HOLIDAYS
Hot springs are not just brilliant examples of geography in action, but soaking up their healing mineral-rich waters can also be gentle therapy for the stressed body and mind. Here are a handful of South Africa’s hottest hot spring holiday resorts and destinations…
RIEMVASMAAK HOT SPRINGS NORTHERN CAPE
www.onroutemag.co.za
This prime attraction in the Northern Cape is the product of volcanic eruptions that occurred centuries ago, with activity deep underground continuing to heat the therapeutic waters of the springs. Two magnificent pools are located in a deep ravine surrounded by 80-metre high granite cliffs. You’ll feel completely isolated in this place of haunting beauty. The dramatic scenery that surrounds it is that of imposing mountains, rugged desert-plains and mile upon mile of wilderness dating back millions of years. Accommodation: Cleverly designed self-catering chalets blend into the rocky surrounds and offer great views. Extras: Other than the hot springs, visitors are drawn to the area’s prolific birdlife, 4x4 trails and scenic hiking trails. This stark desert landscape is also home to the spectacular Augrabies Falls. www.northerncape.org.za/riemvasmaak 6

The water here reaches a temperature of 50˚C at the source, and has been known to cure people suffering from sprains to high blood pressure. WARMWATERBERG SPA WESTERN CAPE Find this unique mineral spring high on the foothills of the Warmwaterberg Mountain, between Barrydale and Ladismith. The main attraction is its location where you can enjoy panoramic views over the Little Karoo, clear from the Langeberg to the Swartberg! Of course, another draw card is the hot water (44°C at the source). A very high iron content makes this water extremely healthy and sweet tasting. Enjoy two hot pools, a cold pool and a number of roman baths, which can fit up to six people, containing 1 000 litres of superior mineral water fresh from the artesian spring. Accommodation: Options range from The Bath House, Main House, timber chalets, caravan rentals, to caravan and campsites. Extras: A spectacular six-kilometre walking trail on the edge of the mountain. Also, because of its isolation the Warmwaterberg Spa is a brilliant spot for stargazing. www.warmwaterbergspa.co.za

What sparked your interest in and passion for photography? My love for and fascination with people.
What is your favourite subject matter and why? People - without a doubt! I find tremendous gratification in capturing people as I see them, especially when I’m able to share the image with them and experience their response to seeing themselves through my lens. I also really enjoy shooting food, it is a creative expression that has its own life and energy, which makes it a fun challenge to shoot.

In your commercial work, who are some of the most interesting/ memorable people you have photographed?
16
One of the aspects of my profession that I most enjoy is the opportunity to interact with a wide array of varied individuals. I work with politicians, high-powered business people, sportsmen and women, musicians, artists, actors, deejays, personalities, comedians, etc. I recently shot the Auditor General Thembekile Kimi Makwetu, Former Politician Geraldine
Shop-assistant in Ponto Malangane Mozambique
Fraser-Moleketi, and Mbuyeseni Ndlozi spokesperson for the EFF, to mention a few. I had the pleasure of shooting a portrait of Michael Campell, for Golfing Digest USA. It’s always fun working with comedians! Tumi Moraka is one of my favourite women on the planet. She’s phenomenally talented and an inspiration to be around. I also recently collaborated with Culoe De Song (local music producer and DJ) and was blown away by him.
“In my photography, colour is my language. I go through stages where my eye is drawn to certain tones. ”
My job constantly presents problems that need split-second solutions. I enjoy having to think on my feet and making a plan on the fly – there’s so much gratification in coming up with a winning solution.

What are some of the most challenging aspects of the work you do?
Can you share some of the secret tricks of the trade? I’m afraid they are the oldest tricks in the book: Never give up and be yourself – both clichés for good reason!
Karoo drive by snap
How do you think you have evolved as a photographer through your own body of work? Each piece and project changes who I am as a person and as a photographer. It’s the perfect career for me exactly for that reason. I live in a state of dynamic flow and for the opportunity to change and transform. In my photography, colour is my language; I go through stages where my eye is drawn to certain tones. I love the post-production process! It’s a journey that never leads to the same place.
Any words of wisdom for the upand-comers?

