Dacono's BMX Track

Home to Olympic & World Ranked Riders

By Jayden Schumacher Most adults nowadays have some knowledge about BMX racing, for they were a part of its infancy during their childhood. These adults had no idea that they were witnessing the humble beginnings of one of the fastest growing and fastest evolving sports on the planet. BMX racing was created when a couple of extreme dudes decided to mimic the crazy things they did on their dirt bikes, but on their regular bikes. Today BMX racing is a sport that is recognized and practiced worldwide. In fact, the Dacono BMX Track is home to the top two world ranked riders: Collin Hudson and Walker Finch, both 15-year-old riders. Recently, BMX racing was added to the lineup

of sports included in the Olympics and professional riders from around the world have worked hard to participate and honor their country. Make sure to read the end of the article about David Herman, pictured here. BMX racing is an extreme spectacle as well as a great family sport that is good fun for any rider or spectator. In BMX racing no one rides the bench, everybody participates with people that are the same age and same skill level as they are. And with it being a year-round sport, it is perfect for keeping in shape. This sport allows you to develop your sportsmanship and form lasting bonds with the riders and families that you get to know over the years. Plus, you can climb the ranks as far as you want to. BMX racing has no age limits or requirements, just bring your bike and safety gear to the track and have a blast. You might be asking, where? The Tri-Town area has its very own BMX racing community. Located in Dacono, the Dacono BMX track has one of the largest rider bases of any track in Colorado and receives riders from hundreds of miles around. The Dacono BMX track even hosted a series of National races. Dacono BMX is even

Brad Stelk Wins State Safety Award

Carbon Valley resident, Brad Stelk of Firestone, was the recipient of the Colorado Safety Award at the DoubleTree Hotel in May where a record 260 people showed up. This was an event to celebrate safety with the Colorado Motor Carriers Association (CMCA) Safety Management Council. Where thousands were nominated, Stelk was honored above all when he won the Safety Award in the category of Hourly Driver of the Year. Stelk has driven for Shamrock Foods for 28 years. To win this prestigious award, the driver must move up in the ranks in many different areas. A commercial truck driver must maintain years of safe driving records as well as safety at the company of employment. On top of that, the CMCA looks at the driver’s record as a good Samaritan while on the road. When driving in Wyoming, Stelk was the first on the scene of a bad accident in Cheyenne and assisted in the emergency situation. Stelk has an exemplary driving record which he practices regularly as he prepares to participate in state truck rodeo competitions. Stelk won first place in the five axel class in 2011. Each of these experiences brought Stelk to the forefront but it started when the Safety Manager at Shamrock nominated Stelk for the Hourly Driver of the Month in March 2011. After that, the Colorado State Patrol chose Stelk for the Hourly Driver of the Year. Congratulations Brad Stelk for your ongoing safety efforts as a safe commercial truck driver.

“In a chronically leaking boat, energy devoted to changing vessels is more productive than energy devoted to patching leaks. -Warren Buffett

What’s On My Mind Kelly Martindale, Publisher

With a Little Help From My Friends This last week I was able to spend a lot of time with my granddaughter, Annah. Over the holiday weekend she said one phrase over and over. Whether she was tying her shoes, trying to carry her fishing gear or clean up after herself, she’d say, “Need a little help here.â€? I can’t begin to imagine how many times in my life I’ve thought to myself, I sure could use some help. It was especially difficult when I was a single mom, first with two children and then with four. A person gets spread very thin when she’s trying to be “it allâ€? for the kids; mom, dad, chauffeur, provider, caregiver, etc. I used to compare myself to taffy‌stretched and pulled in every direction. I always had faith that everything would work out, though. And each experience, thus far, has in one way or another worked itself out. Faith gave me hope; hope for a better future and healing from the past. With the exception of two or three years of my life, I’ve always been optimistic, even when it seemed I was alone in a cruel, dark world. My darkest times weren’t because of the accidental deaths of two of my kids but more recently when I allowed everything in my life to pile up on me and bury me. I started drinking to escape my life. I didn’t let anybody help me and I made the choice to isolate myself from those who cared. Those times were a desolate contrast to the times I accepted help. For many reading this, it might seem unbelievable that I keep myself shut off from people. I write about so much of my life, sharing my soul with you, that I come across as open, friendly and outgoing. While I can be those things, I am much more the loner. However, I’ve come to realize there are things I want to experience in the time I have left on this earth. I want to write another book and have more articles published in magazines again. I want to be healthy and fit, not just physically but also spiritually. Through the

And to achieve physical health you, because as Annah so eloquently puts it, I’ve sought the help of Nextera Healthcare and “Need a little help here!â€? am striving to get my body to function properly from the inside out. Bits & Pieces of Carbon Valley lllley Annual Yard Sale at Daylight Donuts

Find a treasure, or make some extra cash! Fifteen 10x10 spaces are available for only $5 each. The parking lot at Dacono shopping center is a great visible location, and with several sellers in one place, people are excited to come shop! This year we will also have a bounce house! Send the kids to jump while you shop! This event started 8 years ago when Dacono was paving their streets and residents found it hard to have a yard sale with the streets blocked and torn up. Daylight Donuts offered part of their parking lot for some of these residents, and it worked so well that the annual event was born! Come to shop, or call now to rent your space on June 30th, 8am to 2pm. For more information, call Linda at Daylight at 303-833-2009.

Fireworks Safety

Fireworks are a traditional part of our celebration of Independence Day on July 4th. For many of us, the 4th of July just isn't complete without sparklers and the chorus of ooh's and aah's when it finally gets dark and the big show begins. But the celebration is ruined when careless and inappropriate use of fireworks results in injury. According to the US Consumer Products Safety Commission, 8500 people in the US are treated each year for fireworks-related injuries. Seven out of every 100 people injured from fireworks have to be hospitalized. The estimated annual cost of fireworks-related injuries in the US: $100 million dollars.

