Welcome to 2015 and the year’s first issue of Contact We re-launched Contact magazine last year and it has proved to be amazingly successful. We truly believe that it is the island’s leading business magazine. Issued every two months, we saw revenue and content grow throughout the course of last year. Congratulations to the Collaborate team for all its efforts. We start 2015 with our lead feature, being an interview with the principal of the Guernsey College of Further Education, Saboohi Famili who gives insight into her thoughts and ambitions for the college as she seeks to modernise and drive forward further education on the island. We at Chamber are very pleased to see Saboohi in her new role. We hope to build a closer working relationship with the college to ensure that the required courses and training are in place to ensure an appropriately skilled workforce for the island’s business community. 2014 seemed to be the year when the States brought its small, but incremental tax ideas into the headlines. These are presumably designed to cover any on-going budget shortfall. No doubt the ‘Enough is Enough’ protest voice will have made our politicians think carefully about at least some of these, but nevertheless the island cannot escape the difficulties that lie ahead resulting from our ageing population and changing demographics.

Editor Trish Grover editor@collaboratecommunications.com Advertising sales Julie Todd sales@collaboratecommunications.com Design & production Mojoe joe@mojoecreative.co.uk

During the course of 2015, Chamber will encourage the States to focus on the big issues that we believe are fundamental to resolving our population strategy. This involves, in particular, a resolution to our housing licence difficulties in order to make it easier for people to relocate to the island for work and to provide encouragement and stability for employees to put down roots and immerse themselves into island life. In an age where we need certain specialist skills, we must accept the need to bring in new talent, and to nurture and educate that talent. This will in turn ensure that our working and non-working population remains balanced and we may have a chance of also balancing the budget without the need for long-term deficits. The States also needs to focus and find a solution to the lack of affordable housing on the island. 2014 saw a drop in our population. That must not be allowed to develop into a trend. So action, not talk, is needed. There are positive signs both for the Guernsey and the Channel Island economies. I truly believe that 2015 will be the year when we look forward with positivity and optimism.

right) from the University of Southampton School of Management, one of Europe’s leading management schools, said the course would challenge every student.

Since the GTA University Centre introduced a Masters in Business Administration qualification into its programme the two-year course, run in conjunction with Southampton University, has proved extremely popular from students working across all local business sectors.

‘The MBA course has been very successful and we’ve had more than 60 people graduate from it. Previous cohorts and those currently studying will add enormous value and have an important role to play in ensuring their organisations and the island remains competitive.’

‘It is intense but both the GTA University Centre and the University of Southampton have many years’ experience of supporting students and we want to do what we can to ensure there are no barriers put in place.’

This year, 14 have started the course, which includes young managers from the States of Guernsey who will use year one to gain a Postgraduate Certificate in Business Administration. ‘Undertaking an MBA is a considerable commitment so it’s very encouraging that delegates from both the private and public sector are able to access this world-class programme. Individuals and employers

The course, which aims to give students a grounding in the latest management techniques and thinking, provides an understanding of strategic management and an insight into business issues through individual research and by covering a wide range of modules including effective leadership, contemporary marketing, decision modelling and analysis, corporate finance and operations management.

Professor Meyer said the diversity of the students’ background made the course very interesting to teach. ‘Once again, we have a number from the public sector, the finance industry and from the medical and legal professions, and that diversity is important as it brings a different perspective and insight. That helps challenge all of us on our own ideas and how we think things should work and ensures that we are all constantly learning as we go through the course.’

Cloud services provider Calligo, has been named a winner by Frost & Sullivan in its annual 2014 CIO Impact Awards. Frost & Sullivan, a global research and consultancy organisation with 40 offices around the world and nearly 2,000 staff, recognised 44 companies, including enterprise teams, individuals and technology partners for enabling breakthrough new business models and strategies through the innovative use of transformative technologies.

Calligo recognised for innovation

Calligo’s ‘Project Global Multi-Jurisdiction Cloud’ was evaluated by the panel of industry experts judges that included award-winning chief information officers

‘We are very pleased to have been honoured by Frost & Sullivan with this prestigious award. It’s great to be recognised for what is an ambitious and innovative use of technology, which underpins Calligo’s go to market strategy, and for the recognition of what Calligo has achieved in such a short period of time,’ said Julian Box, CEO and co-founder.

The survey was conducted among financial institutions across seven jurisdictions – including Guernsey and Jersey.

of their results and suggestions as to what they need to do next. The higher the score the more prepared the firm is for FATCA monitoring and reporting.

More than half (52%) of respondents reported that the greatest challenge when preparing for FATCA is actually understanding the requirements, such is the complexity and ambiguity of the regulations.

Across all jurisdictions the largest segments were scored as at two or three on the scale indicating that FATCA preparations had commenced or are in progress. This suggests that most firms have reviewed their processes and registered with the US Internal Revenue Service but have not extended into entity classification and client contact. Of the jurisdictions polled, Switzerland scored highest in terms of overall readiness with Guernsey and Jersey scoring above the average.

As a result, almost a third (30%) of respondents are still unsure as to the specific impact of the new reporting requirements on their respective firms, although most agree that FATCA will negatively impact their relationships with US clients, with many US citizens being rejected by banks and financial institutions which could lead to legal challenges.

Survey suggests not all companies are ready for FATCA Blue Bison Software’s ‘FATCA readiness survey’ indicates some companies are not as prepared for the new regulation set to come into force in 2015 as they should be.

and Frost & Sullivan researchers. Calligo received high marks from the judges for its strategic initiative to build a full set of cloud services across multiple jurisdictions around the world that have been specifically designed to meet the data protection, privacy and residency requirements of offshore jurisdictions.

The survey set out to measure the state of readiness for FATCA within the financial services industry and to identify the point companies have reached within the FATCA adoption process. Questions were directed in 3 key areas, namely, strategy and planning; people, policies and processes; and tools and technology. Based upon their answers, respondents were provided with an aggregate score as to where they are on a scale of one to five with an interpretation

Commenting on the research, Richard Parker of Blue Bison said: ‘Financial institutions are getting to grips with FATCA ahead of withholding and reporting coming into effect from January 2015. However, it is evident that many firms underestimate the volume of work involved and intend to use manual processes and forms for individual and entity classification. As FATCA is likely to be just the start of further inter-jurisdictional tax regulation, such as the OECD Common Reporting Standard there is a risk that some firms will be overwhelmed with client monitoring and reporting requirements’.

Shortlist includes a diverse spread of local business sector The shortlist for the Guernsey Awards for Achievement has been announced. 12 local businesses are in the running to win one of the coveted trophies. Six business awards will be presented at the annual gala evening to be held at Beau Sejour on Thursday 5 February. Two very different businesses are competing for the NatWest Best New Business Award: the multidisciplinary practice of therapists Avenue Clinic and newcomer local jewellery designer Becky Rowe Jewellery. The judges were impressed how Avenue Clinic’s innovative business model has enabled it to become a sustainable business model and how Becky Rowe Jewellery has positioned itself as a high quality operation with a brand and retail space that matches the quality of their products.

and local public relations and how Apéritif implemented a very focused and effective marketing strategy on a limited budget. The newest award, the Investec Sustainability In Action Award will see Sarnia Hotels go head-to-head with Health Information Guernsey both of whom are appearing for the first time as short-listed companies at the event. Sarnia Hotels’ clear thinking as to how sustainability can help to drive profitability was highlighted by the judges who were also impressed how the group was the first local hotel chain to recognise that there was a market for ‘green tourism’ and which is the only local company to attain a national acclaimed silver Green Tourism Award. The judges commented that whilst Health Information Guernsey may be a not-for-profit organisation, it has developed to reflect changing circumstances and respond to on-going reviews.

The world of nightclubs, running for charity and the art of cocktail making have been shortlisted for the Healthspan Excellence in Marketing Award: IBZ.TV, 7in7 and Apéritif.

The interest from local companies entering more than one award category remains high with Avenue Clinic and IBZ.TV being shortlisted for the BWCI Innovation Award along with technology consultancy C5 Alliance Group. All three companies impressed the judges with their innovative use of technology to enhance the customer product and experience whilst delivering a superior level of customer service.

The judges highlighted how IBZ.TV’s service had successfully achieved credible levels of brand equity in the Ibiza clubbing market; how in a very short time the 7in7 brand has gained island wide recognition and admiration through the clever use of Twitter

merchant, the NP Group. Excellent staff retention, strong training and career development paths and recognition of high achievers were just some of the comments from the judges regarding these three contenders. The NP Group and BWCI will face each other again in the final award of the gala evening as they have both received a second shortlist for the Commerce & Employment Guernsey Business of the Year Award. Joining them in the contest will be fund administrators, the International Administration Group (Guernsey) Ltd. The judges were impressed with all three companies who demonstrated several key attributes of a successful business such as a growth through diversity, clear investment in internal and external CSR and effective management.

‘Networking is critical for entrepreneurs and startups and it’s important not to undervalue the importance of face-to-face meetings. The speed-networking events are an efficient, fun format to meet new contacts and develop new business leads!’

Full speed ahead for networking partnership Joint organisers of the successful speed networking events – Start Up Guernsey and Rise and Shine Breakfast Club – have launched a further series of events for 2015. The inaugural networking event, which was held during Global Entrepreneurship Week late last year, was a great success and

attracted nearly 50 business professionals from a range of sectors and from companies of all sizes. The concept of speed networking gives a slightly more structured approach than some other alternative business development events. Attendees spend two minutes with a new contact. They exchange information about themselves, their business, find out if there are any potential business development opportunities and then they are moved on to the next person. Carl Symes, chairman of Start Up Guernsey, said:

Anne Richardson, joint founder of the Rise and Shine Breakfast Club, emphasised the benefits of the new partnership. ‘Start Up Guernsey really raised the bar during Global Entrepreneurship Week and we thoroughly enjoyed working with them. Everyone agreed that it is important to continue. So we have planned a schedule of speed networking events for 2015 to suit businesses of all sizes and sectors.’ The first Speed Networking event of 2015 will cost just £12, and takes place on Thursday 29 January. Full details can be found at www.startup.gg and www. riseandshineci.com. Details of the regular monthly Rise and Shine events, held at Muse Café, can also be found on the Rise and Shine website.

even ask your staff to dress in 1940s wartime clothing in the week leading up to liberation!

VisitGuernsey is asking island retailers to step back in time and celebrate the island’s priceless freedom.

Islanders and visitors will be able to vote for their favourite, by post or online, with prizes for both the winning shop/office window and one lucky voter. Guernsey jeweller Becky Rowe will be handcrafting a very special bespoke vintage themed trophy, which will be awarded to the business that scoops the top vote. VisitGuernsey will be supplying all participating retailers with posters to promote the competition and encourage people to vote, along with voting postcards and window stickers.

