Post Office Logistics – from a letter to bulk frozen freight Whether you want to send a gift parcel overnight, ensure safe delivery of precious bulk cargo, or start an online shop, the Post Office Logistics group designs a perfect solution. “To courier an item overnight – to even a tiny town or village – you need us. Moving bulk items in secure containers? You need us,” says Nhlanhla Dube of SA Post Office Logistics. Dube explains the unique advantage of Post Office Logistics – designing special solutions. “One of our more unusual operations is delivering tiny citrus moths from the Lowveld, where they hatch, to citrus farmers in the Western Cape. The moths fertilise flowering citrus trees and without them there would be no fruit production. We transport the moths in special containers that protect them 100%.” SA Post Office Logistics acquired 26 new Mercedes-Benz and Fuso trucks at the end of 2012, making a huge improvement to the coverage and reliability of its fleet.
On a less fragile note … SA Logistics delivered the 2013 budget supplements for newspapers countrywide (and under strict security) from Cape Town. For the 2011 National Census, SA Logistics delivered 41 million items countrywide, and returned the completed material to Stats SA – all within deadline. Individual retail customers also deserve flexibility. Speed Services Couriers, available at all Post Office counters, offers the most affordable counter-to-counter courier service in South Africa. A courier item can be handed in at more than 2,000 Post Office counters for delivery the next day. And for account holders, Speed Services Couriers will collect items from the customer’s door for next-day delivery. Both sender and receiver can track items via the web, call centre or sms. Speed Services Couriers recently introduced a cash-ondelivery facility for business owners. XPS couriers – a subsidiary of SA Post Office Logistics – focuses on business-to-business delivery, reaching 3,200 destinations daily and offering peace of mind through electronically captured delivery confirmation documents. Clients receive proof of delivery via hard copy, CD or website. PX – another subsidiary – targets the niche freight market of retailers and related business sectors. PX moves consolidated loads of up to three tons in tailor-made containers right to the client’s doorstep, offering a threeday loose consignment service. Post Office Logistics offers a particularly cost-effective service through alliances with postal operators in neighbouring Swaziland, Botswana and Namibia.

THE ART OF CARAVANNING
A LIFESTYLE CHOICE G
atvol of holiday booking traumas and what feels like an endless experience of overrated accommodation? Many locals are seeking independence when choosing a holiday they deserve, which is why caravanning is on the up. Considered your ticket to the best of both worlds, caravanning allows you to enjoy the privacy and comfort of your own accommodation plus the freedom of the open road. The fact is: caravans give not just one holiday, but an endless variety of cross-country getaways that can (and probably will) draw you quickly into a whole new lifestyle.

The ability to hitch up your ‘home’ and go wherever adventure takes you is priceless. It’s also one of the most affordable ways to take the whole family on an extended trip and it’s certainly the best way to see the country. There are more than 700 caravan and camping resorts in South Africa, some offering very basic facilities; others providing five-star luxury. Whatever your preference, you will find yourself planning your next trip before the last one has even come to its end.

Bakwena is fully committed to Corporate Social Investment Bakwena Platinum Corridor Concessionaire's (Bakwena) position as the holder of a 30 year concession contract allows the company to be able to add critical value, going beyond the work that they do. A central part of the value that they add has been their consistent and sincere commitment to uplifting and improving the lives of community members throughout the North West and southern Limpopo provinces. Bakwena has developed sustainable programmes that are designed to have a meaningful and long term impact on the safety and well-being of these communities, who they strive to involve in the implementation of their Corporate Social Investment (CSI) initiatives as often as possible. Community programmes are based on partnerships and a trust that has been formed between Bakwena, the community members and other stakeholders, such as government departments, private sector entities, and Non-Government Organisations. Importantly, all funds are channelled directly to beneficiaries, and do not flow through authorities or third parties. During 2013, Bakwena spent approximately R6.6 million on these initiatives. Bakwena's main focus in terms of CSI activities relates to prioritising projects that will uplift and benefit the communities associated with the routes the company manages, by providing road safety- interventions, environmental education- and health programmes with the ultimate aim to make a lasting difference in the lives of many. Bakwena allocates funds from its operating expenses for its CSI projects and also works to actively raise the needed funds for some of their initiatives by means of their annual charity golf day event, which is now entering into its sixth year.
The Vision for the Future project helped more than 11,500 community learners who had their eyes tested in 2013.

