Cheryl Hamilton as told to Peggy Blewett Have you ever been in that point in your life where you do not know where you are heading or where you want to go. That is where I was when I bumped into a friend one day at the grocery store and he asked me, “What is your plan?” I burst into tears and said, “I don’t have a plan.” He asked if I would like help figuring one out. What I did not know at the time is that he was a “Visionary Coach” and has helped hundreds figure out how to live out their passion while having their vision turn into reality. During our first session he asked me about my passion and I blurted out, “I want to help struggling families and if I could save one family from the pain we went through…it would be worth it.” My son went through four really tough years that involved the court system, drugs, alcohol, and extreme anger at the world. As a last resort, we sent him to Therapeutic Boarding School. During that ten months he began his journey to healing and change. Today, my son is a sophomore in college who is kind, loving, and responsible. With a child spiraling out of control and few resources available, my husband and I had the daunting task to figure out, on our own: • How to navigate the school and court systems; • How best to help our son; • How to preserve our sanity; • How to find the strength to start healing; • How to rebuild a relationship with our son. We received great advice and coaching along the way and our son has thanked us many times for helping him and not giving up on him. Because of those experiences, I decided to start Family WhispererGrowing Healthy Families …One Family at a Time. Family Whisperer is dedicated to come along beside families to bring hope, happiness, and freedom back into their homes. Family Whisperer was also started to teach families simple tools to increase the odds of raising healthy, responsible children. I have five years of group and one-on-one coaching experience, seven years training background, eight years mentoring teenagers, and 19 years of parenting with plenty of highs and lows. With that, Callico Neu Family Whisperer was born February, 2013. See page 17

PawzVeterinary Clinic

By April Fordyce Blewett From big to small, old to young, long hair to no hair; there is a new place for your pets to rest their paws and that is at Pawz Veterinary Clinic. Come welcome the newest veterinarian to town. Whether your family pet needs their very first checkup, shots or specialized care, Pawz Veterinary Clinic invites you to bring your pet in and take advantage of some specials at the same time. Dawn Reiter, DVM, and her staff opened the new clinic April 15th, 2013. After working for other vet clinics, Dawn discovered an opportunity to open her own facility, providing her and her staff the ability to practice medicine the way they had always dreamed. Utilizing the latest technology, much newer than in many other clinics, they have worked hard to provide the best equipment and medical advances for pet healthcare. Pawz Veterinary Clinic provides a broad spectrum of diagnostic procedures through inhouse testing. The facility includes a well-stocked pharmacy, in-clinic surgery suite, in-house x-ray capabilities, a closely supervised hospitalization area, isolation room, and indoor kennels. They use external laboratories for some testing. They also work closely with other specialists when unique diagnostics or surgical procedures are required. They offer sound advice but also optimal veterinary care, allowing your companion to live a long, healthy life. At Pawz, they feel it’s not only their job to treat your pets when they are not feeling well, but also to help you learn how to keep your best friends happy and healthy.

What’s On My Mind

Fancy Song Music Studio

Kelly Martindale, Publisher

No More Excuses

I watch her house every day. Most days the blinds stay closed and the only thing that changes is their truck shows up and then at some point, it leaves. On Fridays the garbage can has been put out and the lawn gets mowed by someone in a red truck. On the weekends, their vehicle comes and goes a lot but I rarely see the inhabitants of that house. How is it that year in and year out, as the seasons come and go, I don’t know the people in that house? I know what they look like but I don’t know them. I cannot say that they are not friendly because if I chance to see them in person they wave or smile, they acknowledge me. I know they speak for I have heard them say hello. But who are they? What goes on inside that house? Why is it so tightly closed? Do they not desire sunlight and fresh air? How and when do the weeds get pulled in the flower bed? They have milk delivery but I never see them retrieve the product from the box. I see FedEx and UPS boxes delivered. But how do they pull them in so fast that I never see the front door opened? What does go on inside that house? I feel like the metal ball within a pinball machine; banging back and forth between the walls of my house. Slamming into the obstacles of my life…my knee on the coffee table, my elbow on the corner down the hall… but the real obstacles are my life; death, loneliness, fear, and even decay. I feel my earthly body rotting from the inside out. The crevices between my eyebrows mark the constant headaches and the dark circles under my eyes prove fatigue has won the battle. But it is the constant weight of grief that stoops my shoulders and forces me to my knees. What have I done to deserve this? I feel imprisoned in my house. Yet, my house protects me from the outside. I need to stay in this refuge, of sorts, that I call my house. Last night, as I walked through the neighborhood, I thought I heard crying. But it wasn’t really crying, as such. The sound haunted me as I progressed to the next block, and the next. Was it a cat? A baby? It was disturbing to say the least. And where did it come from? Which house, or back yard perhaps? Later, in the dark, on the back porch, I heard it again. Eerie. Short-lived but searing into my brain. Not sinister but more like sorrow. Yes, I recognized it…sorrow. I woke several times in the night hearing it in my dreams. I asked God for protection. The days are horrible but the nights excruciating. I crave sleep but it does not refresh me as the nightmares of my life beat inside my brain. I’ve forgotten what rest feels like. To be truthful, I don’t remember what it’s like to be relaxed, like after a massage or a perfect glass of wine or sitting around a campfire with dear friends. How does one recapture that all encompassing feeling of weightlessness? If I could simply unwind, just a bit, that would be Heaven right now. Heaven…especially at night…I beg God for protection.

A child’s screams pierce the neighborhood. She has fallen while running in the street, trying to keep her kite in the sky. The lack of grassy fields becomes devastatingly obvious as she lays on the asphalt; her hands raised with fresh MM Voice blood and road rash. Instructor Those who are home Performer cannot help but hear the painful pleas. The high-pitched squeak (all levels) of aging screen doors Piano Lessons blends with the cries of the little girl. (beginning) Five people  All Ages  step out onto their 303.926.1377 porches. Seeing each 7161 Orchard Ave. other headed to the Frederick, CO 80504 rescue, three retreat. Two continue, both fancysongmusicstudio@comcast.net running, focused only on the child in need. Four hands reach to help the little girl, two voices console with words of comfort, encouragement and companionship. The two women, neighbors, ease the child up, inspecting the wounds, brushing her hair out of her face and debris off her shirt. They help her to the sidewalk and then to her home. With the child’s needs cared for, one woman asks the other, “Would you like to come over for some tea or coffee or even ice water?” The affirmative head shake of the other initiated the walk towards the house. “How have you been?” “Not that good, actually. I’ve been struggling with some things that cannot be changed and I’m not sure how to ‘move on’ as some tell me too.” “Me too.” Setting the sugar and creamer on the table, the two women sat across from each other, and shared. The sweats and baggy T-shirts went unnoticed by both women, as did the unkempt hair and yesterday’s makeup. Neighbors; brought together by a little girl’s need for help and ending up helping each other.

Letter to the Editor Frederick "Debrucing" Proposal

Hi neighbors, You should have received a letter from the Town about a proposal they want to put on a ballot this November about "Debrucing" the town. I attended the first of four public meetings about this last evening. I encourage you to carve out time to attend one of the three remaining meetings. As usual, they scheduled them at either 5:00 or 5:30 PM when most people are still at work or commuting. If you can't attend one of the meetings, here's what I learned. First, "Debrucing" is a slang term indicating a desire to be exempted from some or all of the Colorado TABOR (Taxpayer Bill of Rights) constitutional amendment authored by Doug Bruce and passed by state vote in 1992. TABOR says that the town can only keep revenues that are less then the previous year's revenues plus inflation and the annual local growth factor. I think for this year, that adds up to a 6% increase in Frederick. The ballot proposal, as currently written, does not include a sunset proposal. This means that if passed, it's going to be the law forever and ever. I've contacted the Town Manager and asked him to put their Power Point presentation on the Town web site so those who can't attend one of the presentations, can at least see the text of the proposal and get some information. Their problem (to me a blessing) is that an audit determined that they have $155,000 more in their reserve than allowed by law and they want permission to keep it instead of returning it. They say this $155,000 in overpayments came from the increase in building permit fees collected in 2012. Naturally, they say that if they can keep the cash it will allow them to apply for more and sweeter grants (I define this as begging for other people's money) to improve street maintenance, spruce up the parks, and build new trails. You could also conclude that it would allow them to hire two more people and give each a desk and a computer. Or they could spend it on beautifying "Old Town Frederick," their pet project. Obviously, they made no commitments regarding how this money would be used. I don't believe the $155,000 is their only interest. I suspect they're looking down the road and seeing that our property taxes will significantly increase after the next assessment in 2015 and want to ensure they can keep every cent of it. The bottom line is that we've lived under TABOR for 21 years, it's the State law that voters approved, and they want to be exempt from it. I personally like TABOR. If you agree with me, you'd probably not like their proposal. If you don't like TABOR, you'd probably support their proposal. In any event, I encourage you to study this for yourself and be an educated voter. Thanks for listening, Keith Kettler

