ANGEL FALLS WHERE: Venezuela TYPE: Single Drop TOTAL HEIGHT: 979 m
From a mystical tabletop mountain deep in a Venezuelan equatorial rainforest, the world’s highest uninterrupted waterfall plunges 807 metres (with a total drop of 979 metres). What distinguishes it from other major waterfalls is the minimal commercialization, as accessing Angel Falls is a complicated affair. It’s a site made for adventurers and to get there one has to embark on a plane ride, a long river journey and a hike along a rough trail with an overnight stay. But, this all serves to make the experience more authentic. Usually covered in mist or fog, you only have to hope that after travelling so far that you have clear weather and get to see the falls in all it’s glory.
Angel Falls, Venezuela
LL
Angel falls derived it’s name from Jimmie Angel, an adventurous pilot from Missouri, United States, who was the first person to fly over it. When he passed away in 1960, his ashes were scattered over the falls. It’s also worth mentioning that the first travellers could only visit Angel Falls from 1990, making it a true virgin destination of the world.
WATERFA SOF THE WORLD A visit to these phenomenal natural wonders of the world is a thrilling experience. onRoute points out the seven most breathtaking of them all…
PLITVICE FALLS
www.onroutemag.co.za
WHERE: Croatia TYPE: 16 lakes interconnected by a series of waterfalls
4
This is probably one of the more memorable waterfall attractions of the world! As opposed to being one singular attraction, the Plitvice Waterfalls (pronounced Plit-vits-uh) are really a large network of cascading green lakes connected by waterfalls. Set in a deep woodland area populated by deer, bears, wolves, boars and rare bird species, you are literally immersed in the beauty. The Plitvice Lakes National Park is Croatia’s most popular tourist attraction, but these waterfalls were apparently a tourist attraction since the late 19th century and named after a world famous Croatian opera singer of the time. The Park is open daily all year round, with longer opening hours during summer.
Plitvice Falls, Croatia
There’s an entrance fee which acts as a contribution to the Park’s upkeep and protection. Maps are available for a number of different walks, of varying lengths. For some of the most intimate waterfall experiences, wander around the trails of rustic wooden stilt-paths, under, over, and
around almost all of the notable waterfalls. There is also an electric boat that takes you from one side of the largest lake to the other. It’s a stunning place to visit any time of year as the different seasons see the Park take on different hues. Even in the winter snow, Plitvice is an amazing place to see.
GULLFOSS ‘GOLDEN FALLS’ WHERE: Iceland TYPE: Two Tier HEIGHT: 11 m & 21 m
Known as the ‘Golden Falls’ because of the golden colour of the glacial water, this unique waterfall cascades into a narrow gorge and creates the illusion that a mighty river simply vanishes into the earth. On closer inspection, this wild waterfall tumbles in two tiers at 90 degree angles to each other, dropping into a 32 metre abyss. Gullfoss Falls forms part of a collection of popular Icelandic tourist sites, called the Golden Circle. In addition to Gullfoss, the Golden Circle includes the Geysir (an enormous hot spring bursting with warm thermal water), and Thingvellir (a sprawling landscape complete with mountains, valleys and glaciers), which was also the place where ancient Icelandic people came together for Parliament.
Gullfoss ‘Golden Falls’, Iceland
It’s hard to believe that this waterfall was almost sold for hydroelectricity. Ultimately, the state of Iceland took over and conserved it. The more romantic saga tells the story of the daughter of the landowner at the time
threatening to throw herself into the falls if the land was sold commercially. As a result, the father pulled out of the deal. Although, it’s said that this saga isn’t true, there’s a memorial at the falls commemorating the girl.
SUTHERLAND FALLS WHERE: New Zealand TYPE: Three Tier HEIGHT: Upper – 250 m, Middle – 230 m & Lower – 103 m
The Falls first appear as a sparkling through the trees and then the low rumble turns into a giant roar as you are engulfed by its presence and confronted by its full height. The three drops occur in such quick succession that when viewed from the air they appear to be one long drop that drops into a huge pool at its base. The first ever measurement of the falls is thought to have been made by William Quill, an energetic young surveyor, way back in 1980. He attained them by painstakingly
hauling his way up the headwall next to the waterfall. Their remote location is deep in the wild and beautiful Fiordland National Park (a World Heritage Site). There are two ways to see the highest waterfall in New Zealand. Either enjoy a scenic flight by helicopter or airplane. Or take an individual or guided walk along the Milford Track (one of New Zealand’s most popular walks). The base of the falls is only a 90-minute return walk. Easy!

