TRAVEL WESTERN CAPE B Y ANG I E S NYMAN
Hello Western Cape! The Western Cape’s natural beauty makes it one of the world’s greatest tourist destinations, and those of us who don’t live there – secretly or overtly – wish we did!
It’s the fourth-largest province and also ranks fourth in population. Other than famous Cape Town, major cities and towns include George, Knysna, Paarl, Swellendam, Oudtshoorn, Stellenbosch, Worcester, Mossel Bay and Strand which are all fascinatingly diverse.

ZEITZ MOCAA FOOD 6TH FLOOR, V&A WATERFRONT, SILO DISTRICT, CAPE TOWN
THE BOTANICAL BAR 160 LONGMARKET STREET, CAPE TOWN The Botanical Bar stems from two ideas: the current trend for making quality smallbatch gins, rums, brandies, craft beers and wine; and the incredible smells and textures of the plants in the medicinal and useful plants section the Green Point Park Biodiversity Garden, which inspired owner Anthony Gird and head barmen, Peter and Kenan, to create their own botanical tinctures, bitters, syrups, vermouths and “shrubs”. These form a ‘library’ of flavours from which their bartenders recreate their own imaginative classics. They also dream up amazing non-alcoholic options! The Botanical Bar food features a mezzestyle selection of dips, breads and pickles for the bar. They use local, seasonal ingredients, incorporating South African indigenous botanicals in dressings, oils, infusions and bitters. The seated area offers more substantial sharing plates with a focus on vegetables, like their carrot, pickled grape and pea shoot salad, and cauliflower dip with curried paaper bites; and a few fish and meat options with their own take on a few local South African dishes, like smoked snoek and spekboom pâté with seed crackers, and venison frikkadels with wild mint salsa and pickled red onion. To complete the theme, the stylish interior has also been specially designed to connect with nature by bringing the outdoors in. www.thebotanicalbar.co.za, call 076 124 4639
Fresh to the Cape Town restaurant scene, FOOD is set on level six of the remarkable Zeitz MOCAA remodelled silo space, with an awe-inspiring 270-degree view. The innovative menu focuses on creative flavours with the clever use of ingredients and “homey goodness” infused into every dish. The latest addition to the menu includes braised short-rib with butternut puree, mustard and herb cannellini bean cassoulet, charred onion, grilled baby corn and pistachio! DID YOU KNOW? Silo District is the new uber-trendy restaurant and bar destination at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town which offers stylish establishments that complement its arty appeal.
NUDE FOODS GROCERY STORE 5 CONSTITUTION STREET, ZONNEBLOEM, CAPE TOWN Nude Foods is a plastic-free grocery store that aims to eliminate single-use plastic and unnecessary packaging. Customers are encouraged to bring their own containers, and produce is costed on its weight. Allowing customers to choose quantities reduces the waste of pre-packaged goods that might sit on shelves for weeks, spoil and go uneaten. If you don’t bring your own, glass jars and bottles are available to buy, as well as pure cotton, reusable dry goods bags, and mesh bags for fresh produce. Brown paper bags are free. In addition to being plastic-free, Nude Foods offers a variety of organic and earth-friendly foods – all of which are GMOfree. It supports quality food brands that have eliminated preservatives and fillers. Fresh produce is sourced from a local farm called Naturally Organic, an EU certified 100% organic farm in Phillipi, an agricultural region near Cape Town. By trying to source everything locally, they support and build local businesses. www.nudefoods.co.za, email shop@nudefoods.co.za, call 021 437 3003 5
found in seawater dive down in shallow water to hunt for crabs, small fish, rock lobster, molluscs and the occasional little inshore shy shark. Otters are also an important part of any aquatic ecosystem and indicate good freshwater quality because, unlike seals and other sea mammals, they have no subcutaneous fat layer to keep them warm in our cold seas and need clean fresh water to drink and to rinse their fur of salt to restore insulation. Creating awareness for their protection and that of their habitat will ensure their future survival. You’ll also find smaller wild animals such as porcupine, caracal, spotted genet and water mongoose in and around the urban fringe of Cape Town.

On the quieter beaches of Cape Town, you may be fortunate to spot a little resident wild otter in the shallow water or quickly moving across the beach to safety. Occasionally, an otter will approach dogs while walking on the beach where there’ll be a few minutes of wonderful playful interaction before the otter goes off into the waves. This is usually our Cape clawless otter (Aonyx Capensis), an inhabitant of our rivers, wetlands and certain areas of the seashore. Clawless otters are quite unusual in that they don’t have clawed front feet and use their super-sensitive whiskers and five-fingered front paws to detect their prey in low light conditions. DISCOVERY & EXPLORATION SEE THE RIEL DANCERS FROM WUPPERTHAL Clanwilliam is one of the 10 oldest towns in South Africa and is only two hours’ drive from the Mother City. It’s nestled in the Olifants River Valley at the foot of the magnificent and extensive Cederberg mountain range. Clanwilliam is small, but is full of history and heritage, with plenty to see and do in and around its borders. It’s also home to the local Riel dancers. Born out of traditional Khoi and San ceremonial dances around the fire, the Riel Dance has been practiced by descendants of these indigenous cultures for many years. Recognised as a form of cultural expression, Riel dances include courtship rituals, and mimicking typical animal antics along with lots of bravado, showmanship and foot stomping in traditional outfits.
LEADING THE RIEL RENAISSANCE...
www.onroutemag.co.za
From humble beginnings in the remote, impoverished village of Wupperthal, choreographer, manager and coach Floris Smith and his phenomenal ‘Trappers’ have taken the Riel dance scene by storm, winning award after award.

