Doulas: Professional Birth Coaches

By Audrey Logan Giving birth is a life changing experience and having the right support team can make or break your experience. Some people choose to have their husbands, partners, mothers, siblings, or a friend be their birth coach. But, what if you need more support than that? What if you’re not confident in your own abilities as a woman, or confident that your support person can withstand seeing you in that much pain to effectively help you? Or, what if you just want the extra help and experience? That is where a doula comes in.

Doula’s are trained professionals who help women cope during their labor, delivery, and post-partum period.

Doula’s are, generally women, who have a passion for helping other women during this great life changing experience!

They go through hours of training to learn how to coach women during this pivotal point in their lives.

They are not all one and the same; each doula has her own personality and tricks of the trade. Finding the doula that works best with your personality is important. As is, finding the doula who supports your visions of your labor and delivery.

By Audrey Logan Sheila Broderick is a local photographer who has a passion for what she does. Not only can you see it in her pictures, but also when she is photographing you. She takes special care to capture the moments that make you special, unique, and beautiful or handsome.

Sheila specializes in senior portraits, boudoir, and musician photography.

Sheila (pictured at right) works out of her home in Frederick, having transformed her living room and dining room into an amazing studio that allows for versatile and stunning shots. She also uses her backyard for outdoor shots, and is willing to travel within 25 miles of her home for location

C a r l and Merna first met in 1977 when their families attended the same church in Cincinnati.

The families became close friends and, although Merna and her family moved back to Colorado, where she was born, in the mid-eighties, they stayed in contact. Merna and Carl’s first wife Jean remained very close friends and prayer partners.

Due to unfortunate circumstances, Merna and her husband of over thirty years were divorced in 1995 and Jean passed away in 2003. After Jean’s passing, Merna was very supportive of Carl with encouraging cards and notes. Then while vacationing together in Florida at the invitation of mutual friends, they found they had a lot in common and enjoyed each other’s company. Bolstered by a strong mutual faith in the Lord, their relationship progressed to the point where Carl decided he wanted Merna to be his wife and he thought she had similar feelings for him.

Being a crossword buff, Carl decided to propose to her by constructing a crossword with his marriage proposal in it. That’s when he discovered Merna didn’t really care for crosswords. After coaxing and cajoling her into trying his “special� crossword, Merna became rather irritated long before getting to the important question, and it looked like their marriage was over before it began. Fortunately, it didn’t work out that way and they have been happily married for almost eight years. And, Merna even does crosswords now. She does the one in the Longmont paper almost every day and also is the first one to do any new puzzle Carl constructs, such as the ones for CVCR, to see if the clues and answers make sense.

As I prayed about what to write this month, I kept hitting road blocks. My husband prayed for me and others prayed as well. I had something started but it continued to dead-end. I pondered love for a Valentine's theme. Of course, for me, there is nothing greater than Christ's love so I leaned into it.

Then I received the following. My heart wept for this family and also rejoiced because they have experienced the ultimate love; love of two becoming one, love of children, family and friends. And the most important love of all, the love and grace of Christ, cruciďŹ ed for each one of us...to last all the days of our lives. The Marschalls live this daily.

Personally, she thinks this is a human trait that God understands.

At Sunday's prayer service, the last hymn was "Amazing Grace," but the tape that the Marschalls had brought along – to guide the impromptu choir – failed to include the second verse. This was a verse that Rick Marschall found particularly meaningful. As the tape rolled to the end, he urged everybody on: "Through many dangers, toils and snares I have already come. . . ."

Quilts Bring Help to O.U.R. Center and Safe Shelter

For the 27th year, Interfaith Quilters of Longmont is more intent than ever to raise much needed funds for the O.U.R. Center of Longmont and the Safe Shelter of St. Vrain Valley.

With the exception of a small amount of money necessary to purchase materials, the entire amount raised at the sale benefits these two charities equally. Again in 2013, the sale will be held at the First Lutheran Church of Longmont, 803 3rd Ave in Longmont.

New this year is a featured quilt recently located in the church basement by members of the First Lutheran Archives Committee. This red and white friendship quilt was created in 1895 by the “ladies of the SW Lutheran Sewing Society of Boulder”, which is a precursor to First Lutheran. This is a rare find, especially important for several members of the First Lutheran Church who are descendants of those whose names are embroidered on the quilt. Interfaith Quilters is proud to be able to display this quilt. Members of the Archives Committee will be on hand on both days to answer any questions and expound on the history of the quilt, the Boulder area and it’s early settlers.

The sale is always on the first weekend in March, which, this year, will be Friday, March 1st (Preview night) and Saturday, March 2nd (Sale Day). Interfaith Quilters has grown in membership over the past twenty-seven years and the resultant number and quality of quilts, table runners, pillows, etc. is astounding. Our baby quilts are the most popular items because of the spectacular quality and reasonable prices.