IGUAZU FALLS
The semicircular waterfall spans an incredible two kilometre distance along the border between Argentina and Brazil. This splendid system of waterfalls is actually made up of 275 individual falls. Of the 275, Devil’s Throat is the tallest at 80 metres in height. The site is surrounded by two National Parks (both subtropical rainforests) and host to hundreds of rare

and endangered species of flora and fauna. There are two designated walking trails to experience the falls: an upper and lower path. The lower path leads to the base of
the falls for a unique experience getting drenched in the spray. But for spectacular panoramic views from the footbridge, the upper path is the way to go.

VICTORIA FALLS WHERE: Border of Zimbabwe and Zambia TYPE: Single drop TOTAL: 108 m
Known as the greatest curtain of falling water and one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Vic Falls spans 1.7 kilometres at the border of Zambia and Zimbabwe. With an average flow of a million litres per second, it’s no wonder it’s described as ‘The Smoke that Thunders’. Because of the spray from the falls, it’s also the only place on earth that rains 24 hours a day, seven days a week!
Victoria Falls, border of Zimbabwe and Zambia
If you’re lucky enough to see the falls during a full moon you may witness a Lunar rainbow. Seen through the spray at night, a moonbow is exactly the same as a normal solar rainbow, in colour and shape. Another famous feature of the falls is the naturally formed Armchair, also called ‘Devil’s Pool’ that forms when the river flow is at a safe level (usually between September and December). This naturally formed pool right on the edge of the falls is only for adventurous swimmers, although be warned that occasional deaths have been reported.
NIAGARA FALLS WHERE: Border of Canada and USA TYPE: Collection of three falls TOTAL: 53.6 m
Niagara Falls, border of Canada and USA
A destination for world explorers, honeymooners and daredevils, Niagara Falls is the collective name for three waterfalls that straddle the international border between Canada and the United States. The three falls (the American Falls, the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls) combine to produce the highest flow rate of any waterfall on earth, making it the most powerful by far! In addition to its raw power, it’s also one of the easiest to access and view from all sorts of angles. Niagara Falls was the birthplace of commercial hydroelectric power and today 50 to 75 percent of the water flowing along the Niagara River is diverted from going over the falls to hydroelectric power generating stations. Interesting to note, however, that during peak season when tourist numbers are high, the hydroelectric stations in the area divert less water ensuring a spectacular flow of water for visitors. Ice formations along the banks of the falls are common and if the winter is cold for long enough, the ice can completely stretch across the river and form what is known as the ice bridge. Until 1912 visitors were actually allowed to walk on the ice bridge and view the falls from below. Not the best idea, so it has since banned.

Launched in 1871, it is one of SA’s most treasured food brands. Amelia Ball began making chutney from her home in Fish Hoek using her mother’s recipe. Her husband, Herbert, sold the chutney while working as a superintendent at the railway station. In 2013 Tiger Brands acquired Mrs Ball’s™ from Unilever.
Chappies® Bubblegum Created by Arthur Ginsburg of Johannesburg in the 1930s, Chappies® was rivalled by Wicks bubblegum, but the fun ‘Did You Know’ trivia on the wrapper won them massive favour. Chappies® became used as a form of currency by shopkeepers who ran out of small change – instead of getting one cent, you would get two Chappies®.
Ouma Rusks® In 1939 in the small town of Molteno in the Eastern Cape, ‘Ouma’ Elizabeth Anne Greyvensteyn baked a batch of rusks for a church congregation and was soon inundated with orders. As demand grew the Greyvensteyn family decided to convert their barn into South Africa’s first rusk bakery. Ouma remained involved in the business until she died in 1989, aged 98. Today, the Ouma® Rusk business is the lifeblood of the town’s economy.