Fireworks Safety Tips

The best way to prevent fireworks-related injuries is to leave fireworks displays to the trained professionals. But for those who participate, the US Consumer Products Safety Commission and the National Council on Fireworks Safety have issued these tips: Do not let children under 14 use fireworks and supervise older children. Only buy from reliable fireworks sellers; read and follow all the warnings and instructions. Use fireworks outdoors only; keep them away from houses and flammable materials. Have a bucket of water nearby. DO NOT try to re-light or handle malfunctioning fireworks. Soak them in water and throw them away. Be sure other people are a safe distance away before lighting fireworks. Never ignite fireworks in a container -- especially glass or metal. Store fireworks in a cool, dry place according to their specific storage instructions. Do not wear loose clothing near a fire or while using fireworks. Sparklers need to be handled carefully too: they burn at more than 1000 degrees F. Light them one at a time at arm's length. Always wear gloves while holding a sparkler, and never give one to a child under 5 years of age. Educate children (of all ages) about the dangers of fireworks and teach them to practice safety at all times. Remember to always properly dispose of waste created from fireworks and that fireworks are illegal in the Town limits of Frederick and Firestone. For further information please contact the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District at 303-833-2742 or www.fffd.us.

For more information on this and all the other Firestone events, visit the town website www.ci.firestone.co.us and stay in touch with the town via facebook.  Firestone is proud to host this years Special Olympics Softball Tournament in June. Come out to the Firestone Sports Complex and cheer on these fantastic athletes. We are honored to host them here in Firestone.  One of the hallmark events in the Carbon Valley is the Relay For Life. Year after year, area residents come together in the fight against cancer. Please join the effort by sponsoring a team and/or participating in the Relay which is in July. In addition to fighting this terrible disease, you will be a part of a tremendous community event.  The Firestone Movies In The Park season is ready for another great summer. Check the Town website for dates/times and join us for a season full of fantastic movies.  As the school year comes to a close, I want to congratulate our area students, teachers and administrators on another great year. I am proud of the fact that Firestone supports ALL of our local schools, regardless of which zip code we live in or where each family chooses to send their children. Enjoy your summer!  Firestone continues to pursue a number of economic development opportunities. For example, In June I will join a number of regional leaders at the grand opening of a natural gas distribution facility here in Firestone. This is yet another example of how Firestone is participating in the advancement of common sense energy development as well as enhancing our local economy.  Do you want to share ideas or ask questions over coffee with the Mayor? Email me at cauer@ci.firestone.co.us. My schedule is getting very crowded, but I will do my best to carve out time to visit with you.

CHAD AUER, MAYOR OF FIRESTONE

 We are into the typical Colorado weather, cool nights which are great for sleeping and hot days. This is also graduation time and a BIG congratulations to all the high school and college graduates. May your future be bright, healthy and productive. A quick look at the calendar is in order. I hope you have noticed the Scavenger Hunt signs around town. This is to remind you that the Town Of Mead Business Fair and Scavenger hunt will be held at the town park on June 9 from 11 am to 4 pm. This is to encourage folks to get to know our businesses and their locations. Donated prizes will be given to those who obtain the most business cards from the various businesses in our community . At this time we have 43 local businesses signed up to tell you who they are and what they can provide to you in terms of products and services.  Yes, it is construction season again and it is Main Streets turn to have some badly needed improvements accomplished. When it is finished you will see a greatly improved street with curbs and gutters, sidewalks on both sides and hidden underneath all of that will be the continuation of the storm drainage work that we accomplished last year on Third Street. You may see some additional construction in town but that will hinge on fitting it into the budget and the contractor bid prices. You will notice that there are some landscaping improvements on Welker across from the Post Office. That work is being accomplished by our Public Works Department using Downtown Revitalization funds.  Last month we invited the winners of the Mead Community Day Scholarship to the Town Trustees meeting and presented them with a “suitable to frame” check. This event was well attended by both proud parents and grandparents and was an outstanding event. I was also fortunate to have received a letter from the scholarship committee that evaluated the applications. Richard Macomber

Three sentences in this letter are important to repeat and they are “It was a pleasure once again to meet with your scholarship applicants. Mead has grown outstanding and delightful youngsters. The parents are to be applauded.”  Last month we also accepted the application of Robert Acker to join the volunteer Open Space committee. You may remember Bob as a former Trustee and is clearly demonstrating his community spirit. There are still openings on some of the volunteer committees such as Open Space, Planning Commission, Downtown Revitalization and Parks and Recreation. This is a great way to serve your community and help shape the future of it.  The Town Summer Recreation program is still accepting applications and will start it’s first session shortly. This is a wonderful program and has received great praise from past attendees and their parents. The weekend of June 2-3 was celebrated by the Department of Wildlife as a “free” fishing weekend, which basically means you don’t need a fishing license on those days. That is the reason the volunteer Parks and Recreation Committee and the Department of Wildlife schedule the annual Mead Fishing Derby so the parents can join the children in experiencing the family fishing experience. Once again this was very well attended and the participants were treated to some fishing education, lunch and the opportunity to hook one of the many trout that are stocked in the ponds. Thank you to all of the volunteers and the DOW for this event.  As always, if you have a thought, idea or wish to express an opinion you are welcome to either come to one of the semi-monthly Board meetings, give me a call or discuss it with one of your Trustees. Your input is important to us. Please watch out for the children as they play outdoors and chase that stray ball into the street. Please keep our troops in your prayers no matter where they are stationed or their assignment. Last month was both Veterans Day and Memorial Day.

