Mead's First Annual Summer Festival Huge Hit On June 8th in Town Park the Town of Mead and the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce hosted the 1st Annual Mead Summer Festival. Hundreds of members of the local community and their families attended the Summer Festival helping to emphasize that Mead is growing and the sense of community is spreading.

The Summer Festival was Free and open to the public including many fun family friendly activities presented by local businesses in the Mead Area. From 4-8 p.m. the public was invited to enjoy various games, prizes, a bounce house, face painting, pie throwing, the much anticipated Sing-for-Your-Supper (children’s karaoke) and Community voting on new Town of Mead Logo.

Not only was this an entertaining affair for families, but also an excellent opportunity for Mead area businesses to showcase their goods and services.

The Fun-Loving Mead Seniors

By Robin Barrett Did you know there is a group of seniors that are having a blast and having wonderful fellowship right in your own back yard? The Mead Seniors is a group of local folks, Meadites, that are all just a fun-loving and an overall caring community. About 30 of them are active volunteers.

This active group was formed in 1988 with 14 members strong. They met at the Mead Methodist Church, in the basement of all places. At that time, they met for lunch at noon.

Their meals were prepared by the kitchen at UNC in Greeley.

Through the years they have had some wonderful coordinators: Pauline Amen, Rose Fiechtner, Leona & Harvey Potts, and Maggie Cornell. Now, add to that list, Barbara Currie.

Barbara is the Senior Coordinator for the Mead Seniors. She took this position on January 1, 2013. Barbara has been involved with the Mead Seniors for the past 12 years as a volunteer and assistant coordinator to Maggie Cornell.

As the attendance grew, the group starting meeting at the Town Hall of Mead. The Mead Seniors group has grown to 80 members. Out of those members, about 45 to 50 attend lunch, regularly, on Thursdays.

For these luncheons, there is a suggested donation of $3.00 for those that are 55 plus and all those under 55, $10.00. Reservations can be called in to Barbara Currie at 970-535-0548 by 8am on Wednesdays.

Let’s get to the fun activities for the group. On Monday and Wednesday’s, there is exercise from 9am to 9:45am. On the 1st Thursday at 1pm Bingo is played after lunch. On the 3rd Tuesday of every month, there is a book club that meets at 2pm. To add to these fun activities, field trips are often taken. The favorite is always the mystery trip!! There is also breakfast, dinner pot lucks and lots of picnics in the park. There is an annual Christmas party and oh!...do the Mead Seniors know how to throw a great party. Along the way, there are speakers and other entertainment for everyone’s enjoyment!

Here’s a big announcement for current and potential members. As of June 27th, Mead Seniors will be meeting at the Mead Guardian Angels Church Fellowship Hall. The Mead Seniors will meet there until the construction at the Mead Town Hall is complete.

If you want to fill your calendar with lots of fun social events, I hope this article has brought awareness to the exciting and loving Mead Seniors group that is right at your back door. If so give Barbara Currie a call and she’ll be glad to help you get started in a community group that is full of excitement and fellowship.

By Heidi Kerr-Schlaefer Tiffany Yenchus-Holcomb is a mother of three, who is finishing up a double degree in public relations/ marketing and business administration while working as the executive director of the reenergized Mead Area Chamber of Commerce.

Yenchus-Holcomb has a soft place in her heart for small business. She had just joined the Downtown Revitalization Committee in August when the Mead Chamber’s executive director position came to her attention.

“I approached Ted because I thought this would be a great way for me to support small businesses locally and to use the skills I’ve gained thus far in school,” said Yenchus-Holcomb.

“My ultimate goal is to have a freelance public relations marketing business where I focus on small businesses.”

She believes many small businesses fail because they don’t realize what resources are available to them and they don’t understand the difference between advertising and marketing. She wants to help businesses survive and thrive by using grassroots approaches to promote their companies.

Yenchus-Holcomb and her husband, Matthew Holcomb, moved to Mead in 2007. They wanted their children to grow up in a small, community-minded town. They are hands-on

up every day. The message parents and active at their children’s school.

“My husband has been such an inspiration. I watched about the benefits of becoming a him go back to school and not only finish his bachelor’s chamber member is getting out degree, but also his master’s degree all while working full- to the businesses in Mead and time, fulfilling his duties with the National Guard and being beyond.

I wanted to take a quick moment to introduce myself. First off, thank you for entrusting me with the honor of selecting me to be the Chamber president. It is not a task I take lightly and I hope, with your help, to accomplish some exciting things in our town. I’ve lived here nearly 10 years and have seen a lot of growth and progress and I hope to be able to continue that momentum as well as add some fresh ideas into the mix.

The way I’ve interpreted the chamber’s mission is two faceted. First and foremost, we need to keep our current members happy. I believe we’ll need to touch base with a majority of the businesses and ask them exactly what it will take to do that. And secondly, we need to attract new members and new businesses. This will take some strategizing and input from multiple sources, so I hope everyone is willing to put on their thinking caps and get ready for a few brainstorming sessions!