They returned triumphantly from Los Angeles as national heroes, after having danced their way to victory – bringing back Gold in the Ethnic Folk Dance category, and scooping no less than three Gold medals, one Silver, and putting South Africa’s oldest indigenous ethnic folk dances firmly on the global map. Floris Smith is based in the town of Clanwilliam, but be on the lookout for the Riel dance group still in many events locally and around the Western Cape. www.bushmanskloof.co.za/riel-dance

SWIM FROM ROBBEN ISLAND TO BLOUBERG With its iconic status, history and symbolism, the 7.2km swim from Robben Island to the mainland at Blouberg is a uniquely South African challenge and remarkably rewarding experience. The unique perspective of Table Mountain that a swimmer gets from the water is unforgettable! Although the swim is a dream for many, it’s not the distance that is the challenge but rather the low water temperatures which make the swim particularly difficult. All Robben Island swims are conducted under the auspices of the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association (CLDSA) which records and officiates swims in the area. Most swims follow the English Channel rules which state that no wetsuits may be used. A swimming costume, cap and goggles are all that stands between a swimmer and the frigid Atlantic waters. Hence, the biggest threat facing swimmers is hypothermia! Preparation for a Robben Island swim must include cold water acclimatisation. Regular dips in the cold waters off the Cape coast or swimming through a Joburg winter, in an outside pool, are essential for both body and mind preparation. Eating more cake and putting on some weight could also be beneficial, as extra body fat serves as a natural insulation and may prevent hypothermia. Furthermore, a swimmer must devote time to building up their endurance and swimming technique. Open water swimming requires an efficient stroke with less focus on power from
the legs and more focus on maintaining a good rhythm and being comfortable in the water. What about sharks? Seeing a fin in these grey waters is frightening! More often than not it’s a Cape fur seal coming to investigate. Notwithstanding this, many swims are now carried out using a Shark Shield, a device that emits an electrical wave in water that is supposedly discomforting to sharks! The swim can be conducted as a solo crossing or as part of a relay team. It can be undertaken independently or you can participate in an organised event such as the annual Freedom Day Swim on 21 April (where a half distance swim is also available).
BE PREPARED! If you’re planning on doing the Robben Island swim, you need to be a technically competent swimmer. A Swimfast one-on-one video analysis and stroke correction session will give you invaluable insight into your current stroke. It’ll give you a visual reference on how to improve your technique and drills designed specifically to correct your weak areas. It’s guaranteed to make you swim more efficiently, and will make the time and effort you invest in your swimming training effective, efficient and rewarding.
Two Oceans Aquarium runs some amazing education and outreach programmes, along with its volunteers and animals, of course! These include initiatives specifically tackling the destructive plastic waste that hinders, chokes and kills sea creatures, with its environmental campaigns, the seal disentanglement programme and their conservation and research initiatives.
The aquarium also recently released its resident loggerhead turtle, Yoshi. Her satellite tag is still active and you can follow her progress in the ocean by checking in on the aquarium’s blog, via the link on www.aquarium.co.za. Visitors to the aquarium also have the opportunity to learn more about the turtles and other sea creatures during the daily interactive feeds. www.aquarium.co.za
www.onroutemag.co.za
Something that caught our eye is the Aquarium’s turtle rehabilitation and release programme.
8
Each year concerned members of the public bring sea turtles, washed up on Western Cape beaches, to the Aquarium for rehabilitation. These turtles range in size from as small as 25g, all the way up to 76kg! The turtles receive all necessary medical assistance, which can include x-rays, MRI scans, surgery and even physiotherapy. Once the turtles have returned to good health and have been given clearance by a veterinarian, they are either flown to Durban and released, or are released into the warmer waters that are seasonally found just off Cape Point.
• Distance: +/- 7.2km from Robben Island to Blouberg • Water temp: 11-18 degrees Celcius • Best time of year to swim: between October and May • Biggest challenges: weather (wind, fog), water temperatures • For more info: Big Bay events: www.bigbayevents.co.za / email derrick@bigbayevents.co.za (your are looking at a cost of about R2 500 to do the swim) • Cape Long Distance Swimming Association: www.cldsa.co.za

KEY FACTS:
HOTLINE FOR STRANDED SEA ANIMALS Plettenberg Bay now has its very own marine animal stranding hotline. The network is coordinated by Dr. Gwenith Penry, an appointed strandings agent for the Port Elizabeth Museum along with Frikkie van der Vyver and Danielle Conry. Dedicated individuals volunteer and respond to marine animals in distress, and collect valuable samples and data on dead marine mammals too. Marine mammals are protected under strict national and international laws and only specialists are permitted to handle and assess them.
WHAT TO DO WHEN YOU ENCOUNTER A STRANDED MARINE ANIMAL
Yoshi, the loggerhead turtle
• Give it space and assess the situation from a safe distance. • Take a photo and send it, with pertinent information, to the stranding hotline. • Details to include: species (or detailed description of the animal), location, living or dead, any visible injuries, and circumstances (is it on a crowded beach, or a difficult to access position). This will help them know what sort of equipment to bring and who to contact for assistance. PLETT HOTLINE – 0794634837

ON-A-BUDGET THRILL GO UP THE LIGHTHOUSE AT THE SOUTHERN-MOST TIP OF AFRICA • R15 for adults and R7.50 for kids (2-11 years) Built in 1848, the Cape Agulhas lighthouse was the second to be built in South Africa after the Green Point lighthouse in Cape Town, in 1824. Today the lighthouse is a national monument, housing the unique lighthouse museum and a small rustic restaurant. The coastline here is a graveyard of shipwrecks with the sea off Cape Agulhas being notoriously treacherous. The Arniston (1815), Cooranga (1964), Elise (1879), European (1877), Federal Lakes (1975), Geortyrder (1849), Gouritz (1981), and Gwendola (1968) are just a few of the vessels that were lost along this coast. (You can see showpieces from some of these shipwrecks are on display at the Bredasdorp Shipwreck Museum, on Independent Street in Bredasdorp – 028 424 1240.)
CAPE CANOPY TOUR
The loss of ships, notably The Arniston, necessitated the building of the lighthouse. Seventy-one steps lead up to the top of what is now the second-oldest working lighthouse in southern Africa, for a spectacular view that is a must-see according to visitors. Stone mined from an adjacent limestone quarry provided the raw materials for its construction.
The tour consists of 13 platforms, eleven thrilling slides (some more than 300m long), and a suspension bridge positioned high above a spectacular waterfall which is guaranteed to be one of the unforgettable highlights!
www.onroutemag.co.za
Visitors to the area can still see the Meisho Maru 38 wreck on the shores of Cape Agulhas. Remains of ancient stone fish traps used by the Khoisan people can be seen to the east of the lighthouse.