This year we celebrate the 70th anniversary of the freedom of the Channel Islands from German occupation and VisitGuernsey is encouraging all islanders and visitors to get caught up in liberation fever and needs your help. VisitGuernsey is working in partnership with Jersey Tourism to stage the Channel Islands Heritage Festival from Friday 3 April to Monday 11 May. The festival will showcase the very best of Guernsey’s unique and amazing history with hundreds of events taking place across all the islands during the five-week event. The hope is that all island retailers will get involved. In conjunction with Collaborate Communications, VisitGuernsey is staging a Heritage Festival themed window display competition. We want shop owners and local businesses to capture the spirit of the island’s history in imaginative and fun, colourful and thought-provoking displays that will transform both St Peter Port and out of town shopping areas. Put the flags out or use red, white and blue stock for your display, borrow props with a wartime theme to take your windows back in time or use imagery to evoke memories of the Occupation and liberation. Banners and flags will hang from each of the lamp posts along St Peter Port’s seafront and Guernsey flag bunting will be hung between them, creating a real festival atmosphere in the capital. Visitors at both the airport and harbour will be greeted with information about the Heritage Festival and there will be fun, interactive competitions run throughout the five weeks. The Heritage Festival is a real celebration of a group of small islands with a big history and includes all the Channel Islands with Alderney, Sark and Herm getting involved too with events devised specifically for the festival. Each has its own unique story to tell. Festival events include access to the, never been seen before, secret tunnels under

Castle Cornet. The St Peter Port landmark will also play host to HistoryFest: Travels in Time, over Easter weekend, and Hafenschloss offering a taste of wartime island life, as well as a unique mountain biking race which will see participants cycle down the granite steps and cobbled slopes of this famous fortification. For a more unusual perspective on our past, take a kayak tour that explores the heroics of Guernseyman and member of the Royal Hampshire Regiment, Hubert Nicolle, sent back to Guernsey under the cover of darkness at the outbreak of the Occupation to gather vital information. Explore our wartime defences, take a guided coach, cycling, boat and walking tours, learn more about the history of local cider producing and, of course, celebrate Liberation Day. Our past is woven into its present so let’s celebrate what makes our islands so special. Saboohi Famili and her vision for a college with no walls

19

S AB O O HI FA MILI

Saboohi Famili is the recently appointed principal and chief executive officer of the Guernsey College of Further Education (GCFE). She took up the post in June 2014, moving to Guernsey from the UK where she had spent 15 years in the education sector. Already a big fan of the island, Saboohi is thoroughly enjoying living in Guernsey as well as the new role and the challenges that it presents. ‘GCFE is a real success story. It has an incredible 90-year history, having been offering such a diverse range of courses to the island’s population, not only for the 14 to 16 year olds but also to adults through the programme of evening classes available. ‘The apprenticeship programme is a flagship for the college offering many youngsters pathways to employment. I am also extremely lucky to have inherited a great team of staff who share a common goal and who are all totally committed to delivering top quality alternative education to islanders.’ Both stimulated by the challenges ahead as well as a little frustrated by the (lack of ) speed of the public sector decisionmaking process, Saboohi has clear vision and exciting plans for the college’s future and its role within the island’s community.

20

Saboohi’s appointment in itself is indicative of an appetite to change. While she is clearly chomping at the bit to make things happen quickly, she is very aware that she needs to have the buy-in from a number of stakeholder groups. ‘I am very excited about what lies ahead but I realise that I cannot just have a vision and run with it alone; I need to enable others to see and understand the vision and bring them with me in the change process. ‘It has been a little difficult understanding how things get done here, particularly when I have been used to roles where I could take an evidence-based proposal to a board for an immediate decision. Having to wait three months or more for things to be considered by a number of committees and sometimes the States can be frustrating. Having said that I love the island and all that its lifestyle offers and I am confident about the potential that the college can achieve in the future and very excited about the projects that are already underway.

‘We are also in a transitional phase in terms of our relationship with the Education Department. The department is gradually devolving responsibility for the management of its educational institutions to the institutions themselves and GCFE is the first – so we are, to some extent, paving the way.’ The new operational platform is not fully in place yet but changes are already being made as Saboohi explained: ‘Our board of governors was appointed last January. The plan is that it will establish an operational framework with the Education Department as well as an ‘outcome agreement’ so that it is clear to all parties what it is expected to achieve. The third element of the new operational platform will be an agreed funding methodology. At the moment there is no ‘bottom-up’ budgeting process. Instead the Education Department allocates funds – a system that is not ideal and therefore needs to be reviewed. ‘Some of these changes will need States’ approval and therefore, being realistic, I

S AB OOH I FAM ILI

would say that it will be another 12 months before the new system is fully operational.’

Unsurprisingly, technology is a key component in Saboohi’s plans.

That doesn’t mean to say that the governors aren’t already making valuable contributions to the college.

‘My vision is ‘a college without walls’. Students should be able to access learning aids, tuition and other educational tools anytime, in any place and at any pace. Adopting progressive technologies should give them access to world-class teaching through Skype, Google and many other channels now available at surprisingly low cost.

‘We are extremely lucky to have an incredibly diverse range of individuals on the board,’ said Saboohi. ‘Educationalists, business professionals, politicians and the legal sector are all represented bringing different skills-sets to the party. We are also in the process of carrying out a skills analysis of the board to identify any gaps that might exist so that they can be filled by new candidates if required.’ Saboohi aims to bring the GCFE up to a level of being a world-class provider of education and is confident that this is a wholly realistic goal. ‘There is clearly a lot of work to be done but the college is educating students who will be tomorrow’s workforce. It is essential that we provide them with the skills they need in order to face the challenges of a changing employment market. People no longer stay in the same job for decades but will have a number of roles over their career. Our students need to ‘learn how to learn’ as well as developing specialist subject knowledge. Their ability to learn quickly and adapt to new and changing situations will be the key to their success. Any educational institution should have ‘employability’ at the heart of its teaching strategy.’ One of the first major projects Saboohi is undertaking is a complete review of the curriculum. Holding an event entitled ‘Today Tomorrow Together’ was the first step towards developing a collaborative approach to the review of the college’s future role and educational offering. Following this event, business leaders and industry representatives have been invited to give feedback, on what their respective sectors need in terms of skills and knowledge. ‘We have had some excellent feedback which is absolutely essential to ensure that the college delivers what the island’s economy needs,’ said Saboohi.

My vision is ‘a college without walls’. Students should be able to access learning aids, tuition and other educational tools anytime, in any place and at any pace. ‘Our infrastructure needs substantial investment. I don’t necessarily mean ‘end user kit’ but the functionality of what we can deliver. We live on an island where local businesses are operating in a global market place and dealing with a plethora of time zones on a daily basis and they do so with relative ease. With similar functionality we can really push the boundaries in terms of what we can achieve. Even simple things like a review of our firewall policies will help enormously. As a government department we have extensive online security, which is probably totally appropriate for Policy and Resources or the Income Tax Departments. But a college has quite different needs.’ Saboohi has already started the process. ‘We have invested in some online resources that are currently being piloted by colleagues both inside and outside the classroom. The aim is that once the curriculum review is complete, a number of these will have been fully trialled and we

will already be in a position to identify those that we feel can deliver tangible benefits within a Guernsey context. ‘The college’s increased use of technology will be based on a three-pronged approach. First ensuring that people (i.e. the users) have the knowledge to deploy any resource fully and with the confidence in their own ability; secondly making sure that our hardware is ‘fit for purpose’ – not necessarily the latest or fastest equipment but equipment that is appropriate to fulfil our needs; thirdly reviewing our own management systems. By this I mean that we must be in a position to be able to measure how affective any new technology is. The metrics must be in place to identify the return on any investment made. What has the impact been on learning? What effect has technology had on the quality of teaching? What changes has technology made on the management and leadership of the organisation?’ One challenge for Saboohi, in terms of measuring improvements she aims to make, is establishing the position of the college today particularly in relation to other organisations. ‘We can’t claim to be ‘world-class’ without benchmarking ourselves against other colleges. But this in itself is not straightforward. We cannot compare ourselves with UK colleges since they are all in highly competitive environments whereas we are the sole provider locally of many of the educational programmes we offer.’ Unsurprisingly from someone with the drive and ‘can do’ attitude that Saboohi exudes, she has found a potential solution. ‘I contacted the principals of both Highland College in Jersey and the Isle of Man College of Further Education. Coincidentally they are both also new to their posts and to their respective island so are facing similar challenges. We have agreed that a collaborative approach will benefit all of us and so have identified four areas where we will benefit from working closely. ‘Continued professional development (CPD) and peer review – we will identify joint CPD opportunities where we can perhaps bring someone into one island and share the expense and the benefits;

21

S AB O O HI FA MILI

equally our respective teaching staff will be offered the opportunities to observe each other and offer constructive feedback. ‘Data sharing – we will compare student and college performance in areas such as student retention, results, and engagement levels. This will help us measure improvements in the future. It will also mean that future decisions and planning will be based on robust data rather than anecdotal evidence. ‘Student exchange programmes – these will be incredibly valuable. Travelling away from the island alone for the first time can be quite daunting but it offers fantastic life skill opportunities and new perspectives. It will also offer the opportunity for students to have work placements with different employers. ‘Leadership exchange – being at the top of any organisation can be lonely place. So having a forum enabling the three of us to have open frank discussion, exchange ideas, compare problems and issues will be of great benefit. We have all joined in an environment of austerity having to do more for less and do it better. Equally we are all new to island life and the pros and cons this presents. Working together can only help us all.’ Faced with some significant challenges in the new role, Saboohi sees collaboration and a cohesive approach to be essential if she is to succeed in delivering what she has been asked. This goes beyond working with the other islands but starts a lot closer to home. She explained how local tertiary education is funded by five different States departments. Education funds GCFE;

22

‘I am very excited about what lies ahead but I realise that I cannot just have a vision and run with it alone; I need to enable others to see and understand the vision and bring them with me in the change process.’ HSSD funds the Institute of Health; Home Department supports prison education; SSD funds unemployed education and Commerce & Employment funds the Guernsey University Centre. ‘This is so fragmented,’ said Saboohi, ‘and potentially very confusing for the students, for businesses, for employers and the public. There must be efficiencies to be made from streamlining the budgeting and financial management processes. We must be able to deliver a more streamlined service by taking a more ‘joined up’ approach and creating a proper combined strategy. Our aim should be to ensure that public funding is used to its full potential.’ Saboohi isn’t waiting for local political structures to change. Instead she has approached all of the various stakeholders and opened discussion on how best they might work together.

succeed. A cursory glance at her cv is enough proof in itself. Born and educated in Iran, she trained as an electrical engineer and doggedly pursued a career there until she had to acknowledge the restrictions she was facing inherent to an Islamic state required her to take a different route. ‘I was a non-conformist and stubborn. Even when the rest of my family left the country, I stayed, believing that if everyone left Iran, the country and its attitudes would never change. But eventually I followed the rest of my family and moved to London in 1999.’ In the UK Saboohi followed a career in the education arena – first teaching engineering and then moving into education management. She was often called upon by government to give her views on educational policy changes and was involved with a US funded project to deliver educational tools to combat zones during recent conflicts.