NORTH KOREA It’s no secret that North Korea has one of the most malignant governments on earth. Kim Jong-un feasts like a tick while his cowed people starve. If you can even get a visa, just know that you will be chaperoned at all times by official ‘guides’ aka Kim Jongun employees, who will doggedly showcase the various lavish monuments honouring the Kim dynasty. But, as a bonus, for your due diligence, you might just score an autograph from NBA has-been Dennis Rodman – (him and Kim are new best buds). For a preposterous fee, even tourists from capitalist South Korea are allowed to visit certain scenic
“Kim Jong-un feasts like a tick while his cowed people starve.” mountains in North Korea. Though why they would want to, is an absolute puzzle. Perhaps it’s to see if they can spot any beleaguered relatives, but even if they did, they would not be allowed to mingle, let alone talk to any North Koreans. Oh, and don’t forget to pack your long johns because Korean winters are brutal and grim, and bearing in mind that buildings in North Korea are designed to look austerely impressive rather than to serve any utilitarian purpose, the heaters in your hotel probably won’t work. Just saying. Shop shelves are as dusty as they are spartan. But, there are karaoke machines! Although you will soon realise all they play are songs about Mr Kim. Funny that.

HELL ON EARTH

There are loons out there who will happily cough up for disaster tourism. It could be argued that the people who visit Pripyat, the infamous abandoned city a scant 4km from radioactive Chernobyl, are such cases. Pripyat was once home to 50 000 Soviet residents, who were evacuated following the nuclear catastrophe in 1986, when an explosion claimed about 8 000 lives. It’s still considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history. Since then, the consequential fallout from the spewing radiation has
When that brainless travel agent tries to sell you a deceptively idyllic-looking package holiday to this Indian Ocean Island, you can tell her “I would rather be pecked to death by ducks,” because Christmas Island is guaranteed to give you the willies — unless of course you’re into natural migrations, in which case this could possible be a dream trip. But for those who are non-crustacean lovers, this is a red nightmare. Once a year, Christmas Island boasts 120 million crabs
and only 1 400 people. And once a year, for 60 interminable days, these crabs begin their sideways hell-bent march from out of the island’s interior rainforest to the ocean, to breed and lay eggs (to make even more red crabs)! The migration has become something of a phenomenon, with locals barricading roads, shutting shops and generally clearing out to make way for the territorial red crabs that are named both for their colour and their frisky response to being poked. And if a river of single-minded salacious red crabs doesn’t unnerve you, then you should probably keep a lookout for the island’s other occupant: the coconut or robber crab. These four kilogramheavy coconut-cracking beasts are the largest land-living arthropods in the world. Oh, and did we mention that they’re known to keep hold of itd victim with its giant pincers for extended periods of time?
“...considered the worst nuclear power plant accident in history.” been estimated at just short of a massive million potential casualties. Today it’s still not possible to live there and yet, in 2002, when it opened for tourism, people came. If Pripyat, with its freeze-frame of 1980s Soviet life (propaganda slogans still emblazon on walls and other items eerily frozen-in-time) isn’t close enough to the radioactive action for you, you can always pop in to the actual Wikipedia benignly describes midges as a sort Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant itself (but not Reactor 4, where you’re in risk of sprouting of a ‘biting gnat’. That’s like saying Jeffrey another head and maybe some catfish Dahmer wasn’t such a bad guy, he just got whiskers). The power plant has a cafeteria a bit cranky when he was hungry. Hikers that serves “freshly-prepared and appetising familiar with Scottish terrain more accurately Ukrainian food”, but remember to bring your describe midges as sadistic Highland tenants own bottled water, because tap water in the that cloud upon victims (oblivious tourists, area remains unsafe for drinking or touching CO2-emitting plants, children, small dogs…) because of the radiation that leaked into with such avarice, as to leave a person surrounding dams. Makes you wonder what trembling in the foetal position. A single liquids they’ve used to prepare the appetising midge is almost invisible to the human eye, Ukranian food. And do try to avoid any rickety measuring just one millimetre in length, looking buildings – in 2012 a floor collapsed and yet its impact is devastating. They leave injuring several tourists. Now just sign here, itchy, swollen welts which then turn into angry, painful scabs and, occasionally, further and here, and here; slip into this sexy, squeaky plastic suit, try not to breathe and complications. “First they aimed for my ears and then my eyelids, so I covered up as much we’ll begin the tour…
THE ISLE OF RUM, SCOTLAND
“A swarm can inflict about 3 000 bites in an hour.” as I could. But they persisted and once they bombarded my mouth and nose it was just too much,” bemoans one victim, a camper from Edinburgh who abandoned tent and drove home to escape them. Millions of these tiny biting bastards emerge from their hiding places on deceptively calm summer evenings and terrorise locals and visitors alike, forcing them to don any number of ridiculous-looking hooded garments and layers of foul-smelling greasy midge repellents. A swarm can inflict about 3 000 bites in an hour, while 40 000 midges can land on an unprotected arm over the same period. There are even websites that provide ‘midge forecasts’. And if a garden variety midge wasn’t bad enough, there the Rum Midge, found on the Isle of Rum, a place you should never, ever go to, unless you want to leave with an epidermis resembling a peeled grape.