RICHARD MACOMBER, MAYOR OF MEAD

the City will temporarily reduce the amount of certain fees associated with issuing residential building permits during the entire month of June. This includes application fees, plan review and inspection fees. The fee reduction applies towards the alteration, repair or improvement of existing residential structures and the erection, alteration, repair or improvement of structures associated with existing homes, such as garages, additions, carports, sheds and fences. Payment of use tax still applies. All necessary permits must be obtained prior to beginning your project. As always, any work completed without a building permit is subject to double permit fees. Work authorized under the permit must be completed by no later than September 30, 2012, otherwise all applicable fees, including the full building permit fee and plan review fees and inspection fees, shall be paid. Our Council recently met with the Thornton City Council and the  Boards of the Towns of Firestone and Frederick to become acquainted and learn about their water system and need to bring their water from northern Colorado for use in Thornton as development occurs. Our approach to regional planning for future growth was discussed and Dacono will continue to explore all available options to plan for development of our planning area, including the Northern Integrated Supply Project (NISP).  The Carbon Valley Music Festival presented by the City of Dacono will take place on Saturday, August 4 at Centennial Field, next to the big blue water tower. Once again, Cinch Jeans & Shirts will be sponsoring the impressive fireworks this year. Be sure to get there early for a good seat on the field. CHARLES SIGMAN, MAYOR OF DACONO  The Carbon Valley Veterans Memorial Park Committee met on May 15 at the Tri-Town Senior Center in Frederick and the firm helping Charles Sigman with the project, PRiDiAN Design Group, presented examples of different types of veterans memorials. A lively discussion followed as those in attendance offered their thoughts on the layout of the site. Committee members signed up for several subcommittees and the design committee will be meeting with PRiDiAN Design Group in late May or early June. The June meeting of the entire group will be rescheduled as a conflict exists during the third week of June. For more information, visit the web site for the project at: www. carbonvalleyveteransmemorialpark.org  The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) approved Dacono’s 2nd entry monument sign, which will be located near the East Frontage Rd. and Summit Blvd. (WCR 8). Just like the one at Colorado Blvd. & SH 52, this sign will be seen by thousands of visitors every weekend that go to Colorado National Speedway, Blitz Paintball and IMI Motorsports… part of Dacono’s Extreme Sports businesses. The sign is expected to be completed later this summer. And speaking of Extreme Sports, we’re just beginning an  exciting summer campaign to attract visitors to Dacono’s Extreme Sports businesses with the help of Yellow House Design in Erie.  National Trails Day is on Saturday June 2, and the City is coordinating a day of city-wide beautification by volunteers to clean-up public rights-of-way & the St. Vrain Legacy Trail. It’s called “Team Up to Clean Up Dacono” and will be the 2nd annual event. Team-up with a friend, family member or service club and meet at City Hall at 9:00a for refreshments, a brief safety orientation, and team assignments. We will clean-up until approximately noon. All materials will be provided, please bring your own gloves. Closed-toe shoes are recommended. If you would like to volunteer, please send me an email (CSigman@cityofdacono.com) or leave me a message at 303.833.2317 x126.  This summer, the New Horizon Christian Church, in partnership with the Weld Food Bank, is sponsoring a Food 4 Kids Café. Drop by Monday through Friday between 11:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. and get a free lunch. This offer is available only to kids 18 years and younger. The Food 4 Kids Café lunch will be available all summer long from May 29th through August 15th. Children under 10 must be accompanied by an adult. The New Horizon Christian Church is located at 530 Cherry Street in Dacono. Don’t forget about Wednesday Rewards (part of Dacono Library Summer Reading Program) at the New Horizon Christian Church from 11:30-1:00 p.m. This is a free drop in program and children under 10 years old must be accompanied by an adult, older sibling, or caregiver.  Don’t forget that during the month of June, the City of Dacono is offering “Almost Free Building Permits”. In an effort to encourage residents of Dacono to upgrade and improve their residential properties,

 Two words shape my thinking as Mayor of Frederick – community and democracy.  As Mayor, I strive to honor Tony Carey both words, and live up to their ideals.  Community is the bedrock of Frederick. Community is who we are and the driving force behind what we will be.  Frederick enjoys a remarkable economic environment. Small businesses are at our core. Larger businesses make equal contributions to our dynamic development. Our welcoming approach sets Frederick apart as a thriving community on the Front Range. As a small businessman, I fully appreciate the effort, planning, creative thinking, and stress that go into achieving success. I respect the democratic values underlying the successes of all businesses, large and small.  My fellow Board members and I are working to preserve those values, to ensure Frederick’s community spirit respects and protects a flexible environment affording business opportunities to thrive without diminishing our quality of life.  We’re giving full attention to sustaining Frederick’s wonderful social community. Frederick’s lifestyle didn’t happen. It has grown and evolved because of citizen participation. As citizens, we have not accepted what is, we have had the vision to see what could be. We don’t wait for things to happen, we implement strategic plans to make things happen. This foundation continues as the Board prepares for its first retreat. The focus will be creating a cohesive unit committed to the betterment of the community while embracing the diversity which exists. We will also develop measurable and achievable goals within our financial condition without compromising long-term sustainability. The goals we are setting today shape Frederick’s tomorrow.  The principles of democracy are strongest at the local level. Citizen input has the greatest impact when it’s given directly to those elected to represent you. I was elected Mayor to represent the best interests of all Frederick citizens, and I take that seriously. I want to hear how you feel and what you think about issues on our agenda. Accordingly, our retreat will create a progressive communication plan to reach out to you as citizens and businesses in the community.  As your Mayor, I encourage everyone to get involved in community and democracy. Be informed. Let me and your other elected officials know how we’re doing and what’s on your mind. Join your thoughts and voices with ours. Little is accomplished when we act in isolation. Yet when all voices are heard, Frederick’s best is yet to come.

Top Computer Cleanup Mistakes

There is a major misconception amongst non-technical computer users that deleting files from your computer will somehow improve the performance. A computer that has 100 data files will run no faster than a computer that has 10,000 data files stored on it purely based on the number of files. The only impact that a large volume of files will have on a computer is that it will fill up your computer's hard drive. Think of it like your refrigerator; it stores the ingredients that you use for cooking, but has little to do with how fast you can prepare a meal. If your computer's hard drive is getting close to full, then getting the 'urge to purge' makes sense but don't expect any tangible performance gain (unless your hard drive is completely full and out of operating space). You can easily check to see how full your hard drive is by opening up My Computer and rightclicking on the C: drive, then selecting Properties. A pie chart should come up with the blue section representing your data and the purple section representing your free space. If the purple section is a tiny sliver, then it's time to start removing unneeded items; if not, don't get too concerned about deleting old files. The quickest way to free up large quantities of disk space is to uninstall unnecessary programs, which take up lots more space than documents and spreadsheets. Pictures, music and especially video files are the most common 'data' files that can take up significant space only if you have large quantities Some say, “It doesn’t make a dime’s worth of difference who you vote for; they’re of them. all the same.â€? Bits & Pieces from pg. 3 RE/MAX Ranks Highest in Customer Satisfaction