Paul Sorensen - Serving the Firestone Community

April 1st, 2014 will be the beginning of my seventh year serving the residents of Firestone as a member of the Firestone Board. I had the honor of being appointed Mayor pro-tem by the board almost four years ago. Mayor Auer has set a great example and due to term limits will be ending his leadership role in April. As a candidate to fill the role of Mayor I thought an introduction would give the Firestone residents an opportunity to get to know about my background and leadership experiences. I grew up in the west suburbs of Chicago where I began my career as an Application Engineer for a company that manufactured sophisticated 3D graphic design systems. Eventually I relocated to Redondo Beach, Calif. where I trained aerospace engineers to use this new technology. I soon became self-employed and 30 years later I still enjoy the challenges of my profession. I design complex fixtures and create the programs to manufacture complex structural components for military and commercial aircraft. My first exposure to local politics was seven years ago when the Firestone Board was at odds with the St. Vrain Valley School District. I joined a group of parents who asked the board to work out their differences. When the board refused, I was motivated to seek a seat on the Board of Trustees to work on a solution. Now six years later, the Board of Trustees has great cooperation and support established with the school district. Shortly after being elected in 2008, I was disappointed to discover that no plans were in place for the town’s 100th anniversary celebration. I researched options, worked with town staff and gained the approval of the board for our Centennial Clock, time capsule and memorial bricks to recognize the milestone. My passion for researching Firestone’s rich history was also a byproduct of that project. I also took the initiative and designed the new sign that proudly identifies Firestone’s historic neighborhood and honors the community’s heritage. I have created several historic documents displayed at Firestone Town Hall, the Carbon Valley Regional Library and the Colorado Municipal League office in Denver. Currently, I am working on a historic video and a history of the community’s pioneer families. There is a long list of policies that the Board of Trustees and staff has implemented throughout the last six years to improve efficiencies and reduce costs that I am proud to be a part of. I am also honored by my appointment as Parks, Trails and Recreation Advisory Board Commissioner for the last four years. I also enjoy being involved with the Carbon Valley Rotary, Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce, Carbon Valley Special Olympics, Carbon Valley Regional Library, American Legion, Longmont YMCA Board and area special events. I am blessed to have met my wife, Julia, in California and we just celebrated our 23rd wedding anniversary. We have two sons ages 22 and 19, plus a stepdaughter and her husband who live in Platteville with three wonderful granddaughters.

 As you may have noticed, we are making much needed improvements to Firestone Blvd from I-25 to Birch Ave. This

Festival, plans are underway to try and reschedule the fireworks and/or some of the music entertainment. Please be sure to read your monthly City Connection and check the City’s website for details.  After a successful National Night Out, our attention turns to National Preparedness Month. Throughout September, Dacono Police Department will be providing helpful information about preparing yourself and family for emergencies, including natural disasters, mass casualties, biological and chemical threats, radiation emergencies, and terrorist attacks. Take a few moments to learn more and stay informed about how to best protect your family, and community during an emergency.  I would also like to encourage everyone to attend the annual Military Honor Flight “Mile of Smiles” on Sunday, September 15. This is an amazing event whereby residents across the region line up, salute and

cheer on the Sunday Morning “Honor Flight” motorcade as our Veterans are escorted to DIA where they’ll be flown to Washington, D.C. to visit their memorial. Bring the kids, wave your flag, and don’t forget the camera! Several Fire Districts, Police Departments, and Military will be on scene. Watch for Rotary’s American flags along the I-25 West Frontage Road by the Frederick-Firestone Fire Protection District Fire Station 2 / Air Life Helipad.  Finally, congratulations to the Mountain View Fire Rescue on their new lower ISO rating. The District has worked diligently to provide the best possible service for its residents. The new lower ISO rating, moving from a 4/9 to a 3/9, will take effect on November 1, 2013. As the ISO rating is reduced, residents and business owners may be able to enjoy lower insurance premiums and better service from MVFR.

of the time the Town of Frederick is looking forward and planning for the future. However, this month there is a decidedly historic theme emerging.  Miners Day will be held September 21, 2013 at Crist Park from 10:00 a.m. - 10:00 p.m.. Miners Day is one of Frederick’s premier annual community events drawing thousands of people to Downtown Frederick for family-oriented fun and entertainment throughout the day. While the event has grown in increasing popularity since its inception in 2003, it continues to offer a small-town feel in celebration of our community’s mining heritage and provides a rich and lively environment for residents, businesses, schools, and community groups from throughout the region to come together for a day of fun. The event includes a dynamic parade, exhibitor booths, food / refreshment vendors, activities, contests, and live entertainment throughout the day. Per tradition, Miners Day concludes with a spectacular evening concert and fireworks display.

 Thanks to Historical Preservation Commissioner Sean Scott, the Town will soon have a new historical tome. The new book, Around Frederick, will be available at Miners Day as well as through many books signings that will be taking place over the next few months.  While the summer Community BBQ Tour has been a big hit, it too will soon be history. The last events take place this month. Be sure to mark your calendar for the first annual Oktoberfest at the Frederick Market on September 26.  Lastly, the Dog Park improvements that have been underway have been going well. We hope that our canine community members, and their friends, will enjoy the park for years to come.  For more information about these and many other activities and issues please visit www.frederickco.gov.

project is funded by impact fees. This project is one piece of the needed improvements/ expansion. If we are able to secure an additional 1% sales tax, we will be able to finish the project all the way to Colorado Blvd and beyond. We are working hard to minimize the negative impacts of current construction and we look forward to the completion later this fall.  As the school year begins, we are excited to once again be working collaboratively with the school district to ensure safety for our children. Please use extra caution when driving.  The Colorado Department of Transportation is looking for solutions to the congestion on I-25. I have participated in a number of meetings to explore various options. One option is to create a managed lane (toll lane) that would help pay for expansion, other options include waiting for funds to be made available through traditional CDOT timelines (2055?) or do nothing. There is no doubt that I-25 expansion

from Hwy 7 to Ft. Collins is long overdue, however, the list of possible solutions is far from complete. Please email me with your ideas and suggestions as we move forward.  Firestone continues to work proactively within the region on a variety of economic development initiatives. We have initiated conversations with a number of developers who are looking to develop property in our planning area. While the dialogue has just begun, I am encouraged by the possibilities.  Firestone launched our new website this month. Please take a moment to check out this improved communication tool. www.ci.firestone.co.us  Coffee Talk? Advice, complaints, ideas, questions etc... for the Mayor? Please send me an email and I will do my best to schedule a time for us to chat over coffee. I look forward to visiting with concerned citizens about the issues that matter to them. Don’t Rely on a Candy Bar: Why Women Runners Should Carry a Weapon

