THE SCHIESZL WINERY BUDAPEST Join Konrád Schieszl and his family just outside Budapest for a hearty Swabian dinner of Mangalica ham, fresh cheese, and fiery pálinka (spirit), and hear their spine-tingling story behind Schieszl Winery, which served as a haven for a Jewish family friend fleeing Nazi persecution during World War II.
www.onroutemag.co.za
The friend, and his family, hid in one of the cellar’s giant wine barrels; today reincarnated as the doorway to the restaurant. When the war finally ended, the Swabian people, who’d relocated from Germany many years before, were forced to return to their country of origin, with just 24 hours to make the move.

Budapest, Hungary
Happily, their Jewish friend, who had become a very successful lawyer under the communist regime, helped the Schieszls eventually return to Hungary and buy back their treasured home allowing them to do what they do best – make wine! Today, Konrád Schieszl is a successful restauranteur and winner of several gold and silver medal wines. Spend a few hours with his family visiting the kitchen, wine cellars, and enjoying wonderful home-grown produce, including jams, hams, and cheeses.

FOODIE ADVENTURES
MEET THE TELLIS… ITALY Located on the Alpine Lake Maggiore, Isola Madre has been linked to the Borromeo family since 1502 and is today home to Ristorante La Piratera, owned by the Telli family. Guests will join Sr Telli and his family to hear all about the origins of the Pirate Tower before joining him for dinner The tower of the restaurant is 800 years old, founded as a lookout post in the 13th century and repurposed for several uses over the years, but not least as a pirate hideaway for future Prince Vitaliano X Borromeo Arese and his friends at the beginning of the 20th century.
Getting to Isola Madre Island is an adventure itself, as you will board a private boat to cross the waters of Lake Maggiore into the welcoming arms of Sr Telli who will meet you on arrival with a tasty aperitif. You won’t need to be Jolly or Roger to enjoy the tasty Italian specialties the Tellis are likely to serve up. Enjoy traditional risotto cooked with ‘Gavi’, fried fish from the lake and melanzane alla parmigiana. Yo, ho, ho…
Fond of his little pirate’s cove, the prince agreed to allow Sr Telli’s mother to open a VIP restaurant to serve traditional Italian specialities on the spot and the name Ristorante La Piratera was born. So too was Sr Telli himself – would you believe in the actual restaurant! Traditional Melanzane

FORAGING WITH OONAGH… IRELAND Close to Ireland’s Cliffs of Moher lies Barrtrá Seafood Restaurant, renowned for its home cooking and locally sourced produce, the restaurant is run by Paul and Theresa O’Brien, whose family moved from Limerick City to be close to the sea. Before settling down for lunch, guests will be taken on a wild food walk along the beach by Theresa’s friend Oonagh, whose proud motto is, “grow, find, cook, eat!” Consequently, you’ll quite likely end up eating some of the food you’ve foraged! Oonagh is an interesting character; a horticulture tutor by day, she sells her own organic produce in the local market and has a huge interest in food and sharing it through her food blog – www.wildkitchen.ie

DAE YE SPEIK SCOTS? SCOTLAND Join Fergus and Gregor Wood on their 300-acre historical working hill farm Ledard, on the shores of Loch Ard in the picturesque Scottish Trossachs. Your arrival is greeted by none other than a rousing bagpipe serenade and the very friendly pack of 14 sheepdogs before being escorted to McGregor’s Barn, dating back to the 17th century.
Scottish Trossachs
You’ll hear all about their life on the land, local clans, and their hero Rob Roy, who came of age in the barn in 1689, just three months after he fought on the Jacobite side at the Battle of Killiecrankie. Against a backdrop of clan weapons and banners hanging from the walls of the barn, you’ll indulge in hearty Highland lamb dishes, warming whisky made the Scottish way and traditional ceilidh music. Fergus has a close connection with traditional music as the founder, manager, and player in the Kinlochard Ceilidh Band, one of the top traditional dance bands in Scotland that has played all over the world. With the help of his wife Francesca, he also manages the Scottish Sheepdog School, which is based at Ledard Farm. His son, Gregor is recognised as one of the finest presenters of Burns poetry and is an expert on Rob Roy and the weapons of the Highlands clans. Truly an interesting clan.

