TRAVEL THAT MATTERS!

O

ne of the largest and fastest growing sectors of tourism in the world, Voluntourism, is fuelled by those seeking out travel that matters, as opposed to days spent sipping cocktails while working on a tan. Defined as a combination of voluntary services with the traditional elements of travel, it potentially contributes greatly to the environment and community! Yet this multi-million dollar industry is not without its grey (and sometimes unethical) areas and many are increasingly skeptical of Voluntourism’s rising popularity. This works both ways. As much as facilities hosting volunteers need to be scrutinised, it’s important to question how genuine the motive to help others really is? Does it extend

Volunteers post tree planting day with Greenpop

beyond that gold star on one’s resume? This is especially relevant in our selfie culture where capturing a cool pic with children in Africa, or next to an endangered animal, is sure to get you likes and followers on social media. But what is the impact of that action? On a recent walking tour in Kayamandi, Stellenbosch, we came across a group of European volunteers working on an art project. They had been there for two weeks, working side by side with the teachers and children at a local school, painting beautiful murals on the wall. An art exhibition at the end of their time portrayed true talent and there was a lovely atmosphere about. Then my guide, Thembi, pointed out some photos on display, of people with their shoes,

each with a narrative to match. They were beautiful: One woman holding shoes that belonged to her late brother, another with a gorgeous pair she’d worked extra hard to buy, a mom holding her daughter’s first baby shoes. I was told that the images and stories all formed part of a second book to be published by one of the volunteers – a book that none of the participants would receive or benefit from! Suddenly it felt like blatant exploitation of their goodwill to partake and share their stories. This scenario begs the question: as volunteers what are we taking and what are we giving back?

Images by Dawn Jorgensen

There’s something incredibly satisfying about giving, especially when combining it with travel. Dawn Jorgensen is a firm believer that every little bit counts, and is all for people doing what they can to contribute to a positive change. She, like many, embraces the idea of voluntourism. We take a closer look at the feel good facts.

Well planned and managed voluntourism is a critical tool in wildlife conservation, rural and community development, and can sustain livelihoods. Let’s seek out the best ways to make a difference whilst taking humbling lessons from our experiences.

CROSSROADS [S OME T H I NG TO THI NK AB OUT ]

CHOOSE THE RIGHT ORGANISATION The trick is to select a legitimate organisation offering a wholesome and valuable prospect for both parties. Here are some recommendations in a variety of fields from endangered and priority species conservation to creative art and tree planting, even marine conservation!

WILDLIFE ACT Wildlife Act’s mission is to help save the planet’s endangered wildlife and places from extinction by running important conservation projects focused on cheetah, African wild dog, rhino, lion, elephant, leopard, vulture and turtles. Their volunteer programme allows you to work with trained wildlife monitors at the reserves – tracking animals as part of their conservation projects. They only work in small teams of no more than five wildlife volunteers per reserve, so you have one-on-one time gaining true conservation experience. The days are full, the work is important and it provides volunteers with critical knowledge about African conservation. As they say, it’s not always pretty or easy, but it is real Africa and real conservation. www.wildlifeact.com

SOUTH AFRICAN SHARK CONSERVANCY For lovers of the ocean, Marine Science students are invited to intern in the Hermanus and Walker Bay area where they can assist with curating data to benefit the many different aspects of marine life. For this it is best if you have a marine science interest. Scuba diving abilities are also helpful. Their research is focused on the development of biological and ecological baselines, as well as long-term monitoring of species diversity, abundance and habitat. An intern or volunteer would participate in a variety of projects depending on the time of year. They offer one, two and three month internships. Must love sharks! www.sharkconservancy.org

BAMBINI DREAM FOUNDATION Any work with children comes with an element of risk, especially if you are not qualified in education. The Bambini Dream Foundation in Cape Town aims to help heal young children through art and music, and lend a helping hand that will improve their lives. They have found a focus that combines volunteer work with the advancement of the children involved through hosted talks and workshops. As long as your workshop can engage young imaginations and nurture self-belief and creativity, you can offer your time at no cost to you. Even if full time isn’t an option, once a month you can participate in a creative project where you can bring your skill to the children, be it music, photography, writing or art. www.bambinidream.org