Results from the J.D. Power and Associates 2011 Home Buyer/Seller StudySM, recognize RE/MAX for providing the highest overall consumer satisfaction for both home buyers and home sellers. In last year’s study, two different companies ranked the highest in each category, but this year home buyers and sellers both rated RE/MAX the highest. This is the fourth annual study of home buyer and seller satisfaction with the largest national real estate companies, conducted by J.D. Power and Associates. For the home buying experience, three factors were considered: agent/salesperson, office and a variety of additional services. Four factors were examined for the home-selling experience: agent/salesperson, marketing, office and a variety of additional services. If you have home selling or buying needs, contact your local tri-town RE/MAX agent, Cindy Campbell, for a free market analysis or a list of homes currently on the market for purchase. New Tennis Court Poured at Onorato Park

Onorato Park in Old Town Firestone saw its first improvements this year on April 24, 2012, when the concrete was poured for a new tennis court. The tennis court is part of a multi-phase improvement plan for the park. Construction started on the court in mid-April when workers started the surveying, demolition work and bringing in fill dirt. Reinforcing steel for the slab was installed prior to the concrete pour. Residents from Old Town made their way to the park to watch 10 trucks deliver 100 yards of concrete, many of which noting their approval of Firestone making improvements to the oldest park in the town. Fencing was installed on May 1. For the next three weeks, the concrete will cure before contractors put down the surface coatings, install the net and benches, and install the wind screen. According to Firestone Engineer Dave Lindsay, construction on the tennis court should be completed by late May. Other planned improvements for 2012 will include a sidewalk, a drinking fountain and landscaping. The Parks, Trails and Recreation Advisory Board will be reviewing the master plan for Onorato Park for any future improvements and will make recommendations to the Board of Trustees for their budget process.

Community Banking 101 – Who is Your Community Bank?

ITH ELECTRIC REMOTE DOOR & MAN DOOR EASY ANYTIME ACCESS

There is no official definition in Webster’s dictionary of what a community bank is, so allow me to share with you some statistics and describe informally what it is and what it means to our communities. According to the FDIC data at the end of 2011 there were 7,357 banking institutions, down from 15,158 in 1990. Community banks constitute 97% of all bank institutions; however, they make up only 28% of the nation’s deposits. Believe it or not, even with the financial crisis and the perception that regulators would not allow these institutions to fail because of their size – the big institutions continue getting bigger! On the flip side community banks are the primary source of lending across the country for small business and farms even though they compose just 21 percent of the banking industry by assets. A quick glance at the community bank value proposition: • Small community banks tend to focus on the needs of their local market and families, they’re committed to build on relationships thereby providing stability and limiting risk versus focusing on large corporations

Huge Quiet Indoor Arena Close to Dacona-Frederick 30+ Years Experience Hands-on Help • Community banks direct most of their loans to the neighborhoods where their depositors live and work, helping to keep local communities vibrant and growing • Community bank officers are typically involved in local community affairs, where they are invested physically and emotionally. Officers are accessible to their customers on-site • Community banks are generally more willing to consider character, family history, individual circumstances and the individuals overall banking relationship when making credit decisions • Community banks offer flexible decision-making on business loans because decisions are made locally • Research has shown average fees for checking accounts and other depository services are lower at community banks than at large intuitions Remember, community banks are themselves small businesses, they understand the need of small-business owners. Their core concern is lending to small businesses and farms where they themselves live and work and not corporate America. My advice to local readers is simple – in making your banking choices consider the broader mission of community banks which has demonstrated time and time again a track record of being engaged beyond just the financial interests in the community. An effective way to judge a bank is to actually go visit the bank and speak to their management about their focus and how that will meet your financial needs. Counting Down-Short 3 Months Til That Place Opens!

We at Glacier Park Storage at I-25/Hwy 52 know all too well that packing and moving can be a horrible headache if not planned out correctly. Moving is never easy but it doesn’t have to be a nightmare. Proper planning and packing will assure your things arrive unharmed, save time and confusion. Don’t wait until the day of the move to pack all your boxes. Trying to pack and load at the same time just creates chaos, creates stress with your coworkers and almost promises that items will be damaged, forgotten or lost. Having boxes packed, stacked and waiting when the truck arrives will expedite your move. Use standard sized boxes and label them with room and contents on the side. Be kind to your loaders. Use smaller to medium boxes for the heavy items. If moving your items to storage, uniform box sizes will make stacking easier and make best use of room. Stack them with the label showing. Take advantage of space. Once dressers and desks are moved into storage, fill the drawers with smaller items. Some sofas can be stood up on end to make a smaller footprint. If you are storing for a longer period you may want to use furniture pads, dust and mattress covers to keep furniture clean and dust free. Reserve your truck and storage early. Last minute walk-ins can mean no availability and a forced change of plans, especially at the end of any month. Remember Glacier Park Storage has storage space available and all your packing supply needs. We also rent U-haul trucks and trailers. Pat, Joan and David at Glacier Park Storage will try to make the move as painless as possible. For more info please call 303.833.4445 or stop by at 3759 Imperial Street just behind Subway and Starbucks by McDonalds at Hwy 52 and I-25.

Boost Your Metabolism and Burn More Fat

Metabolism is the key to weight loss, and all you need to know is the higher your metabolism, the more calories you'll burn. How do you get a higher metabolism? Your metabolic rate is influenced by your genetics, but exercising and watching what foods you The Social Media Whisperer eat can really boost your metabolism into high speed. Face on Facebook Not all exercises are created equal when it comes to boosting your metabolism, so you must choose the best ones to obtain this goal. You're looking for exercises that do three things: burn calories during the workout, burn additional calories directly after the workout, and exercises that increase lean muscle mass which will then help you burn more calories and boost your metabolism. When you do an endurance workout that has a steady speed throughout, such as cardio machines for 45 minutes plus, you are burning calories, but you're not going to get the burning of calories afterwards or building of muscle mass, so this only meets one requirement and is not the best choice to boost your metabolism. Happy 2nd Birthday, Interval Training is a type of cardio workout where you Dante, on June 18th! push yourself at a high intensity for a short period of time

and then recover at a slower intensity of exercise. This will help you burn calories during the workout as well as give you burning of additional calories after your workout. Strength Training or lifting weights is one of the best choices for boosting your metabolism because it helps you burn calories during and after your workout, and it helps increase your lean muscle mass. Time For Change Personal Training uses a combo of Strength Training and Interval Training to help you boost your metabolism big time and burn more body fat. Don't waste your time working out if you're going to miss the crucial step of feeding yourself the right foods. A good workout and healthy diet go hand in hand, so you'll need a variety in your healthy diet. The recommended carbohydrate intake for adults is 50-70% of total caloric intake (stick with only complex carbohydrates), 15-30% for protein, and 10-30% for lipids (good fats and oils). Also, aim for an intake of 25 grams of fiber per day, and at a minimum, drink half of your body weight in ounces of water daily. Diving in Head-First