TORRO, TORRO… SPAIN Travel to the charming, whitewashed village of Gerena near Seville and the 625-hectare La Mirandilla Ranch, naturally protected from the outside world by an archway of prickly pears, and one of the most famous bullraising ranches in Spain. Meet the Marquis de Albaserrada and his “adopted” son Fabrice Torrito (rather appropriately, his surname means little bull) who helps to run the Finca La Mirandilla Ranch. Learn all about the Albaserrada’s bullraising history and meet his bulls as you enjoy tasty, locally made sangria. You’ll learn how the bulls are treated as Olympians and about bullfighting traditions before sitting down to a delicious Andalusian meal including smoky churrasco chicken, pork, and local chorizo.

It’s a scene straight out of the Sound of Music. Head to charming Faistenauer Farm just outside of Salzburg and meet the Klaushofer family who’ve lived here since 1874. Their son Simon and wife Maria eventually took over the farm in 1894.

The farm is organic and produces not only cheese and butter, but also fresh bread, honey from their bees, and elderflower products from their own elderflower bushes. Simon and Brigitte Klaushofer have worked on the farm since the nineties and are proud to show off the day-to-day farm activities and all their family members, including the cows and bees. You’ll enjoy a delicious meal of home-made Austrian farm specialties including frittatensuppe, turkey escalope, pork roast, and to end it all off, a triumphant cheese strudel with vanilla sauce.

FIND A SPIRITUAL RETREAT TO SUIT YOU

By Dawn Jorgensen If recent trends are to be believed, the world seems to have come full circle as the desire for reviving retreats gain popularity. Tourists are now seeking out soulful experiences that take them beyond the realms of superficial pleasures to a place where the focus is on health, contemplation and being close to nature.
A
fter more than ten years of being obsessively attached to my cellphone, I stepped completely off the grid a few months ago and headed into the bush, in a bit of a mild panic, in an attempt to go cold turkey. I initially obsessed about all the emails I’d miss and the social media updates I wouldn’t be able to do. Yet after the first day of hopeful stares at my phone, I put it away and began to relax into the experience.
to reflect and contemplate life. They offer weekend retreats and simple Buddhist teachings as part of their package.
It allowed me to take note of the details, savour the moment and become wholeheartedly consumed by all that was on offer. I appreciated the privilege of being in the moment. The experience became more introspective, as even though I was in a small group, silence was respected and most of my thoughts remained my own. My senses were able to reconnect with nature, heightened and intensified by being distraction-free. I can just imagine if I’d been able to add a few health treatments and a bit of meditation to the mix, how perfect it would have been.
In South Africa, most spiritual retreats are paired with beautiful settings that offer comfortable accommodation and alternative therapies... and the opportunity to get up close and personal with nature.
In South Africa, most spiritual retreats are paired with beautiful settings that offer comfortable accommodation and alternative therapies, meditation, wellbeing workshops, Reiki, spiritual guidance and the opportunity to get up close and personal with nature. Personally, it is only recently that I learnt to disconnect in order to reconnect with myself. Whatever your preference may be, we are also blessed with a variety of options: The Buddhist Retreat Centre in Ixopo is a well-known destination for those wanting
Kurisa Moya Nature Lodge in Limpopo combines time spent in nature with powerful healing therapies such as craniosacral therapy, a system of alternative medicine intended to relieve pain and tension by gentle manipulations of the skull which helps one to shift negative energy, a valuable exercise to any individual!
Boondocks Mountain Lodge in Mpumalanga facilitates the Transformation Game aimed at advanced personal introspection. The game under supervision brings great understanding to key life issues as you move along your ‘life path’, exploring your intention and gaining a better appreciation for your strengths and weaknesses. Silent Retreats are also popular with those who like to embrace simplicity while listening to their own heart and body with no outside
interference. It’s a brave thing to do, having only your own company and conversation and is most a retrospective, healing and highly recommended experience. For a retreat with a difference set deep in nature, you could opt to go off the grid for a digital detox and join a walking trail in the Kruger National Park or escape to a remote nature reserve where hiking trails, mountain streams and brightly starlit skies will remind of what really matters. Art in Nature Retreats are a playful way to express and de-stress with plein air painting allowing you to borrow the colours straight from the outdoors, with forest walks, singing and laughing lessons as well as story telling all on offer. Even time just sitting in the garden listening to the birds and watching the clouds pass overhead, is a replenishing gift. By definition the conducted retreat is carefully structured as a whole, with attendants expected to join classes and group activities from the first day. This can be interchanged or extended by a Self Retreat, which allows your day to flow much more freely, following your own scheduling of meditation, walks and activities. The wonderful thing is that all of these retreats whilst spiritually based, are not religion-specific, and anyone and everyone is welcome no matter what faith they belong to. It’s all about pausing for long enough to give back to ourselves, to our body and mind, spending time in nature and restoring balance to our souls.

