “they” are all hypocrites. Again, those people in the church are human. Until we die, even Christians, will say and do DUMB. But know this: Hypocrisy is “on purpose.” It’s a choice. There is a difference between accidental and intentional behavior. And knowing Jesus can and does dispel hypocrisy, addictions, anger, unbelief, lack of forgiveness, and the list goes on. BUT it takes a choice AND it takes time. And for ALL of life, it will be a journey of learning, making mistakes, fixing the mistakes. Human behavior is fickle and unpredictable. Jesus Christ never trusted human nature. He knew and knows what we are all about, what we are capable of,

what our fears are, what stops us from being the best we can be. And that goes for ALL people, Christian or not, people who read the Bible and those who don’t, people who go to church and those who don’t.

I still make mistakes. Why? Because I am human. I am a Christian who is human. Jesus knows our hearts whether we know Him or not or choose to let Him be a part of our lives or don’t let Him be a part of our lives. The only difference between me, a Christian, and someone who does not know Jesus, is that I believe God will, oneby-one, take my mistakes and inner issues away from me and guide me to be a better person in the future for those around me. That is what is known as Grace. I’ve chosen to accept what Jesus offers me. Jesus is the air in me, the beating of my heart, and the thoughts in my brain. I am what I am because of Him. You don’t have to think about breathing in order to get the air you breathe. It is simply there for you to breathe. And Jesus is already there, all around you. He already loves you. He’s there for you. Breathe Him in.

Why just pay an electric bill? Instead, pay off your solar system! By Cristi Benavides

As

we transition from fossil fuels to solar, many people do not want to pay a large upfront investment into solar. Typically, if you purchase a solar system upfront with cash, you will not see your return on investment for 6-12 years! With that being said, most homeowners do not stay in their home for 6-12 years so why would a typical homeowner put solar on their house? Typically they don’t, because of the large upfront investment. Things have changed; Solar has changed; now there is no upfront investment! Because of SolarCity’s financing and their investment from Google, Homeowners do not have to invest

Contact: Eric Kleffner | 720-227-3748 | ekleffner@solarcity.com

not even a penny into their solar system. Instead, they can pay off their solar system with their monthly electric bill that they are already paying! Genius! The way it works is instead of paying United Power or Xcel Energy for electricity, the homeowner would pay Solarcity for their electric bill. All they would have to pay to the Utility Company is the service charge to be connected to the meter. For more information on how you can make the switch to solar, contact your local SolarCity Field Energy Consultant, Eric Kleffner to schedule your free consultation. 720-227-3748 ekleffner@solarcity.com

A LETTER FROM MAYOR TINA HARRIS RETAIL DEVELOPMENT UPDATE: King Soopers, Arapahoe & 287 and Four Corners The number one question the Trustees and I are asked is about potential retail development. This month I would like to provide a retail development update in answer to those questions. The good news is Erie’s reputation as a place to do business is growing every day. As proof – I’d like to share updates on three retail sites in Erie: King Soopers, Arapahoe and 287 and the Four Corners. #1 KING SOOPERS MARKETPLACE ON HIGHWAY 7 AT SHERIDAN I am happy to report that the Planning Commission will be reviewing the Site Plan for the King Soopers at Highway 7 and Sheridan at their July 15th meeting. In case you were not aware, in the fall of last year King Soopers chose to invest in Erie – a decision that will not only provide increased local shopping opportunities,

but a decision that will bring in millions of dollars in sales tax revenue. Take a look at the conceptual site plan below to see how the 125,000 sq. ft. King Soopers MarketPlace will be situated on the 20 acre site. You’ll notice that in addition to the MarketPlace there is an approximately 10,000 sq. ft. of adjacent inline retail; three separate retail pad sites and a fuel center. I will provide further updates – including groundbreaking information as it becomes available. #2 ARAPAHOE & HIGHWAY 287 Many of you have noticed the dirt work taking place on the southeast corner of Arapahoe Road and Highway 287 and asked what the plan is for this site. It’s a great question, as that’s what we are working to determine right now. While we know the long term plan is to have a vibrant retail development on the site, we still need to work out the details. The Town of Erie Urban Renewal Authority (TOEURA) and the Town are beginning the process of selecting a development partner for the

