JRA sets out to rehabilitate, expand and build new bridges

The Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has undertaken a programme to rehabilitate, expand and build new bridges. Throughout the City of Johannesburg, 950 bridges have been inspected in a visual and detailed manner at the cost of R5 million in the 2014/15 financial year. For the 2015/16 financial year, R20 million has been allocated for further visual and detailed principal inspections. Bridge inspections enable the JRA to detect defects and take informed action in the form of bridge rehabilitation, expansion and the construction of new bridges. The construction of Naledi Bridge, which links the communities of Naledi and Protea in Soweto at the cost of R30 million, is in progress. Additionally, the bridge rehabilitation project has targeted Coleraine Drive Bridge, Nelson Mandela Bridge, Queen Elizabeth Bridge, Booysens Bridge, M1 Double Decker, Federation Bridge and Oxford Bridge. Coleraine Drive Bridge was completed and the bridge has since been open to traffic. The JRA has also given the Nelson Mandela Bridge a facelift by replacing broken glass panels. The humidifiers have been installed on the bridge.

On Booysens Bridge the contractor is exposing services needed by locating leaks in the water pipe for Johannesburg Water for repairs, while on Queen Elizabeth Bridge the contractor has cast a replacement panel. The budget split between the construction on Nelson Mandela Bridge and Booysens is R3 million for the 2014/15 financial year, R23 million for the 2015/16 financial year and R3 million for the 2016/17 financial year. Equally, the scope of work at Federation Bridge includes the demolition, refurbishment and replacement of guardrails. Oxford Bridge is set to have its retaining walls stabilized by using anchors. Joints will be replaced on both abutments of Oxford Bridge and durability treatment of the deck abutments and retaining walls will be carried out. Overall, the M1 Double Decker will be revamped through the replacement of missing steel bridge parapet rails with precast concrete rails, repair of damaged reinforced concrete, cleaning of concrete surfaces, application of protective coatings to concrete surfaces, rehabilitation of bridge joints and milling off and replacing existing bridge deck surfacing. The current estimated cost for the rehabilitation project on Oxford, Federation and the M1 Double Decker is R200 million. As part of the Le Roux Avenue Widening Project, Le Roux Avenue Bridge is scheduled for expansion. The total budget allocation for the project is R28 million. Conrad Drive Bridge, Jabulani/Molapo Bridge, Nxumalo Bridge, Kinini-Leselinyana, Zulu, Mzilikazi, Kaalfontein, Klipspruit West, Slovo Park and Diepsloot West are pedestrian bridges that have been earmarked for bridge overtopping and work on many of these bridges is nearing completion. The overall budget for the citywide bridge overtopping project is R120 million over the 2014/15 (R30 million), 2015/16 (R50 million) and 2016/17 (R40 million) financial years.

JRA Acting Managing Director Mpho Kau said the current and future construction, rehabilitation and widening projects cement the JRA’s place among the best city roads authorities. “As an agency responsible for the City of Johannesburg’s road assets, the bridges project and its budget give concrete expression to our commitment to make mobility easy and safe for our communities. We appeal to members of the community to protect and preserve the quality of our roads infrastructure by using it responsibly and reporting vandals to law enforcement agencies such as the SAPS and JMPD or contacting us on 0860 562 874, hotline@jra.org.za or on our vibrant social media platforms,” said JRA Acting Managing Director Mpho Kau.

INSIDE SOME OF SOUTH AFRICA’S

AIRBNB HOMES

From its 2008 beginning in San Francisco, Airbnb has now spread to more than 35 000 cities in 192 countries around the world. Eugene Yiga spoke to three of South Africa’s highest rated hosts to learn what it’s like to open up your home to strangers.

GUY AND TANYA SPILLER, JOHANNESBURG When filmmaker Guy Spiller had a few projects cancelled and needed to find another income stream, he turned to Airbnb. “My wife, Tanya’s 91-year-old father, had mentioned Airbnb when we visited him in the Drakensberg at Christmas, so I looked it up online,” he recalls. “We had a few vacant rooms in the house as some of our children had left home in the last few years, so it was easy to start.” Since joining in March 2015, Airbnb has worked well for the Johannesburg couple. Besides making some money, they’ve met some amazing people.

www.onroutemag.co.za

“The most unusual guest was Mark,” Guy recalls. “He was on a world tour and spending a week in 52 different cities! He makes a video blog of his travels and his hosts. He filmed me showing a client a video I had made, us playing tennis, him getting a violin lesson from Tanya, and a family celebration.”

6

One challenge for Guy and Tanya, who host an average of four to five people each month, is matching guests with particular attractions that they would appreciate. It’s also tricky to find a balance between excitement and safety. Still, the two find it amazing that, despite all the different people from all the different places, they seem to share similar core values. “We love meeting interesting people from all over the world in a relaxed atmosphere,” Guy says. “It has given us a fresh focus on Johannesburg and what it has to offer, as we continually see the city from our guests’ point of view.” To view this home: www.airbnb.com/rooms/5321398

After being told their place was “too nice” to let people sleep on their couch for free, Mark and Liz Beard joined Airbnb in December 2012. “Since we support previously disadvantaged kids with their education costs, a Canadian guest suggested that we look at Airbnb so we could charge for our accommodation and use the funds for charity,” recalls Mark. “We did and have never looked back.” Not only does this give the couple the chance to do what they love by sharing their space, but the experience also lets them learn from the people they host. In return, they are uplifting the most deserving and needy of children from the proceeds. Some of the charities include Newkidz (www.newkidz.org.za), Epilepsy SA South Cape Knysna Branch (www.epilepsy.org.za/scape), and Youth for Christ (www.yfc.org.za/knysna). “We love learning and exchanging experiences and culture with our guests, who we hope will always leave as friends,” Mark says. “Airbnb has introduced us to some of the most considerate, kind, and honest people we have met in our entire lives. We can only offer our deepest gratitude to our many guests.”