Frederick Tree Vouchers

2013 Tree Voucher Distribution. The Parks and Open Space Commission is prepared to issue the 2013 Tree Vouchers to the first 50 folks on Saturday, February 23 at 11:00 at Town Hall. Vouchers are available for residents to plant a tree on their property in Frederick and are valued at $100 good towards a tree valued at least $150.

CPR/AED Classes to Be Offered

by Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District

The Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District will offer several Blended Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) classes to the community in 2013.

“The key to saving a life could be as simple as being prepared in the event of an emergency,” said Division Chief of Life Safety Doug Prunk. “CPR training offers this and it’s easy.”

The Blended CPR/AED program at the Fire District allows community residents the chance to get CPR and AED trained all at once. Through the Blended CPR/AED program, offered through the American Safety and Health Institute, residents can save time and money, and more importantly lives.

The blended program is ideal for anyone who wants to know CPR and how to use an AED, and offers the flexibility of online learning. The digitized course book can be accessed online from any computer, at any time. Once the two-to-three hours of course work are done at home, an instructor-led, inclass skills check will be done.

The first in-class skills check will be on March 28, but those who are hoping to attend the class will need to register by Feb. 28. For more information or to sign up for an upcoming Blended CPR/AED program offered through the Fire District, visit www.fffd.us or call 303.833.2742.

CV Rotary Easter Egg Hunt

Carbon Valley Rotary is excited to announce our 6th Annual Easter Egg Hunt to be held Saturday, March 30, from 1 to 3 pm at Hart Park in Firestone, CO. There will be five “hunt” areas divided by age and height. Only 10 to 12 children will be allowed in each area at a time – and the Easter Egg Hunt will last the entire 2 hour period. At least 300 of the 5,000 eggs will have a “Free Book Ticket” that the children can trade for an age appropriate book. We invite non-profit organizations to set up a Free Booth to let the community know about your services. We would also like anyone who would like to volunteer their time, or donate money, books, or wrapped candy that will fit in a small plastic Easter Egg, to please contact us. This is also a good opportunity for students to receive volunteer credit for their school. I, along with many others in Colorado, have spent years fighting for this project and I encourage you to join the long list of supporters. Unfortunately, there is a huge amount of misinformation circulating through pop culture that is meant to instill fear through supposition and hyperbole.

Even more disappointing is the fact that behind the fear tactics is an extremist agenda that seeks to outlaw all petroleum based energy.

Here in Firestone we implement a balanced, rational approach to oil and gas development. We understand that every human activity has pros/cons, therefore we enact policies that properly mitigate risks Chad Auer

z This year is off to a great start in the City of Dacono. I am pleased to announce that Henry Walker Homes is the newest home Charles Sigman builder in the City of Dacono. They are building new homes in Sharpe Farms featuring a variety of floor plans and models. Later this spring, you should be able to walk through a model home. Rickenbaugh Infiniti will begin construction later this year on a 19,000 square foot car dealership in the Dacono Gateway Centre.

The City is also beginning work on its annual capital z improvement projects. This year Dacono will have a lot of activity occurring as water lines, sidewalks, and streets throughout the City are upgraded or replaced. The Council also approved funding for improvements to city parks and the BMX facility.

You always know spring is around the corner when planning z for the Annual Dacono Easter Egg Hunt is underway. This is one of the City’s most popular annual events. In order to make it a success, your help is needed. The Library needs an estimated 1,000 new or gently used clean eggs. If you can donate eggs or small item to stuff inside, please drop them by City Hall by March 15. z Don’t forget that if you have a graduating high school senior who plans on attending college or a vocational institution, the City is accepting applications for the annual scholarship program. Applicants must be a resident of Dacono and have at least a 2.5 GPA. Scholarship forms are available online at www.cityofdacono.com or by contacting the

City Clerk. Applications are due by April 18, 2013.

z 2013 promises to be an outstanding year for the Town of Frederick. z Last month, the Tony Carey Board of Trustees conducted its second Annual Retreat. The Retreat identified goals and objectives to achieve quality community outcomes. Some of the identified outcomes include a new monument sign at Highway 52 and Colorado Boulevard, emphasis and dedication to the revitalization of downtown, and economic development focus on retail to balance the strong residential construction in our community and the exploration of a community conference center.

One aspect of our downtown planning involves the z construction of a gazebo for concerts in tandem with the farmer's market.

New potted plants and banners will be added downtown and new bike racks will be added to encourage more cycle-friendly visitors. z Citizens will be asked to provide feedback concerning the regional needs and location for a new community conference center. Our goal is to provide a destination facility for our community and the region as a whole. z I'm pleased to announce that Jamie Adamson has been hired as the Administrative Assistant to Town Manager Matt LeCerf. Her role is to help the Manager coordinate, communicate, and streamline operations between the citizens, businesses and the Town. Please help us make Jamie feel welcome. z Recently the Town's Water Commission met after undergoing comprehensive changes. A renewed focus and purpose has been established. Both short and long term planning will be carried out through effective leadership and coordination. Water along the Front Range in Colorado is a critical resource. Effective water resource planning is fundamental as we continue to grow. Frederick plans to be a leader in water resource planning and implementation moving forward.