‘It’s a question of capability, capacity and flexibility. For example I have resources at the college – 200 staff, classrooms and a catering school. The GTA has specialist expertise in certain areas. A cohesive shared approach to tertiary education delivery has to be the way forward to ensure that the island has a future workforce appropriate to what our economy needs. It’s very easy to be introspective and protective of our own space and areas of activity but this is not the way ahead.’

And as if work challenges weren’t enough, Saboohi’s choice of sport is high altitude climbing. Hitting 40 a few years back she determined to complete the seven summits before reaching 50. Four have already been conquered - Kilimanjaro, Aconcagua, Elbrus, Mont Blanc – and only a knee injury has slowed her progress down. Her next climb is a 8,000m ascent of Cho Oyu on the Tibet-Nepal border in preparation for Everest.

That Saboohi is an achiever is beyond doubt and while significant organisational change is never easy to deliver, given our innate human resistance to it, she certainly has the expertise, drive and life experiences to

Her goals for GCFE and the island’s tertiary education offering are ambitious to say the least. On meeting her you are left with the impression that this is one mountain she will successfully climb.

The big picture Earnings and valuation in 2015

Kevin Gardiner, Rothschild Wealth Management, explains how the many possible outcomes for 2015 boil down to four permutations of earnings and valuations. With so many different scenarios being tipped for 2015, it is easy to lose focus. Bringing things back to basics can help organise our thoughts, and that is what the graphic shown right is designed to do. The returns on most balanced portfolios are largely driven by growth-related return assets. These are typically the largest and most volatile holdings. Their performance will, in turn, be driven ultimately by just two things: the level of income they generate and the valuation put on that income by the market. Income – typically, in the form of earnings or dividends – is linked to the macro outlook: if economies get bigger, corporate profits can share in that growth. Valuations can be related to interest rates – higher rates can drive earnings and dividend yields up, and valuations down – but also to general investor confidence and risk appetite. All of the many and varied outcomes under

24

discussion for 2015 can be broken down into what they might mean for these two key variables: will income and/or valuations rise or fall? The uncertain future thus boils down into four basic permutations only, shown in the graphic.

warily, and valuations fall.

In the two mixed outcomes, income and valuations move in opposite directions. In one, a fall in earnings is seen as temporary, and gets the benefit of the doubt as relaxed investors accept the higher valuations it brings.

In the outcomes in which income and valuations move in the same direction, the portfolio implications are clear: higher income and valuations together push returns up, and lower income and valuations pull them down. In the mixed outcomes, returns depend on whether income falls by more than valuations rise, and vice versa. The dotted line illustrates combinations in which the two changes exactly cancel each other: the area to the right of it is one in which returns are positive, and the area to the left is one in which they are negative. This approach is complete – the four outcomes exhaust the possibilities on offer (though see the inset box) – and it side-steps the need to spell out in more detail the many different macro combinations and permutations underpinning more conventional scenario analyses.

In the other, a climate perhaps of nervous reflation, higher earnings are treated

For example, rising interest rates can coexist with both lower and higher

We might describe the outcome in which economies grow and optimism breaks out as the best of both worlds: income and valuations would both be higher. At the other extreme, a recessionary 2008-type episode, in which scared investors are less willing to hold return assets at any given level of corporate profits, would see both income and valuations fall.

valuations on risk assets, depending on the context. If strong economic growth is responsible for driving rates up, investors may decide to value stocks more cheaply (as in the ‘nervous reflation’ outcome), or choose instead to value stocks more highly (as in the ‘best of both worlds’); conversely, falling interest rates are no guarantee of higher valuations in a d.com 2008-type context, but could be in the , St Julian’s Avenue ‘benefit of the doubt’ outcome. GY1 3BP, Channel Islands Similarly, there is no rigid link between (say) interest rates and valuations on the one hand and income on the other. In a

low-inflation world, we can imagine arriving in the top-right quadrant because monetary conditions stay loose, favouring higher valuations, even as economies grow. In a high-inflation world (remember that?), we can imagine monetary conditions having to stay tight even in a recession, which would depress valuations.

prognosis is consistent with any number of permutations of these and other variables, but its key components are a belief that profits will continue to rise – likely led by the US – and that valuations are not particularly high and don’t need to fall, even as US and UK interest rates are seemingly poised to rise.

We do not make precise predictions for growth, interest rates or market levels because we know just how fallible – and misleading – such forecasts can be.

This would place us somewhere on the border of the ‘best of both worlds’ and ‘nervous reflation’ quadrants in the graphic – firmly to the right of the gain line, though we think of this as a reasonable expectation, not a forecast.

Our ‘muddle through’ or ‘glass-half-full’

A fifth dimension? Technically, both investment income09/12/2014 and valuation might stay exactly the same in 2015, adding a fifth possible outcome – a point at 12:19 the exact intersection of the quadrants – to the four we identify. Prices would then also be unchanged of course. It would be highly unusual for that to happen (though some of us might welcome a rare pause for breath), but just in case it does we should perhaps think of the graphic not so much in terms of the calendar, but rather in terms of the next significant development in markets that lies ahead, whenever it happens.

Investing is about buying risk for the potential of making returns in the future Everything centres on the quality of risk taken. Mouhammed Choukeir of Kleinwort Benson explains

But what is risk? And how does one take high-quality risk? Risk, in the most typical quantitative sense, is defined as the variance or standard deviation of a portfolio. Yet this somewhat sterile definition does not quite capture what risk is. A quick Google search leads to a more textured definition: risk is the potential of loss resulting from a given action – or even inaction. For investors, this simply translates into the potential to lose money. Ironically, not taking risk at all is the surest way to lose money. This can also be thought of as having no aim other than capital preservation. An investor wishing only to preserve capital can start with £100 and simply do nothing. The notional £100 will be returned at the end of any and every investment horizon, and while capital has indeed been preserved, money, more specifically purchasing power, has been lost due to the compounding and corrosive effects of inflation. And inflation is indeed to be feared. Annual inflation between 1900 and 2013 was 4.1% in the UK. At that rate, in five years, today’s £100 would buy £85 worth of goods and services. It would be worth half as much in as little as 17 years. Disciplined investment process Therefore, a primary investment objective – even for the most conservative saver – should be to preserve purchasing power in the long run. Investors should, at a minimum, aim to ensure that £100 saved today will buy the same basket of goods and services when it is spent in the future. Therefore, in this context, risk taking is necessary to avoid losing money. Attractive risks adequately compensate investors; unattractive risks do not. Herein lies the rub. In order to maximise the chances of taking attractive risks, a disciplined investment approach is

required. At Kleinwort Benson, our investment doctrine is based on the three core tenets of valuation, momentum and sentiment. First, invest in assets when they are cheap and avoid them when they are expensive. More than any other measure, the price paid for an asset is the chief determinant of whether future returns will be good or bad. The price of your risk taking is at its highest – or potential return is at the lowest – when overpaying for an asset. This simple philosophy is true for every asset class across all geographies and time horizons, yet can be (and is) easily forgotten in the heady rush of animal spirits.

Investors should, at a minimum, aim to ensure that £100 saved today will buy the same basket of goods and services when it is spent in the future. Therefore, in this context, risk taking is necessary to avoid losing money. Take equities for instance; when price-tobook ratios are cheap (between 1.1x and 1.5x), investors receive average annual real returns of 22% over the following five years. However, when investors – motivated by animal spirits – are willing to pay 2.3x the book value of equities (or more), average real return is 0%; it can be as bad – as minus 8%

per year. Price-to-book is just one measure of valuation; other valuation measures paint a similar picture. Second, participate in positive trends and avoid negative ones. Investing in asset classes and securities that are in positive trend is an extremely effective way to reduce risk. Compare a buy-and-hold strategy for global equities versus a momentum-based one between 1988 and 2013. The momentum strategy would more than double the return-to-volatility ratio and would also greatly reduce drawdown, peak to trough loss, from 56% to 24%. This is not limited to equities; momentum strategies reduce drawdown and/or volatility for bonds and commodities as well. Third, buy when investors are overly pessimistic and sell when they are overly optimistic. When a majority of investors rush to sell an asset (or asset class), it becomes ‘oversold’. Historical returns for equities, when oversold, rise 10% (on average) over the next 60 days. Moreover, they are positive 92% of the time over the same period. When equities are ‘overbought’, average returns plunge to minus 2.1%. Market sentiment is a key signpost for determining risk stance and asset positioning in all conditions, and particularly when assets are volatile. Where are we now? Over the coming weeks and months, many investors will undoubtedly be poring over economic fundamentals, trying to predict when rates will rise or surmising over the outcome of geopolitical events. This is short-term market noise. We remain focused on implementing our disciplined approach: investing in cheap and positively trending assets, especially when sentiment is overly negative. Those risks pay off in time.

Matchmaking at its best Julian Winser of Cazenove Capital explains the thinking behind the company’s recent merger with Schroders and why the transition and rebrand has been a painless experience

In July 2013 Schroders plc bought 100% ownership of Cazenove Capital Management. Schroders is a FTSE 100 listed company and is somewhere between the 60th and 70th largest publicly owned UK company. What makes it different to most, however, is the fact that it remains 47% owned by the tightly knit Schroder family. Cazenove Capital Management was the small private client and wealth management company that stayed independent after the acquisition of Cazenove plc by JP Morgan back in 2002. Both Schroders private bank, a subsidiary of Schroders plc, and Cazenove Capital Management had been in competition since 2002 and because of their similar corporate approach, ethics and service offering were often short-listed adversaries. The bringing together of Schroders and Cazenove Capital Management certifies the strength and integrity that have underpinned two great family businesses for more than 200 years, creating a leading wealth manager with a unique combination of strengths. In bringing together the two great names we decided to rebrand the wealth management division of Schroders as Cazenove Captial Management to differentiate us from the investment management division of Schroders. This differentiation is important as we remain, on behalf of clients, independent in terms of how we look after their assets. Despite this we benefit significantly from the worldwide expertise in investment that the Schroders group brings us. What has made a huge difference in making this merger so successful is the similarity in culture between the two organisations combined with shared values. These include putting the client first and the delivery of

28

excellence. The now merged business has clear strengths: Stability of ownership The Schroders family retains ownership of 47% of the voting shares in the company, founded in 1804. This gives us the stability to focus on the long-term aspirations of our clients.

The bringing together of Schroders and Cazenove Capital Management certifies the strength and integrity that have underpinned two great family businesses for more than 200 years, creating a leading wealth manager with a unique combination of strengths. Partnership with client Our significantly experienced team allows us the luxury of choosing the right individual for each client and their request whether it be for portfolio management, wealth planning, banking or treasury services.