Contributed by Kelly Curtis When I saw the white Suburban, I knew it was a mistake crossing the last road and continuing south on the railroad tracks. Still, the evening’s golden light across the alfalfa fields, the purple sky, and the fresh air beckoned me. I was in a new town, still learning the streets and the best places to run, and trying to avoid the California desert’s mid-day heat. I gave a curt wave to the men in the SUV and wondered if men get irritated with women who dismiss them without so much as a glance. I double-checked they continued to fly down the road away from me. I plowed forward on the tracks, determined to work off two candy bars from earlier in the day. It wasn’t twenty yards later when my skin began to tingle. Call it intuition. If those men turned around and drove the tracks, they could catch me in seconds. I didn’t want to cross the road where I’d last seen them, so I took my knife from my bra and gripped it tight, something I do when I see cougar tracks back home. I picked up the pace too. I would finish the mile of tracks, get to the highway, and make it home. Something told me to have a plan, so I decided if they came down the tracks, I would duck through the barbwire into the field where they would have to pursue me on foot. Probably thanks to the candy bars, the run was going well. I felt fast and energetic. The sun disappeared behind the horizon and I let my mind wander. I thought about writing the next chapter of my novel. I thought about my friend whose lovable baby has entered the terribletwos. I thought about my bad decision to run so late in the day. I was isolated by fields. It was a good half-mile to help in either direction. I didn’t know my cross streets and no one was waiting for me at home. I was halfway to the highway, clipping at an even pace, when I saw the white Suburban. The men had come for me. My intuition was right. For a long time, I was reluctant to carry a phone while running, but several months ago, I succumbed to my husband’s pleadings. I thought about calling him in Colorado, but as the men turned up the tracks, and dust spun up from the Suburban’s tires, I knew there was no time. I ducked through the barbed wire and dialed 911. They must have seen me go through the fence, because they turned, headed parallel to the field, and made another attempt to cut me off. I went back out to the tracks and ran. Between breaths, the best I could tell the dispatcher was that I was just south of town, on the tracks, east of the highway, running away from a mobile home park. It must have been somewhere in there that I dropped my knife. I was home before I realized I hadn’t put it back in my bra. Two men were chasing me in a truck and the best lifeline I had was my phone and however fast those candy bars would let me run. The 911 dispatcher sent out two police and kept me on the phone. When I approached the road where I’d first seen the men, I saw a white SUV waiting by the tracks. It might have been the police, but at the time I was sure the men had parked and were waiting for me. The dispatcher told me to go to the road to meet the police, but I hadn’t seen any lights or heard any sirens and she couldn’t confirm it was police at the tracks. I dropped into a willowy bush and crawled again through the barbed wire into the field. From the watery ditch, I saw the first police cruiser, a quarter-mile away, at the mobile home park. I ran through the alfalfa, toward the officer and took my chances of being hit by rifle-fire. Truth was, I didn’t think the men were that motivated. They saw the easy prey I’d allowed myself to become and didn’t pursue beyond that. By the time I met the police, the men were gone. I gave the police a brief report and ran home, soaked and muddy in torn clothes. A few cuts in my skin ached from the barbed wire. The police followed and ensured I made it home. They patrolled my street a few times that night. I felt blessed to be alive, not still out in that field, not another statistic. Scenes from that evening and its other possible outcomes haunted me all night. At 9:00 the next morning, I went to my local Sherriff’s office and applied for a concealed carry permit. Three days since being chased, I’m back out on the road. I can’t give it up. I can be smarter about it. I can run in the morning or with a partner. I need to learn the roads and tell people where I’m going, but I won’t stop going. If I’m smart enough and lucky enough, I’ll never have to draw a weapon, but I refuse to rely on luck any longer. If I do draw, it’s my right to being a healthy, happy woman that I’ll defend. Senior, Shyanna Neu was invited to play the game she has played since kindergarten in Denver in and All State tournament this past spring. From that tournament, she was invited to play in the US Junior Nationals Tournament in Columbus Ohio this past July. "My family thought it would be a good idea to accept the invitation because we have family there that can't usually watch me play and because it would be a good experience for me to play with other girls from around the country." says Neu. She was coached by the head women's coach from Arcadia University in Philadelphia who played her at the Center position because Shyanna was one of the stronger girls on their team. Shyanna is used to playing more of a guard positionbut does play post as her coach Roger Dufour needs her to in high school. "It was definitely different playing center in that I was constantly in the paint and had much more body contact from bigger girls than I am used to. I got pretty sore - but focussed on boxing out and rebounding and that seemed to work pretty well." Personally, Neu feels she learned the importance of "TEAM" and that if it is necessary, she can truly play any position needed on the court. "The whole experience helped my confidence and I plan to take that with me to help my high school team this year. I was also happy that so many of my family and friends from Ohio were able to come and see me play. It's great to have that support!" Shyanna was awarded MVPfor her team and won the Hot Shot contest shooting and making the most shots from 8 specified spots on the floor within 30 seconds.

Chainsaw Carvings Now Placed Around Frederick

The first ever chainsaw woodcarving competition in Frederick was a huge success. As part of the evening festivities at Frederick in Flight, the woodcarvers entertained the crowd with a quick carve competition in addition to having their finished pieces on display for the judging panel and public to vote on. The first place winner was Robert C. Waits with his piece entitled “Basket Dancer.” All carvings are now placed around the Town of Frederick. Drive or walk around and take a look at them. We wanted to give you a look into the man behind the winning piece. Waits is a self taught artist carving wood, stone and glass since 1989, but picked up a chainsaw for the first time in 1993. In the past 20 years, he has won and placed in many chainsaw carving competitions including a few Artist’s Choice and People’s Choice awards along the way. His wood carvings have been featured on HGTV and the Outdoor Channel and have been sold around the world. With his unlimited imagination and amazing talent, Waits can carve almost anything, from a one inch ivory whale to a 16 foot tall tree covered in chainsaw carved owls. He also does his fair share of glass etchings, stone carvings, airbrushing, ice sculpture, clay sculpture and acrylic painting. Waits was born and raised in beautiful Lander, Wyoming, where he met his wife and raised their three children together. Just this year, he has started the new leg of his artistic journey ; he is now a traveling artist, going directly to his customers homes to carve their dead standing trees. To contact Waits or to see his amazing works of art, please visit www.RCWaitsArt.com. We hope to see Robert C. Waits back in Frederick next summer!

"It's been a good twenty years, a good run, but this is a young man's game," Brady said. While explaining his planned retirement to his 10-year old daughter Brady said that she asked him if he'd be home during holidays and at night. "I said, yes," Brady said. "She shrugged her shoulders and said, I'm for it." His future plans are not entirely clear save for one thing. "I'm going to spend a lot of time on the front porch with a 10-year old," he said. "I know that you've taken your job very seriously and that you're dedicated to what you do," Mayor Sherry Carran said to Brady. Chief Jones also announced the hiring of two new officers which was approved by the city commission to fill new positions created in this year's budget. Zachary Burton, 25, of Highland Heights, and Joseph Gier, 23, of Ludlow, will start their training at the police academy on July 29. His uncle and grandfather served previously. Detoxify Your Body For Life

Maintaining a toxin-free body is more than just cleaning out your system just once. No, I'm not talking about a colon cleanse, I'm talking about full body detoxification. Detoxifying the whole body includes a healthy lifestyle of good nutrition, exercise, reducing stress, being watchful of the products you put in and on your body, as well as having a healthy non-toxic home. There are many benefits of detoxifying your body which include improvement in the function of major organs, lowering your risk of many diseases, an improved immune system, circulation, metabolism, energy, and brain function just to name a few. Whether you’re struggling with your weight, challenged with a health diagnosis, or you're trying to improve your overall health, learning some easy steps that you can do on a daily basis to detoxify your body will help jump start you on a journey of improved health and wellness. In September, be a part of our private Facebook group that will join in with a Certified Nutritionist for a free month long challenge that teaches you to detoxify your body for life. Below are the key areas that will be discussed: Nutrition: Fast food and pre-packaged snacks have become an easy go-to for many. You'll learn which foods are toxic that can lead to inflammation and ultimately disease, and replace them with healthy alternatives. Find out about proteins, carbohydrates, fats, gluten, dairy, sugars, water, and more. Stress: When you're stressed you can't live life to your fullest potential, so take time to recharge our body, mind and soul. You'll learn ways to start reducing your stress, including exercise and more, so you can experience a healthy life from the inside out. Toxic Chemicals Are All Around You: Your skin is the largest organ in your body and can absorb up to 60 percent of whatever is applied to it, and that eventually goes straight into your bloodstream and cells. You'll learn what toxic, synthetic chemicals to avoid and what other options you have for a healthier you. Many EPA studies indicate that elevated concentration of household chemicals persists in the air, and long-term exposure to chemicals inside our homes may be harmful to us and our families. By reducing toxic chemicals in the home, certain respiratory problems like asthma, allergies and skin irritations can improve including our overall well-being.

2nd Annual Full Moon 5k & Festival

Race Presenters Town of Firestone, Anytime Fitness-Firestone and Longmont United Hospital Foundation to Raise Awareness for Colon Cancer Full Moon 5k & Festival race presenters from the Town of Firestone and Anytime Fitness-Firestone are excited to present the second annual event on Sept. 7, 2013. The race and festival raises money for colon cancer awareness and benefits the Longmont United Hospital Foundation. This year’s Full Moon 5k & Festival runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Firestone Regional Sports Complex, 6850 Tilbury Ave. The 5k starts at 8:30 a.m. and a kids’ fun run is set for 9:30 a.m. Festival attendees will also be able to enjoy activities throughout the day, which will include a variety of business and nonprofit vendors, fitness activities, health fair screenings, games, face painting, balloons, a caricature artist, inflatables, great food and more. Outstanding live entertainment throughout the day will include the inspiring rock sounds of Bailout!, modern country duo Kelly Aspen and Brandon Sipes, and classic rock from Case in Point. The Full Moon 5k utilizes the Firestone trail system, is chip timed and certified by the USA Track and Field Association. “Supporting those in need is tremendously important to Firestone,” said Firestone Mayor Chad Auer. “The Firestone Full Moon 5k is another example of how we are stepping up and doing our part to help raise money for colon cancer research. I look forward to running it again this year with even more participation from our community.” In its first year, the Full Moon 5k had 195 runners participate and brought awareness to colon cancer, which is the third leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States and is equally common in men and women. With recommended screening, colon cancer can be prevented by removing polyps before they become cancerous or detected early when it can be more easily and successfully treated. Nicole Grine, owner of Anytime Fitness-Firestone, said, “Being a part of the effort to fight back against a disease that affects so many, is an honor. Most of us know someone who has battled cancer, so it is personally touching to celebrate those who are winning the battle against colon cancer and to save more lives by promoting early detection through more education and research.” The Full Moon 5k was organized by family and friends in honor of Firestone resident Sindy Angelovich, who was diagnosed with colon cancer on Dec. 16, 2011, at the age of 48. She went through surgery that month at Longmont United Hospital to remove a mass from her colon along with 31 lymph nodes. Fortunately, only three of the 31 lymph nodes were compromised with the disease. She went through chemotherapy from January to June 2012 at Rocky Mountain Cancer Centers and continues to fight the good fight with family and friends on her side. To run the race, registration is $30 through Sept. 5 at 12 p.m. Then registration increases to $35 through race day. To register for the race, visit http://full-moon5k.com/.