Aims Community College is offering students who attend participating schools the opportunity to earn college credit and explore career options while still in high school. Historical Train Mural at Mr. Todd's Barbershop

Todd Fischer of Mr. Todd’s Barbershop in Frederick is excited to invite you to view another historical piece in Frederick. Todd joined with Jennifer Hall, a local artist, to bring the Carbon Valley yet another piece of history; namely, a mural depicting Steam Engine # 1253 from the early 1900s. Along with help from area museums, they found photos of an old Frederick train depot, as well as a train that commonly ran through what is now the Carbon Valley.

Jennifer owns and operate "An Artists Vision" at 246 1/2- 5th street. She has a small art studio that offers private art lessons to anyone interested in engaging their artistic endeavors, from the ages 5 - 105! She offers adults, canvas or wine glass painting nights on a small and intimate level. She also offers private lessons in drawing and painting to anyone that feels they have a passion for the arts. Jennifer says, “I honestly feel that time can come to a peaceful stop or pause at least when we allow ourselves to escape in our passions. 10 Things This Painter WILL Tell You

A friend recently sent me a link to an article titled, Top 10 Things Your House Painter Wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t Tell You. At first glance I was a bit offended. I felt the article was full of generalizations regarding painting contractors and contractors in general. Maybe there are painters out there that are deceitful, so all I can do is tell you why the way we do business is something you should look for from your painting contractor.

Assumption number one from this author was that painters mark up their materials costs to you by 25%. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t. In fact we pass our discounts on to our customers when bidding their work.

You may be held responsible for accidents. Not by us. We carry full liability, auto and workerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s comp insurance and all reputable contractors do. Current certificates verifying our coverage are available from our carriers upon request.

Our employees donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t really work for us. Our employees are full time, trained painters. Many have worked for us long term and were trained by us. We donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t use subcontractors.

Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re not really painters. The author states there are those who, laid

off by their current jobs are passing themselves off as painters. I believe the average consumer can spot these guys. Needless to say if your painter doesnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t have the proper equipment, signage, a website, references, a portfolio, i.e., an established business, he may not have the expertise, help and funds needed to complete your job.

Fake references. We receive a lot of accolades and are proud to share them.

Lack of lead removal certification. Its required by law. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re lead abatement certified. If your home was built before 1978 the paint could contain lead and that may need to be addressed the next time you paint.

Deposits. A standard practice in the painting industry, we ask for a deposit for two reasons. One to keep your place on the schedule, two, to cover the cost of materials and the initial labor for your job.

Warranties. The author literally has no positive comment on the subject. Our warranty is very clear.

We offer a 5 year warranty on our labor. Period. And most reputable paint suppliers have a much longer guarantee on their products. If the paint is applied properly its a win-win situation for everyone.

The author continues to imply more unethical practices such as not finishing jobs, liens, etc. Job arenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t paid until the work is complete so it makes sense for us to get the job done as soon as possible.

The bottom line is as consumers we need to do a little homework before selecting who works on our home.

Single Parent Family Programs

Since their marriage, Carl and Merna, although residing in Frederick, have spent a good deal of time traveling with a lot of it involving keeping up with children and grandchildren. Three of their five children and seven of their fifteen grandchildren live out of state. Two, with six grandchildren, are in Missouri. Randy is a pastor in Bolivar, Patti is a teacher in the Kansas City area and Kevin and his daughter reside in the greater Cincinnati area where Kevin is a police officer on the Covington, KY police force. The other two children and eight of the grandchildren are nearby; Jodi and her family in Frederick and Garyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s in Longmont, although Gary works most of the time in Laramie, WY where he is an ER physician. Jodi and her husband, Adam, opened the Deja Lu bookstore last February next to the Dairy Queen in Firestone and are currently in the process of expanding it to include a coffee house slated for opening this February.

Their travel has declined in the past year due to some health issues.

Merna has experienced several discomfiting symptoms which a number of tests and visits to specialists have failed to alleviate. She is now resolved to carry on with her life while praying, believing and expecting Godâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s healing touch. Prayers for this are appreciated.

Carl hopes some of you have enjoyed doing the crossword puzzles that Kelly Martindale, the publisher of CVCR, has graciously been running for about two years now. He encourages those of you who havenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t tried crosswords before to give them a shot some time. They can be fun. Carl started doing crosswords nearly 30 years ago when he was not quite fifty after reading several articles that said doing puzzles help keep the mind healthy as you age. Carl says, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m not sure how much theyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve helped in that regard but I still enjoy doing them.â&#x20AC;?

