By Kelly Fordyce Martindale Looking out over the patterned farm land, seeing Dacono’s water towers and glimpsing Milavec Lake surrounded by trees and homes, was an incredible experience with the cool breeze in my hair and the early morning sun blushing my cheeks. I experienced this and more thanks to the hospitality of Don and Debbi Waltman and their crew from No Worries!! A hot air balloon company from Windsor, Colorado, specializing in balloon rides. But it was so much more than a “balloon ride.” Debbi, a pilot since 1994, was not only a personable hostess but teacher, comedian, and photography consultant too. It was perfect; it didn’t feel too high, it wasn’t bumpy and it wasn’t cold at all. It was tranquil and exhilarating at the same time. Debbi and I were joined by my son, Robert Logan. The three of us fit comfortably in the triangular shaped basket along with propane tanks and navigational equipment. On the outside, however, were the movers and shakers known as the Chase Crew; Don Waltman

This locally owned and family ran store is the beating heart of Teddi Begley. A single mother of two, Teddi spends her days working in her store, caring for her pets (horse, chickens, turtle, cats and dogs) and spoiling her granddaughter, Halee. Her daughter, Ashley Murphy, is a great help working evenings. Teddi owns and runs her business with the same heart and soul that her grandfather, August Brandy, ran his gas station in the 1930’s. That was back when gas was two cents a gallon! When the Great Depression challenged him with financial despair he went out and found new ways to keep his family fed and his business running. What’s On My Daughters Mind

Some of you know me, some of you may not. I am Kelly’s daughter, so, you may feel like you know me through some of her articles. I am 25 years old, and have been through my fair share of life. I have experienced, guilt, shame, hitting rock bottom, soaring above the clouds, depression, and trials that teenagers should never have to experience, and tragedy that I would never even wish on my worst enemy. I have been proud of myself, experienced others being proud of me, I have been acknowledged for good deeds, I have gone to 3rd world countries on missions trips, I have enjoyed jobs, enjoyed school, and enjoyed my kids. But, amongst the highs and extreme lows, something was always missing. I became very aware of this something missing on May 7, 2011. The date of my graduation from nursing school. A day that I should have been so proud of myself that I accomplished something so hard, with flying colors, as single working mom. I graduated with nearly straight A’s, and you don’t get straight A’s in college, let alone, nursing school without some hard work and effort. But, my graduation meant nothing. I looked beautiful, my family and friends were there, you could feel how proud that room was full of family members anxiously awaiting for their loved one to get pinned. And yet, I had to plaster a fake smile to my face. I was empty, completely hollow, completely numb. And why? I started to really question what was so wrong with myself and my life that I couldn’t even be truly happy at my college graduation. I had wanted nothing more than to become a nurse, and provide a financially stable life for my daughter whom was four at the time. I did it! And, I couldn’t have cared less. I stared at my classmates who were truly happy and proud of themselves. Jealous. Their families overrun with emotion, overrun run with pride, and overrun with happiness. Jealous. I am not saying that my family wasn’t happy or proud of me, but, I wasn’t happy or proud

of me and that meant I couldn’t accept how my family felt for me. The answer to the question why, was farther away than I had hoped. Over two years later, I finally have my answer. Happiness. All my life, I have had moments of happiness, family made me happy, my daughter made me happy, my job made me happy… but I was still empty, as empty as the bottom of a well that dried up a hundred years ago. I was not happy with myself. The key word two sentences prior, is moments, I had moments of happiness. Are you just having MOMENTS of happiness? It is no way to live. Not only do you slowly destroy yourself, but you destroy your relationships, your job, your kids, even little things like watching your favorite movie. All of it. Gone… unfulfilling, just another day you must suffer through, with MOMENTS of happiness. I was done, completely done with being unhappy. Ten months ago, when I was six month pregnant, my fiancé left me. I, yet again, watched my world crumble around me. Desperately trying to pick up the rubble and put it back together, yet every piece of rubble I touched just disintegrated into dust and it was quickly swept away by the unforgiving wind taking the bits of my life out of my reach. Hopelessly lost in oblivion. I was left a single mom of two kids, not working, no job prospects, a house that is too expensive to afford, a car I thought would get repossessed, a five-year-old that needed me, and I had nothing left to give her. I was drained, mentally, emotionally, physically, and financially. That was it, my life was over, my daughter’s life was ruined, and this new unborn baby would be born into a family that couldn’t support her. Devastation. I don’t know why, but a fire was ignited in my heart. I was always a believer in God, but I never actively followed Him. I threw up my hands and yelled at God “Fine! Clearly I just screw up my own life, and destroy my daughters, so if your way is REALLY the

