Editor’s comment

The New Year means

new beginnings T he beginning of the year is without a doubt the most exciting time of year. We have all come back from our leave feeling refreshed and filled with much confidence that the year will indeed be a good one for us all. However, this year I came back to some really sad news. The associations, AAXO and EXSA, announced in a joint press release in the middle of January that 3D Group had apparently dissolved and terminated all business activity as of 31 November 2017. The worst for me was that the owners and shareholders allegedly did so without informing staff, suppliers and their clients of this development. At this stage there is still a lot of hearsay. The reality is that 300 exhibition staff members arrived for work in early January to be told they are now without work. The full ramifications of the owners’ unethical actions are still to be seen. Besides, the shocking state they have left their staff in, how many suppliers and exhibitors will be impacted by this announcement? I am just so disappointed. We work with many industry players and I suppose we want to believe the best in people. When this kind of thing happens it makes me question the people I deal with on a daily basis. How do we as an industry ensure this doesn’t happen again? I think open communication is the key. The associations can play a critical role. This kind of event brings out the true character of an industry. This is when we do need to pull together and work to assist the staff, suppliers and exhibitors where we can. The owners and shareholders of 3D Group need to be accountable. We haven’t heard their side, but at this stage silence is definitely speaking louder than words. It is understandable, some businesses close, but staff always come first. They need to be informed in advance so they have time to find new work and

suppliers and exhibitors too need to be informed timeously so they can make a plan. What saddens me the most is there were rumours floating around in December but honestly, I think we were all so focused on our holidays that no one pursued it. Would it have made a difference? Probably not, but at least the investigation into the 3D Group would possibly be further along and staff would have been notified earlier. All I can say is this is a small sector. We need to stick together and where we can, we need to assist one another. The trade associations can perhaps, through collaboration, come up with some action plans whereby industry players can assist those affected. 2018 will be a good year, but only if we work together.

UWIN IWIN

TECH WITH HEART Uwin Iwin’s technology provides the heartbeat that gives your incentive programmes the edge.

T

echnology has changed the way we do business. Although we are now able to access data at the touch of a button, it has also made business a bit impersonal. Not so at Uwin Iwin Incentives. This company has embraced technology to provide a personal experience. “We have developed a cloud-based management system, Netuwin.com. Because it is cloud-based, businesses can easily manage their incentive programmes. It allows the client to track the progress of their participating employees. The participants can in turn transact on the platform through a user-friendly desktop and mobile phone interface,” explains Stuart Higgs, MD and CIO of Uwin Iwin Incentives. The management system interprets and processes all incoming data, and calculates and rewards pay-outs through the channels chosen by the client. It makes the management of the programme so much more convenient as there are many benefits:

Programme automation • Performance monitoring: The participants of the incentive programme enter their sales or performance figures on a system designed to process this information automatically. This means that the personnel requirement needed to run the programme is lessened significantly, which is cost-efficient and allows for instant feedback. • Real-time fulfilment: Whether your incentive uses rewards issued on branded gift cards, points to be redeemed on an online catalogue, or even cash benefits, performance requirements can be processed as soon as they are submitted. • Choice: Many researchers and specialists argue that, in the rewards arena, allowing for choice enhances the programme’s

motivation factor. The reasoning is that adopting a ‘one size fits all’ approach alienates some of the workforce as the rewards may be undesired. Giving a participant a choice as to their reward, on the other hand, means that rewards for good performance can be stipulated by the individual him/her self. We, for example, use a customisable catalogue (available online, of course) which can be exchanged for points or e-cash earnings. The point here is to empower your employees with variety.

Motivation The feedback provided by the programme is immediate. The participants can track their progress and receive instant rewards. That will motivate them to perform even better.

Client participation Programme participants can contact us directly through dedicated incentive programme websites, which are all designed to answer to the needs of every tailor designed incentive scheme.

Relationship building The interaction among the participants and the programme executives on the platform leads to healthy competition and the building of relationships.

Brand building Employees in a happy workplace are ambassadors for a brand. With this reward system in place, employee satisfaction will follow, and it will lead to a workforce spreading the good news about their company. That is marketing money can’t buy.

Speed of implementation Another immense advantage, we have found, of using cutting-edge technology is the speed of incentive planning and launches. Recently, for example, we

4 Business Events Africa January 2018

designed and launched a tailor-made programme for a major car manufacturer within just four days. “The programme also links with added services that we provide to enhance the client experience. These include travel, events, communication and consulting,” explains Stuart.