THE RISE OF There are more than 1.5 million homes available through Airbnb worldwide and more than 45 million people have travelled with the service globally. Some notable statistics reflecting Airbnb’s growth in South Africa over the last 12 months: • South Africa is currently the largest market for Airbnb in Africa with 9 400 homes listed, an increase of 138%. • South Africa is becoming an increasingly popular global destination, with the number of people staying in places booked through Airbnb in South Africa increasing by a staggering 257%. • South Africans are embracing the service as well, with those using Airbnb to travel increasing by 163%. • While most South Africans that have used Airbnb have travelled within the country, the most popular international destinations include the US, Italy, France, and the UK.

To keep up with the demand of hosting about 200 people a year in their two listed apartments, Mark and Liz hired another housekeeper and gardener. They also go out of their way to stock their self-catering flat with food so that guests don’t have to bring any when they first arrive. “We are so grateful for the opportunity that we have assisted our friends with unique spaces to set up an Airbnb,” Mark says. “We have also derived great satisfaction from watching them enjoy the income and experiences that Airbnb offers.” To view this home: www.airbnb.com/rooms/774674

VOURN SMALL, CAPE TOWN For fifteen years, Vourn Small of Green Point in Cape Town ran a successful coffee shop. She was busy seven days a week and loved being a confidante for her regular customers. “I became more than a coffee shop owner,” she says. “I had to be a marriage counsellor, a psychologist, a financial advisor, a shoulder to cry on, a good friend, and a lot more.” Modern sitting area with fireplace

HOW TO BE A WINNING HOST! “Provide complimentary snacks and drinks on arrival. It’s not a lot of money to invest in creating a great stay and a happy guest. Also, spend some money on décor and keep your place spotlessly clean.” ~ Mark and Liz Beard “Just be who you are. It would be a pain to become all formal and business-like with guests. After all, Airbnb is often more about meeting people than providing a bed.” ~ Guy and Tanya Spiller

“One of the strangest visits without a doubt was a beautiful lady who arrived with a large hire car packed from trunk to front,” Vourn recalls. “She told us she had been married to a Sultan and that she was accustomed to having 24 handservants. Which was quite believable when we found ourselves peeling a banana for her to eat and emptying the bath after she bathed in milk!” This fascinating guest had the most amazing stories to tell. And there have been many more fascinating stories from the people Vourn has hosted: doctors, nurses, professors, teachers, bankers, lawyers, pilots, models, authors, journalists, hippies, and some others she might be leaving out. “It’s been the most amazing experience,” she says. “I’ve met the most incredible people and now have friends in more than 30 countries around the world. The best is that they are they are mostly here on holiday. So instead of listening to people’s problems, I share their happiest moments.” To view this home: www.airbnb.com/rooms/3268957

“Because many have been given loads of information before they arrive, don’t impose your ideas on things to do. It’s their adventure. And if they need your help as a guide, they will ask.” ~ Vourn Small

However, when she retired, she missed the contact with other people. And so, finding her life feeling a little empty, she decided to join Airbnb in June 2014. The number of guests varies with the season (and peaks from November to April) but she now hosts about 150 people a year.

A HORSEBACK ADVENTURE OF A LIFETIME THE ANYSBERG OVERNIGHT HORSE TRAIL For some of the most striking scenery in the Karoo, this Reserve offers visitors a sun-soaked landscape that alternates between gentle undulating plains and rugged mountains. There’s no better way to explore this truly unspoilt wilderness than on horseback. Accompanied by a guide, the Anysberg two-day horse trail takes riders on a 21-kilometre circular route. Day one comprises of 13 kilometres (approximately five hours) and eight kilometres on day two (approximately four hours). Your guide will teach you the basics of getting comfortably saddled-up before beginning your journey. And, as you slowly adjust to the quiet of Nature’s rhythm, your guide will point out all the fascinating animal and birdlife along the way. Plus it’s an area also known as The Garden of Eden for succulents. You will also get to see the many archaeological sites that Anysberg Nature Reserve is well known for, with ruins dating back to the 18th century and 20 000-year-old San rock art! Because Anysberg is one of the darkest places on Earth, far away from the lights of civilisation, the trail offers an enormous crystal clear night sky with more stars than you could ever imagine! And, as you travel, you will be treated to a full astronomical experience with planet markers placed proportionately to reflect the distances between the planets. For a better understanding of the vast night sky, your guide is also trained in the use of telescopes and will help you get a closer look. A rustic overnight stay in a kloof on the reserve, in a cabin called Tapfontein, offers the perfect place to relax in the boma around a traditional campfire and gaze up at seemingly endless star-studded skies. Don’t forget to make a wish!

