Creating Community By Connecting Neighbors "Look to the Lord and his strength; seek his face always." Ps 105:4
William Bixler...
Wow! A new year is on the horizon as we start 2014! It is hard to believe that another year has passed and we are faced with new goals and opportunities. Last year (2013), tragedy struck in a huge way as we learned that there were some students who felt the need to take their lives. This can be devastating as it dashes the dreams of families, schools and friends. What do we do as a community? We pray, we try to encourage, we listen, we cry and we… you fill in the blank. It is hard to know exactly what to do afterward, but as we look to our new year I believe one thing every student can commit to is to take a stance against making fun of others around you. It is interesting to find the character Ishmael, in the Bible, making fun of Isaac, his younger stepbrother. In Genesis 21: 9 it says, “But Sarah saw Ishmael—the son of Abraham and her Egyptian servant Hagar—making fun of Isaac.” Who would have guessed that Abraham had a bully as a son and a son that was bullied! This continues to be a problem in our world today. Choose to make a difference. If you hear about someone making fun of someone else, speak out against it, grab a trusted friend or teacher and don’t let it continue. There is no winning for anyone if we allow, “making fun of others” to continue. If words and actions can turn other’s hearts away from depression, seclusion, deception and defeat, may it be so! No one wants to have any student shorten his or her life in 2014. Although we can’t always pinpoint bullying with suicide, we can determine that it can bring others down. In future articles, I want to highlight students that are using their God-given talents and abilities to make a difference in other’s lives.

Have You Met Your Guardian Angel(s)?
How many of us get the chance to meet our “Guardian Angel” on earth? Many of us think angels exist only in heaven. I don’t believe that is always the case. I think God sometimes allows us to meet our guardian angels on earth too. I happen to be one of the lucky ones. I have two guardian angels and, yes, I have met them both. Some people may have men while others females. I am lucky that I have a female and a male “Guardian Angel.” My guardian angels have protected me in so many ways I cannot begin to list all of them. I didn’t realize I had “Guardian Angels” until this year. As I reflect back over the last twenty years, I realize how my angles have been there for me in many ways. My “Guardian Angels” have literally been there for me. It doesn’t matter the time of day or night, sometimes just to listen to me. They have been in my life through the bad and the good. Although I haven’t realized it until now, they are truly my “Guardian Angels”. To me, a Guardian Angel guides, listens, nurtures, and even is an intercessor of God. At times, a Guardian Angels presence is very evident and bold. Other times, their presence is quite unknown. They silently protect me by going to God for me, prayerfully holding me up when I couldn’t do it for myself. My “Guardian Angels” have been very busy for me…just for me. My female “Guardian Angel” can quote scripture to back up her words or share God’s words to help me get me through a situation or issue. I can talk for hours with either of them about the past or present issues and I am never judged. I can laugh or cry with them. They are always light hearted and always bring me straight back to God in a non-judgmental way while remaining both loving and caring. They gently cover me with their “wings” and care for me spiritually and compassionately. I am one of the lucky ones; I actually know my “Guardian Angels.” One is my husband. I hope that each one of my family members can someday meet their own Guardian Angel while still in their human form. To know

your personal Guardian Angel is an amazing experience, so caring and loving; just what God has ordered for each of us. I hope this year brings me closer to God. With the help of my guardian angels, I know I will continue to learn about God’s grace and love. I would like to say thank you to my “Guardian Angels” for the love and commitment to me, your soft caring ways, your loving wings that are always around me for protection, and your guiding ways to God. I would like to live this year in the following way: Psalm 119:10 I seek you with all my heart; do not let my stray from your commands. I challenge each of you to strive to live this way. You may or may not know your “Guardian Angel(s)” but for sure he/she can help you with this challenge. Pray to God for help and you will receive it. Stop and listen to God and you will be guided to live His way. Your “Guardian Angel” may or may not be known by you but be sure he/ she is with you and is always a step in front of you and only a breath away. Thank God for yours whether or not you know him or her. I hope these words from Psalms 63: 1-5 will help you all live a richer life in 2014 knowing you always have your “Guardian Angel” one step in front of you. You, God, are my God, earnestly I seek you; I thirst for you, my whole being longs for you, in a dry and parched land where there is no water. I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and glory. Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you. I will praise you as long as I live, and in your name I will lift up my hands. I will be fully satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. I love you Brad and Kelly and thank you for your love, wisdom, and those warm wings that both of you wrap around me so often. Robin Barrett