Why should people read your blog?
18
My blog should read like an online coffee table book for armchair and actual travellers. I bring my stories to life with photographs and words. I try to capture the essence of the areas that I visit and the people that make them special, offering useful information too. Its a more intimate look than your average guide book, evoking feelings and emotion, interest and hopefully a desire to visit these places whilst dreaming with me about those to come. If I can achieve that, I will be forever proud.
Tell us more about your passion for conservation? I’m an advocate for conscious living, an animal lover that’s more than just a little green-tinged. My passion for the earth
and her ocean is ever on the increase as I see both their beauty and vulnerability. Having spent much time on safari in various game reserves and being exposed to the challenges that we face with poaching and
“The sheer joy associated with new experiences and changed scenery is imprinted in me - as long as I remember I have chased travel and new experiences.” game management, I chose to become more educated and involved. I have a conservation theme to my blog and hope to build awareness. If I can encourage more respect
for the earth and its animals, it would be a wonderful thing.
If a picture speaks a thousand words, which of your images tell the best story? Somehow it comes back to people and cultures for me - children specifically. I meet and photograph children wherever I go. It’s interesting how many similarities there are in children around the world. That and stray dogs and cats, which I can’t get enough of either. Yet it’s in documenting events and action, ceremonies and activities that I feel my photos speak loudest.
How has the platform for travel bloggers evolved over the past years? When I started blogging four years ago there were mostly lifestyle bloggers with food and wine closely following. I was one of the only travel specific blogs. Today I am a proud member of a South African travel

OPEL ASTRA PUNCHING ABOVE ITS WEIGHT Astra has had a makeover. OnRoute put this sedan through its paces on a short test drive…
T
he Opel Astra is a pretty car in a saturated market – Kia, Hyundai, Ford, Toyota and VW all have a model in this segment, and they’re all pretty much the same. However, there are little things that make the Astra stand out.
www.onroutemag.co.za
Opel has invested money and time into creating a budget version of a business sedan. It seems to have everything an expensive business vehicle should, but for a fraction of the price.

The extras available to the driver and passengers are many. The cabin is spacious, with a design that has passenger-comfort in mind. There is ample space for a six-foot-plus driver and four equally sized passengers without feeling too cramped. The sound system is superb, and the seats, both front and rear, are very comfortable. The controls and the car’s internal system are configured in a way
that gives the cabin great flow and makes operating the internal systems easy while driving. And, there’s plenty of boot space, which means it offers a practical element too. We tested the 1.6 Turbo Cosmo Sedan and the engine packs a punch well above its weight.
For a sedan of that size, the nippy little engine means the car handles like a sports hatch, delivering great off-the-line speed, and 132kW engine can get you from standstill to 100km/h in a shade under nine seconds. With performance like that and a top speed of just over 220km/h, you would expect the
The fuel price is constantly on the up, so many are compromising performance for economy. Luckily for them, the new Astra Sedan offers a bit of both. The Astra Sedan is priced very competitively starting at around R240 000 all the way to the top end at around R285 000. This is not particularly cheap in the grand scale of things, but when weighed up against its competitors, the Astra Sedan is going to raise a few eyebrows in the motoring industry and probably a few heart rates on the roads.

Astra to devour petrol like a kid devours sweets at a party, but the Astra has a claimed consumption of around seven litres per 100km. Even if Opel’s estimates are a little off with those numbers, it is safe to assume that anything in that ball park is exceptional.