INTERNATIONAL Hákarl Eaten in Iceland, Hákarl is cured Greenland Shark hung to dry for four to five months. Shark meat is poisonous when raw, but allowing it to decay fully gets rid of the uric acid in the flesh. Once cured and dried, it is cut into small pieces and served as is. This dish is renowned for its foul smell and for being very much an acquired taste. Most nonIcelandic people who have eaten it describe it as the worst thing they have ever tasted!
Casu Marzu Rotten pecorino cheese containing thousands of maggots, originating in Sardinia, Italy. The whole pecorino cheese is left to ferment, with a portion of the rind removed to allow flies to lay eggs in it; the digestive action of the maggots turns the cheese to Casu marzu. As it’s considered unsafe to eat when the maggots are dead (the EU even banned it for a while), the cheese is eaten with live maggots. Served with wine or on Sardinian flat bread, you have to hold your hand over the cheese to prevent the maggots from leaping off! (The maggots can launch themselves up to 15 centimetres!

What are some of the challenges and triumphs of your job as a photographer?
16
As a commercial freelance photographer in South Africa, I’m on a constant roller coaster where one week I may have six shoots and the next week I may have none. Fortunately for me, I’m not one for routine and I love being able to squeeze in a road trip when things are quiet. I guess I have triumphed in that I’ve managed to make a career from what many people only practice as a hobby.
How has becoming a registered

What has been your biggest lesson learnt through travel? Patience, improvisation, and to always wear a friendly smile – especially at border control! If you want to shoot a scene in the best light, then you need to choose your travel companions carefully or go it alone.
Which of your travel photographs tell the best stories? We can never relive time passed, so it’s wonderful when you can capture a series of successive, fleeting moments as they pass by. When documenting a trip, I like to take a series of images that summarise the journey and capture the essence, heart and mood as I experienced it. To me it’s important to capture the wider picture, as well as the details shoot only one or the other, and only half the story is told. Details with no sense of place just float in a void, and a singular wide image leaves you begging to dig deeper.

When it comes to travel, what still remains on your personal bucket list? I aim to see the number of countries equivalent to my age. I check in on my list every five years. I haven’t travelled to the East or South America at all and I’d like to see as many World Heritage Sites as possible.

Your thoughts on the influence of social media and Instagram on the evolution of photography?
20
It’s great that everyone has the opportunity to document their lives and share their points of view visually with others. Personally, I’ve reached saturation point on the ‘happy snaps’ and ‘selfies’ though. How many more people’s cellphone Instagram pics (with a filter overlay) of food or random objects do you need or want to see?
How have you evolved as a photographer through your own body of work? When it comes to travel photography, you’re at the mercy of nature and where the adventure chooses to take you. I’ve always
been a modernist at heart with its clean lines and simplicity. I love negative space and loathe post-modernism. From when I started out shooting, until the day I can no longer hold a camera, I value the basic principles of design and composition. I hope to always reflect this in my work. There’s always room for improvement though and I’m happy to keep learning.
What is your advice to aspiring travel photographers? Shoot as much as you can. If in the beginning you can’t afford to travel, pretend to be a tourist or traveller passing through your hometown. Spend hours sitting patiently and quietly watching a single subject and get used to getting up well before sunrise. Learn to travel light because your photography gear is going to take up most of your space and weight allowance. www.emielke.co.za