What have been some of your proudest moments as a photographer? During my eight-year journey into the exploration of photography, one of many proud moments was being recognized internationally, and published in a book called NEON by Hong Kong publisher Viction:ary, who specializes in visual
art and design, connecting visions and inspirations from the East and the West. As a commercial photographer, I have also worked on landmark international campaigns such as Dulux – Colour Prohibition, and Guinness – Made of Black (featuring Nigerian rap superstar Phyno). Also, the stills I shot for the Guinness #MadeOfBlack campaign scooped a gold at the Cannes Advertising Awards earlier this year!
I have worked on huge international commercial sets with unbelievably talented cast and crew. I have contributed to sizeable campaigns for noteworthy publications, and I work with local celebrities and personalities across various platforms. With a background in styling, and a firm grasp of the entire process of stills production from start to finish, it has been a natural progression for me to produce campaigns in their entirety, including set-up, photography and post-production. www.michellewastie.com www.facebook.com/michellewastiephotography

NBA 2K16
BY: @carandgameguru
Basketball is everywhere at the moment. It’s all over DSTV and with the NBA finally having been played on African soil, there is no denying its popularity in this country. As a game, NBA 2K16 continues what a very successful franchise has delivered for at least the last five years. This game had very little to improve on from last year’s edition, so all it really needed to do was stick to what made it successful and not try to be too creative. The franchise and career modes are awesome and getting to play alongside legends like LeBron James adds stacks of allure to this game.
RORY MCILROY GOLF
#
4
EA Sports decided after 14 successful years to part ways with one of the greatest golfers of all time and use Rory McIlroy as their new franchise ambassador. The game has not shifted too much, from what originally made it great, but there is something oddly different about it. It has received mixed reviews in the press of late, but when it comes to a game for golfers, EA Sports have certainly cornered the market. We were hoping for something completely fresh with a new face on the cover and maybe some more golfers or different courses to choose from, but it’s all too familiar. With a new face on the cover, this may’ve been the chance to rethink the entire franchise completely. Then again, if familiar was great in the past, why change? Overall though - a fun and captivating game.

DON BRADMAN CRICKET If you can think back far enough to remember the first few cricket games on PlayStation, then this game will come as a complete shock to you. Over the years, cricket games have only really taken two serious steps: the first was with the original Brian Lara, and the second has now been with Don Bradman Cricket. Every game that came before and after has done nothing to revolutionise the game on a console platform; they have merely updated them. Don Bradman Cricket takes this sport to the next level. It’s extremely challenging, has greater realism and is far more rewarding to the cricket purest.

Like basketball, Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) is one of the fastest growing sports in Africa and the world. In South Africa, we have Extreme Fighting Championships (EFC) and globally we have Ultimate Fighting Championships (UFC). For those of you not familiar with MMA, it’s a mix of various fighting styles, which is fought in an octagonal cage. The game offers you an opportunity to build, train and develop yourself into a UFC champion. The game uses EA Sports’ famous and nearly flawless Ignite game engine, which gives players a very realistic gaming experience. The coolest game feature happens when players beat career mode on pro difficulty or better, you will then unlock Bruce Lee and can test his skills against the best of the best in the UFC.

FIFA 16
Year after year, the FIFA franchise continues to dominate the football gaming space. There is certainly some competition coming from Pro Evolution Soccer, but FIFA’s global sales alone (in the region of $4 billion – R52 billion) is testament to how great the game is. In theory, gamers have been paying a fortune every year for pretty much the same game. There haven’t been any major developments in the franchise for the last three or four versions, but the FIFA developers’ formula is most certainly ‘perfection rather than production’. We do wish that they would have their squads a little more up-todate when they release the new versions rather than forcing us to download current squads, but other than that FIFA is a fabulous sport offering.

