Fascinating Accommodation

These weird-and-wonderful hotels give a unique perspective of their countries’ natural heritage.

NEST ON A CLIFF IN PERU Skylodge Adventure Suites is located in the Sacred Valley in Cusco in Peru. Fly in to Cusco Airport and it’s approximately a two-hour drive by car to the mountain cliffside pod accommodation, the brainchild of Ario Ferri, owner of the bird’s-eye view concept lodge. Skylodge is comprised of three cosy pods with a maximum capacity of four people in each pod. There’s also a meal pod where breakfast and dinner are served, included in the overnight rate. A lunch experience day tour is also on offer.

www.onroutemag.co.za

To get up to the Skylodge, you climb 400 metres by the Via Ferrata (Italian for “iron path”, which are climbing handles/steps affixed to the rocky cliff) or you can hike up which takes about 50 minutes.

2

There’s also a thrilling zipline trail to enjoy the incredible views, if you climb the Via Ferrata or take the uphill hike. Kids from eight years old can zipline, but only over 18s are permitted to stay at Skylodge for safety reasons. Depending on how you get to your pod for a night’s stay, prices vary from S/. 1 335 to S/. 1 425 (soles are Peruvian currency and 1 sol = R4.35). www.naturavive.com (view a video experience of Skylodge) info@naturavive.com Call +51 951 373240

Conrad Maldives Rangali Island, Muraka villa, undersea bedroom

SLEEP UNDER THE SEA IN THE MALDIVES Skylodge Adventure Suites, Sacred Valley, Cusco, Peru

The Conrad Maldives Rangali Island’s first underwater villa, Muraka (“coral” in Dhivehi, the local language of the Maldives) will be fully operational in November. It’ll be a unique, luxurious two-level villa that comprises an above-sea residence and an undersea level completely immersed in the ocean, allowing you to enjoy an unobstructed, 180-degree panoramic view of coral and marine life in its natural surroundings and to sleep under the ocean’s surface! Unsurprisingly, this concept originated from the very team that created Ithaa, the world’s first undersea restaurant launched 13 years ago at Conrad Maldives, comprising the Maldives’ first qualified, professionally trained architect and project director Ahmed Saleem and Aucklandbased civil engineer, Mike Murphy, whose company specialises in aquarium design. Award-winning Japanese architect Yuji

Yamazaki designed its clutter-free interior space so you can be fully immersed in the wonders of the Indian Ocean. Conrad Maldives is located in South Ari Atoll, approximately 95 kilometres from the capital. The resort can be reached by a scenic 30-minute seaplane journey from the international airport. A luxury cruise transfer can also be arranged for up to 15 guests on one of their yachts. The transfer takes approximately three hours and cruises from Malé through the atolls directly to Rangali Island. The hyper-personalised exclusivity and uniqueness of The Muraka mean a definitive rate isn’t placed on the experience of staying here and is done in consultation with The Muraka personnel team. www.conradmaldives.com TheMuraka@conradhotels.com +960 668 0629

Guests enter the enormous dog inn’s torso from the private second-storey deck, and inside and up another level in the head is a loft room with a cosy alcove in the muzzle. DISCOVER EARTHSHIP BIOTECTURE IN NEW MEXICO Earthship abodes have six basic design principles that use existing natural phenomena: 1. THEY’RE BUILT WITH NATURAL AND REPURPOSED MATERIALS Tyres are the perfect form for a “rammed-earth brick” and can be seen as a globally available “natural” resource. Bottle brick walls are also a standout feature of many Earthships. Interior walls are packed out between the tyres and plastered with adobe mud. Mud is also used for floors, and reclaimed wood and metal often feature. 2. THERMAL/SOLAR HEATING AND COOLING The main essence of Earthship structures is that they heat and cool themselves without electric heat, burning fossil fuels or wood. 3. SOLAR AND WIND ELECTRICITY Every building has its own renewable “power plant” with photovoltaic panels, batteries, charge controller and inverter.

Michael Reynolds created this concept in 1969, and early buildings used discarded steel or tin beer cans, seen as “garbage” since it was before recycling existed. Interestingly, houses now built with earthrammed tyres are so strong that they don’t even need foundations; and recently some modern comforts like TV, streaming Netflix and Wi-Fi have been added. Hire a home at Earthship’s world headquarters in Taos (an hour-and-a-half or three-hour drive from the airport in Santa Fe or Albuquerque, respectively) from about R2 000 - R5 880 per night, depending on the building size and occupancy.