Suzuki Ertiga
“…designed to be a runaround for a big family, so you wouldn’t need it to win a drag race.”
This seven-seater family car is the only Suzuki we didn’t fall 100% in love with. The Ertiga is a big, cumbersome mom’s wagon that doesn’t quite deliver what we hoped for. The fact that it is called a seven-seater made us scratch our heads to start with, because the two back seats are almost non-existent. A toddler would struggle with leg room back there, but thankfully the seats can be rearranged, because when all seven seats are in use, you can barely get a laptop in the boot. The finishing’s on the model we tested were not to our taste, but there are enough options to choose from to suit even the pickiest of drivers. The Ertiga is neither quick nor comfortable at high speeds, but it’s designed to be a runaround for a big family, so you wouldn’t need it to win a drag race. The fuel economy is respectable and for the very low price, it does fill a gap in the market.

THE SWIFT 1.2 GL
26
This particular version of the Swift has been made to cater for the lower end of the market and has a smaller engine than the more popular version we tested. What we loved about this particular Swift was the fact that it gives the driver more bang for their buck than some of the other manufacturers who try and take on the lower end hatch market. Suzuki do not cut corners or compromise on the quality of the build when they produce their vehicles, and the Swift 1.2 GL is a perfect example of a budget buy, with luxury delivery. The 1.2 litre engine is by no means a rocket ship, but it delivers just enough oomph to make the ride exciting and the fuel economy will blow your mind. The small size does not compromise the comfort, and although the boot is small, it is ample for everyday use.

“…the Sport is great fun to drive!”
THE SWIFT SPORT The Swift Sport was another member of the Suzuki family we have had the opportunity to drive before. In our previous review we found little wrong with the Sport, but did feel that the sport badge was merely decoration. This newest version however does have a little more zip under the bonnet to justify its sporty tag. The engine packs a decent punch and the outlandish designs mean the Swift Sport certainly stands out on the road. We received it in what Suzuki calls ‘Champion Yellow’ which can best be described as shockingly bright. But the eye-stinging colour was a great addition to the Swift’s character. As with all Swifts, the Sport is great fun to drive! The light weight of the car, low centre of gravity and decent suspension mean it provides many thrills without any spills. The heavier price tag still means we would probably opt for the normal Swift over the Sport, but for those of you looking for something a little funkier and a little quicker, the Swift Sport is the perfect fit for you.

SX4 ALLGRIP FACTS
We tested the first version of the SX4 a couple of years ago and it proved to be a real surprise! The little 4x4 packed a big punch for its size and definitely competed well against cars that were bigger in size and price. So the new version had big boots to fill. The new SX4 is a very pretty car and no longer falls into the small size bracket either. Suzuki has decided to change the SX4’s formula and place it in a market of bigger SUVs to compete against the more established brands in this segment. We couldn’t help but think that they had a winning formula with the old version, so why change it? The new SX4 is considerably more expensive, and even with the extra size, it didn’t seem like there would be space for it in the already saturated SUV market. But the SX4 is a real winner behind the wheel! It drives superbly well and offers the driver and all passengers terrific comfort. The bigger size means that the engine doesn’t quite pack the punch of the old SX4, but it’s nippy enough to prevent you from urging it up the hill and can get you in and out of sticky traffic situations with certitude and ease.

