Living Space You'll Be Proud of: Indoor or Outdoor
by Kelly Martindale Spring and summer are generally months to accomplish household renovations, inside and out. The Carbon Valley has a great variety of businesses specializing in various aspects of construction, renovation, landscaping, and custom decorating. I’ve utilized the services and/or worked with the following on many occasions and wanted to encourage you to consider achieving your goals with the help of these local business owners. These craftsmen have completed simple remodel projects to those in multi-million dollar homes and are dedicated to making sure you are delighted when they are finished. Copperleaf Custom Builders: Jim Lohr, along with his partners, do projects from creating magnificent homes to refacing
fireplaces like mine. They renovate whole kitchens or finish basements. You dream it, they complete it. 970.535.4256 Jayhawk Tile: Scott Zurfluh specializes in custom tile work for all rooms including entry ways and wine rooms. From my kitchen/bath/laundry floors to intricate patterns that include individually cut grapes, leaves and vines, Scott has a unique talent to create your vision with precision and artistry. 303.818.7081
Firestone Residents Presented with Awards for Father’s Service
Firestone Police Chief David Montgomery had the honor to present awards and medals to Firestone residents on June 13, 2012, on behalf of the United States Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton. The awards were presented to Savannah and Madison Mendenhall, daughters of Gardner and Nicole Mendenhall of Firestone. As a symbol of gratitude, Rodham Clinton presented these girls with the awards. The awards read: “In appreciation for the sacrifice asked of you while separated from your father during his unaccompanied tour of duty, this Certificate and accompanying Medal of Recognition are offered as a symbol of the Department of State’s gratitude. Just as we are proud of the men and women serving in Unaccompanied Posts, we are also proud of their families. Thank you for sharing your father.
Blue Parrot Painting: Tim Zaerr has provided custom painting services to famous homeowners from Vail to Carbon Valley residents like me. He is a master at straight lines and an artisan with faux finishes. He is meticulous and creative and projects for me have included painting inside and out, building a floor to ceiling bookcase and a window seat. 303.678.8442 L & L: Louise Kelley & Lynda Gould create outdoor living spaces that rival the nicest family rooms (they do family rooms too). But how nice to entertain with a built in barbecue or recline by a fire pit or water feature‌L & L can create a sanctuary of peace for you and your family. They listened to what I envisioned and are helping me design a space that works for me utilizing most of what I already have. 303.549.3673 Yes, Dear: Richard Hoffarth continues to provide quality work where ever you need it; from remodels to the “honey-do list.â€? I’ve utilized Richard’s help to finish projects I shouldn’t have started in the first place. He is efficient, precise and affordable. 720.480.7352 Each of these business owners strive to exceed your expectations and from my own experience, that has happened. I was overwhelmed by the finished projects. They each do free estimates so don’t hesitate to invite them over to hear about the work you’d like done. They all are independent business owners and reside in the circulation areas of the Carbon Valley Consumer Report. I guarantee you will be more than satisfied if you hire any one of them. They work hard to earn your business and they spend what they earn in our communities. Please support your local business owners!

What’s On My Mind
Planning is bringing the future into the present so that you can do something about it now. — Alan Lakein
Kelly Martindale, Publisher
Blazing Questions I just want to cry‌the fires have changed the lives of so many people and taken the life of one woman‌my son’s birthday is Sunday and he would have been 34 years old‌I’m trying to get healthy and have been exercising and eating right but it doesn’t seem to help me feel better emotionally. Too much heaviness right now. Do the trials of life ever end? Best case scenario; yes, they end and we all live happily ever after. But what if the hardships don’t end? What if one negative thing happens after another? One friend comes to my mind immediately; she’s had moments of goodness amidst hours of adversity, year after year. But she keeps getting up in the morning, she keeps her family intact and she continues to care for her clients as if they were the most important people in the world. Will her trials ever end? Will your trials ever end? Will my trials ever end? Again, what if they don’t? If you knew it was always going to be like this, what changes would you make? For the last 22 years, I’ve moved through the motions. I’ve survived; sometimes barely, sometimes abundantly. In the last two years, however, I’ve worked pretty hard and diligently to look my life in the face and accept it for what it is. It’s not pretty. From my earliest memories until they divorced, my parents fought violently with one another. I was a mom at 17, had four children— two died, had 3 marriages—two divorces, watched my kids struggle with relationships, eating disorders, educational issues and deaths of two siblings. I’ve had money problems, physical and spiritual health issues, marital struggles, and business complications. My life is not pretty and in fact, it’s hardly ever fun or fulfilling. Most of us ask ourselves, is this all there is to life? The questions nag you‌why did this have to happen? After my nine-year-old daughter, Alisha, died, I remained faithful to the goodness of God and believed that He would take this terrible tragedy and make something beautiful out of it. I continued to tell my children and others that while I did not understand why, I knew with
every part of my being that there was a reason and someday we would know that reason. Then, in 2002 when my son, Jason died—I could not keep saying the same thing. To be honest, I had a little doubt in my heart about how God was going to “pull this one off. It was so devastating and huge and inexplicable that I started to wonder, “Is my God big enough for this? Little by little, that question chipped away at my faith and I stopped trying to encourage my kids to believe. We still prayed and we still talked about the Lord but my lack of faith showed. I can tell, because I know how my kids struggle today. My lack of faith smothered their faith. One of my deepest regrets to this day. Then I look at a photo of a neighborhood burned near Colorado Springs and see one house burned to the ground surrounded by unburned homes and I wonder, how and why did only that one house burn. How did the others not catch fire? It makes no sense. And it wasn’t but a few months ago families were devastated by tornados and again, why does the tornado destroy all but one home in a neighborhood or how does a baby survive stuck in the fold of a mattress shoved into the branches of a tree? Why do these things happen? How are you supposed to believe in a god who is supposed to have all this “power and yet this god allows so many horrific things to happen? When we think like that, I think we are visualizing a god—any god—who is like a genie in a bottle. We cry out to that god and expect—poof—the rain pours down and snuffs out the fire. Poof! The car drives through my daughter like she’s a vapor and it misses her completely. Poof! The wind stops. The tornado disappears. Stuff happens. Beetles kill trees leaving them ravaged and dry. Spring storms bring lightening. When the two meet, fire happens. A girl rides her bike on the road. A new and inexperienced driver decides to pass another vehicle. That decision killed Alisha, accidentally. So what do we do with that? Like my friend, we get up every day. We do the things that
need to be done. We feed the kids, we get to work, we take out the trash, we water the lawn, and we go to bed. And we do that every day until it gets a little easier and we start to notice beauty again. Eventually, a blessing happens. I get an email from a reader of the Consumer Report who shares with me that what I wrote helped them in ways I’d never imagined. My whole perspective changed and I knew I was doing exactly what I am supposed to be doing. God used the reader to affirm to me that I had listened to Him. And life is good when you know God uses you to help another soul. Life is good when you understand you have a purpose for being on this earth. I can honestly tell you; I had never written anything for anybody else to read until after the death of my daughter. The realization that I had survived the death of one of my children gave me the courage to try to help others through articles in magazines and now through my column in my paper, The Carbon Valley Consumer Report. Would I give it all back to have my kids with me‌without a doubt. But since that cannot happen, I am grateful that God is making good things out of my tragedies. Right this minute, nobody can see any good out of losing absolutely everything from these fires. But in a couple weeks, a piece of green grass, a fall wild flower, a baby aspen, will shoot up from the black ash. That tiny bit of color will give hope to the new life that follows. It will be a different life, to be sure. And everybody will be searching for their own, new normal. But I assure you, it will come. Beauty will come out of the ashes. That is a promise.

