Broken Sugarbeet Festival Sept. 28 Glass, No Problem for Rickman Glass By Robin Barrett If there is one couple who lives out a philosophy of “the glass is half full” it’s Alex and Valerie, owners of Rickman Glass in Mead at I-25 and Hwy. 66. Glass is their business but custom shower enclosures is their passion,

The Mead Area was founded, in large part, upon the Sugar Beet industry. To celebrate this heritage, the Mead Area Community Foundation (MACF) created the "Sugarbeet Festival." 2006 was the inaugural Festival, and produced tremendous community support. The annual Festival continues to grow, and is now co-hosted by the Rotary Club of Mead. The Mead Sugarbeet Festival is a one-day event held on the site of an actual sugar beet field. Traditional fair activities are offered, including garden tractor races, skillet tosses, pedal tractor pulls and hay bale throws. However, attendees also have the opportunity to tour a sugar beet field and watch beets as they are weighed and loaded for delivery to be converted to raw sugar. The Mead Sugar Beet Festival is held the last Saturday of September in the beet field located at the intersection of CR 13 and CR 32 between Platteville and Mead, Weld County. See the flyer on page M2 for all details of this year's event! Photos courtesy of Mead Community Foundation.

Richard Macomber

MEAD MAYOR REPORT  School has started smoothly, the days are getting shorter and cooler, but I can tell you that things are getting hotter in your Town of Mead. Calendar wise the Mead Community Day will be on September 14 in the Town Park. This as you know is a spectacular event and is for the most part organized and run by your volunteer neighbors. The Sugar Beet Festival will be two weeks later on September 28 and will be held on the north east corner of WCR 32 and 13. This is also a great event , run also by 100% volunteers…mostly the Mead Rotary…and will have activities for all ages. While we are working on our calendars let’s be sure to put down October 18-19 as the Mead Clean up Days… snow dates are October 25-26.  Not to be outdone, Weld County will hold the election for county commissioners in early November. This election will also contain a Town of Mead question and I urge you to become familiar with why it is important to all of us. As a point of information, this election will be by state code a 100% mail ballot and I sincerely urge everyone that is eligible to vote.  If you haven’t noticed, and it would be difficult to miss, the town hall renovation is underway and going strong. The Mountain View Fire District has also relocated its equipment and personnel just up the street from the temporary town hall but is still within a short response time to all of Mead. Construction is also prevalent in the Liberty Ranch portion of town and the Vail View roads are being repaired (not at taxpayer expense). Our town engineer and Public Works are evaluating all the roads in town so we can prepare a long range budgeting plan to keep them in top shape for your driving pleasure. Also the Mead Rotary is planning on placing a flag pole at our veterans memorial to honor each of our military services. As a veteran I personally feel this is a wonderful gesture and I thank them.  With 2014 quickly approaching it is time that the town started on its annual budget cycle. If you think

there is something that should receive serious consideration and included as a line item, this is the time to let us know. Once the budget is locked in it is difficult to change it.  West Nile virus has been discussed at length and we are deeply concerned about public health and the elimination of the mosquitoes that carry the disease. We have investigated spraying and found that to be extremely expensive. Our Public Works department has been very diligent and has been placing a substance approved by the Board of Health in any still water ponds and waterways. This material kills the larva before the insects can hatch and has been very successful.  A couple of town related items that are of concern to you. First, we have determined that due to postal zone coding some residents have been identified as living in Longmont or Platteville instead of Mead. This is important in that Mead does not receive the taxes you pay on any vehicle purchases and in addition you will be assessed an RTD tax that you should not pay. Second, there has been some questions regarding intergovernmental agreements with neighboring communities. I can assure you that your town board believes in comity (the principle that one jurisdiction will extend certain courtesies to others) on the front range and as such we have agreements in place with the towns/cities to our north, west and east. We will continue a sensible and intelligent dialogue with the community to our south. Third, the Sheriff’s department has requested the assistance of all of us in terms of community watch. The town covers a large geographic area and the Sheriff’s Dept. cannot be everywhere at once. Basically they are requesting that if you see something that does not seem right, please call 911. The officers would rather respond and find out that it is a perfectly innocent event than making out investigative reports and additional work. While the county dispatchers may request your name and address, all calls to 911 do remain anonymous.  If you have any thoughts, ideas and just want to discuss a concept that can improve this wonderful town that we live, work and play in, please call me or talk to one of your trustees. If you want, you are more than welcome at our semimonthly Board of Trustees meetings or just leave a note with our efficient town staff and they will get it to me. Please be careful of the children walking to school and as always, please keep the men and women protecting our precious freedom in your prayers. Semper Fi !

