OPEN UNIVERSITY A maximum of 36 units of undergraduate academic credit may be earned through Open University.

ABOUT OPEN UNIVERSITY Open University allows non-matriculated individuals to enroll in Cal Poly courses, giving community members access to the resources of the university. A matriculated student is a student who has, through normal procedures, been admitted formally at a California State University campus (e.g., Cal Poly) to pursue an authorized degree, credential or certificate for academic credit. After normal registration concludes, remaining slots in classes become available.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Dara Rosenwasser is a practicing Central Coast artist with a background in strengthening community through visual storytelling and oral history projects. She earned her MFA in photography from the San Francisco Art Institute and her BFA in photography from Seattle University. She has worked as a professional photographer since 2005 and continues to exhibit her work on a national level.

This is a beginning photography course exploring the basic elements of the medium, from analog through digital image-making. By the end of this five-session class, students will feel comfortable with varying methods of producing photographs using their camera. We will cover the essential components of image-making as it relates to fine art and the photographic medium.

Learn the basics of home brewing through a hands-on approach. Students will brew and bottle their own small-batch beer at SLO Brew, “The Rock” facility. Taught by two industry experts, the first session in November is all about brewing a batch. Then on November 16, students will return to “The Rock” for bottling. Using the Ayurvedic Principles of the Six Tastes, we will learn how spices in a meal effect digestion and flavor. Together we will learn about the palate through the Ayurvedic lens. We will sample each flavor and discuss how too much or too little flavor impacts health and diet in general. We will then eat and drink a simple lunch fit for the fall and speak about how the meal has been adjusted to support the qualities present in these months. The combination of this experience, along with discussion, will illuminate how we can review and change our food choices (from diet and time of day, to spices and food groups) during other months of the year and stages in our lives. The workshop will be hands on.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Sera has been a lifetime student and accomplished teacher of yoga and Ayurveda. Her studies and experiences in the realms of yoga, mantra, and Ayurveda all serve to assist in increasing her depth, sensitivity and simplicity in the ways she lives and practices. Her primary source training has allowed her to be a dynamic teacher and facilitator of the modern age. She is fluent in human physical and psychological mechanics and thus can adjust sequences, lectures and treatment plans rapidly to accommodate to individuals’ present needs. EXTENDED.CALPOLY.EDU

PAINTING

Interested in learning how to paint but don’t know where to start? This class is for you. Each week paint a different small landscape in one of the following media: pastel, oil, acrylic and watercolor. Discover different materials, how to use them, and where to obtain them. General considerations for painting, such as drawing, selecting subject matter, learning basic composition, and mixing colors will be covered in this class as well. Have you ever wanted to be a cartoonist and create your own comic books? Join published cartoonist and teacher Raymond Mullikin for an introduction to the cartooning profession. This class combines visual arts fundamentals with exercises to jump-start your creative process and learn to become a professional cartoonist. Create unique cartoon concept work and discover imagination exercises and straightforward drawing techniques. You will also tackle short story projects to build your comic strip, story and illustration skills. We will also discuss successes and challenges cartoonists/illustrators face when publishing their own creations. You will understand the basic practical aspects needed to become a professional cartoonist/illustrator.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Raymond Mullikin is a cartoonist, animator and credentialed teacher. He has published cartoons in books, magazines, newspapers and e-cards, as well as created his own video games and software. He has created animated film shorts for multiple film festivals in the U.S. and Canada. Raymond has been teaching young students for many years throughout San Luis Obispo County.

Sadhus, Sufis, Monks and Madmen. Religious extremism captures much of the media attention, but this course explores people who take their spirituality to the edge. What inspires men and women to live in caves or remain celibate throughout their lives? What does it mean to find union with God? Where is the line between crazy and holy? These are the questions behind this series. It is dedicated to all those who follow their spiritual passions to wherever they lead. Contemporary California is more open to finding your own spiritual path and exploring religious perspectives than any other place in human history. For spiritual explorers, the religions of the world are source books from which to draw wisdom, meaning, rituals, myths and purpose. This series provides opportunities to examine the world’s religions to understand their unique contributions to our shared human heritage and what they can add to your life today. ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Professor Stephen Lloyd-Moffett is an internationally known religious studies scholar and associate professor of religious studies at Cal Poly. A dynamic, popular community lecturer, he is the recipient the Cal Poly College of Liberal Arts Teaching Award and the President’s Community Service Award. Author of “Beauty for Ashes: The Spiritual Transformation of a Modern Greek Community” and the forthcoming “The Soul of Wine: In Vino Sanctus,” Lloyd-Moffett earned an M.A. in religious studies from UC Santa Barbara, a Master of Theology from St. Vladimir’s Orthodox Theological Seminary, and a doctorate in religious studies from UC Santa Barbara.

ABOUT THE INSTRUCTOR Cindy Neuschwander is the author of 17 published picture books for children. Her work includes the Sir Cumference series, “Amanda Bean’s Amazing Dream,” “Mummy Math,” and “Pastry School in Paris.” Her books have been reviewed by The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, the School Library Journal, and Publisher’s Weekly. Cindy began writing books in 1994.

ROLLING UP YOUR WRITER’S SLEEVES A course in Writing Mechanics For children’s literature

A former teacher, she had used math literature in her own elementary school classes and wanted to use more of these books. There were not many available, so she started writing her own. Cindy enrolled in a writing class at a nearby university and learned how to better communicate her ideas. This is how her writing career was born. Now her books are published by Charlesbridge, Henry Holt, and Scholastic.