I have nothing left, I ruined it all!” This was not a solemn cry out to God, this was a royally mad person, basically telling God “I am going to test you.” So, from that moment on, angry, mad, sad, or any other emotion, I grabbed (even reluctantly) my Bible study every day, read my Bible and prayed like a vulture relentlessly eating food. I needed to find a way to become full. God said He could fill me up, so I just had to see if it was true. People say to never test God. But, we all do it. We all dare Him, to prove to us that He is there. God must have been so excited for His daughter to run towards Him. I died to myself so I could live for God. God has taught me a lot of lessons these last ten months. Some of them were not so nice. My biggest one, stop planning my own life, because, clearly it doesn’t work out! If it did, I wouldn’t be a single mom of two working full time, going to school full time, and praying ends meet every month. I love my life, I love myself, I love my kids. I laugh freely, I embrace the dork God made me to be, and I use the gifts God gave me, specifically made for me so I can use them to honor Him. Even with all my wrong choices, even when I was standing in the ashes of my life that I personally lit fire too, God, MY Heavenly Father, was waiting patiently for me to come back to Him. Like any loving earthly father, God loves me no matter my faults, no matter how many times a run away, and not matter how many times I stray from His will for my life. He is there, waiting to take my hand, walk with me, and gently pull me back to the path He intended me to have. I have peace in my life that I have never felt before. I am happy. God filled me up even when I was determined to spill all He had given me. Our wells may run dry, but God’s well is forever un-ending, forever abundant, and forever ours for the taking. Let God fill you up, be selfish in wanting all the good, and all the blessing He wants to give you. God is just waiting for you to run to Him so He can spoil you. You are His child, allow yourself to be spoiled by Him. Because, let me tell you, being spoiled by God is the most rewarding, fulfilling, and loving, experience EVER!

Did you hear that Facebook is recognizing the hash tag ( # symbol) now? It’s a great way to find topical conversations. This is going to be amazing for your business. For instance, if you’re a realtor, put #RealEstate at the end of your posts and that will highlight that keyword. Whenever someone clicks on it, they will be able to read everything that people are taking about Real Estate! You can change it up and use #Realtor, #DenverHomes, #HouseforSale, etc. Even adding more than one keyword is great! It will help you connect with more people! Try using hashtags in reference to a particular post, and that will be ten times more beneficial than just a post by itself! Make sense? You can add hashtags after each of your own posts to hopefully find more clients and people also talking about these subjects. Pancake Breakfast 4th of July

The ladies of the American Legion Auxiliary, Post 1985 will once again prepare a pancake breakfast buffet for the 4th at Firestone celebration. The breakfast is open to the public and we invite everyone to join us for a great way to "kick start" your holiday celebration. American Legion 1985, 809 1st Street, Firestone, CO. Sweet Magnolias Salon Turns Five

5 years ago, after working in other salons, Diana Letkomiller and Kayla Olson opened Sweet Magnolias Salon on July 3, 2008. The hit movie "Steel Magnolias" from 1989, known for its fun and family-oriented story that takes place around a beauty salon in New Orleans, was their inspiration for the salon name. Like the movie, they wanted a salon where everyone knows everyone else, and was embedded in the community. Both Letkomiller and Olson have 15+ years of experience and strive to provide a friendly atmosphere with quality service at reasonable rates for men, women, and children. Both stylists stay current on new styles and coordinate styles with face shapes and color with skin tones. They provide a full range of hair services including: cuts, colors, highlights, perms, hair straightening, facial waxing and eye brow tinting. Clients come from all over the area including Frederick, Firestone, Dacono, Longmont, Erie, Ft. Lupton Platteville, Thornton, Northglenn, Westminster, and even as far as Wheatridge. American Legion Auxiliary $500 Awards

The American Legion Auxiliary #1985 awarded two $500.00 scholarships for 2013. This years' recipients were Christian Martinez and Zachery Gomez. Congratulations to two very fine young men and good luck in their chosen fields. We know they will do well.

Help Others by Donating Your Prom Dress

Wondering what to do with your prom dress after this year’s events? A local group is collecting dresses, shoes, and other items associated with Prom with the intent to bless others. They will be offering the donated prom dresses for free to anyone who dreams of going to prom but doesn’t want to or cannot spend much money on a dress. The event will be next spring, with dates and location to be announced later through the Carbon Valley Consumer Report. Meals on Wheels Needs Volunteers

Bless a home-bound person by delivering nutritious meals to them in the comfort of their own home. Volunteers are needed to deliver meals. You must have car, valid license and insurance. There are many routes and times available. Volunteers are also needed in office to prepare the meals for delivery. Again, a variety of shifts are available. Volunteer positions take place between 8:30 and noon and are flexible, so call to see if you can help out! Call Holly at Firestone’s Meal on Wheels. They are located at 300 First Street in Firestone. American Cancer Society Names 2013 Chair Lea Faulkner

