To really experience the life and culture of the Zambians, don’t miss out on a day trip to the city of Livingstone; Colourful, vibrant and alive with activity.
OF THE VIC FALLS www.onroutemag.co.za
I have been fortunate enough to have seen the magnificent Grand Canyon, skied on the French Alps, walked up an active volcano on Reunion Island and that was truly astounding, but there is something extraordinarily special about experiencing both sides of the Victoria Falls!
Aerial view of the Victoria Falls
8
THE ADVENTURE BEGINS As we came in to land at the newly refurbished Victoria Falls Airport, I caught a glimpse of the Falls from the air inducing nothing short of a shiver of pure delight – how exciting it was to be in David Livingston’s piece of paradise. We were picked up by Love for Africa, a superb local tour operator based in Zimbabwe. Blessing Munyenyiwa started this company six years ago and for him, and his team, nothing was too much trouble. I was seriously impressed with the knowledge of the staff and their friendliness. They assisted us with our accommodation, activities and transport requirements. If you’re looking for a great experience of the area with a good lashing of local spirit, I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend them. A short, 20 minute scenic drive later we arrived at the edge of the Zambezi River for our 10 minute boat journey to the Victoria Falls River Lodge. The boat ride was wonderful as we unexpectedly saw a herd of elephants on the embankment and a pod of hippos just lazing around in the Zambezi. And, in the distance all the while you could see the spray of the mighty Zambezi.

The Victoria Falls River Lodge is the first privately owned lodge to be situated in the Zambezi National Park. From the moment we arrived until the moment we left, we were treated like royalty. The attention to detail and the personalised service was an experience of opulence, to say the least. We stayed in one of the eight king luxury tents (which are all river facing) with a private deck overlooking the Zambezi River, each with its own private plunge pool. In addition, there are five king luxury tented family suites with adjoining children’s room. This family friendly lodge is a fantastic opportunity for little ones to learn about nature and wildlife. For an exciting experience they can hop aboard the Junior Discoverers Drive. Facilities include a rim-flow infinity pool with the greatest views of the Zambezi River and a spa. There are also sunrise and sunset cruises as well as morning and evening game drives on offer.
The Victoria Falls River Lodge
A ZIMBABWEAN ICON The Victoria Falls Safari Lodge is superb and boasts one of the country’s top restaurants. The Boma Dinner is an absolute must-do experience as it offers guests a traditional African buffet where you can delight your palate with foods like kudu, buffalo and warthog. The drum show is enthralling and everyone gets to beat their own drum. You just can’t help being captivated by the celebration. It is a tradition to eat a Mopane Worm, just close your eyes and be brave – you’ll receive a certificate to prove that you did it.
Our stay at the Victoria Falls Safari Suites was a great experience! Perfect for families. Next door is the Victoria Falls Safari Club which is more for the extinguished guest or the discerning traveller who prefers utter comfort and privacy.

Activities for children include a nature walk and seeing the bird hide is a firm favourite. Witnessing the awe and amazement of a child who spots their first cheetah and learns the names of countless “goggas” is indeed a rewarding experience.