DID YOU KNOW? A ‘!Naba’, or Kalahari truffle, is a potato-like fungus delicacy with intricate flavouring and the name suits the festival’s overall quintessence: local talent at its highest quality!
Found only in the Kalahari, North Africa, the Mediterranean and the Middle East where, for centuries, people have sought out this elusive fungus in shallow, sandy soil where
it maintains a symbiotic relationship with the roots of a savoury, edible fruit, the desert melon or Tsamma melon. The truffle is also known as desert gold!

KALAHARI LAMB POTJIE This recipe is from Deon in the Kalahari. He once went to a potjiekos competition to give moral support to some of his senior colleagues, but the guy in charge of making the potjie developed a lack of concentration. Deon, who was only 22 years old at the time, ended up making the pot by himself, ensuring his team had an entry to submit for judging and got something to eat. Although they didn’t win the overall competition (which was judged on presentation, team spirit and taste), they did win the category for best-tasting pot of the day. Not bad for a rookie pot-maker drafted in as a last-minute substitution. Today, Deon’s friends regularly ask for this recipe after they taste it and he says, ‘It is my number one tried and tested potjie recipe.’ A wonderful story from a beautiful part of our country!
• 2.5 kg stewing lamb or ‘potjiekos lamb’ pieces • 1 tot olive oil • 1 tot butter • 1 tot white bread or cake flour • 1/2 tot salt • 1 tsp ground black pepper • 3 onions (sliced into rings) • 3 bell peppers (any combination of green, yellow or red, seeded and sliced into strips)
• 4 garlic cloves (crushed and chopped) • fresh ginger, equal in volume to the garlic (grated) • 1 tsp turmeric • 1 tsp medium curry powder • 1 tsp nutmeg • 4 whole cloves • 2 cinnamon sticks • 4 potatoes (cubed) • 2 cups mutton or beef stock • 1/2 cup chutney • 1 orange (juice and zest) • orange slices and lemon thyme (to garnish)
Images: supplied
WHAT YOU NEED
WHAT TO DO 1. Heat olive oil and butter in your potjie. Dust the meat with the flour, season with salt and pepper and fry it in the potjie in batches. If you fry all the meat at once, it will steam and become grey, hence you do it in batches. Keep the browned meat aside. Once all the meat is browned and the potjie is empty again, proceed to the next step. 2. If needed, add a little bit more oil to your potjie and fry the onions and peppers until they are soft and start to brown. Add the garlic, ginger, turmeric, curry powder, nutmeg, cloves and cinnamon sticks.
This Kalahari Lamb Potjie is taken from Shisanyama, Braai Recipes from South Africa by Jan Braai. (Bookstorm) R345 from good bookstores nationwide.
Who is Jan Braai? His real name is Jan Scannell and he lives to braai. He started the National Braai Day initiative in 2005 and his aim is to create a national celebration of the one activity all South Africans have in common, regardless of race, language, gender or wealth: cooking over a fire.
4. At this point, add the chutney and orange juice and zest. Gently toss and now simmer for another hour until the meat is tender. During this time, you should consider keeping the lid off the potjie to cook off any excess liquid there might be. If the potjie looks a bit dry, keep the lid on and if it looks very dry and on the verge of burning, add a bit of extra liquid like wine, beer, water or juice. 5. After a total cooking time of 3 hours, give your potjie a quick quality-control taste test and add salt and pepper if needed. Alternatively, just let guests add salt and pepper to taste when serving. 6. When you are happy with the consistency of the sauce and the meat is soft and tender, whichever happens last, the potjie is ready. Serve on a bed of rice – basmati, jasmine, white, brown or whatever fancy rice is in fashion in the area you operate in.
www.onroutemag.co.za
3. After a minute or two, as soon as the spices look like they might burn, add the meat back into the potjie. Also add the potatoes and liquid stock. Use a spoon to scrape loose anything that might be sticking to the bottom of the potjie and then put the lid on the potjie. Simmer over gentle heat for 2 hours.

ADRENALINE & OUTDOOR BLOODHOUND 500, SOUTH AFRICA 2018 – ANOTHER STEP CLOSER TO A NEW WORLD LAND SPEED RECORD... The BLOODHOUND Team will be testing the BLOODHOUND Supersonic Car on the Hakskeenpan in the Northern Cape in October 2018. They aim to trial the car at speeds of up to 800kmh. These tests are a key milestone on the journey to set a new World Land Speed Record. Following the successful 320kmh UK runway tests last October, the BLOODHOUND Team is confident the car will perform as expected at higher speeds. This time out it will be fitted with solid aluminium wheels, designed especially for desert running, and a parachute braking system. Whilst BLOODHOUND SSC will ultimately be fitted with three hybrid rockets along with its EJ200 jet engine, it will be running on the 54 000 bhp jet engine alone during these trails. Going fast is not the primary aim of the BLOODHOUND Project, rather it’s to inspire the next generation of scientists and engineers by showcasing these subjects in the most exciting way possible. More than 1 300 schools across South Africa have signed up to use the free BLOODHOUND education resources in their classrooms. They can access these resources at www.bloodhoundssc.com/education Fans of BLOODHOUND will be invited to purchase tickets to see the BLOODHOUND SSC run on the Hakskeen Pan in October. Details will be posted on the BLOODHOUND website at www.bloodhoundssc.com/bloodhound500.