This one of a kind event will be held September 21st, 2013 at the Spicer Arena in Eaton, Colorado. The American Cancer Society takes great pride in announcing this year’s Event Chair, Lea Faulkner, who is returning after serving as co-chair in 2009 and first woman emcee in 2011. While this event is free, City Council members will be collecting a $5 cash donation to benefit the Tri-Town Food Bank. Once again, many thanks to our generous corporate sponsors and partners, Stericycle,® with additional support provided by Gator Rubbish Removal. z Our signature city event is the Carbon Valley Music and Spirits Festival on Saturday, August 3. The day kicks off with a city parade and the festival opens at noon. We will have food vendors, live music all day, a kids area, beer garden, and a spirits tasting competition. Our music

line-up includes: Afrosippi Bank featuring Erica Brown, After Midnight, Jeff Brinkman Band, Jaden Carlson, Jake Miles, Face and The Samples. The night is capped-off with the best fireworks display in all of Carbon Valley. z Finally, on Tuesday, August 6th join the City of Dacono and Mountain View Fire Rescue as we celebrate National Night out from 5:30-7 p.m. at Dacono City Hall. The celebration is a fun-filled event with fun, food, educational exhibits, giveaways, and safety displays, and best of all it is FREE!! National Night Out is an annual worldwide event that brings together citizens, law enforcement agencies, local officials and local businesses to increase anti-crime awareness and strengthen community partnerships. z Please don’t forget water restrictions remain in effect. z Urban Renewal: I am pleased to announce that the Firestone Urban Renewal Authority (FURA) continues to be a strong tool for economic development in our town. The board recently approved an updated agreement that will further expand the towns ability to work proactively with developers and entrepreneurs. I am particularly pleased to report that we are working in collaboration with numerous regional jurisdictions including both school districts, the weld county commissioners and the fire district. z Each year the town implements a mosquito mitigation program that is designed to reduce the mosquito population in town. We use data to drive the program and we use a spray that is targeted to mosquitos (less toxic than aspirin and table salt). For more information on our program, visit our public works page on the town website. z Due to drought conditions, Firestone has implemented a voluntary water restrictions. Historically, Firestone residents have dramatically reduced water usage through individual conservation. While I and others in the region, continue to advocate for expanded water storage, I also appreciate everyone's attention to conservation. Again, for more details on our voluntary program please visit our website. z Movies in the Park: Each year, Firestone hosts a number of family 'movies in the park'. At our most recent movie, we had hundreds of people enjoy Charlie

and the Chocolate Factory at Hart Park. Our next movie will be on June 21 at Miners Park 226 Grant. The festivities will start at 6pm. z Town Budget: I know it sounds crazy, but I want to encourage everyone to get to know your town budget. In Firestone, we value a lean and balanced municipal budget. To that end, we spend a great deal of time ensuring that our operations are as tight and cost effective as possible. While we are earning numerous 'clean audit' reports and various awards for financial stewardship - the ultimate approval must be yours. In contrast to what we see from Denver and Washington DC, our town values fiscal integrity. z I am pleased to report that I was recently named to the National Committee on US China Relations. This appointment will allow me to continue advocating for Colorado's international interests as we position our state in the global economy. z Coffee? We're now celebrating the completion of the gazebo that will enhance the concert series, and other park adventures, for years to come. z Also recently completed is the new children's splash pad. Children and adults of all ages love to watch the water shoot up and down while enjoying a fun way to keep cool during the summer. z Our Community BBQ Tour seems to be a hit so far. I've been very impressed with the turnout. We will continue this event throughout the summer. Please stop by and say hello. z Frederick in Flight, a very successful event recently, provided even more entertainment than in the past. Held last month, the event drew many people to our town. This year the event included chainsaw woodcarving. Due to the popularity of this addition, we'll be doing it again next year. There are great photos of the event. Be sure to take a look at

our Facebook page. z While celebrating is good, your Town understands the need to periodically engage in serious planning for the future. The Town of Frederick Board Retreat recently took place in Estes Park. During this time the budgeting process was begun for 2014. Input concerning the Town's recent rebranding efforts was shared and discussed as well. With fiscal policy and an identity that is unique to Frederick, we are poised for success next year and in the future. z Lastly, this Fourth of July, please stay safe and take time to celebrate America. Carbon Valley Relay For Life

Want to help fight cancer right along with the current fighters, survivors, and those who have lost loved ones? Well we have the Relay for Life of Carbon Valley coming to Firestone July 13-14 at Hart Park. The park is located on 4th St. and Jackson Ave. On Friday July 12th, they will be having a dinner at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center to honor survivors and caregivers. In addition to being treated to dinner, they will also take photos, play games, and they will receive their purple Survivor shirt to wear the next day at the relay. The festivities start at 4pm on Saturday, Opening Ceremony will start at 5pm immediately followed by the Survivor Lap, then teams will be introduced and one member from each team will be walking until 6am Sunday morning. At sundown on Saturday, they will start the Luminaria Ceremony. Events will be going on all day, from music to games, and a car bash, with the Closing Ceremony happening at 7am on Sunday.