GREENPOP A non-profit initiative based in Cape Town, Greenpop have made it their mission to encourage a green and sustainable way of life. To date Greenpop have planted more than 50 000 trees with hundreds of volunteers. They offer long term volunteering and interning prospects where you can gain hands-on experience working in urban greening, reforestation and eco-education. Their energy and love for the world is refreshing and infectious. It’s an environment that inspires you to be a better person, whilst doing something for the communities you engage with. www.greenpop.org

Walk with, don’t ride Elephants

BE AWARE OF THE PITFALLS There are pitfalls to voluntourism and it is essential to do your research, ask lots of questions, check the organisations out on social media and connect with other volunteers, wherever possible. Avoid children’s orphanages, as it is very hard to gauge how a positive impact can be made during a short stay.

DO YOUR RESEARCH! Here is a list of questions to ask and things to be aware of before selecting a place to volunteer at: • How long has the project been going and what are their long-term plans? • How do they select the volunteers and if a fee is being paid, how is the money distributed? • What will you be doing during your stay? (Get clarity on this as you will want to be meaningfully involved). • Golden rule: Make sure no children or animals are performing for you or for money and that the project isn’t funded through inappropriate interaction between visitors and animals. • How is the community and environment benefiting from the project? (Get the details). • Always make sure it is a good match to your area of interest and skill set.

EXPLORING THE With more than ten years of collective experience as a photographer and filmmaker, Timothy Marks enjoys the challenges of large-scale production as well as the triumphs of small personal projects. His focus; always on exploring and telling the African Narrative.

Timothy Marks AKA TimfromZim

AFRICAN NARRATIVE In such a diverse climate, both culturally and environmentally, I grew up with an appetite to explore the unseen and less travelled routes of Zimbabwe. One could spend a lifetime exploring Zim and still find new and amazing places that demand exploration. My passion is to show the rest of the world that it’s not just another developing nation with an uncertain future, but also an exciting destination with an amazing diversity of cultures, landscapes and wildlife that make it a crown jewel for adventure in Africa.

How would you aptly describe your passion for exploring and expressing ‘The African Narrative’? My passion for exploring this vast and wild continent is the driving

force behind my personal and professional work as filmmaker and photographer. It takes patience, perseverance and determination to explore this vast narrative. I am passionate about exploring the remotest places and people that have had very little exposure to modernisation. Africa is a melting pot for cultural clashes, from traditional practices and beliefs to western postmodernism and pop culture, which is how you get a beautiful mix that can only be described as ‘African’.

How does your background in film influence your work as a photographer? As a filmmaker, you are taught to look at an image in a sequence of moving images as opposed to a photographer who sees a single image standing on its own. There is also the element of sound that is so crucial to filmmaking that doesn’t come into the photographic

realm as much. Filmmaking is in many ways like photography, in that technical knowledge needs to be coupled with artistic experimentation. The aim is to tell a story that your audience can both see and feel.

What personal attributes and skills do you think one needs to capture good photographs? Patience, determination and perseverance are crucial elements that all photographers need to grasp.

What are some of the challenges and triumphs of your job as a photographer? Challenges can vary from people-related to technical limitations, but challenges should be a welcomed norm as a photographer, and you should not shy away from them. Some of my greatest triumphs as a photographer have risen from the greatest challenges.

Do you think the art of capturing images is an innate gift or a craft that is learned through experience? I believe it is a bit of both. You can have raw talent and capture outstanding pictures, but have very little technical understanding of how you did it. You can also have a very technically good photographer that knows how to work their equipment to capture a good image, but they lack a creative eye to find the “wow” factor.

If a picture speaks a thousand words, which of your images tells the best story?

www.onroutemag.co.za

One of my first pictures, ‘Clouds of Glory’. When I took this picture, I had just started out in photography and had very little technical or artistic knowledge. I was at Mahamara Reserve (about 120 kilometres outside of Harare) and had been fishing for bass all day when a huge thunderstorm formed overhead. The cloud formation was truly unique; the way the light from the sunset was captured in the clouds was nothing short of biblical.

Nyamepi Campsite Sunrise (Mana Pools National Park)

“My passion for exploring this vast and wild continent is the driving force behind my personal and professional work as filmmaker and photographer.”