INCENTIVE TRAVEL IS THE ULTIMATE REWARD Travel rewards are desirable as it is a luxury experience, especially if created and managed by the Uwin Iwin Travel team. Motivational travel experiences create a legacy of care for winners, and build strong relationships between the company’s top achievers. Individuals and teams are inspired to reach future goals to ensure participation in the reward. Ultimately Uwin Iwin Incentive Travel creates timeless memories.

events that enhance the outcome of a company’s business objectives. The experienced event team manages events across South Africa. Uwin Iwin creates customised solutions backed by extensive event management experience, destination know-how and industry-specific knowledge.

COMMUNICATION IS THE KEY Effective and instant communications: employee engagement with a programme is essential to the success of the incentive, and highly developed communication technology allows us to get in touch with participants on a regular, and even daily, basis.

Comms platforms: the elements we have found to be most effective in communications work synergistically with well strategised SMSes, Facebook posts, Facebook www.businesseventsafrica.com

groups, and, most importantly, direct emailers (usually a combination of the above). Using these channels, the programme executives can remind participants of the plan, motivate them to work towards goals, and keep them informed about current progress. Good and sustained communication is a crucial part of our business, and keeps the incentive scheme at front-of-mind.

CONSULTATION ENSURES A TAILORMADE PROGRAMME Before the implementation of any incentive programme, Uwin Iwin will send a team of consultants to do an in-depth analysis of the company’s needs and come up with a bespoke package that addresses all of them and more. Not keeping up with the times could prove detrimental to any enterprise, and the incentive arena is no different. With Uwin Iwin’s self-developed and wholly owned cloud-based incentive platform

they ensure that your workforce will always have access to their progress and their rewards. If you are looking for an incentive management partner with a comprehensive vision of the future, Uwin Iwin Incentives should be your immediate choice. SITE and MPI

partner to make history in Rome Nearly 600 meeting and incentive professionals from around the world came together in Rome for the SITE + MPI Global Forum held 12-14 January at the Rome Cavalieri, Waldorf Astoria.

SITE & MPI boards.

T

he historic event marked the first time Society for Incentive Travel Excellence (SITE) and Meeting Professionals International (MPI) have partnered to host a global conference to share industry trends, offer innovative education and provide a collaborative yet exclusive environment for networking and business exchanges. The forum was a true ‘global’ event, drawing a record number of registered attendees from more than 50 countries that represented a wide variety of event disciplines. Fifty-four percent of the attendees were from Europe; 37 per cent from North America; 10 per cent from Central/South America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East; 68 per cent were members of MPI, SITE or both associations; and over 100 attendees were attending either an MPI or SITE conference for the first time.

Kevin Hinton, who announced he was leaving the organisation in late January, reflected on his final conference as SITE chief executive officer. “As past chair of MPI, I felt very proud to be part of this coming together of SITE and MPI members to share in an unforgettable experience. When we kicked off with our shared leadership dinner at Palazzo Brancaccio, the energy in the room was a sure sign of the excitement we all felt. I heard this throughout the event from delegates who were soaking up the learning and relishing their time meeting new people – leaders of our industry from around the world. “At the closing gala, we all gathered at the Villa Miani overlooking Rome to celebrate Italian food, culture, history and the last chance to be part of this important forum,” Mr Hinton said.

The education programme included more than 30 diverse sessions, with separate tracks for incentive travel and meeting management professionals as well as concurrent sessions designed for both meeting and incentive professionals. There was significant crossover with members of each group attending sessions supported by each organisation. The event also incorporated several sustainability and corporate social responsibility initiatives, including working with Food for Good and EquoEvento to donate 390 meals to Voreco Onlus, an organisation that provides support to the destitute in Rome. Acknowledging the success of the first-time event, the boards of both organisations came together to announce the Treaty of Rome of the Incentive and Meeting Industry, a joint declaration of future collaboration and cooperation signed by Kevin Hinton and SITE board president Annamaria Ruffini, and MPI president Paul Van De Venter and board chair Amanda Armstrong. The agreement commits the two organisations to continue to work together around future events, mutual education and content delivery, as well as investigation of new ways to serve members of both associations around the world. “Dario Franceschini’s presence and speech confirmed how the MICE industry is becoming more important and influential to the European economy,” Ms Ruffini added. At the beginning of the event Didier Scaillet was introduced as the new SITE chief executive officer effective 1 February. “The SITE + MPI Global Forum was a resounding success on many levels. The level of participation far exceeded our expectations with nearly 600 meeting, events and incentive travel professionals gathering in the Eternal City. The quality of the program, both education and social, was outstanding! I want to thank the teams at both SITE and MPI and, especially the Host Committee, for their