CARBON VALLEY SURVIVORS

Jill~“It is highly stressful to realize that your own body had betrayed you by growing something that could kill you. Your

mind wanders to all of the what-ifs and if you let it get to you all you want to do is cry. What-if I never get to see my son get married and have kids of his own? – that one is the worst.” This is what Jill felt and thought after finding out she had Ovarian Cancer in September 2012. She was diagnosed with stage 1 cancer, which is the earliest you can discover cancer. Sweet and sour, it was caught earlier, but she still had cancer. Ovarian cancer is known as the silent killer, 19% of women diagnosed with ovarian cancer catch it when it is stage 1, and ovarian cancer is ranked as one of the top reproductive cancers that kill women- American Cancer Society. She anxiously awaited her surgery; she desperately wanted to free her body from the destructiveness it was producing against itself that made those what-ifs a true reality for her. What-ifs you only question when death appears to be on the horizon. The horizon is an imaginary line the recedes when you approach it, but for Jill, that line was no longer imaginary, it was real, it was solid, and it was potentially the end of her life. After Jill’s surgery she is deemed cancer free. It was successful. Jill is now in remission, she goes to the doctor for quarterly blood tests, and is still doing well. No sign of it returning, the horizon receded as she approached it bravely, daring it to stand firm. Though, the days prior to the results of her blood tests, the what-ifs still flood her thoughts. “What if the cancer comes back?” Questions and fears resurface when boldly reminded that you were once cancer ridden, and then dissipate when once again you hear the news that you are cancer free. When asked what the most motivational thing she heard during her fight and recovery, she replied “The Happy Birthday song is a cancer survivor’s Victory Song. I will rejoice for every candle I get to add to my future birthday cakes.”

Serenity~Serenity is 2 ½ years old. She has Down Syndrome, and at 20 months old she was also diagnosed with

Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). It is a blood cancer that causes the overproduction of white blood cells that inhibit the production of red blood cells. August 28, 2012, Serenity received her final diagnosis that her body was attacking itself. According to what Serenity’s doctor told her parents, children with Down Syndrome are more likely to get leukemia, but also more likely to survive it. What bitter sweet news to hear. Serenity championed through 3-5 week stays in the hospital with only being home for 1 week in between for 6 months. “85% of the time, Serenity was full of spunk,” her mother, Adell, said. The chemotherapy did not crush Serenity’s spirit, which helped her parents in their own fight with watching their daughter fight her own body. “It was quite a blow when we received the news. Since both of my parents are cancer survivors it was easier to adjust to the news,” said Adell. “But there is still nothing like having a doctor telling you that your daughter has cancer. It was a long day/night that first night. We were called by our pediatrician and told to go to Children's Hospital because they wanted to repeat the blood work because it was abnormal. He also told us that they suspected she had leukemia,” said Adell. “We were very lucky that she wasn't misdiagnosed. Her main symptoms were bruising and petechiae on her face. She had a few fevers but nothing too high. All of her symptoms had other "causes" or so I thought. She was learning to walk, so I figured she was just getting bruises from that. She was teething and so I thought that was the cause of her fevers. That last day before we got the blood work she felt crummy. I thought she just had a virus.” As of now, Serenity is in remission and received that glorious news just 3 months ago on March 11th. Her family is excited to not be so secluded. They can take Serenity places where she can enjoy and be around large groups of people where the fear of her catching a common cold is not a crippling thought. Way to go Serenity!

Daniel~Daniel is the local owner of Integrity Martial Arts, not only can he lay the smack down, but he also took out

cancer. On January 1, 2009 Daniel was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). He had flu like symptoms, a pulled muscle that wouldn’t heal, and was sleeping up to 16 hours a day. For a guy who loves his job, and being active, this was quite an odd happening. Daniel (in black to the right) is clearly a fighter in every sense of the word. He said that in his martial arts classes they teach to have an indomitable spirit. Daniel had to put what he taught to the test in the ultimate fashion, there was no quitting, or giving up. He was determined to put cancer in its place and prove he was the stronger one, that he will defeat it and come out on top. “I really took this to heart during my illness, and every day, no matter how sick I was, no matter how hopeless my situation may have seemed, I tried to keep my goal in mind: not just to survive, but to defeat cancer,” said Daniel. And, that is exactly what Daniel did, on May 15, 2009 he officially entered remission. He had a 5 month stent where he spent most of his time in the hospital receiving chemotherapy, but he was bound and determined to be the victor in the fight for his life. While in the hospital his wife, Deborah, took over teaching the martial arts classes. The students were very understanding and supportive of their teacher. Every year they support the Relay for Life and fundraise to support the cause, and their instructor. This year, they have currently raised 53% of their $5000 goal. Daniel said that the most frustrating thing he faced was not being able to do the things he normally did, such as teaching his martial arts classes. But his students stepped up and helped keep things going. They too, applied the indomitable spirit Daniel taught them to have. Today, Daniel is active in the community and teaching martial arts on a limited but regular basis. He is definitely happy to be back doing what he loves. He kept in mind during his fight “Cancer is not a death sentence, but it can be life changing. You have to believe that you can beat it and never let defeat be an option. Good Doctors really help too,” said Daniel. When asked if Daniel would have done anything different during his fight with cancer he simply replied “Eat a few less Oreos.” What wouldn’t he change about his fight? “Other than not having AML, I wouldn’t change anything, I won and Cancer lost.”