4. WATER HARVESTING Earthships collect all water needed from rain and snowmelt on the roof and stores it in cisterns.

Earthship Phoenix main bedroom

5. CONTAINED SEWAGE TREATMENT Every drop of water that lands on an Earthship roof is used four times, so homes can subsist and even thrive without taking water from the ground or municipal sources. 6. FOOD PRODUCTION Interior, in-home, organic food production is the most recent design principle added to the Earthship concept. Earthship Vallecitos interior garden

RiverSafari REASONS TO GO ON A

Without needing much reason to go and see southern Africa, here are some alternative ideas to make it a reality...

W

www.onroutemag.co.za

hen you picture going on safari, you probably think about driving in an open safari vehicle through the wide open spaces of the African bush, or watching the sunset over the arid landscape from the deck of your bush camp. But for something completely different that makes for a truly unforgettable bush experience, you may want to consider going on a river safari.

8

Content and images: the Zambezi Queen Collection

www.onroutemag.co.za

A river safari where you float down the river in your houseboat (or tender boat if you’re on a day expedition) with the engine turned off makes for a really tranquil game viewing experience.

9

SOUTHERN AFRICAN TRAVEL

HERE ARE 9 REASONS TO GO: 1. GREAT GAME VIEWING Rivers are essential to sustaining life in the bush, and their oasis of greenery amid the dry bush attracts high concentrations of wildlife in search of water. For you as a river safari game viewer, that means incredible game viewing up close and personal, with the Big 5 and more. Depending on the season, you may be lucky enough to see newborn impala, wildebeest and zebra drinking from the river. Predator sightings are also more frequent near the water, so you may have a better chance of seeing lions, rare packs of wild dogs and elusive leopards stalk their prey. 2. A UNIQUE PERSPECTIVE Watching game from the water instead of land gives you unique (and often much closer up) views of the game descending there to drink and play. Being so close to the animals who stay in one place as they drink makes for fantastic photographic opportunities too.

Fishing from a tender boat and watching elephants

3. YEAR-ROUND SIGHTINGS During the dry winter months when the inland watering holes dry up, vast numbers of animals descend on the river to drink. If you’re on a river safari, this means a front row seat for game viewing. You’ll also be much more likely to see year-round riverine wildlife such as crocodiles and hippos. 4. GREAT FOR ELEPHANT VIEWINGS Elephants love water and can often be seen swimming and frolicking in the river – sometimes in huge herds. On a river safari, you’re in the perfect position to see elephants of all ages, whether it’s newborns taking their first dip or older males asserting their dominance among each other.

5. IT’S TRANQUIL A river safari where you float down the river in your houseboat (or tender boat if you’re on a day expedition) with the engine turned off makes for a really tranquil game viewing experience. And, the quieter you are, the less disturbance there is, which means it’s more likely you’ll be able to hear and spot the incredibly varied game and birdlife that surrounds you.

Up-close-and-personal big game viewing

Catch of the day!

Content and images: the Zambezi Queen Collection Chobe Princess cabin

6. A MORE RELAXED HOLIDAY A traditional land-based safari typically means a very early morning start, as you head off on game drives before the sun rises for the best chance of spotting game. On a river safari, you’ll enjoy a later start, as animals come down to the water after sunrise. If you’re truly looking to relax and recharge while you’re in the bush, this is a major bonus! 7. A MORE PERSONAL EXPERIENCE Because a river safari is relatively unusual, there’s minimal congestion on the river compared with a land-based safari, where you could be surrounded by a dozen other vehicles gathered around a sighting. This makes it that much more exclusive and personal as far as safari experiences go. A river safari is highly relaxing and personal, with excellent game viewing opportunities. Companies like the Zambezi Queen Collection offer incredible houseboat safaris. With only a small number of guests per boat, staying on one of their three Chobe Princesses is like being on your very own houseboat. The entire boat can also be booked exclusively, giving you your very own private villa on the water.

9. GREAT BIRDWATCHING While spotting big game is undoubtedly the highlight of going on safari, birdwatching in the bush is hugely rewarding too. Being on a river safari means you’re close to the huge amount of bird species that live on and near rivers – and, during the wet season, huge migrations mean the bird population increases even further. You’ll be in for a treat when it comes to spotting water-based birds, whether it’s fish eagles, storks or ibises.