THE GARAGE [C AR RE VI E W ]
HERE’S THE
DIFFERENCE! By Damian Murphy
When you ask the average guy on the street if they know the difference between an SUV and a CUV, most don’t. onRoute cuts through the grey line with an explanation and review of each.
THE ALL-NEW VOLVO XC90 (SUV)
www.onroutemag.co.za
I
28
t has been a very long wait for the new XC90 to arrive. We were given a chance to put this SUV through its paces and did so along the mountain passes of Franschhoek in the Western Cape. This large car can comfortably seat seven passengers. Volvo has done well over the last decade or so, by completely moving away from boring designs and producing some of the sexiest cars available on the market at the moment. Besides striking good looks, the XC90 is a nimble mover that handles very well, especially around tight and tricky corners despite its size. The interior is designed with the finest leather finishings and offers all the comforts you would expect from a luxury SUV. Volvo’s Vision 2020 is their desire to ensure that no person is killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo by the year 2020. As bold a statement as that is, when you see the safety features that the new XC90 has, you can’t help but buy into their vision too. Two of those features are the ‘auto-brake at intersection’ capability and another FACT BOX: special safety feature that prevents the XC90 from ever running off Price: R900 000 + the road. The auto-brake feature Top Speed: 205 km/h essentially takes over braking duties Power: 165 kW at intersections. The run-off-road Torque: 470 N m feature includes driver alerts, and Emissions: 156 g/km braking and steering assistance Fuel Tested: Diesel for the driver should the cameras Fuel Cons.: 5.8 l/100 km detect that the car is moving off the road by mistake.
B
esides an incredibly unusual name (pronounced cash kai), there is absolutely nothing unusual about this CUV. The Qashqai was a top ten finalist in the 2015 SAGMJ Car of the Year awards, and is a great starter car for any family. The diesel version we tested had a powerful engine that gives the driver a great amount of day-to-day driving enjoyment. The CVT gearbox received a lot of stick from the motoring community at large, but we weren’t unimpressed with the transmission. Compared to its competition, the gearbox does miss a beat or two, but in the grand scheme of things, it got the job done. The Qashqai is bigger on the inside than the exterior lets on, and the compact size of the car does not take away from the comfort and space of the passengers.
FACT BOX: Price: R287 500 + Top Speed: 183 km/h Power: 96 kW Torque: 320 N m Emissions: 122 g/km Fuel Tested: Diesel Fuel Cons.: 4.4 l/100 km

THE NISSAN QASHQAI (CUV)
Nissan are the proud producers of some of the best off-road vehicles in the world and we were sad to see that the Qashqai didn’t deliver on that front, but CUVs in general are really only meant to serve the purpose of extra-large cars, rather than recreational city vehicles. The Qashqai did have intelligent park assist, lane departure warnings and the NissanConnect smartphone integration, making it a very complete family package.
B
efore the SUV and CUV, anyone with a large family had a station wagon. They were generally box shaped cars with an extra-long and high boot. However, even with the uptrend in SUVs and CUVs, there is a growing demand for great station wagons.
THE SUBARU OUTBACK (STATION WAGON)
One of the most desirable models on the market is the Subaru Outback. This large family car is both nippy on the city streets and very capable on an adventure. Subaru have one of the best all-wheel drive systems in the world – most, if not all of their cars can comfortably take to the dirt. In many cases it’s not recommended that you push their ‘family range’ to the limits, but the Symmetrical All Wheel Drive system will certainly not leave you stranded should you need to venture off the beaten path. For a car of its size, we were hugely impressed with the fuel economy. We took the Outback on a road trip from Johannesburg to Cape Town and back again and it delivered in every department. It’s comfortable, smooth, reliable and efficient. In addition, in a world where the fuel price is rocketing, it’s nice to see manufacturers delivering great products without compromising on performance.