Firestone Ranks in the Top 25 Best Places to Live by Money Magazine

The Town of Firestone was recently ranked number 24 among the Best Places to Live among America’s Small Towns by Money Magazine. The story, which was released Aug. 12 online at http://cnnmon.ie/15w8jCI, highlights the top 50 small towns that made the list. Firestone was noted for its 432 percent population increase between 2000 and 2010 due to its low taxes and new housing developments. The community was also highlighted for its open spaces, outdoor recreational opportunities and growing economy. Mayor Chad Auer said this is a tremendous honor for Firestone to be recognized among the top 25 communities in the nation. “In my opinion, this is a testament to the community. Since taking office in 2008, I have continually been impressed with the sense of pride in Firestone. A neighbor helping each other is the norm. We work together, compete together, get in shape together and support each other,” Auer said. “We also value fiscal responsibility, we honor veterans and we celebrate America together. I know I am biased, but I am really proud to live in Firestone and this community deserves this recognition.” Town Manager Wesley LaVanchy said, “I believe this honor is a tribute to the dedicated staff, volunteers and citizens in Firestone, as well as the authentic leadership from elected officials, boards and commissions.” Money Magazine used statistics from data services company Onboard Informatics and other sources to compile the list of 2013 Best Places to Live. Screenings included U.S. towns with populations between 10,000 and 50,000, medium family income, job growth, housing appreciation and affordability, safety, schools, health care and economy.

ACCENT YOUR LIFE

Perk Up a Room with an Accent Wall

Painting one wall in a room a differently from the other walls is an inexpensive way to add visual interest to that room. How do you know which wall to paint? Typically the wall you see when you enter a room Is the focal wall so it would be the easiest choice for an accent wall. But there are other factors you can consider. Walls with large windows, built-ins, fireplaces, art work or other special features are also good choices, but you don’t want them to overwhelm the accent color. If they take up the whole wall already, you may want to choose an adjacent wall. What color? Many of our clients keep it simple by choosing a color that is two or three shades darker than the rest of the room. You can also pull colors from an area rug, fabrics on your upholstery or drapes or art or accessories within the room. Remember basic color theory for other reasons: Light, perception and temperature. Colors such as blues, greens and purples will push an accent wall painted in those colors away from you and would be good choices for smaller rooms. These cooler colors will

Page 11

also make the room seem cooler and darker. Colors such as reds, oranges and yellows can make that accent wall seem closer to you and are safer for a large room. These warm colors will brighten up that room but can also heat it up. Painting a side wall orange can make a room feel narrower but painting an end wall in a long, narrow room will make the room feel more balanced. The same can be said with the cool colors - you can make a short room seem longer or a narrow room feel wider by painting an end wall or a side wall in a cool color. You can instantly change the mood in your room with one accent wall. If you still aren’t sure what to do, ask your painting contractor. He is a professional and has the experience to help with your choices. For more information call Tim Zaerr at Blue Parrot Painting at 303.678.8442 or visit www.blueparrotpainting.com.

Julie Hicks has New Music CD Available NOW

By April Fordyce Blewett Sometimes in life we catch ourselves humming a small tune, struggling to hear the words; and at other moments the words flow as if they were always meant to be sung. From young to old and every walk of life, music speaks to most of us…to our hearts and to our souls. For some, there is a struggle to understand how these small moments happen and for many of us it is these moments we find peace within. In these moments there are answers to questions and directions to the lost.

These small, yet many moments grounded Julie DeVriesHicks. After a life time of push and pull, tug-of-wars with Christ, she found herself. Or should I say, she allowed herself to be found. By the grace of God, all those who knock at the door shall be opened…it is up to us to knock first and then take the steps in. Her life story is one that reflects many of us; taking life for granted, not caring for the body we live in and not allowing our passion, our gifts to drive us toward the life meant for us. But despite her many mistakes in life, Julie gave in to the love, acceptance and security of Lord, our God. Her life experiences include divorce, alcohol and even nearly dying. But she has allowed God to take all those things and mold them into something beautiful, for herself, her family and others. Julie started writing music in 2006. She makes it clear that it is a gift of God and only by His grace. She added children’s songs in 2010 and published her first CD in the last month or so. Her hope is to help children learn about Jesus at an earlier age through the joy of song. Her gift has evolved into a business where she not only writes personal poetry but writes memorials and custom wedding songs for others. She enjoys taking someone’s life and writing about it in a way that only the Lord can help her achieve. Music from Him has become an opportunity for others to find a way to share about their life. With the gift graced by God and your personal message, Julie helps you write the song for your special moment. Melodious words that say this love is forever or I will see you soon. She’ll help you come up with notes that bless the lost one or a cheery tune for a special moment that can’t be missed- God and Julie are here for you. Music from Him is there to support anyone who knows, or wants to know Jesus. Plus, anyone who wants to honor a loved one with personal words, but just don’t know how. “You can achieve what the Lord wants you to achieve, no

matter how impossible it seems,” says Julie. Julie was born in Denver, but moved to a farm on Road 11 at the age of three. Since then she has lived in a two mile radius of the Carbon Valley and has never really left the area. Her husband owns Home Services with Integrity LLC, or HSwL for short, in Firestone, CO. She has two amazing boys; one is 25-years-old the other is 8-years-old. One of Julie’s little reminders that God truly does have a sense of humor. Whether at home with her family, or being a fisher of men and fish on the banks of the river, you will always hear the small tunes from our Lord flowing through Julie. Julie’s most memorable experience since being in business was at church one Sunday morning, a little girl skipped by her and she was singing one of the songs on the CD, “Knock, Knock, Knock.” I’ll never forget how I felt… what an honor,” Julie says. Contact Julie any time, for any reason. Whether for have a special occasion you are looking for a personal song, or simply desire to know more about our Lord and savior. She is there for you. CD’s are available on www.CDBaby.com and www. iTunes.com, just search for “Music From Him.” Locals can contact Julie via her website and Julie will make sure you get a copy. She is releasing her new CD and it is available by donation locally. She would love for anyone who wants one to have one. Her website is www.musicfromHim.com.

Are You Breaking The Rules?

One of the first things I teach people about social media is that there are unwritten, unspoken rules that are similar to the rules one follows at a party. What are they? 1. Don't bore me. 2. Don't irritate me. 3. Don't hard-sell me. If your posts do these things, you'll find that you're losing friends. They won't tell you they're going away, they'll just click "Unlike" or "Unfriend". Ritchie Brothers

By April Fordyce Blewett In need of some large equipment and want more bang for your buck. Consider the Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers. What once was a small furniture store has blossomed over the years into the world largest used and new equipment auction sellers. Whether you are looking for construction, mining, transportation, agriculture equipment, or anything in between, the Ritchie Bros. are sure to have it. All equipment is sold with no minimum bid or reserved prices and every item is sold to the highest bidder on auction day. Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers began as a small family-run business in Kelowna, British Columbia, Canada. The three brothers—Ken, Dave, John—conduct their first unreserved auction in 1958, selling CA$2,000 of surplus inventory from their furniture store to pay a bank debt. The brothers soon progress beyond furniture and begin conducting more regular auctions. In 1963 they conduct their first unreserved industrial auction, selling US$600,000 worth of equipment. As demand for the company's unreserved auction services increase, Ritchie Bros. begins to expand across North America. It opens its first office outside Canada in 1969 in Washington State, followed by its first United States auction in Beaverton, Oregon in 1970. With its unreserved auctions well accepted within Canada, Ritchie Bros. opens its first permanent auction site in Edmonton, Alberta. In 1998 first US$1 billion year, and they become a publicly listed company on the New York Stock Exchange. In 2002 online bidding service introduced which quickly allowed equipment buyers the convenience of bidding online in real time. Another way they help to keep your pet healthy is by providing dental services and also acupuncture. Plus, they sell supplies and pet food. Pawz Veterinary Clinic is able to care for your pets inside and out, all in one facility. Veterinarian, Dawn Reiter, says one of the best things about her job is that she gets to bring her dogs to work with her every day. Dawn’s love for animals grew during her upbringing on a rural farm in Nebraska. While she says there are too many other great things to mention about her work, she added, “My my employees are like family, the clients in this area are fabulous, and I get to help dogs and cats everyday.” She shared one other special item, “We worked with Pug rescue to nurse back to health a neglected, diabetic, blind pug named Addison. We spayed her, removed some masses, and cleaned her teeth, and controlled her diabetes. She is now ready to be adopted to a new loving family.” In her spare time, Dawn plays Roller Derby in Fort Collins and she enjoys riding her motorcycle. She is especially fond of spending time with her two beagles, friends and family. Where is this amazing new clinic located? It’s in the King Scooper’s shopping center on the south side. Pawz is not affiliated with the previous pet hospital in the same location but they are able to transfer records from other clinics. Contact information: • M, Tue, Thur, Fri 8-5:30. Wed 10-7. Frederick Wins Law & Order Magazine Award