hard work and commitment to make the event an unforgettable experience,” Mr Scaillet commented. In addition to the introduction of Mr Scaillet, SITE also announced it has named specialist MICE agency SoolNua as the association’s new strategic marketing partner, with SoolNua managing partner Pádraic Gilligan taking on the role of chief marketing officer for both SITE and the SITE Foundation. SITE rotates its conference between Asia, Europe and the Americas, and announced that SITE Global Conference 2019 will be held 11-13 January in Bangkok, Thailand. MPI announced its European Meetings and Events Conference (EMEC) will be in The Hague, Netherlands in February 2019.

was instrumental in bringing the event to her city. “The success of the Global Forum was due to clear ideas and a willingness to collaborate. The event proved that alliances in the incentive and meeting industry are possible and fruitful. “The Treaty of Rome of the Incentive and Meeting Industry, signed by SITE and MPI leaders in front of 600 colleagues, is a simple but powerful beginning of our new commitment to future collaboration that will benefit the global MICE industry. Venue news

It’s official:

CTICC2 is now open CTICC 2, the Cape Town International Convention Centre’s R900 million expansion, is open for business. Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and Cape Town Executive Mayor, Patricia de Lille officially opened the centre on 25 January 2018.

T

he new facility is set to strengthen Cape Town’s reputation as a global business events destination, and marks significant progress in the CTICC’s strategy of becoming one of the top ten long-haul convention centres in the world. Construction of CTICC 2 commenced in 2014. The facility is a collaborative project by the centre and its shareholders – the City of Cape Town, Western Cape Government and SunWest International. Chief executive officer of the CTICC, Julie-May Ellingson, said the CTICC is now a fully integrated event venue complex, never before seen in Cape Town, which offers clients unparalleled choice and flexibility. Ever since the CTICC opened in 2003, expansion was on the cards as the centre’s growth exceeded expectations. High occupancy and lack of capacity prompted the company’s board to search for expansion sites. Executive Mayor Patricia de Lille said that CTICC 2 boosts Cape Town’s reputation as a globally-competitive business events destination, and will

enhance the socio-economic benefits the centre produces. Western Cape Premier Helen Zille said: “The CTICC has far outperformed original expectations, becoming a profit centre in its own right. The CTICC’s continued profitability shows that government can facilitate entrepreneurship and that public-private partnerships can flourish in South Africa.” Western Cape Minister of Economic Development Alan Winde said: “The CTICC’s important role in job creation and bringing revenue into the province cannot be underestimated. My hope is that the new, expanded convention centre will radically accelerate the creation of jobs for residents in this sector. “As part of Project Khulisa, my department has been focused on growing the tourism sector and creating more jobs. We know that business travellers tend to spend more money when they travel, which benefits suppliers, retail and our economy as a whole. “Delegates at CTICC-hosted conferences spent R1.3 billion in

2016/17, while international delegates brought R363 million in foreign exchange into our economy.” The interactive opening ceremony gave guests the opportunity to experience several of the state-of-the-art meeting spaces within the facility. “CTICC 2 adds an additional 31 148 m2 to our complex, including 10 000 m2 of conference and exhibition space, as well as a further 3 000 m2 of formal and informal meeting space. “These numbers translate to six exhibition halls, four meeting suites, five meeting pod rooms, an executive boardroom, three open-air terraces including an impressive rooftop venue, a coffee shop, and a multi-level parking garage,” Ms Ellingson said. The centre, located opposite and due east of the original convention centre, boasts an environmentally sustainable design, high-tech venue control systems, high-calibre IT infrastructure, free public Wi-Fi, three production kitchens to cater for every type of event, and a service tunnel under Heerengracht avenue connecting CTICC 2 with CTICC1. The centre will now be further integrated with CTICC 1 to ensure seamless event operations. “Phase 2 of the CTICC 2 project is well underway. In the next few months, we will be able to start construction of the skybridge linking the two buildings across Heerengracht,” Ms Ellingson confirmed. Prior to the official opening, CTICC 2 had already hosted several “event firsts” to showcase the centre’s capabilities welcoming close to 50 000 delegates. While Cape Town’s severe drought remains the key talking point in the city, Ms Ellingson explained that the CTICC has implemented several water saving measures to reduce the centre’s water consumption. www.businesseventsafrica.com

JEC 2018:

We are open for business The Johannesburg Expo Centre (JEC) is a world-class venue that offers clients, exhibitors, and visitors a unique and memorable experience, and therefore it is no surprise that some of the most iconic exhibitions, conferences and events keep returning to the JEC each year.