We all have professional and personal lives that keep us busy, but I think we can agree that bringing in new business will help us succeed in our own profession, otherwise, we wouldn’t have joined the chamber, so I hope you can all attend the next meeting at Ranchero Restaurant on July 10 at noon.

zz Well we have moved from eight inches of snow on May 1 to record breaking high temperatures- winter to summer in a very short time frame. From someone who has suffered from dehydration I urge you to keep yourself and family suitably hydrated. zz July will witness the start of another successful summer recreation program for the town’s youngsters. We have received very favorable comments regarding the administration and activities for the first session. June was a blast of activities. I hope you were able to participate in the Mead Summer Festival and cast your vote for one of the five potential new Town of Mead logos. A big thanks also to all of the Mead businesses that participated. A thanks to the Colorado East Bank and Trust Company for the celebration of the demolishment of the old red barn and to the new owners of that property. I don’t think anyone shed a tear to see it come down. zz Summer as we know all to well is construction time.

Many of you have asked what is the future of the energy drilling operations south of the schools on Third Street. First of all Encana has constructed some rather large temporary water tanks just to the north of the structure. This is part of the production process and will negate trucking in all that water on our roads. We have been informed that the tanks , equipment and sound walls will be removed in late July/early August. Late July should see the beginning of the desperately needed renovations to town hall. The town offices will be temporarily relocated to 4155 Mulligan Drive in the business park. For those dropping off your sewer bills there will be a drop box attached to the fencing at the Public Works building on north Main Street. I can assure you that the staff will maintain business as usual at the new location. zz The above is not the only construction going on . The Vale

View subdivision will have some significant and necessary road repairs. We are also starting on the needed trails project (which is one of the strategic goals selected by your Board of Trustees). We also recognize that suitable infrastructure is necessary for a healthy, vibrant and prosperous community and accordingly we have embarked on a traffic study to determine which roads will need upgrading and have the documentation to apply for grants.

The private sector has recognized your Town of Mead as the “place to be” and you will see some enhanced level of activity in the business park. The town also is planning on improving some of the attributes that attracts businesses (and accordingly employment opportunities) in the business park such as sidewalks, drainage and beautification. zz If I have not mentioned it before I should announce that Walter Garcia has been appointed as the new Public Works Director.

Walter brings a great deal of knowledge and experience to the position and we know he will do a great job for the town. While capable staff is critical to running a great town such as Mead, volunteers are a critical factor in making the quality of life here so much better. First of all thanks to all who participated in the planting and improvement to the landscape around the gazebo in the park. I do know there were lots of you and the list is very long but your efforts are really appreciated. As Main Street improves with the removal of some derelict structures, including the paving, sidewalks and street lights the Downtown Revitalization volunteer committee is seeing new blood with the addition of Jeffrey Swanson and welcoming back Judy Orback. Volunteerism is a way of life in Colorado and I applaud all of your efforts and hard work. zz Your town board meets on the second and last Monday of every month and we welcome your attendance and thoughts. If you can’t make the meeting just talk with one of your elected Trustees or give me a call or send me an email. I can also meet you for coffee or a light repast( we have some great eating establishments in this town) if you so desire just to be sure that I understand completely your thoughts. Please watch out for the children as they potentially chase that ball into the streets and keep in your prayers the men and women protecting our freedoms no matter where in the world they are stationed.

Summer Recreation Program Second Session Thursday Enrichment Classes

Session Two: July 11-Science Experiment Expo (12pm3pm) Come spend the afternoon exploring space at this week’s Thursday enrichment. We will eat lunch and then start our journey by making volcanic eruptions. Then we will discover and create edible space worms. Make bouncy planets and finish by capturing stars in jars. *Cost: $10 per camper July 18- Sports Competition Camp (12pm3pm) This camp will begin with a walk over to Founder’s Park, where the kids will enjoy their lunches in a picnic style. After lunch we will be having a fun filled day in our camp competition extra session where we will split the children up into groups and have them create their own team jerseys and compete in several different competitions. These competitions will try and help the children develop teamwork and communication while expanding their interests. There will be prizes for the groups that win as well as some given out for the participation. The mission of the Mead Children’s Choir is to provide a 970-535-0311 venue for the local community’s Abundant Life Church children to learn music, cultivate the human spirit, improve on musical Sunday Service at 10am talents, and experience the joy that 4380 Highway 66, 1/3 mile east of I-25 comes from singing together in a Longmont, CO 80504 choir. We will foster the growth of discipline, teamwork, responsibility, www.alcworshipwarriors.org and self-confidence. Though we are committed to achieving excellence through education and performance, our wish is for every child to have personal enjoyment, making their experience with the choir emotionally fulfilling and memorable. A typical rehearsal will include: Warm-up: Focus on expanding the range of the children’s voices, breathing techniques, vocal versatility and diction exercises Musicianship Training: We plan to use a Kodály approach to teaching by using games and songs to teach the children about music. They will learn & understand musical terminology and learn how to sight sing through solfège.

Rehearsing Repertoire: We will teach the children a blend of classical & folk choral literature. We will also teach them upbeat, fun repertoire to motivate their love for learning music.

The Mead Children’s Choir will perform major concerts each year, Christmas and Spring.

Big Red Barn Demolition

The new owner of the Red Barn property on Main Street in Mead, knocked down the old 1906 structure last Saturday afternoon. The building was not salvageable structurally. The property owner, Wendy Gauger, will be building a new building on the site and use some of the Red Barn siding as an architectural feature. Photos courtesy of Debi Bancroft and Dan Dean.