“Hanging out of helicopters, racing off-road in my Pajero, trail running or hiking through rough terrain lugging the necessary gear have become my weekend activities, and fuel my passion even further!
I differentiate myself by focusing on the sharp end of events, telling the story visually and capturing the moments as the action unfolds. I am driven by the combination of adrenaline in chasing the
leaders, dealing with top international athletes, and the adventure of just getting into often remote locations to get the right shot. I have seconds to decide what I want to do with a shot, and very seldom (if ever) get the opportunity to set up a shot. It’s a thrilling game of hit and miss! Hanging out of helicopters, racing off-road in my Pajero, trail running or hiking through rough terrain lugging the necessary gear have become my weekend activities, and fuel my passion even further! It is a privilege to be able to race through areas few people ever get to see, soaking up the scenery from hidden perspectives and bringing it to the public eye through my lens. The gratification I feel when I know I have nailed a shot is like a drug; and the more unique the moment, the greater the dose.

P
hotography has always been a hobby of mine, but a major leap in my photography was in fact the by-product of using professional photographers as part of the service offering of my marketing company, Advendurance, which provides media services to mountain biking events companies. I had the opportunity to learn first-hand from some of the best shooters in the game, comparing my shots to theirs and building my confidence over time. My interest catapulted me into a niche market, which I carved and crafted into what is now a very specialised service.

Louwrens Mahoney Enduro Race
Can you describe your particular brand of adventure photography? Real and in the moment, I can’t afford to spend any time on post processing so I’ve got to be able to get the shot right first time and with no time to set up either. I also prefer shooting people that aren’t aware of the camera so the moments are more natural.
What attracted you to this particular genre of photography? I am a bit of an adrenaline junkie, I love sports and used to compete so being so close to the action still gives me that kick I need to keep things interesting.
When did you realise your hobby had evolved into something profitable? I have always been snapping away and I guess the 10 000 hour rule applies here because people eventually offered to pay for images and it kind of just grew from there. Jeep Warrior Race
What personal qualities do you think one needs to be a good outdoor adventure photographer? You need to be willing to go where nobody else will, to get that unique shot that stands out and you always need to push the envelope, if you aren’t growing and challenging yourself your competition will always be catching up.
Do you ever feel separated from an experience by being behind your lens?
“The gratification I feel when I know I have nailed a shot is like a drug; the more unique the moment, the greater the dose.”
www.onroutemag.co.za
I actually feel deeper engrossed in the action because it is “even more in your face”, but I can say that I have been too close to some of the action before because you get a false sense of security behind the lens.

How do you stay ahead of the pack in capturing the shot nobody else will have? I do in-depth research for each sport so I understand the intricacies and you develop a knack for being at the right place at the right time, to quote Gary Player “the more I practise the luckier I get”.
What have you crossed off and what still remains on your personal adventure bucket list?
www.onroutemag.co.za
Wow my bucket list is varied but I would risk saying that the Migration and Ngorongoro were my wildlife highlights and sports-wise the Dakar rally and Tour de France are on my hitlist, and soon I hope!

What has been your biggest lesson learnt through your work as a photographer? I would say that there is always more to learn and new ways to do old things. Never get comfortable I guess sums it up. Take the leap with the Jeep Warrior race

MOST EPIC GAMES EXPECTED THIS YEAR Here’s a list of the very latest releases that’ll keep gamers glued for days!
#
1
DARK SOULS III
Dark Souls III is supposedly the last instalment in the series. The developers have reportedly created a game that not only adapts to your gameplay quicker than you can adapt to the game, but it also delivers a harrowing story with characters and monsters to keep you glued to the game for hours. The environments you play through change regularly keeping your mind fresh and entertained as you progress through the vivid world set in front of you. The game is due out in the second quarter of 2016.

FOR HONOUR
For Honour was first introduced to the public in 2015 as a sword fighting multiplayer campaign based game. For Honour is not expected to break any sales records, but has been specifically designed for the diehard gamers who’re looking for a pure gaming experience and a very unique story. There will be a single-player campaign as well. For Honour will be available in the coming months.
RESIDENT EVIL 2: THE REMAKE
A remake of the PlayStation One classic, this is one of the most anticipated survival horror games at the moment. There is no set release date as yet, but in recent weeks, all the speculation around the production of this game has been confirmed. The team that has been put together to produce Resident Evil 2 – the Remake, have worked on some of the most successful titles in modern gaming. This should be a nostalgic and eerie walk down memory lane.

