C-C Catering & Cakes Firmly Connected to the Local Community
By Tiffany J. Holcomb The Newbys were well into their careers when they started C-C Catering and Cakes, LLC. Lane had spent half a lifetime farming and even plowing roads for the City of Longmont; Tamie spent twenty plus years working as a deli and bakery manager. Lane’s family has been rooted in the community for generations, in part because of the family farm known locally as “Newby Farms.” Like Lane, Tamie has lived and

By Robin Barrett Do you remember the style of the 50’s, pinup girls, hot rods, and a whole lot of fun and individuality? Well right in Mead, Colorado, there is a company called Juicy Lucy. Juicy Lucy is an internet based business focusing on jewelry and accessories with the theme all about rockabilly; inspired by kustom kulture, Psychobilly, tattoo, pinup girls, and hot rod culture. Fun, colorful and unique and guaranteed to be conversation starters. The style of Rockabilly music and dress continues to be reinvented, but is always heavily steeped in 1940s and 50s style. Today's rockabillies are often tattooed, could have bright or dark color hair with tight curls and bangs and fifty’s style makeup. As dress plays such a huge part in rockabilly culture, so does vintage. Juicy Lucy owners admit there’s no limit to what inspires them and they love following their inspiration wherever it may lead them. Rockabilly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll music, dating to early 1950s in the United States. It is a "blend of country & western and rhythm & blues" and paved the way to classic rock 'n' roll. It has also been defined as popular music combining
By Robin Barrett The practice of blowing glass has been around since antiquity. First Century B.C. Syrians are most widely credited with the serendipitous discovery that glass could be blown from the end of a hollow tube into different shapes or molds. This was a landmark event in the history of glass manufacturing [source: Encyclopedia Britannica]. Impressively, glassblowing techniques have evolved little since then. While new technologies have introduced more modern equipment, the fundamentals of glassblowing remain the same. Glass can be made out of combinations of many potential ingredients, which create varying levels of traits like transparency, strength, and conductivity. While this is an ancient form of art, is practiced, today, in the town of Mead by Megan Herron. Megan Herron grew up in

Mead Mayor Report zz As I finally get to my computer I think the rain has stopped outside, at least for now. The historic flooding in neighboring communities has been unprecedented. Fortunately for our town we have been blessed and spared from that disaster and I can report that less than a handful of houses took on some water in the basement. What I am really impressed and proud of is how our residents, businesses, town staff and organizations voluntarily stepped up to help those unfortunate individuals and assist the American Red Cross in bringing comfort to the folks seeking shelter at the Mead High School. Keeping the drainage ditches clear so the water could flow fell on the backs of the Mead Public Works Department and they did a superb job seven days a week to assure that our community did not flood. zz Unfortunately the weather forced us to cancel Mead Community Day but it has been rescheduled to October 5 and we are hoping for favorable conditions. I hope that you enjoyed going to the Mead Sugar Beet Festival. The Mead Rotary Club does a yeoman job in putting this on for the agricultural heritage of the area. By the way, the members of the Rotary, along with the El Ranchero restaurant, Mead Pizza Plus and the Red Rooster, provided many warm meals to the evacuees. While we are on dates, don’t forget that on October 1819 we will have Mead Clean Up Days, with snow dates being the following weekend. And, before you know it, you will receive a mail ballot from Weld County that will also contain an important issue to our Town. I urge you to give it serious consideration and become knowledgeable as to why your Trustees put it on the ballot. zz Volunteerism I believe is part of the culture of our town which makes it the premier place on the front range to work, play, live and raise a family. I want to welcome Wendy Meehan-Gauger as a new member of our Downtown Revitalization Committee. We still have some