C

raig Newman, chief executive officer of JEC said: “Since its establishment over three decades ago, JEC has continued to transform its outstanding facilities to become one of the leading venues in the world today, and the biggest events venue in Southern Africa.” Here’s a snapshot of what to expect on our events calendar in 2018.

Rand Show 2018 One of the most anticipated events at the JEC in 2018 is the return of the Rand Show, from Friday 30 March to Sunday 8 April. With a 123-year legacy, the Rand Show remains one of South Africa’s largest and most iconic events. The Rand Show 2018 will include extended hours giving visitors the opportunity to enjoy the fun fair and food from various vendors by night as well – all in all providing a definitive consumer experience. Some of the newly launched expos include: The Sports Expo @ Rand Show, Into the Future Expo @ Rand Show, Kids Expo @ Rand Show, Showcase SA, and the Lifestyle Expo @ Rand Show. “The Rand Show continues to provide families with a value-packed outing with over 200 000 visitors in attendance annually,” Mr Newman said.

bauma CONEXPO AFRICA bauma CONEXPO AFRICA 2018 is the International Trade Fair for construction machinery, building material machines, mining machines and construction vehicles. It provides the construction and mining industry in Africa with a professional platform for networking, investment and the exchange of ideas www.businesseventsafrica.com

and information. The show, launched in 2015 at the JEC, has established itself, returning every biennial for this globallyrecognised event.

Ultra South Africa 2018 One of the most renowned Electronic Dance Music (EDM) Festivals in the world, made its debut in South Africa in 2013 with Ultra South Africa. This year the Ultra Music Festival presents Ultra SA’s fifth anniversary, when this outdoor music festival returns to the JEC on 10 February, bringing the world’s top EDM DJ’s with unparalleled stage designs and top-tier productions to more than 40 000 South African EDM fans.

Interbuild Africa 2018 Interbuild Africa returns to the exhibition halls at JEC from 15-18 August to mark its 50th anniversary, with a long and successful legacy that has earned this event the title of Africa’s largest building services and construction exhibition. Interbuild Africa, together with its worldclass co-located shows, is the definitive showcase for the full spectrum of building, construction, and related industries. These shows offer exhibitors unparalleled access to an international audience of key industry buyers and influential decisionmakers.

Electra Mining 2018 One of the most renowned Mining Trade Exhibitions in Africa will return to JEC from 10-14 September 2018, bringing together over 800 exhibitors to meet thousands of local and international visitors to see the latest innovations across mining, industrial,

electrical, power, transport, and related industries. Visitors can view machinery and equipment in action during hundreds of live demonstrations. The value-add free-toattend seminars offer an excellent learning platform, while the co-located conferences delivered great insight and knowledge to the delegates.

Other events on the calendar The JEC has a jam-packed calendar of events for 2018. The Gap Factor Shield Trade Day, the Bauma Conexpo Africa Show and Sonic State Music Festival, are just some of the events taking place during the first half of 2018. Specialised Exhibitions Montgomery will also celebrate its 50th Anniversary at JEC in February. The latter half of 2018 sees the return of numerous trade exhibitions, the Classic Car Show, the Agri Confex, and the Jehovah’s Witness International Conference. Mr Newman said: “The JEC offers a unique setting that can accommodate any client. Our strength lies in the diversity of our facilities, which enable us to host anything from an international music festival to a professional trade exhibition, car and boat shows, and upmarket events and weddings.” He added that to remain relevant, the JEC constantly reinvents itself. “Annual upgrades and renovations are critical to maintaining the high level of integrity to the venue’s infrastructure. It is all part of the commitment we’ve made to our clients and stakeholders to always provide the best possible experience. We have to ensure that we stay relevant in an environment that demands excellence in every way,” Mr Newman concluded.

SAACI news

Professionalisation of the

business events industry

By Rudi Van Der Vvyer, chief executive officer of SAACI

What does professionalisation of the business events industry truly mean? When talking about the professionalisation of the business events industry we can draw a comparison with other industries that have successfully professionalised their environments.