8. IT’S FISHING HEAVEN If you’re on a river such as the Chobe in Botswana, this means world-class fishing opportunities right on your doorstep. Depending on when you go, you can try your hand at catching tigerfish, bream, African pike, tilapia, catfish or upper Zambezi yellowfish from the comfort of your water-based accommodation. BLINK AND YOU’LL MISS IT A Bible and telephone from the turn of the century

Boekenhoutfontein farm was declared a national monument in 1971

STEP BACK IN TIME AT THE PAUL KRUGER COUNTRY HOUSE MUSEUM R565, RUSTENBURG Stephanus Johannes Paulus Kruger or ‘Oom Paul’ was state president of the old Zuid-Afrikaanse Republiek. Before he gained acclaim as the face of Boer resistance against the British during the South African War (1899-1902), he was a successful farmer who owned and worked several farms in the Rustenburg district. One of these farms was Boekenhoutfontein, whose buildings were devastated by the British during the Boer War. The farm passed to Kruger’s descendants following his death in 1904 and was declared a national monument in 1971. It has since been restored and is now home to the Paul Kruger Country House Museum, and Kedar Heritage Lodge, Conference Centre & Spa on a game-fenced 1 200 acres populated with game including eland, blesbok, impala, bushbuck, nyala, kudu, zebra, blue wildebeest, giraffe and sable.

ABOUT THE MUSEUM Images supplied

The collection of unique historic buildings offers a fascinating insight into a time when South Africa was locked in a struggle for sovereignty with the British Empire. The monuments pay tribute to the fighting men of the Anglo Boer War and were created by renowned South African artist Adam Madebe. Kruger’s rifle is on display, as are his many bibles, the bellows organ that was played by his wife, as well as numerous gifts given to him by visiting state dignitaries. Family graves can be found in the nearby koppies where he hid his horses from British forces. Enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants (The Armoury restaurant, The Boma and Heroes’ Bar), or stay overnight at the Lodge at Kedar that offers the President’s Passport to the Past Special – A guided tour of Paul Kruger Country House Museum and other memorials including Sol Plaatje, Gandhi and Emily Back to mention a few, plus a chicken burger and soft drink – R100 per person (discounts applicable for groups of more than 20 people). NEW HOLIDAY READS BY LOCAL AUTHORS An Unquiet Place is a debut by Clare Houston. A woman finds the diary of a young girl that dates to the days leading up to the Anglo Boer War and the war itself. In it, young Rachel tells of the boy she likes, her family – and how they got split up, sent to different camps. An unexpected but very realistic twist will leave you reeling. R260 Green as the Sky is Blue is the English translation of Eben Venter’s Groen soos die Hemel Daarbo, which recently won the Hofmeyr Prize. Simon, an exiled Afrikaans writer, is a man of the world who lives a life of freedom and unfettered pleasure in Australia. But his ageing mother has the most tenacious grip on Simon. She’s adored and wise, yet unbearable for her fits of pettiness and bourgeois racism. R260

The Theory of Flight is a debut by Zimbabwean author Siphiwe Ndlovu, written in a magical realism style – much like Isabel Allende and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. It’s set in an unnamed country (Zim) and tells the story of Genie, from her childhood during the civil war, to her days on the streets and the love she found there. The author’s light approach counters the seriousness of the issues she addresses. R270 The Last Stop Safari Shop by Zambian-born Clair Cholajda is set in South Africa, Zimbabwe and Tanzania in the late 1980s and 90s. It charts the crossing of paths of Marius from Cape Town, Astrid, a young Swiss woman and Evelyn, a Rhodesian war widow. Under the transformative power of the ‘Africa-ness’ of Africa, the three unlikely friends begin to heal. R250 Books are available at leading bookstores.

MOTORING

EVOLUTION OF THE

PEOPLE’S CARS A quick journey through time…

T

Owned by the Volkswagen Aktiengessellschaft in Germany, Volkswagen Group South Africa (VWSA) is based in Uitenhage, an industrial town some 35 kilometres from Port Elizabeth within the Nelson Mandela Bay Metropol. Opened in 1946, the plant was initially called SAMAD (South African Motor Assemblers and Distributors) for the local assembly of Studebaker cars and commercial vehicles.

And who could forget the famous Red, Yellow, Blue Citi Golf ads, or the aerial views of VW’s thousands of staff and vehicles – sprawled out in the shape of the logo – in the “People’s Cars” ads, or the father proudly handing over the keys to his beloved Beetle to his son?

SAMAD’s first MD, Melville Steele Brooks and chairman Baron Klaus von Oertzen, couldn’t have predicted how Volkswagen would grow from a small company with big dreams, and flourish over the next 67 years – not only building Volkswagens and Audis, but Da also Austins, Volvos and Jeeps during the vid Kr early years. am

The ads alone are the pop culture of a collective South African past. But a quick glance around town will tell you VW cars’ cool factor attraction is as strong now as it was ever, especially with the shiny new buses and Beetles possibly showing the most striking transformation in their modernisation.