What are your thoughts on the evolution of photography with the influence of social media and Instagram? The ability to take a picture and share it across different global platforms is astounding! It opens you up to a whole community of likeminded creative people that are as interested in photography as I am, and it is accessible to everyone from the amateur to the serious photographer. It also allows you to view inspiring images, which pushes you to take better pictures and tell better stories.

www.onroutemag.co.za

What is your advice to aspiring photographers?

16

“Find out what you’re passionate about and you will never have to work another day in your life.” This is not only a life principle but also a photographic principle. Find out what genre of photography you love taking pictures of, and start! As you take more and more pictures, you will find out what works and what doesn’t work. Don’t be afraid of experimenting, work at it until you get it right, and never give up.

TOP 10 GAMES TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN 2016!

We could comfortably name 40 new gaming releases worth waiting for, but we’ve narrowed it down to 10!

DARK SOULS III (PC, PS4, XBOX ONE)

DOOM (PC, PS4, XBOX ONE) RELEASE DATE: LATE 2016 The plan with the latest Doom is to move back to the original shoot-and-killeverything format that made the very first version so successful. Less story, more blood and gore. The purists should love it and so should everyone who gets tired of games with more story than playtime.

RELEASE DATE: APRIL 2016 A hit with hard-core gamers, Dark Souls III completes the trilogy for this fantasy thriller. The creators have promised to keep the game as authentic as possible, tweaking only minor issues to ensure it’s more playable for the novice, yet still a challenge for the experts.

DEUS EX: MANKIND DIVIDED (PC, PS4, XBOX ONE) RELEASE DATE: AUGUST 2016 The original Deus Ex came out in 2000 and Square Enix, the developers, announced at E3 last year that a new game is coming to the franchise this year. Mankind Divided is set in an open world in 2029 and uses gameplay dynamics that allow the player to choose his path and ultimately lead to different endings for different players.

FAR CRY PRIMAL (PS4, XBOX ONE)

RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 2016

DISHONORED 2 (PC, PS4, XBOX ONE)

RELEASE DATE: APRIL/MAY 2016

www.onroutemag.co.za

Dishonored was one of the best stealth action games ever made, and now there’s a sequel! We can’t be too sure it will be out as scheduled as we haven’t seen much in the press, but in the meantime, you can play the first version, which was recently remastered for PS4 and Xbox One.

20

STREET FIGHTER V (PC, PS4) RELEASE DATE: FEBRUARY 2016 There isn’t much difference between Street Fighter V but as it’s predecessors, there’s a good mix of the previous versions in here to ensure that it keeps true to what made it a cult classic. Why mess with a winning formula, right? It’s set to be a great fighting game that promises to give you hours of fun.

For those who haven’t played any of the first versions of Far Cry, Primal will be a magnificent introduction! This franchise produces possibly some of the best openworld games on the market. Although there is a big difference between the environments of Primal and previous versions, there promises to be plenty on offer for the Far Cry aficionado.

Images courtesy of Google images

(PS4, XBOX ONE)

RELEASE DATE: LATE 2016 This legendary role-playing game is in need of a strong comeback, as the last few instalments have been somewhat of a letdown. Final Fantasy XV looks like it could be the one to take this franchise back to the top. We aren’t certain when we can expect this game on South African shores, but it should arrive later this year or early 2017.

GEARS OF WAR 4 (XBOX ONE)

RELEASE DATE: JUNE/JULY 2016 Gears of War 4 is taking on a new direction with its new developers. The story has become darker, and the gameplay has changed from that fast-paced action shooter to something a bit more controlled and thought out. Let’s hope this game lives up to the hype.

PICK OF THE YEAR! UNCHARTED 4: A THIEF’S END (PS4)

RATCHET & CLANK (PS4)

RELEASE DATE: MARCH 2016

RELEASE DATE: MAY 2016

Uncharted 4 is undoubtedly our pick of the year. The first three editions were three of the best games ever to grace the PlayStation 3 platform, and the fourth instalment promises to deliver a more riveting story, better fight scenes and more action. Will this be a thief’s end? We hope not!

The new Ratchet & Clank, like most new games this year, will take a step back to what made it successful when it launched back in 2002. Although the graphics and story promise to be much more advanced, there’ll be a return to some of the original weapons and features, which launched this franchise onto the global stage.

