Erie’s Loan Closet Transitions to Erie Rotary Club By Jan Sciacca
W
ith a twinkle in his eye, 86-year old Erie resident John Garcia states “Almost everything we wanted to do we accomplished.” So without much fanfare he transferred the reins and the equipment of Erie’s Loan Closet, which consists of assistive devices and medical equipment that are loaned to Erie residents free of charge, to the Erie Rotary Club and its Erie Rotary Charity Fund. John has lived in Erie for 14 years, after having moved here from Louisville. He and former resident Lloyd Lehrke started the local Loan Closet in 2011, under the
“Almost everything we wanted to do we accomplished.” umbrella of the non-profit EASY-C (Erie Area Senior Advisory Committee). The committee saw a “gap” in services for Erie seniors. John continued with the loan closet, even after Lloyd relocated to North Dakota.
John Garcia and Rob Freeston
John Garcia is no stranger to hard work and a “can do” attitude. He began a long career of “starting and managing” when, at age 16, he worked in the credit department of a 5th Avenue, New York, NY department store that catered to debutants and to the wealthy. He climbed the retail ranks until he eventually managed Broadway Department Stores and 300 employees. John asserts that the program “is very positive and rewarding.” But as the years passed and he grew older, he looked for help in delivering the prized loans. He became acquainted with James Sites and Rob Freeston of the Erie Rotary Club. They in turn arranged for Erie Rotary Club members to deliver the loans, which consist of wheelchairs and transports, walkers, crutches, canes, toilet chairs, grab bars, etc.
BORN, RAISED AND HARVESTED IN THE USA
For Erie residents, the Loan Closet’s transition appears seamless. If one needs a donation, he or she still contacts Cindy Hickman at the Erie Community Center and she will contact the Rotary member that is on duty that month. Currently there is a rotation of three Rotarians performing the deliveries. They are Rob Freeston, John McCutchon and Mike Ward. Rotarian Jan Sciacca maintains the inventory and administrative forms. Although EASY-C launched the Loan Closet to serve Erie residents, 60 years of age and older, the Loan Closet is available to all residents, depending upon availability. Most recipients have showed their gratitude by making a donation to the organization to maintain or purchase more equipment. Jan Sciacca shares, “The Loan Closet’s rental storage units are $720 a year and are paid through the end of the year. The Erie Rotary Club is seeking donations to help offset the cost of facilitating this important benefit to Erie seniors and to the community.
John McCutchon and Mike Ward

Time, Never Enough Time
T
here is never enough time; to clean before company arrives, to pack before a trip, to say a proper goodbye. Especially if it is the “last” goodbye. This September seems especially hard for me. September 12th marks the year of my daughter’s 35th birthday. But Alisha would never see it. She died when she was nine and August 7, was the 25th Anniversary of her death. Twenty five years is such a long time when you are looking ahead, waiting for something to happen. And it is even longer when it was the last time you hugged your child. What causes the heart to grieve for such a long time, sometimes till your own death?
life fills that void quickly unless you truly, deeply, love the person who has died. In this case, there will always be a part of you
I know so many of you, who would give anything for one more day with your loved one who has died. that will never fully be complete, again. All because of love. I know so many of you, who would give anything for one more day with your loved one who has died. We know it is impossible, but we ponder “What if….” Most days are good days…but so far, September has seen many, many tears. Even on my recent camping trip to the St. Anthony Sand Dunes the inside of my helmet was drenched with tears as
Love If you do not love someone, the pain of the loss, well, there is no pain. There may be a temporary sadness, a yearning for the relationship lost. There is an emptiness. But
I maneuvered the huge bowls of sand. I don’t question “why” anymore, but my heart cries out to God about how much I still miss my children. You see, I also lost my 23-yr-old son, Jason, thirteen years ago. My heart is full of love for the rest of my family but there is a place that cannot be filled. You cannot replace those you love and have lost. The love of Jesus has comforted me. He has held me, dried my tears, and has shown me a way through my darkest days. Jesus has renewed my hope in life and living. He has given me much peace and joy. And He continues to comfort me on days like these. The Word tells me there are new mercies every morning. I am never alone in my sorrow and I KNOW that it will be better tomorrow. I’m thankful that the Love of God will never go away and it cannot ever be taken from us. It is our choice to receive it but God gave His Love, through His son Jesus Christ, to each and every one of us…no matter what we have done or who we have become. Time doesn’t matter in this area. It was accomplished one time, for all. I’m grateful I know it, Alisha knew it, Jason knew it and in His perfect time, you will know it too.