With a Little Help From My Friends Part II
Last month I shared with you that I needed help to get fit and that I was working out with Tracy Rewerts, CPT and owner of Time For Change Personal Training. I also said I would keep you updated on my progress. So here it is: In two months time, I’ve worked out with Tracy twelve times. I’ve continued to walk on the elliptical and even went to the CV Rec Center two times and lifted weights. So while the photos don’t show extreme change, I can say I have improved posture, feel better and I feel stronger than I have in years. I’ve only lost 3.5 pounds so far but I’ve lost 1 inch off my hips, 1.5 inches off my waist, ½ inch off my chest, ½ inch off my arms, and ½ inch off my thighs. My pants are too big, yahoo! And, if I lose three more pounds I’ll officially be in the healthy weight range for my size, according to the body mass index scale. All my muscles, especially my thighs and biceps, are firm and strong. My cellulite is finally less obvious and I even wore shorts (but my legs are waaay too white). I’m pretty surprised at myself because I even joined Tracy at her fitness group boot camp in the park, early in the morning! I would not have done this without Tracy's ongoing encouragement when we are together and through texts and emails. She's not a drill sergeant nor a push-over but seems in tune to my daily abilities and pushes me enough to get to the next level. I'm grateful to be working with her. I'm happy to report that I’ve been answering my door no matter what I look like and I even grocery shopped without makeup. So, whoever is praying, please don’t stop! You all are a part of my success. Thank you!

Bird Watchers of the Tri-Town Area Beware!
Starting July 4, 2012 you may start thinking all your birding field manuals and reference books are oddly out of whack. They're not. And if it makes you feel any better, you're not seeing things either. Those flocks of flamingos that you will undoubtedly start seeing around town are actually part of a Yard Flamingo Fund-Raiser campaign by the Frederick High School Cheerleaders. The cheerleaders will be planting flocks of plastic pink flamingos into the front yards of unsuspecting local residents. They will also be leaving a note with the gaudy birds telling you who sent the flock to your lawn and how you can send it you someone else. For the truly flamingo-phobic residents we will be offering flamingo flocking insurance. To send the flock to someone's yard just pay the fee and away they will fly. The flocks will be picked up in 24 hours from your yard. So come on out to the parade on the 4th of July and see any cheerleader to order your flock and if you can't make the parade please email staciknepp@yahoo.com for more information. small flock of 10 $10.00 med flock of 20 $15.00 lg flock of 30 $20.00 supersize flock of 50 $30.00

