 Here we are in the new year and already January has flown by. As I write this article the temperature today is a pleasant 50 degrees. Just so we don’t get lulled into a false sense of an early Spring we must remember that historically March and April can be the months with the most snow falls. A couple of points of interest and concern along those lines. The Mead Public Works Department has reported that during the early January snow storm they plowed some 771 miles of town roads which took them collectively 14 hours. I am sure you understand that arterial and collector roads do get plowed first and then we work on those within the developments. I am also sure that you have noticed that we do have a treasured senior citizen population and they have a great deal of difficulty clearing their driveways and walks. It would be wonderful if some volunteers would step up and assist them.  Yes, the town hall renovation is coming along and there will be a second story for the town offices. I think I have mentioned that our town manager, Dan Dean, and I meet with the contractor on a regular basis and the full Town Board receives a monthly update. Along the lines of construction, your Town Board approved the expenditure of funds for engineering work for a trail going south from Welker Avenue to Adams Avenue. It is anticipated that construction will take place later this year on the trail. This hopefully will get the children safely off the road bed of Third Street.  Calendars are important and you should note that we do have an important election taking place on April 1 (ironically on my calendar it also shows up as ‘April Fools’ day). This election will be for three town trustees positions and the mayor’s . It will also feature a referendum request to give the town relief from one of the troublesome Tabor restrictions and I can assure you that I will be voting for it and I would urge that you to do the same. This election in terms of process has a couple of new twists thanks to a little noticed piece of legislation that the state passed last year. If you had a permanent request for an absentee ballot in the past, you will have to request a new one this year. Also, while we normally would have a mail ballot for this type of an election, we will still have mail in ballots (if you request one in writing) but we will also have a walk-in polling place on April 1 (convenient location is still being arranged). We will post more information on this as we get closer to the election date.  Volunteers for advisory committees are a vital backbone of our community. They assist the Town Board with decisions and run numerous events such as the Easter egg hunt, fishing derby, Christmas celebration, Mead community day and many more. Thankfully we have some great people that have lent us their unique talents. I would like to welcome Jared McFarland to the Parks and Recreation Committee and the reappointments of Tina-Marie Zalesky and Joyce Palazewski. We have reappointed Terri Hatch to the Downtown Revitalization Committee and Robert Acker to the Open Space committee. There are still some openings on some of our volunteer committees and if you would like to contribute to the future of the Town of Mead, just let us know. All of these volunteer committee meetings are open to the public so if you wish to get an idea as to what they are working on please stop by one of their meetings.  If you have any ideas on how we can bring improvement to our great town please let either me or one of your town Trustees know. I always return phone calls and emails. You are always welcome to come to one of our semi-monthly meetings to express your thoughts and to see what your local government does for you. Stay safe as we continue in these Winter months and be cautious of children that may think the streets are a great place to do sledding. Please keep in your prayers the men and women that are protecting our freedoms. By the time this is published I am confident that the Broncos will have won the Super Bowl, so go Broncos ! Semper Fi!

Letter to the Editor:

I am concerned about the oil and natural gas wells around Mead. I am wondering --why do we need oil and natural gas trucks driving around? They could damage with the roads with their trucks. Do you think people should drive their oil trucks within town limits? I am concerned about the trucks' excessive speeds while making wide turns on the road. I am also concerned about excessive mud on the roads, which can cause damage to the roads and cause accidents. I would like to see more people follow the rules of safe driving while in their trucks. My hope is that people will slow down when making wide turns if they must drive within town limits. Chandler Cannell, Mead

advocate and rescuer, the goal is to help pet’s live long lives without fear of predators attacking them in their own yards, or the risk of jumping out of their yard to be endangered by passing vehicles or ending up in a shelter. Coyote Rollers are a patented ribbed aluminum roller that mounts to the top of a fence. They spin with only 2 ounces of pressure, making it difficult for animals to gain the ‘foothold’ they need to pull themselves up and over the top of an enclosure. They mount on fencing made of wood, vinyl, chain link, iron and mason. They are easy to install by a handyman or homeowner. The many benefits also include: • Protect livestock • Protect Chicken coops • Keep squirrels off - reduce barking • May work to keep Cats in yards • HOA friendly • Available in over 20 colors to match fences • No maintenance required • No power source needed •

Trish Whitley's, locally owned, Colorado Coyote Rollers will be featured at the upcoming Colorado Garden and Home show, Feb 15-23. Due to the alarming incidence of animals being attacked and killed by Coyotes in the metro area, Colorado Coyote Rollers is proud to offer Coyote Rollers that can go a long way in preventing attacks of beloved family pets. In fact, Trish may be working with the Westminster Police and CO Division of Wildlife regarding the many pet casualties they’ve had recently. Also 9News did a segment on them recently. Trish said, “It was very fun to be ‘behind the scenes’ there.” Colorado Coyote Rollers, a small business out of Northern Colorado, Colorado Coyote Rollers (a division of Tribblez) will help to save dogs lives by keeping them IN their yards and Coyotes OUT. Speed, Seat Belts and Impaired Driving Cause Most Fatalities on Colorado Roads

In 2012, the total number of motor vehicle fatalities in Colorado increased for the first time in six years after a steady decline. Speed-related fatalities, fatalities with a driver impaired by alcohol, and unbuckled occupant vehicles fatalities accounted for the three largest proportions of motor vehicle deaths in Colorado. Of 472 motor vehicle deaths in 2012, 162 (34%) were speed-related and an estimated 133 (28%) involved a driver impaired by alcohol. Of major concern is that of the 287 passenger vehicle fatalities, 156 (54%) were unbuckled. To combat these and other traffic safety issues, the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) Office of Transportation Safety offers grant funds through the Moving Ahead for Progress in the 21st Century Act (MAP-21) to agencies, organizations and tribal governments within the State of Colorado that provide programs, projects, services and strategies that are intended to reduce the number of deaths and serious injuries resulting from traffic crashes on Colorado roadways. “Focusing prevention efforts related to speed, impaired driving and seat belt use provide the greatest opportunity to impact the total number of fatalities on Colorado roadways,” said Darrell Lingk, Director of the Office of Transportation Safety at CDOT. “But there are many other traffic safety issues that also need attention, such as pedestrian safety and impaired driving involving marijuana. It’s through our local communities that we move the needle in terms of decreasing motor vehicle fatalities and serious injury crashes.” The total projected funding available is $3.5 million and the average award amount typically ranges from $50,000-$75,000 The Request For Application (RFA) process kicks off during a webinar on Monday, Feb. 3 from 1:00-3:00 p.m., which covers the 2014 Problem Identification Report and the FY15 grant funding process. Applications are due to CDOT on April 1 by 3:00 p.m. The RFA, application and other data sources will be available at http://www.coloradodot.info/ business/grants/safetygrants as of Feb. 3.