By Trish Rife The Carbon Valley Recreation Center (CVRC) has recently brought on two new employees to help restructure their current aquatics department. Elizabeth Krieg, 27, now serves as the CVRC’s aquatics director. Kayla Stonehouse has been brought on as the new coordinator for the department. Krieg began on May 1, 2012, and Stonehouse began her new position during the week of spring break. According to Renee Witty, CVRC’s executive director, the two were brought on board with the focus of bringing a heightened level of knowledge to their current staff as well as ensuring the residents of the Carbon Valley have a most enjoyable experience while utilizing and enjoying the aquatics department through their management restructure.

ELIZABETH KRIEG

Krieg and her fiancé met while working at a pool, and they are currently engaged with a destination wedding planned for September. True to her love for aquatics, they will be getting married on the beach. Krieg brings with her a Bachelor of Arts degree from CU, as well as twelve years of working in aquatics from surrounding areas across the Front Range including Boulder, Superior, Lafayette, Longmont, and Erie. Krieg’s focus will be geared toward revamping the entire aquatics department, and she will oversee the retraining the lifeguards, making sure to reinforce their knowledge and skills including CPR and lifesaving skills. She has a desire to rebuild the swim lesson program and to help new people feel comfortable with enrolling any or all members of their family. The new director says that she desires for the CVRC to meet or exceed the same standards as the recreation centers located in Longmont and Erie. But what if you’re afraid of the water, you ask? Krieg’s personal goal is to help children and adults alike to overcome their fear. “One of the main goals isn’t just to make them excellent swimmers – not everyone will be Olympic swimmers - but to help them overcome their fear and be comfortable and have fun,” says Krieg. “I want to build up the swim lesson program and revamp it. I want it to be competitive with swim lessons in the area. I want people to look at it and think, ‘That’s how I want our swim lessons to be.’ I want it to be one that other rec centers strive to be like.” Registration for swimming lessons opens on May 18 and lessons begin June 4. The

The Country Music Project

changes from Krieg’s oversight will begin to be implemented in upcoming months.

KAYLA STONEHOUSE

Now with six years of aquatics experience, Stonehouse is a graduate of University of Wisconsin La Crosse, having earned a degree in recreation management. Her previous experience includes working for the City of Golden (CO), the City of La Crosse (Wisconsin), and the City of St. Cloud (Minnesota). She served her internship while at the City of Golden. Stonehouse is pleased with her new staff members that she will work alongside. “They [CVRC] have a great staff for me to work with, and I’m excited to see what this place can become.” The CVRC is happy to have both ladies now on board. For readers who may be skeptical regarding swimming lessons, and as one who enrolled my daughter for swimming lessons at the CVRC when she was a 9-year-old, I can personally vouch for the value that benefits participants in programs such as the ones offered at the CVRC. Prior to her lessons, my daughter was extremely fearful of water. It did take a couple of lessons for her to begin to relax and before I knew it, she was actually having fun! She successfully completed Level 1 swim lessons and I eagerly signed her up for Level 2 prior to leaving for vacation. While on vacation, something “clicked.” She spent most of her time at the pool and even ended up doing handstands in the water, staying under as long as possible. We came home to begin Level 2, but I informed the instructor what happened on our vacation and asked for them to test her skill level. They immediately bumped her to Level 5 before she could even begin Level 2. We had originally signed her up for lessons with the hopes of preparing her for an upcoming cruise. While on our cruise, she was so comfortable with the water that she and I parasailed together, “dangling” 600 feet above the ocean in St. Thomas, and I have photos of her smiling ear to ear. Take it from me: swimming lessons at the CVRC are worth it! You cannot put a price tag on overcoming fear. Contact the CVRC at (303) 833-3660 to learn more. You may also stop in at 701 5th Street in Frederick, or visit them on the Web at www. recdistrict.com where you will find their hours listed on the home page.

"You'll Shoot Your Eye Out?"

You may remember this quote from Ralphie's mother, in "A Christmas Story" 1983. Well, I hear this from mothers who drop off their boys at GoAirheads, I hear it from mothers whose kids were invited to a Private Birthday Party at GoAirheads, and from mothers who secretly call me and ask "can they get hurt"? Okay, to all of you who want to know. Yes, they can get hurt. However, they can get hurt riding a bicycle, playing football, playing soccer, or playing basketball. They're boys! The Best Part of Spring...Maintenance?!?

We all know that our car needs to have its oil changed every 3,000 miles, but are you aware that your mechanical systems in your home can greatly benefit from preventative maintenance? For most homeowners, it is out of sight out of mind! If the unit fires up on the first hot day then they never think about it. The majority of homeowners do not schedule regular maintenance on their AC or furnace although most homeowners are dissatisfied with the performance of their system and the cost to operate it. Some facts for you to ponder: 1. According to several studies over half of all breakdowns are caused by nothing more than a dirty unit. 2. According to a 2001 university study, the average homeowner spends $32.76 more a month (imagine what it is now!) on their energy bills by not have their heating and cooling units maintained. 3. Just by having your air conditioning unit tuned up, you can expect an increase in efficiency of up to 25%!