The first Beetle rolled off the production line in Uitenhage in 1951 and until the end of production in 1979, 290 000 of the iconic Beetles were sold in South Africa. For 11 of those 28 years, it was the top-selling vehicle in the country. Another legend, the Golf 1, was launched in 1979 and until the end of its life cycle in 2009, 517 384 A1 Golfs were built in Uitenhage. The Volksie passenger “Microbus” first graced us with its power to transport an extended family in the 50s and to date over 10 million of these legendary people movers in various models have been produced and sold worldwide!

Unsurprisingly, for the last seven consecutive years, VWSA has been the leader in the SA passenger vehicle market. The company’s humble cars that became giants in the motoring world have defined the lives of generations of South Africans, a trend which looks set to continue well into the future.

THE IMPORTANCE OF RECYCLING We should keep South Africa as beautiful as it is by recycling wherever possible. You may think it won’t make a difference, but just look at these figures to see how it really does! • In 2016, 68.4% of recoverable paper was recycled – recoverable paper excludes the likes of books and archived records, and items that are contaminated or destroyed when used, like tissue hygiene products and cigarette paper. • Recycling is a space saver: one tonne of paper saves three cubic metres of landfill space – and the associated costs. • The 1.4 million tonnes of recyclable paper and paper packaging diverted from landfill in 2016 is the equivalent in weight of 280 000 African elephants. The same volume would cover 254 soccer fields or fill 1 680 Olympic-sized swimming pools!

RECYCLING AT HOME • If possible, have a few paper bins around the house. • If the waste collectors don’t take recycling in your area drop it off at a nearby recycling depot. • Get your mom and dad to keep a box or crate in their car to do a weekly drop-off on the way to work or at school. • Make family, friends and visitors aware that you recycle.

GOLDEN RULES FOR PAPER RECYCLING

RECYCLING AT SCHOOL

As a starting point, it is important to remember paper recycling’s five golden rules:

• Enrol in a paper recycling programme and raise funds for your school.

1. Get to know what paper products are recyclable and which are not.

• Bring your home paper to school and put it in the paper recycling bins.

2. Separate your recyclables from wet waste. Paper items that are wet (used paper plates) or soiled (tissues and disposable nappies) cannot be recycled.

• Place clearly marked, brightly coloured recycling receptacles in classrooms and on the school grounds.

3. Take a second to separate any non-paper packaging from paper or cardboard.

• Contact PRASA for a presentation to share the value of recycling with teachers and learners.

4. Always keep paper clean and dry as this ensures a quality fibre for use in making new products. 5. Invest in or make a paper-only bin or box for easy sorting.

• Get friends and family to recycle too.

Fold Lines

The Paper Recycling Association of South Africa (PRASA) calls on all South Africans to do their bit by recycling paper products at school, home and work for drop-off at local recycling depots or gathering by collectors who earn a living by selling it back to mills. Trips can include camping, hiking, mountain biking, canoeing, history talks, farm tours and horse riding. Each journey is tailored to achieve the specific goals of the school. ugar Bay, a top holiday destination for kids, was the first Americanstyle summer camp in South Africa. It’s open every school holiday to kids between 7-17 years old, and airport transfers from King Shaka International Airport allow children from all over the world to enjoy a tropical beach holiday without their parents. Situated in Zinkwazi Beach just 30 kilometres north of Ballito, it prides itself on facilities like a 25-metre pool with three waterslides, a paintball arena, indoor sports hall, theatre, obstacle course and a waterfront with access to the lagoon and beach. Kids can choose from over 100 activities – some favourites including paintball, surfing, bungee trampoline, skateboarding, kayaking, rock wall climbing, BMX, ziplining and dance lessons. With no “compulsory” activities, kids are free to decide how they spend their holiday.

www.onroutemag.co.za

Kids are welcomed by superheroes, cartoon characters, or whatever the unique theme for the holiday calls for, in an entirely new and imaginative setting from their previous visits, if they’re holidaying at Sugar Bay again. Children sleep in spacious wooden cabins with en-suite bathrooms, allocated according to age and gender. The cost of a typical seven-day camp includes accommodation, activities, three meals per day.