The Frederick Police Department is pleased to announce their new police vehicle has been named the Best Chevy Caprice in Law & Order Magazine’s 2013 Police Vehicle Design Contest. According to Law & Order Magazine, the competition was impressive with more than 200 entries vying for top honors. A committee of officers helped create the new design, which incorporates the mountain views enjoyed from Frederick. They chose block letters in a strong font, representing the safety Frederick Police provides. A functional detail of the new design was adding the town’s website to the back of the car, informing residents where they can find more information about the town and the police department. The unique and most important aspect of the overall design: it was created by police officers who live in and serve Frederick and wanted the community to be accurately reflected in the design, as well as reassured that Frederick is being kept safe which is reinforced by the strong graphics. “I’m so proud of the collaboration that went into our new design,” said Frederick Chief of Police, Gary Barbour. “I appreciate this respected publication giving our team national recognition for it.” The officers’ team effort didn’t end with creating the design. Officer Andy Fairbanks found the contest and took the initiative to submit Frederick’s design for consideration while Officer Steve Walje took the submitted photo, highlighting the car and the Frederick community.

Watching Over the Carbon Valley Area

By Summer Stair “You have to live out the motto to have the motto work,” is not only a common statement one might hear FrederickFirestone Fire Protection District Fire Chief Ted Poszywak say, but it is one he truly believes and lives by especially when it comes to the Fire District’s motto of, “Duty, Honor, Compassion.” On first glance, it is notable that Chief Poszywak lives and breathes what he teaches. His commanding presence makes others turn to him in a room, but his welcoming demeanor makes one quickly realize how approachable he is and that he is just there doing his duty. Dale Ingraham, Administrative Manager for the Fire District, started working with Chief Poszywak when he came to the Fire District in December 2005. “I have worked with Fire Chief Poszywak since the day he started. I remember the day he arrived for his first interview and thinking he was arrogant. I later learned he was just very nervous,” she says. “I have been learning from him ever since.” And ask anyone at the Fire District and they will tell you the same. Chief Poszywak has a way of making you want to be a better person not only for him, but for yourself and for others. You suddenly want to strive to become who he knows you can be. Since coming to the Fire District, Chief Poszywak has added a consistency to dealing with every day issues in a very diverse work force and work environment. “When you go to him with a question or problem, he listens, remains calm and receptive, does not rush to blame or judge, weighs the good and the bad, asks for your reasons and suggested solutions, and sometimes respectively agrees to disagree,” Ingraham says. “We all know the Fire Service has a lot of rules. He has reminded people of those rules and helped them play by the rules. And he treats everyone accordingly.” Chief Poszywak has helped and encouraged the Fire District’s members by providing a vision, standards, policies, procedures, checklists and guidelines so that each member knows

what is expected of him or her. “He has a way of encouraging you to confront your weaknesses and take advantage of your strengths,” Ingraham says. “He is the embodiment of ‘Do the right thing, for the right reason, every time.’” Battalion Chief Mike Reasoner agrees. “I think the most important thing that Fire Chief Poszywak has brought to the District is a higher level of integrity and honesty,” Chief Reasoner says. “Fire Chief has taken the District to a new level. The opportunities to become a better leader with his mentoring have been invaluable to me. I also believe that his level of holding everyone accountable for their actions, no matter who they are or what position they may hold, has changed the department for the better.” While Chief Poszywak has done a lot for the Fire District and its members, he also works daily to be proactive in his day-to-day dealings with business leaders, community members and the anchor communities that the Fire District serves. One of the main ways he has done this is by establishing a greater transparency of what goes on at the Fire District. He has a knack for earning trust and respect wherever he goes. But if you were to ask Chief Poszywak about his workings in the Fire Service he would just say it is his job and that being a part of the Fire Service is a privilege. His favorite part about it is the sense of purpose that comes with serving people in their time of need. “It’s one of those jobs that gives back more than it takes; it’s about service to others in their time of need, emergency or not. It’s who we are, not what we do,” Chief Poszywak says. Aside from running the day-to-day operations for the Fire District, Chief Poszywak is a member of the Weld County Regional Communications Advisory Board, as well as the Weld County South Sector Representative and Executive Board Member for the Weld County Fire Chiefs’ Association. Chief Poszywak holds a degree from Coastal Carolina University, and is a graduate of the National Fire Academy Executive Fire Officer Program. Outside of work, Chief Poszywak enjoys travelling, spending time with his family and anything that has to do with history. Chief Poszywak will have been married to his wife Erin for 14 years on September 25, and credits his faith as the foundation and focus of his values and how he lives. “Faith has taught me first and foremost that I am a constant work in progress, but the key is that this life is not about living to satisfy my own desires, it’s about living for and caring for others. You cannot just believe in it; you must strive everyday to live it. When you fall, get back up and never give up.” Originally from the Detroit, Michigan area, he moved to North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina while in high school and started volunteering in the local fire department during his senior year.

Teaching Kids the Value of Going Local

By April Atwood The "support local" message is catching on more than ever America and as we continue to become better educated regarding the positive economic benefits of shifting our spending to locally-owned businesses, it's apparent these habits need to be preserved and nurtured among our youth. Luckily for parents, there’s a ready-made audience for teaching the support-local message. Yes, we’re talking about your children. Those crumb-snatching little rascals represent the future of our country, and passing on your sound habits is the easiest way to create a generation of concious shoppers. However, trying to teach your child good habits can be like attempting a complicated gymnastics routine with no formal training. So instead of adding another thing to nag your child about, employing a "show instead of tell" method can help you get them make it habitual to support your community. For example: 1. Take them with you on local shopping outings Actions speak louder than words, especially to children. When your finger-biting habit suddenly becomes your kid’s finger-biting habit, this becomes frighteningly obvious. And the same goes for your spending habits. Almost all kids know Target and Chuck-E-Cheese, but how many can name the locallyowned options in their area? Just one look at your own shopping habits will give you an idea of the values you're passing down to your children. Supporting local is a learned behavior, so make it a point to support local with the kids in tow, showing off the diversity and uniqueness of your local business community. This might mean altering your routine to include small businesses for regular items. 2. Visit the farmer’s market Mary Poppins was right when she said that an element of fun can make any

chore seem enticing. And so, instead of going on about the various reasons to always choose local first, why not take your kids to the veritable wonderland of local fare that is the farmer’s market. Because many are on weekend mornings, you can easily fit in at least one trip a month with the kids. At most markets you’ll find everything from locally grown produce to handmade hats, and a great outpouring of community support. The farmer’s market also allows for a much more interactive shopping experience. Allowing your children to help you shop at the farmer’s markets can teach sound economic decisions, and hopefully an appreciation for fresh fruits and vegetables. Not only that, but interacting with farmers and merchants will give your kids a sense of connection to the products they are purchasing. 3. Get them involved in the community Supporting local is more than just where you shop. Becoming a part of the community can lead to lifelong habits. Summertime is the perfect time to engender great local habits in your children, with something as simple as taking part in locally run day camps for kids; visiting children’s author readings at local bookstores; or family outings to a local art walk. A deep connection with your community usually begins in childhood, and it can last a lifetime if you make the effort to teach your child simple local shopping habits. Carbon Valley's Callico