CROSSING OVER A quick 10 minute drive from the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge to the border and five minutes later we have crossed over to the Zambian side. Upon arrival at the AVANI Victoria Falls Lodge, we were greeted by cultural dances with huge smiles and given the most delicious iced tea seasoned with cinnamon and sugar. Delicious! To get exceptionally close to the cascades of water, you need to visit the Zambian side of the Falls. I enjoyed the wilder feel of the Zambian side. Here the slightly cheaper Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park gets you right up close to the rushing water. Feel your heart race during the drenching crossing of the Knife-Edge Bridge. If the Zambezi is in full flood, be prepared to get thoroughly soaked as the spray seems to come at you from all directions. If there’s less water, take the steep footpath down to the Boiling Pot – a huge whirlpool at the base of the Falls. One of the advantages of staying at this property is that it’s an easy five minute walk to the Victoria Falls, and complimentary for
GET TO KNOW THE LOCALS hotel guests. It is a magical walk as you hear the thundering roar. Don’t forget to grab a raincoat at the reception! The rainbows are spectacular and all the different species of birds and butterflies are a nature lover’s dream. If you are staying on the Zambian side, a trip to the Victoria Falls would not be complete without sundowners at the sophisticated Royal Livingstone Hotel. Luckily it’s only a quick 10 minute walk away.
To really experience the life and culture of the Zambians, don’t miss out on a day trip to the city of Livingstone. Visit the Maramba Market, the largest market in Livingstone. Colourful, vibrant and alive with activity. Here you find the locals selling everything from ‘chitengies’ (brightly coloured fabric), fruit and vegetables to pots and pans made out of old motorcars, farm tools and curios. A real treasure trove of interesting and authentic artefacts. This tour can also be combined with the Mukuni village, a real African village giving you a glimpse into the life of the locals and their daily chores. Don’t forget to try the traditional food and beer while you’re there.
AFRICA’S LIVING SOUL
Experiencing the spray from the Falls
The Victoria Falls should be on everyone’s bucket list. It has inspired me to fall in love with Africa all over again. If I close my eyes, I can still hear the roaring of the powerful cascades of water and feel the spray of the majestic falls tickling my face.
DID YOU KNOW? TOP THINGS TO DO FLIGHT OF THE ANGELS The spectacular helicopter flight over the Victoria Falls is a surreal and magical experience. Choose the 20 minute flight over the Batoka Gorge, which is such an adrenaline-inducing high. This thrilling ride offers you the best photographic opportunities. Seeing the Victoria Falls and the Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park from the air will be forever engrained in memory.
SUNSET CRUISE
www.onroutemag.co.za
Enjoy a two hour Sunset Cruise with Ra-Ikane luxury cruises on a colonial boat. You will be treated with an impressive bar selection and delectable snacks. Pods of hippos are a thrill to see and the bird life is phenomenal. Enjoy a brief history of the area, cocktail in-hand, while you take in the wild beauty of the Zambezi River and Park.
10
ADRENALIN ADVENTURES For some wild fun, enjoy a bungee, bridge-swing and slide combo. Another exciting activity, which is a must, is white-water rafting down the rapids of the wild Zambezi River. Many consider this the best one day white water rafting run in the world! Game Drives in the Zambezi National Park are a definite highlight and can be enjoyed by families, suitable for children over three years.

HIDDEN GEMS Swimming in the rock pools below the Falls
Lunar rainbow
THE LUNAR RAINBOW If are lucky enough to be travelling to Victoria Falls during a full moon, this tour is highly recommended. A lunar rainbow at the Falls is created by water particles from the spray – a wonder of nature. Best seen from April to July when there is sufficient spray to create this effect and in the early hours after moonrise.
Swim under the spray of the Falls during low season (August to December only). To get there, you first walk into the gorge and are paddled across the Boiling Pot to right below the Falls. Enjoy the unique perspective from the bottom of the gorge. Swimming here in the rock pools below the Falls, surrounded by massive black basaltic rock towering up above you, is an unforgettable experience!
Microlight flight over the falls
MICROLIGHT FLIP Swimming in the Devil’s Pool
DEVIL’S POOL
For a complete adrenaline rush a microlight flip over the Falls is incredibly exciting. You are out in the open and exposed to the elements. Feel the spray and hear the thundering roar of the water as all your senses come alive.
Both terrifying and exhilarating is a swim in Devil’s Pool. During the dry season (mid-August to mid-January) the water level drops enough that a shallow pool forms along Livingstone Island at the edge of the falls. It offers a view of the falls like no other. It is truly jaw dropping to be perched on the edge of the pool! Bathers with nerves of steel can even lean over the slippery rock lip and peer directly into the gorge!
Sunset from the Buffalo Bar at Victoria Falls Safari Lodge
BUFFALO BAR & THE VULTURE CULTURE EXPERIENCE

SPEED DOWN THE ZAMBEZI RIVER
12
Imagine flying down the Zambezi River in a speedboat to explore the secluded areas and riverbanks of the Zambezi National Park. Safari Par Excellence (SAFPAR), an adventure specialist based in Livingstone has a fleet of jet boats to take guests away from the usual rivercruise routes. The trip will start from just above Victoria Falls and extends upstream to about 35 kilometres. Choose from the Early-Bird Explorer or the Sunset Explorer Package.
It is wonderful to relax on the deck of the Buffalo Bar at the Victoria Falls Safari Lodge with a sundowner while you enjoy stunning views of the busy waterhole. It is surrounded by bush and offers a unique view point. The sunsets are magnificent. The Vulture Culture takes place daily below the Buffalo Bar viewing deck. Leftover meat scraps and bones from the Boma dinner the night before are placed in the feeding area (supplementary to their natural feeding habits). Watch as hundreds of vultures and other birds of prey come to feast.