WALKS IN THE

EXPERIENCE THE AFRICAN BUSH ON FOOT SWENI WALKING TRAIL

The area is unique, the river attracts a high density of both predator and prey, and a trail experience offers the opportunity to observe these relationships intimately. The Sweni River also accounts for frequent sightings of amazing birdlife, and the flat remoteness of the area offers excellent star gazing opportunities too! The walk itself is relaxed and led by an experienced, armed game ranger who shares intimate knowledge of the bushveld and wildlife, while looking after your safety. Simple well-cooked meals are prepared by a cook on-site. A covered lapa at the camp provides game-viewing pleasure throughout the day as well as a great spot to enjoy traditional sundowners in the evening. Don’t let the deep vibrating roars of the area’s famous Sweni Lion Pride keep you up at night, as you’ll need to rest up for day two. You’ll soon find that being on foot envelops you in your surrounding environment, as opposed to feeling removed from it at the back of a vehicle. For lovers of nature and wildlife – this one’s a must!

Driving around in an open game drive vehicle and staying in a luxury lodge is not really the real safari deal. So, far from the normal ‘spot the big five’ hub of tourist activity, The Kruger National Park offers more adventurous tourists an experience that very few people ever get to have. Those lucky enough to have done both say that driving is a visual experience while walking is a sensual one. Of the seven wilderness trails currently on offer, the least challenging is the Sweni Trail, taking you on a two-day walk along the open, flat savannas of central Kruger.

A three-night, two-day trail that takes a maximum of eight people. DIFFICULTY RATING:

Easy to moderate. WHAT TO BRING:

Comfortable clothing (neutral colours are preferable), a hat and all-weather jacket. Footwear should be worn in prior to the trail, have thick soles and provide good ankle support. Cameras, binoculars, insect repellent, and sunscreen. A good quality torch is essential. Trailists must bring their own liquor and soft drinks. Water, coffee, tea, and fruit juice are provided as part of the Bush Breakfast. ALL CELLPHONE ADDICTS AND MUSIC LOVERS BE WARNED:

EXPLORE UNTOUCHED COASTAL BEAUTY

Long stretches of sandy beach, rocky cliffs, beautiful lagoons, and pristine coastal forests characterise this section of the Wild Coast. From Mazeppa Bay in the Transkei to Haga Haga in the Eastern Cape, most of this unspoilt coastline can only be seen by those who are prepared to hike it! At the start, you will feel as though you have stepped back in time, as there is little or no development along this rural coastline. Accompanied by a local guide, who is a member of the community and well acquainted with the route, the 64-kilometre trail can be walked by anyone who is reasonably fit. There are no serious challenges other than the odd river, which must be waded. Although, when river levels are too high after heavy rains, a ferry crossing is arranged. The trail package covers overnight stays at conveniently located hotels along the way. Rest up in comfortable en-suite bungalows and enjoy well-deserved dinners, often consisting of fresh seafood. A delicious cooked breakfast to start your day and a packed lunch to take with you is all part of the deal. THE SCENIC ROUTE [PHOTOG RAPH E R F OC US ]

SEE WHAT I SAW South African born travel photographer, TC Maila, captures life in rural parts of the country with such depth and understanding that his photographs seem to naturally transcend themselves, telling meaningful stories that remain etched in your mind. How did your love affair with photography begin?

www.onroutemag.co.za

I believe we start taking pictures the first moment we open our eyes as babies. I fell in love with pictures when I realised I could draw images better than most kids could. In 2008, I borrowed a camera from a friend and started using photography as a medium to express what I see out there.

14

What sparked your particular interest in documenting people of rural and street environments? I was born in a small village in Limpopo called gaMaila. Later, when my family moved to a township, I started appreciating the simple life we left behind in the village. There are such beautiful undocumented moments in remote areas!

What are some of the challenges and triumphs of photographing in remote parts of SA? Some places are just impossible to get to by vehicle. However, that makes the journey more interesting for me as I get to interact deeply with life in the village. I experience the rawness of the environment by talking to people, using alternative modes of transport, being accommodated by strangers in their homes, and offered food without anything expected from me. So far, I’ve faced more beautiful situations than challenges.

What personal attributes or qualities do you believe make a good travel photographer? Make sure you empty your cup when you’re about to travel. You can only come back with a cup full of rich experiences.

What do you look for when choosing a new travel location to experience or photograph? Since I discovered that I enjoy being around people and nature, my destinations are always influenced by that. However, I always keep an open mind, as beautiful moments can present themselves at any time.

Can you highlight the best story told through one of your images?

When pain is just too much in a man. Location: Limpopo

As a travel photographer, I always come across people or strangers randomly asking if I can take pictures of them. I was in a village, and a man walked up to me and asked for a picture. I lifted my camera, and he had a smile, but when I was about to click his face changed, and he dropped his head. I took the picture, but he did not even want to see the image. He walked away. The picture I took captured the most moving raw emotion, and to this day, it isn’t easy for me to look at the picture without my eyes heating up.

What skills are required in preempting a spontaneous moment that will translate strongly in an image? I avoid capturing rehearsed moments. They have a short lifespan, in my opinion.

Travel is a big part of your work – where are some of the best places you’ve been and what remains on your bucket list of places to go? In our village, we move together. Location: Venda

that a mind can never get tired of seeing. So, I stopped taking pretty pictures and focused rather on taking pictures that tell a story.

What has been your biggest lesson learnt through travel? The biggest lesson learnt through travel is that people that travel are less troubled.