Global investment and banking expertise We draw on the expertise of 400 investment and banking professionals from 37 offices and 27 countries. The client team has the flexibility to apply this unparalleled global knowledge to our service allowing us individual thinking for each client. Long-term excellent performance We have an on-going proven long-term performance record, while also achieving our clients’ objectives. Our Guernsey team has embraced the rebrand; not only has it been straightforward but also allows greater global experience without disturbing the infrastructure of the company. Supporting this year’s Chamber of Commerce dinner was a great opportunity, not only for us as a company, having the occasion to talk about our rebrand, but also the opportunity to support such a wonderful and humbling charity such as ‘Walking With The Wounded’. Cazenove Capital Management also had the pleasure of spending time with Captain Ibrar Ali, Major Kate Philp and Richard Eyre whilst they were in Guernsey. On the back of the Chamber dinner we invited Richard, Kate and Ibrar to present to the Guernsey team, the evening was a great success and a unique opportunity for our staff to be inspired by such amazing individuals. Looking towards 2015, Cazenove Capital Management will continue to provide a tailored approach through our clientfocused business, high quality advice, first-class administration and reporting. As a company we also endeavour to continue supporting the local Guernsey community, whist continuing to raise our profile in the Channel Islands.

What next for Japan? Justin Oliver, of Canaccord Genuity Wealth Management, takes a look at the Japanese market

It is the time of year when predictions are made; when commentators confidently forecast which assets and markets will perform particularly strongly in the coming months. It is also the time of year when, as a result, the Japanese stock market historically enjoys a surge in popularity. Ignoring the impact of currency movements, Japanese equities have enjoyed a pronounced renaissance. In local currency terms the Nikkei 225 rose 23% in 2012, surged a further 57% in 2013 and to 30 November 2014 gained an additional 7%. Since 2011, the Nikkei 225 has actually outpaced the US S&P 500. However, unless foreign investors had taken the decision to negate currency movements, they have not fared anywhere near as well because the Japanese yen has been in free fall. At the end of November 2011 US$1 bought ¥77.62. Three years later US$1 bought ¥118.63; a depreciation of 52.8%. It is this depreciation that has helped boost the price of Japanese assets and was one of the intended consequences of Prime Minister Shinzo Abe’s so called ‘Abenomics’. In another attempt to restore growth to a structurally crippled economy, Abenomics consists of three ‘arrows’ namely: monetary reflation (pumping vast quantities of yen into the economy); fiscal stimulus/consolidation (broadening the tax base and ensuring government policies support growth); together with the suitably vague structural reform. This last arrow is a catch all for anything which might be presented as aiding the long-term structural growth of the economy. Only two things were required of these policies – that economic growth was boosted and that it put an end to the

30

persistent deflation which has ravaged the economy. Given it is approximately two years since Abenomics was unleashed, has it been a success? Sadly, the only unqualified success has been the boost provided to asset prices. Elsewhere, the results are far from conclusive and we judge that Japan remains at a distinct crossroads.

A VAT hike in April had severe repercussions for the economy. By the end of September Japan was reported to have slumped back into recession. A VAT hike in April had severe repercussions for the economy. By the end of September Japan was reported to have slumped back into recession. Meanwhile, stripping out the effect of the consumption tax hike, consumer price inflation is barely in positive territory and even this appears wholly attributable to the fall in the value of the yen. Any prolonged stabilisation in the currency could quickly erode even this meagre reading. Inflation does not yet appear ‘entrenched’ in the mind-set of either businesses or the populace. In fact, with nominal wage growth continuing to lag price rises, Japanese consumers are in a worse position than they were two years ago. As far as economic restructuring is concerned, little of note has been achieved.

There are certain things which even well planned and nimbly executed fundamental reforms will not overcome – the horrific demographic profile of the country being chief among them. The Japanese labour force is declining by 1.5% per annum and absent mass immigration, will continue to contract. Even the much-vaunted attempt to increase the female participation ratio may have little effect given that female workers already account for close to 50% of the workforce. Tariffs also remain higher than the EU and US, corporate restructuring has been limited and, in many ways, Japan is as closed an economy as it was two years ago. That is not to say there has been no progress. Companies are being overtly encouraged to provide pay rises to workers, productivity growth is on a par with Europe and the Japanese corporate sector has a better debt profile than other regions. So too, at the end of October the Bank of Japan surprised many by escalating its asset purchase programme to ¥80 trillion (US$700 billion) annually. However, even here we can’t help but think that Plan B looks a lot like Plan A - just with a bit more gusto. Despite the limited success of Abenomics, Shinzo Abe’s popularity is such that he called a snap election in November in which he committed to delaying the second planned consumption tax rise scheduled for October 2015. It would be a shock if Abe was not returned to power. But what then? Do the hopes of the economy continue to rest on engineering a further decline in the yen? Will Plan B be followed by Plan C and will either prove more successful than Plan A in introducing true economic progress? We have our doubts on many of these fronts and consequently, despite the New Year tradition of favouring Japanese equities, we will look elsewhere for inspiration just for now.

Keeping business travellers ‘appy Fred Eulenkamp of TravelSolutions takes a look at some of the latest travel technology assisting businesses remain compliant with legislation

In the business world we are always hearing about the tightening of legislation. For most companies the focus of implementing this legislation is on what happens in the workplace with regard to interaction with customers. The impact of legislation on a company’s travel is therefore sometimes not as high up the pecking order as it should be. Events over the last few years have, however, focused the minds of travel professionals on how they can help their customers implement the various duty of care regulations brought in since the events of 9/11, SARS, the Icelandic volcano and concerns with the safety of travel within and over regional ‘hot spots’. To this end, do you know where all your employees are at any given time? Do you know which airlines are currently on the EU banned or ‘watch’ lists? Can you reach your staff quickly and efficiently within seconds and notify them of dangerous situations that may be affecting them, whether that means

all employees worldwide or just one or a few in a particular city or number of cities. If a business does not answer ‘yes’ to the first two questions, and is unable to easily contact its employees, there is a good chance there is a lapse in the duty of care a company has to its employees while they are travelling. By mandating the use of a travel management company, these questions can all be answered with a ‘yes’, and a company is able to demonstrate that it has fulfilled its care obligations and often finds it has saved money in the process – a win-win on all scoreboards. At TravelSolutions we have recently implemented two of the latest traveller tracking systems and are rolling these out to our clients over the next few months. This means travellers’ current and future locations can be seen easily on an interactive map, and those in danger zones can be quickly identified, grouped together, and contacted within seconds.

01481 715145

Bristol | Bromley | Guernsey | Jersey | Oxford

The basic system allows us to send alerts and updates via the traveller’s chosen method and is provided free to all TravelSolutions’ travellers via our itinerary system. A company login is also provided with this, allowing travel bookers and/or HR departments to stay in contact with their travelling staff. The upgraded system allows for automated security and other alerts to be sent, and provides two way instantaneous communication via a smart phone app asking simple questions such as ‘Do you need help?’, with a single ‘yes’ or ‘no’ one-click answer. In addition, as long as it’s ‘enabled’ by the traveller, the smart phone’s location system can be accessed - giving the ability to track someone, which is useful if you have employees travelling to designated ‘hot spots’. We are happy to provide advice on the logistics of implementing either of these systems for businesses – either here in Guernsey, or from our offices in Jersey, Bristol, Bromley and Oxford.

NEW Z E A LA ND

In this series of articles, we take a look at other financial centres, where their focus is, what products and services they are promoting, what they are doing well (or not so well) and if there is anything Guernsey can learn from them. New Zealand is the land of the long white cloud, home to a rugby team that is all but invincible, boasts an ancient Maori nation and, you guessed it, has a legislative and regulatory structure that is being developed with the aim of facilitating greater involvement in the arena of international financial services. Some promotional material already goes as far as to claim New Zealand is the Switzerland of the South Pacific, so it is clearly aiming high. New Zealand is also a very, very long way away from Guernsey - 18,585km to be precise - but not so far away that the two have not touched and influenced each other in the past and may continue to do so in the future. A little dig into the history book reveals that there was a considerable number of Guernsey emigrants to New Zealand in the

34

mid to late 1800s. One who made a particular mark was Emilius Le Roy, a Guernsey sailor who settled in Auckland in the late 1850s, established a successful tent and sail-making business and then sent home to Guernsey to collect his fiancée, Catherine Tabel to join him. For Catherine to have answered that call and made such a trip in those days must have been true love indeed! Of course, the other very successful Guernsey migrant is the Guernsey cow. There is a now thriving New Zealand Guernsey Cattle Breeders Association and our famous local breed plays a vital role in the success of the New Zealand dairy industry. Returning to finance, there are other links between Guernsey and New Zealand. For example the inevitable but necessary tax information exchange agreement; and, historically, several Guernsey fiduciaries

opened offices in New Zealand to take advantage of the New Zealand foreign trust legislation. But what does New Zealand offer and does it pose a threat despite its distance? On the fiduciary side a quick initial look at the jurisdiction’s activity throws up much of the usual promotional positives. New Zealand is not on any blacklists; it is a member nation of the OECD and FATF; there is a substantive legislature based on English law; and, it has a government receptive to ideas and very supportive of the development of an international finance centre of excellence. The added bonus it has – and something that is a recurring theme whenever IFCs are discussed – is a location in the Asia-Pacific region. This makes it ideally suited for clients in China, India and Indonesia. Interestingly, several of the financial websites have translated versions offering the text in Chinese or Russian which does say something about target markets and

possibly (there are no figures available) where they gain much of their business. This by no means diminishes Guernsey’s own success in developing the Chinese market. What New Zealand might offer in terms of geographical proximity, is far outweighed by the well-developed financial industry, innovative products and top quality professional services our island can offer. If an indication is needed as to how closely aligned New Zealand is with China then look no further than the tourist industry. There have been supportive prime ministerial visits to China (John Key); it is estimated that within a few years the number of Chinese tourists to New Zealand will top one million; and it has been reported that Shanghai Pengxin Group, the Chinese privately-owned multinational, is considering establishing a fund to invest US$10 billion in developing New Zealand’s tourism infrastructure. The same company also recently purchased 16 New Zealand dairy farms (assumedly with their share of Guernsey cattle). With this level of Chinese interest in New Zealand there is no doubt that the New Zealand finance sector will benefit hugely from the links to China in the future. Question - is this another way into the

Chinese market for Guernsey – through subsidiaries in New Zealand?

stringent as you would expect for a member of the OECD and FATF.

But as we know well in Guernsey, the key to success and being able to generate on-going success, is the products that are offered. Here, to be honest, New Zealand has the core fiduciary package but is lacking elsewhere. In fact, the sector resembles a Guernsey of 20 years ago.

The fiduciary offerings are fundamental – offshore trusts (yes – they still use that word despite the fact they are not offshore and it is passé); private trust companies; limited liability companies; look through companies; and limited partnerships. There is strong play on asset protection and on the use of the foreign trust legislation. Essentially a trust established in New Zealand that has no New Zealand resident settlors or beneficiaries suffers no tax in New Zealand. There is also a positive move to try and grow the fund industry with clear intentions to become the leading hedge fund hub in the Asia-Pacific region.