Every so often, there is a version of FIFA that changes the game a little and this gets all the FIFA fans up in arms. FIFA 15 is out and the internet is abuzz with complaints about glitches in the game that make it “unplayable”. At face value it does seem like there are things seriously wrong with FIFA 15, but underneath it all, this is still a magical game that hasn’t lost a stitch of its appeal or playability. The unfortunate thing about FIFA (for us South Africans) is that you can’t fully appreciate the game’s worth unless you take your play online. With unreliable, expensive and intermittent internet service, online gaming is only slowly catching on in ordinary households around the country, but not quick enough! If you don’t have access to EA’s online services, your default squads will be missing a few key signings and you also won’t be privy to updates that often correct the small glitches that can cause the game to turn your hair grey. However, the overall offering from FIFA 15 is as good as it has ever been and EA’s quest for the most realistic soccer game is nudging ever closer to reality. It does seem as though your PS3 will not deliver on all of FIFA’s best qualities, but it’s still worth buying and definitely worth playing. GAME GURU RATES IT
81% BORDERLANDS: PRE-SEQUEL (PS3) First person shooters are a dime a dozen and most; if not all of them; share the same controls, the same problems and the same inevitable mundanities with regards to game play. What sets all these games apart is their story. If it’s gripping, it will be a great game, regardless of what seems like the same thing packaged differently. Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel is a mesmerizing game set in outer space. Although one would expect the game that followed Borderlands 2 to be rather dull in comparison, The Pre-Sequel is actually a great story on its own. We didn’t find the dialogue in this version as humorous as it was in Borderlands 2, but there were enough interesting characters in the game to keep us wrapped. In The Pre-Sequel, you have your choice of four different characters, all with their own quirks, powers and skills. Your choice of weapons is as good as any first person shooter we have ever played and allows you to choose the best weapon for your mood. The variety of weapons is great when you play with your friends, as it allows each of you to choose a different weapon to make sure your team is impactful on every front possible. We loved the co-op format, it gives you a chance to team up with your mates and complete the game together. The game develops nicely, although there are side missions that require you to finish some seriously arduous tasks that test your patience. Even with the one or two minor glitches in game play, Borderlands is a game you will enjoy playing. The environments are magical, the fighting and game play is entertaining and the chance to team up with mates is irresistible.
THE APP CORNER The thing with a good app is it needs to be simple, addictive and challenging all at the same time. TwoDots is the latest game to make its mark on the mobile gaming scene. The aim of the game is to connect dots of the same colour to get to the next level. As the game advances, the levels develop, making TwoDots highly addictive.
TOP 2 IPAD GAMES TO DOWNLOAD AT THE MOMENT:
TMNT: ROOFTOP RUN Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is all the rage at the moment as they make a return to the big screen. Capitalising on the global craze, a few developers have produced games using the famous turtles as characters. Rooftop Run is a simple and fun game where you choose a turtle and complete various levels, beating a multitude of enemies and tasks to eventually complete the missions at hand. It can provide hours of fun, but can also leave you a bit out of pocket.

Goddess of Fertility

The small town of Ceres is named after the Goddess of Fertility for good reason - it’s the centre of one of the most important fruit producing areas and home to internationally branded Ceres Fruit Juices - one of the largest beverage manufacturers on the African continent (available in 84 countries worldwide!). You will find some of the country’s most beautiful fruit farms tucked away in the valley (a mere 90-minute drive from Cape Town) which are accessed only via scenic mountain passes that will take your breath away!
Ceres is home to the longest zipslide in Africa! If you’re brave enough, it’s the best way to get a bird’s eye view of the valley. If you’re Fruit pickers on the Ceres Fruit Route
not, there’s also quad biking, mountain biking, horseback riding, hiking, golfing, game viewing and 4X4 routes available to keep you
entertained. For something a little more laid back, the river provides some fantastic trout fishing. For the less outdoorsy types, a favourite attraction is the largest private model toy car collection in South Africa. The village of Ceres is also home to a museum and a variety of gift and craft shops, where art lovers can indulge in local art, or buy amazing beadwork. Plus, there are great coffee shops, restaurants, pubs and grills. And, when you’re not buzzing around by day, the evenings will bless you with the most amazing sunsets and the clearest, starlit skies.
THE CERES FRUIT ROUTE Tours to some of the working fruit farms is a must! The Ceres Fruit Route offers visitors a chance to explore the orchards and fruit-packing houses. The Ceres Fruit Growers packing shed is the largest in the southern hemisphere! Peaches, nectarines, apples, apricots, pears and cherries are all grown in the district. You can taste and sample distinctive varieties of sundried fruit and homemade preserves too, which can also be tucked into your basket to enjoy at home. It’s best to visit during fruit picking season (between the months of December and April).