DISCOVERY & EXPLORATION THE NAMAQUALAND FLOWER ROUTE
www.onroutemag.co.za
The spring wild flowers are a phenomenon that never fails to amaze visitors to what is considered South Africa’s “outback” – Namaqualand. The arid areas of the Cape West Coast and the semi-desert of Namaqualand, transform into a vibrant floral wonderland that attracts photographers, artists, botanists and sightseers from around the globe. Astonishingly, the floral carpet comprises some 3 800 species, of which 28% are endemic.
14
Must-have guide for visitors to the region – Wild Flowers of Namaqualand by Annelise le Roux (Struik Nature) R360 from leading bookstores and online at www.randomstruik.co.za.
The Namaqualand Flower Route lies about a five hours’ drive north of Cape Town, in a series of drives that focus on the towns of Garies, Springbok, Kamieskroon and Port Nolloth, way up the N7. Included in the wild flower route are the Richtersveld National Park, Goegap Nature Reserve and Skilpad Wild Flower Reserve. You will however also see wild flowers all over the Namaqualand, the West Coast and Olifants River Valley, and towns such as Citrusdal, Clanwilliam, Lamberts Bay, Nieuwoudtville and Vredendal.
THE RICHTERSVELD NATIONAL PARK WORLD HERITAGE SITE Location: The Richtersveld is a desert landscape characterised by rugged kloofs and high mountains, situated in South Africa’s Northern Cape province. The park covers more than 6 000 square kilometres, 30% of it in the far northwest of South Africa (Richtersveld), the rest stretching across the Orange River into Namibia. Geology: There are a number of interesting archaeological sites in this region. The earliest evidence of human habitation was discovered in a shelter at Die Toon near Tatasberg. Bones uncovered reveal that at least some of the species currently present in the region, such as springbok and zebra were also present 4 000 years ago. The presence of fish bones indicates that the Orange River was an important source of food for the hunter-gatherers.
Starry sky over the desert rock
Taken from 50 Must-see Geological Sites by Gavin Whitfield (Struik Nature) R300 from leading bookstores and online at www.randomstruik.co.za/geology.
Nature: There are more than 200 species of birds in the park and 10 different species of bats – so stay alert at dusk. The zebra that occurs here is Hartmann’s mountain zebra, unlike Burchell’s zebra of the Kruger National Park. If you pass any, see if you can spot the differences. (Hint: look at the stripes and dewlap.) Don’t Miss... There are more than 220 kilometres of 4x4 tracks in the Richtersveld, but they’re all extremely sandy and often rocky, so you need a high-clearance vehicle (and probably recovery equipment too). To be safe, you should also carry extra fuel, a tow rope, two spare tyres, a tyre repair kit, a decent jack – and maybe a bottle of whiskey.

Difficulty: Class 2-4, suitable for all skill levels and children above 8 years old. Starting near Pofadder, the best paddling on the Orange River offers a variety of conditions, from flat water with flowing channels, lots of exciting small rapids and a few ‘big ones’ to get the adrenaline flowing. At high water, it becomes an exciting white-water trip using inflatable two-person boats that are easy to paddle and steer. There are also rafts that are very stable and perfect for lessconfident paddlers (dependent on water level). The standard trip is three days and four nights – four-day, five-night trips are also available and longer expeditions can be arranged. The night before and after your river trip is spent at Red Rock River Camp on the banks of the Orange, with a ‘free’ camp for two nights on the river. You’ll cover a little more than 35 kilometres during the trip so there is ample time to relax, take photographs, read a book or explore. Each trip is a self-contained expedition and you’ll carry everything you need in and out again at the end.
www.onroutemag.co.za
A tent, inflatable mattress, pillow and sleeping bag will be provided and the guides will set up camp and prepare delicious meals, served at a table. South African wine will also be served with dinner. Drinks will be pre-ordered (for your own account) and kept on ice for you.

The trip starts out with flowing channels and flat water moving on to ‘Scorpion’ rapid. After more fun rapids you’ll take an evening walk to the amazing Ritchie Falls. The following day has challenging portage around the falls, undertaken by the whole group that lowers the boats into the gorge. Then experience the excitement of ‘42 man hole’, ‘Big Bunny’ and ‘Dolly Parton’ rapids, and paddle up underneath the waterfall. As you leave the gorge, things mellow out once again with mountains increasing in size around you.

TASTE EXPERIENCE WILD OATS COMMUNITY FARMERS’ MARKET WESTERN OUTSKIRTS OF SEDGEFIELD, JUST OFF N2 AND JAN VAN RIEBEECK ROAD, SEDGEFIELD Founders of the Wild Oats Market, established in 1999, Rose Brettell and Susan Garner believe that ‘country markets offer a healthy community-building opportunity’. ‘The Wild Oats cornerstones,’ they say, ‘are regional, fresh and healthy food as well as vendor honesty and reliability.’ Market sellers must be residents of the Garden Route, and food producers are urged to source ingredients from local growers where possible. Take breakfast in beautiful surroundings at this farmers’ market, where free-range meats, dairy products, lush produce, baked and bottled delicacies, flowers and plants are available. The market is open Saturdays throughout the year.

Location: Situated eight kilometres from the small town of Coffee Bay, on the Wild Coast of the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa, Hole in the Wall is a natural site as impressive as its big cousin Table Mountain. Geology: The cliffs of Hole in the Wall consist of dark-blue shales, mudstones and sandstones dating back 260 million years. These rocks were subsequently intruded by a dolerite sheet, and the ‘hole’ was created over millions of years by the buffeting waves, which eroded away the softer rocks underneath the dolerite to form an arch. The same process also eventually separated the cliff from the mainland.
Don’t Miss... Hole in the Wall is both an adventurous and cultural experience. You can enjoy the surrounds with hikes and biking trails through the hills, surf lessons off the coast, canoe trips down the Mthatha River to see mangrove forests, and then visit the local villages and communities, where you will be welcomed with open arms. Nature: Between July and December every year, the Eastern Cape coastline is frequented by southern right and humpback whales. DO GOOD – FEEL GOOD WANDA THE WATER WARRIOR – WATER SAVING CAMPAIGN Wanda The Water Warrior visited 200 schools across the Western Cape spreading her message about saving water and how to do it. Wanda’s show identifies 10 key water saving tips, which are highlighted and repeated with the learners, that also form part of a catchy tune the learners are taught. So when they walk up to a tap or brush their teeth, they have “I’m a water warrior” in their mind and this helps them to change their water behaviour surrounding water use.
Wanda The Water Warrior will now be continuing her water saving travels to the Eastern Cape where the current water status is at critical levels in certain parts of the region. It’s vitally important that the message reaches the larger community for everyone to understand the urgency of the water crisis. Keep a look out for her at your or your children’s school! For more visit www.wwwd.co.za
THE OTTER TRAIL: SCOTT’S EXPERIENCE The Otter Trail follows the spectacular Garden Route coastline from Storms River Mouth to Nature’s Valley in the Tsitsikamma National Park. Recently, Scott Forssman did the hike and shared the experience with OnRoute... The Otter Trail is certainly one of SA’s most beautiful hikes and a bucket list for any hiker. It’s five days long and covers around 50 kilometres along steep gradients, cliff edges and rocky boulders at sea level. Accommodation is fairly simple but adequate for up to 12 people. You sleep in log cabins which cater for six people each on triple bunk beds. There’s one toilet and a cold shower per destination and no electricity. Costs are around R1 220 as well as a conservation fee of R216 and there are plenty of write-ups and info on the web to be prepared.
You’ll traverse rocks, beaches, trails and river crossings, with opportunities to swim in the sea or lagoons. Your fitness should be moderate but most people would be capable. The only time constraint is when you need to cross the Bloukransrivier on Day 4 to make low tide. There’s very little to no cellphone reception, but there are escape routes should you need assistance or medical attention. A highlight on Day 3 was arriving at the Elandsbos river crossing where we played beach cricket in the open lagoon. A drawback would be the difficulty in getting gas canisters for cooking with, since you can’t fly with compressed gas. Only Outdoor Warehouse (George) had the variety you need. A contrasting hike to The Otter Trail would be the Sentinal hike up the chain ladders over the Drakensberg in winter, with a much higher altitude vs. sea level; cold vs. warm, and tents vs. cabins. But the views are just as stunning, being above the clouds, overlooking the white landscape. TOP TIP: Booking is essential and has to be pre-booked a year in advance. Visit www.sanparks.org for more.
Storms River reception, where you begin, is also full of information and where an introductory video will describe the fauna and flora, what to expect and what boots you should be wearing… too late if this priority didn’t cross your mind sooner! (After the hike, go down to the Nature’s Valley Inn for a drink and good burger, and you’ll see all the shoes that didn’t make it hanging from a tree!) You’ll be given a map with vital water information of distances, where you can fill up and where you shouldn’t as the water is unfortunately polluted from upstream shanty towns. TOP TIP: Take water drops rather than tablets as they taste better and work more effectively.