Throughout the ride, I found myself mesmerized by the views and took more photos than I care to admit. Robert, as usual, was a sponge absorbing all the information Debbi offered. While the pilots have difficulty seeing the power lines, they keep their eyes open for the power poles. I learned that the lower balloon has the right of way over the higher balloon. And watching the other balloons tells the pilot where air currents/updrafts are, as well as, their shadows show your location in relation to other balloons. The balloon does not flow haphazardly with the wind; Debbi had constant control, even lowering the balloon nearly to the ground looking for foxes. I hear they also like to skim the water’s surface but we did not experience that. One exciting aspect of this experience was meeting Marla Guzzo, one of Debbi’s chase crew. Marla was just readying for her solo flight in order to test for her pilot license. She shared it was 30 years ago that she got her first taste of ballooning and more recently she met Debbi, both experiences at the Albuquerque Balloon Festival. Since that meeting, Marla and John were first volunteers, then actual chase crew and now Marla has been Debbi’s student. Marla has her own balloon, named Butterfly Wings and the way I understand it, John will be her crew chief. No Worries!! delivered a fantastic first experience in ballooning. This type of activity makes a wonderful gift or how about an anniversary excursion for two? It was definitely a “bucket-list” item for me. They don’t have to sit… they can travel!” she says with a happy glint in her eyes. “I help them do that.” Judy and Jerry have been sharing their life together for the past 28

years and have four children, s i x grandkids with one more on the way plus one greatgrandson. Part of their busy lives include both being involved in the Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce. Judy is on the board and Jerry is on the Business After Hours committee. In their spare time they love to garden, it is a way for them to escape the stresses of life. It’s always nice to sit under one of our trees and enjoy the work we have put into our gardens. Their love for one another inspires them to grow their business, as their love continues to blossom. They look forward to helping new clients and finding new adventures through travel with some upcoming specials: There will be a nonstop flight from Denver to Montego Bay, Jamaica beginning in December and running through April 2014. However, based on a recent coffee meeting with a trustee, I decided to address something more foundational. Now, back to my recent coffee chat. As I listened, I became increasingly concerned with the discussion. I was being encouraged to consider my legacy as Mayor. I was pushed to look for a project to 'memorialize' my service. Build a grand road, Rich Marsh park or something of the like to symbolize my tenure as mayor. Clearly, serving as mayor includes time on stage, photos, ribbon cuttings, speeches and interviews. It involves participation on committees, boards and commissions. Given Firestone's success, it may seem like a glamorous position full of accolades and credit. Let me be very clear. Firestone, NOT ME, gets the credit. The members of the Town Board, Finance Committee, Planning & Zoning Commission, Parks & Trails Commission deserve the credit. Every staff member who has transformed Town Hall into an effective and efficient organization deserve the credit. All of the Police officers and Firefighters deserve the credit. All of the citizens who organize, sponsor and participate in the numerous community events throughout the year deserve the credit. The moms and dads, grandparents and children who do their part to keep Firestone safe, clean and productive deserve the credit. The business owners, builders and developers who create jobs and economic opportunity deserve the credit. All of the people who work behind the scenes on Firestone's economic development initiatives deserve the credit. The teachers, principals and school volunteers who make our schools awesome deserve the credit. The person who helped their neighbor, picked up a piece of trash or reported a crime deserves the credit. The people who contribute to Firestone, without a camera in their face or who have selfish political ambitions, deserve the credit. If, at the end of my service, people will say something like "between 2008 and 2014 Firestone thrived, the Constitution was honored, personal property rights were upheld, the town government served the citizens (not the other way around), tax rates were low, the town had a balanced budget, we resisted expansion of Federal programs, fought for common sense energy policy and supported our neighbors... but I don't remember who the mayor was" I will consider my term a success. Firestone to Host Second Annual Special Olympics Softball Tournament July 27

The Town of Firestone is excited to bring Special Olympians to its community by hosting the second annual Firestone Special Olympics Softball Tournament on July 27, 2013, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Firestone Regional Sports Complex, 6805 Tilbury Ave. This tournament will host numerous teams from the Special Olympics Colorado Northeast Area for an athletic competition for children and adults with intellectual disabilities. With the love for pet grooming. Stephanie tried her skills out on the family poodle’s Trinket, Pixie and Taffy and their sweet little mixes Toby, Katie and Tuffy. The family pets were never quit the same after enduring multiple “grooming” sessions which often times ended with semi-bald, somewhat unrecognizable creatures; much to her mother’s dismay. That did not detour Stephanie from pursuing her dreams. At the age of 14 she walked into a small dog grooming shop in a new town they had just moved to and ask for a job. It was there at the Doggie Corral in Berthoud, Colorado were they took her under their wing and she became an apprentice. At fifty cents a hour, working after school and Saturdays, Stephanie dove in with both feet to learn everything she could about becoming a professional dog groomer. As Stephanie grew up she tried her hand at other types of jobs and had many rewarding experiences. But her heart keeps drawing her back to dog grooming. Preventative Maintenance for Decks