Jump on board their 4x4

Amazingly, the endangered turtles return to the very same beach where they were born (approximately 20 years before) to lay their eggs. Then from January to February it’s time for the little

ADVENTURE
www.onroutemag.co.za
An opportunity to swim with dolphins in their natural environment is an experience that will leave you buzzing for weeks. These fascinating creatures are said to have powerful healing abilities. onRoute finds out more about this wild, unforgettable and exhilarating encounter from EcoPsychologist and Swimming with Dolphin Facilitator, Mandy Young.
54
An EcoPsychologist works with the basic understanding that good mental health and environmental sustainability go hand-in-hand. As we have moved away from our recognition of interdependence with nature and become less emotionally and ecologically intelligent. Getting back to nature helps reconnect us with our roots, without the stresses and strains of our westernized eco-alienated city lifestyles. I have spent over thirty years in my primary profession as a psychotherapist, and two decades observing animals with social behaviour, including African wild dogs, elephants, mountain gorillas, meerkats, white lions, and dolphins. I developed Nature Calls Adventures and Healing Power of Dolphin Experiences so that other people could journey with me.
What inspired your personal journey with dolphins? When I met the dolphins it was a time in my life when I had done much of the tough work required to adjust from a divorce and now it was time to play! Everyone who swims with wild dolphins experiences an acceptance that leaves one with a joie de vivre.
What benefits can one experience from swimming with dolphins? Dolphins are amazing beings with physical, emotional and spiritual prowess. To many ancient civilizations they were a totem for emotional well-being. They are able to scan our bodies and souls and detect weaknesses and imbalances. They have been known to help people with chronic depression emerge out of their blackness and find light and life again. Special needs children with developmental delays have been known to increase in their ability to learn and concentrate by 500% after swimming with dolphins. They are able to realign body systems with their sonar capabilities, stimulate immune systems towards greater health and even more importantly make us feel like we are unique
and worthwhile, motivating most people towards good self-care. Dolphins have been known to break down cancerous tumours, but their ability to inspire love is the greatest gift of all.
What are some of the most memorable encounters you have witnessed in your time doing this work? My most memorable experience was a Healing Power of Dolphin Experience with two pregnant ladies. One of the ladies had miscarried and was concerned this would happen again. She had an amazing swim with two dolphin mothers and their calves which created an incredible sense of well-being for her and the new life growing inside of her. What made this dolphin-human encounter more special is that several months later swimming with the dolphins again this lady was told by them within her heart on a less conscious level that the unborn child within her was in trouble. Her and her partner rushed to the hospital arriving just in time, she had a clot in her arteries that would have lead to a second miscarriage. The boys born from these two different mothers who had encountered the dolphins in their neonatal states live many miles apart, but when they get together, they are inseparable, bound together by this dolphin experience.
What are your greatest concerns in working with these animals?
“Dolphins are amazing beings with physical, emotional and spiritual prowess. To many ancient civilizations they were a totem for emotional well-being.”
!
EDUCATIONAL
Dolphins have become exploited for financial gain because of their incredible healing power. Too often these beautiful creatures are hounded and harassed by those who are seeking a quick buck at their expense. I only work with one researcher in Mozambique, Angie Gullan of DolphinCareAfrica. Angie’s approach with the wild dolphins is of absolute integrity and they know her well. Many people have tried to jump on the proverbial bandwagon, on the path she pioneered.
Where do you run your programmes and what do they entail? The Healing Power of Dolphin experiences take place in Ponto do Ouro, only with Angie Gullan and her partner, Mitch as the researcher and skipper. They are 5 day, 4 night experiences, with an opportunity to stay in a luxury tented camp which is romantic, peaceful, well-equipped and inspiring. On a daily basis I do self-reflective discussion groups after dolphin-human encounters to help participants ground their experience into take-home life-transforming inspirational, personal and professional insights.
Anything you wish to add that people interested in such an experience should know about? Make sure you have a notebook, sunblock, anti-malaria cream and a heart for fun, adventure and a desire to give back to the beautiful dolphins that have inspired your joy and healing.