CINDY’S CHEESE-AND-CORN SAMOOSAS THE LITCHI ORCHARD FARMERS’ MARKET, UMHLALI Cindy Valayadam arrives at the market with armfuls of freshly harvested vegetables from her farm nearby, as well as a load of her famous bottled specialities. Then there are her savoury offerings: French pickle, basil-and-peanut chutney, brinjal pickle, and her hot and sweet mazavaroo, for which she is well known in Umhlali. But it is the spicy aroma of her cheese-and-corn samoosas gently cooking at her stall at The Litchi Orchard Farmers’ Market that draws me on this Saturday morning, just as the sun lights up the eastern sky. Warm and comforting, the vegetarian samoosas are just spicy enough, made with a delicate blend of home-grown chillies and a generous smattering of cheese added to the fresh corn. ZULULAND BATTLEFIELDS “Zululand” is the ancestral home of the Zulu people. It is the site of many a bloody battle between the British, the Afrikaaners, and the Zulus during the 19th century and is best explored as a self-drive adventure, although many tours are available. Almost every town in this area of northern KwaZulu-Natal has a story to tell or an event to commemorate and tourism offices throughout the region provide maps and guides to assist visitors in making the most of the history, culture, scenery and wildlife. The landscape varies from plains to rolling hills, river valleys to lush forests. This land once encompassed the Zulu Kingdom led by legendary Shaka Zulu, who clashed with the British and the Boers in many epic battles.
www.onroutemag.co.za
At the centre of the Zulu nation is the small town of Eshowe. King Shaka was born close to the town, and it was also the site of a 10-week siege during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Other towns of note are Ladysmith and Dundee, near which were fought the historic battles of Rorke’s Drift, Blood River and Isandlwana.

! N O I T C E S S D KI Have you ever heard of a Sunfish?
Sunfish are the largest bony fish in the ocean. They can grow up to 3m in length and approximately 2 000kg in weight. Ocean sunfish are found in all the oceans of the world, excluding the icy polar seas.

Customers who collect all 24 Little Garden seedling kits stand a chance of winning one of 20 Checkers vouchers worth R5 000. Additionally, three school choirs that enter and sing the best Checkers Little Garden song will win a share of R60 000 for their school. Lastly, customers who also buy any three participating brands stand a chance to win a food tour to Italy worth R100 000.
Visit www.checkerslittlegarden.co.za and find out more.
There are two species of sunfish found in the waters surrounding Cape Town: the ocean sunfish (Mola mola) and the sharptail sunfish (Masturuslanceolatus). Sharptail sunfishes are found only in warmer waters, thus they are extremely rare in the local waters. In recent years, a number of slender sunfish (Ranzania laevis) have also washed up on Cape Town beaches. These sunfish are believed to be the rarest of all sunfish species. Only ocean sunfishes have been displayed in the Two Oceans Aquarium. The Two Oceans Aquarium assists international researchers of sunfish with the collection of DNA samples when aquarium staff come across a sunfish in Cape Town waters.
Did you know? • Sunfishes are so called because of their habit of drifting at the surface as if basking in the sun. • Sunfishes do not have tails as other fishes do – the caudal (tail) fin has been replaced by a rudder-like structure. The ocean sunfish has a rounded, wavy rudder. The sharptail’s rudder, as the name suggests, has a distinct point. • All sunfishes have small mouths and the teeth are fused together in each jaw, forming a beak like that of a parrot. The beak is internal and hidden from view. • They are the most fertile of all fishes, producing up to 300 million tiny eggs. • The name ‘mola’ is derived from the Latin word for millstone because of their similar shape.
Smashers - the new collectables craze! Smash your red smashball and reveal which character is inside, then you can battle, collect and score with your Smashers - as each one has its own Smash Point Value. Series 1 is based on the world’s most popular sports, and it’s just in time for the FIFA World Cup! The range includes both “good” and “bad” sport characters, along with rare Sports and Golden Trophies, all of which appear in the Collector’s Guide and Game Sheet that accompanies the toys. Aimed at both pocket money and birthday money budgets, the range includes the Smashers one-pack, three-pack, eight-pack, and bigger Collector’s Tin and Smashers Team Bus. Hello Gauteng! In the Sotho languages Gauteng means “Place of Gold” and it’s the smallest province in South Africa, but also the wealthiest and most densely populated.