Mead and many of you know her mother who has worked at the Mead Post Office for 15 years. The Mead Community Day event was the first place the public could buy Megan’s beautiful art, however, Megan now has a store where customers can come in and browse. People of all ages seem to find an appreciation for this type of glass art. Women who require hypoallergenic jewelry love the glass charms made right here in Mead. Men can custom order a shot glass in the colors of their favorite team. Glass motorcycle sculptures appeal to both genders, as well. Megan’s business “Magic in the Glass” is your best source for hand blown glass. The glass shop was started with the intention of bringing colorful one of a kind glass gifts and art to the community. At “Magic In The Glass”, you’ll be able to experience the unique look and feel of many different combinations of glass. There is a lot of color that is used which makes Megan’s pieces very exclusive. To make an item even more unique and personal, you can custom order. Customers can order gifts for soon-to-be brides, grandchildren, or consider a sculpture or memorial for the loss of a loved one or even a pet. Consider placing your pet’s ashes into glass as a memorial. Megan is designing ornaments for the holiday now. Airplanes, trucks, and tractors as well as other Christmas ornaments can be found at “Magic In The Glass.” To find out more about the holiday specials, visit the store often. Prior to the opening of “Magic In The Glass,” Megan worked for three years selling her beautiful art pieces to other gift shops and internet customers. Megan loves that each day and with each project brings something new and exciting. “Nothing beats seeing the look on a customer’s face when they see something they love for the first time,” Meagan says. “I love knowing a piece of art is going to a good home.” This unique shop is a great blessing to the town and to the surrounding communities. Because of the internet, people from around the state and even country can enjoy Megan’s artistry. While her hand blown glass is available globally, we all are fortunate enough to visit “Magic In The Glass” located at 323 Main Street in Mead, Colorado 80542. She is CLOSED on Sunday & Monday and opens the rest of the week with varying hours: Tuesday 9:305:30, Wednesday 9:30-7:00, Thursday 9:30-7:00, Friday 9:30-5:30 and Saturdays from 9:30-noon. If you wish to call “Magic In The Glass” the phone number is (720)314-6985. If you like shopping on the internet or looking for something you would like to purchase prior to visiting “Magic in the Glass” you can find Megan’s art at www.magicintheglass.etsy.com If you would like to contact “Magic In The Glass” by email the address is: magicintheglass@aol.com. Megan will receive your email personally as she works independently in the shop. I hope this article will inspire all the Mead and outer lying communities to stop by and say hi to Megan as well as take a good look at this ancient art form.

Your Home Town Auto Repair Solution raised a family in the area, so Mead has an important plane in the hearts of the Newby’s and their family. In a time of sadness came change for the Newby’s. When Tamie’s parents passed away they left the couple an inheritance earmarked for either business or investment. After taking the time to consider the future direction they should go, the Newby’s decided that their love of cooking and community could be combined. They choose to form C-C Catering and Cakes, LLC. Together Lane and Tamie have created an impact on the local community with their down home catering options. C-C Catering and Cakes created custom menus to fit each individual customer’s needs, for events ranging in size and style, while making their catering options affordable to their customers. While their specialties may notably be Lane’s smoked brisket and Tamie’s macaroni and cheese, they do not restrict themselves to a specific menu or style of cooking. Over the last year C-C Catering and Cakes has catered events for the Mead Rotary, the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce and even Colorado Congressman, Cory Gardner. The menus created for some of these events have included, Mayan, Italian, Hawaiian and BBQ. Additionally, they have created beautiful cakes for various parties and weddings. While catering and cakes are the main focus of the company, Lane and Tamie took their business in another direction by also opening a food cart in Mead, which has become a staple of sorts to many individuals in the local community. On any given day throughout the season, groups of regular customers can be seen sitting at a table
neat the cart eating and sharing stories. The business has become an important element for the Newby’s, however family always comes first. Their combined family includes oldest daughter Andrea (and her three sons), son Matthew and youngest daughter Brooke, each of whom assists with the family business in various capacities. Lane, Tamie and C-C Catering and Cakes LLC., are committed to the local community and the Town of Mead. C-C Catering and Cakes has been a member of the Mead Area Chamber of Commerce for several years; Tamie currently serves as a board member of the Chamber as well as Vice-President, also she has recently joined the Mead Rotary. Tamie has been instrumental to the local community by assisting in the organization of the 1st Annual Mead Summer Festival, facilitating and implementing the Mead High School Sports Season Poster Program, organizing food drives and numerous other event, often donating prizes and gift certificates in addition to volunteering. During the recent flooding disaster that has impacted so many individuals and families along the Front Range, C-C Catering and Cakes, LLC., along with other volunteers from the Mead Rotary served meals at the Mead High School Evacuation Center to those displaced by the flooding. However, Lane and Tamie took things a step farther by offering those in need a place to shower or a home cooked meal. Lane and Tamie have a true love for this community and it shows in their business. To learn more about C-C Catering and Cakes, LLC. and their custom menus, contact Lane and Tamie Newby at 970-371-7195 or email tamies00@yahoo.com.

Other important influences on rockabilly include western swing, boogie woogie, and rhythm and blues and we cannot forget the hot rods.