Frederick Proclaims June 23 Frederick Firestone Fire District Day
Mayor Tony Carey will be present at FrederickFirestone Fire Protection District’s Community Safety Day Saturday June 23rd at FFFPD Station 1 (31 Walnut Dr., Frederick) to read a proclamation at 12:00 p.m. in support of FFFPD’s tireless effort to keep the community safe. “We want to thank Frederick-Firestone Fire for being such a first-class fire protection district,” said Mayor Carey. “We truly feel that we have the best service in the region and want to recognize their excellence and commitment to this community.” “The Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District has a proven, efficient, sustainable and community focused model of emergency service delivery designed and committed to meet the immediate and future needs of our citizens in Frederick and Firestone, “ said FFFPD Chief Ted Poszywak. “It is not about the ‘What’s in it for me’ mentality, it’s about ‘What can I do’, and our people hold that value at their core. We are both honored and humbled by this Proclamation by the Town of Frederick.” To see the Proclamation in its entirety see http://frederickco.gov/FrederickFirestoneFireDistrictDay.htm Top: Local residents learning about water safety. Area Mayor’s Report—For those of us who do not attend meetings
Special Olympics: Firestone recently hosted a softball Chad Auer tournament for special Olympics athletes. The event was held at the Firestone Sports complex and thanks to Kristi, Paul and many other volunteers - it was an enormous success. We look forward to next years tournament! We are expanding our Urban Renewal project in order to provide further access to this important tool for economic development and community improvements. For more information about the Firestone Urban Renewal Authority, visit the town website. I was recently appointed to the board of Upstate Colorado an economic development organization focused on expanding northern Colorado's economy. This is an enormous honor for me and I am excited to contribute to the future of our region in this capacity. Firestone continues to enjoy a strong, collaborative relationship with the Frederick Firestone Fire Protection District. Under the leadership of Chief Poszywak, the department continues to embody fiscal stewardship and professional delivery of service. Firestone unequivocally supports the FFFPD and I want to thank the department for their tremendous work. One of the key elements of a thriving Firestone is community recreation. Surveys have shown that Firestone residents value health and wellness at record levels. Not only is community recreation important to current residents, but it is an important factor in economic development. Further, a large number of Firestone residents have expressed a wide range of concerns about our current Recreation District. As your mayor, I am committed to providing the highest value of service for the tax dollars contributed by citizens. To that end, we are exploring all of our options moving forward. We continue to discuss options that range from the construction of a YMCA to forming our own recreation district. Everything is on the table as we seek to provide the absolute best value to our tax payers. Onorato Park continues to see major improvements. Take a moment to stop by and check out the fantastic additions to this wonderful part of our community. Movies in the Park continues to be a tremendous success. I was able to drop by Hart Park and visit with residents before taking in Mary Poppins. Be sure to check the town calendar for upcoming movies. I want to extend a special congratulations to one of the officers on the Police Department. Michelle Powers recently completed extensive training on animal cruelty investigations. She is now the only certified animal cruelty investigator in Weld County. Congratulations to Officer Powers! The 4th at Firestone continues to be one of the greatest marquee events in northern Colorado. I am very appreciative of all the volunteers, staff and community members who make the 4th of July an outstanding celebration right here in the heartland of America.
CHAD AUER, MAYOR OF FIRESTONE
At the beginning of June, the Mayor and Town Board of Trustees met for a retreat to identify a focus and direction for the Town as we move Tony Carey forward with a newly elected Mayor and Board of Trustees. During the retreat, we performed critical programming including a SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis and setting of priorities for the organization to move forward with in terms of completing meaningful projects to help the Town and the Community continue to succeed. The projects identified are the initial step in the development and preparation of the 2013 budget. Some of the more critical projects identified include the following: Emphasis in revitalization of the downtown An assertive push in the competitive field of economic development
Construction of a monument sign welcoming residents, business, and visitors to Frederick Exploration of a community/events center in the community Improvement to the I-25 and Highway 52 overpass and the interchange As part of these initiatives, the Town will focus on development of all types of partnerships, primarily focusing on public-private initiatives that ensure success for both parties. As we move forward, the Town will be improving and increasing efforts on our communication with citizens and businesses in the community. Being able to connect with all Frederick citizens and businesses is key to building strong, meaningful, and lasting relationships – something we felt was critical towards long-term success. Overall, the retreat was considered a success and the Town Board welcomes any and all feedback you may have on other ideas we can implement to continue with our progress to be the best community we can, together. We also invite you to attend the weekly farmers market every Thursday now until September 27th from 3 to 7 p.m. The Frederick Market takes place at the corner of 5th and Main Streets near Crist Park and continues to grow every week, especially with the harvest season beginning. Please come explore the great variety of food and crafts while supporting your local farmers and producers. We are also planning for our 10th Annual Miners Day Celebration September 15th. This year’s celebration will be bigger than ever and you can be a part of it! There is still time to get your application in for an exhibitor booth before the deadline August 1st or to be a part of the parade before September 1st.
have implemented some of the programs and what are the pitfalls to watch out for. Educational credits are given for attending these sessions and your Town Trustee Ursula Morgan received recognition for achieving her 100 credit award. This is a great accomplishment and shows dedication to learning how to serve our community. Economic development is alive and well in Mead. We now have some 194 businesses registered. This is a full one-third more than in the past. The Scavenger Hunt/Business Fair was a great success. We had almost 30 businesses showcasing their operations and over 44 prizes were donated for those that visited the businesses and obtained their business card. One of the great additions to our economic development is the assistance of the Small Business Development Council which provides free business advice. Right now we have five businesses using their services to build and prosper their operations. Thank you to our local bank, the Colorado East Bank and Trust for the use of their conference for these meetings. By the way, the Town is now on Facebook, so if you wish to “like” us, or find out what is happening on a week-toweek basis please visit our page. As always, we appreciate hearing from you with your concerns and suggestions for improvements within our great community. If you can’t make out semi-monthly meetings, please give either me, or one of your other Trustees a call. Please keep in your prayers not only our freedom fighters, but the people that have lost their homes in the forest fires and the fire fighting crews battling those blazes in this heat.
RICHARD MACOMBER, MAYOR OF MEAD
TONY CAREY, MAYOR OF FREDERICK
As I write this article Colorado is in its fourth day of triple digit temperatures. The area is most certainly dry and while we don’t live in the mountains with their devastating forest fires, we do have lots of grass lands around us. Grass lands can burn and spread fire brands faster than a forest fire and with a little wind at its backs those fires can spread to hundreds of acres and consume many structures. My very simple point is be very careful with any types of fires including those for picnics. There is a fire ban in the state. Yes, this is construction season and the improvements to Main Street should be finished by mid-July. I am positive that when the job is finished you will see a great improvement and yes, the street will be two way. This surface improvements hide the storm drainage that we have installed beneath the surface to prevent flooding of homes and businesses and ties into the Third Street improvements we made last year. Also, the landscape improvements on the north side of Welker Avenue (across from the Post Office) will be a dramatic improvement to the entrance to the town and especially to our downtown area. The Town Board did agree that it was time for our staff to “come out of the closet”, literally. As many of you may know we have had two staff members located in what was a utility closet which was cramped and either hot or cold depending upon the season. In working with the Mountain View Fire Protection District the Town will be expanding its portion of Town Hall at the same time that the Fire District is expanding its portion. By doing this project jointly we anticipate savings in the construction costs while we address necessary space needs for the community and planning for future staffing requirements. The Town Board has approved the preparation of construction drawings which will then have to go out for bid. To put your mind at ease, the Town has been planning this for some time and has put aside enough funds so that borrowing is not necessary. For those of you that live in the Grand View, Mulligan Lake and Single Tree subdivisions you will witness some asphalt patching and infrared repairs to your roads. This is necessary work to extend the current life of your roads and results in a substantial savings to the taxpayers versus tearing them up and starting from scratch. Staff wise our former Town Clerk tendered her resignation as she and her family move to Texas. We wish Charlene, and her family, our best and a thank you for all you did for the Town of Mead. Accordingly, the Town Board solicited applications for the position and interviewed four top contenders for the job. I can tell you that a great deal of discussion went into the final selection and after suitable background checks the new Clerk’s name will be announced. During the third week in June some members of your Town Board participated in the Colorado Municipal League annual meeting. For those not aware, this is a series of meetings where we can learn new approaches to providing cost effective services to our constituents, learn how other communities Richard Macomber