A CELEBRATION OF ART AND NATURE
40
Earlier this year the first Matheran Green Festival took place within the hilltop forests of an old railroad station, 80 kilometres southeast of Mumbai. Over the course of a week, 200 local and international artists, musicians, filmmakers, photographers, poets, t’ai chi masters, and people with all kinds of unique skills came together and volunteered their time in an effort to bring awareness to the increasingly unsustainable human impact on our environment and its precious ecosystems. Megan King was there!
Two young girls look up at the origami installation in lights.
It’s a sweaty summer’s evening at Mumbai’s airport. I’m struck at the Arrivals passage filled with artefacts and tributes to national culture, resembling more of a museum than an airport. The usual advertisements from investment and insurance companies are absent. Already there is so much more for the imagination to play with, so much more intrigue than those usual images of impossibly handsome people wearing diamonds and tuxedos, drinking triple distilled whiskey on a yacht somewhere no one you know has ever been. A car awaits my arrival at the airport pickup. In a climate of chaos and extreme urban density, patience is essential. Being on the roads of Mumbai is like edging through a minefield where cars, buses, motorcycles, rickshaws and pedestrians battle it out. There are no obvious rules to the untrained eye, only the suggestion of an unspoken collaboration between people. I’m on my way to Matheran, a tiny hill station just outside Mumbai. Within the tall forests a festival is waiting...
The Innocence of Matheran It’s late at night when we safely reach Matheran. We stop at the base of the railroad station as no cars are allowed to enter the ecosensitive site. The air is thick with summer’s humidity, offset by the fresh oxygen provided by thousands of trees. We pass the surreal scene of horses grazing amid the forest, the moonlight piercing through the branches and illuminating their beautiful coats. Sukant and his team had arrived in Matheran nearly two months earlier, where a clean-up of gigantic proportions took place. He tells
me that a thick layer of trash covered the forest floor, and that most of the litter arrived on the ground via the tourists who visit Matheran from the nearby cities. High in the mountains, the forests are a popular holiday destination for Indian families seeking respite from the big city and the sweltering summer heat. Sukant is an award-winning art director and production designer in Bollywood. His reputation for making things happen and his unique perspective on things make him one of the most sought after in the industry – an artist, social activist and dreamer. The Matheran Green Festival is the manifestation of his vision that started to take shape more than five years ago. “I was drawn to the innocence of Matheran.” He fell in love with the way people still talked to each other and the simplicity of their lives. He had found a little piece of earth that was still relatively run by nature, although things are beginning to change quickly. “Whatever transformation happened in Mumbai, or any other metropolis 50 or 100 years ago, Matheran is on the verge of that same development. They’re starting to tar the roads, big business people have bought land to develop into large hotels and some people are pro putting vehicles on the roads.” The local villagers rely solely on tourism for their livelihood. They sell shoes, small trinkets and snow cones, carry luggage between hotels and set up games in the street. The red-earth roadsides look like a regular 60s funfair, with everything from shooting water balloons with darts to playing dice. Whatever tiny gap of opportunity exists, the community finds a way to be resourceful and summer is a vital time for them to earn a living. An ambulance is the only vehicle allowed in the town, making horseback and hand-pulled rickshaws the usual mode of transport, providing a main stream of revenue for hundreds of drivers and horsemen.

Getting in Sync with Nature According to Sukant, “If people here can be proud of who they are without wanting to change things and compete with city lifestyles, Matheran can be spared the same fate and be kept as an example for future generations that we can still live in sync with nature.” To represent this, Sukant makes art that tries to incorporate the deepness of humanity, and the preciousness of life on earth through whatever medium he’s drawn to. For Matheran Green, his team created larger than life installations of dragons and bulls, and a Pegasus made from trash and other lost and broken treasure. By virtue of the universe, he met a French traveller and after the pair had exchanged dreams, they got to building a magnificent wooden geodesic dome that would become the centre stage of the festival. However, it’s about so much more than just the artworks at the festival, as participants create a testing ground for new ideas and altruistic ideals, a space to connect through art, music and nature. Skills development workshops were set up with women and young girls from the village, with plans to develop a formal curriculum between participants and the community. “The whole cycle of life is like a moving train, and we’re a little bit off the tracks,” says Sukant. “The first way to get back on track is to slow down and make people think. I used to be impatient and feel so frustrated thinking nobody cared, that nobody was listening. Now I believe in working slowly to change things.”
Voluntourism
www.onroutemag.co.za
Initiatives that combine travel, art and the natural environment are becoming increasingly popular amongst travellers. They are part of an emerging ‘experience economy’ in which young people are not so eagerly running towards job security and pre-planned lives and are willing, for now at least, to trade things for real experiences. Grounded in practical education, human connection and awareness of the planet, it becomes easier knowing that there is a community of people seeking similar alternatives around the world.