Because they are exposed to the elements year round we recommend maintaining your deck surface every 1 to 3 years depending upon which side of your home your deck sits and whether it is covered. Ultraviolet light from the sun constantly beating down, rain and snow sitting on your deck floor - all of these contribute to your deck looking dull and becoming weathered. Prior to re-coating inspect your deck for any loose boards, structural problems, split or rotting wood and dry rot, and replace those pieces if necessary. If your deck currently has a clear finish or a transparent or semi-transparent wood stain, then it usually needs to be cleaned with a wood deck cleaner/restorer. We use a system which includes a stain and sealer remover for exterior wood that has been previously treated or stained, a restorer that revives the natural appearance of your wood, followed by a wash if necessary. If your deck is painted and you want to repaint, is should be sanded rather than stripped. If you want your painted wood deck to be stained, then the paint will have to be stripped off the deck surface using a paint stripper, then cleaned. Most decks will need to be power washed to give a good cleaning before sanding. It is imperative your deck is sanded properly. Too much sanding can reduce the absorption of the stain or sealer; too little can effect the

appearance. Hand rails, baluster rails, outer edges of the deck floor and bottoms of handrails must be consistently sanded as well. If your wood is severely weathered it will need at least two coats of semi-transparent stain. He understands all of that, and so He provides His mercy and His compassion for us during those troubling and difficult times. We don’t like to think about it, but we know that we have done many things to hurt others. Many times we hurt others unintentionally, but then there are those times that we know of that we’ve hurt others intentionally.

Why Do We Need Protein?

Some people believe the God of the Bible is a mean God who wants to punish them for things they did, for all the mistakes they’ve made in life. But in reality, the God of the Bible is rich in handing out mercy, and who passionately wants to forgive us even though we don’t deserve His mercy or His forgiveness. We may want others to have to pay for what they have did to us, but never-the-less, Jesus Christ is willing to forgive us, and help us get through those difficult times of stress and trials and heartaches. Some people think that if they can be good enough then God will help them. But what they don’t realize is no matter what you do, you can’t get God to love you any more than He does right now. And the flip side of that is you can’t get God to love you any less than He does right now. His love for you is unconditional and never ever changes. He loves you just the way you are. You are so precious to Him! And so, the mercy that God offers you has nothing to do with you having to earn it or you trying to be good enough in order to receive it. Mercy is just that, mercy. It is undeserving and unwarranted, and is freely yours by the Savior who offers to help you in your time of need. He also has hopeful expectation that as He has mercy upon you, that you in turn will extend that same mercy to others! a “spark”, an idea that seems so foreign. This idea of fitness may seem out of reach, unattainable, and down right scary. The way to make it a reality is to plan. When I first started my transformation, I actually made a plan with my neighbor that we would meet up to ride our bikes at 9 p.m. at night. I followed through with that plan for three months. After I knew that I was successful at being consistent with that plan, I created another plan that involved going to the gym Monday through Friday at 9 a.m. I stuck to that plan as closely as I could with the exception of sick kids, or other appointments that I had to plan for. By keeping a consistent schedule, I was able to lose over 100 pounds in two years. I still follow a consistent schedule to the best of my ability to keep myself accountable. The first step in creating a change is to write down on paper what this goal looks like. Define what it means to you and write down why it is so important for you to achieve it. Outline each segment of your goal. An example of this would be to state that you would like to be able to make it to the gym 3 days per week. Under this header, write down which days and times you will schedule yourself to be there. You also will need a sub header that will be your back up plan such as “If I am unable to make it to the gym on those days at those times, what will I do in place of that option?” Talk to a personal trainer or life coach to figure out how to keep you accountable. The second step is to be prepared to follow through with your plan. Make sure that you have the gym membership squared away or the home equipment that will allow you to get started, proper attire, shoes, and music. Set a date on the calendar to start your program and do not let yourself down. It is very helpful to hire a professional to help you learn how to create your new lifestyle. The final step is to stay positive and surround yourself with like-minded people who will support you on your journey to changing your lifestyle. Do not let anyone take the wind out of your sails. Misery loves company and there will be roadblocks thrown in your way, temptations, and doubts. You must learn how to ask the right people for advice and not to believe everything you hear about fitness and nutrition. There is a plethora of information out there related to getting healthy, but not all of it is sound advice. Did you know that proteins are the building blocks that grow and repair our bodies? They are also the most common material in the body! When we think of protein we typically think protein helps to build muscle. That is true, but protein is and does much more. Protein is critical for hair, skin and internal organs. Food proteins are categorized by two types: • Complete - found in animal sources (meat & eggs), dairy and soy contain essential amino acids. • Incomplete – found in plant foods such as grains, seeds, nuts, beans and vegetables contain a varying but limited array of amino acids. A balanced meal brings with it all the building blocks (amino acids) to produce a complete protein. I am talking about “real” food here, not prepackaged chemicals. This week, like most weeks, I traveled front range Colorado counting and estimating Prairie Dog mitigation jobs for ranches, farms and municipalities. GPS is a magnificent tool I use daily to determine acreage and sometimes density of certain Prairie Dog colonies. Just yesterday I observed several sites for a large rancher who has property across El Paso, Elbert and Douglas counties. This morning, using GPS, I began my estimating process on four different sites on the ranches, three were small infestations but the fourth is vast. The observation of this vast colony is as follows: The satellite image was dated October of 2011. It showed the colony size to be three acres and I estimated conservatively forty five burrows per acre or one hundred and thirty five burrows. Yesterday I observed burrow density at seventy five to eighty burrows per acre and here’s the kicker… the colony has grown to encompass seventy acres! In one year and eight months the colony size grew from one hundred and thirty five burrows to over five thousand burrows. In dollars and cents, terms of mitigation, the number grew from four hundred and fifty dollars to over seventeen thousand dollars. I would submit, in my experience, that this is an extreme circumstance. Two things to contemplate here; First, even if you cut these numbers in half, they are catastrophic in population growth, cost of mitigation and loss of vegetation. Second, it motivated me enough to write this note. You Know it’s a Great Time to Sell Your Home - But Where Do You Start?