SWIM UNDER THE SPRAY
CROSSROADS [TRAVE L ] BY DA W N JORG E NS E N
Getting Bang FOR YOUR BUCK As South Africans we know all too well how much money goes into an international trip. Beyond the cost of long-haul flights, we need to convert our hard-earned rands into foreign currency and often end up spending a fortune on accommodation, food, transport and entry fees to tourist attractions. The good news is that not all destinations need to break the bank. In fact, there are many wonderful holiday alternatives that are relatively inexpensive and allow you to focus on the experience, without it being overshadowed by the cost. Here are some of the more budget-friendly destinations to ensure you get more bang for your buck!
PORTUGAL’S LISBON COBBLED ROADS AND TRAM RIDES You can lose your heart to this European city that effortlessly mixes traditional heritage with modern design and progressive thinking. A place of allure with its unique beauty, symmetrically laid Portuguese pavement, brightly painted buildings and viewpoints that reveal layer upon layer of terracotta roofs and white church steeples. Lisbon is now easier to get to and more affordable than ever with Taag Angolan Airlines adding convenient routes between Johannesburg and Cape Town, via Luanda into the Portuguese capital. Once there, accommodation can be booked in well-located and affordable Airbnb apartments, or one of the reasonably priced and stylish hotels with views towards the river.
www.onroutemag.co.za
Coffee and beer costs about the same as in South Africa and food can be bought from the market or enjoyed at restaurants that are frequented by the locals. You can choose to either walk the cobbled streets or hop on the tram and lose yourself in the sights as it transports you from one attraction to another. This is a city to live in, no matter the length of your stay, so make it your home for those days and pretend you’re a local soaking up the old-fashioned laidback charm as you get your European fix.

THAILAND THE LAND OF SMILES A firm favourite with South Africans, Thailand remains a popular destination that rewards with excellent value and the ability to match the expectations of all travellers, whatever kind of holiday you might be looking for. Known for its tropical beaches, opulent royal palaces, ancient ruins and ornate temples displaying figures of Buddha, as well as incredible street food and good value shopping. The capital, Bangkok, is an ultramodern vibrant city with high rises next to quiet canal communities and the iconic temples of Wat Arun, Wat Pho and the Emerald Buddha Temple. Walking the streets is a sensory overload of sounds, smells and colour as modern blends effortlessly with tradition. There’s the popular Andaman Islands for idyllic blue water, sun and sand, Koh Tao if you’re looking for a scuba diver’s paradise, the lesser know northern regions and the sought after Phi Phi Island off Phuket.

MADAGASCAR ISLAND HOPPING Not too far off Africa’s East Coast, Madagascar beckons. A naturalist’s promised land with varied terrain and unique wildlife, the island is easily reached by flight from Johannesburg. Decide on the areas you’d like to visit and whether you’d like to make the photogenic capital, Antananarivo, your base or simply stop there before heading to the nearby Andasibe National Park, or the iconic Avenue of Baobabs near Morondava. Alternately, give the island’s pristine oceans your attention and fly directly into Nosy Be for a four, five or seven-day catamaran charter, hopping between islands. Visit a lemur sanctuary, spend time in local fishing villages, eat honey just harvested in the wild and take guided walks in rain forests, when not scuba diving or snorkeling off the boat that is. For this, Madagascar has created fully inclusive, very affordable packages onboard their Gheko or Maki-Cat boats.
After your time onboard you may consider a few nights on one of the bigger islands as you acclimatise back to land. Sakatia Island is good for this, with Sakatia Lodge, which is run by South Africans, offering beginner and advanced scuba diving courses for a much better price than you would find at home. They are renowned for snorkeling with sea turtles, who come to eat the sea grass just off shore. With all travel in Madagascar it is recommended that you use the services of a local tour operator, to ensure smooth arrangements and best value. They can help you book internal transfers and even a driver and car, if that is your preference.
CURRENCY CONVERTER • R1 = 225 000 Malagasy Ariary (MGA) • Highlight Attraction: President Palace in Antananarivo. Entrance fee: 3000 MGA/pp • Coke: 1,850 MGA (about R8.00)

There are excellent value flight and accommodation packages should you wish to keep things simple, or buy a ticket and discover the various islands on your own. Food is cheap, the night markets delight any avid shopper and the Kingdom’s very efficient transport system makes moving between your chosen destinations effortless. It really is a relaxed paradise and the Thai people are renowned for their hospitably.