If you have done some of the crosswords or paid any attention at all to them, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;m sure youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve probably noticed that there is a theme for each puzzle. Carl thought it might be fun to create some future puzzles based on themes suggested by CVCR readers. Most of the themes he uses are Christian or Biblically based; although heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tried to base some on the local area or the month such as a Presidentâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day puzzle for Feb. If you have any ideas for themes in these areas, please email them to CVCR at carbonvalley@gmail.com using these guidelines: Include both clues and answers, about a maximum of six per theme. Because of the relatively small size of these puzzles, 13x13, Carl prefers the answers to be between 3 to 6 letters long. Hopefully, there are some crossword enthusiasts among CVCR readers who might like to respond to this request. Please try not to make the clues or answers too obscure; these are meant to be â&#x20AC;&#x153;user friendlyâ&#x20AC;? not New York Times type puzzles.

Frederick Resident, Norma McCleary says, "It's Grammie's 100th birthday! Norma Toussaint, was born Norma Daley on 01-25-1913. She is from a family of 11 children and lived virtually all her life in Northern Vermont. She married Roland Toussaint (1932?) and had 5 children, 15 grandchildren, plus great and great-great ( I don't have the count).

She worked as a housekeeper, and then at WT Grant after my grandfather died (around 1967). She was very industrious and known for her hospitality, baking, and quick wit.

She said, "Make sure to share that I still drive (despite being legally blind)! I 'drive' everybody crazy".

She is a Catholic woman of faith. Norma's most vivid take away as a kid was, "Her telling us kids that to be happy you have to remember

How Does Leucine Help With Weight Loss?

Most of you are asking yourself, what is leucine and why is it important? Leucine is an essential branched chain amino acid, which means your body can't produce it on its own, so you must ingest it. Leucine can be found in certain foods like legumes, egg whites, and protein powders/bars, in more recent years becoming popular among athletes and those looking to lose weight.

People that are physically active use leucine to help prevent the breaking down of muscle protein during exercise, and in the maintenance and repair of muscles after working out. Those that are trying to lose weight use leucine to help retain muscle mass to keep their metabolism going strong.

Research has shown that leucine is unique in that it spares muscle proteins during weight loss, so you lose fat and not muscle. It stimulates the body to burn subcutaneous fat in order to build muscle tissue. It is known that pound for pound, muscles burn more calories than fat, so keeping muscle while losing weight is an important part of your weight loss success.

The problem with conventional diets is that you lose muscle along with fat, slowing down your metabolism and making it easier to regain the weight again, hence the yo-yo diets. Leucine will help prevent this by building lean muscle tissue, resulting in increased energy levels and more weight loss in less time.

A safe and realistic goal when losing weight is averaging 1 to 2 pounds per week. Only weigh yourself once a week and also measure your results by inches lost, so you can see the results on paper as you track your success.

Look for a weight loss program with scientific proof. In a preliminary clinical study, participants lost an average of 15.4 pounds in 12 weeks, an average of 4 inches and up to 8.5 inches off their waist, and 3 inches from their hips. Even more remarkable was that participants in the study retained nearly all of their lean muscle.

New Community Theater in Carbon Valley

My name is Cindy Garritt and I have been serving on the Cultural and Performing Arts Committee for the Town of Frederick as a commissioner since 2010. We are the group responsible for Frederick’s Tree Lighting Ceremony in Crist Park, and were very involved with Frederick in Flight, as well as providing support for the Thursday Farmer’s Market in Frederick over the summer. It has been a long-term goal to begin a community theater in the Carbon Valley area offering family friendly productions which inspire, encourage and entertain.

It is with great excitement that I am announcing the Carbon Valley Community Theater will offer our first-ever production of “The Dixie Swim Club,” to be performed at a brand new outdoor gazebo June 6 to be constructed at Crist Park.

We will hold auditions at the Town of Frederick, in the town hall on Saturday, February 23 at 10 a.m. We are in need of five middle aged women, ages 35-55 and four senior ladies, ages 65+.

THE STORY: Five Southern women, whose friendships began many years ago on their college swim team, set aside a long weekend every August to recharge those relationships. Mead Mayor Report zz Good gravy, here we are in February already and the year appears to be flying by. As I write this article it is the third week in January. I had the opportunity to visit the Rocky Mountain National Park just yesterday and was sorely disappointed at the small amount of snow in the mountains.

I do believe that the snow should be confined to the grassy areas and the forests and not on the roads, but we do need the moisture or else we will suffer another summer of drought. Please keep that in mind and conserve that precious commodity necessary to all of us, namely water. zz Good time to update our calendars with some dates. Town clean up days are scheduled for April 5 and 6 with alternate days the following weekend of April 12 and 13.