LOCAL TRAVEL

THE BLUE TRAIN The Blue Train was brought into being in the 1920s with a dream of travelling from Africa’s southern- to northernmost tip. The two original trains, known then as the Union Limited and the Union Express, meandered their way as far as the Great African Railway would allow – a bridge straddling the Zambezi River, showered by the “thunderous smoke” of the Victoria Falls. As news of the discovery of gold and diamonds travelled afar, thousands flocked to South Africa’s Witwatersrand (“ridge of white waters”). The railway lines became utilitarian, ferrying society on the move. But the ridge’s mineral wealth soon funded a burgeoning upper class that came to expect a more opulent travel, and the Union carriages became standard bearers of the easy-living heyday. After being pressed into military service during World War II, The Blue Train was reincarnated in 1946 in its distinctive royal blue and cream shades. A 70s refurbishment and modernisation from steam to electricity and diesel in the 90s defined it as an unmatched experience of luxurious modern travel, all the while reminiscent of the romance and history of its past.

LOCAL TRAVEL This enormous 2 000-hectare body of water is a Ramsar site and refuge to globally threatened bird species that include migratory and inland water birds. The reserve is, for all intents and purposes, divided in two – the southern part ideal for birding, while the northern section is reserved for angling and boating. It is the birds that steal the show, however. Literally thousands of birds, including flamingos, African spoonbills and pelicans make the protected wetlands their home, and well-positioned bird hides make for easy viewing.

One of the largest waterfowl sanctuaries in southern Africa.

The Ramsar Convention on Wetlands of International Importance is an international treaty for the conservation and sustainable use of wetlands. It is also known as the Convention on Wetlands. Barberspan Nature Reserve entrance fee R50 per adult/R25 kids/ R25 pensioners. There is a R20 angling fee for fishermen. Call 078 536 0561 or email barberspan@lantic.net

The Baviaans Camino is a four-day hiking trail over the Baviaanskloof and Kouga Mountain Range, following ancient roads and footpaths. The trail is unique as it can be done by foot or on horseback. It is only available between April and October on fixed dates and groups are limited to 16. The trail is an 85 kilometre north-south route, starting outside Steytlerville in the Klein Karoo and ending just outside the small Tsitsikamma town, Kareedouw. The chance to see other people is slim, and with no cellphone reception, you have time to focus on yourself and the beauty around you. It’s fully catered (breakfast, packed lunch and a cooked dinner) with accommodation in farmhouses and tents. Hikers have to be willing to share bedrooms/tents and bathrooms. “It’s absolute bliss. A spiritual journey where you will reconnect with your inner self. Come prepared, you will conquer a few mountains,” says Esti Stewart from Baviaans Camino. FUN FACTS

The Moses Mabhida Stadium is impressive, particularly when you’re standing on a narrow ledge near the top, getting ready to jump across the pitch far below. My decision to do the big swing was impulsive. When I realised we could ascend in the sky car, climb the steps of the soaring arch to do the jump and be allowed to walk across the pitch at the end, it just seemed like a good idea. Big Rush Urban Adrenaline, which started operating in February 2010, claims theirs is the only stadium swing, and the highest swing in the world. ‘Jump into the void 106 metres above the World Cup football pitch and swing out in a huge 220-metre arc under the iconic arch’, is their siren cry. It’s all true: the void, the adrenalin and the sensational swing. After I’d signed up, my guide locked me into a full-body harness. Then we walked towards the sky car, which takes up to 20 passengers. The sky car rose on the sea-facing side of the arch to a viewing platform. We exited the wide platform onto the steps of the arch. (On the south side, you can do a 550-step adventure walk along the 350-metre arch, secured by a cable.) We walked towards a platform below us. From the steps, I climbed down a ladder onto a metal platform. Luckily for me, the Big Rush team were well organised and I didn’t have to wait to jump. I know from experience the easiest way to bungee or king swing is not to think twice about it.

So after looking out over the pitch and feeling a surge of adrenalin, I leapt out. It was both exhilarating and peaceful once I was flying through the air. Too soon, the guides hauled me up to the platform and we descended the remaining steps to the ground. To exit, we were allowed to walk across the pitch of the stadium, named after a former leader of the South African Communist Party...

PRICES Big Rush Big Swing: R695 per person Video & photos package: R200 each Spectator tickets: R30 per person – children under the age of 12 don’t pay for spectator tickets; spectator seats are inside the stadium. Sky Car tickets: R60 per adult; children under 12, R30; children under six free The cars run from 9am–4.30pm Adventure Walk tickets: R90 – children must be over 10 The Adventure Walk only is available on Saturdays and Sundays www.mmstadium.com/attractions, call 031 322 9955

Certified by Guinness World Records as “World’s Tallest Swing” (since 14 May 2011). If two average-sized elephants wanted to jump they could due to the breaking strain of the jump rope. The Statue of Liberty can fit beneath the rope attachment point at the top of the arch. The total mass of the jump rope is 48kgs which is similar to a baby rhino. If the jump rope is laid out, it will cover a space of 7.5 square metres.