KENYA’S EAST COAST THE WONDERS OF WATAMU If you are looking for a holiday with a difference, one that combines eco-consciousness with sweeping beach sunsets and once-in-alifetime wildlife encounters, then Kenya should be on your list, specifically the village of Watamu near Malindi on the East coast. An easy flight to Malindi (or bus trip if your nerves are up for the winding road) brings you here from Nairobi. Watamu spoils for choice when it comes to activities on offer. With water sports in the Marine Reserve such as scuba diving, kite surfing, stand up paddle board, windsurfing, kayaking and body boarding. Not wanting to be in Kenya without going on safari, you can visit Kenya’s largest game reserve Tsavo National Park, just a two hour drive away.
Given that the area has experienced a decrease in tourism over the past years, hotel rates are negotiable and there are many beautiful, fully-serviced villas and homes for rental with Discover Watamu. The residents could not be more welcoming and friendly.

ESCORTED HOLIDAYS FOR THE INDEPENDENT TRAVELLER Should the idea of planning a trip to Europe be daunting when you do the maths yourself, consider a guided holiday and take advantage of the many perks of group travel – affordability being just one of them! Not only is it hassle-free with all activity and restaurant bookings made in advance, but also things like check-in at hotels and those little reminders about dietary requirements and special interests, are all taken care of. All you have to do is immerse yourself in the experience.
16
Companies such as Trafalgar Tours take great pride in their Travel Directors who unlock each destination you visit with their expert knowledge and local specialist guides. Their Be My Guest experiences also invite you into the homes of locals, providing an intimate look at the culture. Don’t be put off by the idea of travelling in a group, the itineraries allow much free time for solo and introspective exploration. Take a look at their various multi-country and themed itineraries and select the one that suits you best. Prepayment secures the rate, which means that even if the rand takes a dive, your pocket will not be affected. Another idea for the active traveller is On Foot Holidays – one of Europe’s self-guided walking tour operators that offer South Africans allinclusive holiday packages to numerous destinations from Croatia to Bulgaria, Greece and beyond. Their packages include accommodation and meals, you simply select the route and departure dates, and they take care of the rest! Really good value and a holiday that offers a more intimate look at the areas you traverse.

www.onroutemag.co.za
There are sunset dhow cruises, walks in the mangrove forest, mountain biking and visits to the neighboring Arabuko Sokoke coastal forest, not to mention the ancient Gede Ruins – the remains of a Swahili town with origins dating back to the 12th century. Don’t miss sundowners at Mida Creek and some shopping for art and curios. You even have the option of taking a yoga class at Watamu Treehouse and are spoilt for choice when it comes to fine Italian pizza, given the many Italians who consider this their second home. A must visit is Bio-ken Snake Farm and research centre, that does work developing anti-venom and educating people not to kill snakes on sight, with their Saving Snakes programme. A perfect way to add meaning to your time in Kenya is to sign up as an Eco Visitor at the Local Ocean Trust: Watamu Turtle Watch.
STAY IN SA
The devaluation of the rand, a corrupt government, bad leadership, crime and poverty are just a handful of the harsh realities hanging over South Africans lately. With our national morale at an alltime low, it’s no wonder so many people are packing up for greener pastures. So, if Europe, Australia or America are calling you, then we say good luck! But for those who would like to stay, despite the controversy, and be a part of the solution, here are some great reasons why you should!
BEAUTY BEYOND COMPARE Where else in the world can you go from the quiet desolation of the Kalahari to the outstretched plains of Namaqualand daisies, to the serenity of the winelands, bushveld alive with wild free-roaming animals, the incredible mountain vistas, long stretches of white sand beaches, the quaint village towns and the thriving metropolitan cities? Go anywhere in South Africa and experience the ultimate combination of nature, wildlife, culture, adventure, heritage and vibe – we really do have it all!
HUMOUR Our country is a joke! And if laughing is the best medicine, then we South Africans must surely be getting cured of our pessimism! It’s in our nature to make light of a bad situation. In fact, local comedians are having a field day, with so much material to work with encouraging laughter at just about everything from the Guptagate to the latest addition, Grace Mugabe!
SUNSHINE There’s nothing like sunshine to keep you smiling, and boy, have we got plenty of Vitamin D here! Not only are our summers flawless, with hot sunny days and welcome afternoon showers to cool it all down, but our winters are damn near flawless too, with cool, cuddleworthy nights and warm and sunny afternoons. Let’s face it, life is pretty tough as it is, so why add bad weather to the mix. Stay in SA! www.onroutemag.co.za
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK [THE I NS I D E S T ORY]
WHY YOU SHOULD
21
OFF THE BEATEN TRACK [THE I NS I D E S T ORY]
PROUD PEOPLE South Africans have made their mark on the world in so many positive ways. Individuals who have made an impact include Nelson Mandela, Jan Smuts, Elon Musk… and so many others! We have even proudly produced four Nobel Peace Prize laureates. On top of this, South Africans are highly regarded for their work ethic and entrepreneurialism wherever they find themselves in the world.
DEMOCRATIC CONSTITUTION This fact may be overshadowed by the corruption crisis we face, but our Constitution is regarded as the most progressive one in the world. Even after the death of Nelson Mandela, the constitution he championed continues to hold tremendous promise and is considered incredibly progressive by recognising gay marriage and all 11 official languages! Now you won’t find that anywhere else!
BOEREWORS & BILTONG There are few things South Africans love as much as a braai. There’s just something about grilling meat outdoors that appeals to everyone, regardless of their economic status, race or cultural background. Chucking some meat on a braai and cracking open a beer is common practise throughout the year, no matter the season, or time of day or night. It’s part of our heritage, part of who we are. What would life be like without boerewors and biltong?! And, of course, the all-round cheer and social ambiance that a braai induces.