Is Your Deck Ready for Summer?

ng

Is your deck looking dull and weathered? Because they are exposed to the elements year round you can extend the life of your decks by applying protection as needed. Ultraviolet light from the sun is constantly beating down on your deck and water and snow can sit on your deck floor for long periods of time. We recommend maintaining the surface every 1 to 3 years depending upon which side of you home your deck sits and whether it is covered. Inspect your deck for any loose boards, structural problems, split or rotting wood and dry rot, and replace those pieces if necessary prior to staining. If your deck currently has a clear finish or a transparent or semi-transparent wood stain, then it usually just needs to cleaned with a wood deck cleaner/restorer. For cleaning we like a system which includes a stain and sealer remover for exterior wood that has been previously treated or stained, a restorer that revives the natural appearance of your wood, followed by a wash if necessary. If your deck is painted and you want to repaint it, your painter will probably want to sand it rather than strip it. If you want your painted wood deck to be stained, then the paint will have to be stripped off the deck surface using a paint stripper and then cleaned. Most decks will need to be power washed to give a good cleaning before sanding. It is imperative your deck is sanded properly. Too much sanding can reduce the absorption of the stain or sealer; too little can effect the appearance. Hand rails, baluster rails, outer edges of the deck floor and bottoms of handrails must be consistently sanded as well. If your wood is severely weathered it will need at least two coats of semi-transparent stain. Sherwin Williams offers a variety of coatings for your deck depending upon appearance and durability you want: Clear - Least UV protection, best appearance of natural wood grain Toner - Durable and provides a light color that highlights wood grain Semi-Transparent Stain - Very good durability and rich pigmented color that allows the natural wood grain to show through Solid Color Stain - Covers wood blemishes and unsightly grain, offers maximum durability, Recommended for composite decking Our preference is a quality exterior semitransparent stain such as Deckscapes. Your painter can help you transform your deck into a perfect entertainment area for the summer! For more info please call Tim Zaerr at 303.678.8442, Blue Parrot Painting.

Antibiotics and the Food We Eat

I was under the impression that the FDA had banned the use of antibiotics in healthy cows, pigs and chickens. Not so according to the article. The FDA approved antibiotic use in animals in 1951, before there were any concerns about drug resistance. The only way to withdraw the all encompassing approval is through a drug-bydrug process that would take years of study and review. In 1977 the agency proposed a ban on penicillin and tetracycline in animal feed. This is where my impression was formed that they had removed antibiotics from animal feed. Sorry to say that ban was defeated. In 2000 the FDA ordered the poultry medication Baytril off the market. After 5 years of failed appeals, poultry farmers stopped using the drug. I know that Baytril is still available as I have used it for health issues in my rescued Umbrella Cockatoos. 2008 brought another limit from the FDA. Cephalosporin drugs were being used in healthy cows, pigs and chickens. This has caused the drug to be ineffective to humans. The FDA tried to ban the use of this drug but The Bush administration reversed that decision five days before it was due to take effect due to pressures from drug companies and farm animal trade groups. Why do Factory farms use antibiotics in healthy animals? This decision is based on greed as the antibiotics cause the animals to grow faster and can save about 30 percent on their feed bill. Yet, there is no consideration for the long term effect on humans or our environment. Research points to the overuse of antibiotics in animals and humans that has led to a plague of drug-resistant infections that killed more than 65,000 people in the US last year! The drug companies sold 35 million pounds of antibiotics last year and 70 percent went to farm animals. And this issue is not limited to the US alone but research shows a resurgence of diseases like malaria, tuberculosis and staph in new and more deadly forms. “The World Health Organization concluded this year that surging antibiotic resistance is one of the leading threats to human health.

Chinese Medicine Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil

In this article, I would like to provide some information about Sea Buckthorn Berry Oil. I was introduced to this fabulous oil from Herb’s Best Nutrition, herbsbestnutrition.com, in Calgary, Canada. They wrote an email offering to donate their product to the non-profit organization, Acupuncture for Veterans and their Families. AVF was very happy to received such a generous donation, especially since the oil supports healthy digestive, respiratory and urogenital systems. Sea Buckthorn Berry oil addresses problems with immune system deficienies, pain, inflammation, arthritis and stress. It is a wonderful anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant. Since Chinese medicine and acupuncture works toward these same goals, the oil and acupuncture work well together. The following information is taken from Herb’s Best Nutrition’s web site, and following this is a testimonial: Sea Buckthorn is one of the most nutrient dense fruit in the world with over 190 phytonutrients and active ingredients. The berries contain large amount of flavonoids, plant lipids, vitamins, and minerals. Many studies also show that Sea Buckthorn promote tissue regeneration and antiinflammatory action in the skin, hair and mucosa of internal organs; hence, protecting the health of respiratory, digestive and urogenital tract. It is also the only plant source that

If we purchase our food from sources we do not know, we have no way of knowing how much antibiotics are in the food or if the animal has developed germs that are immune to antibiotics. provides omega 3, 6, 7 and 9 fatty acids. The vitamin C value virtually tops among all the fruits we commonly consume. I just wanted to take a minute and let you know how it’s going since you put me on the Sea Buckthorn Berry oil. The flavor is such that I don’t sprinkle it on ice cream or use it as a coffee flavoring but there are several benefits that I am thrilled with. I am a mechanic by trade and as such I rotate my wrist repeatedly against strong resistance when using a wrench. After work I had been experiencing pain and burning in the wrist even when at rest. I have noticed lately that that pain has diminished considerably and now doesn’t disrupt my sleep as it had prior to using the oil. Several years ago I had my right hip replaced. Recently I started to have some pain in my other hip. The pain was like what I was experiencing when my right hip started to go bad. Today I had my left hip x-rayed and found that the damage is almost as bad as the damage was to my hip when it was replaced. Eventually I will have to get the left hip replaced but I feel that will be quite some time in the future because of the Buckthorn oil. Now I am walking with very little pain which is very manageable as long as I don’t get too tired. This alone makes the taste of the oil tolerable. Thank you for suggesting it because it has made a world of difference in my life. Sincerely: Butch 02/12 For more information about Sea Buckthorn, the following sites were my favorites: http://seabuckthorninfo. net and transformyourhealth.com. My name is Loni Good. I’ve lived in the TriTown area for 8 years. I live here with my husband and 3 boys. I was born in Nebraska, but graduated high school in Illinois where I played softball and volleyball although I was not very athletic. I have a Chemistry degree from Doane College in Nebraska. That is where I met my husband, Ben. We decided to come to Colorado for my husband to pursue his graduate degree and so I took a job working for a local bank. While the bank was not where my heart was, it was very convenient and accommodating for the growing family that we were starting. Now, here is the other side of my story. I was at my heaviest on my wedding day. That’s not a great memory to have. After getting married, I had 3 kids within 4 years. Although I was exercising in between each pregnancy, I just wasn’t getting where I wanted to be. Shortly, after having my 2nd child, I joined a 24hr gym. After I got off work each night at approximately 2 AM, I would hit the gym. I did this routinely until the gym went out of business. After my 3rd child, I considered joining the local Recreation Center; but, they did not provide child care for a child as young as mine. So, I started working out at home using the ever popular P90X program. I was successful with this program and eventually became a Beachbody coach. Since then, I have lost 60lbs from my weight on my wedding day and I am currently in the best shape of my life; but, I’m not done yet. At this point, I thought to myself, “How great would it be to make this hobby my work? So, that’s what I did. I got certified in TurboKickŽ and began teaching September 2011 at the Carbon Valley Recreation Center. I decided at the end of last year to begin studying to become a Certified Personal Trainer and I achieved that certification this past February. This is where I am today, leading classes and expanding my knowledge in group fitness as well joining the team at Just TRI Fitness, LLC as a personal trainer Anyone can achieve the lifestyle they want and deserve, but you have to work for it! CVA Students Headed to World Finals