zz A belated Happy New Year to everyone. While last year brought the area fires and floods, let’s hope that 2014 will not experience any of that kind of natural disasters. A colleague that I respect has told me that each day now brings us one more minute of daylight so things are improving. December was a busy month and appeared to fly by quickly. I hope you enjoyed the Mead Christmas celebration even though the weather was a bit chilly. For those hardy souls that did participate, you will recall that we served 140 meals of chili or soup that evening, we had a tremendous parade, tree lighting along with Santa and a great bon fire. I personally want to thank all that helped to make this another great Mead signature event. zz During December the town board adopted both a budget for 2014 as well as a transportation plan. In terms of budget I can tell you that the town does have a rainy day fund that gives us the capability to respond to unanticipated situations that Mother Nature may throw at us. There will also be a temporary mill levy reduction of 0.285 mills (2.5%) for this year. Your town board is very cognizant of your tax dollars and spends them frugally. The transportation plan gives us the capability to focus on changes to our infrastructure that will be necessary over the next few years to prevent congestion and delays as you travel within Mead. This is necessary as we have two new residential subdivisions that have submitted preliminary plans for review and plan to start construction this year. Obviously the developers have found out that people believe that Mead is the best place on the front range to live, work, play and raise a family. zz We have many opportunities for you to participate in the future of your community. I want to thank Scott Gilbert as one of our neighbors for volunteering to join the town’s Investment Advisory Committee. We welcome his knowledge and background. There are still opportunities for several of our standing committees such as downtown revitalization, open space, planning, and parks and recreation. zz I must give thanks to two organizations. First, thanks to the Mountain View Fire Protection District. These are the men and women that provide both fire and rescue services to us. They have also received a reduced Insurance Service rating from a 4/9 to a 3/9. What that means to you is that you may be able to enjoy lower insurance premiums and of course better service from the fire district. There are only two fire districts in all of Northern Colorado that have earned this 3/9 rating. The second organization I must give thanks to is the town’s Public Works department. These are the behind the scenes men that come into work in the middle of the night, on roads that have not been snow plowed, so they can clear the streets for us and keep us safe. If you meet any members of these two organizations, please give them your personal thanks. zz What would a town be like if it didn’t have construction that is designed to improve where we live. The first one is the town hall renovation. You may have noticed that the steel work is going up, elevator ordered, framing taking place and many other necessary structural items necessary to put the outside sheeting on the building, and then the interior. Second, we are also working with our electric utility to install new street lighting on the east side of Main Street now that the old red barn is gone. This lighting will not be at taxpayer expense. Third, by now the construction on the sidewalk from First Street to Third Street along Welker Avenue should be underway and finished shortly. zz A number of you have found that you can communicate with me either by email or telephone (or in person at the grocery store). I welcome those conversations to learn what is on your mind and to listen to your input on how to make our town better. If you care to have coffee so we can discuss your concerns, I am open for that also as long as it is at one of our fine Mead eating establishments. If you care to, please also communicate with your other elected town representatives, namely the Board of Trustees. You are also welcome to come to our semi-monthly Board meetings and voice any ideas you may have. zz Please drive safely during this winter weather and watch out for children that may be sledding in the roads. Also, please keep in your prayers the men and women protecting our freedom no matter where in the world they may be stationed. Semper Fi !

One individual student who takes a stand against this kind of activity is William Bixler. Now a senior at Mead High School, William has tried to be one who encourages other students with his actions and words. It is not always easy to take a stand for what is right. William was a part of a student tour in which he played a part in a drama called “Everything.” In this drama, the character that played Jesus stood in and took the beating that the other character was receiving by others in the drama. It was hard to watch, but it portrayed a truth that when you stand up for Jesus, He is standing for you. He calls us to take a stand for this kind of righteousness! You may be made fun of in living this kind of lifestyle. But is it worth it to bring about that kind of change to better our community? How can you be that kind of change-agent? We all need encouragement. Let’s make our community a place where encouraging one another is not taken for granted nor set on the shelf. To learn from a great hero of our modern media—Kid President, “If you can’t say anything nice, then you aren’t thinking hard enough.” Be encouraged!