Think, Study, Vote! 2012 Presidential Elections:
The PEW Research Center has determined that, “As Americans head to the polls this November, their values and basic beliefs are more polarized along partisan lines than at any point in the past 25 years.â€? And my sense is that they are correct. There are two very different and competing philosophies about the appropriate size, scope, and role of government. And for whatever reasons, these two competing philosophies are largely regional. It’s inarguable that the West coast and most Northeastern states are what we have come to call “Blueâ€? or Democratic-leaning states and the Midwestern and Southern states are “Redâ€? or Republican-leaning states. It’s doubtful that you’ll see either presidential candidate campaigning much in Texas, Utah, or Idaho. Gov. Romney assumes he’ll win those states and Pres. Obama assumes he can’t win in those states. Likewise you won’t see either commit large resources to campaign in Rhode Island, New York, or Vermont, but for the opposite reason. Pres. Obama assumes he’ll carry those states and Gov. Romney assumes he has no chance of winning there. But pollsters and analysts have identified the battleground states where they expect both candidates will campaign aggressively. The vote in these swing states, as they are often called, could go either way in November. And the direction these key states vote will likely decide who will win the election. That Tool/ Coupon Bar May Have Just Cost You Over $100
Quite often, here at LSI, we see computers come in with many tool/coupon bars on their browsers. We had even seen where HALF of the browser window is nothing BUT tool bars! and people don't even know how they got there. Internet tool/coupon bars are supposed to add increased functionality and generally make your web surfing easier, but they rarely do. In our opinion, you should get rid of them, they aren't worth their trouble, and some lesserknown toolbars are downright dangerous! Consider the popular "Yahoo! Toolbar." This toolbar proudly boasts its advantages; bookmarks, email alerts, and spyware protection. These are things that your browser already does, and browsers and operating systems will continue to incorporate the more useful aspects of developing toolbars. There are two types of toolbars, there are the pointless/annoying toolbars (Google Toolbar, Ask.com Toolbar, Windows Live Toolbar, Blogger Toolbar) that are easily uninstalled, and then there are the toolbars that are actually Ad/ Malware. Detecting malware isn't always easy, but there are a few indicators. With malicious tool/coupon bars you may experience random system slowdowns, (they heavily consume Memory and CPU resources) slower and/or redirected searches, popups or various messages saying you are "infected". They can mess with your Internet connection (by using bandwidth to resume advertisements), collect personal data, drop viruses and trojans and/or open backdoors for seedy individuals who invade private and secured information stored on your hard drive. Be aware that these Ad/Malware programs are often downloaded as an IE toolbar or marketed as an online coupon resource which deliver advertisements on your PC, by adding links to your web browser. Ad/Malware-based applications (especially those that aren’t up-front about the ads they’re promoting) should be viewed with scrutiny. As your activity is monitored or recorded at any
time, there is a potential for abuse. And even if it seems harmless, aggressive advertising is obnoxious. If it’s not overtly useful, it’s wise to uninstall this application from your computer to minimize any security risk. If you have enough time and expertise, you can search your computer manually. However, it might take hours to find all of the files, and it’s possible that they will appear after rebooting, their hidden files may still be there. It is usually easy to remove toolbars made by legitimate vendors, but getting rid of malicious toolbars is much more involved and requires the attention of certified professionals who can remove them. Once you’re cleaned up , prevent future malicious programs from returning by learning to be suspicious of spam E-mail attachments and unknown websites. Ways you can help protect your computer against Ad/Malware: ď Ź Use a computer firewall. ď Ź Downloaded all the latest critical security updates. ď Ź Adjust Internet Explorer web browser’s security settings. ď Ź Download and install anti-Spy/Ad/ Malware protection. ď Ź Surf sites and download programs from the web sites you trust. ď Ź When you download anything be sure to read and uncheck any and all sneaky boxes hoping to download that crap onto your computer. For more information call LSI Computer Services, Inc at 303.833.5009. They are located at Hwy 52 and Colorado Blvd. in Dacono. Be sure to meet the staff at the Fourth at Firestone!