CALLING ALL GAMERS! If you think, we’ve left something off this list of TOP 10 Games to look forward to this year, tweet us and let us know your thoughts: @onroutemag

As little as ten years ago, if anyone had offered you a car with a 1.0 litre engine, you would have laughed at them. But as technology advances and the demand for more economical, environmentally friendly cars increases, it seems every manufacturer is clamouring to produce the best small car on the road. We took a look at three of the best bite-sized hatchbacks...

THE VW UP!

T

he up! looks unlike anything we’ve ever driven before. It has sleek curves in the front with a cute, yet aggressive look to it. The back of the up! is oddly boxy and doesn’t seem like it fits on the rear of the VW, but the unique design does make you stand up and take notice. There is plenty of space in the front for the driver and passenger, but the rear seats did prove to be a tight squeeze for an adult. The back seat actually made for rather effective luggage space as the shoebox-sized boot couldn’t cope with more than one carryon bag and a laptop. Besides the lack of space inside the up!, everything else was pretty good considering the R147 000 base price tag. The 1.0 litre engine delivered a respectable 55 kW and was comfortable on the open road and around the city. Getting up a steep hill with the air-conditioning on was an interesting experience that required high engine revs but, in the end, the up! got the job done.

T

he all-new Picanto is one of the standout small hatches on the market. It blends modern and distinctive exterior styling with a fresh, trendy interior that very much speaks to the needs of its customers. The 1.0 litre manual we tested pumped out 51 kW of power, it may seem like a very small amount, but considering the size and weight of a Picanto, it’s more than ample. Interior space is, once again, a concern in the Kia, so we aren’t recommending this car for a growing family. The fact that the Picanto has four doors, unlike the up!, does mean that it’s possible to share the car with some younger members of the family, but with an equally small boot, there will come a time when you may have to consider an upgrade. The interior of the Kia is superb because everything comes standard. There is no need to cough up too much extra to get the best possible car you can. The Picanto starts at around R125 000 and goes up slightly from there.

“It blends modern and distinctive exterior styling with a fresh, trendy interior that very much speaks to the needs of its customers.”

T

he Celerio is Suzuki’s replacement for the popular Alto. The Celerio, like the Picanto, also has four doors. Back seat space in the Celerio is much bigger than the other two cars on this list – possibly an illusion or just clever design! The boot also seems to be a little bigger and better than the VW and Kia but at the same time; the 50 kWs you get from the 1.0 litre Celerio engine is a tad behind the other two. That doesn’t mean it feels like it needs help, it drives perfectly fine, it just sometimes needs a small kick. The Celerio is a comfortable, smooth cruiser and given the low price, starting at below R120 000; you would struggle to find something to compete with it.

“The Celerio is a comfortable, smooth cruiser and given the low price you would struggle to find something to compete with it.” Suzuki Celerio

SIZE ISN’T EVERYTHING! These small hatchbacks come with a few handicaps to allow them to fit into the market, but these handicaps are by no means a compromise. When you consider bang for buck, these little pocket rockets are the Davids of the motoring world. *prices correct at time of print and are subject to change.

ISTANBUL SHOPPING FESTIVAL Immerse yourself in the lively spirit of Istanbul by visiting the city during this mega shopping event. Although relatively new on the block, the ISF (going into its sixth year) has certainly caught the attention of shoppers, foodies, fun-lovers, and bargain-hunters across the globe. BONAMANZI GAME RESERVE KWAZULU NATAL

“…an ideal place to host a relaxing but productive teambuilding activity or corporate retreat.” A two-and-a-half hour drive from Durban International Airport brings you to Bonamanzi Game Reserve in the heart of Zululand. This privately-owned game reserve, which spans more than 4000 hectares, is an ideal place to host a relaxing but productive teambuilding activity or corporate retreat. If you’re able to arrive early and complete all your work in the morning, the rest of the afternoon is set up for a long but welldeserved break. At 12:30pm, there’s an informative crocodile feeding show that lets delegates participate if they want (safely, of course). This is followed by an al fresco lunch, on the viewing deck overlooking the Lalapanzi Dam, where guests can feed the turtles or just watch some of the birdlife.