MAFIA III
Mafia III takes the genré in a completely new direction. Splitting away from the stereotypical Italian mob game, this game focuses on a new character, with a host of flaws and stories you wouldn’t expect from a title of this nature. The main character is an orphan and Vietnam War veteran who joins the black mob, becoming embroiled in the dark underbelly of New Orleans in the 1960’s. The game is expected out at the end of the year.
5
DOOM
Anyone who played computer games in the 90s and early 2000s will know DOOM. The fact that they have decided to make a new version of this hit game is creating a huge buzz in the gaming world. It promises to deliver more fear, destruction and gore, plus more monsters and better gaming environments than have ever been seen in this genre before. If you are as excited as we are about the release of DOOM, you don’t have that long to wait. The game is due for release in North America in May, so we can expect it in South Africa a few months after that.

New VW Caravelle
Cars come and go; some impress while others fail to make an impact. But iconic cars like the Volkswagen Beetle, the Mini Cooper, and the Ford Mustang have stood the test of time - strong enough to inspire a new generation of drivers while still providing a nostalgic trip down memory lane.
I
t was with much excitement and a little trepidation that we were able to put the brand new VW Caravelle Kombi through its paces – a real blast from the past that also fits comfortably in a modern age of family motoring.
their sheer popularity with the working class. The new Kombi sets a high benchmark in the family transportation category, but while testing, we couldn’t help but notice that the high price takes it out of the hands of a lot of families.
The Kombi and the Kombi Caravelle have been written into motoring folklore through their use in iconic TV shows, advertisements and
The very basic Kombi starts at a shade under R500 000 and can move up to the Caravelle Highline which costs just under
R880 000! The sad thing about the ‘People’s Car’, is that most people today can’t shell out that kind of money for a fully loaded family carrier. Those that can afford the bottom of the range version are going to feel slightly short-changed when it comes to performance; for what we would consider half a million rand of luxury. The one thing the Caravelle does have going for it is that
www.onroutemag.co.za
VW CARAVELLE KOMBI 25
compared to the competition, it does stand out and certainly holds its own in a niche but very competitive market segment. The version we tested, the 2.0 BiTDI Caravelle Highline DSG, had a very nippy engine that delivered greatly on performance. It pumped out a respectable 132 kW of power but really impressed with its pulling power while fully loaded. The 400 Nm of torque out of the 2.0-litre diesel engine meant you never felt wanting under any situation on the road, including the open road as well as meandering traffic jams around town. The seven-speed automatic transmission was smooth and changed seamlessly, allowing the engine to get the most optimal performance no matter what was asked of it.
“…a real blast from the past that also fits comfortably in a modern age of family motoring.”
Golden oldie Carvelle
OTHER CLASSICS THAT HAVE MADE SUCCESSFUL COMEBACKS The Mini Cooper The classic British hatchback, made famous by movies like the Italian Job and Mr. Bean, is now one of the most successful hatchbacks in the modern age!
The standard safety features on the Caravelle read like an overqualified CEO’s business card, with more acronyms than we could mention in a standard review. It’s good to know that there are things like ABS, EBD, and MCB to protect your most valuable cargo. There are also enough airbags in the Caravelle to protect the family should the VW ever end up in a collision. But it’s really in the interior of the Caravelle that you see what your money buys you! With a total of seven seats, two swivel seats in the second row and a three-seater bench in back, the Caravelle caters for large families or a very small army of people. The driver and front passenger are also well catered for with upfront seats, both comfortable and practical.
www.onroutemag.co.za
Other interior features worth mentioning include a fantastic climate control system, speed sensitive power steering, cruise control (a real winner when you have kids) and an easy to use multifunction-colour-display with Bluetooth.
26
The really great thing about the Caravelle, which we feel would make it worth the high price, is the ‘Heritage’ dual-colour paint. The Jeep Wrangler Originally made by the Americans as a go anywhere, do anything, never say die off-roader. The current Jeep Wrangler is widely regarded as one of the best off-road vehicles available.
The VW Beetle One of the all-time highest selling cars, the original Beetle only stopped production in Mexico within the last decade. Made iconic by movies like Herbie, the Beetle’s latest version is still popular amongst young professionals.
The Fiat 500 Unlike the Mini Cooper, this mini-hatchback returned to modern motoring as a mini motorcar. Jeremy Clarkson actually rated the new Fiat 500 as one of the best hatchbacks ever made.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE 2016 started off with reports of drought stricken areas throughout South Africa, the North West Province being no exception. Swartruggens lies along the N4 Platinum Highway in the North West Province and is one of the communities that has been deeply affected by the ongoing drought.
Since the end of November 2015, Bakwena has been assisting the Kgetlengrivier Municipality with two water tankers that have delivered more than 8 million litres to the Swartruggens Borelelo community. They have repaired a valve to an existing borehole as well as drilled a new borehole along the N4 thereby providing further access to clean drinking water.