Location for cleanup will be at the Mead ponds. Easter also comes early this year and accordingly the Mead Easter Egg Hunt, organized and run by the volunteer Parks and Recreation Committee, will be held on March 30. zz Your town is a busy place and be aware that during the next month or so the old town sewers and some of Mead Western Meadows will be jetted and camera recorded so we can assure they function correctly and we can head off any problems before they become big ones. We also have a report on 2012 activity from the Building Department and you also have been very busy taxpayers last year. Between building permits and new construction there were 2,491 inspections with a dollar value exceeding $13.3 million. zz I had the opportunity to attend the annual Longmont United Hospital volunteer appreciation lunch last week. It was reported by Mitch Carson, the CEO of the hospital, that the volunteers put in over 56,000 hours last year. The Town of Mead also has some great volunteers and I want to thank Bethene Ainsworth for agreeing to be on the Community Day Committee and Chuck Gehringer for being on the Parks and Recreation Committee. Just a little soap box on volunteerism …. It is my belief that volunteers make this country great. The emphasis that we try to portray is that Mead is a unique and great place to live, work and play. We also try to showcase the local businesses and the products and services they offer.

While we are all comfortably in our warm houses please keep in your mind and prayers the men and women in our armed forces that protect our freedoms.

Lynn and his staff are involved with the surrounding communities. In particular, they have been active with the local women's shelters by providing much needed appliances.

His generous spirit touches those around him. One of Lynn’s employees and a friend joined efforts to provide a washing machine to a local safe house. Lynn had no idea this happened until after the fact. Now that's something to be proud of.

When the empty nesters, Lynn and Michaele, get a chance to sneak away, they enjoy camping and going to the mountains.

If they feel like a little noise would be good, they visit their five grand children. Of course they love to see their other two sons Cole and Dylan when that's possible.

What gets them up every day? Lynn says, “It's the different

people that they will encounter and the help and knowledge that they can provide to them!”

I would say this is the appliance store to stop by. Their hours of operation are Monday through Friday 8am to 6pm and Saturdays 10 am to 3 pm. While there, you will learn a little about new appliances and a family that knows and cares about you.

Mead High School Spring Sports Poster

The Mead Area Chamber of Commerce supports a variety of local community groups and organizations.

In an effort to raise funds for the Mead High School Athletic Department, the M.A.C.C. has created a poster with sports schedules for each season. These posters will be posted around the community, in various businesses, at Mead High School and homes within the area.

Businesses who are interested in advertising space have a variety of options available to them, from 1 ½ x 2 ¾ in. spaces to 3 x 5 ½ in. spaces.

The Mead Area Chamber in conjunction with Mead High School will distribute 500 posters in the local area.

Keep in mind that every customer who walks into an establishment that has a Mead High School sports poster will see these ads, as will everyone who walks into the high school, or visits a home that has a poster. Posters will be delivered to local businesses and passed out at the first home game for each team. Taking part in this advertising opportunity helps to develop a brand, while supporting Mead High School.

The size of the posters is 12 x 18, with a minimum of 500 posters being printed. 1 ½ x 2 ¾ in. spaces will be $175 each; 3 x 5 ½ in. spaces are $600. Also businesses that are interested in larger posters may purchase an additional 24 x 36 poster for $40.

For the 2012-2013 Winter sports season the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce was able to present the Mead High School Athletic Department with a check for $2,565. So far this program has been an amazing success.

The Mead High School Athletic Department will receive 50% of the proceeds from these posters. The last date to purchase ad space on the spring 2013 poster will be February 22nd. Editorial Contribution To The Carbon Valley Consumer Report My name is Bill Meier. I serve as president of the board of the Carbon Valley Chamber. I recently sat with Ms. Kelly Martindale for a cup of coffee and conversation about her publication, The Carbon Valley Consumer Report. I am in high regard to this paper for the number and diversity of businesses that appear in this publication. I counted over 70 business ads in these 24 pages for January. Those are 70 businesses reaching out to the community and saying: “We are open for business and we want to connect with you.”

As president of the chamber I respect the availability of the Carbon Valley Consumer Report to our local businesses. Over 15,000 issues are printed and distributed each month. This is a huge opportunity to promote the local businesses to the community. Each month the community can access the Consumer Report to find a spectrum of goods and services offered right here at home.

I appreciate the Consumer Report for its purpose to connect businesses to the community and to offer an informative interview with select businesses each month. Many of the businesses that advertise in the Consumer Report are chamber members, but not all of them are. To those business that are not members, I invite you to consider membership to the chamber. Firestone's Sierra Morganti~11 Countries in 11 Months Please Help Her Change Lives Today

At 5:00 PM on Friday, January 18, 2013, Mountain View Fire Rescue responded to reports of a fully involved building fire at the Sombrero Ranch, 10111 Niwot Road, just west of Highway 287 in unincorporated Boulder County. Upon the arrival of first due units firefighters found a fully involved ranch maintenance building with fire threatening two large fuel tanks located directly next to the building. It was determined that all personnel who had been in the building were accounted for and due to limited water (only that carried on the engines as there are very few fire hydrants in the area) efforts went directly to protecting the large propane tank and vehicle fuel tank. At some point in time in the fire, residents in the area reported hearing a large explosions and firefighters found that was the result of other tanks (propane, Argon and oxygen) being in the building at the time of the fire.