By April Fordyce Blewett Sometimes we look back on our younger years and it feels like a life time ago. Whether we are thinking about how care free we once where or how life seemed to be full of possibilities, we felt alive. For Callico Neu, it wasn’t a reflection on her past, but a glimpse of her future that struck a need to reevaluate life. To look at her younger past self and find inspiration. One time when Callico was out of town and stepped on a scale in her hotel room, she discovered that she had not only put on a few pounds but was on the verge off two hundred pounds. Though in Callico’s younger years she was always active and sporty, her life as a wife and mother of four had given her ample opportunity to indulge in one of her favorite past times; food. Then one of her friends asked her to go walking and jogging and introduced her to Zumba Fitness. “I began to remember how much I loved dancing and feeling the burn and breathing heavy,” Callico said. She soon became a licensed Zumba Basic 1 instructor and realized that there where many out there that shared her same passions for movement. She was enjoying helping others enjoy fitness and get results so much that Callico added Zumba Basic 2, Zumbatomic and Zumba in the Circuit. Then she went on to get certified as a Group Fitness Instructor, took a few online injury prevention courses and a Preparatory Personal Training Course. Recently, she added Belly Dance certification and will continue with an on-line weight training course and then a Personal Trainer Certification in February. Soon it will be the four-year-anniversary of her beginning to help others as she learned what worked for her as a busy wife, mom and volunteer in so many other areas of her life. Callico developed and opened a non-profit for teens called THAT PLACE and enjoys spending time doing fitness classes with the teens there. “Working with athletes is another passion of mine as I am a basketball coach at Frederick High School and have four active teens myself!” she says. You can also often find her in the high school PE class for a day working with the students or at an elementary school dancing with the younger kids. It is her hope to help others achieve their fitness goals. Whether it’s losing weight, toning up, having more energy,

or just feeling better overall. She loves it when the people she is working with tell her what their goals are and then celebrating with them when they reach them! Important Considerations When Buying a Home Coming Soon!

Buying a home is often a long-term commitment and understanding which home is a good fit for you is not always easy. Here are some important things to consider when buying a home:

First class is FREE for any class..... so getting 2 free classes (one Triple Threat and one Zumba) in a week is easy! What do you have to lose? :) Anyone can have a FUN FIT LIFE. Let me show you how.

Heirloom, Hybrid, GMO’s – What’s the Difference?

The definition of Heirloom is often open to dispute. However, the term is usually applied to fruit, flower or vegetable varieties that were being grown before World War II. Heirloom seeds are always open-pollinated varieties. This means that if the seeds produced from the plant are properly saved, they will produce the same variety year after year. A hybrid seed is produced by artificially cross pollinating two genetically different plants of the same species, such as two different tomatoes or two varieties of corn. The cross pollination is done by hand, and a seed that is saved will not grow true to either parent. With hybrids, the seed produced from the plants will either be sterile, or start to revert back to the parent plants. A person would need to purchase your seeds new, each year for best results. Genetically Modified Organisms or GMO seed have been altered using DNA from completely different species and organisms to give different traits, such as resistance to herbicides and acceptance of chemical fertilizers. Some DNA donors have come from fish, frogs and bacteria. The major edible crops that are genetically modified are corn, soybeans, alfalfa, papaya, canola, and sugar beets. These seeds, when saved, are also sterile. How can you determine what you are buying while shopping at the grocery store? First, if you are concerned about eating GMO’s, always look for certified organic food or foods stamped with the Non-GMO project verified logo. Certified Organic foods are not allowed to be genetically modified at this time. Anything made with corn, soybeans, alfalfa, papaya, canola, and sugar beets, if not organic or stamped, is most likely a GMO. Estimates show that at least 70% of processed food contains modified crops. When shopping for fresh produce, you can learn to read the labels. A four digit code on the sticker tells you that the fruit or vegetable is conventionally grown (not organic) but is not genetically modified. A five digit code beginning with a 9, tells you that the produce is organically grown. A five digit code beginning with an 8, means that the produce is genetically modified. GM squashes have recently been introduced into the food supply, and testing is being done on many more. If you have any questions, please stop by and see us at Rooted in Colorado, your local good food garden center. When buying a home, think about how long you’ll be living there. Will you be starting a family in the next couple of years? Will you be downsizing? Make sure the home has the amount of rooms and square footage that you desire now and in the future. Check storage capacity. Is there enough room for your tools? Kids toys? Shoes and clothes? United Way Of Weld County Pacesetter Companies Announced

Greeley, Colo. – United Way of Weld County’s mission is to improve lives by mobilizing the caring power of our community. Organic We improve lives through focusing funding Hormone and programming Free on community needs assessments to advance the education, financial stability and health of everyone in Weld County. The second half of that mission statement is reliant upon individuals and companies in our community. Unfortunately, there is more need than there are resources. In Weld County, as with many other regions, 25% of the population utilizes services while just over 2% contributes. “Imagine the lives that would change if 4% gave…it would be phenomenal!” said Gary Burton, Chairman of the 2013-14 United Way of Weld County Community Giving Campaign. The goal for this campaign is to actively connect with the community and receive donations from 9,282 donors. According to Upstate Colorado, there are 137,394 employed individuals out of the nearly 252,000 residents in Weld County. “We have to face the fact that we are woefully short on educating the total community and reaching the residents in our community who chose for one reason or another not to support United Way,” Burton added. Giving doesn’t have to hurt the pocket book to make an impact. Payroll deduction is a great way to split your contribution up throughout the year. It also helps in that the donation is made before pay is received, which ensures the allocation is made. Ask your employer about payroll deduction or a United Way of Weld County workplace campaign to get started. Some companies have already started. Weld County businesses and organizations who have agreed to participate early are recognized at Pacesetters for United Way of Weld County. They serve as an example to other businesses and organizations of what is possible when citizens are invested in their community. “The Pacesetter campaign is a preliminary fundraiser to help get a feel for the economy and set the pace for the upcoming campaign,” said Burton. “When the community sees these companies support our efforts, it encourages them to also participate.” For the 2013/2014 fiscal year, companies that have committed to holding an early campaign are: Advantage Bank; Alphagraphics/Safe Site; Ameriprise Financial; Anderson & Whitney, P.C.; Cache Bank & Trust; City of Greeley; Connecting Point; Ehrlich Family Dealerships; Envision; FMS Bank; Ghent Chevrolet Cadillac; Hensel Phelps Construction; JBS USA - Beef Plant; JBS USA - Corporate; John Elway Dealership; National Board of Chiropractic Examiners; Phelps –Tointon; Professional Finance Company; Sears Real Estate; Silveredge; Spradley Barr Ford & Lincoln of Greeley; The Tribune; Weld County Garage; Windsor State Bank These organizations and companies help United Way of Weld County advance the common good by creating opportunities for a better life for everyone in Weld County. Our focus is education, income and health -- the building blocks for a good quality of life. Workplace campaigns don’t have to be with large companies. A company of any size can be a Pacesetter. Companies and individuals that are interested in donating or holding a Workplace Campaign can contact Eva Keaton, Resource Development Director at 970-353-4300 ext. 2562. TOTALLY

A Fresh Shower

Growing up on an Iowa farm, we often had chores to do that left us filthy and sweaty. Whether it was cleaning a chicken house or a pigpen, walking the corn or beans for weeds, or digging postholes for a new fence, there were a variety of malodorous smells that clung to your body and permeated your nose- plus your jeans evidenced you’d been “playing in the dirt”. Few things were as satisfying as coming to the house to clean up and remove those offending odors from both your clothes and your body. It always felt refreshing to emerge from the cleansing waters (along with a wee bit of soap) and again join civilization as an acceptable participant free from your own smelly background experiences. There is a similar dilemma for each of us in this life. Participating in a great variety of what the Bible calls “sins”, we are left in the sight of God very filthy and offensive. All sin is offensive to God- He doesn’t differentiate between big ones and small ones- and if we are left to ourselves we shall die in our sins and remain apart from God for all eternity. Now that is a serious problem which needs to be addressed with some degree of urgency, since none of us can dictate the time of our departure from this life into the next. What can we do to “shower” ourselves and be rid of the odor and offense of sin? The acceptable cure has similarities to the way we get cleaned up to go somewhere. It begins with our getting naked before the Lord- not in this case a strip show to amuse our Creator, but a ‘baring of our soul’ in His presence. Then we need to use the right kind of ‘soap’ in order to be certain our sins are washed away permanently. The very idea of standing naked before God may leave us extremely nervous and concerned, and unless we have understood that the Remedy He has provided for us will forever eliminate our sin problem, we will indeed have reason for fright- Scripture tells us “it is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God.” When I first became aware of God’s cure for my sin, I didn’t want to submit myself. I’d spent 23

years without this type of bath, and wasn’t sure it was for me. Upon further review, and the testimonies of dozens who had taken the eternal shower provided by Jesus on the cross, I chose to find out if indeed this would work for me. I knew with certainty that I qualified as a sinner, and I had no firm answers for the problem on my own. Understanding Jesus was the remedy I’d been searching for was like finding that perfect bath bar that leaves you smelling fresh and clean and ready to face life’s challenges, and so I ‘took the plunge’ in 1970 and have not experienced a day of regret since. Just like coming out of the shower or bath invigorated, I came away from my commitment to Christ refreshed and delighted. Since that evening my life has taken many twists and turns but my Lord has guided me constantly. No more stench in my nostrils or His, because the Son of God took away all my sin and gave me a reservation in Heaven. I used ‘Jesus soap’ and came out fresh and clean. He is the only guaranteed way to eliminate the odor of our sin that alienates God from us and us from God. If you still worry about how you will do when your time comes to stand before God and give an account for your life, you’d better take a ‘shower’ before you depart. This eternal cleansing will leave you longing for Heaven instead of dreading what your reception might be like. And none who comes into the presence of God smelling like His Son Jesus will be rejected from residence there. It’s all about taking that fresh shower while you can make the choice. Today would be a good day to get your life cleaned up and ready for all your tomorrows. I urge you to do so. G-Free Diet Trend