Bakwena also got involved in the Jacaranda Project Water Drop Campaign & Wheel Well’s Eco Wash fundraiser which saw water being delivered to the North West & Limpopo provinces.
Bakwena is concerned about the wellbeing of communities along the N4 route and regularly engages with residents regarding road safety, health and environmental matters. It has been devastating to see the effects of the drought on the town. Bakwena will continue to do their utmost to ensure that they have enough clean drinking water for their families for as long as the drought continues.

160 MILLION TO BE INVESTED IN PLAZA UPGRADES ALONG THE BAKWENA N1N4 TOLL ROAD Bakwena holds a 30-year concession contract with The South African National Roads Agency SOC Limited (SANRAL) to manage a 385km route which covers the N4 from Pretoria through Rustenburg to the Botswana border, and the N1 from Pretoria to Bela Bela in Limpopo. The Bakwena N1N4 Toll concession is the central link of a freeway connecting southern Africa’s east and west coasts. Bakwena has commenced with planned upgrades to toll plazas along the Bakwena N1N4 route. These upgrades are being implemented as a consequence of increased traffic volumes along the corridor and are aimed at increasing plaza capacity through the addition of new lanes at the plazas. Construction of the expanded toll plazas will be completed by December 2017. The first plaza to benefit from the upgrade is Zambesi, where work has already started to create two extra lanes at the on/off ramps. Once Zambesi is complete, Stormvoel, Pumulani, Doornpoort, Brits and Marikana will be the next plazas to be upgraded. These upgrades will see, two extra lanes at Pumulani

and Doornpoort, one additional lane in each direction at Brits and Marikana plazas, and one lane at the on/off at Stormvoel plaza. Work has also started on the upgrade to the Wallmannsthal On Ramp to add an additional Class 1 ETC lane to alleviate the congestion during the morning peak. The investment value of the project is approximately R160 million over the two year period and the upgrade is expected to increase capacity at toll plazas for road users with or without e-tags, improving throughput during high traffic volume periods. Bakwena remains committed to providing a safe and pleasant travel experience for all road users on the N1N4 route. For any construction related queries, please contact Bakwena on 011 519 0400.

Crown Coffee has a unique and interesting history and origin. Started up in 2003 by two brothers-in-law, in the hills high above Tzaneen where some coffee plants were found growing wild in the forest. These coffee plants were being spread by the monkey population and Crown Coffee used these plants as the basis for its plantation. It is the only Coffee Estate in South Africa above 1000 metres in altitude, producing speciality coffee with no pesticides or herbicides used in the farming process.

THE RIEL RENAISSANCE
One of the oldest dance forms in South Africa is making a comeback, uplifting local children, and shining on the world’s stage. Troupe manager and dance coach Floris Smith shares more... Die Nuwe Graskoue Trappers at Bushmans
What is Riel dancing? It’s a rural dance created by the workers of the greater Cape Colony of old, including the Winelands, Garden Route, Kalahari, and Karoo. It has its roots in the storytelling dances of the Khoi and San. The music has come a long way since then – it’s rhythmic, fast, and fun. You can’t help but dance when you hear it!
www.onroutemag.co.za
Why do you think the dance is still popular today?
46
There isn’t much for youth to do in remote rural areas, so it’s mainly danced in these rural communities. When ATKV took the initiative to launch a project and host a championship, this inspired many to take part. Lots of workshops and training sessions created mass interest at schools and other communities, and the opportunity of becoming champions was also motivational for the kids and dancers.
When you are not coaching, what are you doing?
as with any projects. Because the dancers are based at villages around Wupperthal, getting them all at a central point for training and rehearsals is sometimes challenging due to the transport and road constraints (mainly handmade rough gravel roads).