second only to family. Many independent business owners find themselves in an uninvited situation that essentially forces an issue that needs to be resolved; and NOW! That uninvited situation was Alex’s dad becoming gravely ill in early 2012. Doctors gave him a 5% chance of survival. It was during his dad’s illness and, thankfully, his recovery, that Alex lost his job. Both Alex (15 years) and Valerie (10 years) were already in the glass business and had been toying with the idea of starting their own business since 2010. So, at the loss of Alex’s job, they officially created Rickman Glass, an independent, family owned and operated company. They live in Mead, a growing family community and set up the original location in downtown Mead. (Ribbon Cutting in downtown Mead location above) They have recently moved to a larger facility located at 3995 South Valley Drive, also Mead, but in the business park at I-25 and Hwy 66. They service the entire Front Range including individual home owners, contractors, and commercial owners. “Alex gains the most pleasure from helping individuals design their custom shower enclosures,” says Valerie. “Our clients have an idea of what they want and Alex shows them how to achieve it.” They also cut simple to custom mirrors, table top glass and of course, windows for your home. A baseball through the window isn’t as common as it used to be but if that or a tree branch break your window, call Rickman Glass. They’ll be right over to protect your home by placing security board over the broken window with their 24-Hour emergency service.

Other services include:

• Picture frame glass: 1/16”-1/8” cut to fit any size frame • Table top glass: ¼”-1/2” all shapes and sizes for all tables • Floor mat glass: ¼” tempered safety glass to fit under the desk for easy rolling of chairs • Shelves: ¼” – ½” annealed or tempered safety glass including hardware for installation • Mirrors: ¼” mirrors all shapes and sizes • Custom shower enclosures: Frameless, tub sliders, framed, and semi-framed styles • Commercial applications: storefront doors and glass replacement • Window glass: 1/8” – ¼” single pane window, reglazes and 7/16” to 1-1/4” OA insulated unit replacements • New windows: Vinyl window replacements and aluminum window replacement • Emergency board ups: 24 hour service • new screens, repair screens Did you notice they make glass floor mats? Many people struggle with the flimsy curling plastic ones but Kelly Martindale, owner of this paper, has a glass mat and LOVES it. Glass mats are made from tempered safety glass and make chair movement “slick as glass.” No kidding. Less stress on your joints as movement becomes like gliding on ice. Kelly says, “It’s fantastic and very durable. I’ve dropped my stapler, glass of ice water, and other tools and it’s held up perfectly. I’ll use a glass chair mat forever.” Rickman Glass, like many independent owners, take extra special pride in their customer service. Many corporations don’t stress that anymore. Small business owners know they put their name on the product and they are neighbors with their clients. More often than not, their kids go to the same schools, they pick up their mail at the local post office together and they shop in the same grocery stores. Quality of service and product matters! Alex and Valerie promise to improve every project they touch! No job is too big or too small. Rickman Glass makes house calls and they welcome your invite to quote a job or discuss a custom project such as glass back splashes in your kitchen! When Alex isn’t at work he loves building and riding motorcycles and four-wheelers. Valerie is just learning to ride motorcycles. They are busy with their four kids ranging from second grade to college. All birthdays, births, feature This community business stands for honest, hard work, and excellent customer service. Come by and articles and other announcements check them out. They would love to see you. Their hours are FREE. Deadline is the 15th of are M-F 8AM to 5PM and Saturdays by appointment. each month for the next month's You can reach them at 303-564-4931. They also have a issue of the Consumer Report website that you can take a look at www.rickmanglass. of Mead. If you are a Mead com. Alex and Valerie would love to help you out with business owner and want more information, please contact us for all of your glass needs. Anton Chekhov wrote, “Don't tell me the moon is feature stories and advertising opportunities at carbonvalley@ shining; show me the glint of light on broken glass.” “Then, immediately call Rickman Glass!” says gmail.com. Mountain View Fire Rescue (MVFR) donates Automated External Defibrillators (AED) to Local Schools.

According to the Red Cross, 350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest this year. Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time, and MVFR is helping schools be prepared. In total, seven AED’s will be donated from MVFR to the following schools: Mead High School, Mead Middle School, Erie High School, Erie Middle School, and Niwot High School. These AED’s were donated by Zoll to assist MVFR with their AED’s in Schools program and MVFR also worked with Mead Booster Club to be able to purchase additional AED’s for the Mead schools, bringing the total to 8 new AED’s in the MVFR District. Zoll AED Plus is the only AED with Real CPR Help technology, which provides feedback for both depth and rate of chest compressions during CPR. AED’s have the potential to save someone’s life when they are in cardiac arrest as an AED analyzes heart rhythm and determines if it is necessary to administer an electrical shock to the individual. This electrical shock helps the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. For every minute without defibrillation, the chance of survival is reduced by 10%. MVFR Foundation is accepting donations to be able to provide these in the elementary schools within the District and to provide traveling AED’s in each high school for sporting events. Donations can be sent to the following: MVFR Foundation, 9119 E. County Line Rd., Longmont, CO 80501. For more information please email info@mvfpd.org or call us at 303-772-0710.