As a country and culture there are many similarities to what Guernsey was 30 or 40 years ago or even in the present day This will not be a surprise to anyone who has visited New Zealand, because as a country and culture there are many similarities to what Guernsey was 30 or 40 years ago or even in the present day. This does not apply to the anti-money laundering, legislative and regulatory regimes, which are as

So does Guernsey have anything to fear? Not really. Although New Zealand may have better wine than us, way taller mountains and, let’s face it, the All Blacks (no offence to the Guernsey Rugby Club), it is Guernsey it will be wanting to emulate when it comes to continuing development as a successful international finance centre.

Contact caught up with Tim Guilbert, managing director of one of Chamber’s newest members, Consult & Build to find out about the company and Tim’s plans for the future. Tim’s knowledge and experience with regard to energy efficiency and savings is extensive and his own building projects are testament to his expertise in this area.

Responsible for the new development just off Collings Road – Camelia Drive – Tim has ensured that these houses are built to minimise energy consumption, retain heat and operate at maximum efficiency which, with the escalating cost of fuel will be an attractive proposition to any potential buyer. But the building projects are just one aspect of what the company’s offering. Tim has recently set up a new trading entity, Property Plus through which he will be offering consultancy services drawing on his own knowledge and expertise in the energy field. Initially Property Plus is offering Home Performance Assessments where he and his team will undertake an assessment of a home or office in terms of its energy consumption and efficiency. The goal is to offer clients practical advice and specific recommendations on changes that can be put in place to save energy and therefore money. So confident is Tim in these detailed assessments that he offers a full refund on the cost of one (which isn’t at all cost-prohibitive in the first instance) if a client doesn’t achieve 10% savings on energy bills

after putting the recommendations in place. The assessments cover a range of topics from insulation to lighting from ventilation to boilers. Savings can be made on domestic energy costs, by making some pretty simple changes. For example how many of us leave TVs on standby constantly? Interestingly by making sure electrical devices (TVs, PCs) are not left plugged in or idle, a typical home could save over £100 a year – and Tim even has a simple gadget that will do this automatically for you. Tim himself has a number of qualifications and accreditations in this field some of which he holds exclusively in the Channel Islands. He is a member of the British Institute of Non-destructive Testing which promotes the quality testing disciplines; a member of the British Plumbing Employers’ Council, which develops skills and expertise to meet the highest industry standards; and a member of The Centre of Refurbishment Excellence which supports professionals developing low carbon, resource efficient systems. Tim is also chairman of the Guernsey Chartered Institute of Building.

Technology in 2015 Calligo’s Julian Box looks ahead to 2015 and what’s on the horizon for businesses in the virtual world

What should we expect from technology this year? As 2014 came to a close it was clear that it had been yet another year of massive step changes in several areas, most of which will have a dramatic effect on the technologies that will be impacting us during this year. Taking a quick look back over last year we can see that once again there was a clear focus on data protection and privacy. There were numerous data protection and privacy issues during 2014 not least Microsoft’s on-going court case with the US government around the latter’s demand for data from their Dublin based services. They are currently in contempt of court after losing both the initial hearing and their first appeal. This currently means they can only meet Guernsey Data Protection laws by breaking the law in the US, a pretty unsustainable position but a new appeal is due very shortly and this case has massive ramifications for all US based service providers if they ultimately lose. So what does 2015 have up its sleeves for us all? ‘Bring Your Own Device’ (BOYD) will continue its already rapid growth but it’s the levels of mobile device diversity that will affect organisations the most. The number and types of devices coming into businesses, schools and government departments, or being demanded by organisations’ users, will put enormous pressure on the management of what is an ever-changing landscape of technology and a key battleground for vendors in the coming year.

Another area of focus will be the continuing shift in application development by software developers to ‘platform as a service’ frameworks. These include the rapidly rising use of container-based development using technologies like Docker. Each container has the operating system, backend services like databases as well as web service based delivery mechanisms. The container, along with all the parts needed by the application, can be deployed within seconds removing the need for expensive backend infrastructures like Microsoft SQL, application servers or other large scale technologies which have been, and still are being, promoted as the only option for Guernsey businesses. This new method of both developing and deploying applications is taking the world by storm and it’s already a technology that my company is taking advantage of. ‘Software Defined Everything’ - over the last 10 or so years IT has been continuingly moving away from a purely physical based infrastructure to one of a virtual nature. First, we had server virtualisation, and then desktops, followed by networks and now the datacentre as a whole, which is encapsulated in cloud based services. The term ‘Software Defined Everything’ comes from the push towards businesses and users interfacing with a service that is completely software based. 2015 will see this trend continue at an ever-increasing rate and the term will become commonplace. And my final prediction will be no surprise to readers of my columns or blogs; that of data protection and the growth in the demand for jurisdictional based cloud services centring on data protection, data residency and

privacy, especially services in what I’ve been calling ‘data safe zones’. This area is also one that Guernsey should grab since it’s well positioned to become a leader in this space. I hope that its potential is fully realised by the political leaders as the time to position Guernsey as a leader in this space is now. There are other jurisdictions already looking at this area as a great opportunity for new growth and without prompt action they could beat you to it. I couldn’t finish an article like this without a few words on technology in schools during 2015. It’s an exciting time for schools and students as they look to develop new skills around technology that enables creativity and innovation across all curriculum subjects. I’m genuinely looking forward to seeing and hearing about the projects that have inspired children in the use and application of technology, this really is a great time to be at school. To summarise then, 2015 is set to be a fast moving and exciting year on many technology fronts. Software development is changing massively and Guernsey businesses need to stop and take note, or it’s likely they will be left behind the curve. I believe 2015 will continue to see heightened data residency and privacy concerns and Guernsey needs to keep a close eye on the new EU data protection law that’s likely be enacted by the end of this year. As discussed above, the emergence of ‘data safe zones’ will be a key opportunity for Guernsey but it must align its data protection law with the new EU one if it wants to compete in this space.

Start up companies - utilising outsourcing or incubation service providers Jo Carré of the Active Group takes a look at the pros and cons of appointing an outsourced business service provider Incubation service providers If your company is in its infancy and considering the most cost effective and efficient way in which to establish a physical presence, using an incubation service provider can have considerable benefits to small businesses in the early years. A service provider which provides incubation services can be the perfect bridge to make the big step from idea to execution. Incubation service providers can provide an inexpensive start up environment and a range of tangible administrative, consulting, and networking services. This can often include utilities, office equipment, computer services, conference rooms, receptionist and human resources services. Having this business infrastructure in place allows the start up company to focus its resources on its core business. Business trial and error is something that a start up company has to endure as part of its business life, however an incubation service provider can often provide insightful advice and information on a broad spectrum of business issues to support the start up company in its embryonic years. The start up company also has the ability to tap into the network of business partners, which are associated to the incubation service provider. The further benefits of utilising an incubation service provider is that it can provide an element of legitimacy and credibility, as the start up company will have been subject to the incubation service providers due diligence process. Outsourcing service providers Historically, the most common rationale for outsourcing was one of cost or headcount reduction. However, the drivers can often be more strategic, and focused on performing core value-adding activities in-house - where a company can best utilise its own core competencies.

40

Adopting an outsourcing model can present a variety of benefits to your company, which can include outsourcing to providers that are specialists in a particular field or have technical expertise and the potential to increase the speed and the quality of delivery of outsourced activities beyond your current business capabilities. Outsourcing and incubation risk choose the right provider for you. As with any outsourcing arrangement or incubation service there are inherent risks. It is your businesses reputation, your livelihood and your risk, therefore it is vital that you choose the right service provider to perform the services on your company’s behalf. Perform an assessment of the outsourcing or incubation risk to which your business is, and potentially could be, subject. The assessment methodology has to be measurable and be on-going throughout the life of the outsourcing or incubation relationship. Prior to commencing any outsourcing or incubation service relationship, perform your research and ensure that the service provider has a proven track record in providing the specific services. Take time to compare and contrast the strengths and attributes of the service providers. Are they well established within their given fields? Enquire whether the outsource service provider has the ability and capacity to undertake the provision of the service effectively and to your required standards. Give consideration to the service provider’s technical, financial and resource capacity. Word of mouth regarding the outsource or incubation service provider’s services can add a level of comfort, but must not be the primary reason for appointment and cannot replace your own detailed research and assessment. Ensure that you retain the expertise, skills and knowledge in-house. This is to ensure that you have the relevant

experience, knowledge and practical understanding of the outsourced services to effectively oversee the outsourced function. Legally binding written contract Establish a legally binding signed and dated contract, which includes the details of the required and service levels. A legally binding written contract between the start up company and the service provider is an important management tool. Having in place appropriate contractual provisions can assist in reducing the risks of nonperformance or disagreements regarding the scope, nature and quality of the services that are to be provided. A legal binding written contract should assist in facilitating the monitoring of the outsourced activities and should include as a minimum: • The provisions regarding confidentiality; •

The defined responsibilities of the start up company and the outsource or incubation service provider and subcontractors, if any, and how such responsibilities will be monitored;

• The liability of the outsource or incubation service provider for unsatisfactory performance or other breach of the agreement; • The mechanisms to resolve disputes that might arise under the outsourcing arrangements; • The business continuity / disaster recovery provisions; • Any guarantees and indemnities; • The termination of the contract, transfer of information and exit strategies. There are clearly advantages and disadvantages associated with outsourcing. However, if you are aware of these from the outset, with the right agreement and controls in place, it can see a company flourish from fledgling start up to become a market leader in its sector.

Outsourcing benefits – size doesn’t always matter David Jackson argues the benefits to outsourcing the accounting and financial management functions in business David is a freelance accountant and financial manager providing specialist financial management services to businesses of all sizes.

maintain. Outsourcing can help small firms get access to the same economies of scale, efficiencies and expertise that larger companies enjoy.

Outsourcing, the simple act of transferring a business process or function to an external supplier, has the potential to make an organisation leaner, more adaptive, smarter and more profitable.

Perhaps the greatest merit in outsourcing enables a business to focus on its core activities. To concentrate and spend more time on what it does best. If this results in more innovative products, greater market share and better development, the benefits can be striking quite apart from the potential cost savings.