Gauteng is the economic centre of South Africa, generating an estimated third of our gross domestic product. As the distance between Joburg and Pretoria continues to shrink with rapid development and urbanisation, it’s predicted the cities will merge to form a new megacity by 2030.

DO GOOD – FEEL GOOD VOLUNTEERING MADE EASY! Described by media as “the Uber of volunteering” Better SA’s hop-on, hop-off volunteer bus service takes all the hassle out of volunteering. The service is free of charge and each experience is fully facilitated, ensuring that volunteers make the biggest impact in the time they have available. The only requirement from the volunteer is that they book a spot on one of the busses and then arrive and hop on. Better SA does the rest! The bus service runs every Saturday morning between 8am and 12pm from the following hubs: • From Illovo heading into Alexandra and surrounds • From Broadacres heading into Diepsloot • From Roodepoort heading into Soweto • From Midrand heading into Olievenhoutbosch When volunteers arrive at any of the hubs they’re greeted by Better SA team leaders who brief them on the community and organisation being visited and the volunteer activity everyone will be participating in. Once there, each volunteer is handed a pack complete with a step-by-step guide on how to complete the activity and all supplies needed. Volunteers spend 90 minutes at the organisation before boarding the bus and heading back to their cars. It doesn’t get easier than that! Volunteer activities include teaching computer skills, playing educational games, typing up hand-written CVs for the unemployed, visiting the elderly and environmental cleanups. Better SA offers many family-friendly activities and any kids over the age of 3 are welcome to join in.

PETS (Pet Empowerment in Townships) is a registered, non-profit, pro-active, pro-life animal rescue organisation that originated in Cape town in 2007. It was founded by Anoux Massey and a Johannesburg branch started in 2010 run under the same principles with Nicole Badenhorst heading up the team. The Johannesburg branch focuses on communities south of Joburg, such as those in Orange Farm and Walkerville.

PETS strives to empower animals in townships and poor communities and works with the community to improve the lives of these disadvantaged animals by giving them daily meals, warm shelters, regular inoculations, sterilisations and vet care in emergencies. They also rehome ones that are unwanted, unloved or lost. They try to instil in the communities a responsibility and pride for their animals by not just empowering them, but also by educating and helping the people to uplift themselves. They believe in working hand in hand with the animals and people of these impoverished areas to create unity, trust and stability for all. @PETS JHB, email jhb@pets.org.za Photo from the annual Santa Goodie Bag Drive courtesy of Philson Photography – high-quality furball and non-furball portraiture with 100% of proceeds going directly to Animal Rescue Charity book, to order see @PhilsonPhotography; www.philsonphotography.com

The gold-mining town of Carletonville, about 80 kilometres west of Joburg, is famous not only for its mine dumps but also for an array of parachutes floating down through the sky. In The Bucket List, a film starring Jack Nicholson and Morgan Freeman, the two men choose skydiving as one of the things they want to do before they die. Don’t wait.

But I did feel nervous excitement as the plane climbed nearly 3 300 metres into the sky. I told Marianne, who went skydiving as a student years ago, that it seemed like an insane activity. Nevertheless, I relaxed as soon as we exited the plane and were free-falling in the sky – our average speed was 201 kilometres per hour for the first 40 seconds. And once the parachute opened, the descent slowed suddenly to become silent and calm, until the landing.

GIVING A HOOT ABOUT CONSERVATION
Noticing a rapid decline in owl populations and realising that they have become one of the most common wildlife casualties in veterinary practices, husband and wife, Brendan and Danelle Murray, decided about 10 years ago to focus all their efforts on conserving them. The organisation, Owl Rescue Centre based in Hartbeespoort, now takes in hundreds of owls every year through their rescue efforts. Owl Rescue Centre is a non-profit company and registered rehabilitation facility that’s dedicated to the protection of owls in South Africa. Efforts aimed to decrease the risk factors to the owl species’ population are executed in ongoing owl conservation projects. One of their most recent projects involves recycling of plastic to manufacture conservation products such as owl houses.

TRAVEL LIMPOPO
Hello Limpopo! Limpopo borders Botswana, Zimbabwe and Mozambique and was formerly known as “Northern Province”. The name means “strong gushing waterfalls” in Sepedi. The Kruger National Park spreads across both the Limpopo and Mpumalanga provinces and is possibly SA’s best attraction for local and international tourists.
TASTE EXPERIENCE BUSHVELD STEAK RÖSTI The whole is more than the sum of its parts. This is not only true for the ingredients of this recipe, but also the role players in its creation: Ivor, Bernice, Ansu and Edrich. Although the end result of this recipe is very impressive, both visually and taste-wise, when you break it down into individual steps, every step is actually pretty straightforward. This recipe is as magnificent as a sunrise in the bushveld and equally photogenic. Braai it early in the morning with a fresh cup of coffee brewed on the fire before facing another tough day in Africa.
It doesn’t matter what you choose to call it, ultimately. Every South African understands what the significance of the braai is. This is where we come together to gossip, laugh, argue, debate and enjoy each other’s company. Long may it continue.

Then put the röstis into the pan, using a spatula to flatten each rösti by putting some pressure on it. Each rösti should be about 1–2 cm thick. Fry until golden brown on one side, then flip and fry until golden brown on the other side. This should take about 4 minutes a side over medium-hot heat but naturally, this time may vary. Your cue is a golden-brown colour. You only need to turn them once as turning them often increases the risk of them falling apart. Remove from the pan and keep aside.
DO THE WILDERNESS TRAILS SKILLS COURSE This unique six-day Wilderness Trails Skills course provides a perfect platform for aspirant or qualified guides or nature lovers to discover and reconnect with meaningful wilderness encounters and the wilderness itself. The course may challenge some personal boundaries as you’ll sleep in the wild under the stars, share wilderness experiences, and travel light with minimal supplies. It’s certainly more about depth than distance! The backdrop, of course, is traversing some of the finest and most remote wilderness regions of southern Africa on foot. While there are no formal subjects or lectures, the emphasis of the course lies in meaningful wilderness philosophy, lowimpact guiding skills and bush lore.
The adventures are instructed by some of the most experienced trainers/guides in Africa, with a choice of stunning venues within the Makuleke Concession in the Kruger National Park. Lessons taught will not be found in any book, but learning will be “hands-on”. Lessons include wilderness appreciation and the MIA (Minimal Impact Approach), situational awareness, setting up eco-friendly camps, and water purification and ‘leaving no trace’ are but a few of the advanced skills you will learn. www.ecotraining.co.za or www.dirtyboots.co.za, email enquiries@ecotraining.co.za, call 013 752 2532
4. Season the steak with salt and pepper and then braai the steak over very hot coals for about 8 minutes in total until medium rare. Once the steak is done, let it rest for a few minutes before you carve it into thin slices. 5. While the steak is resting, place the spinach in the pan. We’re looking to wilt the spinach. Do not overcook the spinach – stir-fry and then remove from the heat and pan as soon as the leaves start to wilt. 6. Heat oil in your pan again and fry the eggs until they are cooked to your liking. I suggest you go sunny side up with this recipe. 7. Build your bushveld rösti by starting with the rösti, then topping it with spinach, the steak slices, and finally the egg.