Speaking of birds, there’s a guided boat cruise on the Hluhluwe River after lunch, during which visitors can learn more about the birdlife in the area – there are more than 400 species – and compete in quizzes for the chance to win a prize for the most knowledgeable team. Enjoy a twilight game drive in custom-built open vehicles through the Big 4 Game Reserve and a stop for sundowners in the Fever Tree Forest. End the day with a Bush Braai under the stars alongside the Dinizulu Dam. This includes interactive Zulu dancing. www.bonamanzi.co.za Bonamanzi Game Reserve

OLIFANTS RIVER LODGE NORTH WEST Whether you want to rough it up by camping out or go for something more luxurious like a villa that lets you sleep inside, Olifants River Lodge caters to your needs. HEARTS AND HEROES

FORTUIN FAVOURS THE BRAVE At the age of 21, volunteer rescue swimmer Robin Fortuin saved six people from drowning in the rip currents at Monwabisi Beach near Cape Town. For his bravery, Cape Town-born Fortuin was named Centrum Guardian of the Year. This is his incredible story…

Robin Fortuin - Centrum Guardian of the Year

www.onroutemag.co.za

Where did your love for swimming start?

50

As a child from the Western Cape, I was born a water baby, always swimming. My first job was working at the Muizenberg Water Slides. After that, I went to Strandfontein Lifesaving Club. While I was there, just a little way down the beach, you have the National Sea Rescue Institute (NRSI) Station 16. I used to watch them train and see what they do. And, I thought, ‘Wow, that’s amazing.’ Then I went to go and join them.

What was it like when you started at the NSRI? When you join, you don’t just start out at the NRSI as a rescue swimmer; you start right at the bottom. I don’t know if each station is different, but at our station, you

start out by cleaning, scrubbing and learning the equipment. You wash your senior’s wetsuits after training. Because we do our own maintenance, we had to clean the boathouse, the toilets, the kitchen, whatever. It’s like a rite of passage.

What’s challenging about your role? You have to be physically in shape all the time. And, at Strandfontein, we have a history of physical training. Simon’s Town, Gordon’s Bay and most of the other stations have harbours. We don’t. We have to beach-launch our vessels. This means running the vessel down the slipway, onto the beach, into the water, through the waves and then physically pulling the vessel up again. So, physical strength and stamina are crucial. Another challenge is that you have to get in the water and leave the comfort zone of the boat. That’s

where it gets even more dangerous. I’m not saying that being on the boat isn’t dangerous; I’m just saying that the danger level increases tenfold in the water.

How do you feel about being voted Centrum Guardian of the Year? I’m extremely proud. It’s a huge achievement in my life. I want to say a big thank you to my station and to all my seniors and crew who helped train and get me to the point I am today. I did the rescue with their help and with years of experience, they put into me. It just shows that the training paid off in a big way. It doesn’t matter where you come from. Anyone can be a hero.

What happened at the rescue? It was a normal day, although we had really

“It doesn’t matter where you come from. Anyone can be a hero.”

What happened when you realised there were four more people in the water? I went back in! I pushed my body to limits that I never knew I had. All of a sudden, the swell picked up from two metres to about four or five metres. Even our boat suffered some damage. I swam out to the first three and got them out. I could see the seventh guy, but he was just in the current going a

little bit faster than I could swim. He looked me straight dead in my eyes and he shook his head. And I shouted, ‘No, just hold on!’ I tried to go under. The water was so murky I couldn’t see anything. That was the last I saw of him. If it wasn’t for my torpedo buoy, I probably would have drowned myself.

LIFE BEHIND THE SCENES ON A WILDLIFE RESERVE EASTERN CAPE

Modgaji is a privately owned game reserve and rehabilitation centre where abandoned, injured and rescued cheetah and leopard find not just a home, but also a new lease on life! Founders of this amazing conservation project, Will and Sharon van Duyn, have been active in cheetah conservation for two decades. They possess an immense passion for the big cats and are entirely dedicated to safeguarding their existence. The reintroduction of tame cheetah involves daily training to, once again, become independent and skilled hunters and eventually return to the wild. People with a passion for wildlife and conservation are welcome to join the Modgaji Conservation Programme to experience life behind the scenes on a wildlife reserve and do meaningful, hands-on work. From gap year students, volunteers, anyone on a career break, sabbatical or holiday can assist in restoring this beautiful landscape to how nature intended it to be. www.modgaji.co.za

SHOPPING FOR A NEW CAR?

