Peak Performance Sprinklers Specializes in Sprinkler System Winterizing By Jan Sciacca
Craig has a motto: “When in doubt, blow it out.”
C
raig Hall, owner of Peak Performance Sprinklers, spends his autumns focusing on winterizing sprinkler systems. He also repairs sprinkler systems and helps with the startup process in the spring. With over 20 years’ experience, he tends to find himself at one client’s home and then a neighbor’s home and then another neighbor’s and so it goes. Craig started winterizing sprinkler systems when his older brother, who lived south of Denver, was doing the task and needed help. Since then his business has grown primarily by word of mouth. His in-
laws live in Erie and his Erie clientele has grown dramatically over the years. An average system takes 20-30 minutes to be winterized and typically costs $35-$55. Craig likes the homeowners to be present so he can personally make sure the master water valve to the sprinkler is closed.
Although some systems are marketed Peak Performance Sprinklers is that they can be drained instead of blown offering a discount for participating out, Craig has a motto, “When in doubt, neighbors. When neighbors book a blow it out.” He declares it is the safe thing winterization through Craig, each to do and the best “insurance.” He knows household receives a $5 discount. What’s On My Mind
Kelly Martindale, Publisher
Your Non-exclusive Media Source Covering All Sides Of Everything Important to You
“B
u i l d i n g relationships with our neighbors leads to better communities, better cities, and ultimately…a better world.” This was written by Ken Blanchard in his 2012 review of The Art of Neighboring by Jay Pathak and Dave Runyon. Our trademark phrase is Creating Community by Connecting Neighbors and it has been since 1999 with the first of three community newspapers. Just like Blanchard, we believe that the more connected you are to those you live around, the stronger and safer you are as a whole, as a community. Erie Consumer Report, along with the Carbon Valley and Mead counterparts, all strive to introduce readers to the owners of local services and products. And we do it at no charge with our feature articles and photos. In fact, all text in each publication is free. That includes obituaries, birthday and baby announcements, even the classified ads! The Erie Consumer Report is mailed, free of charge, to EVERY household and business with an Erie zip code.
Our goal is to offer EVERY type of business—from in-home too corporations—an introduction to those they serve, in and around their geographical areas of service. The majority of businesses and communities we serve are along the i25 Corridor. Businesses, if you have not had a free feature article written, please let us know! As a reader, if you visit a business that you read about in the ECR, please let them know. Developing a relationship between consumer and service provider can be difficult, especially if one doesn’t know the other exists. We help connect the two and we’ve been doing that for almost 18 years. We are local and independently owned. But we could not do it without both the readers and the businesses. It’s a group effort and we all need to work together to make it work for each individual and business. The Golden Rule tells us to “Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.” We strive to do that, every day. We do it by sponsoring Erie events and organizations. We are members of the Erie Chamber and support and promote their projects. When we hear of special accomplishments of students, we write about them. When changes are on the
horizon, we give you a “heads-up.” We give information regarding elections and candidates and we encourage local involvement at all levels. We don’t exclude some or show favoritism to others. The ECR is a venue for all to share their information to the general public in and around Erie, Colorado. In order to have strong communities and safe neighborhoods, you must be involved, in some way. You must invest your time and dollars in your own hometown in order to have the security and prosperity that each of us desires. A handful of people cannot provide all the strength, security and prosperity—it takes us all; each doing our own part. A cord of three strands is not quickly or easily broken—it’s an ongoing, large group effort. The Erie Consumer Report has been a part of this community for two years. Let us know how we can help you get the word out about your business, organization, classroom, or recreational program. We promise you, regardless of affiliation, size or memberships, we will do our best to present you to the Erie and i25 Corridor areas. Simply email erieconsumerreport@ gmail.com and you may view previous issues at www.erieconsumerreport.com or call 303.775.5901.