GAMES FOR GIRLS Game preference really does come down to the individual, so trying to pick games specifically for girls can open the door to speculation, but we think we’ve found a selection of games that the girls may like just a little more than boys…
THE VOICE One of the hottest reality TV shows on rotation at the moment was recently turned into a video game. Available on PS4 and Xbox One, the Voice offers players a chance to either enter the show, or play party mode, which means you can just sing with mates in a head to head contest. The Show mode takes you through The Voice contestant experience, from the blind auditions through to the battle rounds and eventually all the way to the live shows. The game needs microphones in order to work, so please make sure, when you order your copy that you look into a set of those.

GUITAR HERO – ALL VERSIONS
24
One of the most addictive games on the market, Guitar Hero offers players several genres and versions to choose from. There are iconic band versions like Metallica and Aerosmith and generic versions that just give you access to the coolest rock ballads and tunes from the last five decades. Being able to add some drums and another mate or two to your rock band means that not only can you play Guitar Hero for several hours on your own, but you can also get your buddies around for a girl’s night and rock and sing your way to stardom.
The Sims, whichever version you play, offers you, as the player, the opportunity to live a somewhat alternative life. When the game first came out in the year 2000 it took the world by storm. The game is an open-ended simulation and uses isometric projection to create a simulated world. You build characters, friends, family, a house and you even decorate it. It is the truest form of an alternative life and has ultimately lead to many more outlandish open-world games that have become some of the most popular on the planet. If you feel like The Sims, but with a bit more risk and excitement, look into games like World of Warcraft. It is not quite a happy neighbourhood kind of game, but it does allow you to create ‘another you.’

When the Smart Car was first launched, it was all the rage. People loved the quirky look and compact size, but that novelty quickly wore off. So when we were given a chance to put the new Smart Forfour through its paces, we approached the opportunity with a certain amount of trepidation...

he Smart Car is manufactured by the same company that build Mercedes Benz and our first impression as how cool the car looked. It had lost that awkward box-with-wheels look and been replaced with trendy sleek design, which had been replaced with a more sleek and trendy exterior. The two-tone paint job and funky shape made the Smart Car stand out and it was an instant attraction with fellow road users. You can’t escape the diminutive size of the Forfour, but at least it turned a few heads! The apparent lack of size on the outside doesn’t compromise too much on the comfort of the driver behind the wheel. The interior is practically laid out with all the necessary bells and whistles to ensure that the driver is properly taken care of. It has Bluetooth and USB audio functionality. The majority of the controls inside the Forfour can be operated from the steering wheel, which means there is very little to distract the driver while driving. The space for the passengers in the rear is compact, but manageable over short trips. The performance of the Smart Forfour is neither here nor there. It will absolutely not win any kind of drag race, but it doesn’t leave you rocking in your seat to help it scurry up hills a little quicker. An Ocean Adventure!
Explore glamorous coastlines and experience an abundance of marine life up close. Kayak Cape Town offers first-time paddlers an incredible guided tour for a completely new perspective of the deep blue.
T www.onroutemag.co.za
he Kayak Cape Town team’s wonderful water tours range from the sedate to the adventurous, but the most popular is a visit to the penguin colony at Boulders Beach. Paddle the sparkling, warmer waters of False Bay and soak up the views of the majestic mountains, sun-drenched boulders, and marine life along the way.
44
When there’s nothing between you and an endless ocean, you open yourself up to an amazing experience. Simon’s Town is mostly blessed with tranquil seas so conditions are safe. You’ll get to see penguins of course, but also masses of birdlife – cormorants, terns, gulls and the marvelous oystercatcher. You’ll see fish swimming under your kayak, and seals lethargically floating all around you, with their flippers popping up in front and behind you from time to time. But most importantly you will see the ocean (and the land) from a perspective you never have before. It’s the stuff that nature channel documentaries are made of! Tours take to the waters 365 days of the year, weather permitting. Yes, even in winter! The winter months are surprisingly wonderful for paddling when calmer, windless days offer idyllic conditions. Plus there is always a chance of seeing whales in winter too. So, if you’re thinking about when the best time is to take on an adventure of this
nature? The answer is, whenever you’re available to do it! And the best part is anyone can! According to owner Derek, the vast majority of his customers have never been in a kayak before. In fact, anyone who is fit enough to do a gentle, two-hour hike can do it. For the slightly more apprehensive adventurer, it’s also good to know that a very stable two person ‘sit-on-top’ type of kayak is used. For people who have never paddled before this is definitely more comfortable because you don’t feel as constricted as you would in a ‘sit-inside’ type of kayak. Also, in the unlikely event you fall off, it’s easier to get back on. With 10 double kayaks, the tour takes a maximum of 20 people. And, what better way to enjoy a paddle, than sharing the fun (and the work) with your partner! In summer, when the weather is particularly hot, the False Bay waters are perfect for flopping into the water for a cooling dip before clambering on to your kayak. In Australia and the United States kayaking is huge with hundreds of thousands of paddlers out there. But in South Africa it’s just taking off. Anyone who doesn’t try it is simply missing out - the salty taste of the sea on your lips and rosy sun-kissed skin are all signs of a great day out on the water. Not to mention, a great story of an epic sea adventure to tell.
It’s the stuff that nature channel documentaries are made of!
Once a month (between April and October), when the weather is good, you can paddle out to sea and watch the splendour of the full moon rising over the bay for a truly unique experience. Cost: R300-R350. Booking in advance is essential!

