WORLD RELIGIONS NCR 9643
WORLD RELIGIONS: THE HISTORICAL MUHAMMAD Few people probably would have predicted in his youth that a 6th century orphan on the Arabian Peninsula would grow up to found the second largest religion in the world. This course tells the remarkable story of Muhammad, the founder of Islam. Based on the latest academic research, we will try to uncover the historical Muhammad from behind the many legends that arose afterward and come away with a new appreciation for a man who more than 1.5 billion people believe is the last of God’s messengers.

WINE AND RELIGION “Sometimes the love of wine is not just a hobby, or even a passion, but is a religion!” Cal Poly religious studies professor and avid wine student Stephen Lloyd-Moffett argues in a forthcoming book that wine can indeed fulfill a spiritual dimension in our lives if we become attuned to its deepest potential. In this lecture and workshop, he will share his insights into the soul of wine and then lead some wine-tasting activities that aim to cultivate a deeper spiritual relationship to the fruit of the vine. Based on his popular class The Religion of Wine, this course promises to be fun, thought-provoking and instructional. Who knows, you might just have a wine epiphany!

WRITING NCR 9693
WRITE YOUR WAY AROUND THE WORLD We dream of sipping cappuccinos in Florence while writing. The reality: blow-drying your hand-washed underwear in a Zimbabwe hotel so you can pack and hit the road. Freelancing from abroad may not be glamorous, but it is an adventure. In this workshop, Katya Cengel, Cal Poly and UC Berkeley journalism instructor, will teach students how to pitch an article to an editor, query an agent about a book, negotiate a contract with a publisher, and more. Having traveled the world writing, Cengel not only has excellent insights into the realities of making a living as a writer, but also knows from experience that the adventure is worth it.

CYBERSECURITY STRATEGIES FOR DECISION-MAKERS With the explosion of cybersecurity threats, business leaders need to be able to address these threats with affordable, practical solutions. Nearly 50 million records of Californians have been breached during the past four years, according to the Attorney General in the 2016 California Data Breach Report. Most of the exploited vulnerabilities that enabled these breaches were compromised more than a year after the solution to patch the vulnerability was publicly available. Through a combination of lecture and hands-on exercises, this class aims to instruct students in: CYBERSECURITY BASICS
Learn cybersecurity fundamentals, including vocabulary, common threats and mitigation approaches. THE EVOLVING THREAT
Understand the range of cybersecurity threats, both current and emerging. CYBERSECURITY BEST PRACTICES
Observe how the best organizations deal with the evolving threat. THE RIGHT TOOLS AND TACTICS
Use hands-on exercises to choose the right tools and actions that can help shield your organization from malicious content, based on your budget. It’s no longer a question of if, but when your organization will experience a cyberattack. Please join Cal Poly and the California Cybersecurity Training Complex for this very important training course for executives, technologists, administrators, managers, and decision-makers. This course will be taught by cybersecurity professionals, Cal Poly faculty and industry experts.

CODING FOR KIDS Coding drives innovation, creativity and confidence in kids. It is a key skill that gives students exposure to problem-solving and logic needed across such learning disciplines as math, reading and science. The earlier that children are exposed to fundamental topics like sequencing, loops and conditionals, the more deeply they will absorb these crucial concepts.
Coding for Kids is a full day of coding for students in grades four through eight. Student coders will be in a college computer lab under the direction of a skilled computer science master. Each student will have his or her own station to learn new skills and develop individualized projects at their own pace.