approximately 45 acre site. Our goal is to select a developer who can work with us to determine the best use of the site and develop a specific plan. Staff and Trustees met with several qualified and interested firms during the annual ICSC convention this year. Therefore, I am confident we will have a good pool of applicants to select from. I will share updates with you as this project progresses. #3 FOUR CORNERS MIXED USE DEVELOPMENT The Town has received an application from developers to build a commercial/ residential mixed use development on the southwest corner at the intersection of Erie Parkway and County Line Road. These developers were involved in the Downtown East Louisville (DELO) and Steel Ranch neighborhoods. The developers have indicated that this site would accommodate retail opportunities such as a smaller grocery store and restaurants. Appropriately named “Four Corners,” this project is an opportunity to bring the

amenities we are looking for into the core of our community. Four Corners is now in the Sketch Plan phase and will come to the Planning Commission and the Board this summer. Increasing retail opportunities for our residents while also increasing sales tax revenue remains a priority for this Board of Trustees. We’ve been saying for some time that Erie is a good investment. It’s gratifying to see just how many commercial developers now share our enthusiasm. As important as these developments are, please know that as each moves forward, they will be held to the same, high quality standards that all development applications are held to. Sincerely,

Mayor Tina Harris, Town of Erie This Letter from the Mayor was originally included in the July/August Erie Edition published by the Town of Erie.

Local Happenings Change in Erie’s Raw Water Source Due to Summer Flow Erie Residents May Notice Change in Taste to Their Water

As

part of routine annual operations during summer months, the Town of Erie Water Treatment Facility is using some of its alternate source water reservoirs to augment raw water sources. Due to this temporary source water change, residents may notice a change in taste to their water which is due to differences in water chemistry between the Town’s various raw water sources. The Town of Erie Department of Public Works would like to assure the public that though they may notice a change in the taste of their water, the Town’s water continues to meet State water quality requirements and remains safe to drink. BACKGROUND: The Town of Erie receives a majority of its raw water from the Northern Colorado Water Conservancy District’s southern water supply pipeline during winter months. In preparation for the summer flows, Town of Erie water operators have stored additional water supplies in Erie’s reservoir system. These additional water supplies, supplement the flow through the southern pipeline during times of higher flow. For more information, please contact Water/Wastewater Divisions Manager, Jon Mays at 303-926-2895 or at jmays@erieco.gov.

Before the boxes neatly arranged in your garage or first prospect walks through your door, consider some smart options for casting your home in its best light. 1. Have a Home Inspection. Be proactive by arranging for a pre-sale home inspection. For $250 to $400, an inspector will warn you about troubles that could make potential buyers balk. 2. Get Replacement Estimates. If your home inspection uncovers repairs that you cannot afford, get estimates for the work. The information will help buyers determine if they can afford the home and the repairs. Also hunt down warranties,

you expect to remain with the house. 3. Make Minor Repairs. Fix as many small problems — sticky doors, torn screens, cracked caulking, dripping faucets — as you can. These may seem trivial, but they’ll give buyers the impression your house isn’t well maintained. 4. Clear the Clutter. Clear your kitchen counters of just about everything. Clean your closets by packing up little-used items like outof-season clothes and old toys. Put at least onethird of your furniture in storage, especially large pieces, such as entertainment centers and big televisions. Pack up family photos, knickknacks, and wall

basement. 5. Do a Thorough Cleaning. A clean house makes a strong first impression that your home has been well cared for. Wash windows and leave them open to air out your rooms. Clean carpeting and drapes to eliminate cooking odors, smoke, and pet smells. Wash light fixtures and baseboards, mop and wax floors, and give your stove and refrigerator a thorough once-over. Pay attention to details - wash fingerprints from light switch plates, clean inside the cabinets, and polish doorknobs.