Any secret tricks of the trade you can share with aspiring travel photographers out there? Don’t go where everyone is going or has been before. And, if it happens that you find yourself where everyone is, then don’t take a picture of what everyone is looking at. Take a picture of what you are feeling, when looking at what everyone is looking at.

What are your future goals in the photographic industry? A man who lives with everyone in peace, can afford to smile in his sleep. Location: Sekhukhune

forced there. I would love to visit all the small towns and villages across the world. Starting with Africa, of course!

How do you think you have evolved as a photographer through your body of work? While visiting the village my Uncle lives in, I took some pictures of him, and everyone kept on telling him he looked so good

I would love to see my work hanging in buildings and homes in all four corners of the world, so I can afford to buy myself a home and hang some of my work on my walls.

To contact TC Maila: in the picture. He was happy to hear the 084 041 3597/mmabje@gmail.com compliments. And, while everyone gathered around me to see his picture, he then asked, www.facebook.com/seewatisaw “Now how am I going to see this picture everyone is raving about?” His question was PHOTO & FILM EXPO a very difficult one to answer, as my Uncle is TC is a guest speaker at the upcoming Photo & a blind man. And, this in turn posed a bigger Film Expo 19 – 22 November 2015 question for me: “Why am I a photographer?” Catch him there on Saturday 11:30am-12:15pm It was then that I made a promise to myself to take pictures with a deeper meaning beyond www.photofilmexpo.com what the eye can see and instead take pictures

Anyone who grew up in the 80s and 90s will recognize these games from the early consoles of our youth. Although, gaming has taken serious leaps forward since then, let us not forget that the classic originals of the past have ultimately defined the games we play today.

FINAL FANTASY RELEASED: 1990 Final Fantasy was already on its seventh version by the time it hit PlayStation one. It’s an epic roleplaying game that involves a lot of magic, combat and generally an epic storyline. A game can take months to finish as it’s played in an open world environment. Currently, Final Fantasy is awaiting the launch of its 15th edition early in 2016.

THE ARCADE [G AME RE VI E W S ] BY: @carandgameguru

GAMING THEN AND NOW BATTLE CITY TANKS RELEASED: 1985 On this list, this game has no direct link to any other game. Battle City Tanks (BCT) involved shooting your way through a series of obstacles, to eventually shoot, and destroy your enemy. War Thunder on PS4 is a tank and plane simulation game that probably drew some similarities from BCT. But, we have to believe that many of the most popular war and combat games took some of their lead from this classic.

TENNIS RELEASED: 1985 One of the original 18 games launched with the Nintendo NES. The first versions of this game got more and more difficult by simply making the ball move faster and faster. Tennis nowadays is a lot more complicated, with opportunities to play with legends of the game, as well as current day heroes like Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Grand Slam Tennis 2 is the latest version available on PS4 or Xbox one.

Originally released in 1989, it wasn’t until the launch of the second version in 1990, that this classic arcade style game on Nintendo NES really got any critical acclaim. TMNT are all the rage at the moment, with a string of cartoon series on TV and a blockbuster movie starring Megan Fox dominating the box offices in 2014, with another one due to hit the silver screen soon. But, the gaming franchise was rather quiet for a few years; however, the four fighting Turtles are now available in a game called Out of The Shadows, on PS3, PS4, and Xbox one, surely symbolizing the start of a multitude of versions in the future.

SUPER MARIO BROS. RELEASED: 1985 Super Mario Bros. versions 1, 2, and 3 are widely considered some of the greatest games of all-time and even the modern version ranks among the top games available now. Super Mario Bros. 3 is regarded as the best of the three originals and is probably the one most of us grew up playing, controlling Mario himself, or his green brother Luigi. The Super Mario franchise has spawned many spin-offs like Mario Carting, but currently Super Mario Bros. fans can play Super Mario World on PS4, which itself is regarded as one of the greatest games ever.

RAD RACER RELEASED: 1987 Rad Racer was by no means a complicated racing game, but it remains one of the most popular. Like the original tennis game, Rad Racer does little to develop technical tracks and doesn’t require decisive decision making when playing. It simply uses speed to make the game more and more difficult. The further you get, the faster you go. It’s up to you to control it. Rad Racer has spawned many great racing games like F1, Need for Speed, Forza and probably the greatest of the lot, Gran Turismo.

MIKE TYSON PUNCH OUT!!

NINJA GAIDEN

RELEASED: 1987

RELEASED: 1989

Ranked in the top ten original games on Nintendo NES, Punch Out!! is a classic boxing game that used Mike Tyson’s image in the late 80s, to set a platform for gaming that went much deeper than just punching your opponent and moving on. Punch Out!! was remade for Nintendo Wii a few years back, but it’s current games like Fight Champion II that have stolen the boxing game limelight for their realistic use of fight mechanics and ability to allow gamers to develop as boxers both physically and technically.

Ninja Gaiden is one of the most difficult platform games ever. Only gaming purists will remember Ninja Gaiden on NES, but this fighting game has led to some of the world’s most loved games. The game is rich in action, has depth of story, and requires much patience to complete. Currently, the Assassin’s Creed franchise is as close as you will get to Ninja Gaiden, and both franchises have a ludicrous following and fan base.