United Power Steps in to Provide Efficient Lighting for Local Riding Center United Power plays key role in assembling a partnership of community organizations to provide funds for an energy efficient lighting upgrade for the Colorado Therapeutic Riding Center (CTRC).
CTRC,
a nonprofit organization devoted to changing the lives of people with disabilities by promoting their physical, psychological and social wellbeing through equine assisted activities, was recently retrofitted with high efficient LED light bulbs throughout the facility. The project was made possible through assistance from United Power, a not-for-profit, memberowned, rural electric cooperative providing electric service to homes and businesses throughout Colorado’s northern Front Range. CTRC is located in United Power’s territory, so the nonprofit qualified for and was awarded a $5,000 grant from United Power’s Operation Round-Up Foundation, a charitable organization funded by members who “round-up” their electric bill to the next full dollar amount. CTRC also received $3,678 in rebates from United Power and Tri-State Generation and Transmission, United Power’s wholesale supplier, and $4,887 in rebates from Boulder County’s Partners for a Clean Environment (PACE) program. Elevation Lighting Services Company also donated the installation of the LED lights.
The project started after Bill Meier, a United Power Community Affairs Representative, stopped by CTRC in August 2013, curious about the type of lights in the arena. It is Meier’s job to assist businesses and organizations in the United Power territory with service, energy efficient upgrades and rebates. “Initially, what we noticed was that the center could save a significant amount of money if they could afford a lighting upgrade, but with a limited budget, the project wasn’t their top priority,” Meier said. “But it’s not just about dollar savings when we work with our members. By working cooperatively with other community organizations to make a project like this happen, we can truly make life better—and that’s what we are here to do for our members. Since the installation, staff members, volunteers and even the horses are seeing a difference. Heather McLaughlin, CTRC program director, said the new lighting system has made the office environment more comfortable for families and the tack room is better illuminated, providing
volunteers easier access to equipment. As for the horses at CTRC, they are striding into the arena a bit more confidently. “Horses struggle with depth perception, so anytime there are shadows cast it can make them nervous and unsure of where they’re going,” McLaughlin said. “The new lights remove those shadows, so the horses are able to confidently walk in, move forward and focus on their job.” Not only does the Round-Up program provide grants to organizations like CTRC, but will also provide one-time financial assistance to United Power members struggling to make ends meet. Since the start of the Round-Up program, the foundation has provided more than $1 million dollars to support individuals, families and organizations in the United Power territory. “Operation Round-Up is a great opportunity for people who want to support our members in need,” said Dale McCall, Round-Up Board President. “There are people less fortunate than some of us, so a small contribution each month allows us to give people a helping hand.” United Power, a Touchstone Energy®
Cooperative, is not-for-profit cooperative providing electric service to more than 75,000 member-owners at homes, businesses, and farms in Colorado’s north central front range. Learn how United Power is making life better the cooperative way, by visiting www.unitedpower.com. United Power’s Operation RoundUp Foundation is celebrating 20 years in 2015, and has granted over $1 million to worthy organizations and needy families in the United Power service territory. The program is funded entirely by United Power members who choose to “roundup” their monthly electric bill—an average donation of $6 per year. To learn more about Round-Up, visit www.unitedpower. com/operation-round-up/.