Here are some of the latest cutting- edge safety features to look out.

This technology is already a safety feature in most new vehicles. Sensors at the wheel alert you if the air pressure in the tyres is too low with an audible warning, a light on the instrument panel, or both.

Adaptive cruise control

Modern cruise control goes beyond just maintaining a constant speed. Thanks to sensors and the use of radar, cruise control can now adjust the throttle and brakes to keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of you if there are changes in traffic speed. If the system senses a potential collision, it typically will brake hard and tighten the seatbelts. Once it knows the lane is clear, or traffic has sped up, it will return your car to its original cruising speed. Of course, you may override the system by touching the brakes.

Blind spot detection

This technology is designed to alert you to cars or objects in your blind spot during driving or parking, or both. Usually, it will respond when you put on your turn signal; if it detects something in the way, it may flash a light in your mirror, cause the seat or steering wheel to vibrate, or sound an alarm. This is more of a short-range detection system.

Lane-departure warning

This is similar to blind spot technology but with more range. It judges an approaching vehicle’s speed and distance to warn you of potential danger if you change lanes. It can also warn if it determines your car is wandering out of the lane, which could be useful if you become distracted. This could come in the form of a vibration through the seat or steering wheel, or an alarm.

Rollover prevention

If the system senses a potential rollover (such as if you whip around a corner too fast or swerve sharply), it will apply the brakes and modulate the throttle as needed to help you maintain control.

Occupant-sensitive dual-stage airbags

While driver, passenger and side curtain airbags are nothing new, sensing airbags certainly are! New technology can now sense the

different sizes and weights of occupants as well as seatbelt usage, abnormal seating position (such as reaching for the radio or bending to pick something off the floor), rear-facing child seats and even vehicle speed.

Emergency brake assist This brake technology is different in that it recognizes when the driver makes a panic stop, and will apply additional brake pressure to help shorten the stopping distance. It’s often called brake assist, although BMW, for example, refers to it as Dynamic Brake Control.

Adaptive headlights

Night vision can be executed in different forms, such as infrared headlamps or thermal imaging cameras. But, the goal is the same: to help you see farther down the road. Adaptive headlights follow the direction of the vehicle (bending the light as you go around corners). They may also be speed-sensitive (changing beam length or height), or compensate for ambient light.

Images courtesy of Shutterstock

Tire pressure monitoring

Rear-view camera

Reversing your car has graduated from side mirrors tilting down, to real-time viewing. The latest tech involves a camera that works with the navigation system to provide a wide-open shot of what’s happening behind you to help with parking or hooking up a trailer.

Emergency response

There are a variety of ways today’s and future vehicles will handle an emergency situation. For example, DaimlerChrysler’s Enhanced Accident Response System (EARS) turns on interior lighting, unlocks doors and shuts off fuel when airbags deploy; while Volkswagen’s also switches on the hazards and disconnects the battery terminal. BMW’s Assist alerts their response centre of the accident and makes crash details available to emergency personnel.

Many of these new safety features are not yet standardized. Be sure to check the owner’s manual to understand how your specific car works!

TOLL PLAZA UPGRADES Upgrades have been underway since the beginning of the year to toll plazas along the Bakwena N1N4 highways. Construction will see additional new lanes added to alleviate increased traffic volumes, and will be completed by December 2017.

“The additional lanes will be worked on and completed without any closures of existing lanes at the individual plazas, which means that the existing flow of traffic will be maintained,” says Bakwena Chief Executive Officer, Graeme Blewitt.

“The planned investment value of the project is approximately R160 million, and we are confident that the upgrades will be completed according to the projected timetable. However, we ask that road users practice caution when approaching relevant toll plazas during the construction period.”

My best advice to any local roadtrippers is…

The Western Cape.

The best place I have ever travelled to was…

My ultimate travel companion of all time would be…

The Amalphi Coast in Italy.

My wife Lisa and son Jayden.

Not a lot of people know this about me, but… I am actually shy in public and tend to be low key.

I never travel without… A pair of Rocka headphones.

My best/most unique/ interesting experience while on the road/tour has been… Stopping at small towns where people are really surprised to see me and excited to meet me!

The most memorable response to my music by a fan has been… A couple proposed to one another on stage at one of my concerts.

If I were not a musician, I would choose to be… A painter.