Wrestle-Mania is one of the most watched shows on public television in South Africa. Spoilsports will argue that WWE is nothing but a bunch of actors flinging themselves around a ring, but that’s not why we watch. It is entertainment; it puts on a show – there are plots, episodes, rivalries and character development that would make a soapy writer proud. In the latest installment of this very successful gaming franchise, you once again immerse yourself in the exciting world of wrestling. You can either choose one of the already famous personalities and take them on a journey to world wrestling domination, or you can create your own superstars and travel with them through the world of intrigue, in and outside of the ring. The gameplay itself is not a perfect sim of real-world fighting. There are some logic-defying moves to try and plenty of signature stunts to learn, but we didn’t find the fighting element to be the best part of the game, it was the journey that hooked us. WWE is celebrating 30 years of Wrestle-Mania, their biggest showpiece, and the game is a celebration of the sport. From a gameplay perspective, it is just above average, but from an entertainment perspective, this game is fun. GAME GURU RATES IT
81% BATTLEFIELD 4 – CHINA RISING We love a good first-person shooter. It is a genré that has taken us from fighting the Germans in World War II, to the Russians in the Cold War. We have fought for the US in Iraq and now in the latest version of EA’s Battlefield, we fight in China. There are a multitude of new maps available, totally new worlds to explore and a whole new enemy to take on! The game itself has everything you could want, from expansive environments, to cool guns and weapons. The story itself is not totally original as the same underlying plot seems to follow this genre from game to game, but that is hardly noticeable. The gameplay is flawless and you lose yourself in the story. It does not take long to complete the solo campaign, but what EA has very cleverly done is take the multiplayer and online multiplayer to a whole new level. The sheer scale of the maps will have you playing this game longer than any other before it! The graphics are beyond reproach and the story is gripping, but it is the online multiplayer that takes Battlefield to the next level for both novice and experienced gamers.

It’s the Liquid of Life It’s almost holiday season again, and it’s also a time when we know many people will be taking a short break. However, it’s also a time when blood collections become difficult to maintain with road deaths and injuries on the increase. The South African National Blood Service aims to collect 3000 units of blood each day around the country to ensure that there is always adequate safe blood available. Although many may believe that it’s incidences on the road that increases the demand for blood, the actuality is that there is a daily demand for this precious life saving liquid.
Take the story of little Vearin below; In April 2013, two-year-old Vearin Naidoo was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukaemia. This lifethreatening blood disorder was first diagnosed after blood tests done for what seemed to be symptoms of fever had infact turned out to be cancer. Vearin has been receiving chemotherapy treatment at Wits Donald Gordon Medical Clinic since April. Chemotherapy treatment kills the cancer cells but also destroys healthy cells in the body and this not only puts the patient’s immune system at risk, but also reduces the body’s blood count. As blood count decreases, patients become reliant on blood and platelet transfusions for survival. So far, Vearin has received 10 blood transfusions and 13 platelet transfusions. The transfusions increase his blood count which allow him to recover faster. The family have expressed their gratitude to all the donors who have donated blood and platelets, so selflessly to help Vearin and other patients like him who are so dependent on blood and platelet transfusions. Thanks to the commitment of regular blood donors, other patients like Vearin have a chance to celebrate another birthday and another festive season with family and friends. Don’t let holidays get in the way of life and support the South African National Blood Service by becoming a blood or platelet donor. For more information contact the SANBS toll free on 0800 11 9031 or visit www.sanbs.org.za. In order to book a platelet donation, you need to make an appointment with your local platelet donation centre. South African National Blood Service @theSANBS