SONIC THE HEDGEHOG RELEASED: 1991

There are hundreds of other great games from the past - visit onRoute’s Facebook page and tell us which ones you loved the most!

www.onroutemag.co.za

One of the few classic games not to have been born on a Nintendo NES, Sonic the Hedgehog can trace its roots back to the SEGA Mega Drive. The Mega Drive is widely considered the first super-gaming platform. With much-improved graphics and a substantially higher price tag, the game that defined a console and launched a franchise has to the first and original Sonic the Hedgehog. Currently, you can play Sonic the Hedgehog as a mobile game, with talk of a launch on PS4 in the near future.

THE JEEP RENEGADE

T www.onroutemag.co.za

he Renegade is described by Jeep as the most capable SUV ever and on a recent test, we were able to see just how true that is. Like the new Cherokee, the Renegade has a new and rather strange look that’s somehow familiar with that famous Jeep front grill. The Renegade looks like a mixture between the popular, and outlandish, Wrangler with the Cherokee. It has a toned down flamboyance to it, which makes it totally cool in our books. The Renegade has a burly exterior that gives you the impression that it’s built to off-road and a stylish interior that sits comfortably in the category of a business sedan. The finishes are world-class with everything you could ever need no more than the push of a button away.

28

The fact that it looks like a bushwhacker doesn’t mean it isn’t suited to the trendy parts of town. If you were tempted to take the Renegade on a weekend adventure, we’ve been assured that it handles just about anything you throw at it. The model range and customizations available on the new Renegade are second to none. We think the toughest choice you’ll have to make would be trying to mix and match everything to suit you perfectly. The Renegade ranges from R340 000* to R450 000* depending on specifications.

THE FIAT 500X

T

he Fiat 500 is one of the most popular hatchbacks in the world. Its popularity in South Africa has been slightly limited due to the exchange rate, but you still see enough of them on the road, which tells you something about how good these Fiats are. The 500X is Fiat’s foray into the crossover market. We tested the Fiat 500L sometime ago, and although not a completely bad car, we felt it lacked the same spark and funk that made the normal 500 so popular. So you can forgive us for accepting the 500X with a little trepidation, although, it didn’t take long for us to warm to this Italian CUV. There seem to be a plethora of cars available in this segment, so competition is incredibly steep. But the 500X is hot! The looks are a combination of cute and sexy and everything it promises on the outside, it delivers within. The interior has enough Italian flair to make you take notice, but not too much to make it distracting. The 500X is never going to win a drag race, and we found the engine a tad sluggish, but that doesn’t mean it was slow. The 103 kWs makes the Fiat a smooth roller rather than a speed queen. The Fiat 500X comes in three different models that range from R310 000* to R380 000* depending on specifications. If you are prepared to take a chance on something a little less known and a little less popular, you might be happily surprised.

“…a combination of cute and sexy and everything it promises on the outside, it delivers within.” Fiat 500X

THE NISSAN JUKE

T

his isn’t the first time we’ve had the chance to review a Juke. When we first got behind the wheel of this CUV, we were blown away by the fun we had driving it around town. The Juke wasn’t really designed for anyone with a large family, as the storage space inside is incredibly limited, but what you do get from a Juke is an agile, nippy and incredibly cool car to drive.

The six-speed manual gearbox delivered smooth and efficient transmission shifts at high revs, and the engine was fast enough to give the driver a great deal of confidence behind the wheel. The lag that came from the turbo did mean that low-speed pull-offs were cumbersome, but that did little to detract from the fun we had darting in and out of traffic. The 140 kWs under our feet provided a great buzz while driving. What makes the Juke stand out is its outlandish and unique design elements - bold and striking lines on the outside carry through to the interior. Inside, the Juke is as basic as the price tag suggests, but also has just enough gadgets to leave the owner wanting for very little. The model we tested had all the bells and whistles but was also at the top end of the Juke price range. Starting at a shade under R260 000* and increasing to a touch over R330 000*, the Juke punches above its weight if you have the cash to splash.

HEARTS AND HEROES

GLAMPING FOR THE LEOPARD! If you think there is absolutely nothing glamorous about camping, you have obviously not yet been exposed to “glamping” — aka glamorous camping. It exists! It is trending and if you do it right you could be saving the leopard while you relax! By Donna Verrydt

B

Golden leopard cub

The Vista at Thaba Tholo Reserve

lack Leopard Camp, is a luxury tented camp situated in the Malaria free Thaba Tholo Wilderness Reserve, just outside Lydenburg (only three and a half hours from Johannesburg) and it is owned by leopard lover Alan Watson.

www.onroutemag.co.za

Alan’s camp offers a luxury safari experience completely different to that of a traditional eat-sleep-game-drive lodge, because at Black Leopard you are totally immersed into the African bush by staying in tents — but not the pop up kind that makes you want to run a mile.

30

These tented “suites” all offer large, plush beds — the type you never want to leave — mini-bars (complete with chocolate bars and wine), large decks, on which to sip your G&Ts, and en-suite bathrooms. Each suite also boasts an outdoor bush bathroom, some with outdoor showers and others with baths, from where you can soak in the memories of a fantastic day with the cliffs and the blue sky as your roof. But most of all, Black Leopard

offers an energy efficient, minimal footprint alternative that does a lot of good! While you’re taking time out, your mind will be at peace knowing that this unique experience is also helping Alan save the leopard. Continuing his late father Ronnie’s legacy, Alan is ensuring the reserve is a safe haven for leopards (and other carnivores) where they will not be hunted. Leopards can be problematic for farmers of livestock and Thaba Tholo reserve has many neighbouring farmers — so it is important for Alan to find a solution so that farmers do not lose valuable livestock to leopards, and leopards are not killed to ensure the safety of livestock.

neighbouring farmers have become interested in the research and have allowed cameras on their property too in order to understand the leopard dynamics. From the data, three generations of leopard at Thaba Tholo were identified and four resident leopards which have produced eight cubs since 2012. One female leopard was even photographed in March 2015 with an extremely rare erythristic (Golden) cub — an amazing discovery in the leopard world.