Having recently visited the Cape West Coast, it’s easy to see its appeal. There’s an abundance of picture postcard places to visit, far fewer people than in Cape Town and it too offers up the same climate as the Mother City; so why aren’t the areas of Langebaan and Paternoster as hellishly expensive as Cape Town? Reason #1: remote location! There is one long and winding road between Cape Town and the major areas of interest up north, and that road has very little to offer a day commuter. So if people aren’t interested in a quick trip up to Langebaan or Paternoster for the day, demand for retail space will be low.

Langebaan
Reason #2: the wind. Yes, we braved the trip up to Langebaan during December and found that despite it being the height of the silly season, the freakishly strong winds meant the beaches were empty, ordering a meal came with a plate covered in sand and even a game of golf proved to be unenjoyable. But despite these reasons, there is still enough to warrant an investment in a piece of property in the area. The peace and quiet, the space, the unmatched beauty and the hidden gems make this piece of Africa a treasure worth digging up and dusting off. Plus, property in the area can be picked up at a steal! If you are in the market for a retirement home, there are several lovely communities set up to cater to your every need. Many of the locals we encountered that called Langebaan home had chosen the area for its clean air, lack of commercial hustle and close proximity to Cape Town. Owning a home in Langebaan or Paternoster meant that making a day trip down to Cape Town is easy and worthwhile.

These prices seem high, but the equivalent property further south would more than double in price. There is a steady demand for property in the holiday rental market in this part of the Cape, but there are times of the year where numbers are rather low. With access to unique wine estates, incredible beaches, a few golf courses, the fynbos and centuries of history, this part of the Western Cape really does offer the discerning investor something different. Should you make the choice to buy a spot in this area, you will not find a better place in the country to unwind. Buy plenty of books, invest in a decent off road vehicle and use this part of South Africa as

MEN AT WORK
FIGHTING SA’s
Worst Fire Wayne Sternsdorf is a family man, a firefighter and an unsung hero who found himself on the frontline of the Garden Route disaster. He is one of the many brave souls who faced some of the worst flames the country has ever seen!
What is your position and how many years have you been in the Knysna Fire Department?
www.onroutemag.co.za
I am the Station Commander at the Knysna Fire Department and have been for the past two years, but I have been a member of the fire service for the last 30 years.
50
Is this the worst fire you have had to fight? Yes, definitely! In my career, spanning 30 years, I’ve never seen anything like this.
What are some of the things you experienced that you never had before? Helplessness at the sheer size of the fire. Normally you have a starting point from where you can start fighting but this time we didn’t know where to start! Unfortunately the five pillars of fire danger were all aligned, these included: severe drought, low humidity, strong berg winds that were hot and dry, dry vegetation and 100% topography. The fire’s fuel load was just right and all it needed was a spark and away it went!
What caused the fire?
Please explain how you felt when you were called up to fight.
It’s still being investigated at this stage.
I felt helpless. After we fought the fire the
first time, we got a second call at 3am to go back because the fire had sparked up again. We were on our way back and by the time we got there the fire had already met us half way! It’s difficult to describe the feeling. We were faced with this huge fire, incomparable to what we were used to. We had no point of attack on this one because, every time we attacked, the fire blazed around us and even over us. When we realized the severity, our biggest priority become life preservation, rather than fighting the fire.
Did you see anything that took an emotional toll on you? The desperation on people’s faces; members of the public were in complete panic mode and there was an overriding feeling of