HEARTS AND HEROES By: Elka Schaimberg
www.onroutemag.co.za
Amado is a special place where miracles happen every day. Located in the heart of Paarl, the farm offers animal-assisted therapy to special needs children who can’t afford it.
54
THE HEALING POWER OF HORSES M’Lani Basson - Founder and owner of Amado
M
To date Amado has a 200-child waiting list, but in this safe and nurturing environment,
it’s the horses that are the real heroes! They come from a variety of backgrounds, each one with a story of their own. One horse was saved from an area of drought and near death; another was old and left abandoned; another was born and raised on the farm. M’Lani has personally trained all of them and according to her, each horse offers something completely unique to the thousands of children they have helped in their time. “Grace is soft-natured; she bows her head so that it is easier to tickle her ears. Rain is fearless and strong-willed and takes our children where they never imagined possible, and Fire is delicate and understanding – a fantastic listener – and the children feel safe on his warm back.”
Images courtesy of Amado
While helping to heal the children’s bodies, Amado also encourages personal development and creativity, giving them a greater sense of independence so that they no longer need full-time care. Amado gives these brave children a sense of self-worth by allowing them to be free from their shackles even if it is not something they always get in their communities.
“In 2008 we had seven children in wheelchairs. Today, not a single one uses their wheelchair fulltime anymore. We had little boys and girls who had stopped communicating due to abuse. Now they are not only talking again, but have smiles on their faces.”
“We see them transform from being shyly hunched in their wheelchairs to heads held high, proud and laughing with enthusiasm ready to take the reigns in their hands.” At this humble little smallholding in Paarl, miracles are achieved every day.
HOW YOU CAN HELP
It costs R275 000 a year to run the programme. The horses alone cost R80 000. It costs R5 000 to teach a child for a year. R500 to feed a horse for a week. R50 a day for fuel to fetch the children from school and R15 a day for soap and toilet paper for the young riders. Amado relies entirely on donations and every little bit helps. www.amado.co.za
www.onroutemag.co.za
Today, 40 vulnerable and disabled children are carefully selected from a special needs school in the area (Amado’s most important partner) to take part in a 12-month therapy programme. “We take on the worst-of-theworst cases – I’d say 75% of my children have been thrown away by one or both biological parents,” says M’lani. Instead of traditional methods of therapy and physical exercise, Amado allows the children to freely interact with the horses. “When you cannot help yourself in and out of the bath, but you can control a 400kg horse, you gain confidence. In the process, the children also learn to treat animals with respect. I see their little faces light up when they see the horses, and I know that at least for now, they feel like kings and princesses, on top of the world, their hurt a galaxy away.”
Images by Alex Callister
’Lani Basson (33) grew up with horses on her parents’ smallholding and began riding when she was just three years old. A qualified trauma counsellor, she stumbled upon equineassisted therapy while working overseas in Edinburgh. In 2008 after much research and a lot of hard work, M’Lani’s Amado dream became a reality.

BUMPY ROAD AHEAD [S PORT & AD VE NT URE ]
7PARAGLIDING THINGS YOU DIDN’T KNOW ABOUT
The only thing you really need to know is that paragliding is the best way to experience complete airborne euphoria. But, if you want to know more, read on…
1. It’s one of the safest airborne sports If you thought it was a sport reserved for suicidal maniacs and adrenaline junkies, think again – paragliding is really not as dangerous as it sounds. At least 30 lines connect you to the wing, any one of which is strong enough to support your weight. The risk of the wing deforming or collapsing while in flight is rare and usually due to flying in bad weather. If you’re at a sufficient altitude, the reserve ‘chute worn by your glider pilot will guide you safely back to the ground.
2. It’s more comfy than the chair you’re sitting on Unlike most harness-based activities, the focus is not on a series of uncomfortable straps and crazy clipping devices around your legs, thighs, groin and midsection. Paragliding harnesses connect you to something akin to a lounge chair at the front of the glider (some of which even feature lumbar support). After leaping from the precipice of your choice, the glider inflates and you simply relax and ride your flying lounger wherever the wind takes you, while your experienced pilot does all the work.
www.onroutemag.co.za
3. Pilots take control
56
Pilots have a great deal of control over their gliders. They hold controls in each hand which connect to the trailing edge of the left and right sides of the wing. These are used to steer and adjust speed. The only thing not in the pilot’s control is ascent – that depends on your pilot’s skill (and luck) at finding rising columns of thermal air, which can launch the glider to great distances.
4. It’s not hang-gliding The major difference between hang-gliding and paragliding is in the wing shape and design. Hang-gliders are solid wing structures

