Drawing & Painting

COLOR AND TONAL VALUE

NCR 9567

Color and Tonal Value will begin by exploring what tonal value means and how it relates to painting. Through a series of exercises you will learn how to make a tonal pattern for your paintings regardless of the subject matter.

INSTRUCTOR Reichert, Tricia

We will expand our examination into color and how it relates to tonal value. You will learn about choosing color schemes, getting the color right, and in the correct places. We will emphasize the planning stage as this is the key to creating paintings that need very little correcting. Finally, you will be applying color and tonal value skills to create a complete painting. Students should select their own subject matter and choice of water-based media (acrylic, gouache, watercolor or watercolor crayons/pencils).

LOCATION Cal Poly TBA FEE $189 ($169 before 12/8/14) DATE 1/10/15 – 2/14/15 Saturdays 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

CHEESE APPRECIATION

NCR 9628

Learn why some cheeses are soft and creamy, while other cheeses are hard and/or grated. This workshop will introduce you to the science and technology of converting fresh milk into edible cheese. Participants will receive an orientation on the history and manufacture of some of the world’s leading cheeses, and an introduction to some local favorites. A hands-on demonstration will illustrate the basic production process, though the intent of the course is an overall appreciation of cheese making, not a practical step-by-step course on how to make cheese. Challenge your taste buds with acidic, earthy, buttery, nutty, and piquant flavors of different cheeses and learn how they came to have their unique flavors!

INSTRUCTOR Tong, Phillip Jimenez-Flores, Rafael

EXPLORING ORGANICS, COMPOST AND SOILS

NCR 9644

This workshop will explore the evolution of organic agriculture and the meaning of “organically certified” food. The class will take a closer look at the science and role of soils, provide instruction on how to set up a home composting system, and end with a tour of the Cal Poly Compost Unit, the nation’s largest university composting operation. This will be a great opportunity for consumers, foodies and gardeners alike to gain a better appreciation for the growing interest behind organics, compost and their soil foundation. 6 | Winter 2015 Catalog

WORLD RELIGIONS LECTURE SERIES

NCR 9643

Religions are not objects of curiosity to be perused like artifacts in a museum. Rather, they are lived experiences that provide profound meaning for those within them. Our religious traditions have endured for so many years because they have profoundly touched so many lives. Our study together is ultimately about these people – roughly two thirds of the world population whose lives are inextricably tied to their religious traditions and history. This lecture series not only gives you the facts about religions, but also teaches you to appreciate the internal logic behind their world views and engage some of the common myths and misconceptions for each religion.