“Initiatives that combine travel, art and the natural environment are becoming increasingly popular amongst travellers.”
Take Greenpop, a Cape Town based tree-planting enterprise that migrates their entire organization to Zambia each year to set up an eco-village from scratch. During June and July, the ‘Zambia Festival of Action’ gathers hundreds of people from all walks of life to participate in workshops on environmental and waste education, planting thousands of trees and invites anybody with a creative streak to contribute to the atmosphere of the camp. The festival has just moved into its fourth year, having planted more than 11 000 trees in the area since it started in 2012. It’s another space where people are given the opportunity to show up, to participate, to heal and to learn. People from around the world are becoming more attracted to a kind of voluntourism that combines hands-on hard work with music concerts and upcycled art making, as an authentic experience for people to learn something about themselves and a space for connection and creation among strangers. According to Sukant, the man that started it all in Matheran, “We are all different but when we sit together, eat together and work together for a common purpose we forget about all that.” For more information about the festival visit www.matherangreenfestival.com and their Facebook page www.facebook.com/matherangreenfestival2015. “T
he biggest impact in people’s decision to travel is word-of-mouth followed by the web,” says Mariëtte du Toit-Helmbold, CEO of Destinate, a tourism-marketing agency. “Blogging catches both elements.” Du Toit-Helmbold cites research from the latest Travel Trends Report at ITB Berlin (the world’s largest tourism convention): 92% of social media users are influenced by travel blogs, with up to 72% willing to change their destination choice based on the opinion of friends and networks on social media. “Travel bloggers are changing the media landscape,” says Keith Jenkins, CEO of travel blogger network iambassador and a creator of the Velvet Escape travel blog. “They offer immediate and longer term benefits.”
Jenkins explains that bloggers can create buzz before, during, and after a trip, tying together their content with the same hashtag. In addition, because online content is searchable, has a longer shelf life, and incorporates social media interaction, travel blogs can rank high on Google. “It’s not like publishing a magazine article and hoping people read it,” Du Toit-Helmbold says. “On the web, you have content and stories from a variety of perspectives talking to a variety of audiences over an extended period. As a destination, we can use that content through our channels.” Du Toit-Helmbold explains that the goal is to have bloggers create content that inspires people to explore destinations in
Images courtesy of Shutterstock
RISE OF THE TRAVEL BLOGGER As the power of the web continues to grow, tourism boards and destination marketers are looking for new ways to collaborate with travel bloggers and online influencers. Eugene Yiga finds out how travel bloggers are transforming the tourism industry and the media landscape.
Another campaign that uses unique experiences to change perceptions about a destination is “#LoveCapeTown”. The goal is to reposition the city as a place one can visit all year round – for history, culture, art, and so on – instead of just in the summer for sun and sea. “We are not best placed to tell Cape Town’s stories,” says Velma Corcoran, Executive Marketing Manager for Cape Town Tourism. “As much as we would love to, there’s
inauthenticity because people know it’s our job. So bloggers being able to tell the story – whatever the story is – in a credible and authentic way carries more weight.” Over time, many destination marketers have learned that the way bloggers like to experience a destination is quite different from a group of journalists on a press trip. More specifically, travel bloggers don’t enjoy rigid itineraries that involve too much activity. Giving them extra time and flexibility works well. As a result, Corcoran’s goal is to work with bloggers slower and longer so that they have room to explore and do what they do best. It’s about giving them guidelines and structure, connecting them with key locals,
and “letting them loose” to experience the extraordinary and (sometimes) unexpected. “Understand what the blogger’s interests are and match that with unique, alternative experiences,” says Du Toit-Helmbold. “We always keep a few surprises up our sleeves because that makes for interesting reading.” However, how does a tourism board or destination marketer pick a blogger? Du ToitHelmbold suggests finding those that speak to a wide audience and matching that audience with the market, the destination or product wants to reach. “We have to understand the audience,” she says. “When we select bloggers, we make sure they have a wide reach, they are multi-

a way that’s different to what a guidebook might say. For example, one of Destinate’s current campaigns is the “Stellenblog”, where top international bloggers connected with interesting locals and shared stories of Stellenbosch, beyond good food and wine.