JOBURG REMAINS AFRICA’S MOST VISITED CITY
Johannesburg is set to be the most popular destination city in Africa for the second year, followed by Cape Town according to the 2014 MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.
“
The City of Gold’s status as the most popular destination city among visitors to the African continent is significant for the economic prospects of the city. Visitor spend is an increasingly important source of revenue for the city’s hospitality, retail, transport, sports and cultural sectors,” says Mark Elliott, Division President, South Africa, MasterCard. Now in its fourth year, the MasterCard Index of Global Destination Cities ranks 132 cities in terms of the number of their total international visitor arrivals and the cross-border spending by these same visitors in the destination cities. It also gives visitor and passenger growth forecasts for 2014.

“The City of Johannesburg welcomes the announcement as it cements our City’s position as the economic capital and the heartland of trade Joburg Zoo Lions and economic activity in Africa,” says Executive Mayor Clr Parks Tau. “We are proud to be the home of most local and multinational companies in banking, finance and industry due to our world-class economic and social infrastructure which is essential to big business.”

Johannesburg expects 4.3 million international overnight visitors in 2014, a 4.9 percent increase on last year’s numbers. Johannesburg also comes out tops in Africa in terms of international visitor expenditure. “The Index recognises cities as important business, cultural and economic hubs. This is where MasterCard comes in. Every day, we help consumers and businesses maximize all of the travel opportunities available to them, including a safe and secure way to pay no matter where they are,” says Elliott.

The Bridge Slide offers sheer fun in front of the falls. The slide begins on the Zambian bank of the gorge and ends on the Zimbabwean side of the bridge. Just step off the edge of the gorge and slide towards the bridge and lap up the incredible views. The slide platform consists of two areas, one of which is available for viewing purposes and the other is restricted solely for the slider/s and the crew.

HEALTH & SAFETY
SAFE NIGHT DRIVING It’s estimated that traffic death rates are three times greater at night than during the day. Night driving presents unique challenges and increased risks. If you cannot avoid driving at this time then be well prepared and adjust your driving to be more defensive! Arrive Alive shares some tips…
USE LIGHTS SAFELY AND EFFECTIVELY • Do not delay using the lights and make yourself more visible to other road users. • Always be careful with your high beams so you don’t blind others and cause a head-on collision. • Slow down if the other driver is blinding you with his high beam – it is not the correct response to match his mistake by doing the same. Think Safety! • If the oncoming vehicle does not dim their lights, look towards the left side of the road and try not to look directly at the oncoming headlights, rather, use your peripheral vision.

• Look at the lane marker as a guide then look quickly ahead to determine the other vehicle’s position. Keep doing this until you have passed the other vehicle.