imminent doom. The look of, “Are we ever going to get out of this?”, and you feel just as helpless. Remember, we all live in the area too so we were asking ourselves, “Are our families okay?”.
What was the death toll in the area? Seven people died. One was a volunteer firefighter from Plettenberg Bay, from the wild fire unit, and another was a forestry firefighter. The rest were civilians. For the extent of this incident to only have lost seven lives was very

lucky! Portugal’s recent fire was a third of the size of the Kynsna fire and 67 lives were lost. So, if you look at it from that point of view, we did a good job. Houses can be rebuild, lives can’t!
What are some of the things you had to do in order to try and manage the disaster? We had to think totally out of the box with this one. It really put us through our paces. When I was an instructor at the City of Cape Town, I always taught candidates the “what if” situations – this was definitely one of those. There was a lot of multi-tasking and with the water shortage, being in the midst of a severe drought, we had to think of unique ways to get water with limited resources. That was a massive challenge. People pledged the use of their huge tankers that normally transported milk; Nestlé brought water to us like that.
How do your family feel about your job?
Ruins after the fires in Knysna
to take over from the Incident Commander, which was nerve wracking. It changed my perspective and it was overwhelming, where I knew long term effects of my decisions would be felt.
How have people come to the aid of local families who have lost everything? Different volunteer organisations have been set up and the municipality have come to party in a huge way too. So many are still in the area and it’s amazing to see people dropping everything to assist. It has been extremely traumatic for lots of people, including us, the department, but we have to keep a brave and professional face.

A special mention to Chief you had to make while on the Fire Officer, Mr. Clinton Manuel, who, under frontline? a great amount of pressure, made calculated decisions that not only effected the fire fighters, There were too many! But the worst was but the safety of every citizen of Knysna. And I really the decision to move away when can’t forget my wife! She was amazing with her it got too unsafe. There were times when support and understanding, and for being there I thought we could stop a house from burning down, and then we had to get out for me and my fellow firefighters. and just watch it go up in flames. That’s a person’s whole life right there! What character traits does one
52
Are South Africans equipped for such a disaster? This was the first “Type one” incident that we’ve ever experienced. The big one in Cape Town, a few years back, was a “Type Three”. So it definitely wasn’t your run of the mill fire. It’s where you see you’re training really kick in. I also had
need to be part of an emergency services team?
It’s really not for everybody. You have to be a team player. You need to be able to think on your feet. You’ve got to have the passion and be willing to serve people. It’s a thankless job some days, and you’re away from family on Christmas, and other public holidays. You’ve got to really want to do it.
What is the emotional state of the Knysna community today? A lot of people are still in panic mode. They see a bit of smoke, and then there is a wave of panic, exacerbated by social media. It’s going to take a while. Social media has its positive impact, such as alerting people, but it can also incite unnecessary panic. For now, we’ve been dealing with small smouldering areas in the middle of nowhere, and the smoulderings are going nowhere, but we have to respond. So we send people out there to monitor the situation, but there is absolooutely no reason for panic at all.
How has the department been affected by the fires? It’s not over yet. Not for a while. For now we are staying on our toes. We’re in a drought situation, so we’ve got to be careful. When it’s over we’ll sleep for a week!
Your message to the public? This was the biggest fire in the history of the country. It just takes a concerted effort from everybody to stay safe. Be responsible. Don’t create a fire hazard. Litter build-up is a fire hazard. We all have to be responsible and think positively about the environment, it’s not up to somebody else, we’ve all got to do our bit. Fire is everybody’s fight, not just the firefighters. And lastly, don’t mess with Mother Nature!