It’s not just small business owners who experience the frustration of spending more time than they want on non-revenuegenerating activities. Any business, regardless of size, is more efficient when it can focus on its internal resources and core competencies. This is why there’s a growing trend of outsourcing especially when it comes to accounting and financial management (AFM). Effective financial management is an essential part of running any successful business and helping it reach its full potential. Some businesses have a first rate AFM function in-house. However, for a variety of reasons many do not and this is not always related to size. Many firms are finding more efficient, flexible and cost effective solutions are often available to them through outsourcing. Generally speaking, the top reasons for outsourcing any business function include access to specialised skills and knowledge, gaining better quality and more flexible support than the business is able to offer in-house, and the costs saved overall. Hiring additional full-time staff can be very costly and time consuming. Additionally, most small firms can’t afford to match the in-house support that larger companies

42

SARK ADVERT

Some or all AFM activities can be outsourced dependent on the circumstances of the business. Despite significant improvements and user friendly developments in low cost accounting software, many businesses find bookkeeping, payroll and accounts a chore and a time consuming one at that. Not surprisingly the books get neglected and become out of date. It can be very expensive to get the process back up to speed. Major changes and upgrading of accounting processes can often be implemented more successfully when outsourced. Many businesses seek external assistance in compliance and specialist advisory services. Typical activities might include year-end accounts and tax returns, tax and treasury advice, company secretarial work and internal audits, for example. Once a business reaches a certain size it usually has an increased requirement for many parts of the financial management process; performance reporting, business planning, budgeting, costing, forecasting, cash management, pricing, finance, assessing the financial implications of projects and

different strategies. Again these activities may stretch resources and expertise in many firms. Less well-known outsourcing services are available in this area where the service provider will work with your team and on your premises to provide an in-house financial management service on a one off, interim or part-time basis including acting as a part-time financial director or manager. Companies run by owners or managers with different skill sets who want to concentrate on their area of expertise, but recognise the importance of keeping their financial affairs in good order, are likely to find outsourcing of benefit. As will those that do not currently have the in-house expertise or where it is not cost effective or practical to recruit full-time staff. Start-ups or businesses planning significant change or rapid growth, those struggling, in financial difficulty or when the bills and paperwork threaten to take over, may require specialised support. When considering outsourcing it’s worth noting whether you already posses, or can recruit the necessary skills to do the job in-house, or would it be better to outsource to someone with the right skills who can do the same job in less time, in a more cost effective way and without having any negative effects on the business. Perhaps the more important question is the extent to which a business can leverage the full benefits from focusing on its core activities. Assessing and quantifying these benefits particularly those generated through innovation, product development, improved productivity or increased market share for example is crucial in the decision-making process.

making a difference in the local community With over 300 local charities listed as members on the Guernsey Association of Charities website, and numerous other projects and initiatives, there are certainly plenty of opportunities to get involved in the community. Much of this volunteering goes on quietly behind the scenes, and anyone who attended the 2014 Guernsey Community Foundation Awards cannot fail to have been struck by the range of activities that Guernsey’s third sector supports. As well as dedicated individuals, Guernsey’s business community is also involved through corporate social responsibility (CSR) activities. CSR encompasses a wide range of support. For some it means providing financial assistance to charities, but central to the CSR philosophy of BWCI, winner of the Guernsey Community Foundation’s 2014 CSR award, is drawing on its own experience and skills helping to make an idea on a charity’s wish list become a reality.

BWCI has a long history of supporting the community, with the BWCI Foundation

BWCI focuses on four key areas: developing problem-solving skills; sport;

music; and its staff-nominated charity of the year. Numerous events are supported annually, ranging from the BWCI Maths Masterclasses and the BWCI Mind Sports workshops to the BWCI Mini Soccer Festival and the BWCI Camerata Concert Series. BWCI’s partnership with Guernsey Mind has developed over the last 18 months; initially through HR manager, Alison Hawkins, who is a member of Mind’s Employment Project. The links were reinforced when BWCI staff voted Guernsey Mind as the chosen charity of the year. Alison said: ‘Working in partnership with Guernsey Mind, we hope that BWCI has made a positive contribution towards raising awareness of mental health issues and broken down barriers to talking about them.’ According to Guernsey Mind’s statistics, one in six workers experience depression,

BWCI’s volunteers provided much of the administrative support, from designing the entry forms and processing the applications, to acting as marshals on the day.

They also entered their own team of 10 runners. Aimed particularly at those who had never attempted an endurance run, despite the traditional bank holiday torrential downpour, the event attracted 130 entrants, raised over £6,000 for Mind and hopefully is set to become a regular event in the athletics calendar in future.

Mind sought to tackle this lack of employer knowledge through an employers’ conference. However this was a significant undertaking, on top of its regular support services, with just a handful of staff. BWCI was able to draw on its experience of running client seminars to relieve Mind of the administration associated with 100 delegates, allowing Mind to focus on the conference content. BWCI also provided the venue and administrative support for the series of follow-up employer workshops. The broadening scope of HR In today’s ever changing world, human resources (HR) goes beyond just handling payroll and recruitment. Katie Bellingham of the Focus Group explains the benefits of outsourcing HR services

As the business environment develops, so too does the HR remit. Gone are the days when the HR department was simply responsible for the paperwork of contracts, policies, payrolls and comforting disgruntled employees. Today the need for pro-active and strategic HR specialists is paramount. HR is about supporting business sustainability and growth and being the voice behind the ‘people impact’ of every decision that is made at a senior level. HR is the ‘gel’ between business and its people and about retaining strategic advantage. Your business need for HR assistance and support will be guided by size, turnover and industry, however, if you employ people then you are already involved in some HR practice whether you want to be or not. When you feel you need extra support and assistance with your people you might want to consider outsourcing. The biggest advantage to outsourcing your HR requirements is the ability to flex your resource dependent on what you need and how pro-active you want to be. Focus can support you in many different ways. You may not have the need for a full-time HR resource and therefore we provide the full range of HR services to you on an ad hoc basis. You may have an internal HR team, but need additional resources to assist at peek times, cover for leave or projects. If you are just starting up then you will need guidance and support to get you on the right track and ensure you start your business with good employee relations from the outset. At Focus we have the expertise to handle a variety of situations and the

46

knowledge of what is best practice and the market trend. Because we work across a number of industries and disciplines, we are at the forefront of what is happening in the market and this gives you the insight that, as an independent business, you might otherwise miss out on.

The biggest advantage to outsourcing your HR requirements is the ability to flex your resource dependent on what you need and how pro-active you want to be. If you have fewer than 50 employees you should definitely consider outsourcing your HR needs. At this size, or less, you are unlikely to have the workload required for an in-house HR team, however your business and employees still deserve a professional and pro-active HR service. For smaller businesses without a HR function, the MD is often called upon to deal with HR duties, for reasons of confidentiality, however he or she does not necessarily have the skills or experience necessary for a proactive approach to more complex HR issues. When outsourcing to a HR consultancy, you can

rest assured that you do not have to worry about managing all the HR details that are so critical to your business, as most small business owners just don’t have the time or experience to do everything. HR activities must be handled correctly; errors can be time consuming and costly to your business, such as an unnecessary disciplinary matter or, in the worst cases, claims through the employment tribunal. If you are uncertain about outsourcing, but know you do not have the staff or experience to do all HR in-house, you could start by considering outsourcing certain parts, such as payroll or benefits. Whatever you decide is best for you, it won’t harm to consult us about the best course of action. It is best to have a plan in place and a consultancy in mind so you can easily move forward when the time is right. In the long run it would be better to bear the initial cost of ensuring compliant employee handbooks and legally binding contracts rather than incur the costs related to unfair dismissal claims in the future. If you contract us on a retained basis you will also have the benefit of access to our expertise should any issues arise that need immediate attention – you will have peace of mind that you, your valued staff and your business are in safe hands for many years to come.

Mind the gap Susie Crowder of CISA considers what needs to be done to develop a talent pipeline of strategic leaders to meet the needs of tomorrow’s business Board refreshment and planning for director succession are key functions of any board. Some markets such as the UK, have adopted best practices on a complyor-explain basis that aims to limit a director’s tenure to nine years of board service, beyond which, investors may question a director’s independence from management. Such best practices have helped lower average board tenure, and have encouraged boards to focus on refreshment of director skills and plan for director succession in an orderly manner. Our analysis of 2013 data, shows the average board tenure across 1,300 UK listed companies was approximately 6.4 years. In comparison, the average board tenure across 5,600 US listed company board was 8.6 years. As a result, only 6% of UK companies, compared to 20% of US companies, had directors with a tenure of 12 years or more. A comparison of average board tenure across countries in Western Europe revealed that Spain (7.7 years) and France (7.4 years) had the longest average tenured boards while German boards (5 years) had the shortest average tenure in the region. The European Commission has recommended a 12-year director tenure as a best practice for EU based companies. It is anticipated that average board tenure in EU companies will fall over the coming years. With this in mind, coupled with the challenge of the demographic time bomb which poses a real threat to businesses across the Channel Islands, succession planning and talent pipeline initiatives are essential to ensure an organisation’s sustained advantage. The challenge however is to begin the engagement process with tomorrow’s leaders today. Who, within your organisation, or wider network is ready, willing and able to make the step to the next level; to the boardroom?

48

Furthermore, once you have identified that talent what are you doing to develop it to ensure that once the chairs around the boardroom have been re-arranged, the fresh blood can come in and hit the ground running. The bottom line is, there is significant work to be done in preparing for the transition period over the next few years.

A new pan-islands initiative has been established to assist local businesses and aspiring leaders to bridge the gap to the boardroom. Through an annual series of lunchtime events, typically hosted by FTSE leaders or prominent business leaders and sponsored by Ravenscroft, Thomas and Dessain, past, present and future business leaders can learn how best to embark on the challenge of the changing landscape at board level. Top talent is today’s competitive differentiator that makes the difference between an organisation that is thriving and one that is stagnant or declining. The workshop series will provide insight to topical subject areas such as, ‘so you want to be a NED but do not know how,’ through to ‘my FTSE 100 story’. The high calibre speakers will share ‘money cannot buy’ experiences, provide food for thought and inspiration on how best to begin bridging the gap.

Will diversity come into the question? Possibly, but in the full meaning of the word, not just gender diversity. Before we embarked on this initiative, we carried out a wide scale consultation with industry. Diversity (gender or otherwise) is a hot topic at the moment. Frankly, I am amazed that, in today’s society, we can allow for gender specific initiatives to be established. What about the other half of the economically active population who are equally hungry for the boardroom promotions? I am a firm believer in the best person will get the job and fundamentally do not support any sort of imposed quotas. This initiative is much more about adopting a constructive approach to providing up-skilling, strategic exposure opportunities to the next generation of business leaders across the Channel Islands.

Relationships and recruiting Nick Graham of OSA Recruitment looks at the impact of social media on the recruitment process and considers the importance of personal touch Love it or hate it, social media is playing an increasingly significant role across much business activity and has become an integrated part of most companies’ communications strategies.

Add to this the potential annoyance of individuals receiving unsolicited messages as well as the impersonality of the approach, and the benefits of the personal attention of recruitment agencies look more attractive.

A social media policy is now a ‘must have’ element of most organisations’ corporate governance document suites. Corporate use of social media channels extends way beyond the arguably more obvious areas such as PR and marketing and some companies are turning to these relatively new channels as part of their recruitment process.

Using an agency will almost always deliver a more successful match. Recruitment professionals can bring real value through their knowledge and experience as well as a level of anonymity for the candidates – factors that are particularly important at senior levels and within a small island community where trust and discretion are incredibly important.

Social media platforms such as LinkedIn, Facebook and Twitter can perhaps offer a cost-effective channel for organisations to advertise vacancies or, on a more pro-active level, to use as a searchable database for potential candidates to fill a role. Many candidates (around 30% and rising) use these channels as the first place to seek out potential roles, so the use of social media is undoubtedly a trend set to stay. But does that mean that the death knell is sounding for the more traditional recruitment processes and for recruitment agencies themselves? We certainly don’t believe so.