Erie UpLink Is Blessed to be a Blessing By Jan Sciacca

L

exi Cire, Stephanie Short and Lisa Knudsen started Erie UpLink, a charitable (501c3) organization in 2011 as a link between needs in the Erie community and folks wanting to help. Their motto is “See a need, fill a need.” Their mission is to connect Erie families with resources to fulfill their basic life needs. Their desire is to provide hope and to demonstrate care for one another. The founders affirm that Erie is a very generous and compassionate community. Erie UpLink has narrowed its focus as it’s grown. Erie UpLink serves children and families in Erie who are in need of temporary assistance, meeting basic life needs such as food and clothing. Much of their serving is based through the Tiger Packs program. They started with eleven food-filled backpacks at Erie Elementary and are now serving over 100 students each month through six Erie schools. Each fall Black Rock Elementary, Summit Bank and other groups collect new hats and gloves, which are distributed to every Tiger Packs recipient as well as to Erie school health offices. Erie Family Dentistry provides dental care packages. Christmas stockings are filled with toiletries, books, socks, and holiday treats and go home in December packs. School supplies, boxes of Girl Scout Cookies, boxed Valentines and other seasonal favorites are also distributed through the Tiger Packs. Erie UpLink also partners with local schools to provide scholarship funds for fieldtrips and enrichment activities, special classroom supplies and snacks, a hot lunch account for students experiencing a temporary need outside of the free/reduced lunch program, and seasonal clothing (PE shoes, snow boots, winter coats, etc.). Lexi, Stephanie and Lisa think the key to their organization’s success is that they focus on doing a few things very well rather than lots of things. They ask for help and strive to be a good partner to the schools, groups and organizations serving Erie. Erie UpLink is run solely by volunteers. The founders share responsibilities equally, though there are some areas of “specialization.” Stephanie Short does the banking and accounting, Lexi Cire lends her experience as a special education teacher at Erie Elementary to help the Board understand the needs of many of the families and students served, Lisa

Knudsen maintains the website and does much of the electronic communication. All of the food, which equates to about $13,000 a year, is donated by local groups including Calvary Church, Black Rock and Red Hawk Elementaries and Rocky Mountain Christian Academy. The drives are run by volunteer groups, and the Tiger Packs are assembled and often filled by local student groups including Girl Scout Troops, 7th grade boys Calvary youth group, and several Erie High School student groups including Student Council, Select Choir, and Tiger Football Seniors. Erie UpLink is also responsible for bringing Eagle Lake Camp to Erie for the first time. In the past the organization was responsible for sending kids to the camp near Woodland Park. This year they wanted to bring the camp to Erie so more kids could participate in the camp experience. See box at bottom of page for more information on this action-packed fun camp. The founders didn’t know how they would fund the Eagle Lake program, including twentyfive need-based scholarships, but the non-profit Board decided to step out in faith. At their next board meeting, a check arrived in the mail for the exact amount needed. The donation came from a family that had received five scholarships for their children to attend Eagle Lake Camp at the on-site program outside Woodland Park. The family had received a great financial blessing and they wanted to share it with Erie UpLink. One special moment for Lisa was sitting down on the floor in the hallway at Erie Elementary with a young lady who needed tennis shoes for PE. As Lisa took the shoes out of the box, the girl’s eyes got huge. She tied them on her feet and jumped up so excited. Lisa shares, “I don’t think she’d ever had a brand new pair of shoes right out of the box before and she was just so happy and thankful. It brought tears to my eyes, does still just thinking about her.” Erie UpLink would like readers to know how very appreciative they are for the encouragement and financial support they receive from the Erie community. They encourage those interested to visit their website at erieuplink.org regularly for ways to help, to donate via PayPal and for upcoming event information. Erie UpLink’s address is PO Box 1424, Erie CO 80516-1424.