Everyone has suddenly decided that going on a Gluten-free diet is the answer to all of their dieting prayers. On every grocery store shelf, there is an endless amount of options to suit the needs of the gluten-free movement. Dunkin doughnuts and Dominoes pizza are just a few fast food chains that have added gluten-free options for the masses. But, does the gluten-free diet offer weight loss incentives? Is this just another diet craze that everyone is latching on to in hopes to lose weight? There are real medical issues attached to the need to go gluten-free. A few of these medical issues are Celiac Disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, and autoimmune thyroid issues. These medical issues make it a necessity to remain gluten-free. Gluten can

303.833.0310

be potentially life threatening to many folks that have these issues. Gluten is a protein found in wheat and related grains species. It gives dough an elastic texture and helps breads and pastas stick to together. Gluten is often used as a “protein” source in vegetarian cultures. It is also found in many hair and dermatological products. About 1 in 133 people develop an allergy to gluten. Gluten may be used in foods in some unexpected ways, for example it may be added as a stabilizing agent or thickener in products such as ice-cream and ketchup. People wishing to follow a completely gluten-free diet must take into consideration the ingredients of any over-the-counter prescription medications and vitamins. Also, cosmetics such as lipstick, lip balms, and lip gloss may contain gluten and need to be investigated before use. Glues used on envelopes may also contain gluten. If you are using Gluten-free products to “lose weight”… think again. Most G-free products are not whole grain and thus are high glycemic (fast carb) foods which can actually cause you to gain weight. A lot of people who start following this diet may eat more processed foods than they used to due to the availability of the gluten-free products like cookies, cakes, and snack foods. If you are using the gluten-free diet to lose weight and you do not have any medical condition that is related to your decision, maybe you should consider getting a nutrition consult to see what would work best for you. I personally follow the Paleo diet due to autoimmune issues and gluten sensitivity. I can help you figure out what plan would work best for you. I can also work with your doctor to determine if you have a need to be completely gluten-free. Give me a call to schedule a nutrition consult if you are unsure about what direction to go in for your nutritional needs. –Shelly N. "Nextera Healthcare delivers all the benefits of a personalized medicine program without being cost-prohibitive. In addition to the dozens of entities now affiliated with Nextera Healthcare, Direct Primary Care is receiving substantial national attention. On the heels of marking Nextera Healthcare’s 800-member milestone, Dr. Flanagan and fellow Nextera Co-Founder Dr. David Tusek, MD, recently attended an invitation-only summit in Washington, DC, to discuss the future of Direct Primary Care with policy makers and thought leaders. “Direct Primary Care is quickly gaining traction here in Colorado and across our nation, as evidenced by our dramatic growth,” says Dr. Tusek. “Nextera Healthcare is honored to welcome the Town of Firestone to our membership ranks and proud to represent Colorado as we lead the way for tangible change in how we deliver health care to our community.”

HEALTHY

Genetically Modified Organisms Continued (article #2)

Last month I mentioned that the most prevalent foods modified by the Round up DNA are: Corn, soybeans, cotton, sugar beets, canola and wheat. These foods are being grown as the GMO variety all over the world. This trend began in 1997 and there is more farmland dedicated to GMO food now than ever before. A search of information shows the following percentages of modified crops in the US alone: Canola – 87% (2005 data) Corn – 86% Cotton – 93% Soybeans – 93% Sugar Beets – 95% Wheat – Unknown Are you a label reader when you shop? If so, you realize that any processed, pre-prepared food contains some type of corn syrup, soy in the form of soy lecithin, soybean oil, canola oil. Some states have been pushing for government regulation on these products. This regulation would force the manufacturers using GMO corn, soy, canola, etc.to label the product “Genetically Modified”. This push has landed on deaf ears which means that shoppers concerned about their health and the health of their families want to look for products that say “No GMO”. There is no legal or regulated definition of Genetically Modified Organisms or Genetically Engineered Organisms. The kicker here is that even if a product is labeled “no GMO” it is legal for that product to contain up to 10% GMO. It is mind-boggling to think that anything we buy that is already prepared has GMO in it. Anything with corn syrup, sugar, canola or soybean is GMO. Any product that contains wheat is GMO. Flour is GMO. Sugar from sugar beets is GMO. That means that the DNA from the toxin “Round Up” which is Glyphosate or glufosinate is in these products. This toxin was developed to KILL CELLS and does not discriminate. How many people do you know that are gluten intolerant? Was that even an issue 20 years ago? Celiac disease is on the rise and so is Parkinson’s, not to mention cancers and autism. What has changed is the food supply. We need more convenient foods, quick and easy. Open a box, nuke it and call it dinner. And if this is not enough to make you think about what you eat, think about the issue of obesity in the US. Corn syrup and sugar are addictive. Once the spike in the bloodstream drops the body craves more. You may feel energized for a short time after ingesting a soft drink or sweet treat but then the blood sugar plummets and leaves you sleepy and listless and wanting another boost. And believe me the manufacturers of “food” products have bought into this addiction. Even grated cheese has corn syrup in it! Why? And let’s take this one step further - corn and soy are in all kinds of animal feed. Even if you buy meat you are not safe. That steak or chop or chicken has more than likely been fed a mixture of GMO grains, not to mention growth hormones. I know that some shake their heads at this dangerous trend in our food supply and think that it is no big deal. It is a huge deal and the United States Government is in bed with the chemical companies so it is not about to change anytime soon. Dee West is a partner in Rocky Plains Quality Meats. For topical use, just cut a garlic clove in half and rub it on the bottom of the feet for athlete’s foot or if you feel a cold or bronchitis coming on. In general, the purple skinned garlic has a stronger action than white.

Cough Syrup

Here is a simple cough syrup that also stimulates the

immune system functionality, opens the nasal passages, dries mucus, decongests the Lungs, and improves digestion: Honey, use 1/2 cup or 5 cups, it just depends upon how much you’d like to make Garlic, quartered is fine, as it will essentially “marinade” in the honey. Use several cloves for larger batches. Cayenne pepper, depending upon how much you make, add little bit at a time, and taste it, you can always add a bit more honey if it is too hot/burning Add orange or lemon peel, if the taste is unsuitable for the tongue (especially little ones) Allow the concoction to rest for a week (or try it after a few hours if you need it quickly, or for children). Remove the garlic and peel and keep in a ball jar for months, as needed. Personally, I leave the garlic in the concoction, but the taste is very strong, so do what you like. There is fabulous honey from the Parker family in Firestone. It can’t get any more fresh or local than that! Child Care Association Comes to Carbon Valley

We are pleased to announce the formation of the Carbon Valley Child Care Association (CVCCA)! CVCCA is focused on helping child care providers have a local network they can rely on for ideas and assistance in all areas of child care. Some of the benefits of having a local association are: • The ability to attend local meetings and trainings without having to drive to other communities after a long day working with children • CVCCA will provide guest speakers/trainings monthly who will give information that will count towards the 15 hours of continuing education child care providers need annually. • Meetings will be held locally to accommodate providers’ work hours. • The CVCCA will assure that Medication Administration, Universal Precautions, First Aid, and CPR will be provided annually. • The CVCCA will also be available to parents to get referrals for licensed child care providers in and around their area. • The CVCCA will assure referral services to all members for free. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month in the Carbon Valley Library meeting room. The next meeting will be September 10th at 6:30. Come join us and meet some local providers, get some training and learn more about the association. If you have questions or would like to find out more about the association, please contact: Julia Brink at 720-226-6385 or Vicki Athmann at 303-833-5022.