An agency can also avoid an organisation having to filter through the inevitable deluge of candidates that may respond to an online advert.

Whilst LinkedIn and similar sites have a role to play, online searches for candidates can be an extremely time-consuming process for the employer and the cost effectiveness of this approach has not yet been established.

We invest a huge amount of time into building relationships with our clients and candidates. The idea that recruiters can be replaced with a ‘one size fits all’ online solution underestimates and undervalues

50

‘High-volume, low-quality’ issues do not arise with an agency because we assess the attributes of each individual candidate through face-to-face meetings. Working closely with the companies concerned and having an understanding of both their business, and equally importantly, their culture enables us to provide a handpicked selection of highly suitable applicants.

the impact and the benefits a professional recruiter offers. It’s not a question of ignoring social media or pretending it doesn’t exist. For recruitment agencies such as ours to continue to thrive, it’s a question of integrating these ‘new’ platforms into our own activity so at OSA, we have our own LinkedIn presence, Twitter feed and Facebook page which we use to promote roles and to build our own profile. We also advise candidates with regard to their own online profiles (statistics suggest that three out of four employers in the UK check potential new hires’ profiles before making the final offer and one in three have rejected candidates on the basis of what they found). There is no doubt that new mobile technologies, online platforms and emerging media channels have changed certain behaviours both for corporations and individuals. But the role of the recruitment consultant will continue to thrive and negative commentary on social media delivering a death blow for agencies such as ours is frankly not the case. For the most effective recruitment solutions, the personal touch will continue to be one of the most valuable tools in the box. Perhaps ironically, ‘social’ recruitment is perhaps the least ‘social’ way to recruit. Human contact continues to be an essential part of the recruitment process and we see no reason for this to change.

Recruitment through the years Melissa Campbell of Situations Recruitment takes a look at how the recruitment process has changed as technology has progressed

I have been employed by Situations Recruitment for nearly 13 years now and in that time I have seen a huge change in technology and in the way that we work. When I first joined Situations, we used to send out speculative CVs by post, with all consultants sitting together to double-check the list of companies that should or should not be approached on behalf of a candidate. The ‘first come first served’ friendly agreement between local recruitment agencies regarding the submission of CVs, which is still in place today, relied on the varied timings of postal deliveries at our client companies. Then came email and with it our CV submissions sped up significantly, to just a couple of minutes per application. It enabled us to send CVs to our clients very quickly, as soon as permission to apply for that role was obtained from the candidate. Prior to mobiles, we made many telephone calls to our candidates’ landlines in the early morning or evening when they could talk freely about their job search. Then with the arrival of the mobile phone and texting, candidates were much more contactable in the daytime in a discreet manner in order to run new vacancies by them, arrange interviews, and discuss anything else related to their job search. Next we installed texting software on our PCs, which works like email and means that we can send and receive texts from our computers. Again this has sped up our processes and we have a paper trail to prove that candidates have given specific permission to apply for a relevant vacancy, which is an important factor in

52

the Code of Professional Conduct of our governing body, the Recruitment and Employment Confederation. Remote system access also means that we can be working in the evenings and weekends if required. But not all developments in technology in the recruitment industry have resulted in time savings. Nowadays, many major international organisations outsource their staffing to external recruiters who operate web portals for all CV submissions. These portals can also be used to monitor and report on the number and type of applications made. However, portal submissions involve entering significant information and forms for each candidate as well as their CV, so the process is unfortunately slowed down somewhat. Extensive pre-screening of candidates is another development, particularly for temps. As a matter of course, we obtain a full pack of documentation from every candidate who registers with us, whether permanent or temporary. This includes a Right to Work document, photo ID, qualification certificates, Police Basic Disclosure report and two references. The administration required in the running of a recruitment agency has increased significantly over the last few years, meaning we now have a dedicated full time administrator who assists us with portal applications and pre-screening of candidates. The attraction of new candidates has also changed. Whereas the local newspaper was previously the main media for sourcing candidates, nowadays we have a range of

social media that we can also use. We are constantly using Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, as well as Google advertising, in order to attract new applicants for our huge range of vacancies. These media are extremely measurable, meaning that we can thoroughly analyse the reports to assess which postings are working well for us. What has remained throughout the term of this agency, which was set up nearly 30 years ago, is the personal service we provide and on which we pride ourselves. We take a lot of time to get to know both our client companies and candidates in order to find the best fit for both sides. The quality relationships we have developed and maintained with our clients over the years mean that we can match up our candidates more thoroughly to their job requirements, and at the same time help our candidates throughout the process of finding their dream role. One of our main USPs is that we regularly keep in touch with both our clients and candidates. On the client side, this means we keep apprised of any changes in their structure, industry developments and expansion. For candidates, it means that what could potentially be a stressful time in their lives is made much easier by our keeping them informed at every stage of their job search. Working in recruitment you need to move with the times, adapt to new technologies and processes and relish the challenge of change. However our experience, qualifications, proactive approach and high quality personal service are factors that have remained throughout and will certainly continue.

Property solutions that match the needs of high performing businesses

For most professional and service businesses, renting suitable premises is often the largest monthly expense item after staff costs. On top of rent, service charges, insurance, liability for business rates, the capital cost of telecommunication systems, fixtures and furniture, plus decorating and interior fit-out charges over the lifetime of the lease can all combine to give an overall monthly spend that in effect triples or quadruples the headline rental costs. Moreover, a traditional five to 10-year fixed term rental agreement does not allow for the ups and downs of commercial life and variances in the amount of space needed at different phases in the business cycle. Similarly, there is no flexibility to relocate or spread staff across multiple sites in order to test new market locations, to be nearer key clients or to support in-house projects.

In contrast to the fixed geography of traditional leases, successful modern businesses share three linked characteristics – flexibility, speed and adoption of technology. High performing companies have become faster in responding to market needs and more flexible in the way they deploy their resources – whether that is locating their staff or allocating their financial capital. At the same time, they have become more dependent on technology to deliver services, reduce costs and increase their reach to international markets. Despite these advances in the way businesses compete, the way many organisations buy office space remains locked in the past with long-term leases and rental agreements tied to a fixed location. Instead of conserving capital for other projects, this way of procuring office space is capital intensive in terms of the expenditure needed on leases, rental

deposits, facilities improvements and liabilities for dilapidations. One entrepreneur with headquarters in Guernsey has built a network of 28 serviced offices by offering an alternative property solution. ‘I saw an opportunity for high quality serviced offices on terms that match the way the most demanding businesses operate,’ said Philip Grace, founder and chief executive officer of i2Office Guernsey. ‘That means we are able to offer offices by the hour, the day, the week or the year, without the need to tie up capital in rental deposit agreements and leases.’ According to Philip, over the last five years, serviced offices have become the property solution of choice for both small and medium enterprises (SMEs) and corporate clients worldwide because they offer a flexible and lower cost alternative.

53

i2 O F F IC E

The pay-as-you-use approach to space rental gives modern businesses the flexibility they need to execute their strategies for growth and meet the needs of clients. Serviced offices also remove the distraction and expense of companies having to manage their property and the associated support services and allows them to focus on their core operations. Data from the UK’s Building Services Research and Information Association suggests that the average cost for

‘i2Office’s low monthly charges include rent, service charge, TRP, heating and lighting,’ points out Philip. ‘Costs are further reduced because the shared common facilities in a serviced office result in a smaller net space requirement. With zero capital expenditure, no dilapidations liability and immediate availability, serviced offices are now a viable option for new companies coming to the island or existing companies looking to expand or take advantage of lease breaks.’

guests or theatre-style gatherings for up to 150 attendees. ‘Guernsey was chosen as our first development outside the UK mainland because it is a truly international financial centre. With a vibrant and expanding economy, plus high quality of life, Guernsey offers i2Office a superb platform for future international expansion,’ said Philip.

The new offices can accommodate all sizes of operations, from small teams of startup

maintaining office space – including the time and money spent on hiring cleaners, technicians, security and other facilities support staff – can run to over £20 per square metre of gross internal area. By contrast, in a serviced office solution, these costs are all included in the monthly fee with no management time spent on coordinating these varied facilities services. In December 2014, i2Office launched the first prestige serviced offices in Guernsey following the opening of over 20,000 square feet of Grade A space on St Julian’s Avenue. The newly opened serviced offices in Royal Chambers in the heart of the financial district have superb views over the harbour. i2Office has configured the space to offer a combination of high quality serviced offices for rental on flexible, competitive terms with top-grade technology services, including superfast broadband via a 100MB data line and the latest MITEL walk around telephone handsets. 54

grumpy Mike Brown is

old (wo)man.

Patchy service levels, ghostly entertainment and being told off by your own children – some of the things Mike Brown wanted to get off his chest. Mike is this issue’s Grumpy old (wo)man

55

G R U M PY OLD (WO)MA N As former chief executive of the States of Guernsey – or States’ supervisor as the role was known when he first took up the position – Mike has undoubtedly experienced a few things over the years that irritated him. Now retired, following a long successful career in the Guernsey civil service, he still plays an active role in the local business community, as well as being kept busy by his young family and his recently acquired Cockapoo puppy. Mike is not someone you would really put into the ‘grumpy’ category, but, like the rest of us, there are a few things that get under his skin.

‘I totally accept that there will be a small premium to pay at times to support local retailers. But the continual rationale of ‘freight costs’ that is used to justify price differences can only go so far. To give a specific example, I was shopping for some electronic goods quite recently and I spent some time researching prices locally and online (the accountant in me still surfaces from time-to -time). Again I was keen to support a local outlet. But having found what I was looking for I was amazed to discover the goods in question were being offered locally for about twice the price compared with an online site – and to compound the issue, the model offered in Guernsey was one or

Bad – or even average – customer service delivery is one of the things that Mike finds hard to tolerate. ‘It seems to me that you can often get things done a lot quicker in the UK than in Guernsey. It’s not right across the board but I have certainly had some experience of pretty indifferent attitudes to customer service. I think that the island has to be aware of the danger of becoming a bit complacent. We have benefited from the pretty comfortable lifestyle that Guernsey’s s uccessful and vibrant economy has delivered to the local population but we have to be careful not to take things for granted. It’s a very competitive world out there.’ As far as technology in business is concerned, Mike’s view is quite simple. ‘The online phenomenon is only going to grow. The internet and all things digital are here to stay. So I have to confess that I do get irritated when I hear people complaining about how the internet is destroying their profit line – which we hear particularly from the retail sector. The online world has changed, and will continue to change, how people do business. Rather than complain about it, businesses across all sectors must embrace it. Modern technologies have destroyed geographical boundaries and can extend a company’s marketing reach significantly. A local business that I am involved in has benefited greatly by exploiting online marketing. It is now providing its services to markets that would have been unthinkable a few years ago without a physical presence. The internet is part of life now and Guernsey must use it to full advantage rather than hope it will go away.’ Retail pricing is something else Mike feels strongly about.