In this endeavour, Alan has allowed, and fully supported, the Ingwe Leopard Research at Thaba Tholo, which has been undertaken by Tara Pirie, a Doctoral Researcher at the University of Reading in the UK.

The point of this research, and Alan’s dream, is to promote a co-existence between humans and carnivores. A survey conducted in the area suggests that people do like the leopards and are tolerant of them, which is encouraging! The next step however is to provide assistance to the farmer when there is a problem animal or provide prevention methods, both of which need money.

In order to monitor and understand the dynamics of the leopard population on, and surrounding, Thaba Tholo, camera traps were set up to gather data. Many of the

Long term monitoring still continues at Thaba Tholo, however resources are limited. Camera traps are a vital part of the research and the more the reserve has, the more area

can be covered, which leads to a greater understanding of the leopard population. If more funds are attained for preventative methods such as sponsoring Anatolian guard dogs which can be used for protecting livestock, it may be possible to reduce the human-carnivore conflict in the area and promote a sustainable co-existence. EVERY GOLFER’S BUCKET LIST By Damian Murphy

PEBBLE BEACH GOLF LINKS (USA) Images by Shutterstock and Golf courses

5

Picking the five best golf courses in the world is an incredibly difficult task. If money and sheer impossibility were off the table, Augusta would probably rank number one on nearly every Golfer’s list. This bucket list, however, points out five courses that everyone can and should play!

Jack Nicklaus said that if he had one more round of golf to play before he died, it would be Pebble Beach Golf Links. One of the most iconic courses in the United States, Pebble Beach has hosted five US Open Championships, and will again host the US Open in 2019. Iconic holes on the course include the par three seventh and the par five 18th.

Pebble Beach Golf Links

ROYAL COUNTY DOWN GOLF CLUB, CHAMPIONSHIP LINKS (NORTHERN IRELAND)

The Royal County Down Golf Club is located in Newcastle, Northern Ireland. It opened way back in 1889 and is one of the oldest golf clubs in Ireland. Royal County Down has two 18-hole links courses, the Championship Links and the Annesley Links, but it’s the Championship Links that’s really worth visiting. It’s ranked inside the top five courses in the world and, on most lists, is regarded as the best course outside of America. The course has played host to the Walker Cup, the Senior British Open, and the Irish Open.

MISSION HILLS GOLF CLUB (CHINA) Unlike the other courses on this list, we have decided not to single out just one of the twelve courses in this mega-resort, but rather highlight Mission Hills as a destination on its own. The 11 18-hole championship courses and one par three course were all designed by various pro-golfers. Some famous golfers to put their name on the Mission Hills Courses include our very own Ernie Els, Jack Nicklaus, Greg Norman and women’s golfing legend, Annika Sörenstam. Mission Hills hosted the WGC’s HSBC Champions Trophy. The Guinness Book of World Records listed Mission Hills as the largest golf facility in the world.

THE ST ANDREWS LINKS, OLD COURSE (SCOTLAND)

Known as ‘The home of golf’, this is the ultimate destination for anyone who has ever picked up a set of clubs. Established in 1552, St Andrews is a golfing destination with several courses worth playing, but none more sought after than a tee time at the Old Course. The Old Course has hosted 29 Open Championships. Although winning the Open Championship is regarded as a crowning achievement of any professional’s career, winning it at St Andrews holds particular importance because of this course’s history.

PONY TREKKING

GO WHERE MOST CAPABLE 4X4s CAN’T LESOTHO There’s no more authentic way to travel Lesotho than by riding a tough little Basotho pony. In Lesotho, owning one is like owning a car, and you’ll spot them everywhere – from waiting patiently outside a shop in the urban environments to clambering high up in the steep rocky plains. Various lodges in the area offer ponytrekking trips, and it’s a wonderful way to take in the views and wrap yourself in the raw beauty of the area. At Malealea Lodge, beginners can do trips of an hour or two although longer half and full day excursions are also on offer with a lunch stop along the way. For the more adventurous, there’s also multi-day options – where sleeping bags, waterproof clothing and food must all be packed. The ride is a bit scary at first, but the way the ponies handle such technical, narrow mountain tracks is nothing short of amazing! You don’t need any prior riding experience, but you do need to weigh less than 90 kilograms to qualify for this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Pony Trekking

As the crowds continue to pack into gyms around the country and the price of contracts continue to skyrocket, people are on the hunt for alternative ways to stay active and healthy that don’t cost an arm and a leg. The latest running craze has more than 300 000 people spending their Saturday morning outside. Bruce Fordyce, South African running legend, tells us more about his initiative and involvement in launching local parkruns. People of all shapes and sizes seem to be taking up some form of exercise and running is one of the most popular. Why do you believe this is?

parkruns are free and rely on the support of volunteers and sponsors. Who are the people and companies behind parkruns?

It’s always been around; I just believe it’s being made more accessible to non-athletes now. If you look at races like the Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans Ultra, their cut-off times have been extended by an hour to allow more people to finish.