Lapalala Wilderness School was started in 1985 and has existed as a non-profit organisation (NPO) since 2005 – it therefore already has a long history in Environmental Education (EE) in particular and aims to increase capacity in four current focal areas of activity – namely
1. Improving the quality of educators (teachers from all South African schools), particularly in the field of EE, through teacher workshop programmes and also through school visitations; 2. Increasing environmental awareness and developing sound environmental practices amongst learners (schoolchildren from all walks of life) through the continued development and servicing of the internationally recognised Eco-Schools Programme; 3. Developing and mentoring promising youth with leadership potential in rural communities through a Youth Development Programme (YDP); and, 4. Leadership Seminars to promote an understanding and appreciation of the vital importance of the biodiversity sector amongst key decision-makers, linking this to opportunities for fulfilling work that will contribute to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. In all focal areas, the emphasis of projects at LWS has been on EE, but also on individual selfempowerment and social upliftment, recognising that socio-economic issues are inextricably linked to environmental ones. It costs R375 per person per night to participate in the Environmental Education Programme, which includes activities, accommodation and meals. To book, email lws@lwschool.org, or call 0828873912. TRAVEL LIMPOPO
ON-A-BUDGET THRILL LIMPOPO HIKES SOUTPANSBERG: ANCIENT KINGDOMS South Africa’s northern-most mountain range, the Soutpansberg, often gets overlooked in favour of the more imposing Drakensberg. But like the reclusive cousin at a family gathering, the Soutpansberg has its own charms if you take the time to explore them. Extending 130 kilometres from west to east, the Soutpansberg has sheltered people for centuries, with the San and Venda inhabitants leaving behind relics of their civilisations in its hills and caves. Besides the rock art, you can visit well-known archaeological sites, such as the former mountain kingdom of Thulamela, west of Pafuri, or discover hidden traces of the past. We went walking in the Luonde Mountain Reserve, on the upper slopes of Luonde Mountain (formerly called Piesang Kop), and deep in the forest came across ruined dwellings, which were, according to Wits University researchers, the outposts of the ancient Zimbabwean empire. The six crumbling stone walls and enclosures are protected, and walks to this site require a guide.
One of the recommended birding sites is the 9 300-hectare Blouberg Nature Reserve (close to Casteel), which has a steep, 400-metre wall that ranks as one of the premier rock-climbing destinations in South Africa. The climbing routes at Blouberg are excellent, and when you climb in this remote region, you are more likely to spot Cape vultures than people. The Blouberg Wilderness guided hiking trail opened in 2012 in the Blouberg Nature Reserve. KuneMoya manages this reserve, which has one of the biggest Cape vulture colonies and best vulture viewing points in the country. A so-called vulture restaurant (a feeding site for these endangered birds) affords visitors close-up observation. The baobabs, tamboti woodland, fig forest and the Brak River floodplain are among the distinctive features KuneMoya lists in the reserve... These trees command your attention with their massive girth, witchlike branches and upside-down appearance, and we decided to follow the Baobab Meander route in Limpopo, near Musina. These giants are increasingly threatened, despite legislation protecting them...
WHEN TO GO The Soutpansberg is wetter in summer than winter. Yet it tends to be a relatively dry region without extreme temperatures, making it suitable to visit all year round.

A trail to a viewpoint near the top of Luonde is shown by coloured markings on rocks and trees. The Luonde Mountain Reserve belongs to several farmers. The owners of the Molozi farmstead, where we stayed as guests, have organised more than 50 surveys on the trees, shrubs, animals, birds and snakes found in the reserve. The Vhembe Biosphere is registered by UNESCO.
52
Historical sites are only one of the attractions of this region. Tree and bird species abound, as we observed while hiking through the dappled Luonde Forest, which can become shrouded in mist. Soutpansberg Tourism says the sprawling range of hills has no less than 555 tree species – you can find 145 species at the Indigenous Tree Sanctuary in Makhado (Louis Trichardt) and about 540 types of birds. The number of birds is hardly surprising given the range of habitats here, from grasslands to different types of forest, acacia thornveld and riverine terrain. Among the birds we saw were the purple turaco, the scarlet-chested sunbird, the blackbreasted snake eagle, the grey-headed bushshrike, the African paradise flycatcher, the golden-tailed woodpecker and the black-headed oriole.
• Access to the Luonde Mountain Reserve can be arranged through the Molozi forestry manager. Tel 082 901 2899 • Blouberg Nature Reserve: rates per adult R30, per child R15, per vehicle R30. Tel 078 869 5240, web www.bloubergreserve.co.za; email info@kunemoya.co.za • To follow the scenic Baobab Meander, turn off the N1 towards Tshipise, north of Polokwane but before Musina (formerly Messina). You can visit the Baobab Tree Reserve at Musina.

