Veteran's Day Memorial Service Raises a New Flag and Hope for Our Nation's Missing and Gone
Flag Dedication at Mead Ponds Speech given by Chief Master Sergeant James B. Whitlow Jr.
G
ood Morning and thank you for attending this ceremony. I would like to start off by saying how proud I am of this town and the people represented here today to memorialize our war heroes and Veterans. On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month of 1918, an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, was declared between the Allied nations and Germany in the First World War, then known as “the Great War.” Commemorated as Armistice Day beginning the following year, November 11th became a legal federal holiday in the United States in 1938. In the aftermath of World War II and the Korean War, Armistice Day became Veterans Day, a holiday dedicated to American veterans of all wars. Unlike other countries or past US militaries todays Marines, Army, Navy, Air Force and Coastguard are an all volunteer force. The flag being dedicated today represents the POWs or Missing in Action but not forgotten men and women of the armed forces.
The following numbers are just from five wars or conflicts where our brother’s in arms are still unaccounted for: Our men and women of the military and our first responders all have unique jobs that require family to sacrifice on our behalves. When duty calls and we either have to deploy or respond it is much harder on the families. We have a mission and task that drives us, keeps us focused and keeps our minds busy. The families only have those around them that are willing to spend the time to help. As the stone on the freedom memorial states,
“Freedom is not Free”
Veterans proudly raising a newly dedicated flag honoring their brothers, and sisters, in arms.
Each of the POW/MIAs, those who have served before, the first responders and the current members of the armed forces writes a check payable to the citizens of the United States. The only difference is on the payment amount line it is blank and chargeable up to the amount our own lives. In closing I would like again to thank each and every one of you that has taken the time to support this memorial for our men and women of the Armed Forces.

A LETTER FROM MAYOR GARY SHIELDS Join Us for Mead's Happy Holiday Festivities! Dear Residents, I hope that you have all enjoyed awonderful Thanksgiving holiday with family and friends! Now, as the frenzied month of December begins, I further hope that you are able to reflect upon the many blessings in your life and to find some quiet and personal opportunities to let the special people in your life know how much you appreciate and love them. There are so many distractions in the world lately and it does not appear that there will be a short term solution to the many problems we are facing. In my opinion and as these problems continue, it will be more important than ever to acknowledge those who bring peace, love, joy and happiness to our lives. With that being said, I would like to remind
you of a few local opportunities that will allow you to spend time with friends and family and possibly to create special holiday memories at the same time. The annual Chili Cook Off and Tree Lighting Celebration on December 5th. These festivities begin at 2 pm and continue to approximately 7-8 pm. Our Events Committee has been hard at work planning this event and there is sure to be something for every member of the family to enjoy. Details of the event can be found in the December issue of the Mead Messenger or on the town website, www.townofmead.org. Also, if you are looking for ways to give back and get engaged in the holiday season, I would like to encourage you to consider participating in the Town of Mead Giving Tree and/or the Mead Community Food Bank. Information about these local opportunities can be obtained by calling the Town Hall

Crane Family Fundraiser at Black Canyon Distillery Holiday Open House & Bake Sale December 5 11am-8pm 13710 Deere Court, Longmont (Mead) Bake Sale & Money Tree to Benefit the Crane family. If you would like to donate baked items, please have them at the distillery by 11am. South Philly Cheesesteaks will be in the parking lot cooking up some great eats!! Isaac Crane has SMA (Spinal Muscular Atrophy). Given this diagnosis, Jenna, Isaac’s mom, quit her job to stay at home with him full time. This enables Jenna to share her precious moments with Isaac, who requires 24 hour care. Jeremiah, Isaac’s dad, was already a stay at home dad for Isaac and their 3 year old daughter Natalie. While it has been a blessing to be with Isaac as much as possible, it has come with financial hardship. The community, their church, friends and family have been a huge support. The family is grateful to everyone who has donated time, money, food and prayer! They have needed all.