Allnutt Family of Funeral Homes to Host Take A Stand Campaign
T
he Allnutt Family of Funeral Homes is hosting the Front Range chapter of AARP in support of their Take A Stand campaign. Please plan to join us and tell others about this important initiative. Here are the facts: It’s a promise that’s been kept for generations. You pay into Social Security, you get the benefits you earned. But to keep that promise for future generations, Social Security needs to be updated for the 21st century. If our leaders don’t act, you, your kids, and generations to come could lose. Every year our leaders wait and do nothing,

finding a solution grows more difficult. The only way to make progress is for our national leaders to make Social Security a priority and put serious proposals on the table. That’s why AARP is pressing every candidate to Take A Stand – and lay out their plan*to update Social Security so it’s financially sound with adequate benefits. You work hard and pay into Social Security and you deserve to know how the candidates will lead so you can have a say. Attend the Take A Stand presentation to get more information and find out how you can be a part of the campaign.

Lafayette Homebrew Supply Celebrates 3rd Anniversary By Jan Sciacca
L
afayette, Homebrew Supply, owned by George Otteni, celebrated its 3rd Anniversary September 1. The independent small business and home to all one’s fermenting needs, is located in the back of the walk-through atrium in Lafayette Marketplace at 400 S. South Boulder Rd. in Lafayette. It has made reputation for having exceptional customer service, integrity, fresh quality products and a passion to make its community a better place. George and his team have everything one needs to make beer, wine or whatever else you may want to ferment at home. They have an extensive selection of base malts, specialty malts, pellet and leaf hops, liquid yeast strains (Wyeast and White Labs), dry yeasts for beer, wine, cider and mead, wine kits, beer kits, and all the equipment you’ll need including CO2 and kegging and draft supplies. They also have cheese-making kits and soda-making ingredients. The staff is very knowledgeable and eager to help the beginner get started on his or her quest. One of the things that has been most
rewarding for George is the co-sponsorship of an annual Charity Pro-Am Homebrew Competition. The co-sponsoring brewing company partner has rotated from year to year but the charity that has benefitted remains the same. Sister Carmen Community Center receives 100% of the funds raised. In addition to the kudos of winning and receiving some neat prizes, the grand prize winner has the privilege of having his or her personal recipe brewed at the commercial brewmaster’s site and in their equipment! The next Pro-Am registration will be in early 2017 so now’s the time to be perfecting your competition brew. George enjoys experimenting with fermentation. He makes beer, mead, wine, banana beer, cider, some things that don’t have names and he likes ice cream too. Lafayette Homebrew Supply’s hours are Mon.-Fri, 11am-7pm, Sat., 10am-5pm and Sun. 10am-3pm. Contact information is 720.484.5756, lafayettehomebrew.com and george@lafayettehomebrew.com.

Safety in Real Estate
S
elling your home is stressful enough. If you are selling your home with a Realtor or even For Sale By Owner (FSBO), take some extra steps to secure your home and yourself. 1. When placing ads or displaying a yard sign, scammers will also notice. It’s never OK for anyone to enter your home unannounced. Even with an appointment, it’s best to have a Real Estate agent along. 2. Don’t tell someone that you can’t show it because you won’t be home. Tell them that you are busy at that time and set another time. 3. For safety, keep the front of your body to the Buyer. Let the Buyer enter areas first so you won’t be caught offguard from behind. 4. Don’t let people roam through your home unescorted. Remove your valuables or put them in a safe; medicines, CDs, DVDs, checkbooks, bank statements, money/change, electronics or anything else of personal or resale value is often targeted. 5. Use advertising as your first layer of protection and interest. Include phrases like “Appointment only” and “Driver’s license required for admission” and “Pre-approved documents required.” Have all Buyers sign in. 6. If you are alone when showing the property, think in terms of areas where you might not be heard, such as a basement, attic, garage, etc. Lock the front door behind you so no one can enter while you are showing—and also determine an escape route if needed. 7. Trust your gut and pay attention to your intuition. If something seems wrong, it is.