Fire investigators determined that the cause of the fire was the result of personnel trying to remove a fuel tank from a vehicle up on jacks. When the vehicle slipped partially off of the jacks, it caused the fuel tank to spill gasoline on the floor. That gasoline came into contact with an incandescent work light and immediately caused a flash fire. Workers were able to exit the building with only the arm of one of the workers being cindged by the fire.

There were no other injuries to workers or firefighters during this incident. Damage to the maintenance building, two vehicles and a horse trailer in the building at the time of the fire plus all of the associated maintenance equipment and tools associated with a maintenance facility is estimated to be $120,000. Mountain View Fire received assistance in fighting this fire from Boulder Rural Fire, Hygiene Fire and Rocky Mountain Fire in addition to assistance from the Boulder County Sheriff’s Department.

Later that evening at 9:55 PM, firefighters were called back to the building to extinguish smoldering debris in a corner of the building where a second story had been located and debris from that area rekindled. Firefighters worked another 60 minutes to repeat salvage and overhaul efforts to extinguish any remaining fire.

Firestone resident, Sierra Morganti, a 22-year-old, Frederick High School graduate was accepted to participate in the World Race in July 2013. This is an 11 month 11 country mission trip. She will be going to Ireland, Ukraine, Romania, Nepal, India, Mozambique, Swaziland, South Africa, Thailand Cambodia, and Taiwan. During the World Race she will be building churches, ministering to prisoners, teaching English, loving on orphans, and helping out where ever they are needed. In order for her to go she needs to raise $15,500

After an extensive interviewing process on Christian beliefs, stamina and passion, 80 World Racers from the US and Canada are chosen per route. Each route states which countries racers will be attending within the next year and when the mandatory 1-week training camp in Georgia will occur.

Within world race routes, World Racers are required to leave their families and dedicate their lives to the Lord. Each racer will live out of a backpack, sleep in tents or church floors, and completely rely on donations for support.

Contingencies in Real Estate Contracts

Contingencies are an integral and necessary part of today's real estate contracts. Contingencies are clauses that allow for unknown future events to be addressed at the time the contract is written.

Standard contract have several contingencies built in that are typical for most transactions. Loan approval is very common. This usually states that the contract is subject to the Buyer getting the loan necessary to complete the purchase and if not, that the Buyer would get their earnest money back.

The property inspection is another major contingency in the sales contract. This allows for disclosure by the Seller of any known adverse conditions and then gives the Buyer a chance to do whatever inspection the Buyer wants. The Buyer is responsible for the cost of the inspections and liable for any damages that are done to the property. After the inspection, the Buyer has the right to give the Seller notice of any unsatisfactory conditions. If the Buyer and Seller cannot come to a resolution of the problems, the Buyer may terminate the contract.

Other common contingencies are title review (making sure the Buyer is getting clear title to the property), an appraisal contingency (making sure the property appraises for at least the sales price) and an insurance contingency (to make sure that the buyer can get acceptable property insurance).

Another contingency might be for the sale of another home if the Buyer must sell another property prior to buying this one. Often

times a person has to sell their current house before they can purchase the next one. The further along in the sale of the present house the person is, the more likely the seller on the property he is buying may be willing to accept a sales contingency.

It is fairly rare that a seller would be willing to have aq sale contingency for a house that is not yet under contract, or even on the market. With bank owned properties, or repossessed homes, the sellers usually do not consider contingencies on the sale of another property.

In any contract, a balance between the parties must be reached. A Seller is unlikely to accept a contract with unreasonable contingencies, just as a Buyer probably would not commit to a contract without any protection.

Regardless of what contingencies or clauses there are in the contract, the most important thing is to make sure you understand everything. As questions of your Realtor, or get legal advice if you desire. In any case, do not sign until you completely understand what you are agreeing to.

The Dangers of Drinking Diet Soda

It has long been thought that drinking diet soda was better than drinking sugary soda.

Many people order diet soda in hopes to save calories. There is a misconception that diet soda is somehow â&#x20AC;&#x153;healthierâ&#x20AC;? than sugary soda. Many low carb, low fat, calorie based diets encourage the use of diet soda or other diet soft drinks to save on calories.

The fact of the matter is, diet soda is hazardous to your health! Most people know that soda in general decreases bone density by leaching the phosphorus and calcium out of bone.

It can also increase acidity in the stomach causing ulcers and digestive upset.