DLINZA FOREST AND AERIAL BOARDWALK A MAGICAL FOREST WALK KWAZULU-NATAL
It’s certainly rare to come across an indigenous forest in the heart of an urban area – but we found it! Wrapped entirely by the town of Eshowe, the 250-hectare Dlinza Forest is a natural attraction criss-crossed with wonderful walking trails and picnic spots. But the most rewarding way to explore it is via its 10-metre high aerial boardwalk. Built of natural timber above the forest floor, it extends 127 metres culminating in a breathtaking 20-metre high viewing platform, which emerges above the canopy of trees. From here, you’ll be captivated by magnificent panoramic views over the forest and countryside, leading all the way down to the coast. The best time to visit is in the early morning when the abundant birdlife echoes their chorus across the valley. The forest is also home to a number of indigenous trees, insects, and precious flowers. Keep a look out for its most endangered creature, the Dlinza Forest Pinwheel, an unusual snail with bristles radiating out from the edge of its shell, found nowhere else on Earth!

This natural dolomite sinkhole is the deepest of its kind in the South African interior! It’s also an outstanding cave diving spot for experienced divers to reach depths of up to 70 metres. Wondergat, or Mystery Hole as it’s known, is one of South Africa’s most popular inland dive sites, but also one of its most dangerous.
48
Thousands of years ago, it was a water-filled cavern until the roof caved in and left a magnificent hole filled with water. Walking down the 35 irregular steps fully kitted up is no joke, so being fit is a great advantage. Torches are recommended, as the bottom can be very dark. Keep a lookout for the Banded Tilapia, which is endemic to Wondergat and won’t be found at any other fresh water hole in the world. Other fishes to look out for are the Sharptooth Catfish, Southern Mouthbrooder as well as freshwater shrimps and crabs. Best part is that it’s not your typical museum experience, with the all-too-common information overload of disruptive displays and audio guides – this one maintains a stand-alone spotlight on beautiful cars. The curators also rotate exhibitions, so it remains fresh and ever-changing. We bet once you’ve been, you’ll go again! www.fmm.co.za
ANVIL BREWERY
HANDCRAFTED DRAFTS AND HEARTY PUB FARE DULLSTROOM A short drive to the edge of town is well worth it when you experience this owner-run gem! Theo de Beer and his wife Sarie are passionate about their small brewing business that specialises in brewing European style ales, all handcrafted by Theo himself! “A lot of sweat and physical activity goes into the creation of our babies,” says Theo. The brewery produces a Blonde Ale, a Pale Ale, and a Baltic Porter which Theo calls his ‘girlie ale’. Theo also makes seasonal beers like dark, rich beer for those icy cold days in Dullstroom. Go and savour a local draft and tuck into the hearty pub grub on offer, including dishes such as smoked trout and scrambled egg, wholesome veggie soup, trout quiche, and a German sausage platter. Don’t leave without trying their generous helping of boozy cake! www.anvilbrewery.com

SA’S FIRST CUSTOMIZED CONSUMER BREATHALYSER “Of all road deaths in South Africa, approximately 58% are related to alcohol and that is a chilling fact.”
The In Support of Arrive Alive breathalyser will be accessible to all South African road users at a low cost, and for every purchase a donation will be made to www.ArriveAlive.co.za to help the platform continue its advocacy work on road safety. “Of all road deaths in South Africa, approximately 58% are related to alcohol and that is a chilling fact,” said Angus MacArthur, General Manager at Alcohol Breathalysers. The high-end personal digital breathalyser can be used up to 1 000 times without the need for recalibration. The gadget informs the user of their blood alcohol content and beyond that, opens up a universe of knowledge that truly empowers drivers. Information such as the effect of alcohol consumption on the body, understanding how units of alcohol are quantified, and other road safety concerns like rights and responsibilities of road users and road safety legislation, policy and enforcement.
“Of all road deaths in South Africa, approximately 58% are related to alcohol and that is a chilling fact,” The In Support of Arrive Alive breathalyser detects alcohol content in breath and uses that result to compute blood alcohol content (BAC%). To effectively use the device it requires a deep breath and blowing into the mouthpiece until the device beeps. The breathalyser calculates a reading and the result is displayed on the screen. As stipulated by road traffic legislation, a reading below 0.05% Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) indicates that one is safe to drive and any reading from 0.05% BAC and above indicates a high blood alcohol level and is therefore illegal to drive. The SAPS and traffic police officers can and will arrest any driver who registers a reading of 0.05% BAC and above. “We are excited to be bringing this life-saving device to South Africa. We believe that this breathalyser will empower road users by equipping them with accurate knowledge of their alcohol consumption before any attempt to drive.” concluded MacArthur.
MORE ABOUT THE DEVICE The very easy to use, reliable, reusable and highly sensitive hand held personal breathalyser uses microcomputer control with a 3 digit LCD display, audio cues and a flow sensor to check that enough air has been blown to calculate an accurate result. The device offers 1 000 tests, provides a calibration reminder when required, has large bright display, is matt black in colour, utilises a mouthpiece / straw and includes a carry case. Suitable for personal use to test one’s own breathe for alcohol concentration. The In Support of Arrive Alive breathalyser is available from www. breathalysers.co.za, www.ArriveAlive.co.za and www.takealot.com