Mountain View Fire Rescue Investigator Receives High Honor
M
ountain View Fire Rescue is proud to congratulate Senior Investigator John Bohn who was awarded the 2015 CIAAI Investigator of the Year Award. This honor was awarded during the Annual Training Conference of the International Association of Arson Investigators- Colorado Chapter. Bohn was nominated by Chris Forkner, President of CIAAI and a member of the National Response Team for the ATF. Forkner states in his nomination, “This nomination does not involve a single specific case or fire scene worked by John, but is a nomination based on John’s career long dedication to fire investigation, his team work, his eagerness to continue to learn, his leadership, and his friendship.” Bohn’s dedication and leadership has been instrumental in effective and efficient investigations in Boulder and Weld Counties. He is consistently training and helping others understand the importance of the investigation process. Forkner also states, “John is the epitome of an engaged and dedicated fire investigator.”

of September 1, 2015, Mountain View Fire Rescue received a 2/8B rating from the Insurance Service Office (ISO). An ISO score is given on a scale from 1-10 and it is used to determine how much risk there is in a community. The lower the score, the less risk there is. This isn’t an easy task to undertake and many times it involves purchasing new apparatus or equipment and increasing or adding new trainings. Fire Chief Mark Lawley states, “Continuing to lower our score helps with our priority of lowering risk District-wide, and it also helps the Towns and City within our District in pursuing economic development to enhance their communities.” A lower ISO score is a factor which can help entice business owners, contemplating locating their business within a Town or City, who would consider

Nathan Stauffer Webb
March 7, 1975 - October 28, 2015
Six words that describe the life of Nathan are: Adventurous, Brilliant, Inspiring, Humorous, Spiritual, and always, Kind. Nathan Stauffer Webb was born March 7, 1975 in Dallas, Texas to Udell K. and LeAnn Stauffer Webb. There came a strong impression to his mother at the time of his birth that he was an extraordinary individual. At the time of his birth his father was attending Baylor college of Dentistry in Dallas. Nathan was a very congenial child and enjoyed many friends. His experience at school and home was a happy one. Nathan was flexible, relaxed, and an uplifting force in his family. When he was ten years old, his family moved to St. George, Utah. He quickly made many new friends. When Nathan was a teenager his father bought a boat. He then asked Nathan, “Did I do the right thing?” Nathan quickly and emphatically answered, “Yes!” Nathan loved boating, water-skiing, knee-boarding, and he even learned how to water-ski on his bare feet. He also loved snowskiing, snow-boarding, 4-wheeling, dirtbiking, kite flying, swimming, rock climbing, and many other activities. His family and friends remember him as “adventurous, funny, and fun-loving”. Academics seemed to come easily for Nathan. He enjoyed being involved with student government in high school. He graduated with honors
from Pine View High School and received a scholarship to Weber State University. As a college student he tutored other students in math to help pay his expenses. At age 19, he fulfilled a successful 2 year mission to Sao Paulo, Brazil for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. His missionary companions have commented about his dedication, devotion, and positive attitude. After his mission, Nathan attended the University of Utah where he majored in engineering. He worked while attending college, designing trusses and paid his way. It was during this time that he met and married Marie Deon White in the Salt Lake Temple. Two beautiful children were born to them: Isaac Nathan Webb and Samantha Sue Webb. Nathan earned his Masters of engineering degree and was immediately employed in Salt Lake City as a mechanical engineer. After a short time, Nathan and his family moved to Longmont, Colorado where he accepted a new job. A home was purchased in Mead, CO. On May 27, 2008, Nathan was offered a job at Lockheed Martin. His assignment was to help design the Orion space vehicle. At the time of his death he had worked there for almost 7 ½ years. His assignment to work on Orion’s heat shield was one of his favorites. He was awarded a certificate of recognition for his efforts. Sadness enveloped Nathan when a divorce occurred between Marie

and himself. Nathan later married Jennifer Macfarlane on June 26th 2011. They were sealed together for time and all eternity in the Denver Temple. Nathan became the step-father of Willow, Jennifer’s daughter. All seemed well and great happiness was enjoyed until a racquetball accident occurred when a racquetball hit his left ear and Nathan developed Tinnitus. He researched every avenue to find the best way to help himself. He found a therapy that had seemed to show some results for other people. He began therapy and was able to survive the Tinnitus the first time. Then a relapse occurred. He again used the therapy that had been proven to give the best results. This time it did not work. The Tinnitus worsened and became unbearable. If there is a hero in this story, it has to be Nathan. He fought to the end-- day after day, week after week, month after month. Many days were simply days of trying to survive until the next day. He pushed on until he could go on no longer. He died October 28, 2015. We feel the peace of Nathan and of the wonderful place that Nathan is now in. His funeral services were November 7, 2015, with Interment following at Foothills Garden of Memory Cemetery Arrangements were handled by Howe Mortuary in Longmont, CO.