TEENS’ & 20s’ CLUB MOHOLOHOLO WILDLIFE REHABILITATION CENTRE STUDENT VOLUNTEERS Situated at the base of the majestic north-eastern Lowveld Drakensberg mountain range, Moholoholo offers a unique experience to nature enthusiasts. Since 1998 the Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre (the “Rehab”) has been giving volunteer students from SA and all over the world a unique African experience. They’re involved in day-to-day activities and become a pivotal part of the care and treatment of wild animals and raptors. With the difficult decision of what to do with an injured or poisoned animal that can’t be released back into the wild, a number of “permanent residents” become ambassadors for their species. Resident animals range from eagles, vultures, servals and honey badgers to lions, leopards, wild dogs and hyenas. During visits to the Rehab, you can experience these incredible creatures first-hand, and learn more about the problems facing wildlife.
Moholoholo is also actively involved in research on the movements and behaviour of leopards. To date, they’ve captured and collared a number of leopards and the results have been astounding. Volunteer students might be lucky enough to be involved in this. Research also extends to vulture species that are monitored at the vulture “restaurant” on a daily basis.
Working with wild animals means you’ll need to be prepared for the unexpected… However, this is what will make your experience here that much more memorable! The minimum age to volunteer is 18 years old and 17, on request. A cost of R600 per night includes three meals and transport, and a minimum of two weeks at Moholoholo is required to get maximum benefit from the project. Transfers from Hoedspruit airport cost R500 per person, and Hoedspruit town is R300 per person.
Images supplied
Students’ duties consist of caring for the animals and involves feeding and cleaning (which can be hard work), and providing stimulation for the more intelligent residents (like the honey badgers). Volunteer students could be involved in call-outs, drop-offs or even hand-raising baby animals.

THE FOREST While the lift itself was a feat of engineering mastery to construct, getting to the Afromontane forest below is at the heart and the very reason for its existence. In South Africa, Afromontane forests cover only 0.5% of the country’s land area. They occur in pockets along mountain ranges in well-watered areas, including ravines and south-facing slopes. Under the vivid green canopy of trees lies a lush wonderland filled with a spectacular variety of plants, animals, insects and birds.

1. Put the meat in a bowl and add the salt and pepper. Toss well and now add the lemon juice, amasi and turmeric. Mix everything together and let it chill out until such time as a future step of this recipe calls for it to come and play. It can chill out like this for a few minutes but also for a few hours, in which case you need to let it chill out inside your fridge. 2. Add the oil and onions to your currently clean and empty potjie. Give that potjie some flaming gees by putting it on your fire. Fry the onions until translucent. 3. Now add all of the spices, including the garlic, ginger and chilli, and fry for a minute or two until they smell fragrant and start to brown. Proceed to the next step before the spices burn. 4. Add the meat and all its marinating friends to the potjie. Mix it all and bring the meat to a simmer. Let it be in this state of blissful simmer for around 10 minutes.
6. During this time of cooking, you may want to lift the lid occasionally, run your wooden spoon along the bottom of the potjie and check that nothing is burning. In the off chance that the potjie is running dry and in fact wants to burn, add a bit of water or reduce the heat under the potjie so it simmers less aggressively – or perhaps even both of these options. Never add too much extra water as we are not making soup. 7. After 2 hours of simmering, our aim is to have a curry with perfect consistency so if you’re not quite getting there, let it simmer without the lid until you are happy with the situation. ‘Happy with the situation’ means the meat is tender and coming off the bone when encouraged to do so with a fork. It also means you are happy with the consistency of the sauce. AND … Serve with rice or roosterkoek.

5. Next, add the potatoes, carrots, tomatoes and apricot jam. Toss everything until evenly mixed, put the lid on the potjie and let it simmer for 2 hours.

TRAVEL FREE STATE
AFRICAN-STYLE RUM The only time the Whistler is big on rules is when it comes to making African-style rum... The first step in making Whistler is combining molasses from KwaZulu-Natal with brown sugar from Swaziland, filtered artesian water and a special yeast to produce a strong sugar beer. The sugar beer is then distilled in a pot still with a reflux column – all designed and built in South Africa.
A SNIFTER AT THE WHISTLER Situated in the heart of the Free State, Whistler is a small-batch rum distillery on the R70 between Riebeeckstad and Henneman. The distillery is open to the public the last weekend of everything month. During open weekends visitors are treated to tastings and delicious meat-based dishes, like pulled smoked pork and relish on cornbread, prepared in the farm’s very own smoker. Even though the distillery was launched less than a year ago, it has quickly grown into what’s arguably the biggest rum distillery in South Africa. A true gem and a must-visit (with the pre-requisite of a designated driver!)
The distillate is then pre-matured on new French and American toasted oak before maturing in a combination of whiskey and brandy barrels that were previously used to mature spirits in the Western Cape. Being for and by Africans, Whistler developed and trademarked the “African-style rum” methodology which arrives at their Spice-infused Rum and Dark Rum. While Whistler is made in the much-underrated setting of the Free State at the Whistler Distillery, you will find it in select liquor retailers. For more visit www.whistlerrum.co.za.

THE VREDEFORT DOME AND PARYS When in the Free State, be sure to take a turn at the Vredefort Dome – the world’s biggest meteor crater as well as the oldest and most deeply eroded – where a huge meteorite hit the earth some two billion years ago. Scientists estimate the original crater to have been 300 kilometres in diameter and today, what remains is a partial ring of hills 70 kilometres in diameter. It lies close to the Free State town of Parys, and what’s most noteworthy about the town is that it’s situated within the Vredefort Dome Conservancy on the southern banks of the Vaal River in the northern Free State. The Vaal River flows through the crater and makes Parys a picturesque little town.
WHEN IN PARYS... • Parys is part of the Free State Lion Route, so be sure to book a game drive. • Parys is a bird-watcher’s paradise with more than 250 different bird species in and around the area. Your chance of a spotting a fish eagle here is very good!

DO GOOD – FEEL GOOD ROAD SAFETY FOR KIDS Active Education in conjunction with Imperial Road Safety has developed the Safe Scholars Programme to ensure that children are educated in road safety awareness, in order to have a generation of responsible pedestrians and, in the future, drivers. They come and visit your school with a fun and interactive roadshow where all pupils are included and introduced to various aspects of road safety. Bongie the Bush Baby is one of the Buckle Up Buddies, Imperial’s Road Safety ambassadors, who teach kids about the importance of road safety in a fun way. One of the major issues is visibility of learners on the road and with the programme comes the opportunity to sponsor reflective sashes which are worn by students. This initiative allows local as well as national businesses to touch and save lives. The Safe Scholars Programme has reached 1.3 million learners and 1 455 schools to date! To get involved, email info@activeeducation.co.za or visit www.activeeducation.co.za.