Petting Zoo
Every year when the snow starts to melt we always invite our favorite mobile Petting Zoo Morning Start Miniatures Ranch (http://www. morningstarminiaturesranch.com/) to Your Little Ones Locker, kids consignment store in Dacono. We love to see all the new animal babies that were born in the spring, just as much as we enjoy seeing the babies grow up who frequent our store. Of course, a regular favorite is Gus the donkey, he has quite the personality! You have to keep an eye on him or he will open up the gate! Most of the little people who come to visit enjoy petting the chickens and the rabbits. Those who are braver get right in and feed the goats and sheep carrot shreds. In addition to the petting zoo, there are usually 2 ponies along to give kiddos 70lbs and under a ride around the block. The Zoo is set up under the canopy in front of our store located at 204 8th Street in Dacono (we are on the frontage road of highway 52), so there is always plenty of shade for people and creatures alike. Every body who steps inside the rink of animal delight leaves with a smile on their face and a big squirt of hand sanitizer! We hope you come by and visit the store and the animals. They will be at our shop Saturday July 21st, Saturday August 18th and Saturday September 15th this year. If you can’t come by during on of our events the petting zoo is always available to book private birthday parties at your location or theirs. Looking for a fun charity event to do with some friends? Trunk Entrapment Prevention for Pre-Teens and Teens
In this month safety article the FrederickFirestone Fire Protection District would like to present safety information on Vehicle Trunk Entrapment involving Pre-Teens and Teens. For many older kids, a car trunk looks like a fun place to play or hide. Tragically, many families have discovered that kids can get in the trunk, but they can't always get out. Children can access trunks in several ways, even without having the vehicle's keys. Most cars have a lever or button located near the driver's seat that pops the trunk open, while other cars also have fold-down seats or a "pass through" that enables children to climb into the trunk from the back seat. The majority of known unintentional entrapment deaths have occurred during the months of July and August and in outside temperatures of 85°F or above. Cars parked in direct sunlight can reach internal temperatures of 131°F - 172°F, even after only 15 minutes in the sun. Younger children are more sensitive to heat than older children and adults and are at greater risk for heat stroke. The combination of high temperature, humidity and poor ventilation all contribute to the extreme danger of car trunks. Here are Safety Tips that can help prevent a tragic accident. Top Tips: Always lock a vehicle’s doors and trunk - especially when parked in the driveway or near the home – and keep keys out of children’s sight and reach. If a child is missing, check vehicles and trunks first. If you see an unattended child in a car dial 911 immediately. Be aware of child-resistant locks. Teach older children how to disable the driver’s door locks should they become unintentionally entrapped in a motor vehicle. A toddler will not know to climb into the front seat to climb out of the vehicle. If you find your child in a locked car, get him out and dial 911 or your local emergency number immediately to check for signs of heat stroke. Teach children that trunks are only used to transport cargo and are not safe places to play. Show older children how to locate and use the emergency trunk release found in newer cars. Keep the rear fold-down seats closed to help prevent kids from getting into the trunk from inside the car. For more information on this subject or any safety related questions, please contact the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District at 3038 3 3 Rich Marsh 2742 or Attorney At Law visit us at www. ~Connected to Carbon Valley~ fffd.us.

by Trish Rife If you’re anything like me, trying a new salon is a bit overwhelming and, let’s face it, can oftentimes be quite scary; however, when you find a stylist who will actually listen to you, the risk factor decreases dramatically. Kathy Madsen opened Fiori Salon, located at 903 Carbondale Drive in Dacono (at Glen Creighton Blvd/Hwy 52 next to 52 Liquors), on July 1 2011. Madsen is not only the owner, she’s a working stylist. Maybe it’s just me, but when I hear of a business owner who also works on the floor of their business, that speaks volumes to me. That lets me know that they want to keep a hands-on approach with their business and will ensure that things get taken care of properly. I observe that they put more than just their name on a few pieces of paper to establish and

uphold their reputation. I equally trust that when a business owner is working, they ensure (to the best of their ability) to leave their customers/clients satisfied to the point of wanting to return in the future. I trust that if there are any issues that arise while there, the problem will get resolved as professionally as possible. There are numerous advantages to being serviced with an owner “on deck, so to speak. Her salon offers (scissor or razor) haircuts, clipper fades, perms, facial waxing, pedicures/manicures, conditioning treatments, hair lightening and color services, shampoo and sets, updo's. Madsen being with her 25+ years of experience; that is a lot of experience in the hair and beauty industry! She’s been through over two decades of fads and styles, so I’m confident that she will be able to provide you with the look you desire. Razor haircuts give an edgy look while allowing hair to have more movement than a straight cut. And sandal season is upon us, so make sure to keep your feet and toes in healthy, beautiful shape; people do notice! Perms can give you the extra volume and texture See Fiori's pg. 8

We are in the perfect storm for Real Estate, low prices + low rates + low costs = Incredible Deals!! Some of you may be worried about your credit, but most credit problems can be fixed with a little bit of effort. As a Mortgage Expert for the last 17 years, I have NEVER, repeat NEVER seen an opportunity this great in real estate. Let’s look at the facts: Rates are at their absolute lowest levels in over 50 years
Send their photo to carbonvalley@gmail. com & put baby in the subject line. Send name, town, & birth date, along with the photo and how you are related.
Housing prices have seen a huge decrease and are now starting to stabilize Most sellers are paying the closing costs for the buyers Credit Score requirements are at 620 for most programs (This score requirement is very low) If all of these factors don’t encourage someone to go out and buy, I don’t know what you are waiting for. The truth is, if you are renting a home instead of buying one, you are paying too much. The market rates for monthly rent have skyrocketed by an average of 22% over the last three years. Many tenants are paying upwards of $1,800 per month for rent. In comparison, if you purchase a home for $225,000 the average payment including taxes, insurance and mortgage insurance would be about $1,500 monthly. Also, because of our location the entire tri-town area qualifies for a 100% no down payment program. If you decide not to buy a home right now, my question to you is, what are you waiting for? Right now is absolutely the best time to buy a home. Stop paying rent and start building equity for you and your family. For a free consultation (it takes about 10 minutes) to see what you qualify for or to get a plan to help fix your credit, feel free to give me a call, Eddie Stephen – 303-800-2760 direct, or email: estephen@ loansimple.com.

The heat is on at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center. With the hot summer upon us the Carbon Valley Recreation Center is busy with people trying to stay cool with all of our programs and have fun in the water. All of our youth programs are just booming between the new fitness classes, dance, and the summer club program. It is just so exciting to see all the kids participate and have fun! The annual Rockies Skills Challenge had 45 participants and youth tennis lessons are winding their session. The adult volleyball and softball leagues have been completed for the summer and will begin again in the fall. The CARA gymnastics, swim, and track teams are competing at several locations around Colorado and doing very, very well. The Tri-Town Seniors are busy as ever with evening picnics, lunches, and field trips. The CVRD staff is doing a wonderful job in making sure all the programs and events are fun and safe. The Olympic Day held at the Dacono BMX track on 6/23 was a great success. Olympic BMX team member David Herman was at the track all afternoon signing autographs and taking pictures with his fans. The City of Dacono’s Mayor presented David with the Dacono Pride Award and the Carbon Valley Recreation District presented him with the “key” to the track. All of us will be watching him later this summer and we hope that he wins the gold medal. Upcoming activities: Hunters Safety Class - 6/30 and 7/1