WILD KAROO – 4X4 IN THE KAROO NATIONAL PARK Mitch Reardon worked as a ranger in South Africa and Namibia before becoming a wildlife photographer and writer. The Karoo National Park is conveniently located off the N1, near Beaufort West. The main rest camp has 19 self-catering two-bed chalets, eight six-bed family units, and 10 one bedroom (double-bed) cottages. There are also 24 award-winning camping and caravan sites...

Storm clouds loom over the Karoo National Park’s main rest camp. The valley containing the camp is encircled by the Nuweveld Mountains, which form part of the Great Escarpment. LOCAL TRAVEL

CELEBRATING THE KAROO...

A FARM TO TABLE EXPERIENCE IN THE KAROO WITH LANI & LOUZEL OF MKR SA FAME! Lani & Louzel are a mom and daughter cooking duo with an immense passion for the Karoo and its people. They believe one of the best ways Karoo heritage and hospitality can be shared is through food... they celebrate this with their combined talent and love for cooking! You might recognise them from My Kitchen Rules SA, which they recently competed in and reached the semi-finals! “The MKR SA experience was a remarkable one – but mostly we loved sharing Karoo recipes and methods with the rest of SA. We always felt like mere representatives of a food culture so much greater than ourselves.”

A pair of Cape mountain zebras stand before the looming Nuweveld Mountains in Karoo National Park. The top of these peaks would be level with the surrounding plains were it not for a cap of erosion resistant dolerite that for millions of years has protected the softer sedimentary rocks below. The Karoo contains a rich record of petrified fossils. This is the head of a Diictodon, a half-metre-long burrowing, mammallike reptile, which lived in the region during the Permian period 260–250 million years ago.

“People come to stay with us and we teach them some of the generational recipes and techniques we’ve learned from the grandmothers and great-grandmothers (and -fathers) in our family. It’s a Karoo breakaway through which we aim to teach people a heritage that they can take away and even teach other people.”

The Karoo National Park is one of the Great Karoo’s classic fossil-collection and study sites. Its 400m-long Fossil Trail – a short walk from reception – provides a glimpse into the origins of life on Earth, with displays of skulls, bones and skeletons of extinct wildlife that roamed these plains during the Permian period from roughly 255 million years ago.

Karoo National Park also conserves more than 200 bird species, including over 20 breeding pairs of Verreaux’s Eagle. Not long ago journalists wrote of the Karoo’s abiding silences, but now that the hunters’ guns have fallen silent, nature’s sounds have resumed. These days visitors can stop almost anywhere on the plains and hear the deep, froggy croaks of Karoo Korhaans now that they no longer fear ending up in the cooking pot. There are also 18 snake and five tortoise species, plus a wide variety of endemic animals, particularly small reptiles, as well as 121 endemic plant species.

Lani & Louzel now host farm foodie experiences for the public on their family farm Waterval, outside Cradock. The Farm to Table experience includes cooking classes with demos and hands-on training, and food and wine pairing, all-inclusive with two nights’ accommodation on the farm.

HEARTS & HEROES C OM PI L E D B Y ANG I E S NYMAN

Rainbow Warriors Bonni Suckling and Nadia Lewis have endured what no parent should have to, suffering the agonising death of their young sons, Jed and Hanno, to cancer. To honour their lives, they pour their love and energy into Rainbows and Smiles, a public benefit organisation that provides emotional, social and financial support to families and caregivers when a child is diagnosed with cancer and educates people about the importance of early detection. These brave mums insist on not sugarcoating what happened. Here are their stories…

F

ounder of Rainbows and Smiles, Bonni Suckling and Ray Thomas’s six-year-old son Jed died on 11 July 2011 after bravely fighting an Anaplastic Astrocytoma for three years.