8. A home security system is worth it. It secures the home and can increase the resale value. 9.Make sure that windows and doors are locked after visitors leave. Do a full sweep of your home to make sure that no one is still in the house and that all your possessions are intact. 10. It’s always prudent to be safe, not sorry! Kathryn Novak, Broker/Owner Metro Brokers-Novak Realty has been a REALTOR® in the Erie and surrounding areas for 17 years. Besides her MBA in Business Administration, she has a minor in Art and Design and stages most of the homes she sells. She also carries several advanced designations, CRS, GRI, SRES and CNE. For questions or real estate advice, she can be reached at 303-3329122 or knovak52@gmail.com
Vista Animal Hospital “Caring Differently, From the Eyes of Your Pet” By Jan Sciacca
V
ista Animal Hospital, 3200 Village Vista Drive, Suite 100, Erie, officially opens September 20, although some pets have requested an advance preview. Dr. Bonnie Abbott was prompted to start Vista Animal Hospital after she lost her eldest sister Sarah to cancer. It caused her to evaluate her own life and decide to realize a life-long dream of opening her own animal hospital. Dr. Abbott is passionate about being a veterinarian and believes in the human-animal bond and the joy pets bring to our lives. Dr. Abbott grew up in Fort Collins, about a mile from the CSU veterinary school. From an early age, she wanted to become a vet, a teacher, a counselor, a scientific researcher, a dolphin trainer, and an artist. During college, she realized that she could become nearly all of these things as a veterinarian. She treats dogs, cats, guinea pigs, rabbits, ferrets, and other small pocket pets. Dr. Abbott has always had a knack for being able to calm nervous pets during their exams. A recent movement in veterinary medicine is to focus on
lowering stress in pets to improve quality of care. Vista Animal Hospital, is “FearFree Certified” which means the staff has had extra training in how to minimize stress in pets at the vet. The entire hospital was designed with this idea in mind. Vista Animal Hospital has separate waiting areas for dogs and cats. They have a dedicated cat only exam room complete with a fish tank window at the exam table. The kitty condos have the new cage designs to maximize comfort and minimize stress in cats. The exam rooms have no exam tables for dogs. Instead, dogs are examined on comfortable dog couches low to the ground. The dog and cat wards are separated as far as space allows and the walls are sound insulated which creates the best environment for healing. From the colors on the walls to the lobby fireplace, every detail was chosen to create a home-like setting. “Dr. Abbott is a highly skilled, caring, and compassionate veterinarian. She has cared for our pets for more than a decade though several difficult illnesses. We trust

As a family, they enjoy camping and hiking in the mountains. She also enjoys painting and played viola in the Longmont Symphony before her kids were born. In addition to Dr. Abbott, Alice Forschmiedt, of Lafayette, has joined the team at Vista Animal Hospital. An Open House is being held on Saturday October 8, 11am-3pm. There will
be lots of free family activities and tours of the animal hospital. An official ribbon cutting ceremony is scheduled at noon and raffle prizes given away at 2 pm. Vista Animal Hospital is conveniently located 2 miles west of I-25 on Highway 7 and will be open: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday 8 am-5 pm, and 1st and 3rd Saturdays of each month from 9 am-3pm. Jeri shares, “We run into a lot of situations where people lose all of their family photos when a hard drive fails. Being proactive, saves a lot of time, expense, and heartache.” She especially remembers a time when they had a client with a crashed hard drive that had all of his business information on it and had never done a backup on it. Code Blue was able to recover all of his data inhouse, saving his business. The Morgans consider their customers to be an extension of their family. Jeri says, “Computers are really a fantastic gateway for us to be able to communicate with one another and we get the chance to maintain that connection for our clients.” Clients are passionate about Code Blue Computing. New Erie Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics Offers No Shots, No Drills and Colorful Braces By Jan Sciacca
D