Carbon Valley Academy’s Odyssey of the Mind structure team has earned an invitation to World Finals at Iowa State University. Imagine building an 8-inch tall balsa wood structure weighing less than 15 grams that is able to support more than 500 pounds. That is exactly what team members Sara Biggs, Hannah Davis, Isaac Dukes, Jadyn Rangel, Travis Wyatt, and Julia Wyatt have created. Odyssey of the Mind is an international creative problem-solving competition. Team members work together to solve one of five problems. The 6th and 7th graders from CVA competed in the “You Make the Call problem. As they placed weights on top of their balsa wood structure, they also performed a humorous skit.

The CVA team will also compete in Spontaneous at Worlds. In Spontaneous, team members have to solve a surprise problem. This part of the competition requires the kids to think on their feet. Creativity is key as teams solve their spontaneous problem. CVA’s Odyssey of the Mind team wishes to thank the CVA community for its overwhelming support as they work to fundraise for their trip to World Finals. CVA teachers, staff, and families have shown great generosity by participating in our Silent Auction for Fun Activities with Teachers, restaurant nights at Chili’s and Chick-fil-A, and raffle for a helicopter ride at Frederick in Flight. Generous donations from individuals as well as from the Town of Frederick help to make this dream a reality for our middle school team. CVA’s Odyssey of the Mind team is grateful to be part of such a supportive community!

are required to see an "in-network" provider. Almost all PPO plans will provide the same annual maximum to the patient in or out-of-network. Depending on the policy, it is not uncommon for the patient to have very little "out-of-pocket" expense for preventative and diagnostic procedures. Understanding that no one likes to be faced with unexpected costs, we encourage submission of a predetermination to your insurance when more extensive dental work is required. Should your insurance change and you discover the dentist you have forged a relationship with is not "in-network", review with them your new policy and work with them to do a little research before starting over with an entirely different doctor and staff. Try to objectively evaluate your options and not be swayed by perceived cost savings. Many patients feel the small difference in "out-of-pocket" expense is well worth being able to receive care from a dentist they are familiar and comfortable with. Health care should never be chosen based upon getting the "best deal". Choose the best care possible, you and your family deserve it!

The most commonly cited reason I hear from people who need, but choose not to seek dental treatment is that they "can't afford dental care because they don't have dental insurance." The sooner decay or intraoral disease is treated, the less expensive that treatment will be. The old adage that " an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure" definitely applies! Whether you currently have dental insurance or are considering obtaining it, here are a few key factors to keep in mind. • The intent of all dental insurance is the same; to help pay a portion of the cost of dental care. • All policies have a yearly "cap" or maximum, sometimes as low as $700.00 to $1000.00. Rarely do we see policies in excess of $2000.00 per year. • As most dental insurance policies are obtained as an employee benefit, the terms of each policy have been negotiated between the FREE Beverages 2012 employer and the insurance from our Co-Sponsors & company. The Carbon Valley Consumer Report—Bringing Residents Information About Area Businesses

Local Author’s First Book Points Readers to Steadfast Joy

Cathy McIntosh finally found her genre in Christian women’s issues after pursuing a lifelong ambition to write and publish books. “As a young adult, I tried to partner with my mom to write a novel.” said McIntosh, “but our individual styles were too different. I also learned that my brain is not really wired to write fiction.” In the fall of 2010, McIntosh was overwhelmed by a family situation. She soon recognized that she was stricken with a nearly paralyzing level of fear that threatened to affect every part of her life. On staff as the Ministry Coordinator of Prairie Community Church in Firestone, she was blessed to receive loving counsel from the Pastors and fellow staff members. A short time later, while searching for a topic for the next women’s study at her church, Pastor Brian Thompson suggested that she teach on fear. “His suggestion floored me, “McIntosh recalled. “I was certainly no expert on fear, in fact, I was still struggling to stand firm in my faith and push my personal fear aside.” After a lot of prayer, however, she developed a 12-week study on the topic of joy and common burdens (including fear) that often mask our joy. While presenting the study to the women of Prairie, lives were touched and women and their families were blessed. She found it enjoyable to watch the way that God worked through the truths He had shown her through her personal trials.” When McIntosh wrapped up the study, she prayerfully asked, now what, and felt the Lord’s prompting to prepare Finding Joy in the Journey: Savoring the Fruit of the Spirit for publication. Her first book shares Biblical truths that help us accept God’s very best for our lives. She explains, “So often, we settle for mediocrity when God desires only His ultimate goodness for us. We get hung up with our fear, worry, grief, shame, and confusion, and become too distracted to reach out and grab the joy and freedom that He intends for His children. ” Her book uses Biblical and personal examples that equip women to overcome their burdens to fully embrace God’s joy. Finding Joy in the Journey: Savoring the Fruit of the Spirit includes curriculum for a 12-week Bible study. It is perfectly suited for individual or group use. Cathy also offers a free leader’s guide on her website (www.strengthenedbytheword.com) for those who wish to lead the study to a group of women in their church, neighborhood, or other gatherings. For more information on Cathy’s ministry, visit www.strengthenedbytheword.com. Finding Joy in the Journey: Savoring the Fruit of the Spirit is available to purchase online on her ministry website or on www.amazon.com.