channelled, and that there’s high engagement. We’ve got to make sure the content works for an extended period. We also have to contract and agree on payment – if there is payment applicable – and then manage that process very carefully,” she says. “This makes it clear what the expectations are.” While it’s good to approach digital marketing campaigns in a professional way, bringing formality to the agreement also brings up a tricky issue. How much is a blogger worth? And, how much should they be paid? “It’s a contentious discussion when you discuss how much value an impression brings,” says Michael Bean, Managing Director of BrandsEye, an online monitoring and insights tool that tracks online conversations. “But it’s quite an important thing for advertisers and marketers to understand.”
“Research shows 92% of social media users are influenced by travel blogs, with up to 72% willing to change their destination choice based on the opinion of friends and networks on social media.” Not all online influencers will supply content for free because they love what they do. Nor should they have to. Earning an income and doing work you enjoy can go hand in hand. Yet many bloggers are underselling themselves. “I hate to say this but bloggers are cheap,” says Jenkins, pointing out that the top 50 bloggers have a reach of more than 10 million people while a one-page advert in a high profile international travel magazine (with a circulation of around 800 000) is close to $150 000 (R1,950 000). “The reach they have is undervalued.” Some question whether bloggers can remain objective if they’re receiving free trips and/or getting paid. That’s why the only way to maintain trust with the audience is if the tourism board or destination marketer doesn’t expect specific coverage. “You cannot tell people what to write,” says Corcoran. “Any blogger worth their salt isn’t going to write anything because then they put at risk their credibility with their audience, which is ultimately the thing they have to trade on.” Jenkins agrees. “The influence of the destination on what the blogger would write about ends with the creation of the itinerary,” he says. “It’s up to the blogger to blog about whatever interests them and fits their blog.”
www.onroutemag.co.za
Still, whatever content comes out of the process is something tourism boards and destination marketers need to work with. “Yes, the blogger will publish and share that content on social media, but you can’t just sit back and see it happen,” says Du Toit-Helmbold. “You have to make sure it works for you. It’s an investment. You have to make sure that investment sweats.”

HEARTS AND HEROES
MAKING WAVES IN CONSERVATION Hanli Prinsloo, an iconic South African freediver and creator of the I AM WATER Trust, travelled to Cocos Island as part of an international expedition and high profile documentary film project to raise awareness about the plight of the sharks in our oceans. Eugene Yiga caught up with her to find out more.
Could you tell us more about yourself? My path to the sea was a roundabout one. I grew up on a horse farm outside Pretoria, studied acting and filmmaking in Sweden, and came back to South Africa to focus all my energy on ocean conservation.
www.onroutemag.co.za
What does I AM WATER do?
54
At I AM WATER, we believe in ocean conservation through human experience. Our projects focus on getting youth and children who have never had the chance to swim or snorkel in the ocean. I measure privilege by a child’s access to water: from clean drinking water to learning to swim and experiencing the world below the blue surface.
How was your trip to Cocos Island?
Peter Marshall and I were invited to join Dr Sylvia Earle and Mission Blue on this incredible expedition to highlight the marine life, and especially the sharks, of Cocos Island. We were joined on the boat by Adrian Grenier (Entourage actor, activist and currently working on his ‘Lonely Whale’ project), Ocean Ramsey (‘One Ocean Diving’, freediver and ‘Water Inspired’ shark researcher), and Julie Andersen (founder of ‘Shark Angels’). As well as, Stephanie Ruhle (the face of Market Movers on Bloomberg TV), Professor Jorge Cortes (our intrepid storyteller from Fusion Network), and Nicolas Ibarguen (coral reef expert and author). The full documentary aired on Fusion TV in the USA on World Oceans Day, online it is still available here: http://fusion.net/story/146300/why-a-tinyisland-off-the-coast-of-costa-rica-is-a-unescoworld-heritage-site/
Since the trip, the Cocos Team have continued rallying support for the Pacific and her sharks. Currently Hanli and Peter are back in the Pacific, this time in Ecuador to work with the kids of the local fishermen to ensure they protect their ocean heritage. For more about Hanli and Peter’s time in Ecuador, see: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/i-amwater-project-ecuador Five magnificent days of diving saw us meeting the enigmatic hammerhead sharks, an elusive tiger shark, juvenile whitetip reef sharks, huge schools of jack fish, and electric bait balls alive with sharks, dolphins, and booby birds. On the DeepSee submersible, we saw the largest ragged-tooth shark I had ever seen. The next day, freediving through 25-metre deep and more than 30-metre long tunnels with raging current, we were met by eaglerays on the way up.