an Ohlin and his wife Carolyn have returned to Firestone, after having lived and worked in Phnom Penh, Cambodia for nearly 5 years. In mid-July 2015, they founded Top Tier Natural Cleaners, a residential cleaning service. They saw a need for a reliable, safe and high-quality
local cleaning company and also wanted to promote, by example, a means to support a clean-water charity. Their overseas experiences have caused them to be passionate about providing clean water to those less fortunate. The charity they support, via a percentage of their cleaning

sales, helps bring clean water to those who wouldn’t otherwise be able to have it. Top Tier Natural Cleaners works primarily in the Longmont and Carbon Valley area, although some jobs have taken them as far south as Washington Park in Denver and as far north as Fort Collins. Focusing primarily on residential services, they schedule regular cleaning services, one-time events like move-outs or getting the house in order for a party or event. A 20% discount is offered to those who have been referred by a client or to a client on his or her next job when they refer someone else who schedules service. Diana S, a Denver area realtor who posted her Top Tier comments on Yelp states, “I have used Dan and his team at Top Tier to do a move-out cleaning for my listing and they did a wonderful job. Top notch all the way plus they really care about what they do. Would highly recommend.” Dan proudly states, “We are simply a local family just like you bringing a service to the community. But beyond that, every time WE clean your house, YOU are
providing clean water to needy families half a world away.” Dan and Carolyn have been married 22 years and have a son Alex, 20; daughter Abby, 19; daughter Calli, 15; and son Cameron, 10. Dan enjoys running nearby, as well as trail running in the foothills. Top Tier Natural Cleaners is available 7:30am – 6:30pm, Monday through Saturday. 1. Any fees you’ll pay - How does this HOA monthly rate compare to others in similar developments nearby? 2. Where your money is going - Many HOAs maintain common amenities, such as pools, gym areas and outdoor landscaping. Check to see what’s included and what’s not. 3. Recent hikes in fees - Get a history of how much and how often the rates have risen over the past ten years. Ask also for a record of additional fees charged to homeowners when the HOA lacks the reserves to cover a big improvement, also known as “special assessments.” 4. Community priorities - Take a look at the minutes from the last few HOA board meetings. What topics keep appearing? Do they seem reasonable, or are they minor items that distract from bigger issues? 5. The Fine Print - Carefully examine all covenants,

From refugee to aristocracy: Erie woman’s life in war-torn Germany As told to Jim Stull, Author, A brief history of Erie, Colorado: Out of the coal dust (History Press) Editor’s Note: This is the final part of a six part series. The person featured in this series wishes to remain anonymous
Part six: Moving to America and Erie, Colorado In 1956, I worked in the pre-school at the American airbase where I met my future husband. He had been stationed in Yugoslavia in the early 1950s. Americans had been assigned to build air bases there and were treated royally by Tito. Eventually, he was sent to Germany. He had chosen the Air Force as his career. Taxes were awfully high in Germany. Germans were glad to have good jobs and incomes as they built bases and American soldiers’ off-base accommodations. In the late 1950s, I paid $12.50 for a nice apartment in a private home. The landlady let me have vegetables. My boyfriend loved to hunt. Sometimes, he
provided meat for the landlady’s family My landlady was always happy with what he provided. She approved of my dating because she liked my choice. My landlady’s husband had been in the war as well; even though he and my boyfriend fought on different sides, they got along well. The husband made beer barrels at the local brewery. He was allowed a certain quota of beer for himself. He told my boyfriend that he couldn’t drink it all himself, so they became good buddies. He had been a POW. He told us that when German POWs were captured, they were shipped to the States. He said he was treated well. When released, they were sent back home. We married in the late 1950s. In 1963, we came to America. My husband was still on active duty and served at a few airbases in the United States. In 1972, we purchased some land in Weld County and
would be involved for many years getting permission to build and arranging for utilities and potable water to be available for our property. In 1989, the little Russian satellite countries had begun to rebel; shortly thereafter, it was easier to visit and see some relatives. We visited Germany in 1990, at the time when the Iron Curtain fell. Ironically, this was also the year that the land that was once Germany was officially made part of Poland. The area that used to be Germany required that we have a visa. The people in the east zone didn’t need a visa. We went to my aunt and uncle’s house where we had stayed during and after the war. The Polish family that lived there was very friendly. We couldn’t understand each other, but we tried very hard. They showed us around the area, and we looked around in town. After 45 years, nothing