Sell Your Home But Keep the Profits
If you're looking at the possibility of selling your home this year, then it may be time to take a closer look at the tax exclusion rules and cost basis of your home in order to reduce your taxable gain, if any, on the sale. The IRS principal residence sale exclusion rule (IRC Section 121) now allows an exclusion of a gain up to $250,000 for a single taxpayer or $500,000 for a married couple filing jointly. This exclusion can be continued to be used over and over during your lifetime, as long as you meet the following Ownership and Use tests. However, it cannot be used more frequently than every two years. During the five year period ending on the date of the sale of your home, you must have met the following: • Owned your home for at least two years (Ownership Test) • Lived in your home as your principal residence for at least two years (Use Test) • During the 2-year period prior to the date of the sale, you have not excluded gain from the sale of another home. If you own more than one home, you can exclude the gain only on your principal residence. The IRS uses several factors to determine which home is a principal residence. They are as follows: the place of employment, location of family members' main home, mailing address on bills and correspondence, tax returns, driver's license, car registration, voter registration, and possibly the location of banks that you use. Additionally, when selling your home, consider all improvements that have been made to the home over the years. These improvements will increase the cost basis of the home and thereby reduce the potential capital gain. In order for the home improvement to be added to the cost basis of your home, these additions and other improvements need to have a useful life of more than one year. Recordkeeping: Good recordkeeping is essential for determining the adjusted cost basis of your home. I recommend that you should keep records proving your home's cost basis for as long as you own your house. The records you should keep include but are not limited to the following: • Proof of the home's purchase price and purchase expenses – this can usually be found on the closing statement • Receipts and other records for all improvements, additions, and other items that affect the home's adjusted cost basis Please contact me if you have any questions. Hydration and Sports Nutrition For Your Workouts
With the hot summer months upon us, if you're doing any form of exercising (which hopefully you are), consider these strategies to help you get the most out of your workouts and for a healthier you. Regular exercise is an important part of health and fitness, but did you know that what you ate last night for dinner and for breakfast this morning can have a huge impact on the quality of your workout today? Proper hydration and sports nutrition will ensure your diet will efficiently fuel your workout routine and help optimize athletic performance. Here are the important pieces of a healthy training diet that supports athletic performance: • Smart Hydration for Better Workouts. The human body is made up of 60% water with fluids that help maintain normal body temperature and deliver energy and nutrients to hardworking muscles. An adult loses about 2 liters of fluid per day, and failure to replace these lost fluids raises the risk of dehydration. So it's recommended at a minimum, to drink half of your body weight in ounces per day of water. Also, drink an additional 8 ounces of water for every 25 pounds carried above your ideal weight. It's essential to stay hydrated so you can perform better and push through your workout. Here it is broken down to make sure you're getting the fluids that your body needs. Pre-hydration begins with three cups of fluid in the hours leading up to your workout to assure normal levels with the goal to prevent dehydration from happening in the first place. During your workout, hydrating with cool liquids early and often helps to prevent dehydration, electrolyte imbalances, and to minimize negative effects on athletic performance. In hot and humid conditions, you should drink even more fluids for

security to families. But, there is a lot more to it than that, and here are some facts about homeowners from the National Association of Realtors, Federal Reserve Board, and the US Census Bureau: • They are more likely to vote, • They volunteer their time more frequently for charitable causes, • They move less often, providing more neighborhood stability, • The decision to stay in school by teenage students is higher for those raised by home-owning parents, • Daughters of homeowners have a much lower incidence of teenage pregnancy, • The median net worth of homeowners it 45.9 times that of a renter’s ($234,200 vs. $5,100), • Owner occupied housing is better maintained than non-owner occupied property, • In addition to being more satisfied with their own personal situation, homeowners also enjoy better physical and psychological health, • Homeowners are less likely to report financial hardships, • The average child of a homeowner is significantly more likely to achieve a higher level of education, and thereby, a higher level of earnings. These are some of the reasons that homeownership is called the “American Dreamâ€?. Taking the big step from renting to owning can be a difficult one, but with planning and patience, it can become a reality. 2012 Citizen’s Police Academy Graduates Students
Twenty-two Carbon Valley residents graduated from the Citizen’s Police Academy and accepted certificates of completion on June 6, 2012. Ten of those graduates were Firestone residents. The Firestone Police Department co-hosted the Citizen’s Police Academy with the Weld County Sheriff’s Office, as well as the Frederick and Dacono police departments. The academy included 12 weeks of classes at the Southwest Weld Service Center and the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District’s Training Center. Firestone Chief of Police David Montgomery commented during the graduation ceremony, “You are the reason we are here, and the reason we have great programs in our community. The Citizen’s Police Academy is a community-oriented policing program designed for citizens of south Weld County and the municipal police departments that serve this portion of the county. The program operates on the premise that informed and educated citizens will be more supportive of police officers and the department, and will be more productive within their own neighborhoods and communities to help solve problems and share ideas, making this portion of the county a better place to live. Classes offered included: tours of the Weld County Jail and Dispatch Center; criminal justice and prosecution; gang activity and recognition; K-9 and SWAT Team demonstrations; mock crime scene and evidence collection; use of force simulator; and traffic accident investigation. Residents interested in participating in future Citizen’s Police Academy classes should contact the “In The I25 Business Park at I25 & Highway 66 970-535-6074 Firestone Police Department at 303-833-0811.