L

et’s use the accounting world as an example, here it refers to professional certifications which need to be obtained and kept up to date and relevant within their fields by means of Continued Development Programmes. Professionalisation is a form of selfregulation through certification, and association membership that provides security on the standards and quality of industry participants at various levels. Similarly, the professionalisation of the business events industry has the aim of providing a benchmark for standards of service and the quality thereof through appropriate certification. It is also a concept driving not only individuals within an industry but the

companies in which those individuals operate. This then organically spills over to the entire industry and lifts the operational standards of all players. There is also an educational component to this process, meaning end-user clients are educated to be aware of and conscious to demand a professional supplier, as this provides them with the assurance of a certain level and quality of service as well as proper recourse in the event of something going wrong or a substandard service. This recourse is only due to the code of conduct and ethics agreed to by professionals within the industry when taking up a certification or being part of a professional association.

By professionalising the industry, we also align with international best practices with the backing of internationallyrecognised certifications. SAACI is currently recognised by the international industry as the professional association for business events in Southern Africa, and we aim to further expand and strengthen this recognition during 2018 and onward by further collaboration with international association partners. We are also working on various projects to, within the Southern African environment, professionalise our industry and educate end user clients on the importance of choosing wisely and demanding certain criteria and standards from their suppliers within the industry.

EXSA news

Keeping ahead of the curve 2017 brought to the exhibition and events industry, an increase in themed and live streamed events with attendee interactivity and VR (Virtual Reality) as focus points.

Despite political tensions, a rise in protectionism, and a perceived fragility of free trade, both the global economy and the exhibition industry, are growing at a higher rate than expected. Growth, however, cannot be taken for granted.

The data points to digital The industry’s resilience and adaptability are facing perhaps their biggest test and

The blurring of the lines This will continue and intensify between historically separate event formats like exhibitions, congresses, and conferences.

The quest for talent and skills Organisers and venues are rethinking who they need to hire and what skills they need to add. While a significant number of talent programmes around the world now offer opportunities for future leaders to stand out, education programmes still need to be developed to provide sufficient qualified talent for everyday needs, especially on the venue side.

The challenge of security This will have to be answered against a backdrop of attacks on the public around the world. There is no “one size fits all”, no single “check list” solution for all the different types of events. Security for everyone at events will be shaped by the level of collaboration between all the parties involved, including the service providers.

Suddenly, they have access to discernment and the event becomes more personalised as a result. Summits will become festivals of choices, journeys of discovery where the experience is sensory. AAXO

AAXO triple roars into the New Year For the Association of African Exhibition Organisers (AAXO), the number “three” is important this year. 2018 has seen AAXO celebrate its third year since inception and this year has kicked-off with a triple roar.

F

irst on the agenda was the Exhibition of Exhibitions, followed by Exhibitor and Organiser training, and then the prestigious ROAR Awards ceremony. This saw the entire industry unite for a jam-packed week of triple learning and collaboration opportunities. The Exhibition of Exhibitions (EoE) kickstarted 2018 in true AAXO style, not only showcasing exhibitions that are taking place in 2018 and beyond, but it gave exhibitors an opportunity to see various types of stand building, design and creative trends that are available when planning their stand at an exhibition. New trends and technology were highlighted at the event and it was a great opportunity to network with like-minded marketing people who have already discovered the power of exhibitions as a marketing platform. Speaking of which, our first organiser and exhibitor training features second on the AAXO year planner and covered pertinent issues like improving sales as well as safety and security. The aim was to assist members with sales growth and

to ensure safe and secure exhibitions – given the global political climate and the enhanced safety threats internationally. Two world-renowned experts in the fields of sales improvement and safety and security shared their expertise with the audience, leaving our delegates with a sense of comprehensiveness as they left the practical, real-world based, learning environment. To complete this triple roar, AAXO hosted our annual ROAR Awards. The main goal of the awards was to create a platform for talented and dedicated industry professionals to be recognised and celebrated for the hard work that they put into their exhibition/organising. This was successfully achieved, judging by the volume and quality of entries received from our organisers and exhibitors. It was heartwarming to see a bigger and even better gala event this year that highlighted the level of excellence of the African exhibition industry. The award categories covered a wide range from various trade and consumer

exhibition categories, to Confex and table top categories. Social media and Africa bound were additions to this list. Judging the entries was no easy task, even for this group of experienced professionals. Apart from recognition at the gala event, winners received exposure on the AAXO website and media coverage. The general feedback was that members loved the recognition and additional credibility the awards brings, “making our hard work so much more worthwhile.” The ROAR Awards was hosted under the umbrella of the Exhibitions Industry Alliance (EIA), in conjunction with EXSA, with whom AAXO has a collaboration agreement. It was well attended and guests were impressed with our program, entertainment, the good spirt and networking opportunities. Although AAXO is still a young organisation, it has taken the African exhibition organisers industry to another level by continuously improving member’s credibility and transparency through various initiatives like these mentioned here. The last word

Why South Africa needs to drive

sustainable tourism By Jerry Mabena, chief executive officer of Thebe Tourism Group

Our tourism industry has long been considered a world leader for responsible tourism, but it’s up to the local sector to ensure the longevity of the country’s tourism assets.