“I AM WATER is dedicated to ocean conservation through human experience, teaching underprivileged kids and youth to swim and snorkel, and getting them to experience and love our beautiful oceans.” Could you tell us more about your work with sharks?
What is being done to save the sharks?
I love teaching people about freediving and giving them the opportunity to encounter sharks; it’s an immediate understanding that we aren’t on the menu. My passion is telling stories that touch hearts and change minds. If there’s a creature out there that needs to touch hearts and change minds, it’s the shark!
There are many great organisations working with shark conservation, research and awareness, from big organisations such as WWF to small enigmatic ones such as Shark Angels and Water Inspired. In South Africa, we have the Shark Spotters in Cape Town who offer a groundbreaking alternative to shark nets like those that we have in Durban.
What is your ultimate goal for yourself?
What is your ultimate goal for the foundation?
Hanli believes that education is the key! She encourages you to help share knowledge about sharks, their behaviour, and vulnerability. To stay in touch with I AM WATER and their projects, they often do outreach work in South Africa, go to www.iamwaterfoundation.org
The diversity! There are so many different kinds of sharks, with as many different kinds of personalities. It’s almost like different kinds of dogs being unique. I sometimes play this game where I compare sharks to dogs. It’s a language many people understand better than philosophical descriptions about the natures of specific shark species.
I AM WATER is dedicated to ocean conservation through human experience, teaching underprivileged kids and youth to swim and snorkel, and getting them to experience and love our beautiful oceans. We have projects in South Africa, Mozambique,
My goals and those of I AM WATER have become interwoven. However, I want to stay motivated and happy in my work, find a balance between work and play, and spend as much time in the ocean I can!

DRAGON DUNE:
THE ULTIMATE RIDE!
Experience the biggest sandboarding dune in South Africa! This insane 300-metre dune, dubbed Dragon Dune, is a world famous long and fast ride with spectacular views. Where exactly is Dragon Dune located?
www.onroutemag.co.za
Dragon Dune is situated on private land a short 15 minute drive outside of Mossel Bay at a place called Vleesbaai. You can join an organized tour with Billeon to sandboard this magnificent beast and enjoy spectacular views over the ocean with regular sightings of dolphins and whales.
56
What makes this particular experience a unique adventure? Although it’s the biggest dune in South Africa, the focus is on having fun! If you don’t feel confident enough to stand up on your board, you can also sit down or enjoy a belly ride. Although Billeon’s motto is ‘the less you know, the best’, you’ll be well prepared with a qualified introduction on how to sit, lie or stand on your board. The Dragon
experience is a once in a lifetime opportunity and always manages to exceed all expectations.
How long does a trip take and what should you bring with you? The duration of the trip is three hours and bookings must be made a day in advance. Bring closed shoes, sunscreen, a camera and drinks. The tour operators usually focus on morning sessions but afternoon trips can be arranged.
Can anyone do it? Yes, Billeon caters for all age groups with the right equipment to suit each client according to their ability. Groups of up to 150 people have been accommodated in one session; even clients in their 70s have joined tours!
“…rip down the sandy spine of Dragon Dune.”
What precautions does Billeon take to ensure client safety?
What is the difference between sand and snowboarding? We’ve had many overseas snowboarding clients who’ve joined the group to rip down the sandy spine of Dragon Dune. Although it looks similar, sandboarding is quite different in terms of skills required. Even experienced snowboarders need to learn some techniques before attempting the Dragon.
Images courtesy of Billeon
Billeon has more than 10 years’ experience in sandboarding the Dragon with no fatal accidents, which we hope to keep that way. Our well-organized programme ensures that experienced instructors minimize the risk of accidents.
Does Billeon provide the equipment needed? All gear is provided for clients – including boards and helmets. To suit our experienced overseas clientele, we only use imported gear to maximize performance when needed.
What speeds can be reached on the dune?
Even experienced snowboarders need to learn some techniques before attempting the Dragon.
Bellyboard rides on the Dragon are safe and fun speeds can easily be managed. For more advanced boarders, super fun adrenalinpumping maximum speeds of 90 kilometres have been reached.
What sets this adventure apart? Dragon Dune is 170 metres high and provides rides of up to 350 metres long, which overwhelms all competition in South Africa! Perfectly sloped for this activity, it’s the only dune in South Africa to compare with our world famous neighbourly Namibian dunes. It’s privately owned which means the general public don’t have access to it. The property is also well maintained and litter-free, so riders are able to reach maximum speeds on smooth slopes where footprints don’t exist. We also accommodate very large groups, and of course, the amazing landscapes make this sandboarding adventure a must! www.billeon.com or call 0829711405 for bookings

As consumers struggle with high food prices, electricity costs and other household living expenses, finding ways to reduce the running costs of you motor vehicle can go a long way in relieving financial strain.