Your Front Door
A little research reveals many significant meanings for the exterior front door, particularly the red front door, such as bringing positive energy in to your home via Feng Shui, good luck, warding off evil spirits and ghosts, a variety of religious symbolisms, making a statement your house is paid for or just plain Welcome! Regardless of what color your front door is it needs to be kept up. The Colorado sun is the worst enemy to your front door, particularly if it is south facing. A south facing front door can need maintenance as often as every other year, depending upon the weather each season and door placement. West and East facing doors are next. Wood doors need to be protected so they don’t crack and split from exposure to UV rays, rain, snow, ice, sprinkler systems, etc. A new, unpainted wood door needs to be sanded then primed with a good exterior wood primer before it is painted. If your door is already painted it still needs to be sanded and if any if any bare wood appears those areas need to be primed before painting. If staining your wood door it needs to be sanded first as well, then stained, and followed by a top coat with a good, high end varnish or spar urethane. The edges must be painted - all edges, top, bottom and sides must be sealed and finished. Although metal doors hold up to the elements they still need to be painted. We recommend top of the line exterior paint for most front doors in a satin, semigloss or gloss. Now what color should we paint that door? A front door painted a contrasting color from the body or trim of your home can set it a part. It can also make it distinguishable to others. When giving directions to your place, its easy to note, “Our house is the only house on the block with a yellow front door. If you’re unsure about using bold colors elsewhere on your home’s exterior, your front door is a safe place to do it. Paint your front door and shutters the same color for a look that will show the personality of your home. For more info please call Tim Zaerr at 303.678.8442, Blue Parrot Painting.

As a person who has gone through a total transformation losing 126 lbs naturally without diets, surgeries, and fad exercise programs and gadgets‌ I know a thing or two about how to coax the body into losing weight and keeping it off. I started off as a size 24 and now wear a size 4. I never in my wildest dreams thought that I could do it because every diet failed me! I would lose weight‌ just to gain it back again. The problem was‌ the diet would give me the results on the scale‌but my lifestyle stayed the same. If you never change your lifestyle‌ how can you expect to keep the weight off? The same habits are still there. I did a lot of “Mindset changesâ€? that led me to a permanent transformation. Here are some of the most common f.a.q.’s that I am asked regarding my personal weight loss: • Q= What diet did you follow? A= I followed a clean-eating nutrition plan that was specifically tailored to my own personal caloric and macronutrient needs that were required by the amount of exercise I was involved in and the amount of weight that I desired to lose. • Q= How much cardio did you have to do? A= I did 3-5 days of 20-30 minutes per day of cardio. I also lifted weights to help myself build lean muscle which increases one’s metabolic rate and in turn allows you to burn more calories at rest. The weight lifting help cut the body fat and also helped me with skin tightening and toning. • Q= What diet pills did you take? A= No pills were needed. • Q= How long did it take you to lose all of that weight? A= It took a total of 2 years to lose the 126lbs. It is not healthy to lose over 2 lbs per week. If you are losing more than 2 lbs/week‌ chances are you are muscle wasting and/or losing retained water weight. Your skin can become very saggy and your immune system becomes stressed out. Adrenal fatigue can set in when your calories are too low. I have many clients who have undergone fantastic transformations as well, and some of them have lost even a greater amount of weight than me. Each and every one of them has followed my advice and had amazing and mind blowing results. Personal trainers can help you achieve your fitness goals; but it’s always better to find one who has actually “walked the walkâ€? versus “talk the talkâ€?. Here at Just TRI Fitness, LLC‌ we are the “total packageâ€?. We not only offer everything that you need... Loni and I also have personal experiences with losing a lot of weight and keeping it off. We conduct one-on-one personal training sessions, group instruction, boot camps, and we have a certified fitness nutrition specialist that can help you clean up your eating plan and make suggestions for sports related supplements to help you achieve your dreams of becoming fit and healthy! When We Trash-Talk the Perpetrator of Sexual Abuse, We May Silence a Survivor
By Carolyn Byers Ruch HATFIELD, PA (ANS) -- For many who have been victims of childhood sexual abuse, the past few weeks have been very difficult and have provoked feelings of both anger and sadness as they think back to what they have been through at the hands of perpetrators. For those of us who have been shocked by the recent news coverage of sexual abuse cases, these past few weeks have been a struggle as we have attempted to process our thoughts and articulate our feelings regarding such heinous crimes toward children. I've listened to vicious comments toward sexual offenders all week. I've even been tempted to utter them myself. Okay, I'll admit it. . . I have uttered some of them. But I pray, I've uttered them in private -- away from my children -- away from my survivor friends. Why? Because ninety percent of adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse were violated by someone they knew, trusted, and loved. Ninety percent of children who are

Recreational Boating Incidents on the Rise Allstate Offers Tips to Avoid Mayhem on the Water
As summer approaches and Colorado residents are preparing for boating season; it’s important to bring safety to the water along side sunscreen and towels. Boating, one of America’s favorite past times, recorded a total of 4,730 accidents according to the U.S. Coast Guard in 2009. More than 700 deaths occurred, over 3,300 injuries and approximately $36 million in property damage where reported. “Many boating accidents are preventable and knowing the causes of common accidents helps avoid them,” said Erika Lousberg, local Allstate agent. “The top four causes of boating accidents, as published by the US Coast Guard, involve operator factors such as inattention, inexperience, excessive speed, improper lookout and alcohol consumption.” This summer, Allstate would like to decrease the number by having you follow the simple boating safety tips below: • Take a boating education course. Allstate offers discounts (subject to availability and qualifications) to boaters who have successfully completed qualifying boating courses from groups such as the U.S. Coast Guard, U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and U.S. Power Squadron. • Make wearing life jackets a rule. Most laws require having U.S. Coast Guard approved life jackets on board your vessel (for all passengers.) • Don’t mix drinking and boating. • Know the weather and water conditions. • File a float plan; give the information to a friend or relative who can call for help if you do not return as scheduled. • Observe the nautical rules-of-the-water including speed limits. • Get a courtesy vessel safety check. • Report emergencies via Ch. 16 on a marine VHF-FM radio. • Do not discharge oil, track or sewage into the water. • Properly insure the boat and make sure it has sufficient coverage. For more information, contact Erika Lousberg, (above) your local Allstate agent at 303-442-4902.

So come on out to the parade on the 4th of July and see any cheerleader to order your flock and if you can't make the parade please email staciknepp@ yahoo.com for more information.