BONNI: Jed was a healthy happy little boy until August 2008 when he started to show signs of headaches, nausea and balance issues. After many doctor/paediatrician visits, he was diagnosed with a highly aggressive brain tumour. The day the carnage of cancer started is eternally etched into my memory. Jed endured three craniotomies, 31 sessions of conventional radiation, experimental chemotherapy and palliative stereotactic radiation, protocol that was highly aggressive and gave Jed three additional years but was an emotionally draining time. I will never forget the “torture” of cancer treatment. NADIA: The day Hanno was born – 22 July 2010 – was such a joyous day for my husband, Tiaan and me. As the first little boy amongst all the nieces, he instantly became the apple of everyone’s eye… Hanno was fearless, happy, inquisitive, very headstrong and his favourite colour was pink! He loved bugs and animals alike. He adored picking flowers and showering me with blooms daily. Our boy was a healthy little man with no prior medical issues whatsoever, not even a drop of antibiotics had touched his lips! But this changed very drastically…. On Friday, 8 June 2012 – three days after I’d had a miscarriage – Hanno had a pesky cold and persistent cough. I was lucky to get an appointment with his paediatrician on the day, who found that no air was entering Hanno’s right lung. It turned out to be impacted… squashed!! I’ll never forget the specialist surgeon explaining

the results of his CT scan: “I’m almost a 100% certain this is a Teratoma, a benign tumour. It’s not serious, however you’d have to make a decision sooner than later to have it surgically removed.’’ As it turned out, the tumour wasn’t benign and Hanno was diagnosed on 12 June 2013 with a rare form of childhood cancer called Aveolar Rhabdomayosarcoma, stage 4… Hanno immediately started with a high-dose chemo protocol including radiation. After three surgeries, his cancer metastasised to his brain… Hanno had to have a craniotomy, which is brain surgery. After this blow, Tiaan and I realised we couldn’t continue putting our beautiful brave son through any more. After 13 months of fighting this monster, our precious Hanno “Brave Heart’’ Lewis passed away on 19 July 2014 at 16h10, three days before his 4th birthday… His little baby brother was only 5 weeks old at the time.

What crossed your mind when you first received his diagnosis? BONNI: The first time Jed was diagnosed I had no idea of its magnitude. I was so naïve – I remember asking the doctor if a brain tumour was like a big boil – I had no idea that a brain tumour was cancer. I thought it would be removed and Jed would need some rehabilitation. Sadly, when he relapsed a second and again, a third time, I knew that there was a chance my son could die. I tried to reassure myself it couldn’t be happening. I had to stay positive, but the emotional pain was excruciating. I was barely able to function and started to remove myself from everyone – I was trapped in a shattered world. NADIA: It was a beautiful day in Durban, the sun caught Hanno’s golden hair and gorgeous smile as he looked at me. It was at that moment when heaviness entered my heart, and I knew that something was going to interrupt our happiness in a very sad way… On receiving the cancer diagnosis, I felt like I’d been punched in the stomach. Tiaan passed out from the shock. The chance of long-term survival was 20-40%. However, we thought WE WILL fight! And we WILL overcome this.

When Jed/Hanno died, how did and how do you carry on? www.onroutemag.co.za

BONNI: Grief is the price we pay for love. The pain felt daily is indescribable; we suffer depression, anger, guilt, despair and an intense loneliness. My hopes, dreams and plans have been turned upside down. I’ve been numb for a long time but when my emotions catch up I’m left crippled, weak and broken. Jed and Bonni

On days when I miss Jed my ability to make decisions or think clearly is impaired. With time, I’ve learnt to slow down and talk about my grief. Nadia and I often have days when facing reality is just too difficult and then we have each other to pick up the slack. NADIA: When Hanno died I survived by taking one breath at a time, and when breathing became manageable I took it day by day. I also had a 5-week-old baby to care for, Hanno’s little brother, and his daddy was just as broken as me.

How did it affect your family?

Bonn

BONNI: Jed had a best friend named Thami. The boys believed they were brothers and told me they knew exactly why one was white and the other was brown – because Jed ate white chocolate and Thami ate brown chocolate. Otherwise, they believed they were identical, and they were inseparable. Jed’s death left Thami’s heart sore and broken and I know that Thami feels he couldn’t protect his brother from cancer and suffered anxiety and guilt. He had no idea how sick his brother was, and Jed’s death was a massive shock for Thami. Thami will always hold a special place in my heart as “my other son”.

iser

Ray and I separated four months after Jed died. I’m not sure how much it had to do with Jed’s death and the high levels of stress we both endured. Ray is the best dad in the world and I love and respect him so much. NADIA: Hugo was only 5 weeks old when his brother passed away, but today he knows of Hanno and asks many curious questions about him. I love telling Hugo about his big brother.

What special memories do you have of Jed/Hanno?