HEALTH & SAFETY REDUCE THE RUNNING COST OF YOUR CAR
According to Nicholas Nkosi, Head of Vehicle and Asset Finance – Retail Banking at Standard Bank – two factors currently make-up the bulk of total vehicle ownership costs: fuel and keeping the car on the road! When these two costs are added up, they can easily match or even exceed a new vehicle’s monthly instalment payments. Mr Nkosi suggests that consumers follow these simple tips to manage their car running costs:
MAINTENANCE
FUEL
INSURANCE
“While there is little that consumers can do about the rising price of fuel, there are a few tips that can help them to make their fuel tanks go the extra mile,” says Jill Koopman, Brand and C-Store Alliance Manager at Caltex South Africa. • Try to avoid driving during peak hours. The constant starting, stopping and idling hurts fuel economy. • Join a lift club. Travelling with friends or family that work close by can save you money. • Opting for a smaller fuel-efficient car can make a big difference, if you can’t avoid driving during peak hours. • Turning off the air conditioner when it’s not hot can also decrease your fuel bill.
www.onroutemag.co.za
• Avoid quick acceleration when you take-off. Doing this can help you to improve fuel economy.
58
• Slow down. Decreasing your highway driving speeds can significantly reduce fuel consumption. • Empty your boot. All that extra weight requires extra power and extra fuel from your engine. • Ensuring that your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure can help to maintain fuel economy.
Servicing your car regularly, according to the manufacturer’s specifications, helps to avoid unexpected repair costs. Also, make sure that your tyres are in good condition. While getting new tyres is often viewed as a grudge purchase, tyres are very important for your safety and ensure the roadworthiness of your vehicle.
Understanding your insurance policy will go a long way to helping manage your car’s running costs. If you aren’t properly insured and become involved in an accident, you could end up with a huge financial burden. Also, make sure that the policy includes roadside assistance and car hire as these can be costly if you have to pay for them out of your pocket. At the same time, you should only get the cover that you need and avoid additional extras you can do without.
CAR INSTALMENT REPAYMENTS – OPTING FOR A FIXED RATE
Fixing your instalment rate guarantees that you will pay the same amount for the duration of your contract. Mr Nkosi says this option can be quite useful in helping to manage your car’s running costs given that the economy is volatile and interest rates could increase unexpectedly. “While this option may be a bit more expensive, at least it gives you peace of mind by eliminating the risk of your car instalment payments increasing unexpectedly,” Mr Nkosi adds. Lastly, try to save for ad hoc costs such as annual license fees and e-tolls. These costs can make a huge dent in your monthly budget if you aren’t well prepared for them. www.arrivealive.co.za
ROAD SAFETY REACHES 650 SCHOOLS IMPERIAL Road Safety reached its 650th school through its Scholar Patrol Improvement Project. As they celebrate this achievement, they also remain focused on increasing their footprint even further and bringing real road safety change to South African children. The project, established in October 2012, began with the goal of reaching 20 schools a month. Expectations have definitely been exceeded!
HERE ARE THE FACTS: • • • •
Taught 561 000 learners Trained 2 600 teachers Painted 16.5 kilometres of zebra crossings Erected 1 300 stop signs and 1 300 ‘Scholar patrol ahead’ signs • Handed over 3 900 bibs Road Safety campaigns, like the Scholar Patrol Improvement Project, are a welcomed addition to our roads and while they may seem small, they can still effect a positive change in behaviour.

ast year Bakwena partnered with the Endangered Wildlife Trust (EWT) to conduct research to determine the extent of human-wildlife conflict along its routes. The Bakwena N1/N4 toll concession is excited to announce a further partnership with EWT to roll-out two additional projects, the Conservation Education Project and the monitoring of roadkill of wildlife in the area as a means to safeguard the natural heritage in the areas around the N1 and N4 routes. Training and workshops will be conducted to provide community members with environmental education aimed at reducing the incidences of snaring and hunting with dogs, as well as raising awareness of the negative impacts that problem animals have on the local communities. Bakwena will also continue to work with the EWT on the EcoSchools Project, providing a platform that enables teachers, learners, community members and partner organisations to undertake environmental management projects such as electricity, water conservation, and education on food garden development.