I can’t begin to thank the people behind the scenes of every parkrun enough. Because they are free to all runners, we rely completely on the help of each race director and their teams, who volunteer their time every Saturday, come rain or shine, to make sure that their community has a parkrun. We are also incredibly grateful for the support of our sponsors Blue Label Telecoms, Discovery Vitality, and Adidas.

What things should a new runner look out for on a parkrun? The cardinal sin for parkruns is not to register. parkruns are free, but we require everyone who participates to register and bring along their barcode. This will ensure their time is recorded. Arriving without your barcode means you will be timed as an unknown. parkruns are for people of all abilities, and there is no required level of fitness. We just want you there being active.

As one of the greatest SA athletes of all time, where did you get the idea to launch parkruns? Thank you. parkruns are the brainchild of Paul Sinton-Hewitt. He started them 11 years ago in the UK, he approached me in April 2011 to start them up in South Africa. I took my time to get them going, but I was finally able to launch the first one in South Africa by November that year. We now have more than 300 000 registered parkrunners in South Africa alone, with a projected 500 000 people signing up by the end of 2016.

THE NEW GET-FIT CRAZE!

Rondebosch parkrun

parkruns have developed an almost cult following, what makes them so much more popular than just regular club running? parkruns are all about community. They are free; we run every Saturday regardless of the weather. If it’s raining, we run, if it’s a holiday, we run. For 52 weekends a year there is a parkrun and we encourage everybody to come along. There is no status given to winners or losers just bring your barcode along and run or walk and try to beat your own time.

Are there different distances for parkrunning and what is the end goal for those who join? Every parkrun is modelled on exactly the same formula. It’s five kilometres long, on a Saturday and must be safe for runners of all abilities. We just want to get as many South Africans of all ages out and about.

Eventually, some of our runners are going to look to move up to bigger distances and more challenging runs. We’ve had people graduate from a fivekilometre parkrun, to finishing Comrades. More people run our parkruns across South Africa every Saturday than run Comrades every year. A great thing about the runners who go on to do those bigger events, they still make time to run their parkrun every Saturday.

There have been so many stories, some about weight loss, changing lives, running Comrades, but one that stands out particularly for me is that of Ari Seirilis who is the CEO of the QuadPara and wheelchair bound. He joined the Durban North Beach parkrun a while back and hasn’t stopped coming back. He recently achieved the feat of completing his 50th parkrun. Adidas made him a special shirt with his number on the front, so everyone would know he’d managed to complete his first milestone.

We heard a friend’s dad bragging about getting his red t-shirt at his particular parkrun. What does this What are the most popular parkrun venues in South Africa? mean?

www.onroutemag.co.za

A red t-shirt is given to anyone who has completed 50 parkruns. That means you have dedicated a whole year’s worth of Saturdays to parkrunning. You get a t-shirt with the number 50 on the back and the flag of the country where you completed your 50 runs. What’s great about that is if you are running in another country, people know where you are from and how many races you’ve done.

Hartenbos parkrun

Every parkrun is popular with their specific communities, but some of the more unique ones include the Stellenbosch parkrun through the vineyards, the Soweto Mofolo parkrun and Cannibals Cave parkrun in the Drakensberg. All the parkruns are having a great impact on local tourism, with businesses, coffee shops, and even accommodation seeing the benefit of these community-driven events.

Every parkrun is popular with their specific communities, but some of the more unique ones include the Stellenbosch parkrun through the vineyards, the Soweto Mofolo parkrun and Cannibals Cave parkrun in the Drakensberg. As a member, can you run at any parkrun depending where you are at the time? Absolutely. We have some parkrunners who are trying to complete all 64 different runs in South Africa. You can run any parkrun, anywhere in the world, as long as you have your barcode. I recently ran a parkrun in Dublin, Ireland.

How are parkrun venues chosen? The community is responsible for where the parkruns are held, so it all comes down to where the people around you want to run. Because it’s volunteer run, we’re also approached by a particular community and asked to create a parkrun for them. They need to follow the rules concerning distance and safety, making sure it’s not too complicated, but once an idea is presented, we do our best to get it off the ground.

If you could give one message to anyone interested in taking up running, that is too afraid to do it, what would that be? Try parkrunning. It’s a non-threatening way to pick up the sport. It’s a brilliant way to get healthy, make friends and no one ever gets left behind. No matter how slow you are, there will always be someone there at the end to clock your time. www.parkrun.co.za

Simply being outdoors emphasises experience above technology and boosts fitness, confidence and imaginations. Not convinced yet? You will be once you read more about the amazing benefits of being outdoors:

Calm the Mind Spending time outdoors has a proven positive impact on reducing stress levels and lowering blood pressure. Research undertaken in Japan, a country of long working days and high suicide rates, reveals that immersing yourself in the natural world significantly reduces stress levels and wards off depression. In response, Japan’s Forestry Agency has created a network of Forest Therapy trails on which rangers monitor visitors’ blood pressure.

GREAT CAR PACKING TIPS!

• Pack large, heavy items at the bottom of the boot, keeping them as far forward as possible to keep the centre of gravity low and optimize weight distribution.

• Make sure items from the cargo section will not strike passengers in an emergency situation.

• Avoid packing above the line of the back seats, as this will obscure your rear view.

• Remain focused on the importance of having a clear visual of the road and other road users.