When I’m depressed, sometimes suicidal even, I remind myself of those words and strive to make every day the funnest day ever. NADIA: Hanno, thanks to his dad, also had an eye for beautiful ladies, who he called “hot mommas”. Try this for size when you go shopping and he spots a beautiful woman – trolley dash has nothing on me! Hanno used to always tell me I look beautiful and expressed it by saying, “Mama lyk soos ’n hot momma!”

BONNI: The day before Jed died we woke up and looked at each other. I asked what he felt like doing for the day. It was July and cold… He was completely paralysed, going blind and very weak. He looked at me with his big blue eyes and said, “Mommy let’s make today the funnest day ever!”

HEARTS & HEROES

My biggest consolation in grief and greatest achievement in life is to have fulfilled my son’s wishes of making the world of oncology a better place. – Bonni Suckling, mum of Jed Brady Sucklling, forever 6

How do you support one another?

Hanno afte craniotom r the y

BONNI: It’s more than support. We’ve morphed into one human… Pinky and the Brain – the role of Brain is interchangeable. We complete each other’s sentences and no longer need words to know what the other is thinking. It’s extremely handy in day-to-day life, as I can log into Nadia’s brain to retrieve my personal data at any given time. Nadia’s my best friend, my soul sister. She’s my oxygen on a Tsunami Grief Day! NADIA: I only met my amazing friend Bonni towards the end of Hanno’s life. She supported us, cried with us and welcomed me to my new normal… I never have to pretend with her. I love her crazy cool, her passion, love, and beautiful heart; I’m so grateful to be part of her dream, Rainbows and Smiles!

Hanno and Nadia

Tell us about Rainbows and Smiles… BONNI: Rainbows and Smiles began because of Jed’s love language of giving gifts to others. We delivered toys, crafts and activity sets to oncology wards with Jed being our smiley courier. After Jed’s death we moved away slightly from only the “fun” part and now try to offer financial support in the form of food vouchers, medical bills, funeral support, etc. Nadia and I’ve always dreamed of having a house where we can host oncology rehabilitation with specialists in the field of long-term survival. While that will always remain our dream – we continue to offer emotional, financial and social support. We always say that our bank account is not a savings account and therefore our dream rehab house is put on hold. We focus on the immediate and often pressing needs of oncology families.

FAMILY MATTERS

HEALTH & SAFETY A GOOD NIGHT’S SLEEP IS IMPERATIVE BEFORE A LONG-DISTANCE DRIVE We know you’ve heard it before but it’s true – when you consider how much of your life is spent asleep, you really should buy the best bed you can afford. And it would seem there’s currently a gap between expensive sleep solutions and cheap mattresses, the latter having a short lifespan and counterproductive to health.

LIGHT FIRES AND BRAAIS WITHOUT BURNING YOUR FINGERS WITH LION LONG SAFETY MATCHES Lion safety matches have been part of family life in SA for well over 100 years! Made from sustainably grown pine, and manufactured to strict standards to guarantee a slow-burning, steady flame, the Lion Long Match, in particular, will prevent you from burning your hands when lighting the braai or gas burner. Lion Jumbo Matches standard, R4.99 a box; Lion Long Safety Matches, R9.99 a box from leading retailers.

At Vencasa – including at their smart new store in Kramerville – you’ll find top mattresses that are realistically priced, starting from R12 499. It’s also home to top-of-the-line Magniflex and Tempur imports, whose dreamy scientific design you can experience first-hand in the Sleep Experience Centre. You’ll also find Sealy mattresses, bases and frames, linen and an extensive pillow range, and luxurious bedroom accessories, at a price to suit your pocket. They invite you to take your time – “Bring a book and relax...” Those who take sleep seriously might also stop by the Vencasa Pillow Bar in Sandton City, with consultants to help establish which pillow suits your unique way of sleeping. A recent arrival, the Malouf scented pillow, even keeps pesky mozzies at bay (great with spring upon us!) and other scents will help soothe you to sleep. SET YOUR SIGHTS ON BETTER SLEEP

O

ur continuous exposure to the artificial light from LED lights and tech device screens is believed to spoil our ability to fall asleep and sleep well. These emit high levels of blue light which suppresses melatonin production – the hormone needed for sleep. The innovative SleepSpec glasses for adults and kids are worn for two hours before bedtime and help you fall asleep quicker and promote deeper sleep.

The scientifically engineered orange lenses eliminate blue light from the environment allowing the body to produce melatonin. The research and science behind SleepSpec is backed by Dr. Robert Daniel, a specialist ophthalmologist with training in human physiology and neuroscience. Since SleepSpecs improve sleep, they also improve general health, sports and physical performance, and can even help manage jet lag.