I

t is commendable that, based on an assessment of the problems, constraints and opportunities facing the South African tourism industry and the imperatives of global change, the South African Tourism Department has developed a white paper for “Responsible Tourism”. It will be a key principle for the industry’s responsibility to the environment through the promotion of balanced, sustainable tourism and environmentally-friendly tourism activities. South Africa was ranked amongst the top four countries in the world in a 2015 Responsible Tourism League Table, driven by the website Responsible Travel. The table, a first of its kind, rates each tourist board globally as to its commitment

Who is Jerry Mabena? Jerry Mabena holds a B Com degree in Industrial Psychology and Economics from Rhodes University. He is the chief executive officer of Thebe Services Division, where he is responsible for the integration and growth of the Thebe Investment Corporation’s investment in the tourism, financial services and energy services industries. Before joining Thebe in 2011, he served as chief executive officer of Kagiso Property Holding. He has experience in advertising, marketing and business management. He serves as a director of Thebe Tourism Group (Pty) Limited. He also holds a diploma in project management from Damelin and a certificate programme in accounting and finance from Wits Business School.

to sustainable tourism. Each country can potentially score six points, which South Africa reached, joined by Bhutan, Sweden, and England. The table examined at least 50 countries tourism boards’ vision, policies and activities regarding responsible and sustainable tourism. The chief executive officer of Responsible Travel, Justin Francis, noted that many tourist boards’ vision statements include little or no reference to sustainability or published responsible tourism policies or activities. Mr Francis said: “In many cases around the world, we think responsibility in tourism is being achieved despite the tourism board, not because of it. South Africa is a real exception. We have national and local strategies for responsible tourism enshrined in law and policy, and has real programmes of work to deliver it.” The table, however, is based solely on tourist boards’ commitment to responsible and sustainable tourism – purely looking at what they publish online, without on-theground research. The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) declared 2017 the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development. Locally, the National Department of Tourism’s annual Tourism Month initiative has taken on the theme of sustainability with the “I Do Tourism Sustainably” campaign. The focus, according to a department release, is “on promoting eco-friendly, inclusive and socially-responsible tourism practices that promote cultural diversity and boost this sector’s contribution to the South African economy”. It’s one thing for an industry to embrace the concept of sustainable tourism, which South Africa does, but it must be implemented across each of the country’s tourist attractions, sites, tours and other services. Our tourist attractions, including the scenery, wildlife and climate, are considered assets at risk and need to be protected to aid sustaining the planet. Furthermore, to boost economic growth, it’s vital that the entire sector drives

sustainable tourism to boost job creation and the country’s economic future. But how do these two concepts – protecting the planet and growing business – go hand in hand? Statistics South Africa reported that the travel and tourism sector contributed 3.1 per cent to South Africa’s GDP in 2016, and employed at least 711 746 individuals, representing 4.5 per cent of the total workforce. In fact, tourism surpasses mining as an employer. Currently, one in 22 employed people in South Africa work in the tourism industry. The World Travel and Tourism Council has forecasted that by 2027, South Africa’s travel and tourism sector will account for 1 110 000 jobs directly, an increase of 4.1 per cent per annum over the next ten years. This means that a great deal of young people – matriculants and university graduates – will or can be absorbed by the sector through not only traditional hospitality and travel career opportunities, but also fields in technology and sciences. For South Africa, this means encouraging organisations in the industry to help previously disadvantaged establish their own businesses, sustainably. It is imperative that they include sustainable practices in their business models from the start. In addition, growing the market by developing local products in townships and villages. Likewise, it’s important that more heritage tourism routes are created. Empowering the black middle-class, or Afropolitans, to travel for leisure is an opportunity that needs to be embraced. Tapping into even a small percentage of the black market has the potential to boost revenue for the country by billions of Rands. If we could convert 10 per cent of black VFR travellers, we could generate R2 billion in revenue from the industry. From an international tourist’s perspective, more travellers are seeking out responsible tourism options that make a positive impact on the environment. We need to enforce practices that are not only good for the environment, but also good for business. www.businesseventsafrica.com