• Do not use high beams when it’s foggy – they will reduce your own ability to see and may temporarily blind other drivers.
• Be aware that it is more difficult to judge speed and distance at night. So increase following distance to increase crash avoidance space. • If your vehicle is equipped with fog lamps, use them with your low beams only when there is • Take frequent breaks to give your eyes a fog and not for ordinary night driving. chance to recover.
8 DEFENSIVE DRIVING TECHNIQUES FOR NIGHT DRIVING • Plan your route so you’re aware of steep descents, sharp corners and other hazards specific to that route. • When in doubt as to whether you should use your lights, turn them on! • A safe speed should enable you to brake or manoeuvre to avoid a hazard without endangering those around you.
• Be aware that oncoming truck drivers, seated much higher than you may be blinded by your • On rural roads go slower to spot pot-holes lights much earlier than you are be and avoid an accident. their lights!
• Do not assume safety! Approach slowly, look both ways and proceed with caution. • Never use cruise control when driving at night.
CONSIDER YOUR VISION • It is recommended that drivers go for checkups, especially if they believe that they might experience symptoms of night blindness. • At night, we are dependent on artificial light hence our reduced ability to see road signs, vehicles, pedestrians and other hazards. • We are also less able to pick up sudden movements quickly and respond to them effectively at night. • Our eyes often take time to adjust from the wide range of light from pitch dark to strong light.
SAVE ON YOUR FUEL BILL THIS HOLIDAY Whether you’re planning an end-of-year holiday road trip or you’re just plain fed up of spending so much on fuel, listen up! Changing the way you drive can save you more than 30% on your fuel bill.
overtake, negotiate pot holes, stop and park, accelerate to 120km/h as if on a highway and stop for an imaginary toll. The speeds were controlled and monitored. Using on-board diagnostic (OBD2) technology, real-time fuel consumption along with CO2 emissions were measured to ultimately determine the ‘perfect’ economy run,” explains Cock. BP’s tests concluded that savings of 30% and more can be achieved by simply changing the way you drive, which can add thousands of Rands to the average motorist’s pocket. Tailpipe emissions were also reduced by 30%. “The whole philosophy behind fuel efficient driving is that anyone can reduce their emissions if they adopt a few simple techniques,” he says. “These include using the momentum of the car to propel you forward and minimising the amount of accelerating and braking. Other more routine measures such as maintaining the correct tyre pressure, reducing unnecessary weight in the car and shutting your sunroof or windows also helps.”
WHICH ONE IS YOUR EXCUSE? A dozen good excuses for NOT training yourself or your company vehicle drivers. Below are some excuses previously mentioned: “It’s going to cost too much” “It’s still too expensive” “We don’t have the budget for it” “There’s a cut back on spending – the boss would never approve it” “We have too many drivers to train” “We don’t have the time to take our drivers off the road”
And, here are even more! These are reason enough to consider training for yourself or your drivers. “We only have a few drivers”
This makes them even more important to your business! If you only have three reps and one mistaken off road incident, you’ve lost 33% of your sales force and who knows how much business.
“I haven’t had time to look at it”
Try to find 9 minutes today - 5 minutes to select the course, 2 minutes to phone us and book the date and 2 minutes to dictate a memo telling your drivers the details.
“We’ll do it next year”
As part of BP’s national campaign to educate South African motorists about the various aspects that increase fuel consumption, onRoute asked BP’s fuel expert, Peter Cock to identify a sure-fire way of saving money at the pump these holidays.
• Avoid aggressive driving – hard acceleration and braking can increase fuel consumption by as much as 40%. • Avoid high speeds – drive at a steady speed and use the cruise control on long stretches.
He says the biggest step towards fuel efficient motoring isn’t buying a more efficient car, but driving the one you currently own more economically.
• Avoid idling – idling wastes fuel. If you’re going to stop for more than 30 seconds, except in traffic, turn off the engine.
“Changing the way you handle your car can greatly improve fuel efficiency and reduce its impact on the planet. We set out to prove this by conducting a fuel efficiency challenge of our own – not in a lab, but in real-world conditions.
• Select the right gear – keep the engine operating within its powerband and don’t accelerate harder than is necessary. Driving in a gear lower than you need to wastes fuel, so does letting the engine labour in top gear on hills and corners.
“Several participants drove a passenger vehicle a required number of times on a set 9km course. Each driver had to accelerate to 60km/h, break for a simulated emergency,
• Use of high quality fuels – using high quality fuels, such as BP Ultimate, will allow the vehicle to run more efficiently.
Good idea in principal, but will your insurance company wait until next year before they put up your premiums? By this time next year you could have a reducing claims record and be well on the way to reduced premiums.
“Our drivers won’t like it”
Your drivers will love it! Everyone has an opinion on driving, their own and other people’s. We help them learn from each other. Interactive training including PEP activities are effective and fun.
“We don’t need it”
True, if you don’t have any accident problems, you can’t improve your fuel consumption, your insurance premiums are as low as possible, your excess is minimal and your residuals are all at best book prices. What’s the secret? Please phone us and tell us how it’s done.
“I haven’t decided yet”
A day’s driver training can cost as little as R1000 per driver. Make the decision today!