56

opened on a device other than a PC. Online streaming, innumerable choices when it comes to channel selection have changed the landscape entirely. For Mike there is a bit of an issue about the balance of old and new with regard to content. ‘We are entertained by ghosts these days. Every time I turn on a radio I hear Debbie Harry and the TV is full of old films and repeats from the ‘70s and ‘80s. Don’t get me wrong, I am actually a bit of a closet Debbie Harry fan, and classic black and white movies have their place. But I just think that the balance is a bit skewed.’ And tablets give Mike another challenge that is faced by so many parents on a day-to-day basis.

Have you ever been told off by a six-yearold for playing your music too loud? What is that all about? And my daughter is obviously already far too health conscious and tutted at me the other day when she caught me putting red milkon my cornflakes! two ‘generations’ behind. I would like to think this was an isolated incident but …’ Consumption of TV and radio entertainment has, as we all know, changed incredibly in recent years - particularly with the proliferation of the mobile devices that now surround us. Some sources suggest that 90% of internet users will access it from a mobile device by 2017 (currently around 70%) and already around 50% of emails are

‘Entertainment for children these days is almost all on screen whether it’s social media, TV or the latest version of Minecraft. We try to ‘ration’ time spent on tablets and phones in our house – quite tricky with a six and an 11-year-old. These devices have their place and I would struggle to cope without one - but again it’s a question of balance and we have to try to avoid them becoming totally intrusive.’ Role reversal or role-play was probably something that was very familiar to Mike on the numerous courses that he no doubt attended during his civil service career. His more recent experience of it is something quite different and something he finds more amusing than irritating. ‘Have you ever been told off by a six-year-old for playing your music too loud? What is that all about? And my daughter is obviously already far too health conscious and tutted at me the other day when she caught me putting red milk on my cornflakes!’ Mike is far from being in his dotage but he laughs at his experience of the ageing process. ‘I suppose no one likes getting old. For me it was as much of a shock as anything. I remember being in a rush to get a few groceries (including red milk) and becoming a bit impatient at the aisles at Checkers (as it was then) being blocked by lots of ‘older’ people shopping on a Wednesday when all the younger people like me were busy at work. Then in the blink of an eye, I am one of them.’

A LL I N A DAY’ S WORK

All in a day’s work Being well organised, having an ‘open door’ policy in the office, and cappuccino coffee are just three of the things that help Katie Blampied through the working day. Contact caught up with her – unsurprisingly over coffee – to find out what constitutes her working day.

ALL I N A DAY ’ S WOR K

Katie runs Coast Media, a design and advertising agency that she set up in 2007 with business partner Barry Wells and which employs eight staff.

in the air this is really important and one of my daily tasks is to check deadlines are hit and liaising with suppliers to make sure they are also on track.’

With responsibility both for client account handling as well as running the business, Katie’s day can throw anything into the mix and generally offers variety, sometimes creates surprises and always involves enjoyment.

Katie has tried to create a relaxed working environment at Coast and is a strong believer in devolving responsibility to her team.

‘I consider myself very lucky because I absolutely love what I do. I know it’s a cliché but there is no such thing as a typical day for me. One minute I can be checking over an advert or giving my opinion on a new logo, the next preparing a new business proposal, having a team meeting or taking a client call.’ Katie’s day normally starts at 5.30am and before she arrives at the office soon after 8am she has already walked the dog, completed an hour or so’s work at home and picked up the much-needed cappuccino en route.

We all share the same passion about delivering great client service and responding promptly to client emails and queries which is so important no matter what sector you work in.

‘That first hour’s work is a good time to catch up with some of the administrative tasks that come with running a business. I do tend to do a lot of that work from home, but that’s par for the course and I don’t mind in the least. I’m not human until after the first coffee of the day so a stop-off at Waitrose has become a bit of a ritual.’ Katie’s work philosophy is always to be available to staff and clients alike. ‘The office is open plan which I think is so much better for sharing ideas and general collaboration. I like to be available to help or advise if any of the team has questions, or an issue to deal with. We all share the same passion about delivering great client service and responding promptly to client emails and queries which is so important no matter what sector you work in. ‘I consider myself as being well organised – though you wouldn’t necessarily think that if you saw my desk. Having a comprehensive ‘to do’ list and, where possible, planning ahead are both key to ensuring that things don’t slip through the net. With so many balls

‘I think it’s so essential to trust people to get on with things. I am quite particular and very thorough in my approach but at the same time I can’t be looking over shoulders at every minute of the day. I also think that it’s important to ‘muck in’ at every level so I will answer the phone (I have been referred to previously as Chris George’s PA on more than one occasion!), make the tea or do anything else that’s needed. Coast is essentially my second family.

when she might expect her James Last CD to be delivered. We were on the phone for a good five minutes trying to work out who she needed to call. I never did find out if it arrived in the end.’ When it comes to ‘switching off’ Katie is typical of most business owners – it can be difficult. ‘I try to switch off completely on a Friday evening though sometimes I will catch up with some admin over the weekend. And I have to confess to checking emails on holiday but I don’t spend the whole time worrying about work – I have a team back in the office to do that. It is essential to take a break to re-charge the batteries.’ Katie couldn’t think of anything she has to do in the day that she doesn’t like. Her ‘favourites’ list on the other hand was quite long. ‘This might sound ridiculous but I love looking at new paper stock samples and I look forward to our favourite paper merchant visiting. There is something quite exciting about seeing a print project completed when you have a fabulous new brochure in your hand. We undertake a fair amount of work for digital use now and I am excited about the new opportunities that technology continues to create. But for me there will always be a place for the printed word too. ‘I also love being part of a new business launch, helping to create the branding, developing its first website then watching it grow and develop, knowing we were there at the start. It’s a great feeling.’ The other ‘regular’ in Katie’s day is taking her shih tzu Pepper, who is very much part of the Coast family, for a lunchtime walk around the block. ‘It clears my head and gets me out of the office for 15 or 20 minutes every day.’

‘On one occasion I picked up a call quite late in the day from an elderly lady, who had clearly got the wrong number, asking

in charge If I were

Ever imagined yourself in the ‘big seat’ with the power and ability to make changes, influence futures and … well what else would you do? Contact asked Jo Delbridge, Specsavers’ director of public relations, how she might behave and what people might think of her if she were pounding the corridors of power.

60

I F I W E RE I N CH ARGE

What type of leader do you think you would make?

Who would make up your cabinet or policy council?

A very organised one, or as my husband calls it… ‘bossy’. Actually, my team at Specsavers might agree with him!

Simon Cowell – he is a decision maker who gets things done and isn’t afraid of what people think of him – he’s his own man!

The skill(s) I have that would be key in the role…

Malala Yousafzai – she is an influential communicator, an educational activist and above all a humanitarian who understands what young people need. We need more young voices in politics.

Delegation and decisiveness. One of the hardest career lessons for a control freak like me has been to learn to delegate and to trust my team. Dame Mary Perkins always says that you can’t be good at everything and the success of Specsavers is very much down to employing people with the appropriate skills to take the business forward. Enabling people to be the best that they can be is a critical attribute for any leader. What’s the one thing you would change on day one (however small)? Reduce the number of deputies. One thing you learn in business is that the bigger the committee the less likely it is to reach a quick decision! What’s your view of the current political structure and its suitability to take Guernsey through the next decade? What improvements would you make? See above! We need to let go of the rosy image of Guernsey as it was in the 50s and 60s in its tourism and horticultural heyday, and embrace a new vision for our future. It wouldn’t do any harm to consider how other successful island communities operate rather than be forever looking inwards or backwards. We also seem to nurture a great capacity for having the same debate over and over again – paid parking anyone? What’s your position on party politics in relation to Guernsey? Wow! What would each party manifesto look like? Would there be the ‘ship our waste to Jersey’ party and the ‘ban the 11-plus’ party? It is hard to imagine what issues would unite each group and how you would segregate them. I imagine that one of the good things about Guernsey politics is that our representatives do get to vote on single issues and we can support them, or not, accordingly.

I would add my step-son Jake Delbridge to that mix, he has a wise and very clever head on his young shoulders, is passionate about politics and often views things from a different perspective. And alongside him my nephew Jack, who is studying pharmacology at Cambridge and who has been given a brief by his Aunty Jo to discover an anti-ageing pill pretty damn quickly! Jeff Bezos, the chief executive of Amazon, for his business and technology acumen. We live in an age of digital communications and consumerism and our small towns need to rethink their offering – times have changed, whether people like it or not. England’s first female physician, Elizabeth Garrett Anderson, who opened the New Hospital for Women in London in 1872 – someone needs to shake up the health service and get to grips with our ageing population! Finally, Nelson Mandela for his ability to unite people, and for his energy and optimism – I am a great believer in having a half full glass! If I were in charge there would be no more… Prevaricating! Every decision carries risk, and sometimes we may get things wrong. The dichotomy of being a politician in Guernsey is the need to be popular with the electorate, but have to sometimes make unpopular decisions. It means we often put off what we need to just get on with so the sooner it will become an accepted part of day-to-day life. We have led the way in so many things, like banning smoking in public spaces – I can’t imagine sitting in a restaurant now with someone puffing away next to

me – and bags for life. We should embrace that spirit of change and apply it to more areas of island life. Pour and contre – bring in electronic voting with results published immediately online for all to see and get with the 21st century for goodness sake! Chewing gum! It has always been one of my pet hates – the way people think it is perfectly acceptable to spit it out on the street to despoil our roads and pavements – yuk! Actually, can I extend that to all litter and recycling generally… we are so privileged to live in such a beautiful little island, in such an affluent part of the world, it is just downright disrespectful to cover it with rubbish. Which world leader/influencer would you model yourself on or wish to emulate and why? The people who have influenced history, who are most remembered and admired, always appear to have great emotional intelligence. It is why Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi and the Dalai Lama are icons of our times. Their capacity to forgive, to understand what drives people and to empathise, elevated them from the rest of us selfish mortals. One of my father’s sayings was ‘It’s nice to be nice’ and that is very true – we all need to be kinder to each other. People would love or hate me as their leader because… I always like to have the last word but I have a well-developed sense of humour – necessary when you are the eldest of four siblings! But if I didn’t get the job then who should? Sadly, I can’t think of any current political leader who I think does an amazing job. Despite huge improvements in education, science, technology, healthcare and communication, we still have global poverty, starvation, epidemics, war and terrorism – we have learned so much but changed so little of what matters for a peaceable world. And it’s a mantel my shoulders are way too narrow to wear.

“I read it cover to cover.” At Contact magazine, we hear this again and again from our readers; business professionals who are actively developing their services in the island and beyond. Contact is a bi-monthly publication featuring a range of topics and areas of interest to the business community. We focus on Guernsey’s strengths, wisdom, courage—and humour! Our readers are married, single, young, old, “of a certain age”, and everything in between. They are, savvy and educated, and they are responsible for more than 80% of all buying decisions, so advertising with us is really a no-brainer. With quality design and editorial, and a distribution network guaranteed to get your advertising seen, why go anywhere else? For more details and a 2015 media pack, please contact: Julie on 01481 715222 Email: sales@collaboratecommunications.com www.collaboratecommunications.com