The following is a list of dangers linked to drinking diet sodas: â&#x20AC;˘ Most diet soda contains preservatives that are used for mold inhibition. They are the chemicals called sodium benzoate and potassium benzoate. These chemicals have the ability to cause severe damage to DNA in the mitochondria in the cell to the point that they totally inactivate it causing a complete failure. The preservative has also been linked to hives, asthma, and other allergic conditions. Both sodium and potassium benzoate were classified by the Food Commission in the UK as mild irritants to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes. Sugary soda has its faults, but it does not contain these harmful preservatives. â&#x20AC;˘ Here's something you didn't know about your diet soda: It might be bad for your kidneys. Diet soda has been proven to decrease kidney function in individuals who drink at least two sodas per day by two-fold. â&#x20AC;˘ Diet soda is most likely responsible for a substantial increase in waist size and causes most people to gain weight rather than lose weight. Artificial sweeteners can disrupt the body's natural ability to regulate calorie intake based on the sweetness of foods. This means people who consume diet foods might be more likely to overeat, because your body is being tricked into thinking it's eating sugar, and you crave more sweets. â&#x20AC;˘ Just one diet soda a day is linked to a 34% higher risk of metabolic syndrome. (i.e. the group of symptoms including belly fat and high cholesterol that puts you at risk for heart disease.) â&#x20AC;˘ Diet soda is very acidic at a level of 3.2. (As a point of reference, the pH of battery acid is 1. Water is 7.) The acid is what readily dissolves tooth enamel. People who drink soda are far more likely to have dental decay and gum disease. â&#x20AC;˘ Most soda cans are lined with a dangerous substance called BPA. BPA is responsible for immune and endocrine dysfunction. It has been banned in baby bottles and most water bottles, but continues to be used in lining soda cans.

Drinking water is always the best choice. The best way to protect yourself and your family is to clean up your nutrition and educate yourself as to what you are putting in your body. There are probably many various ways to define worship? Everyone has various ideas what worship may be or what worship entails. Many people when thinking of worship probably think of music and singing. Some people however may equate other things with worship like praise bands, church, communion, and fellowship. In today's Christian society there are many various churches that have various methods of worship. So can all be right? Does God have a certain standard for people to truly worship Him? We must understand that TRUE Worship is totally for Christ and towards Christ. It is not for personal fulfillment, entertainment, or excitement. It solely to glorify God, to life Him up. It is not to be centered around any one person, praise band, or group.

Some time ago, I was listening to the Christian radio and a song came on. The disturbing part was not what the people were singing or how they were singing. The disturbing part was that the crowd was cheering, screaming, whistling, and clapping as the group/praise band/band was being introduced to the stage. At first I thought I was listening to the beginning of a secular rock concert like what you may see at the beginning of Beatles or even a Justin Beiber concert. It was quite clear that the audience was there to â&#x20AC;&#x153;worshipâ&#x20AC;? or â&#x20AC;&#x153;adoreâ&#x20AC;? the singers and not there to worship God. Unfortunately this same mindset has sunk into the church.

Let us look at several stories from Scripture in regards to how God had certain standards and how God had certain standards specifically in worship! The first story we will look at is in 2 Samuel 6. God had given the Israelites very specific commands on how they were to take care of and treat the Ark of the Covenant.

Some of those commands even included how to transport the Ark. They were not allowed to carry it by cart. They were only allowed to carry it by the poles on the side of the Ark. In 2 Samuel 6 we see that Uzzah disobeyed God and had a clear punishment for it! When the Ark was on the cart, the cart began to shake and the Ark began to fall. As soon as it did, Uzzah touched it and died instantly.

In Genesis 4 Cain and Abel were given specific instructions on what true worship is and how to perform a sacrifice. Cain decided to do what was convenient for him. He did what fulfilled his desires rather that God's commands. He decided to give of his fruits and vegetables rather than a blood sacrifice as God had specifically commanded. This sacrifice was a symbol of God's great gift and sacrifice. This was a story that God wanted for us to see in regards that He has specific commands when it comes to true worship. Because of Cain's disobedience he was angry towards God and killed his brother Abel. God cursed Cain and gave him a great punishment.

Lastly we will look at a story of worship of Abraham and his son Isaac. In Genesis 22, we see that God wanted to sacrifice his son. God told him to take him to the top of the mount and offer him up there. We see that Abraham must have wanted to truly worship God. Why? We see in Scripture that Abraham rose up EARLY in the morning. He did not wait until the last moment, but did it with haste. This was super important, because through his son Isaac God promised a multitude of children. He understood the importance of worshiping God and the importance of obedience. Because of Abraham's obedience God greatly blessed Abraham and allowed him to spare his son.

So why do you â&#x20AC;&#x153;worshipâ&#x20AC;? God the way that you do? Is God the center of your attention, or are you fulfilling your own desires and lusts. Are you seeking entertainment with a performance or a group of people or a band? God must be the center of our worship.