Burger King Franchisee, OCEDON, is Accepting Donations to the American Red Cross to aid with the Colorado Disaster Response Participating Burger King restaurants throughout Colorado are currently accepting donations to aid the American Red Cross in helping with those affected by the wildfire disasters. “We wanted to help, so now you can visit any of our Burger King locations beginning today and donate to the American Red Cross, said Diane Schurbon, Burger King Restaurant Manager in Colorado Springs. The participating Burger Kings are owned by OCEDON, which operates 23 BURGER KING restaurants located throughout Denver, Aurora, Pueblo, Canon City, Colorado Springs, Woodland Park, Greeley, Littleton, Longmont, Firestone, Loveland and Sterling in Colorado. “Many of our employees’ homes have been affected by the wildfires, so this is near and dear to us. We want to do our part to take care of our community, said Diara Campbell, Restaurant Manager. The BURGER KINGŽ Colorado franchisees began a partnership with the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter in 2007 and provided the Red Cross with a gift of $55-thousand to purchase a new Mobile Feeding Vehicle. This generous gift allows the American Red Cross Mile High Chapter to better respond to the needs of those affected by disaster and to better “Prepare Colorado to be ready around the clock. The vehicle is equipped as a mobile feeding unit with the ability to feed hundreds of people during disasters in Colorado. Many of the BURGER KINGŽ restaurants are also on call 24 hours to assist in food donations during emergencies. Several BURGER KINGŽ franchisees have already donated food, a supply of cups as well as toys and hats for children during recent emergencies.

Alaska- Some Place Special!
Planning lots of cruises to Alaska this year and the great pricing has brought back some wonderful memories of our cruise to Alaska.. So I thought I would share some of my experiences to paint the picture for you. We had been promising ourselves a visit to this wonderful, majestic place called Alaska and fulfilled our dreams. It is truly an immense, picturesque, photo-filled opportunity of experiences and memories. We began our journey with an over-night stay in Vancouver, British Columbia. We love to people-watch on our trips, as we did during our river cruise in France a few years ago, found a busy outdoor café boulevard location, and spent the afternoon conversing about the bustling crowd passing by and sampling the local brew. This was a perfect way to begin our trip. Our first day on board was spent enjoying the beautiful scenery of the Inside Passage. Our first port of call was Ketchikan for our scheduled half day salmon fishing trip. We chartered a boat and headed out early in the morning. We kept a total of seven salmon, about eightten pounds each, which we had processed, smoked, sent home. Our next port of call was Juneau and our first of two bike rides on our trip. Our bike ride took our group through lush, rain forest on our way to world famous Mendenhall Glacier. We noted how crystal clear the broken-off ice particles were gliding slowly down into the lake. The immenseness and aqua blue/green hues of the Mendenhall Glacier were just amazing. As I stated before, we took two bike rides and our ship has now sailed up to Skagway. We were taken to the summit of White Pass by van transport, climbed on our road bikes and gently glided down the mountain pass. We stopped a few times

violated are molested by someone they know, trust and love. It's complicated and hard to understand. But when we trash talk perpetrators, we run the risk of hurting survivors and silencing children who have been violated. "How is your client doing?" the reporter asked an attorney who had recently represented a man who had claimed he had been molested as a young boy. "He feels vindicated, but this was difficult for him," the attorney responded. "He had to look the man in the face who was his surrogate father and tell the world what this man did to him." This attorney did his homework. He understood the delicate fears, emotions, and compassionate heart of his survivor client.
for photo-ops, taking in the breath taking views of mountain sides going forever and natural waterfalls. Needless to say, the trip was very exhilarating. You’ll want to wear layered clothing and gloves for this ride. It was time then to settle in for three days at sea while still viewing the beautiful scenery, but also taking part in the activities on the ship. While on our way to Whittier our final destination, we sailed through Prince William Sound and College Fjords, again just magnificent. The weather for the entire trip on the cruise and land stops was great, in the 60’s all week. Our cruise ended in Whittier, where we rented a car and headed to Anchorage. There is a one-way tunnel about a mile and a half out of town where only one-way traffic is allowed, on the hour, so be prepared for a wait if your timing isn’t right. We were fortunate to see orca whales, black and brown bears, sea lions, huge bald eagles, and sea otters sunning themselves floating on their backs in the water on small ice blocks. We now have become part of a growing number of travelers who have experienced the true meaning of Alaskan hugeness, but there is so much more to see, next stop will be Denali National Park and beyond. If you’d like to part of that growing number visiting Alaska this is a great time because cruise prices are exceptional. Prices starting at $499.00 per person (restrictions apply). Contact Judy at www.goingplaces-travel.com or 303-485-9930 for your next trip anywhere in the world.
Is it possible that a victim can love and care for their perpetrator? Yes, it is. When we let our emotions run unleashed from our mouth for all to hear, we may hurt the survivors in our presence. We may keep a child near us -- who has been violated -- silent. You see, all the survivors I know are compassionate people and most of them were violated by someone they loved. And children, precious, precious children, are the most forgiving creatures that walk the earth. Both adult survivors and child survivors know that if they tell, people around them will get hurt. So they keep their mouths shut to protect both the perpetrator and those who also love the perpetrator. Let us let survivors utter words of hatred and anger toward those who violated them and guard our tongues.

We may be hurting those who have already been traumatized and we may be causing a child to keep silent. We best love adult survivors and help child victims break their silence when we offer healing words and leave the harsh words to those who have the right to say them. You may ask how I can make these observations, so let me explain. At the age of four, a hired field-hand attempted to molest me. Miraculously, I got away and told my father everything. I have spent the past ten years championing this issue and listening to survivors' hearts. I have also received training certificates from some of the leading organizations dedicated to protecting children.
Recently I released "Rise and Shine: A Tool for the Prevention of Childhood Sexual Abuse", and founded www.RiseAndShineMovement.org, where adults can find my free book and resources to help them protect children from sexual abuse. So will you join me in protecting the children in your care and share the Rise and Shine Movement with your family and friends? Together we can protect the children of the world.