r. Namrata and Dr. TC Hardy, owners of Hardy Pediatric Dentistry and Orthodontics, 3200 Village Vista Drive, Suite 110, Erie, have been practicing at their new location since mid-August. They’re already enamored with the great community support of their Erie neighbors helping to spread the news of their opening. The Hardys, a husband and wife team, are excited to bring innovative new pediatric dentistry to Erie and northern Colorado. Currently, Dr. Nam is the only pediatric dentist in the state, and only 1 of 15 in the nation to offer Solea laser treatment. This means no more scary shots and little to no drilling. It is really amazing and kids love it! Dr. Nam Hardy is a Pediatric Dentist who believes in prevention of dental problems and in educating families about how they can have healthy smiles for life. With free infant exams and
parental education she is sure to get them off to the right track from the very beginning. Other benefits of the laser include better elimination of bacteria within the tooth before the filling goes in. There is stronger bonding for fillings and reduced sensitivity after the child is done with their procedure. Pediatric dentistry is for infants, babies, children, teens and young adults up to age 21. Dr. TC Hardy is an Orthodontist who is excited to offer clear, colorful braces as the standard . . .with less breakage and initial findings of less white-spots (the start of cavities). He adds, “We live in 2016. Why are metal braces still the normal? Let’s get something esthetic as the standard!” He also offers advanced alternatives to traditional orthodontics – such as Invisalign and Incognito. With a separate orthodontic area he performs treatment for both adult and adolescent patients. Dr. TC Hardy offers orthodontics for the
whole family with several treatment options available. He shares, “Nam and I set the office up beautifully with complementing sides for the children’s dentistry and the orthodontics so no matter what age the person coming is, they will feel welcome.” The husband and wife team live near their practice and are parents of a 5 monthold baby boy. In their spare time they used to enjoy winter sports and going to restaurants and movies but with an infant in the house that has changed . . .for now. For Erie Consumer Report readers, the Hardy’s are offering two specials. Those are: a new patient exam, fluoride, cleaning and Childs tooth brush for $50 or $500 off comprehensive orthodontic treatment whether with clear braces, Invisalign, or
OMG!!! I FORGOT MY EYE BROWS!!! Sunday and the entire family has In utter humiliation Mom races for Cosmetic Tattooing. However, traditional Iandt’sgathered at Mom’s. The scene is serene her bedroom mirror to begin the daily tattooing (performed in a tattoo “parlor”) just the aromas themselves are adding ritual of penciling in her eyebrows. Even and Medical Cosmetic Tattooing pounds to my hips as we speak. Agony (moans) and ecstasy (cheers) from the football game of the hour volley from the man cave. In the kitchen, Mom stands at the mixer folding enough butter and cream into her famous mashed potatoes to bring on a bout of angina. My brother is making the rounds with his index finger “taste testing” every dish possible. Suddenly, the euphoric scene is shattered by the sound of the potato bowl splintering on the floor. Mom’s hands cover her face in horror as she cries, “OMG, I forgot my eyebrows”! With matching horror in his voice, my insensitive brother screams, “OH NO, MOM! Where’d you leave ‘em”?! As he dashes around the kitchen lifting and shifting everything to see if there is a stray pair of eye brows hiding there.
with years of practice, they never have and never will, look real. For the woman or man without eyebrows, this is the stuff that nightmares are made of! While the masses are chuckling, the man or woman with a Thyroid Disorder (causing extreme thinning or complete loss of hair growth), Chemotherapy and/or Radiation, Alopecia (an auto immune disorder that causes the partial or TOTAL lack of hair growth everywhere on the body), or Vitiligo (the progressive loss of melanin ‘color pigment’ in the skin and hair, as in Michael Jackson’s Disease) is ravaging the mental health and self-confidence of millions of Americans and people throughout the world. It doesn’t have to be this way folks! The age old art of tattooing has come to the rescue in the new form of Medical

In the state of Colorado Permanent Cosmetics Artists are required to be state licensed Cosmetologists or Aestheticians plus have additional training in permanent makeup. Color, placement, symmetry, ethnicity, image, lifestyle and the age of the client must all be taken into consideration before any permanent implanting can take place. With eye brow cosmetic tattooing, colored pigment is implanted to mimic “HAIRS” growing from your brow area.