SKY’S THE LIMIT! A WORD FROM PARAGLIDING PILOT STEPHEN KRUGER
5. It was named by nasa
NASA helped develop, design and name the paraglider. It was previously known as a sail wing, used in the recovery of lunar capsules. In 1961, a French engineer named Pierre Lemoigne took the first step by cutting strategically placed vents in a parachute which allowed it to ascend into the air and be steered.
Owner of Fly CT, Stephen represented the South African team at the Red Bull Dolimiten Mann in Austria. He ranked eighth in the South African league in 2012 and finished sixth at the South African National Paragliding Champs in Barberton. Stephan is also an instructor who teaches advanced flying techniques and aerobatic manoeuvres on the tandem paraglider. His personal best distance is 118 km.
6. Take a long-distance flight Most tandem paraglider flights last between 15 to 25 minutes, depending on weather conditions. But especially skilled pilots can find and exploit thermal columns of rising air and use them to fly their way across the country. The world record for the longest paraglider flight in a straight distance is held by Nevil Hulett of South Africa who flew a distance of for 502.9 kilometres in 2008.

(an aluminium frame in a V-shaped wing). Paragliders are soft wing structures, with no internal frame, which once inflated have an elliptical shape. Paragliders have a much slower flying speed which means they’re more forgiving than hang-gliders, and as a result the learning curve is usually less steep for paragliding.
What motivated you to make a career and a business out of paragliding? The absolute desire and freedom to fly and to share the joy of paragliding flight with others.
Why would you recommend this sport to others? Tandem flight
Paragliding is the closest man will ever come to flying like a bird, and this has always been the dream of mankind.
How has the sport changed your attitude towards life? People always say that you should find something that you love and you will not work another day in your life; this is what paragliding has given me.
What can a first-timer expect from their first experience? You can expect the sheer exhilaration of getting airborne within a few easy steps and truly flying around just like a bird and only relying on the elements.
What are your personal favourite flying sites and where else in the world have you flown? My favourite South African site would definitely be Lone Tree Hill in Barberton. I have flown in the Alps in Austria, Italy and Switzerland.
Where does Fly CT operate from? We are based in the CBD in Cape Town and mainly operate from Lions Head and Signal Hill. We do also fly from Sir Lowrys Pass, Franschhoek, Hermanus and Porterville.
Although all safety precautions are in place, things can and have gone wrong. Why?
7. Even you can do it! Anyone who weighs between 20 and 115 kilograms can paraglide with absolutely no experience required. Booking your flight in advance is essential. The operator can then advise what the weather and wind conditions for that date are and make a decision whether to proceed with the booking. Some tour operators will arrange transport for
you, while others will provide you with directions to the launch site. Paragliding gear conveniently weighs less than a golf bag when it’s all packed up, so you can take it with you mountain-hiking then paraglide down when you’ve had enough. Participants are advised to wear jeans and closed shoes, as well as a jacket, regardless of what time of year it is. The scenery, serenity and adrenalin will most likely leave you wanting more.
The main reason for tragic outcomes is the inability of pilots to assess the appropriate weather conditions to fly in. Paragliding can be a very safe sport if you choose to fly in safe weather conditions.
What makes paragliding addictive? The fact that when you are flying up there in the sky nothing else matters and for a moment in time you are truly free.
How much does it cost to fly? The cost of a tandem paragliding flight is R950 per person per flight.