According to the Red Cross, 350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest this year. Cardiac arrest can happen to anyone at any time, and MVFR is helping schools be prepared. In total, seven AED’s will be donated from MVFR to the following schools: Mead High School, Mead Middle School, Erie High School, Erie Middle School, and Niwot High School. These AED’s were donated by Zoll to assist MVFR with their AED’s in Schools program and MVFR also worked with Mead Booster Club to be able to purchase additional AED’s for the Mead schools, bringing the total to 8 new AED’s in the MVFR District. Zoll AED Plus is the only AED with Real CPR Help technology, which provides feedback for both depth and rate of chest compressions during CPR. AED’s have the potential to save someone’s life when they are in cardiac arrest as an AED analyzes heart rhythm and determines if it is necessary to administer an electrical shock to the individual. This electrical shock helps the heart to re-establish an effective rhythm. For every minute without defibrillation, the chance of survival is reduced by 10%. MVFR Foundation is accepting donations to be able to provide these in the elementary schools within the District and to provide traveling AED’s in each high school for sporting events. Donations can be sent to the following: MVFR Foundation, 9119 E. County Line Rd., Longmont, CO 80501. For more information please email info@mvfpd.org or call us at 303772-0710. Carbon Valley Chamber 12th Annual Golf Tournament Success

On Friday, August 16, 2013, the Carbon Valley Chamber celebrated its 12th Annual Golf Tournament. More than 20 benefactor sponsors, 2 supporting sponsors, 5 in-kind donors and 144 golfers supported the event to make this the most successful tournament for the Carbon Valley Chamber to date! More than 25 additional chamber members attended the dinner, raffle and awards ceremony after the tournament, enjoying steak catered by Pete’s Place, peach cobbler supplied by Pepper Jacks Grille and ice cream donated by Daylight Donuts. Complimentary lunch was served to golfers by Chick-fil-A Larkridge. Business industries participating in the event, all active in the Carbon Valley area, included manufacturing, oil and gas and support operations, banking, construction, medical, engineering firms, mining and gravel, retail, insurance, services and goods, car dealerships, and our local town governments- Dacono, Frederick and Firestone. The goal of the annual chamber golf tournament is to not only raise much needed funds for chamber operations, but to provide a time and place conducive for businesses and individuals in our area to mingle, network and have some fun. This event gives businesses a chance to represent themselves to our community, show their support and gain valuable face-time with others. The annual golf tournament reflects our mission well of CONNECTING PEOPLE, DEVELOPING RELATIONSHIPS, AND MIDNING BUSINESS IN DACONO, FIRESTONE, FREDERICK AND THE I-25 CORRIDOR. THANK YOU TO ALL OF OUR GENEROUS SUPPORTORS AND PARTICIPANTS! We hope to see you next year at the event. Please contact the chamber office, 303-833-5933, to find out how you or your business can be involved in 2014. Rachel Flutcher, Executive Director, Carbon Valley Chamber of Commerce

Job hunting is one of the most time consuming and stressful events you can go through. Our very first tip for you is don’t do it alone. Develop a support system of family and friends that keep their eyes open for possibilities, proof application materials, and pump you up for interviews. Also, job hunting is a skill that takes time to develop, so tap into any local experts. There are two places that you can find free help with your job search process. Employment Services of Weld County has a workforce center in Fort Lupton staffed with friendly and knowledgeable faces. They provide resume review services, job search workshops, and 1-on-1 assistance. In addition to a full range of job search services, they can help you develop much needed computer skills and test for the CareerReady Certification to include with your applications. State programs may also provide free career training in certain fields for qualified job seekers. For help a little closer to home, visit Carbon Valley Regional Library in Firestone. Every Tuesday between 1:00-2:30pm, volunteers and staff offer 1-on-1 assistance. We can help with any stage of the job hunt from developing a resume to practicing for the interview. For more information about Job Zone, local job events, and a compilation of helpful job hunt resources, visit http:// highplains.libguides.com/jobs. ~ The Job Zone Team, Carbon Valley Regional Library

THIRST ACRONYM (Trust Him In Relief of Suicidal Thoughts)

September 8th -13th is National Suicide Prevention week. At THIRST Living Water this time provides the opportunity for us to talk to people openly about suicide, helping to reduce the stigma which surrounds it. Our Prayer at THIRST Living Waters is that you find the answers and comfort you need. There are many learning resources to help you and many people nationwide who are committed to empowering you right now. Reach out for help, you are NOT ALONE. THIRSTlivingwaters. com has a 24/7 365 days a year live chat room to speak to you in your hour of need. On their resource center page you will find additional phone numbers, websites and help on what to look for. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help.

Remember to Trust Him in Relief of Suicidal Thoughts. Here are some signs to look for and questions to ask. Know What to Look For • Serious depression • Change in appetite or weight • Change in sleeping habits • Loss of interest in favorite activities • Increasingly isolated • Fatigue & decreased energy • Feelings of worthlessness or guilt • Saying they want to die • Difficulty concentrating & making decisions • Giving away prized possessions • Preoccupation with death and dying • Sudden drop in school or work performance • Sudden feeling of peace after being suicidal • Know What to Say ASK • Express your concern and ask if they are thinking about suicide. • Don’t give up if they’re reluctant to talk, let them know you are there to listen. • Ask how long they felt this way. • Ask if they thought how they would do it.

LISTEN • Don’t act shocked or try to change the subject. • Encourage them to tell you how they feel. • Hear them out, don’t jump to conclusions or make judgments. • Try to understand how they feel without offering simple solutions. RESPOND • Be direct, open and honest. • Let them know you care and that they are not alone. • Help them to understand that suicidal feelings pass and depression can be treated. • Don’t try to handle a suicidal crisis alone, get professional help. • Act now, tomorrow may be too late. By Rick Marschall Special to ASSIST News Service SWARTZ CREEK, MI (ANS) -- It is a familiar scene this time of year. Children go off to school, some walking up the steps of the yellow school bus, some into the front doors of the school where you drop them off, some into the car, off to college. Familiar scenes; also familiar feelings, at least for parents. Separation anxiety, of sorts. Landmarks. Turning points. All very emotional. For me, as a father, these scenes were especially emotional, because my children appeared to seldom notice anything special at all about them. Tra la la, they couldn't wait to board the buses or run for the schoolyard. The most sentiment ever displayed was my son Ted's annoyance at my insistence to photograph him on the porch, each first day of school year after year (because, um, I KNEW that some day he would cherish the memories) (that day might yet arrive). It all threatened to get really slobbery when they went off to college. At those points I was ready to grab each of my three kids around their ankles, unwilling to let them go. They reflected no such emotion. I have chalked this all up, by the way, to their active sense of curiosity and adventure, nothing to do with me being the Weirdest Dad On the Street, proven by such episodes. OK, I exaggerate a little (I tend to exaggerate at least a million times a day). But we need to remember -- whic h means, when I write it, that I often forget -- that the "saddest" things in life really are sometimes the sweetest. When we sign up to be parents, part of the contract is to let go some day. Actually day by day. It is not a mixed blessing, even if we get, in the immortal words of Maynard G. Krebs, misty in those moments. In a recent essay I quoted Theodore Roosevelt, when he said that both life and death are parts of the same Great Adventure. Likewise, no less, are dirty diapers, silly tantrums, going off to school, asking for help with homework, the first date, the second broken heart, going off to college or the military, and watching them get married. "Time and Chance happeneth to all," we are reminded -- and we do need reminders -- in Ecclesiastes. If God sees sparrows falling to the ground, He also sees them when they leave the nest... and fly. If Mama Sparrow is not sad about that (which is my guess), neither should we regard our tears as anything but droplets of joy. Our first born, Heather, I assumed to be exception al from her first breath, so when she was three months old or so, I festooned the house with large signs labeling everything, just to help her to read a day or two sooner than otherwise. My son Ted entered a more sensible world. Our youngest, Emily, we knew would be our last child. My subliminal response to this, I now realize, was to keep her a baby forever, to preserve her like amber in childhood (hers, not mine). I tried to hide from her the knowledge of things like bicycles and solid food. I kid again, a little, but rearing children, after all, is more about your values at the time than their "molded" personalities afterward. It is unavoidable, and not to be regretted but rather celebrated. Savor it all, parents, even the separation of day care, summer camp, or college in some state you cannot locate on a map. Part of God's sweet plan of life is that when you have children, and nurture them, and train them, and endure (and share) all the dramas of childhood, the hours drag by slowly.

Whatever the need, we’d like to help you.

... but when the kids have left home, for whatever of myriad reasons, the years then go by quickly. Remember that, while you still have the gift of remembering. One of Emily's friends is Amy Duke Sanchez, whom we would not know except for having "let go" of Emily when she left for a faraway college right about this time of year. Recently AmyDuke forwarded to me a very wise saying - "Don't ask God for anything until you've thanked Him for everything." That is not merely a template for constructing your prayers. It is a reminder to stop and think about the implications of "everything." We know that all things can work for good, and we need to see that our momentary regrets, especially in this, the Season of Empty Nests, can really be puzzle-pieces in God's eternal and joyful plan.