Selling your home can be one of the largest financial decisions you will make in your lifetime. Most sellers want to sell quickly at a price that meets their financial needs. A "well-polished" house appeals to more buyers and will sell faster and for a higher price. Potential buyers will be scrutinizing many things about your home and judging it as to whether or not it is a good fit for them. Try to view your home through the eyes of a potential buyer. Be objective and be honest. The more people your home appeals to, the better your chance of meeting your goals. Buyers feel more comfortable purchasing a well-cared for home. If what they can see is maintained, what they can't see has probably also been maintained. Here are a few recommendations for preparing your home for sale. How Much Should You Spend In preparing your home for sale, don’t spend a large amount of money. Buyers may be impressed by a brand new roof, but they aren't likely to give you enough extra money to pay for it. There is a big difference between making minor and inexpensive "polishes" and "touch-ups" to your house, such as putting new knobs on cabinets and a fresh coat of neutral paint in the living room, and doing extensive and costly renovations, like installing a new kitchen. Exterior: When preparing to put your home up for sale, your first concern is the home's exterior. First impressions are critical! If the outside or "curb appeal" looks good, people will want to see what's on the inside. Mowing the lawn, pruning and weeding cost nothing, but can make a big difference by looking kept up and cared for. Be sure your front door area has a "Welcome" feeling. A fresh coat of paint on the front door looks great and make sure it is free of squeaks and functions properly. Besides front door paint, you can also add a punch of color with flowers, chair cushions, or a welcome mat. Inspect the foundation, steps, walkways, walls, doors, windows, patios for cracks and crumbling and also peeling paint. Repair as needed and revive anything looking worn with a fresh coat of paint or stain. Clean and align gutters, inspect and clean the chimney, repair and replace loose or damaged roof shingles along with siding and caulking. Store RVs, boats, ATV’s and extra vehicles elsewhere while the house is on the market. Interior: The interior of your house should be bright and as fresh as possible. It is essential for it to be clean and odor free. Making sure that all cosmetic defects are repaired before showing your house can help you save time by not losing a buyer over a small repair. A fresh coat of paint does wonders for the appearance of a home. If you have bold colors on your walls, consider changing to neutral colors such as beige or tan. Fix anything that might indicate a maintenance problem, such as cracked windows, holes in the wall, cracked tiles, broken molding or stained ceilings. Replace all burned out light bulbs; replace bulbs in dark areas with higher wattage. Repair any leaky faucets and running toilets. Clear away all clutter. Avoid using your garage, attic, or basement to store these extra things as these areas also need to have the impression of space. Remove personal photos. Not only do personal photos prohibit a potential buyer from feeling like it is their home, it is also safer to not have faces of your children on the walls. Clean all counters, surfaces and areas of your home thoroughly. Steam clean carpets to eliminate stains and any Haircuts pet odors that may be lurking (enlist the help of a neighbor or Neck Shaves friend for a “sniff” test). Cleaning windows inside and out can be one step that people forget, but after the winter months, it’s Mustache/Beard Trim imperative to make the house look as clean as possible. The 27th Annual Frank’s Ride for Children Poker Run Raises Over $30,000 for Make-A-Wish® Colorado Northern Colorado motorcycle tradition surpasses $500,000 total donation mark Over 900 motorcycle riders and onlookers participated in the 27th annual Frank’s Ride for Children on May 19 in support of Make-A-Wish Colorado. Frank’s Ride for Children, one of the state’s largest motorcycle poker runs, donated $25,000, surpassing the $500,000 donation mark in the 27 year history. “We are so fortunate to have the support of Frank’s Ride,” said Patti Forsythe, Director of Events at MakeA-Wish Colorado. “This is a unique fundraising event that gets the whole community involved and we are honored to be part of it.” Five wish kids and their families were in attendance and riding in side cars of some of the Frank’s Ride long-time members and Make-A-Wish supporters. The poker run began with a parade starting at The Longmont Order of the Moose Lodge and continued stops at the Derby Grill in Berthoud, the Burnout in Milliken, the Rocky Mountain Saloon in Mead, Jerry D’s in Dacono and a final stop at Anderson Farms in Erie. Riders, wish kids and supporters celebrated another successful Frank’s Ride for Children at Anderson Farms with a pig roast, raffle and live entertainment, all to benefit Make-A-Wish Colorado. “In 27 years, Frank’s Ride has been able to donate $500,000 to Make-A-Wish Colorado,” said Greg Risedorf, Chairman at Frank’s Ride for Children. “We are all so thrilled and are already planning next year’s event to be bigger and better!” Frank Aulino, the founder of this event, wanted to host an event that gathered his friends, family and local community members together for a good cause. It’s safe to say, Frank would be proud of the 27 year legacy and will continue to bring smiles to kid’s faces for many more years to come.