had been repaired from the War. The village was mostly destroyed; there had been much fighting there. All that was left of houses was bricks and mortar and maybe some wood. My grandparents had a big farm and house. It was not destroyed, but some of the barns were. We stopped to talk with the woman there, and she talked and talked. We couldn’t understand one word, but she was very friendly. We were with one cousin who had learned some Russian in the east zone. He understood that she was saying she liked it there but she wished that the land would be returned to Germany. She didn’t like living in Poland; she would rather live in Germany. In 1999, we finally moved into our beautiful home, in a peaceful neighborhood, with an unobstructed view of the Rockies, and over 300 days a year of sunshine—in Erie, Colorado.

“Pastor Ruby” Narucki: The Area’s Female Shepherd By Jan Sciacca
N
o one was more surprised than Ruby Narucki when at the age of 39, God called her to ministry. Not only was she called to ministry but Pastor Ruby Narucki is now the only full time female ordained pastor in the area. This mother of three taught history and a morality class in a college prep high school and thought she should go back to school to become a chiropractor when a good friend challenged Ruby to ponder the depth and breadth of her faith. Three months later, Ruby had enrolled in Pacific Lutheran Theological Seminary in Berkeley, a seminary where main line churches are represented. She had the support of her husband Marcel, who was a Roman Catholic at the time and a theologian. She remembers it being a time of lots of moving, personal sacrifices and grace. Ruby, now fondly called “Pastor Ruby” has been at Rejoice Lutheran Church in Erie 6+ years. She is not the Founding Pastor but calls herself the “Developing Pastor.” When she arrived, the church body had purchased five acres of land which butts up between Weld and Broomfield Counties. What a challenge it was to build a church and work with two different counties! After a year of seeking and acquiring financing and another year and a half to build and complete, the church was done! Then the floods of September 2013 came and so very much was lost. When the floods came, Pastor Ruby reminded herself that trials are inevitable and that it was time to reorganize her and the church’s thinking. The group stayed unified, raised funds some of which came from different parts of the country, and rebuilt. The flood is behind them and September 19 will be a grand rededication. A good shepherd keeps her flock together and when trials and difficulties came to Rejoice Lutheran,
launch a second “relaxed,” interactive and contemplative service in January. She’s not quite sure what to call the service or how it will look but she knows that when it happens, it will be special and well received by many. The congregation has doubled since Pastor Ruby has been at the pulpit, with the composition of the group being approximately 1/3 older established Lutherans, 1/3 young families under age 50 and 1/3 teens and children. The church attracts congregants from Brighton, Thornton, Frederick, Dacono, Erie, Lafayette, Louisville and Broomfield. Pastor Ruby’s husband Marcel is now a Lutheran Pastor and pastors a church in Aurora. He’s still active at Rejoice Lutheran and leads adult education. Pastor Ruby when not ministering to the flock, enjoys photography. She has taught
pottery and some may be surprised to learn she had a ceramic, art and painting studio previously. Staff at Rejoice Lutheran include Christina Schwind in administration, Debra Schmit-Lobis as Music Director and Jon Kamm as IT Specialist.
Rejoice Lutheran Church is located at 3413 Lowell Lane, Erie. Its Sunday service is at 9:30 am. Its phone number is 303.828.3953.

They are a Reformed Church, which means that they consider themselves to always be reforming and that one has an opportunity to have his or her thoughts and words heard. The church wants to be relevant in the context we live in. Pastor Ruby is excited about plans to