Mix Up Your Fitness Routine you do the exercises by contracting your muscles in If exact same different ways. Isotonic movements of fitness and exercise your muscles are either concentric (where routines the same way week in and week out, your body will quickly adapt to that particular workout and workload. When your body isn’t challenged beyond its comfort zone, you won’t see the results you’re looking for. It won’t take much to mix things up to prevent plateaus. That’s why attending my ladies only fitness groups will challenge you in new ways. By varying the number of reps, the way the exercises are performed, to the variety of exercises themselves will constantly surprise the body and continue to push you forward. In addition to changing the exercises in the ways I mentioned above, you can also change the weight-lifting or body-weight

the working muscle shortens) or eccentric (where the working muscle lengthens). When you lift the weight, your muscle contracts concentrically. An example of this is when you do a bicep curl, you’re pulling the weight toward your shoulder. When you bring the weight back down to straighten your arm, this is the eccentric contraction. At the midpoint of the exercise, when you stop moving the weight and you’re still holding it, your muscles contract statically, or an isometric contraction (where the length of the muscle stays the same). You can adjust the way you do your exercises and reps by shifting the emphasis among the three forms of muscle contraction, which provide you with three ways to do almost anything and endless ways to switch around your routine to keep it fresh and motivating.

You can also do a bicep curl to the half way point and then hold that isometric contraction, and then release it back down to rest. This is just using one example of one exercise, so you can see how you can have hundreds of variations with just changing up the speeds in which you perform each one. From refugee to aristocracy: Erie woman’s life in war-torn Germany As told to Jim Stull, Author, Images of America: Erie Editor’s Note: This is the fourth part of a six part series. The person featured in this series wishes to remain anonymous

Part four: Oppression following World War II After the war, children were not allowed to play with any military-like toys. We didn’t hear much about Hitler anymore. Even today, German schools don’t teach much about Nazi Germany—even though evidence of the concentration camps is still there. Germany had shrunk. Over the centuries, many countries had fought against Germany and taken over various sections. While the Poles didn’t officially take any land, they were forced to go to Germany after Russia took over the eastern portion of Poland. When the war was over, the world basically told Germany, “You started this, and now you must pay for it.” We realized that things would not

get better as no peace treaty had yet been signed. In fact, we thought they might get worse. We decided we would pack up what we could and leave for the western part of Germany. It was about 15 to 18 miles to the train station where we might catch a train to the west. The Polish man of the house said that he would hook the horse to a wagon and take us to the train station in Kohlfurt. We learned that the day before another German family had tried to get to the station. The father was shot in front of his wife and two children. This made us wonder if we should go, but we realized we couldn’t let that keep us from doing what we must. We left early the next morning and, just outside of town, the Polish man said this was as far as he would take us; he didn’t dare take us into town. It was too dangerous, and he might be shot and killed. We took our suitcases and walked to the train station.

Everything was already geared for the Germans to leave the area. We were deloused and loaded onto boxcars where we slept on straw; we never knew where the train would unload us. We were lucky to have landed in the English zone in Lower Saxony near Hannover. We got off the train and were taken to a small town where there were mostly farmers. They knew they had to house refugees from the east, and they didn’t like it. What it must have felt like to have to take in complete strangers to live with them. It wasn’t easy for any of us either. While we were assembled in a barn, the farmers came by to look at us to find out who they might want to take in and how many people were in each family. My aunt was 58 years old by this time, and she was and unable to “hire out” to work for the farmers. She had always had her own business and kept up the house on her own. Sometimes, her brother

would help her with the farm. But now, who would hire her? My other aunt and uncle and their daughter were given a room along with my aunt, my brother, and me. We had a large room that was actually very nice for the six of us. The parents always did what they had to do to survive; sometimes they went without much food so the children could eat.