DISTRACTED DRIVING: ARE YOU GUILTY? Images courtesy of Shutterstock
We’re all guilty to some degree of eating, drinking, grooming, adjusting the radio, or talking to passengers while behind the wheel. However, texting while driving is regarded as the riskiest. Why? According to the National Roads and Motorists Association, drivers who regularly send text messages spend up to 400 percent more time with their eyes on their phone instead of on the road. The act itself is considered a visual, manual, and cognitive diversion, which means no attention is being paid to the road! And, still the stats remain that close on HALF of all South African drivers text while driving! For many of us, our car has become our mobile office, so changing these bad habits can be difficult. However, this is not a strong enough case for putting yourself and others at risk. Make driving safely your priority while in your vehicle. It’s a matter of being disciplined and appreciating the risks involved. Passengers can also help drivers remain focussed by reminding them when their attention is not on the road and assisting them with anything they may need.
Cash is King Using cash will make you think longer and harder before letting it go. Plastic is impersonal - you can swipe your fortune away on a credit or debit card without even noticing it. When you physically hand over rands and cents, you’re more likely to feel the pain of how much you’re actually spending.
GREAT SAVING TIPS FOR YOUR YEAR-END HOLIDAY Don’t wait until the end of the year to realize you can’t afford the holiday you deserve!
Shopaholics Anonymous When the shopping bug bites, try shopping online. You’ll notice when you load up your virtual shopping cart, you have no choice but to review your potential purchases. This often leads to either changing your mind or discarding certain items. You can save hundreds by taking your time and sometimes, on second thought, not buying anything at all.

WITH DJ ZINHLE
BEHIND THE WHEEL [Q& A]
BEHIND THE WHEEL... This hot musical talent stepped onto the scene when DJing was still very much a man’s world. Her passion, when she’s not behind the turntables, is to empower talented young women to conquer careers in the entertainment industry. The biggest misconception about a career as a DJ is… That it’s easy and that we just party all the time. People don’t seem to think that being a DJ requires real hard work!
I would like to be known in the music industry as someone who… Changed how women are perceived in the entertainment and business industries. I want to be the woman who made it possible for other women to start believing in their dreams. I am an advocate for women’s success and I will play my part.
When I’m having a bad day, I love to… Be alone and read an inspiring book.
Things that make me laugh are… My best friend, Nomndeni. We share a lot of memories and our values are aligned, so it’s like I know what she is
going to say before she says it.
Not a lot of people know this about me, but… I love being at home; I’m not as outgoing as people expect a DJ to be.
DJ Zinhle
The best places I have ever travelled to are…
My biggest pet peeve is…
Lazy people! They usually blame others for New York and Hong Kong - I love the buzz and their lack of progress. I hate excuses and lazy the hustling culture. people seem to have all the excuses.
My goal for this year is…
“This is the era of women empowerment and women need to realise this…”
To grow the watch and bracelet brand that I launched three years ago - erabydjzinhle. Our slogan is ‘It’s Our Time’ and the brand is about reminding women all over the world that this is the era of women empowerment and women need to realise this so they can use their time effectively. And, of course, I’d like to release more music!
A place on my bucket list that I have yet to see is…
All South African’s should experience…
Japan. A lot of DJs have told me that playing a set in Japan is one of the most amazing experiences and I believe them! I also want to experience their fashion culture.
Their own country - explore! I believe there are a lot of hidden treasures in Mpumalanga. www.djzinhle.com