'Thinking About Suicide' website Helps the Depressed and Suicidal

By Michael Ireland Senior International Correspondent, ASSIST News Service LONGMONT, CO (ANS) -- Bestselling Christian author, Linda Evans Shepherd, has been ministering to the suicidal since New Year's Eve, 2003. "That night it occurred to me to use Internet marketing tools to put our interactive gospel presentation, www.GodTest.com into the suicidal lanes of the Internet," Shepherd told ANS. "Before the night was over, we saw 20 people come to faith. Since then, we've added tools for the depressed and helped over 300,000 come to faith while preventing literally thousands of suicides," she said. Shepherd's nonprofit ministry, Right to the Heart, began to see its website's visits drastically decline when Google changed its search algorithm. Looking for a solution, Linda took online marketing classes. But the incident that prompted her to implement what she'd learned happened this past November 28th. It was 10:35 a.m. when she heard sirens screaming down her street. Later, on the local news, she was shocked to learn that a beautiful 22-year-old neighbor, who had just graduated with honors from University of Colorado Boulder, had purposefully ended her life by throwing herself in front of an 18-wheeler. That this suicide happened three blocks from her home, only feet from her church, the very church which helped to sponsor her ministry's efforts to reach the suicidal, was not lost on

Tough Conversation All Couples Should Have

By Dave DiOrio State Farm™ Agent If asked, most couples would say it's important to protect the financial future of their families in the event of a spouse's unexpected death. Yet 74 percent of couples rarely or never discuss the topic of life insurance as part of their financial planning strategy, according to a 2010 State FarmŽ Life Insurance Study. A 2011 study from finance research firm LIMRA revealed that 41 percent of U.S. adults don't even have life insurance. That doesn't mean it's not on their minds. Sixty-two percent of respondents said uncertainty in the economy makes having life insurance even more important than it had previously been. Bringing up the subject can be difficult. It may be that discussing the unexpected death of a spouse is awkward. Or that one spouse already feels the pressure of being the primary wage earner. Or that a spouse who has recently lost a job will react negatively to the topic. But whatever the obstacles, talking about life insurance is critical to both partners -- even if one earns substantially more than the other, or one doesn't earn an income. To start the discussion, try these tips: • Talk before you're in a financial crisis. Pick a time when you're not stressed, and treat the topic as you would any other aspect of your financial planning. • Make a plan that incorporates life insurance as a primary component of your overall financial strategy. Having a plan in place can be reassuring if your circumstances change. • Set a monthly budget and learn what options you can afford. Schedule follow-up evaluations and adjust your coverage as your needs, family situation and income change. • Consult an insurance expert who can provide an outside perspective and make the discussion less stressful. • Focus your discussion on the love you have for your family and your desire to protect it from financial burdens, rather than on the possible death of a spouse. Contact State Farm agent Dave DiOrio at 303.665.3273 to learn more about the life insurance options that protect your family's future. Shepherd. Shepherd said: "I was heartbroken when our newspaper reported that Katy's last online search was 'how to kill yourself.' How I wished she could have found our helps for hope, life, and faith, instead of those ghastly instructions on how to die." Shepherd began reaching out to her Christianauthor friends, all members of her ministry's Advanced Writers and Speakers Association (www.AWSA.com ). Twenty authors agreed to write for the new blog, www.ThinkingAboutrSuicide.com "It's our hope that by creating over 200 new articles per year on suicide, featuring bullying, military, teens, marriage, divorce, job loss, depression, surviving the loss of a loved one, survival stories, chronic pain, and illness, that we will populate the Internet with help and hope," said Shepherd. Shepherd says the ministry is already making a difference. Since its launch in March, the blog Thinking About Suicide, has reached over 1,000 people per month from around the world. It has already helped to prevent suicides, connect the hurting with helps, and seen over 800 people come to faith. "Suicide has touched almost every family in the US as well as families from around the world. Please join us in prayer that our online encouragement will make a difference as we point our readers to hope and to a God who really cares," she said. To help spread the word about this resource for the suicidal and those who have lost friends and family to suicide, subscribe to, tweet, or Facebook the articles from www.ThinkingAboutSuicide.com. Six Tips for People Who Pay Estimated Taxes

If you have income that is not subject to withholding you may want to consider paying quarterly estimated taxes to the IRS during the year. Depending upon your financial circumstances, what you do for a living (for example, if you are self-employed), and the types of income you receive will determine if you need to make estimated payments. Here are six tips from the IRS that explain estimated taxes and how to pay them. 1. If you have or anticipate having income from sources such as self-employment, interest, dividends, alimony, rent, gains from the sales of assets, prizes or awards, then you may have to pay estimated tax. 2. As a general rule, you must pay estimated taxes in 2012 if both of these statements apply: 1) You anticipate to owe at least $1,000 in tax after subtracting your tax withholding, if any and tax credits, and 2) You are expecting your withholding and tax credits to be less than the smaller of either 90 percent of your current 2012 tax or 100 percent of your tax that was reported when you filed your 2011 return. 3. Schedule C (Sole Proprietors) and Partners of LLCs/Partnerships who show a profit generally should consider making estimated tax payments due to self employment tax. 4. To figure your 2012 estimated tax, you will want to include anticipated gross income, taxes, deductions and credits for the year. You'll want to be as accurate as possible to avoid underpayment penalties. You will want to consider changes in your situation such as changes in jobs, relationship etc as well as any recent tax law changes that go into effect before the end of the year. 5. The remaining estimated tax payment dates for the 2012 tax year are: June 15th, Sept. 17th and Jan. 15th, 2013. 6. The easiest way to pay estimated taxes is electronically through the Electronic Federal Tax Payment System, or EFTPS. Another option available is to pay your estimated tax payments using Form 1040-ES, Estimated Tax for Individuals and pay any estimated taxes by check, money order, or by credit/debit card. Please feel free to give me a call today if you need help making estimated payments.