• Packing suitcases and duffle bags higher than the back seat can be dangerous. Not only does it decrease visibility, but it also puts passengers at risk of a serious injury in a collision.

• Consider using spaces beneath passenger seats, as well. The better your luggage weight distribution, the better fuel consumption and better vehicle handling you will have on the road.

• If you must use the full height of the boot, invest in a net or other protective screen/safety partition to prevent items from flying forward. • Empty boxes or plastic crates can be useful in the boot to stop smaller items sliding around.

THINGS TO AVOID

• Avoid using the inside of the passenger area for storing your luggage. • Guard against loose objects becoming projectiles - laptops, books and cellphones can become serious projectiles during a collision. • Keep the area around the driver’s feet clear. Loose items are distracting – and dangerous if they slide beneath the driver’s feet and keep the pedals from working properly.

Images courtesy of Shutterstock

Before you start your road trip adventures, give serious thought to packing your vehicle safely.

• Consider how you will get to the spare tyre or an emergency kit should there be a roadside emergency! www.arivealive.co.za

REMEMBER: LAST IN, FIRST OUT! Organize items in the order they may need to be accessed. Have essential items that you may need during the journey within easy access – such as food, drinks, nappies, medicine, or entertainment for the kids.

PACKING LUGGAGE ON THE ROOF Safely secure any load carried on the roof of the vehicle. Items on the roof should be stored in a securely attached roof box, respecting the weight restrictions of the car.

DID YOU KNOW?

• You can find the weight limit for your car on the ‘VIN plate’ under the bonnet or in the handbook. • Under emergency braking at 50 km/h, loose items can have a force of up to 50 times their weight!

HEALTH & SAFETY

‘STOP THE CRASH’ ‘Stop the Crash’ is a global campaign that aims to raise the awareness of state-of-the-art safety systems and life-saving technologies. Today vehicles must meet new car safety testing standards to be awarded a top safety rating of five stars. In Europe, the basic requirement for achieving this rating is crash avoidance and mitigation systems such as adult and child occupant protection systems, and pedestrian protection systems. Vehicles must also have assistance systems such as Electronic Stability Control (ESC), Autonomous Emergency Braking Systems (AEBS), and Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC) systems for a five-star rating. Since seatbelts, ESC, tire pressure monitoring systems (TPMS) and AEBS became mandatory for commercial vehicles; the total number of road traffic fatalities, injuries and accidents has declined significantly. The Global New Car Assessment Programme (NCAP) is leading the drive to improve road safety with innovations, continuous refinement, and improvement of components and systems. To achieve the United Nation’s target to cut half of all road fatalities by 2020 the need to promote the fitment of ESC, AEBS, and Anti-lock Braking Systems (ABS) is even stronger.

Setting out in the brisk early morning air for a quick five kilometres is the highlight of any runner’s day but the fact is that runners are vulnerable on the road. There’s the possibility of being injured by a passing vehicle or a potential attacker! This fact has unfortunately sent many runners indoors to train on treadmills. Luckily, iLiveSafe provides a product that’s helping runners take back roads across the country.

66

A leader in complete identification, safety and rapid response, iLiveSafe is set to become a vital and handy running accessory. The innocent and subtle bracelet around your wrist will keep you safe and allow you to get in touch with those who will send help. Runners will now have a means of personal identification and access to immediate emergency services. The iLiveSafe call centre is staffed 24/7 with dedicated and highly trained operatives who have access to emergency responders across the country, to ensure timely and efficient response reaches you in an emergency situation. Renowned local runner and 2016 Olympic hopeful, Mapaseka Makhanya says that wearing her wristband has changed her outlook when stepping out the door for a run. “Even though I consider myself a very positive athlete with a positive attitude, I’m also a realist,” says Mapaseka. www.ilivesafe.co.za

Throughout the ‘Stop the Crash’ campaign, Global NCAP and its partners will be holding driving demonstrations to raise awareness about the benefits of safety technologies that are already being volume-produced. They hope to encourage their adoption in subcompact and compact models too. The aim is to achieve further steady reductions in the number of traffic fatalities, injuries, and accidents on a global platform. The ‘Stop the Crash’ campaign officially launches on 18 November 2015, so keep your eyes peeled and ears open! www.stopthecrash.org | #stopthecrash

My favourite part of the country is...

My best advice to any adventuring road-trippers is…

The Garden Route.

Stop along the way, make it an adventure, it’s not only about the destination.

When I was a little boy I was… Born in Belgium, my folks moved around Spain for a while and then I moved to White River in South Africa, when I was two years old.

Not a lot of people know this about me, but… My birth name is Dingaan.

I never travel without… Toothbrush and toothpaste.

My ultimate travel companion of all time would be… A busload of my friends and family.

The most memorable response to my music by a fan has been… “You saved my life.”

If I were not a musician, I would choose to be… A bored billionaire.

My best/most unique/ interesting experience while The top three things on my bucket list are… on the road has been… Experiencing the sheer awesomeness of Victoria Falls!

Travel the entire Far East. Create my own musical. Travel across Africa on a motorcycle.

Gauteng (Sesotho for "place of gold") is South Africa's smallest province (17 000 square kilometres) and it includes most of the towns strung east to west along the gold reef, from Springs in the far East Rand to Randfontein in the west. It runs down to the Vaal River in the South, and just beyond South Africa's capital, Pretoria, in the north.