God has certain expectations for how we ought to worship Him, and it must ALL be centered around Christ.

Introducing the Indian Peaks Medical Ctr.

A wide range of medical services will soon be available in the Tri-Town area. The location of this new medical center is along Highway 52 just east of I-25. Indian Peaks Medical Center is a service of Longmont United Hospital and will open in late 2013. The facility will offer essential services such as Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Services & OB-GYN, Cardiology, Sports Medicine & Orthopedics and Imaging Services. All of this will be offered at a single location with the convenience of extended hours, online scheduling and walk-in appointments.

The medical center was named after the Indian Peaks mountain range prominently viewed from the location. A public naming contest was held and the name was chosen among 260 applications. The building will be approximately 36,000 square feet with medical office space on the second floor. The project is Phase 1 of a four phase master plan culminating in an acute care hospital and medical campus. Earthwork and site development will start in January with building construction beginning in April. H+L Architecture is the architectural firm and the general contractor is Fransen Pittman.

Let’s keep that awful flu from getting us...

...or from striking again! There are several Chinese medical techniques that have been scientifically proven to increase the white blood cell count, and thereby coax your system to effectively fight illness. Here are three of my absolute favorite techniques that do not involve inserting an acupuncture needle: Cupping: placement of suction cups on the back assists in moving blood, improve Lung function, and move toxins out of the system. This method is safe for infants, children and adults.

Sesshokushen: there’s no other word for this, so let me briefly explain! With one acupuncture needle, the practitioner quickly taps all over the skin of the upper back and behind the Lungs. This Japanese technique stimulates the production of white blood cells, and also assists in moving toxins out of the system. This method is also safe for infants, children and adults.

Moxibustion: some people are familiar with this from experience, or from seeing it done in a movie. ‘Moxa’ is the shortened term for this procedure of placing a very light and fluffy herb at specific points on the body, then lighting it with an incense stick. It is taken off when the person feels that it is hot, as this is not for burning the skin. In some cases, the herb is placed on the end of the needle. However, in order to obtain an immune response, it is necessary to burn this herb directly on the skin.

Before and after research has proved an increase in the white blood cell count only when performing moxibustion directly on the skin. This is safe for adults of any age.

Unless a child is very very weak, moxibustion is never for children.

When a person comes into the office reporting that they “feel like they’re going to get a cold” then I do all three of these techniques. If caught in the very early stages of illness, it is most likely that this person escapes the cold. If the person comes in the throes of a respiratory illness, these techniques and acupuncture, will assist their system into fighting it off more vigorously, and prevent it from progressing more deeply. Every winter, there are those who get the same cold repeatedly. In this case, I suggest a few acupuncture treatments, and also recommend individual-specific food, herbal medicine or essential oils, in order to help get their immune system strong again.

I’d like to begin with a topic that is fundamental to our practice and has enormous relevance to the optimal health of most individuals, and yet is so often neglected. It is the concept of “functional testing”. When a doctor runs a test, he or she interprets the result based upon something called the “reference range”. This is the range provided by the lab which is considered “within normal limits”. If the result of someone’s blood test falls below this range, it is considered to be too low, and if it is above it, the result is considered to be too high.

The problem is however that many tests have extremely wide reference ranges.

For example a thyroid test called the TSH is considered “normal” as long as it falls between 0.45 and 4.5, which is a ten-fold range of value. The reference range for testosterone in men is 300-1200. Often, little additional insight is given to account for whether the patient is 20 years old or 70. Clearly, a level of 301 is not the same as 1199, and yet most of us physicians are trained to think that it in fact is the same.

A related issue arose in the latest edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), a highly respected medical journal. An international study evaluated the benefit of treating vitamin D deficiency in order to help with joint pain.

The reference range for vitamin D is 35-100. The average patient in the study started with a level of about 20, which is severely deficient. The researchers concluded that vitamin D replacement does not help joint pain at all. But when you look closely at their methods you will find that the levels that they reached after treatment was an average of 38--which is just barely above the deficiency range! In our practice we strive to get patients to a vitamin D level of around 90, and in a large number of cases they feel significantly better. The same concept applies to all other tests as well. Whenever you review your results with your doctor, make sure to ask not whether you labs are simply “normal”, but rather “optimal” for you. Good health to you in 2012!

Students in the middle school advanced Independent Study class were given an assignment each quarter to decide upon a topic to research and then present to the class. This class has been designed for the students that have proven to be highly successful students that are capable and willing to work independently.

Each quarter students have had periodic check in dates with the teacher so that the projects are kept on track.

The independent study has been a venue for students to research an area of interest and to enlighten other students to other interests. Students in this class shined and the research as well as the presentations were exemplary.

Teachers at Carbon Valley Academy look for and plan ways to reach all of our level of students and this class has been a very successful way to reach our higher level students.

Many, many patrons are renewing their memberships for the year and taking advantage of the Rec Buc program.