PITSTOP [H E AL T H ]
BECOME AN ORGAN DONOR
A
n individual who is ready to be a donor is one who has followed stringent procedures practiced in South Africa, in line with international best practice for organ transplantation. Vermeulen says there are a number of possible reasons for South Africa’s register of organ donors being so small, but added that improving health facilities is a pivotal way to make progress, while ensuring successful transplantations.
The extent to which a society understands the issue of organ transplantation also rests on cultural and religious beliefs. In countries where religious practices influence legislation, medical concepts such as organ donations are subject to fine filters. Organisations like Organ Donation in the United Kingdom have partnered with several religious groups to bridge the communication gap.
THE FACTS
(ACCORDING TO THE ORGAN DONOR FOUNDATION) • There are currently approximately 4300 South Africans waiting for an organ transplantation. • 0.1% of South Africans are registered organ donors. • This figure is considerably low when weighed up against western regions such as the United Kingdom, where 31% of its people are registered organ donors. • The latest statistics show that South Africa had 573 organ and cornea transplants carried out in 2012, a number that dropped by 20.8% since 2009. • 2012 records also show that 213 were kidney transplants. www.odf.org.za
PREGNANT AND DRIVING? The National Highway Safety Administration designed a “pregnant” crash-test dummy used in simulated car crashes to record how an accident could affect a pregnant woman and her unborn baby. This is what the research findings showed: • Wearing a seatbelt reduces the injury risk to your unborn baby by up to 70%. • Unbelted pregnant women are three times more likely to lose their baby in a crash, and two times as likely to have excessive maternal bleeding. • Even in a minor accident, where injuries are not as severe, you still have a 5% chance of losing your baby if unrestrained.
www.onroutemag.co.za
• Proper seatbelt use by pregnant women would save 200 foetuses each year.
60
• 68% of women involved in a crash and not wearing a seat belt noted abdominal pain. Some mothers are also more likely to experience complications from blood clots, fractures, and internal injuries if involved in a crash while unrestrained. • A mother’s uterus and bladder are not as protected by the pelvis after 12 weeks gestation and can be more easily injured by blunt trauma.
Arrive Alive addresses some concerns of pregnant drivers so that mums-to-be can maintain the mobility they’re used to.
4 EASY STEPS TO WEARING YOUR SEATBELT CORRECTLY DURING PREGNANCY: 1. The lap-belt part of the restraint should be under your abdomen and across your upper thighs so it’s snug and comfortable. Never place it on or above your belly! 2. When travelling in cars fitted with air bags, driver or passenger seats should be pushed back as far as practical. 3. Adjust your sitting position so the belt crosses your shoulder without cutting into your neck. It should cross over your collar bone and should lie between your breasts. Never put the shoulder belt behind your back or under your arm. 4. The belt should be worn as tight as possible.
No matter what the stage of your pregnancy, it is vital that you always wear a seat belt. By wearing a seat belt you are protecting yourself and your unborn baby in the event
of a crash. Remember that it is illegal not to wear a seat belt. This applies to both front and back seats - pregnancy does not provide exemption from the law.
TOP 10 SAFETY TIPS FOR ROAD TRAVEL THIS EASTER Issued on behalf of The Midas Group
T
he World Health Organization (WHO) regards South Africa as one of the world’s worst countries for road safety! Road users should be taking extra precautions this Easter, keeping the basics when planning a road trip in mind. Midas recommends some easy-toremember tips.
1. Plan Ahead Plan your holiday route before leaving home, giving yourself enough time to reach your destination without speeding. Use a GPS device to guide you, making your trip stress-free by planning where to refuel, and your rest stops. Try to avoid driving after dark.
2. Service your Vehicle Avoid the inconvenience and expense of a mechanical breakdown, especially on a long trip, by having your vehicle checked and serviced by a reputable motor mechanic or car dealership. An option is to visit your nearest Auto Care & Diagnostics (ACD) Workshop, a national network of independently owned workshops specialising in vehicle service, maintenance and repairs. Locate the one closest to you: www.acdworkshop.co.za.
3. Child Safety Seats Research has shown that hospitalisation time for children from birth to four years who are involved in road accidents is reduced by up to 70% if they are seated in a booster child safety seat.
4. Always Buckle-up Safety belts are 99% effective in preventing occupants from being ejected from the vehicle in a crash.
5. No Cellphones Even though you may be using a hands-free device, try to avoid taking or making calls while driving. Being distracted from the road can prevent you from making quick, lifesaving choices to avoid a potential accident.
6. Keep your Distance Give yourself room to react to an obstruction in the road. Never follow too closely as you will need a two-second distance to avoid hazards on the road.
7. Back to Basics Obey speed limits and always signal. Allow yourself extra time to travel eliminating the need to speed, and always demonstrate your
intensions by signalling. Turn on your signals at least five to eight seconds before your turn, giving other motorists, pedestrians and cyclists adequate time to respond.
8. Scan your Environment Always be aware of upcoming intersections or decision points. Being able to spot a traffic sign early allows you to make the appropriate choices to prevent disasters.
9. Avoid Fatigue Turning up the radio, rolling down the car window, or having trouble keeping your eyes open and focused on the road may be signs that you are struggling with fatigue. Pull over and take a 15-20 minute nap. On a long trip, stop every two hours for a break. Ensure that you have at least eight hours’ sleep the night before a long trip to feel energised and alert when driving.
10. No Cruise Control on Wet Roads Wet roads become more dangerous and challenging to navigate, especially if smooth road surfaces or smooth tyres are thrown into the equation. The last thing a motorist needs is constant power when trying to navigate a slightly more challenging road.