Challenge 4 Heroes Benefit Shoot

Do you want to have some fun, even family fun, on a Saturday in July? Enjoy shooting sporting clays? How about a pistol competition? Do you enjoy 3D archery competitions? How about all three? Do you also like helping others? Have you ever heard of Praying Hands Ranches (PHR)? PHR is a Christian, non-profit 501(c)(3) organization located in Parker, CO, and a member of PATH (Professional Association of Therapeutic Jim Bangert • 303.990.1378 Horsemanship International). By Linda Thompson There are many names for our Heavenly Father. The Trinity: The Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. My comforter, my redeemer, Prince of Peace, my Savior, a list that comes with faith and belonging to Him. My earthly father’s name was Bob. Bob and my mother Alice fell in love in high school. Everyone was going off to war, so my father and his brothers left the farm to be soldiers. Dad joined the navy. While walking the plank to join the ship he was hit by a flying metal hook in the face. This hook was intended to lift cargo and supplies onto the boat and the chain broke. His face was shattered, and in a coma. His shipmates thought he was dead, so they placed him in a body bag that would deserve honor as they buried him at sea. A miracle would allow him to wake up before that happened. A miracle or not, he was in severe pain, in the middle of a war, in the middle of the ocean. The ship doctor did everything in his power to make Dad comfortable, including morphine. Dad came back to Mom a broken and suffering man. They married while she watched this suffering through several surgeries to reconstruct his face. I was born a few years later. I know Dad loved me, but it seemed he was always gone…faraway to hospitals and eventually prison. He wrote his own prescriptions for the drugs he thought he needed to survive. When I was only nine my Mom gave up on him. I instantly noticed little girls that got to sit on their father’s laps and giggle and cuddle. There were families that went out to eat and on vacation. None of this was to be my fate. Then one day our Sunday school lesson taught us that Christ promised never to leave us or to forsake us. Since that day I have been a child of God. He is everything to me. He listens to my stories, walks with me, cares about me, provides for me, comforts me and protects me. Someday I will join Him where He will present me a mansion that he has prepared for me. What more could any girl ask for?

She has been in the retail business for over 30 years including grocery stores and convenience stores and over the years has carried the dream of owning her own place. Once Teddi started looking, she found a way to make her dream a reality. After hours spent searching the internet she found a promising lead, from Dollar services and checked it out right away. She flew to Las Vegas for a week of tips and training, gathered all her finances and family, and took the plunge. What did she create? Not just another dollar store; at Dollar Etc. you won’t find the expected. Terri has found a way to include items and jewelry from MACY’s, American Eagle Outfitters, Baby Phat, Koles, Target and Walmart, plus greeting cards and much more. And yes; just like the name of the store, it’s all for a dollar except the cards are two for one dollar. Over time, Teddi is becoming known for helping people out when they are in a bind. One of her fondest memories in when one of her regular customers shared a dream with her. This customer had recently lost her job, and mentioned to Teddi that she crocheted and hoped that one day others would see her creations. On fourteen and fifteen June, residents of the Carbon Valley and surrounding area missed a special opportunity to be entertained by The Carbon Valley Community Theater. The comedy “Dixie Swim Club” by Jones, Hope, and Wooten was skillfully directed by Cindy Garritt of Frederick. “The Dixie Swim Club” is patterned after the iconic television series “Golden Girls” and portrays five swim club members in middle age and then in their elder years as they contemplate their futures. The audience was kept in constant laughter as the scenes developed, and was given a chance for self-reflection in the final scene as the club members wrestle with their own mortality. The cast included: Darlene Byers; Janice Cochran-Young; Susan S. Cook; Cheryl Kouns and Anneke Veile. Cindy Garritt is to be commended for her flawless casting of these characters as they were on queue and always in character. Support members, Lily Byers, and Lydia Garritt, performed the scene changes quietly and quickly. The pace of the play kept the audience on edge as they wondered what would come next from the five vastly different but strangely similar club members. If Carbon Valley is to continue to bring this needed quality of entertainment to our area it is going to take support, cooperation, and unity of the three town councils to enable The Carbon Valley Community Theater to continue. This performance was of a caliber which equals many community theaters and vastly surpasses others. I have participated in and attended many theatrical productions. “Dixie Swim Club” equals many professional performances in directing and acting. If you were not there you truly missed an opportunity to set aside the hectic lives we lead, sit back and be wonderfully entertained. The Tri-Cities may not recognize it, but they have a jewel in the making! Lyle T. Naish