THE PAINTED ROCK GARDEN AT REVOLVER CREEK In the ‘70s outdoor artist, Nukain Mabuza’s Stone Garden was a visually striking landmark that drew tourists from South Africa and abroad. Situated at the bend in the road at Revolver Creek, between Barbeton and Kaapmaiden, the garden featured painted rocks that trailed up the koppie.
A NATIONAL TREASURE BABERTON
The artist responsible was a farm worker who created the amazing inhabited artwork because ‘it made him happy’. What inspired Nukain to start painting isn’t known. In fact very little is known about this eccentric, brilliant man, who inspired so many. He described it as his ‘flower garden’ and explained that if you walked to the top of the mountain and looked down, the rocks appeared to be flowers tumbling from heaven. Sadly it was only after Nukain’s death that his ‘Stone Garden’ won the acclaim it deserved. Now his garden is considered one of only 44 environmental works identified as global examples of ‘Outside Art’. Only two of these can be found in South Africa (the other is The Owl House in Nieu Bathesda) making Nukain’s garden a national treasure. It may have faded in the last 34 years since his death, but a magical vibrancy still remains at this site. So, while the garden is only a glimmer of its former glory, it is still worth a visit. HEALTH & SAFETY HEALTH PROTECTION INSIDE YOUR CAR FILTER YOUR CABIN AGAINST ALLERGENS, BACTERIA AND FINE DUSTS In summer many people suffer from hay fever and allergic reactions caused by pollen and various dust particles in the air. In terms of car cabins, the new Bosch FILTER+ now provides a significant relief for allergy sufferers. Thanks to its three filter layers, the new series can increase health, safety and comfort. An activated-carbon layer neutralisers harmful and foul-smelling gases. An ultra-fine microfiber layer retains particles that have a diameter of more than 2.5 micrometers, that means 99% of all fine dusts. And last but not least, an anti-allergic layer with a special molecular grid structure separates allergens and renders them harmless. In addition, silver ions kill bacteria that is in the air. This filtration ensures the air inside the vehicle is clean and free of any odours.
LESS DISTRACTION, INCREASED SAFETY Thanks to the filter’s anti-allergic effect, the amount of allergic reactions distracting the driver is reduced. The new FILTER+ thus also contributes to increased road safety. Moreover, the new cabin filter also reduces windshield fogging. The vehicle equipment benefits as well as the new filter reduces the amount of residues on fans and air conditioning by optimum filter performance. The functionality of these systems is ensured and the risk of failure and repairs is reduced. Bosch recommends replacing the cabin filter once a year or every 15 000 kilometers.

NEED A DIGITAL DETOX? We live in a digitally demanding world, where being connected is a necessity. We’re not discounting the advantages of having the world at our fingertips, but being glued to your electronic device has a profound effect on both your physical and mental health. Here are a few ways to reduce your digital consumption and to start enjoying a more balanced lifestyle.
GO OUT! Studies prove time and again that the most influential conversations happen face-to-face! So, take yourself out for a walk, or for a coffee, or even to local fruit and vegetable shop and see how you can strike up conversations with unknown people. You would be surprised at the valuable interactions that come about.

READ THE NEWSPAPER Instead of scrolling through news feeds on a tiny screen and getting distracted by millions of adverts as you go, rather pick up a proper newspaper and find yourself a quiet corner.
CHARGE YOUR PHONE AWAY FROM YOUR BED This way you won’t receive any unexpected Facebook notifications or Whatsapp messages in the middle of the night. Imagine what a sweet pleasure an undisturbed night would be!
WORKOUT WITH NO MUSIC Whether it’s a jog through the park or on the treadmill at gym, working out with no music allows your brain some room to focus. Plus, there’s no better motivation than the sound of your own heartbeat as you sweat it out.
MAKE A BET No one wants to lose money! Why not make a bet with someone who is also in need of a digital detox to see who can survive without their digital device? Start out small, like dedicate a weekend to being phone-free. Bet you can do it!
LOOK IN THE MIRROR No more selfies! Look in the mirror instead. You’ll improve your selfesteem, be in the moment and when you do start taking those selfies again you’ll know all your perfect angles!
EMBRACE THE ARTS Instead of sitting on the couch binge watching that Netflix series everyone is talking about, go out and watch a play, some live comedy or a musical performance. There’s something quite thrilling about live stage performance that keeps you in the moment.
DELETE SOCIAL MEDIA Deleting social media apps from your phone will most likely lead to less attachment to them. Who really needs to check their Twitter timeline every two minutes anyway?
FIND A HOBBY Let’s be honest, our digital devices are total time wasters because when we do have a free moment, there seems to be nothing better to do. But there is! You can volunteer at a charity of your choice, learn to play a musical instrument or simply dedicate some quality time to yourself. By filling up your free time with stuff you enjoy, digital detoxing will occur without you even noticing.
TURN IT OFF!
